Everyone has worked with fever to bring you this monthly magazine; it’s a task others are no longer able to provide. In the absence of two major publications, one from Cape Cod, and another from Boston, the market for highquality, cultured, lifestyle magazines has thinned, leaving our three brands for the enjoyment of a discerning readership.

These publications, leaves us with an unusual feeling; considering we began the effort nearly fifteen-years ago— in a somewhat crowded field, we have risen to a level we used to admire others for accomplishing.

Much has changed in the media; normal business models inferior, with technology rolling over the normal channels of communications like an out-of-control steamroller.

Some wonder the secret to our longevity; truth be told, you don’t publish for riches, never compromise your integrity, and you should continue to print until there’s nothing left to share with others.

It has never been easy, although it’s perceived to be; and, as difficult as it is—going to press on a twelve-month schedule, it’s hard to imagine what life would be like without our magazines and an appreciative audience.

We count our blessings and feel lucky we are one of few remaining companies left to navigate the future of print. We hold steady and accept the responsibility for as long as the public keeps faith in our cause, and allow us to continue to grow.

AN OBSESSION WITH NEGATIVITY AND SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECIES I CAN. I CAN. I CAN. These are the words people have relied upon when facing a broad spectrum of challenges. An innocent child with the ambition to open a lemonade stand, an artist who is told they lack talent or a hiker trapped beneath a boulder; facing an abominable option for freeing himself, yet ultimately surviving the ordeal. In each of these situations, the will to build, create—even preserve life—can be directly attributed to a willingness to determine their destiny.

While these extreme and differing examples highlight how important self-determination can be when facing challenges, it also begs examination as to the importance of an individual’s outlook, juxtaposed to societies convoluted views and actions on the subject.

Great minds have examined the beliefs we hold and lay a path of success and happiness.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”

On a different note, comic performer, Groucho Marx, had this to say on the subject. “Each morning, when I open my eyes, I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead; tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.” (quote credits: movemequotes.com).

The motivation and self-help business is huge; in 2008, according to INC. Magazine, the industry topped $11 billion for services and products related to helping us feel better about ourselves. Unfortunately, the article sites that it was a waste of money—because it didn’t help the 40 million people who suffer from negativity and depression.

But before we get too off track, let’s get back to what the focus of this opinion piece is to be.

The stock market has been rising to dizzying heights, albeit, it has been struggling to reach new records, yet voices from every corner of the financial world are shouting about a recession.

Such a dirty word, which sends shivers up the spine. Comments flow like rivers of worry, “not again,” “we’re not prepared,” “it’s a 12 | OCTOBER 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

dark day for this administration.” Yes, these are the battle cries of those who are: either misinformed, crave headlines and wish to be considered an experts in all things financial, or are shorting the market and will win big if they can change the minds of millions of people, and cause them to act on negative self-fulfilling prophecy—selling at market highs!

Allow an explanation. There are two important facts to consider when the conversation is about the inevitable collapse of the economy; first, it doesn’t happen while you’re talking about it, and secondly, if you can work people up and have them believe the economy is going into a dark hole—and we’ll all starve, then they’ll stop spending, change normal behavior and create the recession they fear.

With this said, let us look at a possible reason for the calamity of the markets and the rhetoric that instills horror. As we approach an election—an important one—political parties are betting on their favorite candidates, and with so much on the line, as it relates to power, control, and wealth, there is a good reason to believe negativity is behind the possible unseating of the current administration.

Why do we construe such fantasy you may ask? It’s relatively simple, the economy is running at full steam, employment has never been better, and now much of the population is invested in some financial instrument. This leaves selfish groups of people looking to dismantle success and hurt the public for personal gain.

It’s a well-known fact people vote with our wallets, and if they are full, an expected result will be realized. But, if citizens are hurting and fearful then change is on the horizon.

We’re not making an endorsement or encouraging either party; but, we are taking a view into what is going on behind the noise and the prediction of a huge meltdown of our financial markets.

