Newcastle Weekly contents
thursday 26 october 2017
This week From the editor I've been in the biz of community news reporting for almost four-and-a-half years now, and, in that time, I've formed invaluable connections with some of the Hunter Region's fantastic not-for-profits. One of those is Lifeline. I have a huge soft spot for our local Hunter Central Coast branch. I wholly admire the work they do to save lives and support those bereaved by suicide in our community. Suicide is the leading cause of death among Australians aged 15 to 44. This is not OK. One of Lifeline Hunter Central Coast's biggest fundraisers for its intervention, training and support programs is the biennial Brass Blokes Awards, which I was honoured to attend last Friday evening. Congratulations to 2017 winner Charles Webster, special recognition award recipient Dave Sams and all the other finalists – keep up the great work. This week we've cast the spotlight on yet another great community initiative: Cancer Council NSW's Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Relay For Life. Relay is a national fundraising campaign for the Cancer Council's research and support programs, without which, I'm sure, many communities would be worse off – including ours. We caught up with 16-year-old Chloe Banks, who survived an acute lymphoblastic leukaemia diagnosis at 15 months old, to talk about the importance of Relay For Life. Partnership helps those in need ifeline counselling has resumed in Belmont, two years after the service was suspended due to a lack of funding. Belmont 16s stepped in to save the day through the Lake Macquarie ClubGRANTS 2017 funding round, a state-wide give-
back initiative that, this year, saw 18 local clubs donate $377,000 to community groups. It means people in Belmont and surrounding areas of Lake Macquarie will once again have access to affordable counselling on all manner of personal and
relationship issues. Face-to-face, one-hour counselling sessions are now available every Monday at Belmont Neighbourhood Centre at a subsidised cost of $40, or $20 for concession card holders. Lifeline Hunter Central Coast regional manager, Rob Sams, said many people couldn’t afford a private psychologist or to wait for an appointment through the public health system. “Our counselling fills a muchneeded gap and it is for everyone,” Mr Sams said. “Our trained counsellors help those in crisis, but also help prevent people from reaching a crisis point.” Belmont 16s CEO Scott Williams said the club saw Lifeline’s service as a vital one that would benefit
BEFORE
many people. “Our funding of Lifeline’s counselling in Belmont is another example of local clubs helping local communities,” Mr Williams said. Mr Sams is now looking to obtain further funding to expand the counselling service locally. It’s just one of a suite of services Lifeline provides to help save lives and support those bereaved by suicide. Others include the 13 11 14 crisis support line, training, support groups and other community suicide prevention programs. To book a counselling session, phone Lifeline on 4940 2000. Visit lifelinehunter.org.au/find-help/ for more information on Lifeline’s counselling service. - Georgia Osland

Lowndes gives tick of approval He’s claimed more championship races than any other V8 Supercars driver, is a six-time Bathurst winner, and a Medal of the Order of Australia recipient. Craig Lowndes has been there, done that. So, when a fresh challenge
arises, the 43-year-old racing legend lights up. Newcastle Weekly spoke with Lowndes after he visited the Hunter Region ahead of next month’s inaugural Newcastle 500. He says the new circuit in the city’s East End has progressed well.
The 2.6-kilometre track takes in scenic views along Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle and Nobbys beaches, and Newcastle harbour. “There’s no doubt that from when we first came here on the fan day [in April], and what we were told was going to happen then, to seeing it now, it’s just fantastic,” Lowndes says. “We have no data, information or history to go off, which is always exciting. “It’s going to be about getting by on the seat of your pants, and working together with the other drivers and engineers.” Lowndes, who currently sits in sixth position on the 2017 drivers’ championship leaderboard, knows there will be plenty of room for improvement after the first few laps. “On race day, we’ll be trying to

improve the car, lines, markers and definitely improve in lap times over the weekend,” he says. “After the first lap in race one, we’ll look to pick up a second or two each lap.” The bulk of the civil and capital works have been completed as the Newcastle 500, set for 24 to 26 November, looms ever closer. Some of the remaining projects now underway include the building of barriers, grandstands, and the pit complex. Lowndes simply can’t wait to see the finished product. “I’m just looking forward to getting down there,” he says. “Newcastle is a great place to have a V8 Supercars round. “[The circuit] is a huge turnaround and the locals should be proud of it.” - Ben Murphy

