Congratulations to all those candidates who prevailed in their respective NSW Local Government elections at the weekend. While the battle for the top spot remains in the balance at Port Stephens and Maitland, at the time of going to print, there were no real surprises in the showdowns at City of Newcastle and neighbouring City of Lake Macquarie. Both mayors, Nuatali Nelmes and Kay Fraser, are extremely popular. And, no matter what side of the political fence you sit on, each has done a wonderful job in recent times, especially guiding their LGAs through a global pandemic. It’s not an easy role. But, Cr Nelmes and Cr Fraser handle the position with aplomb. Cessnock looks likely to welcome newcomer Jay Suvaal following the retirement of Bob Pynsent, while Sue Moore seemed a certainty to retain her leadership crown in Singleton. One glaring point, however, was the dominance of Labor throughout the Hunter Valley. It has to be a worrying sign for the Liberals at state and national level. I guess we’ll see more of Dominic Perrottet and Scott Morrison in the region over the coming months. However, I doubt it will make any difference in this area. Until next week, keep smiling.

Nelmes, Fraser claim early wins in mayoral races The popularity of Nuatali Nelmes and Kay Fraser knows no bounds after both women claimed victory in their respective NSW Local Government elections at the weekend. With half of the 123,161 ballots counted, incumbent Newcastle Lord Mayor Nelmes (Labor) had surged into an unassailable position, securing 23,653 votes – or a whopping 40.9%. Independent John Church only mustered 16,096, or 27.9%, as of 10am on Tuesday 7 December. Then came daylight with The Greens’ John Mackenzie (8,794) and Liberal’s Jenny Barrie (6,296), followed by Independent Rod Holding and Socialist Alliance’s Steve O’Brien, who both failed to crack the 2,000 mark. Cr Nelmes, on retaining her role, was quick to praise her supporters. “[Saturday night’s] result has seen the people of Newcastle strongly support our positive and progressive policies to continue to deliver for our City,” she posted on Facebook. “Novocastrians have backed our vision for Newcastle and our approach to create and sustain

more local jobs while delivering the infrastructure upgrades our community deserves. “We’ve run a positive campaign on the back of sustainable and deliverable policies that will continue to drive our City forward. “I’m so thankful the people of Newcastle have once again given me their trust and support as their Lord Mayor. I won’t let you down, Newcastle.” Cr Fraser (Labor) enjoyed an even bigger margin in the City of Lake Macquarie showdown. The much-loved mayor collected more than 40,000 votes, or a massive 54.1%, way ahead of Liberal’s Jason Pauling (17,270 or 21.7%), Lake Mac Independents’ Luke Cubis (9,874 or 12.4%) and Independent Rosmairi Dawson (9,441 or 11.9%). An immediate outcome, however, is unlikely at Port Stephens. In one of the closest battles in the region, serving mayor Ryan Palmer (Independent) holds a narrow lead over Labor’s Leah Anderson. With 37,578 of the votes tallied, the former has picked up 18,078, or 50.2%, with the latter securing 17,941 or 49.8%.

That result may not be known until later in the week. It’s a similar situation at Maitland, which had seven people vying for the top job. The latest figures show challenger Philip Penfold (13,382 or 33.3%) slightly in front of mayor Loretta Baker (Labor), with 13,107 or 32.6%. Liberal’s Ben Mitchell is next best with 6,021 (15%), with the remaining candidates – John Brown (The Greens), Michael Cooper (Independent), Brian Burke (Independent) and Shariar (Sean) Saffari (Independent) – barely making a ripple. Labor’s Jay Suvaal appears likely to claim the reins from retiring Bob Pynsent at Cessnock. He collected 6,094 of the 15,269 votes counted – or 42.1%. Independent Ian Olsen also performed strongly, with 3,951 or 27.3%, while Liberal’s John Moores (2,646 or 18.3%) and The Greens’ Janet Murray (1,771 or 12.3%) could be proud of their efforts, too. At Singleton, sitting mayor Sue Moore (Independent) holds all the cards with 2,322 or 38.5%. - Rod Thompson

Ferry impressive service to launch on Lake Mac Travel around Lake Macquarie is about to become easier thanks to a new fast ferry service. Operators expect the route to shave almost 30 minutes off travel times between key points on either side of the lake. The 120-passenger vessel will transport people to and from the Lake Mac Carols at Speers Point

Park on Saturday 12 December as a soft launch, ahead of its normal timetable, which starts on 1 January. The ferry will operate on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, zig-zagging from existing jetties at Speers Point, Booragul, Toronto, Belmont and Wangi Wangi. Currently, it takes more than 40 minutes to drive from Belmont

to Wangi Wangi but the ferry is expected to transport passengers between the two stops in just 12-to15 minutes. The service is the brainchild of Peter Hanrahan, managing director of Lake Macquarie Cruises and Nova Cruises, and has the support of Lake Macquarie City Council. Mr Hanrahan said the vessel had been selected specifically for its new role after serving as a ferry in Queensland. “We started cruises on the lake in 2018 and, from that, we’ve just noticed the growing demand,” he said. “Attending tourism meetings, there is constant talk of a lack of connectivity, and with so much to do all around the lake we thought there was the opportunity for a quick link between all the sites.

