Well, we’ve reached the end of another year.

And, that in itself is a big achievement.

Who would have thought 2021 could be deemed tougher than 2020?

But, it kept throwing up curveballs, from more lockdowns to several variants of COVID-19.

Then, we faced the burning question – to be jabbed or not.

That mandate not only divided a nation; it also caused division among family and friends.

However, we still endured through it.

And, just as we appeared to see a ray of light, Newcastle and the Hunter became “ground zero” for the latest outbreak.

From a media’s perspective, it’s all terrific theatre.

But, ultimately, we’re just reporting on the events in question.

People have a greater thirst for information these days, good or bad, thanks to the pandemic.

Amid all the doom and gloom, however, numerous locals – young and old – rose to the occasion, providing inspirational stories for all to read.

To the NW team – Elizabeth, Rebecca, Peter, Vicki and Julie, thank you for your brilliant efforts the past 12 months.

Palmer prevails, Baker falls after tight mayoral races Independent Ryan Palmer has retained his mayoral position at Port Stephens… by the skin of his teeth.

Final counting in the NSW Local Government elections is now done and dusted, with the incumbent holding on in a tight two-horse race.

Mr Palmer finished with 24,187 votes, or 50.6%, just ahead of Labor’s Leah Anderson with 23,620 or 49.4%.

Ryan Palmer, pictured with his family, will remain as mayor of Port Stephens following his narrow victory in the NSW Local Government elections.

“I am extremely honoured and truly grateful to the people of Port Stephens for putting their faith in me once again as mayor,” he said. “We have achieved so much together.

“And, with more than a 15% increase in first preference votes from last election, the people of Port Stephens have shown they support a progressive and positive council.

“I look forward to working with you all. Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way and believed in what Port Stephens can achieve.

“There is a lot of work to do and that’s why I put my hand up once again.”

In a big shock, sitting mayor Loretta Baker lost her spot to Philip Penfold at Maitland.

Independent Mr Penfold picked up 18,569 votes, or 34.3%, to edge out Ms

Baker (Labor), who claimed 17,133 or 31.6%.

Then came Ben Mitchell (Liberal – 7,888 or 14.6%), John Brown (The Greens – 3,715 or 6.9%), Michael Cooper (Independent – 3,427 or 6.3%), Brian Burke (Independent – 2,096 or 3.9%) and Shahriar “Sean” Saffari (Independent – 1,353 or 2.5%).

Labor’s Kay Fraser was the clear winner at Lake Macquarie.

She collected a whopping 69,105 of the overall ballot – or 53% – to surpass Liberal’s Jason Pauling, with 28,824 (22.1%).

Only five votes separated Lake Macquarie Independents’ Luke Cubis (16,206 – 12.4%) and Independent Rosmairi Dawson (16,201 – 12.4%).

It was a similar story for City of Newcastle. Labor’s Nuatali Nelmes romped home with 42,052 (41.9%) from Independent John Church

(27,329 – 27.3%), The Greens’ John Mackenzie (14,256 – 14.2%), Liberal’s Jenny Barrie (11,683 – 11.7%), Independent Rod Holding (3,015 – 3%) and Socialist Alliance’s Steve O’Brien (1,940 – 1.9%).

Cessnock will welcome a new mayor following the retirement of Bob Pynsent.

Labor’s Jay Suvaal captured the honours with 15,629 (42.8%), in front of Independent Ian Olsen (9,946 – 27.3%), Liberal’s John Moores (6,916 – 19%) and The Greens’ Janet Murray (4,006 – 11%).

At Singleton, Independent Sue Moore retained her role after collecting 5,142 (37.4%) from Danny Thompson (Independent – 3,811 or 27.7%), Tony Jarrett (Labor – 3,085 or 22.4%) and Belinda Charlton (Independent – 1,717 or 12.5%).

Gavin’s on his bike again after life-saving surgery After recovering from an accident that put his life on the line, Gavin Dixon is as strong as he’s ever been.

In September 2020, the cyclist was competing in a race at Broadmeadow when he flipped off his bike and crushed the right side of his body.

