It took just one elite athlete to make a mockery of our country’s government and health officials.

Whether you like the guy or not, world No.1 Novak Djokovic produced the biggest serve of his illustrious tennis career to humiliate Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews.

His win in the Federal Circuit Court on Monday, which will allow him to defend his crown at the Australian Open next week, poses many, many questions.

The main query being: just who is to blame for this farce?

It appears, according to Judge Anthony Kelly, the 34-year-old Serbian did everything asked of him, even though he remains unvaccinated.

So, where does that leave the players who reluctantly received both jabs on government advice… in order to take their spots in our prestigious Grand Slam tournament?

They must be upset with the outcome, too.

Hunter family shares story to help raise awareness Thornton’s Cleary family is on a journey most people could not even fathom – three out of four members are living with Neurofibromatosis (NF).

NF is a rare lifelong genetic condition that causes tumours to form on nerves in the body, including the brain and spine.

“Our NF journey started with my husband Steven, he was the first one in his family to have it and then when

you have kids you have a 50% chance of them having it, and both our kids got it,” Gillian Cleary said.

“Max was diagnosed at six weeks and Tiarney at 12, both with cafe au lait spots, which are birthmark things, and luckily, that’s all that Max ended up with.

“Steve’s got the neurofibromas, which are the external tumours, and Tiarney got the internal tumours growing in her head.

“She got brain cancer when she was three-and-a-half and we conquered that one and went into remission, but she also has bilateral optic nerve gliomas and once they join together, she’ll be blind.

“Unfortunately, she also has another brain tumour now and it’s terminal.

“When we found out, our world shattered, it’s heartbreaking.”

Twelve-year-old Tiarney now has an MRI every three months to monitor the tumour growth and has fortnightly chemotherapy in a bid to buy her some time for more effective treatments to become available.

For Gillian, the most difficult part is not knowing what is going to happen. She describes it as like living with a ticking time bomb that could go off at any second.

“You don’t know what is coming around the next corner, it’s scary,” she said.

“I don’t know what the future holds and how much worse it can get.

“It’s very much like a ticking time bomb.”

Gillian says she would not be able to get through it all without support from the Children’s Tumour Foundation (CTF).

The charity’s mission is to offer hope for everyone impacted by NF through its support services and continued research.

“If you are having a bad day, they are a place that can help,” Gillian said, “CTF has been amazing, I could not have gotten through the last year without them.”

the media industry’s “good guys” was suddenly released from the network.

His dismissal, and that of his brother Andy as NBN’s longserving chief of staff in July, led to an outpouring of anger, frustration and grief on social media platforms.

It is understood the sacking occurred just days after the television station’s Christmas party – and with no warning.

An email detailing his departure was circulated on Monday 13 December, together with the announcement that weatherman Gavin Morris would transition to the news desk to present with Natasha Beyersdorf from Monday 31 January.

One staff member described the mood in the Newcastle office

as being like a “morgue” when employees heard about the decision.

But, through a Facebook post on advertising agency Out of the Square Media, Lobb thanked loyal viewers, local and state-wide, for their kind words.

“After many happy years of bringing you the news, I was just as surprised as you were recently to find out that my time on the desk was over,” he said.

“I just wanted to let you know that from my days on the road reporting and bringing you the stories of the region through to presenting the news, I have loved every minute.

“And, in recent weeks, your messages of support and love have been truly incredible.

“From reaching out to me

personally on social media… wow, there was even a petition that thousands of you signed.

“So, thank you, I feel so grateful.

“What’s next?

“Well, I am going to take a bit of a break but, hopefully, I will be seeing you somewhere soon.

“Thank you again for your love and support – and bye for now.”

The online petition, calling for NBN to reverse its decision, was created on Thursday 16 December and reached more than 1,500 signatures within hours of being launched.

“Local viewers hold great respect for Paul, who displayed a very professional presentation each evening,” creator Victoria Rey said.