news Keolis Downer eyes more bus drivers, network growth Under-fire private firm Keolis Downer has ramped up its efforts to recruit bus drivers in Newcastle. A number of local politicians have taken aim at the company ever since it took over the public transport contract on 1 July. Complaints have included pay disputes, rostering failures, and the cancellation of more than 300 services. But Keolis Downer Hunter chief executive officer, Campbell Mason, said he wanted to “grow the network and deliver more services”. “To achieve that, we are aiming to create long and rewarding career opportunities and provide extra jobs in Newcastle,” he said. The company is looking for
full-time and casual bus drivers who exhibit a commitment to customer service and safety. “Bus drivers have a fundamental responsibility for getting their passengers from point A to point B safely, but there is a lot more to the job than just driving a bus,” Mr Mason added. “Our drivers are our frontline customer service officers as they are the primary interface between our customers and our organisation.” Newcastle Transport is responsible for more than five million passenger trips per year on the current bus and ferry network. Airport puts safety first
A new awareness campaign in Lake Macquarie casts the spotlight on home security. The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) shows there were 776 incidents of break and enter (dwelling) in the local government area over a 12-month period to June 2017. During the same timeframe, there were also 570 cases of steal from dwelling. These figures have been listed as stable. Lake Macquarie council’s project officer safer communities, Scott Sloan, says the city has a reputation for being a safe and friendly place to live. “But the key is that we don’t want people to rest on that reputation,” he says. “There are straightforward and low-cost things people can do to help improve their home security, such as simply locking doors and windows.” The Lake Macquarie Crime Prevention Strategy 2015-2018 highlights the council’s role, alongside other government agencies and the community, in maintaining and creating a safer city. The strategy has targeted four issues in particular: domestic violence, residential burglary, motor vehicle
Newcastle Airport has joined forces with its Australian and New Zealand counterparts to make safety a priority. Local workers took part in an FOD (Foreign Object Debris) Walk last week to collect substances, debris, or articles alien to the airfield. FOD can be anything from boarding passes or luggage tags, to small pieces of metal and screws from stairs and baggage trolleys that may interfere with the take-off or landing of an aircraft. This year’s Airport Safety Week went from 16 to 20 October. It is an international initiative that aims to highlight the industrywide commitment to creating a safe working and operational landscape for passengers, airline staff, service providers and airport workers.

offences, and vandalism. Now, an online survey seeks to determine just how seriously residents take the issue of home security. “In the lead-up to, and proceeding, the crime prevention strategy campaign, we’ve had numerous community consultations – and a safe and healthy environment was really important,” Mr Sloan adds. “So, the launch of the survey is designed to get feedback on attitudes – we want to find out how serious people are about this.” Visit surveymonkey.com/r/T7YVQQY to complete the questionnaire. - Ben Murphy
Light rail construction continues in the city From Friday 3 November, Hunter and Scott streets between Crown and Perkins streets will be closed to traffic. Detours also remain in place between Auckland and Darby streets while construction continues in the area. Pedestrian access will be maintained and all businesses in the area will still be open. While temporary traffic diversions will be in place, Hunter Street (east of Brown Street), Wharf Road and King Street will remain available for road users. Please allow extra travel time and be prepared.

Assisted dying on the agenda Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery heard from the community on the divisive issue of assisted dying at a forum she facilitated on Tuesday. It was an opportunity for residents to be directly consulted on the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017 (NSW), which was publicly released in May, and formally introduced to parliament in September. The event, held at Fletcher Community Centre, was attended by
sport and veterans’ affairs shadow minister and member of the NSW Parliamentary Working Group on Assisted Dying, Lynda Voltz. Ms Hornery said assisted dying was a big issue in the community. “I wanted to give people an opportunity to hear from someone [Ms Voltz] who has been working on drafting the bill,” she said. “It is important for our community to have a say.”

Twenty-five Lake Macquarie residents took the plunge to become Australian citizens on Wednesday. The city welcomed the new residents – hailing from Sri Lanka and the Isle of Man, among other places – at its fifth citizenship ceremony for the year at Lake Macquarie council chambers. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser officiated the ceremony. “Sharing this special day with those who have chosen to become Australian citizens is always a privilege and one of a mayor’s most enjoyable duties,” Cr Fraser said.

