For the first time in months, my daughter and I ventured to Hoyts at Green Hills in Maitland to see the latest offering from Hollywood besties Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, The Last Duel.

Boy, wasn’t it great to head to the movies at the weekend?

To grab a bucket of popcorn, a choc top or two, and a couple of drinks made the experience feel almost normal again – apart from the mask-wearing before and after the screening.

But, it’s great to see businesses, big and small, reopening their doors following another stretch of lockdowns.

It was particularly encouraging to witness people return to the many eateries in the shopping centre, too.

While we’re probably still some way from normalcy, in the current COVID-19 climate, it’s a step in the right direction.

With the NSW Government’s fullyvaccinated targets being met at an increasing pace, it appears Christmas – and the subsequent summer break – could be a timely remedy for thousands of families in the Hunter Valley.

New autism-specific school to open in Newcastle A new autism-specific school is set to open its doors in Newcastle within the next few years.

Due to the growing needs of the community, Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) recently acquired Bupa Cardiff Heights to meet that demand.

With the city rising on average by 1.77% per year, and more than 5,500 children on the autism spectrum residing in the HunterNewcastle region according to the NDIS, more support and services for youngsters and their families/ carers is vital.

“Aspect has been operating schools in this area for over 40

years,” national director education Maryanne Gosling said.

“We currently have one main campus in Thornton, and seven satellite schools located within mainstream and Catholic institutions for approximately 200 children.

“With the escalating wait list, our hope is to continue to build additional partnerships with other schools as well, to help address the immediate needs of the community.”

Autism-specific education focuses on a child’s individual needs and interests, which is pleasing for parents such as Katie Cowey.

“Aspect teachers are amazing,” she said.

“They have the resources and skills to allow my son, Ryder, to communicate and express himself, which has been instrumental in his development and learning.”

As part of its strategic plan, Aspect is anticipating to invest $60 million in new and existing schools and classrooms across the state to create best-practice, autism-friendly spaces for students.

“With the growing population, the

community and parents/carers have told us there is a need to provide more autism-specific schools, so we’re extremely excited to have secured the former Bupa aged care facility in Cardiff Heights,” Ms Gosling said.

“The existing three-story building, and 6,542sqm of land situated at 6 Harrisons Lane, is an ideal location given its proximity to Newcastle and local area amenities.

“When open, it is projected the school will cater for approximately 50 to 60 students.

“Much work will need to be done to convert the building into a purpose-built school.

“Our class pupil numbers are purposefully small to cater for the needs of each individual student.

“So, the aesthetics and layout are carefully considered with that in mind.

“We’re currently working with our designers, architects and builders that have experience in developing autism-friendly schools.

“We are also engaging our autism and Autistic communities and the local community for feedback

during the process.

“Aspect has been blessed with strong community support in the Hunter-Newcastle region, who have sponsored everything from new building wings to employment programs.

“We hope to work with corporate and individual funders to assist in closing the gap for needed resources and ensure the longevity of our programs.”

Late last year, Aspect opened a purpose-built school in Loftus, south of Sydney, and recently completed a $3.6m expansion of its Treetop School in Adelaide, adding an additional four classrooms, indoor gymnasium, sensory-play area and commercial kitchen.

As a registered independent school, Aspect delivers the NSW curriculum while working to each student’s autism-related learning needs, individual strengths, interests and aspirations.

In total, the not-for-profit organisation provides education to 1,200 students through 67 locations.

Stockton Bridge celebrates Golden Jubilee milestone On 1 November in 1971, the Ross Wilson-led Daddy Cool was top of the charts with Eagle Rock, Australian films Walkabout and Wake in Fright were wowing international audiences, and NSW Premier Robert Askin opened Newcastle’s Stockton Bridge to traffic.

director north Anna Zycki said it was great to see the four-lane bridge was still going strong half a century later, providing a vital connection between Newcastle and Port Stephens.

“Before the NSW Government funded this 1,024-metre span over the Hunter River, vehicles would cross by ferry,” she explained.

Stockton Bridge will celebrate its 50th anniversary on 1 November.

“When it was completed, this was the longest bridge to be built by the then-Department of Main Roads, now Transport for NSW, and the second longest bridge in NSW after the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

“At a cost of $6.5 million in 1971, or about $76 million if it were built today, Stockton Bridge is a major transport route carrying 19,000 vehicles each day, about 1,000 of which are heavy vehicles.”