“It was 50 laps, and it was the last bend of the last lap and I was thinking I had a chance to win,” Gavin said.

“But, I lost control of the bike and flipped onto my right side and I broke my collarbone, shoulder blade and seven ribs. Three of those ribs I broke in two places and I punctured my lung and severely damaged my right hand on the asphalt.”

After the accident, Gavin was transported to the John Hunter Hospital where he was put in the care of director of trauma care and surgeon Professor Zsolt Balogh.

Across a few surgeries, Professor

Balogh successfully repaired the cyclist’s bones while respecting his wishes to not cut through muscle, to preserve upper body strength.

After performing the procedures, about 13 hours’ worth of surgery, Professor Balogh says Gavin’s made an incredible recovery.

“He’s really outperformed all of my expectations,” he said.

“It’s amazing, this is what we dream about, and this is why we are doing what we are doing.

“Most of our patients I would say do well considering the extent of their injuries but as somebody who is getting almost fitter and even more motivated than before that is quite pleasing.”

When asked about Professor Balogh, Gavin was quick to sing his praises.

“I have this expression: ‘if Humpty

Dumpty had a great fall and all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty back together again, they should have called Professor Balogh because he would have put Humpty back together again’.

“I tried to give him a gift several times and he just wouldn’t take anything at all, so all I can say is thank you.

“I was very lucky.”

After his surgery, Gavin went to physiotherapy to begin the recovery process. Three months later he was finally able to hop back on his bike.

Fast forward to now and you would not know that Gavin was involved in a life-threatening accident.

The father-of-two reunited with Professor Balogh in early December to tell him about a recent victory.

In February, at the NSW Masters Track Championships Gavin took out the bronze medal for his age category in the two-kilometre pursuit event.

We’ve got you: Marine Rescue is preparing to be “Be prepared, wear a lifejacket, plan for the day ahead and log on to the Marine Rescue app.”

That is the sage advice from Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie Unit Commander Malcolm Druce, ahead of a season he fears could be “the worst yet”.

As head of the state’s busiest waterway saviours, Mr Druce is concerned a surge in leisure priority will bring record numbers of boaters to the Hunter waterways this summer, prompting a call to take extra care to ensure no lives are lost at the start of 2022.

His team of 155 volunteers are called to an average of two assists per day during the summer months, making it the busiest on the NSW coast.

It is also charged with protecting boaters on the largest saltwater lake

in the southern hemisphere.

“Our team conducts an offshore assist, or ocean rescue, once every week during the warmer months,” he said.

“On average one of those will be a level one rescue, which could be a sinking vessel, a person in the water, or a serious medical injury.”

From January to March 2021 Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie was called to 177 assists, 161 on the lake and 14 in the ocean.

Eighteen of these were classified as being a “danger to life”.

“We’re expecting that we’ll get smashed again this summer, it could possibly be our worst yet,” Mr Druce said.

“As a result of COVID, people are going out and buying boats. They’ve got spare money, they’re renovating houses, they’re taking more local

holidays, buying jet skis, and buying boats.

“So, we’re expecting a lot more out on the water.”

One of the greatest challenges facing Mr Druce and his team is the unknown.

“Many of our boaters come from outside the area and are navigating waters that are fairly unknown to them,” he told Newcastle Weekly.

“Swansea bar is notoriously dangerous, it’s one of the most treacherous water crossings in the state.

“About 12 months ago we had an incident in which a gentleman came off his jet ski on the Swansea Bar and couldn’t get back on.

“They were being swept out to sea.

“We activated our jet ski, which can travel much faster in a straight

“But, we can’t help you if we can’t find you.

“If we receive a distress call, we’ll ask for a location. Now, if this person is in an unfamiliar area it doesn’t matter how many landmarks we try to ask them for, if it’s dark and if they’re in trouble, this just adds to the rescue time.

“We’re asking everyone who goes out on a boat or watercraft this summer to log on to the Marine Rescue app and just let us know where you’ll be and what time you expect to be back.

“That information doesn’t go any further than us, it just helps us keep an eye out for you.”

“We’ll have someone in our radio room every minute of every day, every day of every year.