“And, then with COVID, we’ve had this real boom in domestic travellers, particularly from Sydney, so I think it’s a great time to launch to capitalise on that influx that we’re all expecting.” The five stops were chosen because of what’s on offer within walking distance of each jetty. Warners Bay was considered but, unfortunately, the bay is too shallow to allow access for a public ferry. The service will initially run as a six-month trial, with plans to continue and possibly expand if demand meets expectations. One-way tickets between any two stops are $13 for adults, return tickets are $26 and an all-day hopon, hop-off pass is $30. Graham Batten has 8.5 million reasons to smile It’s not every day you hand over hundreds of thousands of dollars to deserving charities throughout the Hunter – and beyond. But, that’s exactly what Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation (NPCF) executive officer Graham Batten has done since 2016.

Now, after steering the ship through the rocky waters of COVID-19, he’s parting ways with the organisation for a bit of “rest and relaxation”. “It’s a bittersweet moment for me,” he said. “Especially, after five years and 153 projects that I’ve worked with in that time. “The total, as of this week, is $8.5 million. “However, it’s been an absolute privilege to work with the NPCF and have the chance to lead it. “We’ve experienced a huge amount of change in the regional landscape – and the foundation – over the past five years. “We have moved the NPCF from, possibly, a simpler model to something that anticipates community need and looks to

drive change in local communities as well. “We’ve assessed some amazing opportunities on the table. “That’s probably helped my decision to leave, too, when the team’s in such a good spot. “We boast a fantastic group of people – and had a succession plan in place – which made it easier for me to call it a day.” For Mr Batten, it has also produced some lasting memories. “The money is obviously a standout – it’s a big figure,” he said. “But, ultimately, it’s the outcomes that occur. “I think when you’re in a regional community seeing a project that happened because you were able to build a partnership with that group and understand

their needs, that’s a proud moment. “And, when you witness the responses of an organisation that may not have been able to get their idea off the ground – people who didn’t expect that support would be available to them – that makes you feel good, too.” With his final official function done and dusted, Mr Batten is looking forward to the next chapter, wherever that leads him. “My passion is regional Australia, which has made this job such a pleasure,” he said. “I intend to do some travel and see more of it with the family for a little while. “I firmly believe that now is the time for regional Australia. “And, I want to be a part of it.” - Rod Thompson

On-the-spot fines for Newy shopping trolley fails Supermarket operators could be hit with an on-the-spot fine of $660 for not collecting abandoned shopping trolleys following advocacy by the City of Newcastle. The penalty would be issued to any supermarket that fails to collect a shopping trolley from a public space within three hours of being notified it is causing an obstruction, or within seven days if it has just been left unattended in a public place such as a park, creek, car park or street. Following advocacy from the City of Newcastle, the NSW Government is proposing the tough new rules via its Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Bill 2021. Fines ranging from $660 to $13,750 would be applied to owners, depending on the nature, number and time the trolleys remained.

A Notice of Motion calling on the NSW Government to crack down on abandoned trolleys was unanimously supported by City of Newcastle councillors at the November 2020 council meeting. Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen welcomed the new legislation as a victory for the community and other local councils in NSW and, particularly, the environment. “Advocacy led by Local Government NSW and [council] raised concerns about the negative impact of abandoned shopping trolleys on community amenity, safety and the environment, and the costs to council associated with their removal and management,” Cr Clausen admitted recently. “The new legislation is a real improvement on existing laws that

in the past made compliance almost impossible to enforce. “The onus is now on trolley owners to ensure their property is not littered throughout our suburban streets and environment. “Major supermarkets and local shopping centre management will need to take a more proactive approach to managing their assets,

and preventing them from ending up in public places, on roads, or in creeks and waterways or face large fines. “I would like to thank the NSW Government for listening to City of Newcastle and working with Local Government NSW to address our concerns around abandoned trolleys.”