Ms Zycki said work to build the concrete arch bridge started in 1968 to meet the needs of increased traffic from rapid urban, industrial and tourist development in the area.

“The 30-span concrete bridge was designed to provide a 30-metre

clearance for shipping and has a central footway for pedestrians,” she added.

“The structure was formed from 23,000 cubic yards of concrete, together with 600 tonnes of high tensile steel and 2,500 tonnes of steel reinforcement.

“Transport for NSW recently completed major maintenance work on the bridge to ensure its structural integrity and continued safe operation, with most of the work carried out in a confined space within the bridge to minimise the impact to road users.”

While this sounds sensible, they may find themselves with very little interest from the bank and they may miss out on pension entitlements. It’s always worth checking the latest financial and legal information.”

For those who do take the plunge however, the common regret is “I wish I’d done it sooner”. David Kelly, agrees and adds that most residents find downsizing a liberating move – an opportu-

nity to make new friends, travel or embrace new and old pastimes.

Glendale to house new Farmers and Artisan Markets Glendale is set to be home to Lake Macquarie’s largest shade structure, offering undercover parking for 160 vehicles, and a weather-proof space for regular Farmers and Artisan Markets.

The $4 million, 4,300 square-metre structure will be the only covered space of its kind in the region.

Development approval for its build was received by its custodian Stockdale Glendale this week.

Centre manager Angela Vogt said it would provide many benefits for

customers who visit the site.

“We know this large shade structure will improve the shopping experience for our customers, and demonstrates that we’re listening and taking action to improve the centre in ways that our customers have indicated are most important to them,” she said.

NSW Farmers Markets operator Kevin Eade agreed.

“Featuring local farmers, boutique wine producers, food artisans with gourmet delicacies,

Mr Eade has been operating markets since 1999, trialling his first event at the Historical River Port of Morpeth.

For Grandma Bees market stall owner Barbara Elkins the space means a new home to sell locally sourced and produced seasonal food options.

“With Grandma Bees, I’m trying to build a very local, seasonal food culture, where we make the best use of whatever we have available at that time of year,” she said.

“We’re really looking forward to meeting new people and having them fall in love with all our great products.”

The Farmers and Artisan Markets will initially be home to approximately 60 market stalls, and will run every Saturday in the first year of operation.

In year two, the markets will run every Wednesday and Saturday, with the capacity to grow to 150 stalls.

Construction of the structure is expected to be completed in April 2022, with a break in works from November to January.

One more summer splash before vital upgrade With the warm weather upon us, and summer fast approaching, Novocastrians are being urged to take advantage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths while they can.

City of Newcastle councillors voted this week to award the facilities’ upgrade contract with the site to close early next year.

So, the Newcastle Ocean Baths are scheduled to be “off limits” during the necessary works.

Six companies submitted tenders for Stage 1, which were assessed against a range of criteria as well as a recommended construction program that would limit disruption and impact on baths users.

Novocastrians are being urged to take advantage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths while they can.

Council is committed to funding the renewal of the Newcastle Ocean Baths in full and will direct the $9.5 million recovered from the sale of the Frederick Ash Building to the project.

Stage 1 also received $3 million from the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said having the Newcastle Ocean Baths open through the upcoming holiday period would allow locals and returning tourists to enjoy the iconic pools with COVID-19 restrictions lifted.

“Newcastle Ocean Baths turns 100 next year, so this upgrade is wellneeded,” she explained.

“Starting construction after this coming summer means locals who have been staying home and visitors itching to get back to Newcastle can

enjoy the space over the holidays.

“But, the enhancements to the Newcastle Ocean Baths’ pools, lower promenades and pumping system is significant.

“And, unfortunately, it means that shutting after this coming summer it’s expected construction will continue through to autumn 2023.”

City of Newcastle acting director of infrastructure and property Joanne Rigby said the preferred tenderer was determined after a thorough process involving an independent external probity advisor.

“The tenderer has significant experience in large construction projects and their response to the tender demonstrated a thorough understanding of the construction requirements,” she stated.

Innovative Newcastle students eye off the future Improving accessibility for people, dealing with plastic, planning for an ageing community, and preparing for a creative economy.

