FROM ROLLING SOLO TO LOCALLY BACKED

Local Business Bankers with personalised insights and on-the-ground support

From the editor

Every man and his dog appear to have an opinion on Adam O’Brien and the future of the Newcastle Knights.

However, I believe his departure is a blow for the club. Did the NRL side win a premiership? No.

But, in his time at the organisation, O’Brien put some steel back into the squad after a decade of mediocre results.

Let’s be honest, he achieved that with a moderately-talented outfit.

The fact that Newcastle reached the play-offs in four of his six seasons in charge is a great achievement.

As a long-suffering Wests Tigers supporter, I’d love that record.

When O’Brien landed in the Hunter from the South Coast, he knew it would be a tough gig, with high expectations from the rugby league mad community. However, he worked his butt off and, to his credit, his troops seemed to play for him week-in week-out, despite key injuries to the likes of Kalyn Ponga, Bradman Best, Jayden Brailey and Fletcher Sharpe over lengthy periods.

Sure, he made a few mistakes, but to err is human.

Thanks for your contribution, Adam.

Mackenzie’s mother determined to change domestic violence laws

The mother of Mackenzie Anderson is taking matters into her own hands, launching a petition to harshen domestic violence (DV) sentences.

In horrific circumstances, the 21-year-old was stabbed a total of 78 times in three minutes by her former partner Tyrone Thompson at her Mayfield unit in March 2022.

The violent attack occurred in front of Mackenzie’s 23-month-old child.

Thompson, 25, had been released on parole 16 days earlier for previously assaulting the Newcastle woman and destroying her property.

Initially punished with a maximum sentence of 22-and-a-half years behind bars, his jail time was incredibly reduced by 10% after he pleaded guilty before the May 2025 trial.

Now, he’s been ordered to serve a nonparole period of 15-and-a-half years.

Vitiligo Clinical Study

Mackenzie’s distraught mum, Tabitha Acret, was appalled at the new sentencing and has lodged a formal complaint with the Human Rights Commission against NSW Justice, as well as a petition to instigate large-scale legislative reform surrounding domestic violence charges.

“When our family appealed this sentence, it was dismissed on the grounds that this is ‘normal sentencing’ for DV murders in Australia,” she said.

“Too often, there isn’t an appropriate sentencing for men who murder women.”

Ms Acret flagged Thompson also breached an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) Mackenzie had filed, by breaking into her home twice on the same day.

“He received zero sentencing for those breaches, despite it being confirmed in court,” she said.

“Families like mine are left devastated

while offenders receive lenient sentences that do not reflect the gravity of their crimes.”

The petition has already amassed more than 30,000 signatures.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease, causing loss of skin colour in patches.

Novatrials is seeking volunteers with vitiligo to join a clinical trial of a potential new treatment.

If you are over 18 years of age, either male or female and:

• have active or stable non-segmental vitiligo affecting 4-50% of the body,

• can attend appointments at our Charlestown clinic over the study period of approximately 6mths, you may be eligible to join this trial, subject to meeting other criteria.

Participants receive trial-related medical care and medication at no cost from a dedicated, caring team of health professionals. Participants also receive a reimbursement to cover the cost of travel and time for attending visits.

To discuss the trial further with our study nurse please call Paula on 02 4089 3745 or email admin@novatrials.com.au

Ivor hangs up the boots as Davies Shoes bids customers farewell

After nearly a century of dedicated service, a Newcastle retail institution will sadly bid its customers farewell for the last time.

Mayfield’s iconic Davies Shoes is closing its doors soon, just two years shy of 100.

Established by Emlyn Davies in Kurri Kurri in September 1927, the business also opened in Maitland Road, its current location, in 1939.

Following the founder’s death in 1946, his wife Edna carried on with the help of their son Trevor.

The family’s younger sibling, Ivor, having worked in the store as a schoolboy, then began permanent employment with Davies Shoes in 1964, taking full control in 1978.

But, like all good things, that legacy will now end.