A group of 32 students from St Peter’s Campus, Maitland will compete in the University of Newcastle’s Science and Engineering Challenge national final next month. More than 1,000 schools across the country have contested over 100 days of competition during the past year. The winning high schools from each state will now go head-tohead in a series of challenging Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities. Mr Jordan says team selection is crucial in order to achieve success. “We have eight groups of four students,” he says. “They have to be able to do every challenge thrown at them, so we go to a lot of trouble to make sure we have very strong groups.” He believes the annual competition boosts students’ confidence and provides future career opportunities. “It’s a competition that we can’t simulate in our school,” he says. “They compete in a pressurecooker environment; it’s really intense. “To be up against other schools, other states, where students are working together – it can give these

Live the life you choose At Walka Grange Lifestyle Village, you’re free to live the life you choose. Catering for the active and young at heart, Walka Grange is an over-55s village that offers security where you need it and freedom where you want it. Residents can engage in as many or as few social activities as they like, with the village Clubhouse a popular meeting place for yoga, tai chi and arts and crafts. There are only two villas left for sale at Rutherford, with Walka Grange preparing to lodge plans with Maitland council for a second village at East Maitland, within a stone’s throw of the newly-refurbished Stockland Green Hills shopping centre. Project manager Chris Unicomb says they’re excited for work to get under way. “The villas are very popular; by the time we build them there’s people ready to move in,” he says. “East Maitland already has 150 people on the waiting list.” Construction on the Rutherford village started in 2014 and it was released in seven
stages, with the East Maitland village likely to follow suit. Residents can choose from two or threebedroom villas with a selection of floorplans and colour schemes. Chris says he tends to meet people early in the process, doing his best to accommodate individual preferences. Occasionally, if enough people are seeking the same design modifications, Walka Grange will incorporate these into its floorplan offerings, meaning they are constantly striving to meet prospective residents’ needs. Walka Grange villas are designed to free residents from the demands of domestic maintenance and upkeep without sacrificing the freedom of home ownership. Some of the villas’ features include landscaped gardens, alfresco areas, reverse cycle split system or ducted air conditioning, and connection to a 24-hour monitored emergency call system – just to name a few. In addition to the aforementioned Clubhouse,
the Walka Grange complex also provides outdoor common areas, a community veggie and herb garden, a caravan and RV storage precinct and a community bus. With a whopping 112 hectares of park, lake and bushland at your doorstep, Walka Grange Lifestyle Village really is luxurious.

Food donations help hungry
New season swimwear arriving daily!
Charlestown state MP Jodie Harrison has praised the community’s generosity during Anti-Poverty Week. Ms Harrison called for residents to bring non-perishable food items into her office, which were then donated to Oz Harvest Newcastle – a food rescue charity – this week. The latest Foodbank Australia Hunger Report showed 169,413 kilograms of food was supplied to Newcastle in the past year. This is the equivalent of more than 308,000 meals. The report also found that, in the past 12 months, 3.6 million people, or 15% of Australia’s population, had experienced uncertainty over the source of their next meal. “I found it interesting that half of the people struggling with food

insecurity are actually employed – it is not just the homeless that are facing days and nights without a meal,” Ms Harrison says. “I would like to thank all of my constituents who donated items to this cause. “The food was given to Oz Harvest, who will distribute it to charities that support people in need in our region.” Anti-Poverty Week, which went from 15 to 21 October, aims to raise awareness about poverty, not just in the poorest countries around the world, but also in wealthier nations such as Australia.

news Wish-list swings into action Upgrades to five off-leash dog areas, improvements to a playground at Raworth, and the next stage of a shared pathway along Cessnock Road. These three projects have topped the Lower Hunter community’s wish-list over the past few years. And, Maitland City Council has brought them a step closer to reality after applying for $2 million in grants through the state government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. The council’s group manager strategy performance and business systems, Leah Flint, welcomed the opportunity to apply for funding. “The three projects are not in council’s current capital works program and therefore would not be delivered in the short-term without additional funding,”
she says. “The projects have been selected based on community and user feedback, and each can be delivered within the next two years. “Funding is not guaranteed, and the community’s level of support will be tested during the assessment process, but we are confident about the merits of each project.” If successful, the off-leash dog exercise areas at Raworth, Gillieston Heights, Rathluba, Telarah and Thornton will receive a combined $597,000, which aims to provide a fenced area, entry and maintenance gates, bin, seat, shade tree and a two-level water bubbler. Another $559,000 may go towards improvements at the Bakers Brickyard Playground at Raworth. The popular facility only opened last year, but users have