“We’re also a designated search and rescue coordination centre which means that if there’s a major maritime search and rescue event the emergency services will collect at our base and activate a coordinated approach from there.

“We’ve got you.

“But, first, we ask you to be prepared, make sure you’ve got life jackets, plan for the day – meaning check your boat, have enough clothes and food and water, and log on to the marine rescue app or radio.

“That way we’ll all have a better summer.”

Swansea set to undergo dredging project in 2022 Enough sand to fill 20 Olympic swimming pools will be removed from the Swansea Channel in the new year as part of a $7.5 million funding package for dredging projects.

NSW Maritime acting executive director Darren Wood said the Swansea Channel, a popular destination for recreational boaters, was considered a key location under the NSW Coastal Dredging Strategy.

“Funding had been allocated for a major dredging campaign of the Swansea Channel in 2022, improving the functionality necessary to maintain navigation channels and provide access to Lake Macquarie that has become restricted by natural sand shoaling,” Mr Wood said.

“This is one of at least 27 projects being delivered by the NSW Government’s $205 million maritime

stimulus package, which is forecast to create an additional 425 jobs.

“The funding is delivering major improvements to maritime infrastructure and facilities statewide, to help the community safely access, use and navigate our inland and coastal waters. It will not only deliver a boost for locals and tourists, it will also help the state’s post-lockdown economic recovery.”

Transport for NSW is working to get through the necessary environmental approvals prior to awarding a dredging contractor.

“We expect dredging can get underway in the first half of 2022.

We thank the community for their patience while we deliver the best possible outcome,” Mr Wood said.

Southlakes Men’s Shed says thanks for a cool donation It took a while to get there but the sentiment was no less heartfelt when Southlakes Men’s Shed members offered their thanks to Matt Alcorn from Allrite Airconditioning this month.

Gathered at their Morisset headquarters on 6 December, the group had a chance to thank the local tradie in person for his generous donation.

Allrite Airconditioning had installed a $3,500 air-conditioning unit at the group’s Ourimbah Street location two months ago.

Hampered by COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, the group waited to invite Mr Alcorn onto the premises to show him first-hand how much the new equipment was appreciated.

John Mulcahy said his group could now continue to meet throughout the summer.

“It can get very hot in a tin shed in Morisset in the middle of summer,” he admitted.

“Especially when there’s a group of men in there who are all working on various projects.

“This was a very generous donation and we’re all very grateful to Matt.”

The group, formed in 2013, had contacted Allrite Airconditioning four months ago, knowing they needed to sort out some cooling before the hotter temperatures set in.

After they’d sought various quotes from local businesses, Mr Mulcahy said he feared tight finances would stall the process.

“I wasn’t there at the time,” he said.

“But, I know Matt came to the shed and measured up and chatted to the men.

“He knew our finances were tight and I think he just wanted to do something to help us out.

“I heard that when he left that day he said to the men ‘leave it with me’ and days later he had it sorted.”

The gift’s generosity is in line with Men’s Shed values, Mr Mulcahy says.

“We’re about men’s health and caring about men,” he told Newcastle Weekly.

“The purpose of our existence is to make one another feel welcome, and to look after one another.”

Mr Mulcahy says the group is always keen to welcome new members and are currently seeking those with executive management skills.

Waratahs opening doors for young female rugby talent The Waratahs continue to open doors for junior female union players in the region and 2022 will be no exception either.

The organisation is now inviting young girls to play in an exciting rugby 7s tournament kicking off in Newcastle on Friday 11 February.

Youngsters born in 2009 and 2010 are eligible to join the under-13 squad, while those born in 2007 and 2008 can showcase their skills in the under-15s.

The Waratahs Junior Rugby Union Club president Chris Grieve admitted the plan was to enter two teams in Hunter Junior Rugby Union’s 2022 Girls Summer 7s competition.

“We’re eager to be represented in both age groups,” he said.

“The popular seven-a-side format runs over six weeks, with training already underway (at the Waratah Oval No.2 Ground).

“That gives the newcomers plenty of time to learn the basics of rugby 7s.

