The words “trust” and “integrity” have been used quite a bit over the past seven days in two separate arenas – politics and sport.

And, in both cases, the terminology meant absolutely nothing in the end.

Then, we had Australian Test captain Pat Cummins telling the media how much he respected under-fire national coach Justin Langer.

However, he remained noncommittal about his mentor’s future when asked.

On a number of occasions, the paceman could have been upfront about his thoughts – that he either supported the Hall of Famer or felt he was not a good fit for the squad moving forward.

But, he side-stepped the issue like a batsman facing one of his deliveries.

That was despite Langer backing Cummins for the role as skipper following Tim Paine’s sudden resignation.

New integrated cancer care centre a ‘game-changer’ The opening of GenesisCare’s integrated cancer care centre and research hub in Maitland is a “gamechanger” for Hunter Valley residents.

That’s according to the man behind the Mark Hughes Foundation and the ever-popular Beanies

The Newcastle Knights legend admitted he was honoured to be involved in the official proceedings to unveil the top-notch medical complex – which offers radiation therapy, medical oncology, advanced imaging, pathology and allied health services in one convenient location.

“I, unfortunately, see the devastating effects of cancer day-in, day-out through the foundation,” he told Newcastle Weekly.

“And, it’s definitely in our community.

“I’m a born and bred Kurri Kurri boy, who went to high school in Maitland, so this region means the world to me.

“It’s fantastic to know that when people from Singleton, Muswellbrook, Raymond Terrace,

Kurri Kurri, Cessnock – all these areas and beyond – get struck down with cancer, and they’ve got the fight of their lives on their hands, they now get the opportunity to be closer to home to receive treatment.

“That means more time with their family and more time to be surrounded by their friends.

“It’s so important to have that support network around you.

“Cancer is a tough diagnosis to process at the best of times for the patient, family and friends.”

Located adjacent to the recentlyopened New Maitland Hospital, GenesisCare’s integrated cancer care centre at Metford is home to a highly-advanced linear accelerator, capable of delivering the latest radiation therapy treatment techniques, as well as a highresolution PET-CT scanner used for

cancer detection, monitoring and treatment planning.

“We’ve [Mark Hughes Foundation] had dealings with GenesisCare at Gateshead, so we’ve got a strong connection there,” Mr Hughes said.

“But, I’m very proud of everyone involved in this project.

“It’s great to see them expand into the area so that the good people of the Maitland district, and the coalfields, get to benefit from this world-class facility.

“It’s state-of-the-art – there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be in Maitland.

“We now get the best treatment to give ourselves the best chance of fighting this disease.

“I think it’s a great community asset.”

Local school offers students a different way to learn “There are so many other ways to educate yourself, you don’t always have to sit in that stock-standard mould.”

That’s according to Newcastle High School Cooks Hill Campus leader Quinn Robertson.

While most students thrive in a

typical school environment, for some traditional assessments, classes and exams can be too much to handle.

So, they do things differently at Cooks Hill Campus.

while families, mentors and teacher advisors support teenagers during the process.

When they start at the school, pupils explore their “loves” and turn one of them into a project to complete over one term.

“So, they come up with a learning plan and we try to embed the curriculum into that plan through their projects and interests as opposed to starting with the curriculum,” deputy campus leader Nick Willis said.

“We just kind of flip it around in comparison to what it would be in a traditional setting.”

While the majority of the students don’t receive an ATAR, the school has other ways for them to gain entry to university.

Four who excelled in the program are Aoife Assisi, Via Newman, Miles

Bacic and Duncan Taylor.

The recent graduates all gained entry into their chosen university course after working incredibly hard during their time at the school.

Duncan, who will study mechatronic engineering at the University of Newcastle, said the school offered something you couldn’t get anywhere else.

“At mainstream schools you don’t really have the opportunity to look into what your passions are and explore the kinds of things you want to end up doing for the rest of your life,” he explained.

“That is one great thing; you can explore that here.