If Maitland council is awarded the $950,000 grant, it will be able to provide a cycleway bridge over Fisheries Creek and a 500-metre pathway from Fisheries Creek to the New England Highway. - Ben Murphy

MAAP House advertising moment
MAAP House: modular, prefabricated, hybrid homes MAAP House is a building company that focuses on minimum waste, minimum labour and minimum environmental impact. MAAP House and EF Building Solutions director, Daniel Reitsma, has been working on these architecturallydesigned and sustainable homes for the last two years and has built a prototype house that recently received MBA Building Awards. The MAAP House at Woodberry was awarded for Energy Efficiency & Environmental Sustainability and for Affordable Housing. These two awards were gratefully received and work in conjunction with MAAP House’s aim and vision of providing environmentally-conscious and cost-effective housing to the Australian market. MAAP House is an innovative hybrid system using modular and
prefabricated panels. The advantage of this building system is that construction of the panels and modules takes place in the factory, which is conveniently located in Tomago, keeping labour, material and wastes to a minimum. All trades are able to carry out their tasks efficiently in one location, with each trade having clear and exclusive access to enable them to complete their job to a high standard. Once completed, the panels and modules are transported (statewide) to the jobsite, where the house is then constructed on the steel piers and bearers. “Affordable and sustainable housing that suits our Australian
environment has become a necessity,” Mr Reitsma says. “MAAP House is able to provide a comfortable and environmentally friendly house that is flexible in design and durable in all weather conditions.” The MAAP House panels are fire, water and mildew-resistant, fully insulated and come with a two-pack paint finish. The wall panels are 2.7 metres high, and window and door panels can be located according to site aspect and individual design choices. The kitchen and bathroom modules come complete with appliances and fittings. The finish is of an exceptionally high standard; affordability does not mean a compromise on quality.

cover story Banks family steps up for Relay Most teens measure their hopes and aspirations for the future by goals; 16-year-old Chloe Banks measures hers by time. “I definitely have personal goals, but, for me, it’s also about hitting those milestones – five, 10, 15, 20 years,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. Chloe was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when she was 15 months old. Her parents, David and Cathy, tell of a “horrendous” ordeal. “It was mentally, physically and emotionally challenging,” David says. “Your world just shrinks; you can only think about tackling one day at a time – two, if you’re lucky.” At the time, the Speers Point family was living in Anna Bay and had to make regular trips to John Hunter Children’s Hospital for Chloe’s treatment. Chloe underwent six months of intensive treatment, predominantly at the hospital, and another 18 months of home-based care. David says while the hospital’s dedicated Kaleidoscope team was fantastic, it was the organisations wrapped around the treatment

process that were intrinsic to Chloe’s recovery. “Red Kite, Camp Quality, the Cancer Council – they were our support network,” he says. Today, Chloe is a healthy, thriving student and keen dancer. She says her early battle with cancer is a part of her, but it doesn’t define her. Now that Chloe is in good health, she and her family are determined to give back. As Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Relay For Life committee members, this will be the third year they’ve been involved in the Cancer Council NSW fundraising initiative. The annual event, held at Glendale’s Hunter Sports Centre, is one of many relays across the nation that raise vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information and support services. Teams rally to clock laps on the track, raising funds with every step, whilst also taking time out to reflect. This year the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie relay will be held on Saturday 4 November. And, Chloe says she’s more excited than ever. “The focus no longer needs to be on myself,”

