This week

From the editor I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend; hard to believe it was our last until the Christmas break. Where has this year gone?!

Christmas goodies have already started to appear on supermarket shelves, and frankly, I'm choosing to pretend they haven't... At least for now.

This week's edition hits close to home (pun intended), as my long weekend had everything to do with the home and not much else. Ahh, the arduous task of moving house. Fun, isn't it?

Conditions cause for concern

H

omeowners have been warned to remain alert of the dangers posed by bushfires after extremely dry conditions fuelled a busy start to the season.

NSW Rural Fire Service Superintendent Paul Jones urged

residents to “take precautions” to protect their families and assets.

He said several strike teams had already been sent to assist local brigades with out-of-control fires in the past month.

A Central Coast crew headed to Tuncurry last Thursday, while

another helped battle the blaze at Richmond Vale, near Mulbring and Kurri Kurri, in mid-September.

“It was one of the driest winters we’ve experienced in many years,” Superintendent Jones said.

“Fires are starting easily and are proving to be very difficult to contain and extinguish.

“Without substantial rain, that trend will continue.

“So, people need to be very aware of the conditions and pay attention.”

Last month’s blaze in the Lower Hunter tore through the Richmond Vale Railway Museum, causing an estimated $1 million worth of damage to its collection.

Despite being heartbroken at the loss of precious stock, the museum’s board is eager to bounce back.

It has launched the Rebuilding Richi Appeal, which aims to restore operation at the site as soon as possible.

Museum spokesperson Graham Smith said the community’s support was greatly appreciated.

“Following the fire, the site was closed pending the outcome of environmental tests,” he said.

“There has been strong support from the rail industry, rail fan community, and general community for the resumption of museum operations.

“The museum board expresses its thanks for the many expressions of support.”

The appeal will include a trivia night fundraiser at Kurri Kurri Senior Citizens Hall on Saturday 28 October from 7pm, as well as online fundraising and other competitions.

news Initiative lifts the lid on youth mental health

‘Cause you gotta have faith Novocastrian Michelle Faithfull certainly knows how to put the “faith” in her surname.

That’s what it took to lead a small but determined group of women across Spain’s El Camino de Santiago trail last month.

Together, they walked 140 kilometres in five days, from Sarria to Santiago – all in support of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation.

Through combined fundraising efforts before and during the trek, they raised more than $42,000, which will help fund the foundation’s supportive care programs for women and men who are dealing with breast cancer.

These programs range from house cleaning and lawn mowing to patient transport services to and from medical appointments.

Team leader Michelle said the trek across Spain was always going to be a heartfelt, emotional journey.

“After walking for five days, we got a glimpse of the iconic cathedral as we reached the outskirts of Santiago,” she said.

The El Camino de Santiago trekkers stop to catch their breath on the trail.

“The physical exertion, the mental challenge and the sensory overload of immersing one’s self in another country and culture was always going to end in tears.

“All that training and fundraising for the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation had culminated in each of them soaking up this moment, standing in front of that cathedral and saying, “We did it”.

Michelle congratulated the convoy on their marvellous achievement.

Monday 9 October is national headspace Day – a chance to pause and reflect on youth mental health.

In its second year, the initiative aims to support the one in four young Australians who experience a mental health issue in any given year.

This year, headspace Newcastle is running an Instagram competition, which asks entrants to fill in the blank in the statement: “When I’m not in a good headspace, ________ helps me feel better”.

All you have to do is write down your answer on a headspace placard (downloadable via headspaceday. org.au), take a photo holding up the placard, and share it on social media using the hashtag #headspaceday.

Prizes include those things which typically help people feel better – café vouchers, concert tickets, clothes vouchers and sporting goods. headspace is a national youth mental health foundation that provides early intervention mental health services to 12-to-25-year-olds.

This covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support, as well as alcohol and other drug services.

Hospital staff protest lack of patient care Nurses and midwives have expressed anger over patients being short-changed thousands of nursing care hours at John Hunter Hospital during a seven-month period.

Concerned staff gathered outside the hospital last week to discuss a growing number of issues.

NSW Nurses and Midwives Association’s (NSWNMA) general secretary, Brett Holmes, said the situation was becoming untenable.

“The level of understaffing at John Hunter cannot continue,” he said.

“Our members are fed up with inadequate levels of patient

care, the opening of unfunded and understaffed beds, forced excessive overtime, sick leave not being replaced, an excessive use of underqualified staff, missed meal breaks and unpaid overtime – just to name a few.”