We see that the power of thoughts could easily move markets when properly applied, but also ruin great achievements when used recklessly.

It’s time to step back and take hold of what we want our lives to be, how we want our investments to react, but most importantly, what we don’t want our politicians and news media to do to our futures.

emodeling your home can be one of the most exciting projects to undertake; but many homeowners still recall the pain it took to complete their renovation. Some go as far as calling their project “hell on earth.”

Whether you’re thinking about a bathroom update, kitchen overhaul, or a new addition, planning and setting realistic expectations are critical in ensuring your project goes as smoothly as possible. From multiple contractors we investigated, you should expect few callbacks regarding appointments, concerns, or timetables, and expect your instructions to be dismissed.

With this knowledge your expectations should be tampered so that you’re not completely dissatisfied with the process. Still, this is reality, and unless you go to the best in the industry, and are willing to pay a premium, you’ll end up with imitators and stress throughout the ordeal.

Here are seven steps the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) recommend before you get started: 1. Determine your goals and needs. Understand why you are undertaking the project, whether it’s for resale value or so you can enjoy your home more. If looking to increase resale value, consider the neighborhood and potential upgrades that can have the highest impact when going to market. If remodeling can make for a more comfortable space, create a list of “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves,” then evaluate what’s feasible. Being realistic about needs and wants can help you create a budget.

2. Get inspired. Whether watching home improvement shows or browsing the internet, finding photos of styles and looks you admire can be beneficial when sharing your vision with a remodeling contractor. (Special note; for a specialized project or large ones which will cause an appearance change to your structure, it is wise to also consult with an architect— builders are not designers).

3. Plan your budget and know who is doing the work.

Setting a budget and staying within it is critical to the project’s success. Be sure to build in a contingency fund for unforeseen expenses—at least 20-25%. Project expenses should factor in the cost of products, labor, and project management. There are also possible additional costs such as long-term maintenance, repairs, energy use, and a dining out budget if undergoing a full kitchen remodel or hotel costs which are sometimes necessary with large-scale projects.

To avoid any unpleasant surprises, be sure to get a written estimate, (better a “quote”), and the scope of work once you’ve selected a contractor.

4. Timing. If there is a specific event driving the project, work backward through the various project stages to determine a realistic timeline. Build in additional time as a buffer for unexpected delays and recognize remodeling contractors typically have long lead times and may require flexibility to deliver optimal results.

5. Find a contractor you trust. Home remodeling can be stressful no matter how well you plan, but a dependable partner can make the process go smoother. While some of the best references may come from neighbors, friends or family members, a trade association like NARI can help with its online “Find a Remodeler” tool. Make sure any contractor you’re considering has several years of relevant experience.

And, once you decide who you will be letting into your home, learn who will be doing the work—seldom it is the smartly dressed estimator who will be swinging a hammer.

Be sure to confirm they are insured, bonded, and employees have been CORI checked. These inquiries will help prevent pain and perhaps worse.

6. Check references. When it comes to remodeling your home, you can never be too careful when choosing who to work with.

Be sure to follow up on references, read reviews online, and even check out the work of any remodelers you’re considering hiring, if possible.

7. Prepare for the process. Don’t wait until the last minute; regardless of the size of the project, there will always be inconvenience, noise, dust, and potential delays. Your daily routine will be disrupted. Because it can be especially stressful when redoing the kitchen or essential bathrooms, you’ll need to consider a backup plan or other options throughout the project.

Remember to declutter the work area and protect or pack away any belongings that might be in the way during the renovation.

You may wish to take photos before the project is started if a point of reference is needed later.

Stockholm-based, internationally renowned meeting place for the world’s best photography, will open their New York City location on October 18, 2019.

Fotografiska’s newest global outpost will open in the Flatiron District of Manhattan, at 281 Park Avenue South. With excitement and an eclectic mix of photography, culture, dining, and entertainment, the area will thrive from what is estimated to be hundreds of thousands of guests—even a million—annually.