“While the decision was not made lightly, I feel the time is right for me to retire,” Mr Davies said.

“We’d like to extend our heartfelt

gratitude to all who have supported the store through the decades.”

Mr Davies admitted he was chuffed to be recognised for his commitment to quality footwear, expert fitting and personalised service.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved with the business as it reflects my passion for beautiful, well-fitted shoes,” he said.

“Plus, we’ve been rewarded with amazing loyalty from our customers and staff.

“Our senior shop assistant, Linda Finney, has spent more than 25 years with us.

“We’re so grateful to her for her commitment and dedication.”

Mr Davies explained the store was probably best-known for its school shoe business, with countless children returning annually.

“We have customers who are the fourth generation of their family to be fitted with school shoes by us,” he said.

“It’s been a real family affair.

“It is going to be very difficult to say goodbye to the shop, and my incredible customers, many of whom have become friends.

“While it’s sad to see it close, I want people to celebrate that we have been in business for 98 years, which is a remarkable milestone.” •

“My wife Pam and daughters, Sally and Holly, worked at the shop for many a Back to School period.

Who packed the passports? TRAVEL TIPS

WWITH MATT & BRETT

e recently had to renew our passports, how quickly 10 years goes by. There’s something special about receiving a new passport. The empty pages full of possibilities, the photo that you know won’t have to change for 10 years, and that renewed desire to get out and travel.

It did make us think though, does everyone treat their passports the same way we do?

We think that every family (or travel group for that matter) has a PPP. That’s a Primary Passport Person. In our family, its 100% Matt. Your PPP is usually the person who is most anxious about other people’s lack of concern for the most important document you hold when travelling.

I take the role of PPP very seriously. I must know where both our passports are at any time. I check and double check before we leave home, the taxi, the plane, the hotel… you get the picture! I also require random visual checks which means no matter where we are, I must be able to see Brett has his passport (at the same time I’m checking my own).

Here’s a few tips about passports we’ve learned over the years that we thought might be helpful.

Be a creature of habit. That means always keep your passport in the same place. That’s the same place at home as well as the same place when you travel.

If you want to use the hotel safe for your passport, then put something else in there that you can’t leave without. We have (more than once) travelled with people who have realised too late that their passport is in the safe of the hotel two cities ago.

It’s best to keep your valuables close. For us, this means that we don’t really go anywhere overseas, except for maybe the beach, without our passports with us. This also helps as in some countries foreigners must carry their passport by law.

Finally, this should go without saying but we're saying it! Your passport is not waterproof. Leaky water bottles, heavy rain on your backpack or spilled wine can all wreck your passport. A simple sandwich bag can save a soggy situation. •

Designing footpaths for every step of the journey

When Richard Clarke walks around Newcastle, he doesn’t just see footpaths. He sees connections.

“Footpaths are about more than just getting from A to B. They connect people to their community, work and social life,” he said.

Richard has been with City of Newcastle for 11 years and, as a Senior Transport Planner, he now plays a key role in shaping the city’s future cycleways and footpaths. Together with his team, he helps decide where new paths are needed most and how they should be built so that people of all ages and abilities can use them.

With more than 1,000 kilometres of footpaths already across Newcastle, it’s a big job. But, Richard says it’s the detail that makes all the difference.

“Accessibility isn’t an afterthought. It’s the core of how we design. Whether it’s a parent with a pram, a child scooting to school or

someone using a wheelchair, footpaths should feel safe and easy for everyone to use,” he said.

That means looking closely at things most of us might take for granted. Kerb ramps that line up properly. Smooth, even surfaces. Safe crossing points. Shade and lighting along the way.

Richard started out his career as a surveyor before working on major road and motorway projects. These days, he gets the most satisfaction from working on innovative design solutions.

“The most interesting days are when I get to plan for the future and find solutions that make our neighbourhoods more connected,” he said.

For Richard, nothing beats walking past a spot where a new footpath has gone in and seeing people using it.

“Knowing I’ve contributed to a better outcome for our community, that’s the best

part of my role,” he said.

