You could hear the collective “sigh”, and possible cheers, as Hunter parents celebrated the return of their children to school this week. Years 1, 12 and Kindergarten made their way back to the classrooms, while the other grades resume in less than a handful of days. For many mums, dads and guardians, home-schooling has been extremely tough. It becomes even more so when you throw your regular job workload into the mix, too. But, how much has it impacted our youngsters? While I’m sure thousands embraced the idea of staying in their pjs during the day, treating it like a bit of a holiday, there were hundreds of kids who also struggled with the concept. Many of them missed the face-toface interaction with their friends, the daily routine and the opportunity to ask teachers direct questions during online studies. And, you certainly have to feel for those pupils, readying themselves for their all-important end of year exams. So, the mental health and wellbeing of students should be the NSW Government’s number one priority as we search for some normalcy again. Let’s hope newly-minted Premier Dominic Perrottet has a plan in place. Until next week, keep smiling.

Welcome back: Cafe staff embrace customers’ return After a couple of months of having an empty dining space, The Autumn Rooms in Newcastle was ecstatic to welcome customers through its doors again last Monday. In line with the roadmap to exiting lockdown, the Cooks Hill venue reopened on 11 October for

operating was a long time coming. “As far as community support goes it has been amazing during lockdown,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “It probably went on for about a month too long, we started to get itchy feet by the end of it. “It is just really nice to be back open and have people in the cafe which is what we do best.” When it comes to the double vaccination requirement, Ben says they’ve had no trouble yet. “I guess the only thing is people getting used to it,” he said. “And where it is saved and how to get it up is a little bit time consuming but other than that everybody has been totally accepting and really supportive of it. “I think they just want to be back out in the community, it’s been a

good experience so far.” For four years now The Autumn Rooms has been operating from its Darby Street address and Ben says the pandemic has been one of the strangest periods the business has gone through. “I have been in hospitality for 20 years and it’s definitely been one of the most challenging periods for sure,” he explained. “Our goal was to make sure we kept our staff but that’s expensive, so more government support would have been awesome but we’re still here and we’re excited to be open. “I just encourage everyone to get out and support local businesses and respect the government legislation.” For more information about COVID-19 restrictions, go to nsw. gov.au/covid-19/stay-safe/rules - Elizabeth Symington

Partnership supports children and their families Not-for-profit employment and training services provider VERTO and Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern NSW (RMHC NNSW) recently united to support seriously-ill or injured children and their families at a time when they need it most.

New cancer treatment machine arrives at Maitland Cancer patients in Maitland and the Hunter will soon be able to access the latest radiation therapy technology and techniques closer to home. It’s all thanks to the arrival of a world-class treatment machine at GenesisCare’s new integrated cancer centre in Maitland. The clinic, set to open at the end of this year, will provide patients with access to radiation therapy, medical

oncology, sophisticated imaging, pathology and allied health services in one custom-built space. It’ll also offer a highly-advanced linear accelerator, the Elekta Versa HD, capable of delivering the latest treatment techniques, including Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). Associate Professor Peter O’Brien said the delivery and installation of the state-of-the-art technology was a key milestone in the opening of the new cancer centre. “We’re committed to ensuring all cancer patients can receive access to the latest treatments and technology,” he explained. “The advanced linear accelerator we have just installed in Maitland will allow many patients to receive their care locally, including stereotactic radiation therapy, which involves delivering a high dose of radiation therapy typically in three-to-five treatments, destroying cancer cells while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissues. “Many of our patients juggle treatment with full-time work or family duties, so the combination of local access and the latest technology

will reduce the impact of treatment on their daily lives.” The linear accelerator will also provide an important additional treatment to surgery for patients with advanced or complex non-melanoma skin cancer, including basal cell carcinomas (CCC) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). “Building the bunker was an incredible challenge during the peak of the Delta outbreak, coordinating multiple subcontractors, suppliers and project stakeholders to ensure we were able to remain on schedule,” said Karl Mayoh, director of Erilyan, who built the bunker which will house the new technology. “From the outset of this project, we wanted to ensure as many of the sub-contractors were locals so we could support the local economy.” - Rod Thompson

