From the editor

It’s high time the National Tertiary Education Union and University of Newcastle (UoN) work together for the benefit of the region..

The two organisations have been at loggerheads, ever since the latter’s $21 million cost-cutting plan – to slash jobs and degrees – was revealed in mid-2024.

One’s claiming more than 100 positions, as well as numerous courses, are in jeopardy, while the other is firmly denying it.

No matter whose side of the fence you might sit on, it’s a sad day when making a profit is considered a higher priority than educating pupils.

As the threat of AI (Artificial Intelligence) grows, learning has never been so important. And, that’s exactly what the UoN provides.

I’ve witnessed it first-hand.

Over the past few months, the Newcastle Weekly has collaborated with the university’s journalism department to assist students on their respective journeys.

The program might not rake in the money, however the knowledge they gain from their teachers is invaluable… and beneficial to the media sector.

It would be such a shame if the UoN’s focus of scrapping staff targeted that domain.

Newcastle Airport’s international terminal open doors for business

Newcastle Airport’s international terminal is now open for business, unlocking greater opportunities to connect the Hunter with the world.

More than 300 guests and passengers attended the official opening of one of the biggest infrastructure ventures for the region on Thursday 25 September.

The festivities included a RAAF celebratory flyby, Welcome to Country led by Worimi Elder Uncle John and Smoking Ceremony by Uncle Justin Ridgeway, music, a local produce showcase and, of course, formal proceedings featuring CEO Linc Horton, Minister for Defence Industry and Pacific Island Affairs Pat Conroy, Paterson MP Meryl Swanson, Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley, Port Stephens MP Kate Washington MP as well as representatives from Port Stephens Council and City of Newcastle (CN).

The terminal, along with the recently-

completed runway works, is estimated to facilitate $12.7 billion in economic activity to the Hunter over the next 20 years, via an additional 850,000 visitors.

It’s also expected to create 4,410 ongoing jobs through new tourism and trade prospects.

The multi-million-dollar project expanded the terminal’s footprint by almost 50% and enhanced the facilities for border services.

It involved construction of a holding area and gates with international/domestic swing capacity, too.

“The upgraded international terminal will mean Newcastle Airport can welcome more passengers through its doors, offering a better, smoother experience for regional travellers and incoming visitors alike,” Acting Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Julie Collins said.

“It’ll open up a world of opportunities for a range of industries by providing the Hunter

region direct access to international tourism and freight export markets.”

International flights will take off from the terminal this month, with Jetstar operating three weekly services to Denpasar Airport in Indonesia.

Construction begins on highlyanticipated Medowie High School

Construction is finally underway on the first new high school to be built in the Hunter Valley in more than 25 years.

NSW Premier Chris Minns joined Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos and Port Stephens Kate Washington for the sod-turning ceremony at Medowie late last month.

The facility will feature 29 modern classrooms, specialist workshops and labs, a multipurpose hall, library, outdoor play areas and sport facilities.

It’s expected to welcome students on Day 1 Term 1 2027.

“This is a milestone for pupils and families in Medowie,” Medowie Public School principal Allison Thompson said.

“It’s reassuring to know our graduates will have a seamless transition into secondary education, with a new school designed to help them thrive.”

Prurigo Nodularis

Clinical Study

Do you have diagnosed Prurigo Nodularis (PN)?

Equally-excited was Ms Washington.

“We’ve fought for this project for years,” she said.

“So, it’s a dream come true.

“The former Coalition spent more than a decade telling everyone we didn’t need a public high school here in Medowie.

“But, this will transform our community.

“It’ll give kids the opportunities they deserve, right here at home.”

Medowie is the fastest-growing suburb in the Port Stephens LGA, with the community’s population predicted to increase by more than 4,000 residents before 2040.

Since coming to office in 2023, Labor has worked hard to rebuild public education across NSW.

Major infrastructure projects in progress or completed across the Hunter include the recently-finished upgrades at Hunter River and Irrawang high schools, and work at Newcastle

This chronic skin condition is characterised by extremely itchy, raised bumps that appear on the body. The intense itch caused by PN can severely impact sleep and mental health. Finding a treatment and controlling the symptoms is often challenging, highlighting a need for more effective therapies.