The first Fotografiska location opened in Stockholm, Sweden in 2010; an organization known for showcasing many of the best photographers in the world— including David LaChapelle, Annie Leibovitz, Martin Schoeller and Albert Watson—alongside an incredible roster of emerging talents such as Cooper & Gorfer, Ren Hang, and Christian Tagliavini. A versatile event venue with vaulted ceilings and skylights will host programming for the Fotografiska member community.

The Inaugural Exhibition will feature Ellen von Unwerth, Tawny Chatmon, Helene Schmitz and Adi Nes “Fotografiska For Life” and will debut an exhibition in partnership with TIME, featuring Anastasia Taylor-Lind.

Renowned German photographer and Fotografiska alum, Ellen von Unwerth, will exhibit Devotion! 30 Years of Photographing Women. A collection previously shown at Fotografiska Stockholm and fantastically augmented for its NYC premiere, will run October 18-January 26, 2019.

Devotion! explores her provocative, yet playful photography through the lens of seven emotional expressions: Play, Gender, Drama, Love, Power, Passion, and Lust. Each image reflects the lively, energetic, and sensual style—with a slightly humorous touch—characteristic of von Unwerth. For the artist, it’s never about objectifying, rather, playing with archetypes and stereotypes, high and low, stirring emotions and creating commotion.

RAMMY®-nominated Boston Baroque has announced the start of its 2019-2020 season—led by founding music director and conductor Martin Pearlman.

Showcasing some of the most beloved music of the repertoire performed by a roster of renowned soloists and the ensemble’s celebrated orchestra and chorus, this year’s musical season will include its annual Messiah and New Year’s Eve performances, along with Vivaldi’s, The Four Seasons, featuring concertmaster Christina Day Martinson.

The season opens on Friday, October 25 and Sunday, October 27, with a program that brings together the music of the operatic and symphonic stages.

Martin Pearlman will lead the Boston Baroque orchestra in performances of Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony No. 36 in C, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 102 in B flat, with soprano Amanda Forsythe joining the ensemble for a selection of dazzling arias from Il Re Pastore, Zaide, and Haydn’s oft-overlooked oratorio Il Ritorno di Tobia among others.

Then Boston Baroque rings in the holiday season with two December programs that have become holiday traditions; Handel’s Messiah and the New Year’s Eve Celebration Concert.

This year’s Messiah, which will take place on December 6 and 7 at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, will feature an all-star cast of soloists including Amanda Forsythe, soprano; Ann McMahon Quintero, mezzo-soprano; Thomas Cooley, tenor; and Andrew Garland, baritone.

The New Year’s Eve Celebration program includes a pair of Baroque gems by Bach—his Concerto in D for Three Violins and Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D—as well as an orchestral suite by Rameau, Corelli’s Concerto Grosso No. 6., and Vivaldi’s glittering motet, Nulla in Mundo pax sincera with soprano Maggie Finnegan.

As winter winds down and spring is in the air, Boston Baroque returns to two of Vivaldi’s masterworks for its spring concerts on March 27 and 29 with The Four Seasons—Vivaldi’s quartet of concerti Grossi, each elucidating on the nature of the seasons— will feature GRAMMY®-nominated concertmaster Christina Day Martinson. Newport’s Contemporary Ballet Company Plans Two Events in October

he famed Island Moving Company (IMC), Newport’s Contemporary Ballet has announced performance dates for two new productions at the recently restored Newport Congregational Church. The Nature of Light and Alice in Wonderland will be performed October 17-20.

The Nature of Light will feature new work

by IMC’s Artistic Director, Miki Ohlsen, and choreography by the iconic José Limon, Colin Connor and Associate Artistic Director, Danielle Genest. The show’s title is inspired by the reflective light-play from the historic church venue’s notable La Farge stained glass windows. The 90-minute performance will be accompanied by live music provided by an ensemble of musicians from across Southern New England under the direction of Adrienne Taylor.