They were just some of the issues explored by high school students last week in a first-of-its-kind learning experience, designed to create a sustainable future for Newcastle.

Together, the bright young minds tackled the first two topics of the City of Newcastle Sustainnovation Challenge.

The initiative – created by local company MCB Business Partner – is a community capacity building project delivered under council’s NewSkills and Living Lab programs.

The students pondered and discussed subjects such as “How can our community benefit from being a smart and accessible city?” and “How does a smart city deal with plastic?”.

Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said council was supportive of the project and the opportunity it presented for young people.

“We’re committed to leading the way in smarter living and creating a sustainable global future for the next generation,” he explained.

“The goal of the Sustainnovation Challenge is to empower the pupils to embrace a new way of thinking .”

Mentored by specialists students were guided through applied innovation, system engineering and other analysis and development tools and principles.

Program director Duncan Burck said ideas showing the greatest smart city potential would progress to council’s Living Lab accelerator program to be possibly implemented.

“Applied innovation is a systematic process of creating ideas to improve or make something work better,” he stated.

“The more we listen to and encourage our young people to share their perspectives, the better the ideas and future decisions we’ll be able to make as a whole community.”

Newcastle author gets the royal treatment Newcastle children’s author Emily S Smith has received royal recognition after The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, read her latest book on her popular YouTube channel.

On Tuesday 19 October How To Hug A Cactus featured on Storytime with Fergie and Friends, a web series in which the Duchess reads children’s stories, often with a heartfelt message or lesson for her young audience.

The Duchess has about 30,000 subscribers to her quirky show and attracts over 100,000 views for some of her children’s book readings, making the opportunity quite an achievement for Smith.

“I’m absolutely over the moon that How to Hug a Cactus was selected to be a ‘royal read,’ because so many people view Fergie’s Story Time videos,” Smith said.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for my book to be shared on that scale.”

Joining other high profile children’s authors, including Celeste Barber and Matt Cosgrove, who have also been hand-picked and promoted by the Duchess, Smith says she was blown away by the opportunity.

“I was so excited when I found out that my book was chosen,” she said.

“I couldn’t believe it. I think I had to read the email a couple of times before it actually sank in.”

How To Hug A Cactus, published

by Larrikin House uses rhyming verse to follow a young girl’s often disastrous attempts to hug her favourite cactus.

Filled with humorous moments and ridiculous scenarios, it also promotes the importance of persistence, and continuing to try in the face of failure.

Smith is no stranger to global exposure, the early childhood educator had her first picture book Garbage Guts translated into Korean for the South Korean market.

Garbage Guts was also included in a recent project by the Hunter Writers Centre which saw local authors have their picture books translated into Auslan for storytelling videos.

It’s a been a busy year for Smith, despite the pandemic, with her next children’s book Kora Kerplunk’s Travelling Tongue due for release in February 2022.

“As cliché as it sounds, it really is a dream come true to get my story out there. I just feel so grateful to have these opportunities,” she said.

Allira Jaques: What’s next for our Boolaroo beauty She was the little girl who loved to perform for her family.

If there was any chance of putting on a choreographed show for the tight-knit group, Allira Jaques would take the stage.

But, as she hit her teens, the

beauty from Boolaroo with a classic girl-next-door appeal, became shy.

“I was always putting on a play, I’d always wanted to be an actress, but I suddenly became nervous,” she said.

“I’d hit that awkward teenage stage and I didn’t have the confidence to just go for it.”

The thought of her mum seeing her kissing a stranger on film was also unbearable she admits.

So, she turned her attention to a different stage.

“I did a lot of modelling competitions, I’d enter myself,” Allira explained.

“I did it to boost my selfesteem, and even though the industry wasn’t for me, it taught me some confidence.”

In fact, Allira shone in the

spotlight, shortlisted for the Miss Universe crown in 2007, and taking home honours as Miss Surfest in 2004, when she was 19.

She completed her teaching degree at University of Newcastle in 2009, but her thirst for acting took precedence.

And, soon after, she took her first steps into film, playing a role in Daddy’s Little Girl (2012), Come and Get Me (2011) and Charlie’s Farm (2015), all locally produced, independent horror films.

“I do love my horror films.

They’re really fun to film. I love the adrenaline rush,” Allira said.

In stark contrast, it is romantic comedies that really appeal to 35-year-old.

“I’m a major Friends fan.