Much-loved educator Liz retires after 33 years When Liz Chiarentin closes the gate of Wallsend Community Preschool for the final time on Monday, she’ll be leaving her beloved workplace with more than 33 years of fond memories. Saying farewell to the learning space she first entered as a shy 23-year-old in 1988 will be no easy task though.

The mother-of-three, who has dedicated her entire working life to educating children aged three to five, says she’s expecting retirement to be awfully quiet. “I just love children’s voices,” Liz told Newcastle Weekly. “I love their stories, I love their smiles, and I love the sounds they make when they’re

playing. I will miss that.” Liz says she has seen many changes at the Douglas Street preschool during the past three decades, including her own fashion tastes. “I’ve seen children, their parents and their grandparents come through this preschool,” she said. “People bring in photos of their preschool days to show me, and there I am. My hairdos have changed a lot over the years, that’s for sure - I started in 1988 remember, so it was all big, frizzy hair back then.” But, it’s her empathy she hopes she’ll be most remembered for. “I feel very grateful that I have done what I wanted in my life,” she said. “I’m happy with what I’ve achieved. “I’d like to be remembered as someone who was accepting of all, and non-judgemental. “We work with a very diverse

range of people, and you have to have the skills to make everybody feel welcome. I’ve always wanted people to feel that I do that. “We all have tough days, and we need to look after each other and support each other. I hope my legacy is as a team-member. I think I’d be most proud of that.” And for the children, Liz hopes preschool will always be respected for its role as the final step before school. “Preschool is about teaching kids’ resilience to cope with everything that school will bring,” she explained. “It’s not necessarily about learning your ABCs. It’s more about them feeling confident in themselves to cope with that next step, those new challenges, those new social situations, and the new playgrounds. Community’s generosity ‘overwhelming’: Sheldon The organiser of the Calamity Annual Toy and Gift Drive is overwhelmed by the response to the 2021 campaign. Thousands of gifts – big and small, from sporting items to board games, adorn the garage of Todd Sheldon’s Bolwarra Heights home. But, he’s not complaining one bit. The sixth edition of the popular charity fundraiser exceeded all expectations, especially in the middle of a global pandemic. “The reaction was great,” Mr Sheldon said. “I have to admit, we were a little surprised due to COVID-19. “However, it’s been our goal to double [the goods] each year.” Following a request from Reading Cinemas in Maitland, in 2015, to assist those struggling during the festive season, Mr Sheldon, wife Penny and son Lachlan donated

wrapped presents to a Wishing Tree. From there, the idea of a yearly toy and gift drive was born. “It just grows and grows,” he said. “Since the inaugural appeal, in 2016, the donations have steadily increased. The toys and gifts are then provided to local charities and organisations, which have included Carrie’s Place, the Farmers Run and, most recently, Got Your Back Sista. “But, our main focus has always been families affected by domestic violence and this will always be very important. “In 2021, we’re broadening the assistance to include those affected by mental health. As well, we are keen to aid people who have stepped up to take care of children in the event mum and/or dad are unable to.” The success of the 2021 Calamity Annual Toy and Gift Drive caps off a

bittersweet period for Mr Sheldon. While thrilled by the result, he suffered a personal tragedy along the way, which will shape the event moving forward. “I had my mother [here] for almost three months, receiving end of life care,” he said.

“We then had to move her to hospice before her passing, on 28 October, which made things really tough. So, as of next year, the appeal will be known as the Nanny Susan Memorial Toy and Gift Drive in honour of my beloved mum.” - Rod Thompson

He volunteers more than 100 hours a year doing patrols,

helps out at nippers, and also volunteered with the Hunter surf lifesaving team that assisted with the Upper Hunter floods last month. He said his mum Melissa was a nipper and surf lifesaver and many of his family were involved in surf lifesaving. “Nippers is such an important program that needs community support and funding because it teaches kids surf safety,” Riley said. “It also is the training ground for future surf lifesavers who help keep everyone safe at the beach. “A nipper can advise an entire group about the safest way to use the surf. “One trained nipper or lifesaver has the ability to save many lives.” - Rod Thompson

Raising funds to help Amber Since being diagnosed with a rare type of brain cancer, Amber Hughes and her family have been changed forever. An inoperable tumour located on her brain stem means they are desperately trying to find available trials and treatment to slow the tumour growth. Lemon pesto capsicum star bread It’s time to start thinking about what you’ll serve this Christmas! This star bread will not only taste great but it’ll look good on your table, too. WITH TASTE EDITOR, ELIZABETH SYMINGTON

2 cups plain or bread flour ⅓ cup dairy-free milk, warm ⅓ cup vegan butter spread, room temperature 2 tbsp Birch & Waite Greek Lemon Dressing