W

hile it may not seem important to those south of the MA/ NH border, those with a second or third home in the Granite State—or who are long-time residents in the north country, are breathing a sigh of relief that the controversial Northern Pass, transmission line project appeal, was denied on July 19, 2019.

For those unfamiliar, Northern Pass was going to be a massive energy project which in its original form, was to transport electrical power from Canada, (Quebec) to the US, (Deerfield) and travel over 190+ miles of mountains, rivers, and forests. Ignoring the fact that these beautiful attributes of 52 | OCTOBER 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

New Hampshire are responsible for a continuous flow of tourists and income going into the state's budget, the fight had been going on since 2011 when the project was first announced.

With a price tag of over $1.5 billion, the battle between Eversource and grass-roots citizens groups raged for years. The impact on property values, the degradation of the State’s glorious views, damage to the wilderness and possible harmful financial damage to a thriving tourist industry seemed to outweigh the benefits of temporary employment during construction.

There were discussions regarding different routes, even burying the power lines, with Eversource spending over $40 million on land purchases, according to a report by New Hampshire Public Radio,

still, Eversource refused to consider the option, stating that going underground would be cost-prohibitive.

Rangling continued with proposals and counter-proposals tossed into each camp through February of 2018 when the New Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee denied Eversource a permit. Their action was appealed and sent to the state Supreme Court for review.

Finally, a few months ago, the Court— in a unanimous ruling—denied the project from moving forward, making it the end of the road for the company, (a giant), due to the public, (little people), outcry.

Still, with investments hanging in limbo, and with energy needs increasing yearly, all the citizen’s groups can do is wait and see what Eversource’s next step will be. H

Rest in Peace t’s a solemn day when an icon passes on without an inkling of notice; we speak of the minivan.

At one time, the half-car, half-passenger van was the symbol of motherhood, the suburbs, and family; only to be relegated to extinction. Many wore the emblem of “Soccer Mom” with pride, and as for carmakers, it was a cash cow for years. But, as all things must come to an end, is it a surprise that the un-hip, boxy, unflattering utilitarian vehicle is facing its demise? Let’s face it, how cool can anyone look driving a minivan?

In an age where appearances forgo any internal peace, satisfaction or comfort, and when both parents and their kids are rushing off to goat-yoga classes, cleansings appointments, in between taking a copious amount of unusable selfies, the

vehicles of choice have evolved to SUVs and Crossovers.

American car companies are paying attention to the public’s interest in style, comfort, and prestige; given these signals, now might be the perfect time to buy into nostalgia and get a deal on a vintage people-carriers. H

No Respect or Fear of Consequences

I

t’s a tragedy when a society begins to crumble—and unfortunately, ours is showing significant signs of weakness.

Put aside the glorification of crime, drugs, and gang-affiliations, which has crept into sports, television, and movies.

Ignore the sexualization of youth on all fronts. And pretend the morbid reports of political strife between Democrats and Republicans, as well as the blatant

partisanship of the media who attempt to influence elections, doesn’t exist.

If these observations don’t align with your views, then please file this story under “insignificant.”

In August, Channel 4 in New York City reported and ran a tape, (https://www. nbcnewyork.com/on-air/as-seen-on/TeensRob-Woman-and-Beat-Her-With-HerOwn-Cane_New-York-558745292.html), of three teenagers violently attacking and robbing a 67-year-old woman in Queens for the unprecedented act of making eyecontact with them.

According to the report, “The violent, yet seemingly random attack, happened on August 4 in Jamaica (a middle-class neighborhood in the borough of Queens), and included the group hurling insults, profanities and even laughing at the

woman—all after the group and the woman locked eyes, law enforcement sources say.” Besides this, the story went on to claim the group tried to steal the cane and her cellphone, only to revert to beating her with her cane.