Harry scoots in to solve Newcastle’s traffic woes Harry Hillard dreams of traffic-free roads in Newcastle one day.

And, the St Joseph’s Merewether student is determined to play a role in achieving that. In fact, he’s designed an electric scooter that runs off renewable energy.

After engaging with experts from both community and industry, Harry recently showcased his design to esteemed panel members at the Catholic Diocese of MaitlandNewcastle’s (DMN) Virtual Academy online presentation day.

More than 100 pupils from throughout the region also exhibited their individual projects, hoping to make the world a better place.

To say the judges were impressed is an understatement.

Every student tackled a conundrum, from encouraging people to return to businesses in the

Newcastle CBD to planning the ideal community; from solving transport woes to becoming self-sufficient in the future; and much more.

So, Harry’s no-nonsense traffic notion was just one of many to garner extra attention.

“I designed an electric scooter – that way there would be less cars on the road and less emissions,” he said.

“And, if they were advertised well enough, they’d be a big hit.

“There are some around but they’re not exactly legal.

“You can only ride them on private land.

“I thought I could make them safer to use on roads.

“There’s a speeding cam, so you know how fast you’re going.

“It would have some capped [speed] limits to it, too, in certain areas, like the ones currently around

roads and footpaths.”

Sadly, Harry admitted it might be left to his “generation” to solve the issues surrounding climate change.

“Emissions are going up, which is a problem,” he said.

“And, our world leaders aren’t doing much to combat it.

“They need to create a solution.

“I came up with the idea while watching a news story about electric scooters – and how more people are riding them.

“I actually thought to myself ‘they’re not that safe’.

“But, they can be if the right rules and technology are implemented.”

Newy lifesaver warns risks are not just your own Riley Petherbridge has achieved a great deal in his 18 years.

Aside from winning Hunter Youth Surf Lifesaver of the Year 2020/21, the Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) member also volunteers 100 hours a year patrolling one of the city’s most popular beaches.

He helps out with nippers, teaches Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) to youngsters, and last month he volunteered with the Hunter surf

lifesaving team that assisted with the Upper Hunter floods – all while completing his Year 12 studies.

The (now former) Macquarie College student joined Newcastle SLSC in January 2019, completed his Bronze Medallion that year and his Silver Medallion in 2020.

The busy teen also stems from lifesaving heritage, his mother Melissa Petherbridge was a nipper at Redhead Surf Lifesaving Club,

patrolling the beach in the first few years of female participation.

So, during what is expected to be a busy summer at the beach, the Toronto-raised lifesaver wants beachgoers to know the risks they take have a ripple effect.

“When you don’t swim between the flags or don’t wear a lifejacket when you’re rock fishing you’re putting all of us at risk, not just yourself,” he says.

“There are a lot of rocks at Newcastle beaches, many that are hidden underwater, and they can be treacherous.

“Knowing what to do if you get into trouble in the water is so important.”

Hence why Riley is passionate about the nippers program.

“Thanks to Newcastle Permanent we’re able to keep programs like

nippers running,” he says.

“We’re essentially creating lifesavers of the future, through learning.

“There is really no substitute for years of board and swimming experience, you can almost tell who’s done nippers and who hasn’t. It doesn’t compare to swimming in a pool.

“And then, even when they are older, as a teenager going to the beach with friends and being able to make informed decisions about ocean safety is invaluable.

“It’s a must.”

Through his work in lifesaving, Riley has learned skills in intelligence, planning, communications, and dispatching of emergency services.

All attributes he will take with him into his further education.

Vow to save our GPAAH Labor leader Anthony Albanese has vowed to save the Hunter’s GP Access After Hours (GPAAH) service if victorious at the next federal election.