3 tbsp Birch & Waite Greek Lemon Dressing 2 tbsp nutritional yeast (optional) ¼ cup sundried capsicum (or tomato), thinly sliced Salt and pepper, to taste

1 tbsp sugar

Glaze

2 tsp active dried yeast

2 tbsp Birch & Waite Greek Lemon Dressing

Filling 2 cups fresh basil

Add all the dough ingredients to a large bowl or stand mixer and mix until it comes together. Knead for 5-10 minutes or until the dough becomes soft, stretchy and comes away from the side of the bowl. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour and knead again. If the dough is dry, add a dash of milk and knead again. Allow the dough to rest in a bowl in a warm place for at least 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size. If it doesn’t double in size, place it in a warmer area of your home. Meanwhile, to make pesto filling, add all ingredients except the capsicum/tomato to a food processor. Pulse until it forms a smooth paste or add more olive oil if needed. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide the dough into 4 even sections. On a lightly floured surface, roll each dough section into a thin circle (about 20cm wide). Place one dough circle on a lined baking tray. Spread with one large tablespoon of pesto and sprinkle some sundried capsicum. Top with another dough circle and repeat until you have used up all the dough and have 3 layers of filling. Place a cookie cutter (about 4cm wide) in the middle. Around the cookie cutter, use a sharp knife to cut the dough into 16 segments. Twist the segments together to make the edges of the star bread. Cover the bread and allow to rest for about 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Brush the bread with the remaining glaze.

After 2020 forced them to change operations last year, the team is happy to be up and running as per normal again. “We had to close the kitchen

completely and sell off whatever stock we had left, so it had a huge impact on our operation,” Rev Pattenden said. “But, this year, we were able to get the kitchen back and hopefully we will do well.” With about 9,000 kilograms of puddings and products available, they hope the community shows their generous spirit and supports their cause. “I think we’ve sold more than half already,” Rev. Pattenden said. “We’ve diversified to include some more options like paleo, vegan and gluten-free puddings. “We’re also producing sauces and a range of chocolates infused with pudding. “You can have your chocolate and your pudding as well.”

For five decades now, the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen has been selling Christmas puddings that taste great and do good. How to care for insect eating plants Once the weather becomes warmer, I’m sure I am the most popular lady in town. No, not with the gentlemen, but children become so excited at this time of year if I am able to obtain stocks of insect eating plants. Twelve months is a long wait until propagation is achieved and the little faces light up – it happens also with enthusiasts who collect Drosera, Nepenthes and Dionaea. These plants aren’t for regular gardeners. They are quite specialist because of their unusual quality to catch flies and other insects. But, please read on as they are so interesting – and, they even catch spiders. Let me begin with Drosera. These unusual plants are found in poor acid boggy soils, mainly in Australia. They are frost tender and should be kept in glasshouses during the cold. Commonly known as Cape Sundew, they are insect eaters with sticky leaves – they require moist humid conditions – stand in a water tray and are

great for windowsills. They become dormant in winter as many insect eaters are prone to do. The Nepenthes is my favourite insect catcher. Merewether duo to lighten the load with ‘Laundrily’ When James Barratt and wife Teri Waite took over the reins of the family-owned laundromat in Merewether last year, they wanted to make it “sexier”. Barratt’s Laundry had been in James’ family for more than 40 years. The coin-operated laundromat on Llewelyn Street had seen little change since 1979, and James and Teri were keen to put their own stamp on it. Locked down and homeschooling their three children, the pair worked tirelessly on a business idea that would bring the most tedious of household tasks into the next decade. “We wanted to keep the business going but it is hard to make laundry sexy,” Teri says. Such was the creation of Laundrily – an app that allows its

user to have their dirty laundry collected, washed, dried, folded and returned within 24 hours. Laundrily, the duo claim, is “like Uber for your washing”. “With everyone so time-poor these days a service like this has been lacking in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie for some time,” James says. “Especially now that we’re out of lockdown, who has time or wants to be spending it washing their clothes?” Within a fortnight of its launch, James says the app had already attracted interest from a wide range of customers. “We thought this would be more appealing to a young person,” he says. “But it’s actually being snapped up by people of all ages.

Since marrying Santa and moving to the North Pole, Mrs Claus has devoted her life to helping Santa manage the workshop and care for the elves and reindeer. She says the weeks leading up to Christmas are the busiest time of the year but all the effort is worth it come Christmas night when Santa returns after his annual journey around the world and they relax over a ginger beer and a quiet meal by the fire.