Novatrials is seeking volunteers 18-75 years, living with PN to join a clinical trial of a potential treatment. The study involves a 1-year trial of a medication and requires visits to our Charlestown clinic.

Participants receive study medication and care from a dedicated team of health professionals and will receive reimbursement for travel to attend in-clinic visits.

Reconstruction Authority accused of ‘shrugging off’ landslip duty

Greens councillors are calling on the NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) for answers as to why it “shrugged off” New Lambton landslip responsibility.

The government organisation announced it would not be the lead agency for the recovery phase of the incident in a letter to City of Newcastle (CN) in July.

It came after more than a month of waiting and weekly reporting, eventually resulting in the RA leaving the job up to council.

Greens councillor Siobhan Isherwood publicly voiced her disapproval of the decision.

“I’m outraged that the Reconstruction Authority hasn’t even bothered to provide council, let alone residents, with an explanation as to why they haven’t taken on their legislated role in this instance,” she said.

“It’s one thing to decide to shrug off their responsibility to Novocastrians, another entirely to not have the decency to tell us why.

Vitiligo Clinical Study

“My heart goes out to landholders who face the aftermath of the May natural disaster every single day, managing living arrangement, insurance, and family life, with zero support from the state government.”

Cr Isherwood called on Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin to visit the site and provide an explanation.

Public documents state the RA’s functions include “facilitating, coordinating and directing the recovery, planning and rebuilding of affected communities, including repairing and rebuilding land and infrastructure and other development’, and exercising planning powers such as land acquisition and buybacks, administering resilience programs and funding, and ensuring community-led and culturally appropriate recovery efforts”.

“The landslip is clearly 100% within the remit of the Reconstruction Authority,” Cr Isherwood said.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease, causing loss of skin colour in patches.

Novatrials is seeking volunteers with vitiligo to join a clinical trial of a potential new treatment.

If you are over 18 years of age, either male or female and:

• have active or stable non-segmental vitiligo affecting 4-50% of the body,

• can attend appointments at our Charlestown clinic over the study period of approximately 6mths, you may be eligible to join this trial, subject to meeting other criteria.

Participants receive trial-related medical care and medication at no cost from a dedicated, caring team of health professionals. Participants also receive a reimbursement to cover the cost of travel and time for attending visits.

To discuss the trial further with our study nurse please call Paula on 02 4089 3745 or email admin@novatrials.com.au

Valley Estate charity ball raises thousands

Thousands of dollars have been donated to the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF) thanks to the overwhelming success of the inaugural Valley Estate Agents Charity Ball.

More than 150 guests came together at the East Maitland Bowling Club on Friday 29 August for an evening of entertainment, generosity and community spirit.

A live charity auction headlined the event, offering an incredible selection of prizes and driving support for the meaningful cause. Valley Estate Agents managing director Sophie Abela said the night exceeded all expectations.

“Over the past few years, we’ve grown from strength-to-strength thanks to the support of our loyal clients right across the Hunter Valley,” she explained.

“We were proud to give back to the community that has given us so much.”

The ball raised more than $20,000 in total.

“It’s very good to give back to a worthy cause,” Ms Abela said.

“It was a great feeling knowing the community supported that as well… and it was nice to be able to give them a fun night, too.”

According to the HBCF, 58 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer every day.

The Newcastle-based not-for-profit provides essential information, care and support for people in the Hunter undergoing diagnoses and treatment.

“With breast cancer diagnoses only continuing to rise over the past decade, there has never been a more important time to show support through generosity and donations,” a HBCF spokesperson said.

The idea for the Valley Estate Agents Charity Ball came after the annual Knockers & Moles fundraiser, previously run by the Hunter Melanoma Foundation and HBCF, was cancelled last year.

“I used to sponsor that event,” Ms Abela said.

“I thought ‘that’s no good’, because it was a good cause and I really enjoyed it.

“So, I decided to do my own.”