Imagine if we made an Aussie version of Friends – that’d be

fantastic. I’d love to be in that,” she told the Newcastle Weekly.

“Rom-coms are something I really love.

“I love anything by Meg Ryan, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Anniston, Emily Blunt, Elizabeth Moss – they’re some of my favourites.”

Allira Jaques is fast-becoming a star in her own right.

After a life-changing phone call from director Eric C Nash, she auditioned for Love You Like That, while in Los Angeles in 2019.

Released on 24 October, it is already receiving rave reviews.

And what’s next for the Lake Macquarie export?

“I’d love to be in a Marvel movie,” she said.

“I’d love to be a girl kicking some butt. I’d love to do that.”

Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie welcomes new craft Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie has welcomed a new piece of equipment ahead of what it believes will be its biggest season yet.

The Swansea Heads-based group of rescue volunteers took ownership of the Sea-Doo GTX-170 Rescue Watercraft, or jet ski, on Monday 18 October.

The 170hp vehicle was courtesy of a grant received from the office of Shortland Federal MP Pat Conroy.

It is the group’s second jet ski.

With a top speed of 90km/hr, Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie unit commander Malcolm Druce says it will help ensure a swift response in any emergency.

“In addition to their excellent manoeuvrability and ability to operate in shallow water and on turbulent coastal bars, the RWC is a great piece of equipment to have

when conducting rescues in large swells, such as we see on a regular basis,” Mr Druce said.

“You may recall last year we performed an assist on the Swansea Bar after two young anglers found themselves in the water after their fishing boat was swamped by a wave.

“They were fast getting washed out to sea when we dispatched our jet ski from Pelican to help stabilise the situation.

“With a second jet ski we’ll have the opportunity to respond faster and have additional search and rescue capabilities with them working in tandem.”

The RWC has been kitted out in new livery and comes with an improved towline for use in rescues.

The vehicle has also been fitted with an Automatic Identification System (AIS), enabling better

tracking capabilities.

“It has emergency flashing red and blue lights to help it stand out and its electronics will help us see exactly where it is from base, which is a first,” he added.

Mr Druce says now that the rescue group has two RWCs in its equipment inventory, it hopes to have both manned every weekend and public holiday over the peak period.

“We provide a monitoring service covering Lake Macquarie and its immediate coastline out to 30 NM at sea,” he said.

“We need to have updated equipment.

“And now we’re heading into what I think will be our busiest season ever.

“So this new jet ski couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie welcomed a new Sea-Doo GTX-170 rescue water craft last Monday, ahead of what its unit commander expects will be a record-breaking season.

Festival, competition to reel in amateur anglers Amateur anglers in Lake Macquarie have the chance to reel in more than $33,000 worth of prizes next month.

It’s all thanks to the annual Let’s Fish Lake Mac competition which will kick off on Saturday 13 November.

Participants are permitted to fish between 6am and 7pm on the Saturday and from 6am to 3pm the day after (14 November).

Entrants need to catch, photograph and release prize specimens caught in the lake and along the City’s coastline to be in the running for a prize.

Packs worth up to $1,000 are on offer across senior and junior categories covering four target fish species: bream, flathead, tailor and whiting.

Competition Event Director Michael Guest, from Reel Action TV, said Lake Macquarie was the perfect place to get stuck into some seriously good fishing.

“Let’s Fish Lake Mac is a tremendous initiative by Lake Macquarie City Council and I’m keen to see serious anglers, families and mates all fishing for $33,000 in prizes over the weekend,” he said.

“Entry is $20 per person, with

all participants in the running to win one of eight prize packs valued at a total of $7,000.”

Anglers will receive a ‘brag mat’ on which to place their catch, showing its size. They will also receive a unique code word activated for the weekend to ensure the photographs they enter were taken only during the event period.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing photos from the competition,” Mr Guest said.

“Lake Macquarie is in such great shape and it’s the perfect time of year to wet a line.”

Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley added the Let’s Fish Lake Mac competition was being expanded this year to include a festival at Rathmines.

It is set be a fun day out for the whole family, featuring expert fishing tips from some of Australia’s leading anglers, live music all day, 20 plus food trucks, fishing-themed stalls, science and magic shows, roving performers, children’s programs, an art exhibition and more.