Trio’s tricky balancing act for multiple sclerosis
Program promotes community inclusion
Cyclists have been doing the scenic and, at times, challenging ride from Sydney to Wollongong on two wheels for more than three decades. But, this year, sprinkled amongst the large contingent in the MS Gong Ride, will be three members from the Newcastle Unicycle Group. The trio have signed up for the 58-kilometre leg, which takes place on Sunday 5 November, in an effort to help people who are living with multiple sclerosis. They will ride from Engadine, in southern Sydney, through the Royal National Park, past Waterfall to the Otford Lookout at Stanwell Tops, on to the spectacular Sea Cliff Bridge, then along the coast, before finishing against a backdrop of sun, sand and surf at Wollongong. When this reporter called one of the unicyclists, Genevieve Nawrot,

sport Simmons fires early for 76ers Former Newcastle Hunters junior Ben Simmons has made an historic start to his NBA career. The 6-foot-11 point guard/forward was selected with the No 1 overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2016 draft, but missed all of last season after suffering a foot injury. Simmons is clearly making up for lost time now. In his first three games of the 2017-18 campaign, the 21-year-old recorded a stat line of 10+ points, 10+ rebounds and 5+ assists. These numbers haven’t been produced in the first three games of an NBA player’s career since 1960, when basketball legend Oscar Robertson achieved the feat. Despite Simmons’ individual brilliance, the 76ers have a 1-3 record to start the season.

Squires claims Mattara crown South Coast surfer Nick Squires has taken out the 2017 Michilis Mattara Surf Classic, a decade after first winning the competition. In the 56th year of what is one of the oldest continuously running surf contests in the world, Squires made the most of deteriorating surf conditions in the early afternoon to defeat Norah Head’s Troy Skillin by 17 points to 12.4 and pocket the $3,000 open men’s division winner’s purse. Earlier, Merewether’s Philippa Anderson claimed the women’s final, edging out promising Port Stephens junior Ellie Clayton-Brown, last year’s under-16 winner, for the $2,000 open/junior women’s first prize. Clayton-Brown’s brother, Mike, won the boys’ under-16 division, in a hotly contested four-man final that produced some of the best surfing of the day.
A record-breaking $80,000 has been raised for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service from this year’s Hunter Valley Mining Charity Rugby League competition. The annual event, which is organised by the Singleton Volunteer Support Group, saw 350 mining employees register for the ‘10s tournament, while more than 1,800 spectators cheered them on. Volunteer Support Group spokesperson Danny Eather said he was in awe of the community’s generosity. “This year’s event exceeded expectations in terms of spectators and the amount of money raised,” he said. “We are just blown away by the result.” More than 70 local businesses backed teams to help them reach
their fundraising targets. Coal Services Mines Rescue, Group 21 Rugby League Referees Association, Singleton Rugby League Club and the Singleton Rotary and Lions clubs all provided in-kind support and assistance on the day. “The Upper Hunter community, and the mining sector, are well aware of the vital work that the rescue helicopter provides to our region, and are very supportive of fundraising events like this to ensure that the service is available free-of-charge all year round,” Eather added. For the record, Glencore’s Ravensworth Rhinos were crowned men’s champions for the second year straight after beating Bulga Coal’s Saxonvale Raiders 22-0 in the decider. Hunter Hawkettes edged out Valley Vixens 19-10 in the inaugural women’s mining series.