Following the event’s rampant success, Ms Abela confirmed plans were already underway for an even bigger and better Charity Ball next year.

“We were just so pleased with the feedback and responses,” she said.

“It’s been awesome.”

Wilderluxe bring luxury camping to Lake Keepit

Glamping has never looked so good. In the heart of country NSW, perched high above the sparkling waters of Lake Keepit, a new retreat is redefining the way we connect with nature.

Wilderluxe Lake Keepit, the latest venture from Reflections Holidays, is not just another campsite.

It’s an immersive escape which pairs the wild beauty of Big Sky Country with the indulgence of boutique accommodation.

With just eight luxury “Star Tents,” this intimate destination offers visitors a chance to switch off, breathe deeply, and experience the bush like never before.

Each tent has been designed with year-round comfort in mind.

A plush king-sized bed sits beneath a skylight that transforms into a private planetarium at night, while a fully enclosed ensuite ensures guests enjoy the comforts of a hotel in the middle of the bush.

The interiors feature rich textures and thoughtful details, complemented by a private deck and an outdoor bath, the perfect spot to soak as the sun slowly sets behind the Great Dividing Range.

Step outside, and nature is your constant companion.

Wilderluxe’s elevated location offers sweeping views of the lake, while native birdlife provides a soothing soundtrack to the day.

Kangaroos and wallabies frequently hop

past the tents, reminding guests it’s a retreat deeply grounded in its environment.

But, Wilderluxe is more than just a place to sleep, it’s a carefully curated experience.

Guests can take in Big Sky Dreaming, a signature short film blending western astronomy with Indigenous storytelling, before gathering at the communal fire pit to gaze up at the stars.

Days can be filled with adventure, whether gliding above the lake, exploring hiking trails, or paddling through clam waters.

For those looking for something more hands-on, there are cheesemaking workshops, cookery classes, and opportunities to immerse in the local food culture.

Easily accessible yet far removed from the bustle of daily life Wilderluxe Lake Keepit sits just 40 minutes from Tamworth Airport and 30 minutes from Gunnedah.

It’s the first of several Wilderluxe destinations set to open across NSW, with Eden and Byron Bay on the horizon.

In a world where travel often feels rushed, Wilderluxe offers something more rare, a chance to slow down, savour the beauty of the outdoors and reconnect with yourself in comfort.

The unwelcome souvenir TRAVEL TIPS

WWITH MATT & BRETT

e arrived home this week with one of the worst cases of jet lag we’ve ever experienced. After crossing countless time zones and spending over 30 hours transiting, we arrived at our own front door at about 9pm. We relieved ourselves of the compression socks, showered and settled on the lounge to decompress before bed. Although the fatigue was obvious, the sleepiness just didn’t come. We found ourselves heading to bed at 3am, still not sleepy but convinced we would sleep… we did not! And so the cycle of jet lag began.

If you’ve never experienced jet lag (lucky you!), it’s like insomnia on steroids. A constant state of haze where you can’t sleep at night but doze off in the middle of the brunch you went out for in an attempt to stay awake during the day. It can last for one or many days.

When you tell people you are jet-lagged, everyone seems to have an opinion on it. The most annoying is the person who tells you it’s mind over matter. Um actually, no! This is a real thing and there has been a mountain of research on how travel messes with the circadian rhythms that rule our sleep. With those people out of the way though, it seems that everyone has a solution to offer.

What seems to work for a lot of people is to take some meds that assist you to sleep on the flight itself, helping you to arrive home more refreshed. This is not an option for us with Matt’s view that if there is a problem mid-air, he needs to be awake and alert in case somehow his non-existent skills are needed to help safely land the plane!

Mindfulness and relaxation techniques seem to be another popular option, closely followed by just riding it out (while it’s horrible, it doesn’t actually last forever).

This week we’ve gone for this last option and are happy to say we got our first full night of sleep last night, feeling human enough today to write this.

There are so many positive benefits to travel, a little jet lag is just part and parcel of the whole experience. •

Daniel Johns Up close and personel

He’s been labelled enigmatic, unpredictable, reinventive, creative, talented, vulnerable and reclusive. But, throughout his career, Daniel Johns is probably best described as a “visionary”.