Awards to showcase region’s best residential gardens Lockdown presented many challenges, some good and others bad, throughout the Hunter in recent months. But, one of the upsides resulted in more residents tending to their yards while bound at home. Now, with Spring in full bloom, local “green thumbs” are being given

the chance to showcase their “pride and joy” for the opportunity to claim the title of Newcastle’s best garden in the newly-launched Newcastle Garden Awards. The concept is the brainchild of Michael Edwards. “The idea grew from my role in the property industry, where not only are we exposed to stunning homes but, equally, beautiful gardens,” he said. “There didn’t seem to be a platform to feature the many spectacular gardens across the Newcastle region or the hard work, passion and dedication that is put in by their owners.” After a brief conversation regarding the notion – and agreeing that there had long been lacking a chance for gardens across the area to shine, local garden guru Judy Sharpe accepted a role as judge for the

Newcastle Garden Awards. “I’m delighted to have Judy on board,” Mr Edwards said. “She’s certainly a popular figure within the readership of the Newcastle Weekly. Judy will be joined on the judging panel by another industry stalwart in Brian Bird. “So, we’re eagerly awaiting the first-time entrants. I’m hoping the event becomes an annual fixture on the local calendar, too.” The inaugural awards will provide a showcase for all different types of gardens with four categories: Best Small Garden, Best Small Spaces Garden, Best Large Garden and People’s Choice. “The judges will look at all aspects of the garden plant selection, hard landscaping and careful maintenance,” Mr Edwards said. “The small spaces category

Donations keep rolling in for wheelchair sports “Sport should be accessible to everybody.” That’s the sentiment from local Paralympian Christie Dawes, who is an ambassador for Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT’s latest initiative. During the final days of October, Dawes, alongside the charity, is encouraging everyone to go “rolling”, in a novel way, to assist people with disabilities. “Roll On October runs until 31 October and we challenge you to roll as far as you can to raise money for wheelchair sports,” Dawes said. “It doesn’t matter if you are on a bike, if you’re on skates, a unicycle, a wheelchair, a racing chair or a hand cycle the choice is yours just get involved and start rolling.” Participants are asked to collect donations and raise awareness while challenging themselves to

cover as many kilometres as they can – on wheels. Dawes believes it will allow more people to take part in sport. “Cost is one of the biggest barriers for people living with disability,” she said. “You might have all the will, determination and fitness in the world but, for example, if you can’t afford the $6,000 quad rugby chair to play to get you through to the next level then it makes life really hard and that’s not fair.” Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT’s Sport Coordinator for Northern NSW Matthew Haines says they are grateful for any donations. “Roll On October is our first major fundraising initiative in over a decade,” he said. “It is vital to raise funds for our athletes and to create opportunities

for them to participate in sport. “We’re really thrilled and grateful for all donations, we have currently raised over $55,000 which is amazing. “The cost to compete or play in any kind of entry level wheelchair sport can be very expensive. “The difference you’ll make in their lives by helping give them the opportunity to participate is unbelievable.” Several Novocastrians have taken on the challenge including Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes. “I am going to give [Roll On October] a try but my choice of wheeled apparatus will be a bike because I think it’s probably a lot safer for me to be on a bike rather than a skateboard,” she said with a laugh. Albanese, Fitzgibbon throw support behind new Hunter candidate There’s much work to be done between now and the next federal election. But, two experienced Labor campaigners feel Dan Repacholi is the right man to retain the seat of Hunter following sitting member Joel Fitzgibbon’s surprise retirement announcement last month. After more than 25 years in the role, the long-serving MP will bid Parliament farewell in 2022. However, he and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese were quick to extol the virtues of his potential replacement, Australian Olympian and one of Cessnock’s favourite sons, Mr Repacholi. The duo officially launched the latter’s campaign, delayed until now due to COVID-19 restrictions, at the beautiful Toronto Foreshore on Thursday 14 October. “It’s a great day for me – to welcome Albo (Albanese) back to the Hunter electorate and, of course, to be standing up publicly for the first time with Labor’s candidate for my seat, Dan (Repacholi),” Mr Fitzgibbon said. “He’ll do an amazing job. “I’m very confident Dan will retain Hunter for the ALP (Australian Labor Party). “That allowed me to walk away knowing Labor is in safe hands –

and we’re well-placed to hold that seat.” The Labor frontman is also certain the party will form government because “Australia needs us”. “Joel recognises that, too,” Mr Albanese said. “And, I want to thank him for his contribution over such a long period of time to the great cause of Labor. “The fact is we changed this local community in those two short terms we were in office. “Look at the Hunter Expressway; the Howard government talked about it a lot but didn’t do anything. “It took a federal Labor team to deliver that $1.7 billion project – the largest ever federal investment in the Hunter. “It created jobs, making an enormous difference to this region, and I’d like to make sure we can continue to achieve such positive results in this beautiful community of the Hunter. “And, in Dan [Repacholi], we have a candidate who will carry on that legacy. “He’ll join the other fine members in this area, such as Sharon Claydon, Pat Conroy and Meryl Swanson, in representing the interests of people here in the Hunter.” - Rod Thompson