“My time was absolutely great both educationally and personally.”

Dive into the world of one of Australia’s best

If you swim regularly at Newcastle Ocean Baths or Wallsend Swimming Pool, chances are you’ve seen Michaela Werner gliding effortlessly underneath the water looking very much like a dolphin.

The 42-year-old Novocastrian mother-of-three, who can hold her breath for up to six minutes, does in fact draw on a technique used by all mammals to slow the heart rate and conserve oxygen.

Michaela is a freediver, currently one of just two Australian women who has dived 200 metres with one breath.

It is a gift she describes as “leaving the surface stuff behind”.

“I’m driven by the passion to find out how long and how far I can dive on a single breath of air,” she told the Newcastle Weekly.

“All of us have spent nine months in water holding our breath. To me this is where I feel the best. I’m a water person, it has always felt very natural for me to be in the water.”

After spending much of her childhood swimming in a pool in Slovakia, Michaela now boasts more than a decade of freediving experience.

Using a large monofin to propel herself through water with minimal effort, at depth she seeks what she refers to as “nothingness”.

“When you take the breath away it forces you to be in the moment,” she describes. “There is nothing before, nothing after. It’s just what is now.”

In these moments, Michaela says time stands still.

“Even when you have so much noise and busyness on the surface, like the kids jumping in the water and the ladies doing their aqua aerobics – it’s loud,” she says. “But, the second I go underwater it’s peaceful.

“I call everything else the surface stuff. I leave everything on the surface and it’s just me underwater.”

Ironically it was while taking part in another water pursuit that Michaela discovered her craft.

“I was scuba diving up on the North Coast and I couldn’t equalise,” she explains.

“As I was struggling, 26 metres took me half an hour to get there on my tank breathing, I saw a group of freedivers head down, mingle with sharks, head back. They did this for longer than I could stay down, and I thought ‘that is amazing, I want to learn how to do that’.”

She completed a freediving course in Bondi 13 years ago.

“That’s where my journey began.”

And, while at peace beyond the surface, Michaela admits she is aware of when she’s nearing the end of her breath.

“It’s not hurting, it’s like any sport – you go through sensations of pain and discomfort but you just learn to talk positively to yourself about it,” she says.

“Obviously you feel the urge to breathe, like everyone else, but you just know it’s okay and it’s just the CO2 getting higher in your blood, so you just keep going.”

And, like most athletes, a robust inner fortitude is needed for her to reach great depths.

“Most people can train very hard and improve themselves physically but for the very long dives, like the 200 metres, it is all about the mental strength,” she says.

“As you go deeper you have to equalise because the pressure of the water is compressing you, the air in your lungs and sinuses and ears have to constantly equalise.

“Even mammals feel the urge to breathe, it’s not that scary.

“All of us have the skill to hold our breath, it’s just that most don’t spend time on it, learning about it, so they lose the ability.”

And for Michaela the ultimate reward is simple – to go down deep.

“I want to find out how far I can go,” she says.

The national record for freediving for women is 200 metres, for men it is 218 metres.

“I’d like to go further than 200 metres one day,” Michaela explains.

“What drives me to give my best in freedive training is my deep desire to find out what’s inside of me – performance wise, and by doing so have the ability to share what I’ve learned with others. My goal is to become a high-performance coach for top level athletes.”

For now, the freediving instructor would like to share her knowledge with a younger demographic.

“This year we’d like to start educating teenagers about safety in the water, breath holding and breath training while spearfishing,” she says.

“There are too many young people dying because they dive out there in the ocean alone. They go spearfishing and they dive with a lot of weights on which makes it easy to get down, but it makes it really hard work to surface, and that is when you need your strength the most.

“I’m envisioning a free talk for anyone who is willing to listen. Nick – my safety angel and dive buddy – and I show up for half an hour and talk about how to train your breath-hold safely, what to do and what not to do in the ocean, and then possibly show them how to do it.

“I have this knowledge and I feel like it could save someone’s life.