At the age of 12, he and Newcastle school friends Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou formed a band, originally named The Innocent Criminals, which three years later would dominate national and global charts as Silverchair.

In a short space of time, the trio enjoyed phenomenal success with albums such as Frogstomp (1995), Freak Show (1997), Neon Ballroom (1999), Diorama (2002) and Young Modern (2007), and hit singles Tomorrow, Pure Massacre, Israel’s Son, Freak, Anthem for the Year 2000, The Greatest View, Straight

Lines and many more.

Each record debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA Album Charts and collectively sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

Along the way, Johns became the first artist in history to claim APRA’s Songwriter of the Year award three times, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most innovative musicians.

When the group disbanded in 2011, the 46-year-old ventured out on his own, with several collaborative and unaccompanied projects.

In 2003, he joined forces with Paul Mac to create The Dissociatives, a Gold-certified venture that picked up ARIA and MTV honours.

His debut solo album Talk (2015) reached No. 2 on the ARIA Album Chart, while his partnership with Empire of the Sun’s Luke

"He’s been labelled enigmatic, unpredictable, reinventive, creative, talented, vulnerable and reclusive."

Steele, DREAMS, launched in 2018 and took them from Vivid Sydney to the stage at Coachella.

Johns’ songwriting has also reached far beyond his own enterprises: he co-wrote Flume’s Grammy-winning Say It featuring Tove Lo, and has worked with Zhu, What So Not and Slumberjack.

As musical director for the Emmy-winning series Beat Bugs (2017), he reimagined Beatles songs for a new generation. In 2021, he turned the lens inward with the Spotify Original podcast Who Is Daniel Johns?

Narrated by actor Guy Pearce, the series charted at No. 1 in Australia for five consecutive weeks and peaked at No. 3 in Canada, No. 11 in the UK, No. 23 in the US, No. 47 in Ireland and No. 58 in Brazil, highlighting his universal appeal.

Featuring contributions from figures as diverse as Billy Corgan, Tom DeLonge, Kevin Parker, Van Dyke Parks and former flame Natalie Imbruglia, the podcast mapped the personal and creative forces that shaped one of Australia’s most mysterious performers.

FutureNever – Johns’ 2022 second offering – continued his singular path, breaking ARIA chart history by going to No. 1 twice before becoming the longest reigning Australian top 10 album of the year and the highest selling new Australian record of 2022.

Released without singles, it was one of his most arresting full-length statements to date.

The same year, he staged the groundbreaking exhibition Past, Present & FutureNever, which showcased personal memorabilia from the artist and experimental exhibits, across four months at Rialto Melbourne.

Additionally, $5 from every ticket sold went towards the FutureNeverFund – a charitable fund Johns created to raise money to create better futures for people and animals in need across the globe.

"Now, after a couple of years in the wilderness, the Novocastrian will make a rare appearance on the Civic Theatre stage next month."

Now, after a couple of years in the wilderness, the Novocastrian will make a rare appearance on the Civic Theatre stage next month.

Daniel Johns in Conversation: What If The Future Never Happened?, an evening of storytelling, film and music, is slated to take place on Friday 7 November.

The recluse will discuss his early life and creative process, sharing never-beforeseen photos, moving archival footage and unreleased recordings straight from his personal collection.

He’ll reveal previously unheard demos –from four-track embryonic Neon Ballroom bedroom demos to the original songwriting session of Straight Lines from the band’s final album, Young Modern, to ideas for songs he had written that would never make it onto a sixth Silverchair offering.

Johns is also expected to play new tracks from his other projects, with each evening – in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and

Newcastle – promising a distinct experience shaped by the moment.

It also coincides with the worldwide premiere of his highly-anticipated short film, What If The Future Never Happened?

In these four shows, he’ll get up close and personal with fans, who’ll be invited to submit questions pre-event in each city, too.

“What If The Future Never Happened? is equal parts reality and fantasy,” Johns said.