Big season ahead for Cessnock district cricketers “Let’s get onto the paddock” is the simple message from Cessnock District Cricket Association (CDCA) secretary Mark Bercini.

With community sport finally receiving the “green light”, it’s now all systems go for the CDCA, who will start its season on Saturday 30 October.

And, five clubs – champions Greta/Branxton, Wine Country, Piranhas, Mulbring and Bellbird – are vying for the honours in the Ross Smith Shield.

“I think everyone’s excited and can’t wait for the first ball to be bowled,” Bercini said.

“With the CDCA, we’re going to play a full round – five weeks – kicking off in the top grade at the end of the month.

“Then seconds and fourths will begin on 6 November.

“However, due to the lack of double vax rates, we’ve decided to hold off the thirds until 4 December.

“Singleton District Cricket Association (SDCA) is also starting that same weekend.

“Then we’ll combine with them for the Coalfields Cup.” Bercini admitted there would be plenty of action in the middle between now and April.

“Cessnock players will contest a full round in the CDCA, before joining with SDCA for the Coalfields Cup,” he said.

“Ten sides – Greta/Branxton, Mulbring, Piranhas, Valley, Glendon, Creeks, Wine Country, PCH, JPC and Bellbird – are scheduled to play nine fixtures in that tournament; one game against everyone.

“There’ll be four matches before Christmas, we’ll return on 22 January and complete the remaining showdowns.

“The plan is to stage a six-team semi-final format this season.

“It’s something a bit different but it keeps those sides in the bottom half of the table in the comp a little longer.

“We’re really looking forward to it.

“When the Coalfields Cup wraps up, CDCA will host a grand final for the top two Cessnock teams.

“That’ll be for the Ross Smith Shield.

“Hopefully, if COVID-19 subsides and we can return to normal, we’ll conduct two rounds of the Coalfields Cup the following season.”

In 2021/22, the CDCA will boast a total of 23 sides – five each in firsts and seconds, six in thirds and seven in fourths.

It’s a drop of two teams from the past 12 months.

He is one of just four music teachers from around Australia to be nominated for the 2021 Telstra ARIA Music Teacher Award.

If he wins, the Lambton High School teacher says it’ll be a win, not just for himself and his school, but for the whole of Newcastle.

His name is Daniel Wilson and he is the Creative and Performing Arts teacher and assistant principal at the Womboin Road education hub.

He is also the only NSW candidate in the nationwide Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) competition.

And, on 24 November he’ll learn if he is one of the best music teachers in the country.

“Yeah, that’s pretty exciting I have to be honest. I just turn up for work every day and do something I love doing. This is like a massive wild ride on top of that.”

The humble educator is one of a record-number of entrants in this year’s competition. His nomination was delivered virtually by former student and country music singer Morgan Evans.

“Morgan’s doing phenomenal things at the moment,” Mr Wilson said.

“He’s playing in front of tens of thousands of people in his concerts, so to see him pop up on the screen was amazing.”

Mr Wilson is also the musical director of Star Struck, a NSW Department of Education annual performing arts event for school students in Newcastle, the Hunter and Central Coast.

The initiative has produced local musical identities such as Kirsty Lee Akers and Michelle Davidson.

His role within the musical production platform developed from vocal director to assistant director,

until in 2008 he took over as music director.

The former Kotara High School student admits he’s committed much of his spare time in the past 21 years to the voluntary role.

“This music education program is done outside school hours,” he said.

“Some people think that’s madness, but we’ve got an amazing team and we love what we do.”

In 2022 Star Struck will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The show, Mr Wilson reveals, will be called Iconic.

So, what is it that this teacher of 21 years hopes will be his legacy?

“I hope I’ll be remembered for making a difference,” he told Newcastle Weekly.

“It’s lovely when students tell you that you made a difference in their lives. It’s not what I set about doing, but when they come back the year after they’ve graduated or five, or ten years down the track, and they say ‘you made a real difference to me’, and they thank you for what you did, I think that’s amazing.”

The 2021 Telstra ARIA Music Teacher Award, Mr Wilson adds, highlights the need for support within the music education sector.

“Telstra and The Song Room are looking to shine the light on music education in Australia. They’re looking for inspiring people who are doing amazing things in the realm of music education because behind every great ARIA artist, is probably a music teacher,” he said.

“It’s great that everyone’s getting behind it. Now we just need everyone in Newcastle to vote.”