Tributes flow for Newcastle sporting icon Paul Burke The Waratah-Mayfield District Cricket Club (WMDCC) – and the greater Hunter community – is in mourning following the passing of sporting icon Paul Burke at the weekend. The man affectionately known

as “Burkey” not only cut a fine figure on the Newcastle pitches during an illustrious playing career, he was well-known in local rugby circles, too, thanks to his association with The Waratahs. Born in Waratah at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, he was the third son of Cyril and Marg of Woodstock Street, Mayfield. He attended Waratah Infants School located on Turton Road from 1966 through to 1968 and then onto Waratah Public School from 1969 to 1972. In his last year there, Burke was school captain alongside Tracey Williams (dec). “Paul was always a very levelheaded individual,” his long-time friend Ian Liddell said. “And, in his role of captain in 1972, it was clearly visible that

leadership was inside his DNA. “He went on to Newcastle Boys High in 1973 and was in the last years’ intake of selected students. “He enjoyed many sporting representative honours including selection in the NSW Schoolboys Cricket XI and NSW Schoolboys Rugby, as well as the Australian Schoolboys in 1978. “As such, Paul finished his schooling in 1978 and then went on to the Newcastle College of Advanced Education to study physical education.” While there, Burke met Sussan Cotterill who was also studying at the same campus. They got married on 29 December 1984, in the Christmas break, so he did not have to miss a match. Burke’s time at WMDCC started brightly, winning the Bert Gibson/Alf Morris Trophy for best under-23 player in 1975/76. He then made his first-grade debut in the 1976/77 season as a 16-year-old. All up, he took the field on 314 occasions (14th all-time WMDCC), scoring 4.965 runs (17th all-time WMDCC) and capturing 661 wickets (seventh all-time WMDCC). Club president Josh Brackenbury led the tributes. “Paul earned the respect of the entire Newcastle cricketing community – both as a talented all-rounder in his playing days, and as an administrator and leader later in life,” he said. “He had Waratah in his blood, following his father Cyril into our playing ranks. “His dad, perhaps more famous for his 91 caps as a Wallaby, was also a keen cricketer and played first-grade for WMDCC in the 1950s.” Brackenbury said Burke’s

overall contribution to Waratah cricket and rugby off the field was perhaps even greater. “Paul continued building a WMDCC legacy, first taking office as president for the 1991/92 season, before being made a Life Member in 1993,” he explained. “In 2010, he returned to the Waratah committee to assist in what was a tough time for the club. He took office as president that season and remained there until 2019 when he had to step back from the role due to his illness. “On a personal note, Burkey was a friend, a fundamentally kind man and fantastic role model for myself during the past decade and I will miss him greatly. “I know I speak for all members of the Waratah family when I express our deepest condolences to the Burke family – wife Sue, children Jono, Kristen and Melissa, and his three brothers Bruce, Ross and Colin.” The Waratahs leader Alex Robson was also quick to praise Burke, who died at the age of 60. “Paul had a distinguished playing and coaching career with the club and most likely would have gained high senior representative honours had he not suffered a serious knee injury in his early senior playing years,” he said. “He played 198 games for The Waratahs and was the club’s inaugural club captain in 1981 before being appointed again in 1982. “His passing will impact many members and supporters of The Waratahs Rugby Club, the cricket club and the Lake Macquarie Rugby Club where he had a stint as coach.” Go to newcastleweekly.com.au for the full story. - Rod Thompson