When it comes to delivering accessible paths for everyone, we’ve got this. •

Country music’s biggest names set to hit the right note again in Tamworth

The Toyota 54th Tamworth Country Music Festival will return in January 2026, marking more than five decades of showcasing Australian artists.

Running from 16 to 25 January, the event will once again transform the regional city into a beating heart of talent, with more than 700 acts set to perform.

Offering a mix of free and ticketed shows, it celebrates both emerging artists and established stars.

Troy Casar-Daley, Lee Kernaghan, John Williamson, Amber Lawrence, Travis Collins, Felicity Urquhart, Brooke McClymont & Adam Eckersley, Max Jackson and The Wolfe Brothers are among some of the icons set to grace the stage at the festival.

Signature events include the Toyota Golden Guitar Awards, the return of Orchestral Country with a 38-piece ensemble, and a new spin with RocKwiz Salutes Country hosted by Julia Zemiro.

Also making a surprising reappearance will be Australian children’s group, The Wiggles.

Coming off the release of their first country album, the group will be wrapping up their upcoming tour at the festival featuring the wildly popular character The Tree of Wisdom, who has taken over the internet with his signature “dance like no-ones watching” routines.

“Tamworth is an accessible festival for all people, so having a really strong family element is an important thing,” said festival executive producer Peter Ross.

Building on its long legacy, this festival will highlight Tamworth as the ‘Home of Country Music’, a place where Australian artists have been discovered, nurtured and celebrated for more than 54 years.

“The thing with the festival is we don’t rely on international names, we rely on the Australian artists to keep the festival going,” said Mr Ross.

“Tamworth is recognised as the Country Music Capital... and continues to support

Australian country music.”

Other iconic acts include Kasey Chambers, Catherine Britt, Kristy Cox, and the all-female show Her Sound, Her Story featuring Taylor Moss, Tori Forsyth, Hayley Jensen, and Tyla Rodrigues. •

Painting a new picture for women in trades

In a world where the trades are often seen as a man’s domain, Abbey Bridge is proving that women not only belong but can thrive.

Abbey is the proud owner and director of Luxe Painting Services, a female-led painting business that is turning heads across Newcastle.

What started as Abbey simply wanting to work for herself has grown into something much bigger.

“I just got sick of working for other people and wanted to give it a go,” she says.

That leap of faith has grown into a soughtafter painting team that offers something unique, a professional crew of women who bring skill, care, and attention to every project.

With demand growing, Abbey decided to take on an apprentice with no experience, to give her a chance.

That apprentice is still with Luxe Painting Services today, and the team has continued to grow with more women joining along the way.

Clients love the all-female crew, often describing them as a “breath of fresh air.”

From private residential jobs to new builds and renovations, Luxe Painting Services is known for its clean finish and even cleaner work ethic.

Clients often remark on the trust and comfort they feel with Abbey’s team in their homes.

“A lot of people say they feel safer having us around, and they love how tidy and respectful we are,” Abbey says.

“We even have a rule, nothing gets left on a client’s bench.”

Abbey knows first-hand the challenges women face in trades, from sexism to being underestimated on job sites.

That experience fuels her commitment to creating a safe and supportive workplace for her team.

“I just want Luxe Painting Services to be a healthy, happy environment where women feel encouraged and confident,” she says.

Her advice for women considering a trade? “Just go for it. Once you learn the skills, you’ll see women can do this work just as well as men — if not better.”

Newcastle Weekly celebrates 3rd birthday

Three years on… and the Newcastle Weekly shows no signs of slowing down.

Ever since proud Novocastrian Nicole Somerville turned the publication into a 100% locallyowned, operated and produced periodical, it’s continued to flourish.

So, celebrating our third birthday is a big deal for the hard-working team.

Over the past 12 months alone, we’ve featured the likes of MasterChef Australia alumni Reece Hignell and Steph de Sousa, the remarkable Kirralee Hughes, NBN presenter Jane Goldsmith, the 30th anniversary of Silverchair’s seminal album Frogstomp, and a collection of inspirational local women.