Kurri Kurri to host junior state cycling championships In a major coup for the region, the newly-formed Newcastle Hunter Cycling Club (NHCC) will host the 2021 AusCycling Junior Road State Championships at Hunter Economic Zone (HEZ) Kurri Kurri next month.

After a couple of false starts, due to COVID-19 and subsequent NSW Health restrictions, the prestigious event is now scheduled for Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 November.

Not only are NHCC members Travis, Corinne and Rhys Erby thrilled to be kitting up for their first-ever major meeting, president Justin Rose is equally ecstatic.

He’s worked behind the scenes to ensure it’s all systems go for the local organisation.

“Previously, we’d committed to hosting the junior championships on 30-31 October,” Rose said.

“That was based on the NSW Government’s advice at the time that community sport and travel between Greater Sydney and regional NSW would restart after 80% of the adult population was fully-vaccinated.

“However, we encountered a slight obstacle. The government announced regional travel would not begin until 1 November, even though the vaccination milestone had been reached. That decision forced AusCycling and NHCC to reschedule the Junior Road State Championships by one week.”

The Tamworth Track Open (previously scheduled for 6 November), however, has been cancelled.

AusCycling is now exploring alternative dates for the Junior Criterium and Scratch Race State Championships.

“The regional travel delay is a setback, but thanks to the support of NHCC we’re delighted that it will only add one more week to the wait for junior racing,” AusCycling NSW & ACT event manager James Nguyen said.

“We want to thank all of the riders and parents for supporting

the club by entering early.

“More than 90 riders have already entered – and we’re excited to see them all back at racing soon.”

Rose admitted there were many benefits to having the event in the Hunter.

“This is our first state cycling meeting to be held since lockdown,” he said.

“The NHCC nominated to host this event, to give the children something to look forward to.

“Although these races are competitive, it is always a very social weekend, with the kids from all over the state reuniting.

“Furthermore, it is a great economy booster for the region, with accommodation, food and fuel needed by participants and their families.

“Even more special is the fact it’s NHCC’s inaugural state event since merging earlier this year.

“Newcastle Hunter Cycling Club was formed with the aim of one united and strong organisation within the region.

“We comprise of past members from Hunter District Cycling Club, Newcastle Cycling Club and Hunter Valley Masters Cycling Club.

“Our goal is to provide local racing and training in a fun, inclusive environment for all ages, while promoting and encouraging the sport of cycling.”

The 2021 AusCycling Junior Road State Championships will include the road, time trial and criterium disciplines for the under7s to under-17s.

“Our club is expecting its biggest contingent for many years,” Rose said.

“We’re excited that several younger riders will make their debuts, Corinne, Travis and Rhys Erby from Luskintyre, Caleb Ashpole and Joshua Crawford.

“On top of that, seasoned campaigners such as Anderson Dell, Jake Pajtl and Oliver Richards will be

keen to produce strong performances, too. The event is also a selection hitout for the NSW team (U15 and U17) to compete at the National Junior Road Championships in Shepparton in November.

“Caitlin Rose and Hayley Dell will be hoping to make the squad in the under-15 women’s, along with Jake

Pajtl (under-15s), Noah Mason of East Maitland and Matthew Drohand in the under-17 men’s and Phoenix Jullian in the under-17 women’s.”

Existing entries for the Junior Road State Championships will automatically carry over to the new date.

Newy’s famous Castanet Club captured on film It was described as “twelve people playing tennis, all of them serving at once”.

It boasted comedy greats like Mikey Robins, Glenn Butcher, Maynard, Steve Abbott, Warren Coleman, Johnny Goodman, Angela Moore, John Doyle, Stephen Clarke, and Therese Kenyon.

And, it was all born right here in Newcastle.

The Castanet Club features in the latest Stories of Our Town film.

The Castanet Club is the subject of Glenn Dormand’s latest instalment of the Stories of Our Town series.

The 26-minute film is the seventh in a series created by former TV personality Chit Chat von Loopin Stab and Tony Whittaker of Carnivore Films.

The colourful collection documents the group’s irreverent mix of comedy, theatre, music and dance.

“To witness a concert was to be bombarded with joy,” Dormand says.

“This joy started an hour before the show and stopped you getting to sleep hours after the show finished.