The two females and one male, apparently jumped the senior citizen—but the news station reports that she is okay, and doesn’t fear them. The victim told a reporter, “I’m not afraid of them. I don’t want people to be afraid of these kinds of people. I want them to step up because otherwise, it won’t stop.”

When questioned by Channel 4, neighbors reported they have witnessed an increase in crime conducted by younger individuals.

This cowardly trio is still on the run. H

e’re a bit late to the party, and by now you’ve likely learned that the British television series, Downton Abbey is now a movie.

the cap to creator Julian Fellowes who is responsible for the success of the sixseason show, and the interactive tour of props, displays, and narrations, that has made its way to NYC, Florida (as odd as it seems), and now open in Boston.

Amazing, is the influence the series continues to have on the American public.

Downton Abbey—the movie—was set in 1927, (how time flies), and this time around the resident family of Highclere Castle is preparing for a visit by, none

other than, King George V and Queen Mary. Of course, this theme will reign, (no pun intended), throughout the film, causing conflict, chaos and quite possibly a happy ending.

Spectators will be served a healthy portion of their favorite characters, albeit their appearances are said to be brief and out of sync at times; still, fans of the series will be taken back to a time of grace, class, and respect—much of what has been lost during the last few decades. H

A Millennial Tragedy

He is entitled to equal justice, and we hope the public and his opponents don’t lose sight of this fact. Next, we offered to interview the Millennial Mayor over a year ago—we wanted to allow him an opportunity to tell the public his view of the events that lead up to an indictment. Our offer remains, but would include questions about the more recent issues he faces.

WE HAVE TO ASK; WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Does your counsel understand your trial will be predicated on public opinion? Have you enlisted a first-rate damage control PR firm? Are you considering the pain you are putting your family through?

We understand that those under 30-years-old believe they are invincible, and the truth will set them free; however, in this case, it’s doubtful. Except for a hand-full of soldiers who support you and your candidacy, it seems from most reports; you’re not a favorite.

SPILL OVER Recently, a radio-talk host, who we admire for his opinion show, made mention of his dislike of how New Bedford and Fall River has been neatly rolled up into the branding campaign of the region now known as the SouthCoast. He claims that it doesn’t do justice for the two cities that make up the area. Our humble response; “What?”

Our publications—particularly, the one known as SOCO, (an abbreviation of SouthCoast), was not mentioned in the article; but, since we enjoy the benefits of involvement, we feel it necessary to voice our view of the implications.

For decades Fall River and New Bedford have suffered from bad press and an image of poverty, crime, and much worse. Their identities have been reduced down to two words; “Fish and heroin,” as described by a transplant from New York, during an interview about her art—which we published, absent of her opinion of the two cities.

We disagree with the statement by the talk show host about the origin and concept of the SouthCoast, “…born from a marketing strategy for a miserably failing newspaper and a hospital chain.” In both cases—like them or not— each offers the communities they serve important and vital services, for, without them, even a hugely successful brand such as the SouthCoast could not save the two struggling

cities from complete debilitation. We might add, that WBSM and other radio stations broadcasting to each metro area plays important roles in keeping residents informed and the region relevant, far from the imaginary wall that surrounds them.

SOCO Magazine is read worldwide, and we have the data to prove it; we are very proud of how the magazine and our other two titles, New England Monthly and 401 Ocean State, have been catalysts in establishing recognition and growth of the villages, towns, and cities that draw from all parts of the country.

Some may disagree with our views, but that is okay with us. What’s not right is the infighting and efforts to separate municipalities and towns when trouble brews. It’s terrible when some would attempt to isolate their communities and push off a city because negativity begins to spill into the affluent farm and coastal communities.

As for the claim “…catchy, gimmicky titles and don’t get rid of the region true identity,” hell—as we see it, this is exactly what everyone has been attempting to do. All boats rise and fall with the tide, and at this time, it should be all hands on deck so we might work together and not let others identify the SouthCoast.