And, let’s not forget our sporting stars from the Newcastle Jets and Knights, including the ever-popular Old Boys, and Paralympian Lauren Parker, who’ve graced the front page, too.

While the magazine itself remains as popular as ever, the growth of NW’s online and social media presence knows no bounds either.

“I’m really proud of the fact that more and more people are relying on us for their source of news, property, lifestyle, entertainment, sport and community stories,” Nicole said.

“They are coming from across the region, LGAs such as Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, Maitland, Port Stephens and Singleton, and further afield.

“Signing on as a Google Showcase publisher helps as well. We’re only the second [media outlet] in the Hunter to make the cut.

“That defines us as a ‘news product’ and partners the Newcastle Weekly with some of the most respected regional and national publications.

“So, we’re not just a monthly magazine.

“The Newcastle Weekly posts 8-to-12 articles to our website… on a daily basis. Best of all, it’s free and without a paywall.

“So, I’d like to thank our loyal and avid readers, as well as those who’ve featured on the cover, for our success over the past few years. We wouldn’t be here without them.”

De Sousa

STEPH DE SOUSA

How could we ignore the rise and rise of the popular cooking goddess Steph de Sousa?

The colourful Lake Macquarie resident was a hit on MasterChef Australia in 2019, a move that’s paid dividends ever since. The selfconfessed “Frugal Foodie” also appeared as one of the headline attractions for the Living Smart Festival in her own backyard in 2024. Bright and bubbly, the mother-of-four possesses all the right ingredients for success.

SILVER CHAIR

A Newcastle institution, even in 2025, it would be remiss of the Newcastle Weekly to pass up the 30th anniversary of Silverchair’s seminal debut offering, Frogstomp. In fact, it’s hard to believe it has been three decades since three 15-year-old Newcastle High School students – Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou – stormed onto the world stage. But, the release of the smash hit single Tomorrow and accompanying album changed lives.

KNIGHTS OLD BOYS

JANE GOLDSMITH

What do you get when you put Newcastle rugby league legends Danny Buderus, Matt Gidley, Mark Hughes, Stephen Crowe and Kurt Gidley in front of a camera? A terrific front page. The quintet and members of the much-loved Once a Knight Old Boys are more than local sporting greats. They’re also out in the community all-year around, raising money for plenty of Hunter-based charities, including the Mark Hughes Foundation.

NEWCASTLE JETS

As a media partner of the Newcastle Jets, the Newcastle Weekly is always happy to throw its support behind our local footballing stars, young and not-so-young. On this occasion, the recently-retired Jason Hoffman took centre stage with a couple of talented up-and-comers Ben van Dorssen and Emma Dundas, who’s since gone on to be a vital cog in the club’s A-League Women’s squad. Expect a big 2025/26 for the Jets.

For more than two decades, Jane Goldsmith’s been a familiar face in the Hunter, delivering the news with professionalism, warmth and a deep connection to the community she serves. As a journalist and weekend presenter for NBN, she’s no stranger to telling important stories. But, in April, Jane stepped out of her comfort zone and lent her voice to a worthy cause, Melodies for Melanoma, to support the Hunter Melanoma Foundation.

MYF WARHURST

The delightful Myf Warhurst is as likeable off-screen as she is on it. Funny, selfdeprecating and very generous with her time, the Spicks and Specks star jumped at the opportunity to appear on the cover of our February edition, which coincided with her appearance as The Narrator alongside 80’s heartthrob Jason Donovan in The Rocky Horror Show. For good measure, the musical enjoyed a record-breaking season at the Civic Theatre.

From MasterChef to Living Smarter

Hunter Oasis 4 star motel & villas are set on tranquil gardens and a rural backdrop also a short walk to the village of Morpeth, renowned for its cafes, boutiques & curiosities.

Now offering local winery & brewery tours showcasing the hidden gems of Maitland and the Hunter. Add a tour to your stay, or if you're a local, we offer a pick up from Maitland train station for a great day out!