“We take breathing for granted, until we don’t know when our next breath will be.

“Breathing changes everything.”

Program offers relief to selfless Hunter groups Hunter not-for-profit organisations that delivered food and care hampers to community members during the 2021 lockdowns can now apply to have some of their distribution expenses reimbursed.

It’s all thanks to the Resilience NSW COVID Regional Community Support (CRCS) program.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said local groups could recoup up to $30,000 of costs incurred, including fuel, couriers and logistics outlays.

“During the pandemic, organisations from across the Hunter stood up to help their fellow community members with deliveries of vital supplies when they were needed most,” he said.

“I want to extend my gratitude

to everyone who contributed to these efforts and acknowledge the outstanding spirit that has carried us through this challenging time.”

The CRCS program will be administered by the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR).

FRRR CEO Natalie Egleton said regional community groups had worked hard to assist their communities, despite themselves facing challenges.

“We have worked closely with Resilience NSW to ensure that the reimbursement application process is straight-forward,” she added.

Run by Tania Weekes and Annette Hill, The Blank Canvas Gallery is a space for local artists to connect with others.

“Annette and I decided to open this place so we could have a space to create our artworks, be creative and exhibit our own work and other people’s work,” Tania said. “[We also want to] involve the community and hold some special events and exhibitions for local artists.”

“We’re seeking local artists who want to exhibit their work here,” Tania said.

“It’s a reasonably small space but you can get quite a few paintings up and we also want people who have interesting handmade objects they might like to sell, some sort of pottery or jewellery.”

“We want other artists to come in and do workshops, too,” Annette added.

“Someone who does a different style to us can come in and we can learn from them.”

Moving forward, they hope the gallery will continue to grow and become a popular place in Port Stephens and the Hunter.

According to the duo, not enough people know about the site.

“Those who we’ve met and talked to about it, we’ve had a really good reaction from,” Tania said.

“We’ve had people come in and say ‘oh this is just what Raymond Terrace needs, a creative space’ but because we’re hidden away down here and because of all the lockdowns not many people know that we are here.

“We want to get the word out.”

Stylish, minimalistic plants are the preferred option at the moment The most popular plants sought after today would have to be the indoor variety.

Even if your home has a garden, house plants have become a Mecca for young and old.

I’ve found that although palms and ferns are still desired, stylish and minimalistic plants are more preferred at the moment.

In fact, indoor plants have really been cultivated from being grown in the garden or in glasshouses.

One typical plant is a Yucca. When sculptured, they can be tall with a bushy head, great for a narrow space, but also easily grown on the garden.

When choosing plants for your home, a simple idea is to select those that won’t go out of fashion.

For example, Peace Lillies and Mother-in-laws tongues.

Also include classics such as philodendron (now available in many different varieties) and dracaenas.

Look at plant leaf colour and shape as you can’t rely on flowers for the focus indoors, although Peace Lily (Madonna Lily) is one that does repeatedly flower.

Urban living in apartments and villas leave residents with little garden space, so indoor plants have become extremely popular.

One of the reasons for balcony planting is the need to have privacy from neighbours.

However, that can create problems, particularly for those living close to coastal salt and winds.

This requires experimenting.

So, when you go to your local nursery or garden centre, describe which way your balcony faces and, most importantly, the amount of sun and shade.

There are plants that can tolerate low light areas such as aspidistra, which is a very tough plant.

It’s a little slow growing, but it requires little water, a bit like the very popular Zanzibar Gem, a hard one to beat if you neglect your indoor plants.

I have also found that Parlour Palms, aptly named, as once parlours in older homes were dim and dark, Syngoniums and Peace Lillies are other examples that may help you with low light.

• Citrus leaf miner is particularly invasive this year - it can be sprayed, but this will need to be continual.

• Scale and mealy bug are both prevalent inside and out - spray with Malathon and White Oil. • Gardenia, Murraya and Hibiscus need to be given a kick-start with cow manure if ground grown.