“I’m as proud of it as anything I’ve ever done in my career.

“The orchestration took time… and the final result was worth it.

“To celebrate the release of the featurette, I’ll be sitting on stage, telling stories, taking the aux chord and sharing tunes that nobody has heard and sharing random ideas that couldn’t be realised or released.

"The recluse will discuss his early life and creative process, sharing never-before-seen photos, moving archival footage and unreleased recordings."

“Basically, turning theatres into giant living rooms. It would be great if some people showed up but I’m doing it anyway – you’re all invited.”

What If The Future Never Happened? was shot proudly in Newcastle on Awabakal Land with a local cast and crew.

Directed by James Medlam, it’s a genrebending, semi-autobiographical featurette that puts reality and fantasy in a hyperspeed spin cycle.

It’s 1994, mere months before a teenage rockstar called Daniel would conquer the music world in ways never-before-seen.

On this ordinary day in regional Australia, while escaping the routine torment of three local bullies, a chance interaction with a mysterious figure from the future will change Daniel’s Tomorrow forever…

Shot in 2022, Johns made the executive decision to hold it back while he completed it and to mark the 30th anniversary of Frogstomp, which took place on 27 March.

“The beautiful thing about time, is that it is always in the eye of the beholder,” he said on Instagram.

“Art is exactly the same,” he said on Instagram.

“As an artist you never know what time it is. It’s an ongoing quest to interpret happiness and sadness with a sprinkling of absurdity. It’s drama. It’s comedy. It’s poetry. It’s a song. It’s cinema.

“Everything is beautiful if you let it be.

“I have to go back in time to finalise something and, as a result, I won’t be on socials, my team will keep an eye on things. I will have my phone.

“All is love xx."

“HOW

TO PICK WINE LIKE A ROCKSTAR”

Being handed the wine list at a restaurant can feel like someone’s thrown you the microphone at karaoke, thrilling but slightly terrifying. Where do you start? Let me give you a few tricks that’ll have you choosing with style and confidence. First, think about the food. Keep it simple: light wines with lighter meals, solid reds with hearty dishes. Restaurants know their menus better than anyone, so their lists are usually built to suit what’s coming out of the kitchen.

If you’re with a group, don’t overcomplicate it. One versatile white and one approachable red will cover most bases. I’m talking about Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz blends — wines with personality but broad appeal.

Not sure about the brand names? Stick with the classics. Look for region and variety combinations that never let you down: Hunter Semillon, Barossa Shiraz, Clare Riesling, Coonawarra Cabernet. You’re already ahead of the game.

And don’t be shy — sommeliers are there for a reason. Ask questions, request a taste if you’re unsure, or buy by the glass to experiment without committing to a bottle. Wine should be discovery, not homework.

Cheese and Wine — The Real Love Affair

Pairing wine and cheese is like matchmaking, sometimes you go for harmony, sometimes you go for contrast.

• Hard cheeses (think Parmesan): Bold reds like Cabernet or fortifieds.

• Creamy Brie: Sweet wines, Viognier, Pinot Gris.

• Blue cheeses: Fortifieds, aged reds, Shiraz, Grenache blends.

• Washed rinds: Sparkling reds or tangy Muscat.

• Goat’s cheeses: Rieslings and Muscats with a zippy edge.

• Soft Ricotta: Moscato, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc.

• The wild, stinky stuff : Late-picked Riesling or aged Semillon, wines that stand their ground.

The key? Don’t get bogged down in rules. Play with flavours and enjoy it. Wine is meant to be shared, talked about and remembered. That’s the secret to owning the wine list, every single time. Remember, wine is about personality and pleasure — don’t just drink it, live it, share it boldly.

Live with the beach at your door in Merewether

7A RIDGE STREET, MEREWETHER

With the sands of Merewether at your doorstep, this home simply could not be better placed for buyers seeking a beachy retreat brimming with character.

The three-bedroom property, located at 7a Ridge Street, has been a holiday destination for hundreds, previously used as an Air B&B.

And, it’s obvious why, with its bright white façade and decorative eaves, the home boasts beautiful retro vibes once you step inside.