“It was more than a band, more than a club it was an ethos, an art movement, a theatre movement, a fashion movement, and a musical uprising.

“In the golden age of Pub

Rock, while INXS, Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil toured their biggest albums, this group of local artists, actors and musicians formed what was essentially an old school vaudeville troupe and started packing the Workers Club, The Palais, The Cambridge, The 16 Footers and every other beer barn in Newcastle and eventually Sydney.”

Dormand says what this group achieved in their nine years together would impact the landscape of Australian entertainment for the next 20 years.

“The rise of Triple J, Sandman and Flacco, Young Einstein, Good News Week, Channel [V], Play School, Sale of the Century, Full Frontal, Happy Feet, Roy and HG, Fast Forward, The Fat, Kath and Kim, and even Mambo T-shirts are in some way connected to this

remarkable group of humans,” Dormand says.

His first contact with the group, he admits, was while underage drinking at 15.

“For me Newcastle in the 80s was grey and sooty,” he says.

“Stepping into that club was like stepping through a portal to 50’s Vegas, 60’s London, a school fete and all the television of my childhood.

“It was fluorescent, dark, witty, theatrical, generous, and joyously daggy.

“I proudly admit that the vision I had for my band Machine Gun Fellatio was 100% ripped off from The Castanet ethos, with just a little more nudity added.”

Is Halloween a thing in Australia? Boo knows? It certainly provides an excuse to celebrate and entertain (within health restrictions) as lockdown comes to an end. Put the treat in trick-or-treat for your guests with these recipes.

Makes 20

1 tsp ground cinnamon

125g unsalted butter, softened

1/2 tsp ground cloves

1/2 cup brown sugar

Royal icing

1/2 cup golden syrup

2 cups icing sugar

1 egg yolk

1 tsp lemon juice

2 1/2 cups plain flour

1 egg white

1 tsp bi-carb soda

Brown/black, orange, and yellow food colouring

2 tsp ground ginger

Pre-heat oven to 180°C. Line 2 oven trays with baking paper.

Beat butter, sugar and golden syrup in a bowl with an electric mixer until pale and creamy.

Add egg yolk and beat until just combined. Sift flour, bi-carb, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves into mixture. Use a wooden spoon to combine.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth.

Roll out dough to approximately 5mm thick. Using a gingerbread biscuit cutter, cut out shapes and place on prepared trays.

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from oven and cool.

Royal icing: Sift icing sugar into a small bowl. Add lemon juice and egg white to form a firm paste.

Divide the icing into 3 small bowls. Add 1 drop of food colouring to each bowl to make brown/black, orange, and yellow icing.

Using a piping bag fitted with a 1mm nozzle, pipe the eyes, teeth and buttons onto your gingerbread vampires. Enjoy!

1/4 cup CSR caster sugar 3/4 cup cream

6 plain chocolate biscuits, roughly crushed

20g butter

Plain biscuits/shortbreads or wafers, for headstone

2 eggs, separated

Place chocolate and butter in a large heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Stir regularly until melted and smooth. Allow to cool slightly then mix in egg yolks.

Place egg whites into a mixing bowl and beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar until all is incorporated and mixture is thick and glossy.

Place cream into a mixing bowl and beat until firm peaks have formed. Gradually fold egg white mixture into chocolate mix using a large metal spoon.

Then fold in whipped cream mixing gently until well combined.

When violets stop flowering, try these 10 hints that require just a little common-sense and care (perhaps that is my problem).

1. Good light: About 40 centimetres from a window, but not in direct sunshine. Northeasterly is a good position.

2. Keep turning the plant so it gets light from both sides.

3. Fresh air but not in a draught. Open the window during a calm moist day.

4. Water carefully. The best method is to use a wick, one end into the base of a pot, then the other into a dish of water below the container.

The garden variety of plant, which can also be an enigma, are the very pretty fuchsias; sadly, these lovely plants will often grow in sun or shade.

The flowering period for fuchsias can last from June through to December.

At the end of this period, your fuchsia will be short on nitrogen and perhaps looking a bit bedraggled.

This lack of nitrogen causes a semi-dormancy period, which is the plant’s way of counteracting our hot summers.

During this hibernation period, fuchsias aren’t growing a great deal and they should only be watered sparingly.

By April, the weather is becoming cooler and less humid when fuchsias are ready to grow again.