time out Seafood scramble The season’s first box of signature salty-sweet Hunter River prawns will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Punters can bid on the prized box, fresh from the fishing trawler, at the Newcastle Commercial Fishermen’s Co-op from 8am on Wednesday 1 November. Locals will, however, need to jostle with Sydney seafood lovers, as they are linked in by live video conferencing to add a bit of heat to the auction. Newcastle Commercial Fishermen’s Co-op general manager, Rob Gauta, says the organisation is thrilled to support the Westpac
Rescue Helicopter Service. “This is our way of giving back to a local community whose love of fresh seafood has supported local fishing families for generations,” he says. On stand-by 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the rescue helicopter service has saved, and, with the community’s ongoing support, will continue to save so many lives throughout Northern NSW. Remarkably, it is a free emergency service and every contribution helps to ensure it stays in the air. Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service chief executive officer,
Who will be the lucky person to get their hands on the first box of Hunter River prawns?
Richard Jones, says the service is extremely grateful to be the beneficiary of the prawn charity auction. “Every dollar raised from the auction will help to ensure that the rescue helicopter is there for our community when and where it is needed,” he says. Revel in iconic 80s sounds There’s no doubt 80s music has transcended time, not the least of which is the iconic sound of Pseudo Echo. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly ahead of 80s Fest at Hope Estate on 4 November, Pseudo Echo lead vocalist and guitarist Brian Canham says the Melbourne‑based band has been busier than ever, garnering a new generation of fans. “Every decade has its qualities, but the 80s were bound to resurface further down the track,” he says. Established in 1982, Pseudo Echo forms part of an incredible line‑up at 80s Fest that is sure to evoke memories of yesteryear, including Paul Young, Go West, Taylor Dayne, Wang Chung, Cutting Crew, and Australian acts John Paul Young and the Allstars, as well as The Chantoozies. From Pseudo Echo, crowds can
expect a heap of their old hits, plus a few new ones sprinkled throughout the gig. Canham says the band has been working on a new single – a cover of Tina Turner’s Nutbush City Limits – reminiscent of their Lipps Inc Funky Town cover, which topped Australian charts in 1986, and again in 1987 in Canada and New Zealand. There’s still a little while to go before the single’s release, but Canham says they’ve been testing it out on crowds, such as Red Hot Summer Tour revellers, and, so far, it’s been well received. “We’ll certainly play a bit of new stuff at 80s Fest; it opens up the show without burning a good one straight up,” Canham says. Maestro celebrates new release Guitar maestro Bruce Mathiske will launch what he describes as his “best work to date” at Lizotte’s Newcastle on Saturday 28 October. Mathiske says his vision for soundawareness was to “produce a cohesive record of diverse, accomplished artists, with the music being sophisticated and accessible, utilising my own guitar-based global flavours”. While the new release, which Mathiske composed and arranged, is predominantly guitar-based, he collaborates with some of Australia’s most elite and diverse artists, including James Morrison, John Paul Young, John Harding, Chris Duncan, Andy Firth and Sally Walker. “Having all of these worldacclaimed artists bring my music to life has been such a joy and now that musical joy will be able to be shared with everyone,” Mathiske says.

Real people, real stories: that’s what Newcastle’s Real Film Festival is all about. Returning for its sixth year from 27 to 29 October, the festival promises to be bigger and better than ever, and is expected to inject an estimated $2 million into the Hunter economy. It celebrates the art of storytelling through film over three exciting days, providing emerging filmmakers an opportunity to screen their work to audiences ranging from local enthusiasts to industry heavyweights. Festival director Annette Hubber says the festival “puts Newcastle up in lights”, whilst nurturing homegrown talent. “We are very excited to announce, this year we have secured a number of advance screenings of major films that will premiere alongside local filmmakers’ films,” she says. “Each of the films have been chosen because they are either produced locally or their subject would resonate with the local audience.” This year’s program is brimming with a variety of entertainment, including the launch at the White Room (above Endota Spa, King Street, Newcastle), opening night after-party at Silo,

Other attractions include helicopter joy flights; military, classic car and community service displays; market stalls; and children’s activities. You won’t leave with an empty stomach, either, with plenty to eat, ranging from a casual bite to something more substantial at Rathmines Memorial Bowling Club, overlooking the Catalina Flying Boat Memorial. Newcastle jewellery designers Sara Spence and Madalynne Clifton have capitalised on 3D printing innovations from New York to launch their third collection. The Kate & Kole Āhua collection, which will be launched today (Thursday 26 October) at Abicus on Darby Street, Newcastle, is inspired by the stones and winding rivers of Aotearoa in New Zealand. With large stacking rings, mixed with smoother-than-glass river stones, Āhua brings boldness to Kate & Kole’s existing collections. The silver, rose gold and yellow gold

ensemble of bold rings are a new direction for Kate & Kole, with rings named Toka (rock), Ririki (pebble) and Awa (river). Each ring reflects a distinct, understated elegance. Using future technologies and past processes, each ring is designed in Newcastle using sketching and 3D modelling software. The pieces is made to order, then sent to New York for each wax mould to be 3D-printed. It is then placed in a container, where liquid plaster is poured in around it. Once the plaster sets, the wax is melted out, and the remaining

plaster becomes the mould. Your chosen metal is poured into the mould and set to harden, after which the plaster is broken away, revealing the finished product. Sara and Madalynne founded Kate & Kole in 2014 and have since produced two highly successful collections that, to date, have been sold and distributed online. But their third collection – Āhua – will see the pair launch into their first wholesale collaboration with another store – Abicus. The Āhua collection launch will take place at Abicus from 6pm to 7.30pm tonight.