Walking past the pretty front porch and stained-glass door, one witnesses the spacious single level layout which boasts a generous open-plan and charming timber kitchen.

The timeless design features gas cooking appliances, wooden cabinetry and a beautiful breakfast island, perfect for enjoying everything from a quiet morning coffee to a illustrious dinner party.

The kitchen extends seamlessly to a private, covered alfresco dining area and a generous wrap around courtyard.

At the back of the home, the master is impressively-sized equipped with an ensuite and grouped around two more robed bedrooms.

Both the ensuite and main bathroom are tidy, with the main featuring a spa bath, shower and separate WC.

The home’s laundry is equipped with ample built-in storage and yard access.

One can live stress-free in the summer, as the property comes with ducted air-conditioning, keeping it comfortable while assisted by the

coastal breezes.

It also features a handy lockup single car garage, as well as two extra spaces along the side of the home, adding to the practical appeal.

“It would be an ideal home for someone looking for a single level home,” said Dalton Partners agent David Phelan.

“It’s in excellent condition.

“You could move in and live in it as is, or alternatively one can do a full renovation and turn it into a quiet spectacular property in a perfect location.”

However, the main drawcard for this lovely home is its picture perfect location, where you can tuck your board under your arm and run down to the surf, get a few laps in before breakfast, or walk to nearby pubs and eateries to catchup with friends.

While the home shares a block with a spacious two-storey dwelling, Mr Phelan said one can achieve true luxury by purchasing both.

“Being on a Torrens title means that whoever buys the property isn’t restricted by any strata title rules,” he said.

“They can do whatever improvements they want to the property.”

It’s not about slowing down. It’s about opening up more time and energy for what matters.

Connection that comes naturally

Our boutique villages are designed to foster community in all the right ways. Big enough to offer a vibrant social atmosphere, but small enough that you’ll never feel lost in the crowd.

• 21 Brunker Road, Broadmeadow

That makes it easier for neighbours to get to know each other, for friendships to form naturally, and for residents to feel part of something, whether it’s a chat over the fence, a shared activity, or a quiet moment on the patio.

Each village is guided by a dedicated Village Manager – a friendly, familiar face who oversees the day-to-day life of the community and helps ensure everything runs smoothly.

There’s never pressure to join in, just a welcoming environment where connection comes easily and comfortably.

More time for what matters

Moving into a retirement village is less about what you leave behind and more about what opens up.

With the maintenance taken care of, your loved one can spend more time doing what they enjoy: family visits, hobbies, social activities, or simply slowing down without the stress. And for you, there’s confidence in knowing they’re safe, supported, and exactly where they want to be.

LIFESTYLE

WITH JESS FARCHIONE

They say “mother knows best”… well, I can put my hand up and say “not this one”. I recently tried to use my two-yearold daughter to catch my husband in a lie. The results? Well, it would appear she is too young to be called to the witness stand, severely disproving my idea that she is a genius baby and knows way more than she’s letting on.

While I caught up on some work last Sunday, my husband Angus took our daughter Lucia out for brunch with one of his best mates and his little girl. When they came home later that day, I naturally asked how everything was, where they went, what she ate and what they did afterwards. I know it sounds like I was giving him the third degree, but I will defend my right to curiosity til the cows come home and are tucked into bed. After a fantastically detailed description of their yummy brunch at Thermidor (pancakes with maple syrup and a babycino), Angus mentioned that his mate bought his daughter an ice-cream after she spotted the ice-cream shop a few doors down from the restaurant. He added, “I had to distract Lucia the whole time while Lottie was finishing her ice-cream so she didn’t start asking for one as well”. The glint in his eye as he’s retelling this story just had me thinking it was a big, ol’ porky pie. I am not a huge ice-cream fan in general, but for our little girl who is having trouble sleeping – that much sugar before noon had me seeing red.