The NSWNMA claimed it had uncovered evidence of local patients missing out on 6,695 hours of nursing care from late December to July this year, as a result of Hunter New England Local Health District deliberately breaching the Public Health System Nurses and Midwives (state) Award.

“It’s unbelievable that the Local Health District is unaware of these issues, given they have been occurring for at least the last seven months and probably longer,” Mr Holmes added.

“Local health districts collect

a large amount of data from their hospitals and these staffing issues would have been evident.”

After months of frustration, John Hunter Hospital Branch members wrote to management in June to outline the range of issues that were generating serious patient safety concerns across the facility.

The NSWNMA has now called on Hunter New England LHD to fill all nursing vacancies, to ensure they meet the award requirements of six nursing hours per patient per day, or the equivalent of one nurse to four patients on the relevant wards.

“All nurses and midwives have a professional obligation to ensure safe patient care and, currently at John Hunter, they have been put at risk,” Mr Holmes said.

“The people of Newcastle and northern NSW deserve much better.”

news Simulated classroom a chance to road-test skills Just as pilots use flight simulators, University of Newcastle education students can now road-test their teaching skills in a safe and supportive environment.

TeachLive, a simulation teaching tool, uses a live performing actor who role-plays a number of student avatars to respond to the lesson delivered by the student teacher.

Head of the UoN School of Education, Professor John Fischetti, said the introduction of TeachLive would give students valuable experience and provide the management skills needed to become effective teachers of diverse learners.

“Using the TeachLive lab, our students enter a room where everything looks like a primary or

high school classroom, including props, whiteboards, and of course, learners,” he said.

“However, unlike the brickand-mortar setting, the lab is a computer-generated setting and the students in the classroom are avatars being controlled by a human moderator.

“This is not a game. It is a real-time simulation with the feel of ‘real teaching’.”

One of only two Australian universities to offer TeachLive, in partnership with the University of Central Florida, UoN will offer the learning experience to education students from the first year of their program.

Data being collected from this year’s pilot will help form a longterm research effort.

Deputy mayor excited about challenge that lies ahead

There was little hesitation from the city’s youngest-ever deputy lord mayor.

After beating independent Andrea Rufo to the position at Newcastle council’s first meeting, Labor’s Declan Clausen spoke emphatically about his credentials.

“I think the [local government] election results speak for themselves,” he says.

“I believe the community has endorsed the approach I’ve taken and the leadership I’ve shown.

“I’ve been a councillor for three years now and, across that term, I’ve served on a number of committees and done a lot of work to help improve the community.”

sport New format puts sizzle back into squash

Waratahs’ major step

An innovative sports centre is putting the sizzle back into squash, drawing on the experiences of T20 cricket to create a faster, shorter format suitable for all levels and ages.

Cardiff Squash Centre has developed Power Squash, where players can earn extra points by calling power plays and power points during each 15-minute match.

“Power squash is about making the sport attractive to a new generation of players who want a shorter, more interesting format,’’ Cardiff Squash Centre owner, Simon Ashley, said.

“We’ve been trialling the new format for several months, and the players love the changes.’’

The Waratahs Rugby Union Club has taken a major step in building its brand for 2018 by announcing plans to enter a team in the Hunter Women’s Rugby Union competition next season.

Club president Greg Taylor said the club was keen to enter the women’s tournament as part of a Rebuild The Reds program, taking in junior, men’s and women’s squads.

The Waratahs were one of the founding clubs of the Hunter Women’s Rugby Union in 1998 and had a women’s team for a number of years until recent seasons.

Sarah Campbell, one of the players driving the new women’s team, added ‘the Tahs’ planned to join the Maitland, Merewether Carlton, University and Wanderers clubs in battling for the 2018 title.

“It's very exciting as expanding the competition to five teams would be great for women's rugby in the Hunter,” Campbell said.

“We’ve already had a lot of interest from women in playing for the Waratahs next year.”

Unlike traditional squash, where competitors play the best of three or five games to 15 points, Power Squash scoring is unlimited.

The winner is the player with the most points at the end of 15 minutes.

Each player can nominate a Power Play, enabling the caller to earn two points per winning rally over five successive points.

A power point can also be called once per match and enables the caller to instantly add five points

Famed musical’s journey from New York to Newcastle

If Jonathan Larson were alive today, there’s no doubt he’d be proud of how successful his famed musical RENT turned out to be.

The American composer and playwright suffered an aortic dissection and passed away suddenly in January 1996 – the day before RENT’s Broadway preview.