Off-market selling is ‘not so secret’, says agent No styling, no advertising, no open homes, no stress – real estate agents say selling a home off-market is no longer just a trade secret.

Growing in popularity during what is shaping up to be a recordbreaking year for the industry, off-market is a term many may still grapple with.

Stone Real Estate agency principal David Tanchevski says offmarket needn’t be a term sellers are hesitant about.

“Off-market selling is a phrase used to define a property that is selling, or has already been sold, without any public advertising,” he says.

“It’s an alternative to selling by auction, private treaty or expression of interest.

“Contrary to the adage woven into the very fabric of the real estate industry – you can, in fact, sell a secret.”

Based in Merewether, with industry sales experience that stretches throughout the Hunter, Mr Tanchevski says selling off24

market can present benefits for both home sellers and buyers.

“Traditionally, selling a home involves a marketing strategy aimed at driving maximum public exposure and therefore maximum profit,” he says.

“As we continue to navigate COVID-19 restrictions, in particular rules around open homes, the option to sell off-market gives vendors (sellers) the opportunity to capitalise on the ever-buoyant property market regardless of lockdown measures.

“Record low interest rates and even lower stock, compounded by pent-up buyer demand, have combined to make off-market sales increasingly appealing for vendors and buyers alike,” he says.

The success of an off-market sale does rely heavily on an agent boasting an extensive database of potential buyers “Partnering with a trusted agent with an extensive network of high intent, finance approved buyers is the key to off-market success,” Mr

Tanchevski told Newcastle Weekly.

“It is critical for vendors to choose a reputable agent with a track record of recent sales within the local area, as selling the property will inevitably hinge on leveraging the agents’ database of prospective buyers.”

The benefits to selling this way, he says, are quicker sales with less fuss.

“It gives vendors the opportunity to sell quickly and avoid a long sales cycle,” he explained.

“An off-market sale means vendors don’t have to wait for all of the marketing materials such as professional photography and signboards, nor do vendors have to wait for the marketing campaign to scale exposure prior to hosting numerous open homes.

“With off-market sales, the property sale moves quickly without the hassle of a drawn-out marketing campaign or the headache of regular open for inspections.”

An off-market sale is also a strategic move for vendors looking

to reduce costs.

“Vendors selling off-market will avoid the need to spend money on added expenses such as styling as buyers seeking off-market properties don’t expect to be wowed by wall-to-wall style,” Mr Tanchevski says.

“Rather, they’re more likely to be interested in the property because it fits their search criteria whether that be based on location, floor-plan or potential.”

Privacy might also be a factor.

“Another huge draw card with selling off-market is anonymity,” Mr Tanchevski adds.

“For high profile vendors or those who simply value privacy it’s the perfect way to complete a property transaction behind closed doors.

FAMILY I am forever grateful for my family. They have done everything to support me along the way. I try and get back home as much as I can to see my parents, Nan and sister. My girlfriend Courtney is also my rock and high school sweetheart who I’ve been with for the past 10 years.

SPORT Ask anyone who knows me, I’m a sport tragic. It’s always been cricket in summer and rugby league in the winter. I also grew up travelling to speedway tracks to watch and eventually commentate my dad racing. A crazy amount of my days are spent watching sport.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS I may have only been a month old when the Knights won the competition in ‘97 but I like to say I remember it like it was yesterday.

I grew up wanting to be Andrew Johns like most kids. I remember sitting in my bedroom in Gilgandra crying when I heard Craig Hamilton commentate Joey was knocked out by Sonny Bill in what was his last ever game.

NBN News Sport Reporter and Presenter Born and raised in the small town of Gilgandra in Central West NSW, Adam’s childhood was all about creating his own fun, playing sport and sometimes travelling 100km to do so. He moved to Bathurst to study after finishing high school, knowing he wanted to do something in the media. His first job was a video journalist in Dubbo before moving to Port Macquarie and joining NBN News. Before long, Adam (pictured with NBN icon Mike Rabbitt) was in Newcastle with his dream job at 24. “Having the chance to report and present local news and sport is incredible,” he said. “I’m so glad to now call the Hunter home, I recently purchased my first house with my partner Courtney.”

HUGO This boy is the cutest in the world. I’m his fur-dad and I wouldn’t change a thing. He’s always got a smile on his face and wagging his tail like crazy every time he sees me.