I also did not believe for one second that he was able to distract our very rambunctious daughter (who is obsessed with her little friend) to the point she did not realise Lottie had an ice-cream… or “CONE” as she calls them. I shot back, “you bought her an ice-cream as well, didn’t you, admit it!” He insisted, passionately, that he did not, but he could not keep that Cheshire grin at bay, fuelling my disbelief. I turned to our daughter and asked, calmly, without accusation, so she wouldn’t try to cover for him. “Lucia, did you have an ice-cream today?”

“YES”, she declared. Much to my vindication and dismay…

As quick as whip, Angus shot back…

“Lucia, did daddy let you swim in the harbour after breakfast too?”

“YES”, she declared again.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I think we can dismiss the witness as unreliable and take the wind out of my angry-at-ice-creambefore-noon sails. •

Holbrook fulfils long-held ambition after landing Knights' coaching gig

Justin Holbrook is still pinching himself after “winning” the race to mentor the besieged Newcastle Knights.

In fact, the 49-year-old – who made his playing debut at the Hunter organisation in 1999 under Warren Ryan – long held an ambition to return to the club in a coaching role one day.

And, that time arrived last month when the former halfback signed a deal to guide the NRL outfit over the next three seasons.

It follows a successful gig at St Helens in the English Super League, a brief stint at the Gold Coast Titans (2020-23) and as an assistant to Trent Robinson at the Sydney Roosters.

“Ever since I got into coaching, I’ve always wanted to come back [here],” Holbrook said.

“I spent time in Newcastle as a player (1999-2000)… and I absolutely loved it.

“I loved the city and I love how big rugby league is in the Hunter.

“So, over the years, I hoped I’d get an opportunity at the Knights.

“Even this season, when I came up with the Roosters, I spoke to Trent about it.

“I told him ‘I’d love to coach up here one day’.

“Luckily enough, it’s now happened and I’m excited about it.

“And, while I couldn’t wait to get up here, I wanted to finish everything off at the Roosters.

“I must thank them for their assistance, too.

“A lot of times, it doesn’t end so nicely if you announce you’re going to another club.

“But, they were great, very supportive.

“So, I did the end-of-year reviews with Trent (earlier in the week) and attended the presentation night, before driving to Newcastle on Friday morning.”

Even though the Knights collected the wooden spoon in 2025, after a horrific run of injuries, Holbrook knows what he needs to do to gain success.

That’s adopt Newcastle’s ethos again.

“The Knights’ DNA lays in the region,” he said.

“It’s what sticks out for me.

“There is a huge love for the game, not just from the players, but from the entire city, too.

“This area remains a rugby league heartland.

“When I was a player, or came here with an opposition team, everyone knew Newcastle was built on hard work and that you were in for a tough day at the office.

“So, people want to see that in their side.

“That will never change.

“Through the Knights’ successful years, it always centred on rugged defence and a freedom in attack.

“That’s what I want to try and instil with the boys.”

Despite Newcastle’s lowly position on the ladder in 2025, Holbrook remains confident he can turn things around.

“Obviously, I’ve just arrived and only getting my feet under the desk,” he said.

“However, this situation isn’t new to me.

“When I arrived at the Titans from England, they’d finished with the wooden spoon as well.

“But, I feel way better equipped this time around.

“One, in terms of experience and, two,

with the connection to this club.

“On the Gold Coast, I didn’t know any of the staff or any of the playing group.

“Whereas here, it’s different.

“I know the playing group and what the Knights have done, especially with a few signings the past couple of weeks.

“Honestly, I believe it’s all heading in the right direction.

“Peter O’Sullivan’s involved in the recruiting, so a lot of good work’s already been done, while Peter Parr and Chris James (director of football) are very experienced campaigners in the front office.

“They’ve told me about what’s occurring in the pathways, which is terrific.

“Every organisation is aware that if you can develop your own players, you don’t need to buy them.

“That helps in every facet, from the salary cap to the connection of the club.

“If you’ve got them in your own nursery, it’s family, it’s community.

“The good thing about Newcastle is that it’s already being addressed.

“I spoke with the staff and heard the effort they’re putting into the area, so hopefully we’ll reap the rewards from it.

“Yes, those things take time to fix, but I’m excited about the future."