It went on to enjoy a 12-year season on Broadway before closing in 2008.

Now, Hunter Drama is bringing the musical to Newcastle.

Director and Hunter Drama founder, Daniel Stoddart, explains:

“Because of the nature of [Larson’s] passing, it was staged in an incomplete way; he was still tweaking music and making final changes.

“Many producers have left it this way to honour his memory, and, as such, it’s got a real chunky vibe to it,” Stoddart says.

Bolstered by an all-star cast, including Daniel Wilson, Marty Worrall and Amy Vee, and supported by a strong ensemble, the Hunter Drama production opens at the Civic Playhouse on Friday 20 October and runs until 4 November.

The rock musical is set in the East

Village of New York City in 1991 – a time when the HIV/AIDS virus was rife. A group of impoverished artists trying to make it in Alphabet City’s heyday struggle to come to grips with the virus as those closest to them suffer.

Stoddart says the moral of the story is to live in the moment.

“Yesterday’s gone, and tomorrow’s not promised: there is no day [to live] but today,” he says.

It was the largest industrial action in Australian history.

One hundred years ago, angry workers at the Eveleigh Carriageworks and Randwick Tramsheds walked off the job.

At the height of the 1917 General Strike, around 100,000 workers from across New South Wales and other states downed tools in protest against government austerity programs, and the use of wartime rhetoric to justify unfair working conditions.

To mark the centenary of the strike, AWGIE award-winning writer PP Cranney has created a docu-concert, 1917: Strike, which will be performed at Newcastle & Hunter Valley Folk Club on Saturday 7 October.

The show has travelled around the state to packed audiences, and tells the story of the General Strike from the point of view of the workers.

1917: Strike is narrated by PP Cranney, with musical direction by Christina Mimmocchi, who performs alongside Chloe and Jason Roweth and Catherine Golden.

It’s been described as a fascinating and entertaining story of one of Australia’s greatest class struggles, which also makes links between past and present class conflicts.

The show will start at 7.30pm at the folk club (Wesley Fellowship Hall, 150 Beaumont Street, Hamilton).

Tickets are $10 for members, $12 concession, and $15 for nonmembers. Bookings not required.

time out Multi-talented star Todd McKenney is coming to the Hunter Region.

McKenney still shaking icon’s maracas Self-professed showman Todd McKenney simply enjoys the thrill of being on stage.

“I just love the sound of the applause,” he says.

The multi-talented star has no doubt grown accustomed to it over the years.

McKenney is best known for his portrayal of Peter Allen in the musical The Boy From Oz, and as a judge on the hit television show Dancing with the Stars.

Two decades since first shaking Allen’s maracas, he will now pay further homage in Todd McKenney Sings Peter Allen – The Piano Sessions 20th Anniversary Tour.

McKenney will perform all of Allen’s biggest hits, including Not the Boy Next Door, (I Go To) Rio and I Honestly Love You, while he’ll also tell stories about meeting Allen and playing alongside him.

It’s a role that has always been enjoyable.

“With the Peter Allen stuff, I pick it up and put it down, so it never gets old,” McKenney tells Newcastle Weekly.

“I keep being drawn to it because I love his music and we never do the same show twice, we’re always looking to pepper it with something different.”

McKenney, who will perform in an intimate and relaxed setting throughout his tour of regional Australia, is expecting even more cheekiness from fun-loving audiences.

In the past, crowds have brought along judges’ scorecards, with his ratings varying from one to 11.

“I don’t discourage it at all, but I couldn’t work out what they were holding at first,” McKenney laughs. “[And] if I’m talking about Dancing with the Stars, someone will yell out things like ‘who was your favourite?’

“I encourage that, it helps keep the show unique.”

Beatles fans unite: Newcastle is about to relive the heyday of one of the world’s favourite pop acts.

International hit tribute show Beatlemania on Tour will take the stage at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre on Wednesday 18 October.

The spectacular two-hour show recreates a true Beatles experience, with stunning costumes, state-of-the-art lighting and production, replica instruments, and all songs performed with exquisite attention to detail and in their original key.

“There is so much detail to get right for a show of this calibre,” Australian performer Cameron Charters said.

Charters, who sings live as Paul McCartney, has even learnt to play bass with his left hand, as McCartney did.

“We knew it would be hard being away from the kids, but it was a once-in-alifetime opportunity we had to take,” – Kim

Home is where the heart is The Elliotts are the quintessential Aussie family, right down to their perfect pigeon pair – daughter Chloe, 4, and son Cooper, 2.