Home beyond four walls Home is not bricks and mortar, it’s a feeling we create with those we love. So many of us attribute undue value to tangible things, and wonder why we feel weighed down by our possessions. Well, one family has packed only the essentials into four suitcases and is leaving it all in the dust behind them – at least for now. Meet Vanessa, Sean, Bambi and Leo. Together, they live what they call “the slow life” by the sea at

Palm Beach on the Gold Coast. Vanessa is a born and raised Novocastrian; daughter of proud parents Rick and Sue Prosser, whom many locals would know as the founders of Newcastle’s Soul Café, which provides free food and services to the city’s homeless. Vanessa and Sean met on the Gold Coast when they were 18, after which they moved home to Newcastle for a year. That year, Vanessa fell pregnant with their daughter Bambi.
It was the turning point of a grand adventure. “It got us thinking where we should live as a family, and Palm Beach was it,” Vanessa tells Newcastle Weekly. Home ownership – a dream that seems so out of reach for many young people – was already a priority for Sean, and Vanessa tells how she and Bambi fit into the puzzle. “Me being his partner, the best thing I could do was to not steer

him from achieving that and be right behind him; encourage him, cheer him on, sacrifice as much as I could and be right by his side,” she says. “In a relationship, I feel like if you have the same dream, anything is possible, and we had that.” When they were 19, the couple bought their first home, which they have just listed on holiday rental site Airbnb to travel the world for six months. It wasn’t an impulsive decision;

in the garden
When to water Wonderful rain last weekend will green up lawns and give neglected gardens a good drink. I say neglected, not critically, but indeed many gardeners didn’t take into account the extremely dry westerly winds we’ve had this winter. Water early in the morning or late in the day to avoid evaporation, but if conditions are extreme, grab a watering can and water new plants or those with a shallow root system (such as azaleas) during the day. Gardens should be watered daily during hot conditions, then at least every third day if they are mulched. Mulching is the best way to keep the moisture level above wilting point. It is wise to consider which plant species can withstand our hot, humid summers when
planting out a new garden exposed to wind and all-day sun. IN THE GARDEN I have found JUDY SHARPE that citrus can be quite resilient. Container-grown plants will need watering each day, sometimes twice daily.
This week • Deadhead spent rose blooms and apply a handful of dolomite to sweeten the soil after the rain. • Make sure tomatoes are well staked and watch for early blight. Add a side dressing of blood and bone. • Keep gardenias wellwatered. Yellow leaves may require chelated iron.

PICK OF THE WEEK Animal Kingdom Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2010) Animal Kingdom is the near-flawless tale of Josh (James Frecheville), a teenager torn between loyalty to his criminal family and leading life on the straight and narrow. Under the influence of his dodgy uncles (Ben Mendelsohn (pictured), Sullivan Stapleton and Luke Ford) and grandmother (Jacki Weaver), Josh’s moral dilemma is compounded when he comes to the attention of a cop (Guy Pearce) who believes the conflicted youngster needn’t travel the same path of violence that his relatives have.

Spectre
Sex And The City Saturday, GO!, 9.35pm, MA15+ (2008) Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker, pictured), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) are back and fabulous. This big-screen outing centres on the ongoing saga of Carrie and Mr Big (Chris Noth). Set three years after Big swept Carrie off her feet in Paris, the pair are preparing for their nuptials. But not all is smooth sailing. Meanwhile, Miranda’s life is falling apart after Steve’s (David Eigenberg) infidelity and Samantha is struggling in LA.
Wednesday, NBN, 8.50pm, M (2015) Daniel Craig’s (pictured) rebooted Bond stays close to the globetrotting, action-driven spectacle of earlier entries in Spectre, although it remains reliant on the long-established 007 formula. Picking up where Skyfall axed Judi Dench’s M and introduced a new generation of MI6 accomplices (Naomie Harris’ Moneypenny, Ben Whishaw’s Q and Ralph Fiennes’ new M), the muchanticipated flick opens with Bond in Mexico City on a mission to kill an Italian terrorist, which leads to a fast and furious helicopter scrum. Bond then discovers a tentacled criminal organisation called SPECTRE and the action ups the ante.

Work matters are likely to become important during the next 12 months and Gwendoline’s spare time will be taken up with fulfilling duties to others. This is a time of spiritual growth. The year ahead will not be a positive one, but if she works on her weaknesses, it will help to lay a foundation for the rest of her life. It is a good time to balance friendships and family life and to put all of her affairs in order.