Who is your inspiration or role model? For me, it’s never been one person. It’s anyone bold enough to break the mould, to carve their own path. From artists to winemakers, from fearless women to disruptive thinkers, I draw inspiration from those who dare.

What motivates you and makes you excited? Easy: creativity and connection. Wine is a medium for both. It’s the thrill of creating something beautiful from the land, then seeing it spark joy and conversation at a table.

What advice would you give an 18-year-old about wine? Start with curiosity. Don’t chase price tags, chase flavours. Experiment with pairings, but never let rules hold you back. Wine should be an adventure, not a textbook.

If money were no object, what would you do? The same thing I’m doing now—only louder, bolder on a grander stage. Passion, not money, drives me.

If life stopped today, what would you regret? Not travelling enough. Not laughing enough. Not opening that special bottle because I was saving it. Wine is for living, not hoarding.

What’s the most expensive wine you’ve tried? Expensive doesn’t always mean memorable. The best wines are those that hit you in the soul, not just the wallet.

So, how would you answer those questions? Go on! Have another sip (or glass) and give it a go. Because at the end of the day, wine isn’t just about what’s in the glass - it’s about daring to live boldly, unapologetically and with a little bit of rock ’n’ roll.

Newcastle apartment offers effortless inner-city living

603/23 RAVENSHAW STREET, NEWCASTLE WEST

To live in the heart of Newcastle is to live among its rhythm, sea breezes drifting through the streets, the hum of cafes, and the glitter of the coastline stretching out to meet the horizon.

Perched within the prestigious Spire complex, the sixth-floor residence offers a life where convenience and luxury intertwine.

This three-bedroom apartment is a haven for those seeking ease, whether stepping into the market or downsizing without compromise.

Sunlight floods through walls of glass each morning, spilling warmth across every corner and framing a sweeping panorama of the coastline.

At its centre, an expansive open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area creates a natural gathering place.

It’s a space which flows seamlessly out to the terrace, where life can be celebrated or simply savoured.

The balcony beautifully shifts with the hours of the day; a quiet retreat at dawn, a sun-drenched setting for long lunches, or a stage for glittering city lights by night.

Or, if you’re after another layer of serenity, find comfort in the property’s retreat-like second living space.

The versatile area can be styled as a lounge, a quiet reading nook, a home office, or a serene retreat to unwind.

Recently refreshed with new paint, carpeting, and window dressings, the home carries a fresh elegance throughout.

The kitchen reflects the beauty of practical design, with stone benchtops, quality appliances, and ample storage to ensure its sleek lines remain uncluttered.

Each bedroom has been designed as a retreat in its own right, framed by glass which brings the outside in, softening the interiors with natural light.

The master suite, however, is the crown jewel; a private sanctuary complete with a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite of quiet elegance.

The additional bedrooms, equally inviting, open to their own balcony access and share a beautifully appointed bathroom.

Practical luxuries abound, from ducted air conditioning to a fullsized laundry, and two secure side-by-side car spaces with a storage cage.

For Valley Estate Agent’s Alana Barker, who is managing the sale, the true magic of the home lies in its pairing of location and lifestyle.

“You have everything you need within a few minutes’ walk,” she said.

“It’s ideal for those wanting to downsize from Merewether or The Hill homes, where they are seeking to stay in the city but want a more low-maintenance lifestyle by switching to apartment living.”

Here luxury doesn’t demand upkeep, it simply invites you to live.

The Social Perks of Retirement Village Living

As life shifts and routines evolve, staying socially active can become more challenging. Factors such as losing or moving on from a partner, family moving away, health concerns or any number of life changes can impact our confidence and ability to stay socially engaged.

Retirement villages offer a vibrant, community-oriented lifestyle where friendships flourish and new adventures await. Choosing to ‘right-size’ and relocate to a retirement village is more than just a housing decision—it’s a lifestyle choice. And among the top reasons people embrace this way of living is the opportunity for social connection.