BACK TO THE MAYOR You’re young, smart, and have a great deal to offer down the road; however, at this juncture, you may wish to consider your immediate options. Regardless of the outcome, you’ll be forgiven, but consider cutting your losses before it gets worse; you’ll be praised for taking away the pain you’ve caused.

VETERANS OF DOMESTIC WARS

hen talking to a partner who has been in a twenty or thirty-year relationship, the tale they tell often sounds more like a battle than a love story. The truth is that while romantic relationships are intended to be about adoration, many end up being about war.

A widely held reality is that fighting is a normal part of a relationship, while in many harmonious partnerings, peace is only attained by holding back feelings and words which may cause arguments. Often, hidden away, the relationship struggles within each partner.

Love is the goal; but the journey is too often about fighting hate, resulting in making romantic partners veterans of domestic wars.

The paradoxical truth is that everything seems to turn into its opposite. Examples are; teachers who value education, but spend time with the uneducated; police officers who enforce law and order, are surrounded by criminals; and doctors who promote health, but associate with the sick. Similarly, lovers end up dealing with hate; hate for disliked aspects of themselves; hate for specific partner characteristics; and hate for limitations which block infinite love, freedom, and satisfaction.

We prefer our romantic relationships to be more like a beautiful dance than a battle. Many couples don’t find freedom from relentless outward or inner struggles to make their relationship more loving.

The way a partner “drives us crazy” is evidence of the struggle. Partner’s differences commonly mark the flashpoint of combat. In a moment of opposition— when each partner feels right and is of firm conviction—a control battle ensues, and competition over a loving connection breaks. When partners compete for power, it becomes a war in which one partner wins but the relationship always loses.

Craving to love and be loved is common and normal; but love possesses a dimension that is rarely acknowledged—love also destroys. It’s valued for its nourishing quality, but love forces changes, and transformations which destroys human bonding. As when hot water is poured on an ice cube, the cube melts from its rigid form. The water that had been trapped in the ice becomes merged with the newly introduced liquid. The ice becomes fluid and flexible, yet in the process, the ice cube is destroyed. Love is similar, in that, it acts slowly and with relentless patience.

Ice cubes don’t resist transformation the way people do. The resistance is part of the lover’s war with hate. Love wishes to destroy us too. Through the

transformation to make us soft, flexible, and pure in love, it often appears to act as an enemy.

Each one of us possesses a few natural qualities out of an almost infinite variety.

But when these attributes we hold individually don’t match our preferences, or they interfere with living the life we wish for, we develop hate for those qualities, and we end up hating ourselves for it.

Any state other than love for ourselves will fuel a conflict within; ultimately, these battles become outward with a romantic partner. To influence a partner, and deal with his or her resistance to change, sometimes a fight is required to impress upon them how important it is that he or she get beyond their limitations.

Outward acceptance and surrender to what life delivers are part of the practice that leads to discontinuing a war-like stance. Inwardly diving ever deeper into your center-most place, from where your love springs, makes possible the disengagement.

DO WE CONTROL OUR DESTINY? Where philosophy, science and spirituality meet

“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.” hese are the words of French psychologist Émile Coué, considered the father of the modern-day positive affirmation movement. Coué’s students would repeat this expression as much as 20 times a day to help steer their thinking in a positive direction. Published in 1920 in England and the US in 1922, his book Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion incorporated this philosophy which became known as La méthode Coué, or The Coué method.1 Unlike the common belief that we must have a strong conscious will to succeed, Coué said the unconscious mind needed changing to help us get on the right path.

He never claimed to heal anyone; rather, people learned to heal themselves through deliberate, repeated suggestion.

MIND OVER MATTER

Though he never could scientifically prove his claim, his method formed the basis of what later became known as the placebo effect.

A pharmacist by training, Coué would speak highly of each medication and send along a positive message to reassure patients. He quickly noticed that repeated self-suggestion (“Every day…”), done during a relaxed state to avoid one’s willpower, could affect and even intensify the medication by penetrating the unconscious.