Despite local MPs Sharon Claydon, Joel Fitzgibbon, Pat Conroy, Meryl Swanson, Sonia Hornery and Labor candidate Dan Repacholi taking up the fight in recent months, the facility at the Calvary Mater Hospital closed its doors on Christmas Eve. Operating hours at similar amenities at the Belmont Hospital, John Hunter Hospital, Maitland Hospital and Westlakes Community Health Centre in Toronto were reduced, too, due to continuous cutbacks and freezes to Medicare.

Mr Albanese, who visited Newcastle earlier this month, said his party would reverse more than

$500,000 of annual Liberal cuts.

And, that should secure the future of the crucial after-hour healthcare clinics.

“Prime Minister Scott Morrison has refused to rule out supporting a recommendation for a further funding cut, which if approved would end this vital service,” he explained.

“This is a devastating blow to the Hunter community. Especially in the middle of a global pandemic.

“Almost every Hunter family has used this vital service. It sees 50,000 patients a year and provides 70,000 telephone consultations, alleviates pressure on overstretched hospitals and has been estimated to save the broader health system almost $22 million per year.

“But, unlike Mr Morrison, we’ve heard the message loud and clear.”

Artist designs rashies for reconciliation Indigenous artist Riki Salam, of the Mualgal, Kaurareg, and Kuku Yalanji Peoples, has collaborated with the Cancer Council to raise awareness around cancer journeys within First Nation communities.

The Journey of Hope collection aims to start conversations in the wider Australian community.

According to Cancer Council Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are 40% more likely to die from the disease than other Australians, despite similar overall incidence.

Funds raised from Journey of Hope products will go towards prevention and support programs, to work in partnership with indigenous communities nationwide.

Now’s the time to plan for gardening year My apologies to regular column readers - last week I should have begun info for the first three months of the year - January, February and March.

It is probably too late to remind anyone that had a living Christmas tree inside not to plunge it straight out into the full sun.

They need to be given a big drink and gradually eased from the shade into a sheltered spot where it will get at least half day sun.

Annuals have definitely become untidy, the elements haven’t been kind to flowers this year.

Dig them out and fertilise - replant petunias, lobelia, marigolds and alyssum, which will give colour through to autumn.

Roses should be deadheaded and given a boost with Sudden Impact.

Take care during January not to prune shrubs on a really hot day when new growth may be burnt.

If uncertain, wet an old mat, lay it down overnight on any brown areas, turn it over early in the morning and see what has come up during the night. Nelson Bay development sees a return to inner city living Of the 56 Angelina Apartments for sale in the heart of Nelson Bay, 25 have pre-sold off plan.

The one, two and three-bedroom units located on Donald Street, have been snapped up by buyers from the Hunter, Central Coast and Sydney – within seven weeks of their October release date.

LJ Hooker Nelson Bay real estate agent Graeme Schmarr says the popularity of the eight-storey, architectdesigned apartments is indicative of a return to inner city living.

“The trend appears to be a return to living in big buildings that are lowmaintenance and offer a lifestyle, close to shops and restaurants, and right on the waterfront.”

Mr Schmarr, who has worked in

the industry for 33 years, says the Docaaba Pty Ltd development is the first of its kind in two decades.

“It’s a great building,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.

“And, it’s the first time in 20 years that a purpose-built residential building has been constructed right in the centre of Nelson Bay. “The last was Oasis, which sold off plans in 1998 and began construction in 2003.”

Angelina Apartments all boast large open-plan living areas stretching out onto generous balconies, many with ocean views.

Each has smeg cooktops, range hoods and ovens, as well as bosch dishwashers and Caesarstone

bench tops.

Yet, it is the location that Mr Schmarr says is its greatest appeal.

“They’re located just 200 metres from the d’Albora Marina,” he said.

“It’s the only building in central Nelson Bay that is a flat walk to the marina, the shops, restaurants and the waterfront.

“Residents can own a boat and literally roll out of bed, stroll down to the marina and launch it, and maybe even grab a coffee on the way.”

The first soil of the Angelina Apartments development is set to be turned in late February.

Sales range in price from $550,000 to $1.4 million.