“The tournament is a great opportunity to introduce players to the game and The Waratahs.

“They can experience playing in a family-friendly club without committing to an entire winter season in 2022.”

Former Hunter Wildfires representative Theresa Mauli praised her club for creating a pathway for local youngsters.

“It’s fantastic news for women’s rugby,” she said.

“Especially, as the Hunter Wildfires are trying to build themselves up for the Jack Scott Cup. “It has been hard mixing that with grassroots.

“But, if our juniors are ready, and they’re getting trained at this age, it will make the Wildfires so much

stronger for the Hunter in years to come.

“We’ve been part of the Girls Summer 7s before, however we’re entering Waratahs-only teams for the first time, which is terrific for us.

“Our senior side is number one in the Hunter.

“So, it’s fantastic we’ve got a number of girls coming through the ranks who can see that – and have

something to aim for.”

Long lunch anyone? Lovedale to return in 2022 Lovedale Long Lunch, the muchloved boutique festival in the heart of the Hunter Valley, is back on the calendar in 2022 – set to be hosted on 14 and 15 May. After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the committee has pulled out all the corks to ensure its signature event returns to serve up another extravaganza.

Lovedale Long Lunch is a progressive lunch that runs all afternoon on Saturday and Sunday,

with some of the Hunter’s leading chefs teamed up with seven Lovedale wineries to offer guests fabulous food, great wine and live music, alfresco among the vineyards.

Rinse the chicken and pat dry. Wash the oranges under hot water, pat dry and slice thinly. Rinse the sage and shake dry. Slide the sprigs underneath the chicken skin together

with 3 orange slices. To make this easier, gently lift the skin off with your fingers to loosen it carefully.

Preheat the oven to 190°C. Season the chicken with salt and brush it with the marmalade until it is completely coated before transferring it to a roasting dish. Peel and quarter the onions. Crush the garlic cloves in their skin. Rinse the tomatoes and rosemary and pat dry. Add the onions, garlic, tomatoes, rosemary, remaining orange slices and chicken stock to the roasting dish with the chicken.

Place the orange chicken in the preheated oven (bottom rack) and cook until done, about 50 minutes, basting it throughout with the liquid.

If the chicken starts to take on too much colour, cover the dish with a sheet of baking paper or foil.

Serve with crusty white bread.

to inspire others. Rather than have them running all over the world though, their latest adventure has seen the duo reflect on their own lives in a new book.

The Greatest Feeling in the World is a 288-page memoir that explores the highs and lows of what they went through “growing up gay in Newcastle”.

Rod says it offers a raw look at what life is really like for them – on social media and reality TV everything is not as it seems.

“We are being super vulnerable and hoping it helps other people if they’re going through the same heart aches that we did,” he said.

It follows their lives as young kids all the way to now.

“It's honestly the best book ever, it’s the story of our lives,” Tim said.

“It’s about our highest of highs where the reader is going to be hysterically laughing but also our lowest of lows where it was just rock bottom, and the reader is probably going to be sobbing.

Christmas can be garden’s most neglected time of year Two days out from Christmas and summer fi nally arrives.

But, did we really want the heat and humidity?

Personally, I committed to

water a young friend’s basil and parsley, and his indoor plants, while he went on a four-week holiday to Lord Howe Island.

I made this vow when it was still cold and wet.

Now, like all of my readers who made similar commitments, we need to ensure they don’t come home to dead plants.

Although many of them aren’t venturing away from home this year, thanks to COVID, Christmas can be the garden’s most neglected time of the year.

While you may be basking away in the sun, it looks, weather wise, your plants could be baking.

To those gardeners who are staying at home this year, and I would imagine that’s a great many of us, there is a lot of work

to be done.

Summer pests are beginning to enjoy the warm, humid weather, the worst of these being mealy bug which presents as sticky cotton wool and can be hard to beat.

It hides deep down in the folds where stems join branches.

This problem should be sprayed with Malathon and white oil, take samples into your local nursery for identification.

Citrus trees are being invaded by stink bugs.

These brightly-coloured beetles do a fair amount of damage and treatment can be difficult.