They live in a modest home in Floraville and enjoy weekend adventures with their kids.

But, for a time, they were local celebrities.

The Block devotees would spot Kim and Chris a mile away: they’re the loveable reno rookies who starred in the 2016 edition of the highly popular Channel Nine television series.

He’s a detective and she’s an assistant principal; their union couldn’t be any sweeter.

Scoring the penthouse suite

in the old, heritage-listed soap factory in Port Melbourne, Kim and Chris renovated their hearts out, but finished last on auction day (still pocketing an earnest sum of $425,000).

But it didn’t matter to them.

The couple, who have now been married for five-and-a-half years, were never in it for the money.

“We watched the auctions every year and thought, we’ve got to apply,” Chris told Newcastle Weekly.

“Then, last year, we finally did it: we filmed a five-minute video on my phone and that was that.

“We went in there simply to have a good time.”

Cooper was only one-year-old and still being breastfed when Kim and Chris left to start filming.

While some other couples on the show, whose children were older, found it to be somewhat of a retreat, Kim and Chris struggled.

“We knew it would be hard being away from the kids, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we had to take,” Kim said.

“We also knew that whatever came from it would benefit them.”

True to their word, Kim and Chris recently used some of their winnings to install an in-ground pool and landscape their backyard, and buy a caravan to take Chloe and Cooper camping.

“It’s all for them,” Chris said.

“We weren’t in it for the fame and fortune; we had always planned to come back to our lives – which we’ve worked so hard to build – after the show.”

In a similar vein, the Elliotts say, while The Block helped them refine their handyman skills, they have little desire to renovate their family home, or buy and flip houses.

They are, however, considering buying and renovating an investment property in Newcastle further down the track as a retirement plan.

It’s a case of ‘watch this space’.

Many plants can be an enigma – none more so than fuschias and African Violets.

Both of these lovely plants can cause angst; African Violets in full bloom at point of purchase, begin to misbehave once taken home, and fuschias can just up and die for no apparent reason.

Instead of throwing violets away when they stop flowering, try these hints.

Find good light, about 40 centimetres from a window and out of direct sunlight, and keep turning the plant so it gets light on all sides.

African Violets need fresh air, but not a draught, and careful watering is essential.

Fertilise every two weeks in spring, summer and autumn. Never fertilise in winter.

Fuschias usually flower from June to December. At the end of this period, your fuschia will be short on nitrogen, and perhaps looking bedraggled.

This can cause semi-dormancy, which is the

plant’s way of counteracting our hot summers.

During their hibernation, fuschias aren’t growing a great deal, and they should only be watered sparingly.

You will get the best results if your fuschias receive early-morning sun, their soil is kept moist (but not wet), and they are protected from wind and frost.

This week • Prune established passionfruit vines by cutting back trailing arms to about 60 centimetres.

• Mangoes need plenty of water.

• Pay particular attention to plants grown in pots, particularly on balconies. A drink a day keeps the doctor away.

MY MUM My mum, Joan Cleary, is a huge role model to me. She is a kind, loving and selfless lady. She provided everything she could to all five of her children, often working three jobs to do so. I am so grateful for the opportunities that mum has given me, particularly my education.

I think it must be because I was born in Melbourne, but I really love the game of Australian Rules. I have followed Hawthorn in the AFL for more than 30 years. As I went to high school in Sydney, I opted to play rugby union, but have always loved following the AFL.

John was born in Melbourne and relocated to Sydney with his family when he was in primary school, before taking up residence in the Hunter Region in 2001.

He is presently the chief executive officer of Benhome Aged Care Facility in Maitland.

Whilst working for the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle, John appeared on the ABC’s 7.30 report on various occasions in July 2016 for his whistleblowing, advocacy and redress work for victims of institutional child sexual abuse, for which he received the 2017 Lake Macquarie Citizen of the Year award. John takes every opportunity to speak about resilience and men’s health issues because of his own work and also because he carries the legacy of losing his brother, Patrick, to suicide.

I have always enjoyed being a father. I love Hannah and Oliver so much and being part of their lives, enjoying time together and having a laugh. I sometimes feel that I am a man in a woman’s world when I turn up to events mainly surrounded by mums.

TRAVEL I didn’t travel much when growing up, mainly because I was focusing on my tertiary education and furthering my career. In recent years, I have had the opportunity to broaden my travel experience and am looking forward to continuing this in years to come. I love to keep active when I travel.