ARIES MAR 21 - APR 20
CANCER JUN 22 - JUL 22
LIBRA SEP 24 - OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 20
Teamwork is the key to success and a remarkable new beginning is in store. Don’t take anything on face value there is no harm in getting a second opinion, especially if a health issue does not seem to be getting any better.
This is the ideal time to show your loved ones just how much they mean to you; if you can accompany your remarks with a gift, so much the better! Mercury and Jupiter in Libra indicate you have the diplomacy and strategy to create a win-win situation for all.
Jupiter in Scorpio indicates that some Librans will receive a windfall, while others will benefit from an endowment or insurance policy. You might be happy to let your partner take the lead, but the planets indicate that it is important for you to have your say too.
Jupiter indicates that you are about to make a bid for freedom making this is a good time to travel overseas, to plan a holiday or to explore new neighbourhoods. You may find yourself keen to expand your mind by reading about spiritual or philosophical subjects.
Venus is in Libra and it’s a great time for romance or to invite friends to your home for an impromptu celebration. Tread warily in all domestic matters and DIY renovations, and make certain that you follow all safety instructions before using power tools or anything electrical.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19
You can’t put off dealing with your family any longer; they are driving you to the edge of sanity and it’s time to bring them back under control. There will be a couple of lucky breaks that help you resolve a number of sticky family or relationship issues.
The Sun in Libra suggests that you will tire easily or become a little jumpier than is usually the case. So make certain to rest up, because let’s face it, you tend to go to extremes, mainly due to the fact that you think you are superhuman.
Jupiter will bring you luck on the career front, making strategy and financial planning favoured activities. It is time to assess your finances and to focus on dispensing small debts you no longer need to carry. For best results, communicate with your loved ones and map it out together.
GEMINI MAY 22 - JUN 21
VIRGO AUG 24 - SEP 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20
This is the ideal time for creating a calmer atmosphere at home. Jupiter in your work zone for the next 12 months sees a promotion or other recognition coming your way. Your boss and those from other countries will be especially impressed, avoid going over the top. Everything in moderation.
Life will be full of action and it’s time to explore a different side to yourself. Be more accepting, open-minded and forward-thinking; embracing the world gives you a better chance to embrace that special person when they cross your path. In fact, opposites attract you the most right now.
Be very careful of other people who approach you with get rich quick schemes! You are going to be made aware that you need to think carefully about your finances and to be careful of being the last of the big spenders. Avoid impulse buys.
The Sun in Libra is urging cooperation with others. It’s a time when you should learn how to share, not only your possessions, but also your thoughts and feelings. Shared resources need to be discussed at work or your employer might have to make some cutbacks.

V8 SUPERCARS I totally love my V8s. What can I say? I have two favourite drivers: Chaz Mostert and Cam Waters. It would be awesome to get the chance to meet either one at the upcoming Newcastle 500.
My favourite things PETS At the moment, I have three pets. I have a grumpy cat, who is 13, and two staffy dogs, who live at my grandparents’. I love playing with them, giving them cuddles and roughing them up.
CHOCOLATE My biggest love is chocolate. Even though I am not supposed to eat it, I can’t get enough of it. There are only two types I don’t eat – Turkish Delight and Cherry Ripe – other than that, I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
FAMILY AND CAR If I didn’t say family I think I would get into a lot of trouble. But my family have done so much for me over the years. From getting me to swimming meets, to helping me with my disability. I also love my car that was sponsored by the awesome team at Burton Toyota in Maitland.
Maddie Elliott OAM AUSTRALIAN PARALYMPIC SWIMMER
Maddie was born and raised in Gillieston Heights. She started swimming at the age of six months as a form of therapy for her cerebral palsy, as well as learn to swim. She first competed for Australia on an international level at the age of 13 at the London Paralympics in 2012. Maddie is currently sitting her final HSC exams and hopes to study Media and Communication at university. 66
TRAVELLING Whether it be cruising or travelling by plane, I don’t mind. I love going overseas and experiencing different countries and cultures. I have been blessed to be able to travel to quite a few countries during my sporting career. The best places I have been to? I would have to say Brazil and Los Angeles.