I fi nd Malathon and white oil can be a good deterrent.

Now to care of living Christmas trees (not the cut varieties) that are growing in pots.

Please remember they need water, several times a week, and before decorating be sure to have a saucer under this living plant to make watering easy.

Once Christmas is over, don’t throw that living tree straight out into the full sun.

Give it a good water and ease it out from shade gradually into the sun.

Wrapping up 2021 – a year like no other Redhead has been named in the country’s top 10 highest growth suburbs for 2021.

The coastal Lake Macquarie village took out eighth spot on the list of Highest 12 Month Change in Values, after experiencing a 50.1% surge that saw its median house price jump to $1,431,937.

Newcastle’s The Hill made the statewide list, ranking ninth in the Top 10 Highest Median House Values list, its average home now $1,990,496.

The pair feature in CoreLogic’s Best of the Best Australia 2021 list.

The annual report provides a comprehensive suburb-level analysis of Australia’s best and worst performers including top sales, highest median values and strongest growth rates for the past 12 months.

CoreLogic head of research Eliza Owen says the 45-page compilation shows 2021 has been “an unprecedented year of growth and litany of outstanding results”.

The estimated value of Australia’s residential real estate leapt from $7.2 trillion at the end of November 2020, to reach a record

high of $9.4 trillion in just 12 months.

In addition, the report shows sales volumes climbed to an estimated 614,635 in the past 12 months, the highest level in almost 18 years.

“Strong housing market performance over the year was driven by multiple factors, including low interest rates, fiscal and institutional support for households, high household savings and relatively low levels of advertised stock,” Ms Owen said.

Extended lockdowns and increased remote working trends raised regional dwelling values up 25.2% in 2021.

Unit prices had their fair share of ups and downs in the Hunter region, with the suburb

of Newcastle sitting ninth in the top 10 highest median value list, with an average price of $877,082 after a record 229 were sold in 2021.

Muswellbrook and Scone both made the list of lowest median values, with Muswellbrook’s sold tally at 94 and average price of $238,122. Scone wasn’t far behind at number nine spot and $262,497 its median value.

Ironically both suburbs made the list of units with the highest rental yields, with Muswellbrook topping the list at $328/ week (up 7.2%) and Scone fetching $315/ week up 6.5%.

Singleton also made the list, taking out second spot with a unit yielding $355/week (up 6.6%).

My soul can be free and safe, and being able to feel the music and create art with movement is a true gift that I will hold onto tightly and cherish forever. I am a massive Dance Moms fan and recently a bucket list dream of mine came true. I still can’t believe it, but I took a zoom class with the one and only Miss Abby Lee Miller, and she did not disappoint! I had no idea what to expect, and it was perfectly perfect in every way. I know this sounds weird, but I was secretly hoping Miss Abby would yell at me… and she did!

Dancer

Ten-year-old Matthew is a student at Studi-O Dance school and has been honing his craft and, in turn, developing a deep love of the art of Ballet since he was four. Over the years Matthew has taken part in nearly 30 workshops, summer schools and masterclasses with world-renowned teachers and professional dancers, all of which has been pivotal in Matthew auditioning, and being offered a position in The Australian Ballet School’s International/Interstate Training Program. Matthew is just about to begin his second year of training at The Australian Ballet School, and feels grateful, humbled and honoured to be able to train and represent the school with pride. Matthew attributes his success to the guidance of his Ballet teacher Miss Karen Barker-Rogers, who encourages him to continually train hard and be himself. He is also the Beyond Dance NSW Junior Ambassador, proudly supporting Beyond Blue. Matthew’s role is to help raise awareness and much-needed funds to support those living with mental illness.

MONKEY I was at our local Australia Post Office a fair few years ago, and begged my Mum for a toy…as kids do…and I chose Monkey. I don’t know what it is about him, but I just feel so connected to Monkey, and he is never too far from my side.

IMPROVISATION There is nothing more freeing, than dancing like no one is watching, and I spend hours and hours at home, creating routines and have so much fun pretending to be in grand performances as both choreographer, and performer.