Retirement village living offers a unique chance to meet new people, form lasting friendships, and explore new interests in a supportive, community-focused environment. In fact, the Retirement Living Council’s Better Housing for Better Health Study (2023) revealed that retirement village residents are five times more socially active and twice as likely to spend quality time with friends and family.

Find your tribe at Oak Tree

Our boutique, established communities offer the perfect balance of privacy and connection—ideal for fostering genuine friendships with like-minded, independent individuals. You’ll be surrounded by neighbours at a similar life stage, making it easy to stop by for a friendly chat, share a morning cuppa, or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening.

Each village boasts a vibrant social calendar, with regular events and activities to suit a variety of interests. Spend time at the village centre, enjoy a swim in the pool at Boolaroo, a sunset barbeque at Broadmeadow or game of bowls at Kanwal. Visitors are always welcome at our Oak Tree Retirement Villages– whether it’s family, friends, or grandchildren. And yes, your furry companions are welcome too. Our villages are pet friendly because we know home feels complete with your best friend by your side.

LIFESTYLE

WITH JESS FARCHIONE

Every single person who has ever had an Instagram or Facebook account knows the truth that social media is just a highlights reel. A place where people curate the best moments, filter out the struggles and simply share what they want others to see. I wouldn’t be surprised if people without a social media presence are also well aware of this fact.

Even with the shift towards “raw and real” content (thanks Gen Z and TikTok), we are still hyper-aware of what we put out there and how it makes us look. We will bend over backwards to “get the shot” and even if the final product is a far cry from what actually happened or how we actually felt in the moment, we’ll happily accept the compliments, love heart emojis and praise.

Nothing made this point clearer to me than while overseas recently in one of the most stunning places in the world, the Cinque Terre in Italy. While my daughter and husband were enjoying a midday riposo (an Italian siesta), I parked myself along the shore where I happened to witness a photoshoot between a glamorous young Italian woman and her boyfriend. She in front of the camera, he behind.

She was beautiful and seemed to know exactly how to tilt her chin just so to get the shot. After a few minutes, she walked back to her boyfriend-cum-photographer to inspect his handiwork. Now I’m not fluent in Italian (but from her gesticulation and furrowed brow) she was not at all happy with his work. A heated back and forth ensued until she stalked back into position and started posing again with the fakest smile I’ve ever seen plastered on her face. And, it just made me think of all the times we ripped my daughter’s dummy from her mouth coz I didn’t want it in any pictures, all the times we took her out of her comfortable pram to try pose in front of fountain, all the times we tried to wipe her face mid-spaghetti coz I wanted to take a quick video…

Only for her to absolutely LOSE it! Why was I trying to capture moments that weren’t actually happening and in turn, just upsetting my little girl? When the beautiful Italian girl posts those photos, will she remember the fight she had with her boyfriend simply trying to get the shot? It was a great lesson in just enjoying what is happening in the moment and not being so hung up on getting it all perfect. •

It’s been a privilege to coach Knights, says departing O’Brien

Departing Newcastle Knights mentor Adam O’Brien admitted it had been a “privilege” to coach the “amazing club”.

The 47-year-old and the NRL organisation recently agreed to terms on a mutual separation after being released from the final two seasons of his contract.

But, he remained on deck to guide the side for its last two outings in 2025, against the Cronulla Sharks (31 August) and Parramatta Eels (7 September).

O’Brien, who addressed a media scrum at Newcastle’s Centre of Excellence, took over the role in 2020.

He led the team to the play-offs four times while in charge.

“My immediate feeling is gratitude and pride,” he said. “It’s been an honour to coach the Knights.

“From the moment my wife Sharyn and I drove into the Hunter from Batemans Bay, we have immersed ourselves in this rugby league

town and we have loved calling Newcastle our home.

“I would like to personally thank chairman Geoff Coburn, Philip Gardner, the Wests Group Board of Directors, staff, players, members and everyone who helped over the past six years.

“Your support has been enormous… and I sincerely appreciate it.

“We leave with wonderful memories and friendships, along with the genuine belief the club is on the verge of achieving something special and the time is right for change.”