Coué believed the unconscious mind controlled all of our being: thoughts, actions, and biological functions. His method was based 60 | OCTOBER 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

on the theory a person can manifest any idea that exclusively occupies the mind—within reason. For example, while one cannot regenerate a lost finger, the body can be encouraged to heal if a person thinks they’re improving rather than focusing on the illness.

Science has proven that a placebo can be just as effective as a real treatment under the proper circumstances.

Explains Professor Ted Kaptchuk of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, “The placebo effect is more than positive thinking—believing a treatment or procedure will work. It’s about creating a stronger connection between the brain and body and how they work together. While placebos won’t lower your cholesterol or shrink a tumor,” they are effective for treating pain, stress-related insomnia, and cancer-related side effects.”2 Though still unclear, Kaptchuk says the placebo effect seems to be a way the brain informs the body of what it needs to feel better.

Together with the “white coat” effect of the clinical environment, a complex mind-body reaction seems to be at work involving, for example, a rise in neurotransmitters (“feel good” chemicals) such as dopamine, to greater activity in certain brain regions linked to moods, emotions and self-awareness.2 Visualization, occurring in the occipital (rear) lobe of the brain, is another common technique used to help manifest the desired reality.

By vividly and repeatedly imagining one’s dream, particularly with added emotion (as from listening to music), neural connections are formed that enhance one’s motivation and chances of fulfilling it.

A part of self-realization, “creative visualization” stems from the 1978 book of the same name by personal development author Shakti Gawain, and was recently re-popularized by Rhonda Byrne’s book The Secret.3 Byrne’s book, based on the belief that visual imagery, is made up of energy which permeates all people and things and brings “order” to the universe, and that this energy behaves in a like-attracts-like manner. In the “law of attraction,” negative energy used in thinking negative thoughts manifests a negative result in the physical.3 There is no proof that forming a mental image creates physical matter and events—that our thoughts create our reality. But proponents point to top physicists like Nobel Prize-winning Max Planck, a pioneer of quantum mechanics, who believed matter was derived from consciousness.

THE ROLE OF GENETICS

While it is possible to exert a placebo effect over our health and visualize goals to help us perform better and improve our lives, research also suggests that genes play a part in our eventual societal status.

In the journal Psychological Science, for example, a team led

by Duke University School of Medicine professor Daniel Belsky

cross-referenced genetic and socioeconomic data from a roughly 40-year study of 918 people from Dunedin, New Zealand, from early childhood through midlife, and found a striking relationship between certain genes and life success. Researchers found that genetics determined economic outcome despite education; genes and environment were linked (children with these genetic traits were born into better-off homes); genes predicted adult outcomes despite social class, where children with these traits were more upwardly mobile; these traits predicted life behaviors, from early reading and speech skills to retirement planning; and that these genetic traits were affected by intellect, self-control, and interpersonal skills.4 In an interview with Harvard Business Review, Belsky said: “Though DNA isn’t destiny, it does have something to say about the kind of people we become and what we achieve. We found that those who carried certain genetic variants—ones that had already been linked to educational attainment in other studies—hit developmental benchmarks earlier as children and held higher aspirations as teenagers. Then, as adults, they attained more education, held more prestigious jobs, earned higher incomes, partnered with betteroff mates, were more socially and geographically mobile, managed their money more effectively, and accumulated more assets. All of that does suggest our genes can affect our future. But we also know that human development stems from a complex interaction of the genes we inherit and the environments we encounter. Nature and nurture combine to make us who we are. We’re just beginning to understand how that interplay operates.”5

Norman Vincent Peale (author of The Power of Positive Thinking) and Robert H. Shuller.1 Peale believed that positive thinking is synonymous with faith.

Schuller, his student, called it “possibility thinking.”6 Their beliefs aligned with today’s positive confession Word of Faith movement or having faith in one’s faith versus a genuine trust in God/Christ.

In fact, there are Bible passages that suggest self-affirmation, visualization and the concept of universal energy.