Knights and Wests Group CEO Philip Gardner paid tribute to the significant contribution O’Brien delivered during his tenure.

“I would like to thank Adam for his hard work and dedication to our club,” he said.

“Under his leadership, the Knights returned to playing finals football for the first time since 2013.

“In 2023, our side finished in fifth place, delivering an unforgettable home semi-final victory in front of a sold-out McDonald Jones

Stadium, creating scenes not witnessed in Newcastle for more than 20 years.

“In his time at the club, the sold-out sign at McDonald Jones Stadium has been a regular feature.

“Adam will depart after 144 games as Knights head coach, sitting second on the all-time list behind Michael Hagan.

“So, we wish him and Sharyn all the very best for the future.”

Incoming Knights CEO Peter Parr will lead a process to select a new coach, who will be formally appointed by the board.

Sleapy’s Day awakens

SOUTH NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB

– SOUTHS MEREWETHER

Supporting Sleapys Foundation since 2009

We’ve been proudly involved with Sleapy’s Day and Sleapy’s Foundation from the very beginning. When Peter first became unwell in 2009, our then chairman Tim Butler, a former teammate of Peter’s, reached out to another former teammate, Peter Parr, who was CEO of the North Queensland Cowboys. They rallied Johnathan Thurston, Neil Henry and others for a Sports Luncheon at Souths Merewether to raise vital funds for Peter and his family. From there, Sleapy’s Day was born – and so too the afterparty back at Souths, which remains one of the most special and emotional nights of our year.

BRADFORD HOTEL

Supporting Sleapy's Foundation since 2025

This is our first year being involved with Sleapy's Foundation, and we’re thrilled to be part of something so special.

Sleapy’s Foundation is all about helping people when they need it most, and that’s something we’re really passionate about at the Bradford. We love being part of initiatives that make a real difference in people’s lives, and supporting Sleapy’s is another way we can give back to the community that supports us.

For us, community is everything. The Bradford Hotel is a local pub at heart, we’re all about creating a space where people can come together, celebrate, connect and support each other.

GBE GROUP

Supporting Sleapy's Foundation since 2023

Sleapy's Foundation it is so close to our hearts at GBE Group, as they support those facing life's toughest challenges.

Community to us is about a network of people who support, uplift, care for each other and reminds us that we’re not alone and that we’re stronger when we act together.

LISA MACKLIN PROPERTY

Supporting Sleapys Foundation since 2024

As a proud Novocastrian, family has always been at the very heart of who I am and everything I do. Newcastle isn’t just where I live—it’s where my roots run deep, and giving back to this community that has given me so much is one of my greatest priorities.

Just over 12 months ago, I had the privilege of attending my first Sleapy’s Foundation Gala. That evening opened my eyes to the extraordinary work this foundation does for local families in need. I left that night knowing, without hesitation, that Lisa Macklin Property had to be part of their mission.

VARLEY GROUP

Supporting Sleapy's Foundation since 2024

Varley Group has been a long-term supporter of the South Newcastle Rugby League Club for more than a decade and in 2024, the company jumped on board as the official sponsor of the Sleapy’s Day.

What led Varley Group to support the charity event was the foundation’s commitment to helping local families going through really tough times (sudden diagnosis, cancer treatments etc). Sleapy’s assisted those families when other organisations couldn’t.

Varley is very committed to contributing to the communities in which it operates, especially the Hunter region where it’s headquartered… and where the journey began back in 1886.

TK DISTRIBUTORS

Supporting Sleapy's Foundation since 2024

TK Distributors believes true leadership comes from showing up for the community. That belief has found its strongest expression in a partnership close to their hearts, supporting Sleapy’s Foundation for many years. That connection became deeply personal in 2016.

When close friends were navigating the heartbreak of childhood cancer treatment, the foundation stepped in. Seeing first-hand the tireless work of Peter and Robynn Sleap left a lasting impact on TK’s owners and team and recently, TK Distributors has proudly stepped up as a financial sponsor.