Allira Jaques to steal hearts in Aussie film Love You Like That If you don’t know the name Allira Jaques by now, chances are you soon will. After the release of her new movie Love You Like That on Thursday, you might just find yourself singing her praises. And when you learn that the 35-year-old actress is from the Hunter region, I’m guessing you’ll be flooded with a sense of kinship with her. Born and raised in Boolaroo, Jaques is set to make her mark on the Australian film industry this week, when her character graces screens across the country in a film by debut writer and director Eric C. Nash. Boasting a cast that includes Descendants actor Mitchell Hope, Wolf Creek’s John Jarratt, Chris Haywood and Aboriginal comedian Steph Tisdell, Jaques is expected to wow Event Cinemas audiences with her talent. Love You Like That is set in the fictional coastal town of Seafront Sands. The Aussie rom-com begins when a young woman (Jaques) is washed up naked on the shores of Mim Beach appearing to know nothing but her birth date. Struck down with what appears to be amnesia, the mysterious beauty soon sets tongues wagging. “[She] turns the sleepy town into a tailspin,” producers tell us. “Is she a mermaid, why does she have amnesia, [and] what is going on with her craving for coffee?”. The tight-knit township takes to calling her ‘Mim’ after the beach on which she was found. With an inexplicable ability to cast a spell on the locals, Jaques then continues to have a profound effect on everyone she comes into contact with, including the hard-

Her cupid’s arrow doesn’t stop there, mesmerising handsome dating agency boss Harrison (Hope), who’s sassy assistant Emily (Tisdell) brings the regular laughs to the M-rated film. “I won’t tell you too much,” Jaques says. “But the film has lots of twists and turns, and there are a lot of funny moments as well.” During the course of one eventful day, Jaques’ character causes change to everyone’s lives forever. But it is not until the final scenes that it all ties up. The film has been touted as “a nostalgic movie which is sure to delight audiences in the tradition of Australian hits like Strictly Ballroom and Muriel’s Wedding”. For Jaques it has become a dream role, one she landed while in Los Angeles. “They didn’t give me the ending of the script when I auditioned,” she said. “I made up something in my head and they liked what I did, then they told me the ending and I did another take. “Once I got to see a few of the plot twists I thought ‘Oh I love this’ and I knew I really wanted this role. “She was fun to play, and the role meant I got to come home.” Love You Like That was filmed in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire in October 2019, taking just six weeks to complete. Nikisha’s top of class with new single While her fellow students undertook lessons at home, Morisset High School’s Nikisha Priest also spent her lockdown putting the finishing touches on her first single. Now, the 15-year-old is proud to release Where We Were. The Year 10 pupil worked with some leading music industry producers and session musicians to record her debut, which she hopes will resonate with everyone who’s been impacted by COVID-19. “I think this song is really relatable – we can all connect with it in some way,” Nikisha said. “When I was writing it, I was thinking about how we are missing the things that we know, the places and the people that we love. “Everyone wants to go back to the way we were before COVID-19, and we are feeling a little lost and

uncertain about the future. “Music is a great way to work through feelings. “So, I hope my single helps people feel a sense of connection.” Nikisha recorded Where We Were under the mentorship of producer Simon Johnson and with the support of session musicians, former Dragon drummer Pete Drummond, and country artist Liam Kennedy-Clark. “Even the recording was impacted by COVID-19, with Pete recording the drums over Zoom and the other musicians not being able to come to the studio because of lockdowns in the different states,” Nikisha said. “So, we had to find other ways to work together. “It was not the usual experience, but it was a really great example of the wonderful things that can be done even when we can’t be together.

Line a 24 cm cake tin or 11 x 27 x 9 cm loaf tin with baking paper (it will mould to the tin better if you scrunch it up well first, then spread it out to line the tin). Combine half of the honey and 2.5 tbsp of the cream in a small saucepan and cook on high until the mixture smells super caramelly (almost burnt), about 4 minutes. Pour immediately into a room-temperature bowl to cool. Half-fill a medium saucepan with water and bring to a gentle simmer over low heat. Place the egg yolks and remaining honey in a medium metal bowl that will sit securely on top of the saucepan without touching the water.

An eggy dessert: Burnt honey semifreddo with seasonal fruits 1/2 tsp of vanilla bean powder

Serves 10-12

1/4 tsp of grated or ground nutmeg Cake

Topping

3/4 cup (185 ml) of local honey

2 cups (300 g) of pitted cherries or your favorite seasonal fruits, chopped

600 ml of organic thin (pouring) cream or coconut cream 8 organic pasture-raised egg yolks 2 organic pasture-raised eggs

Fresh berries and local edible flowers in season, to serve Grated or ground nutmeg, to serve

Place the bowl over the simmering water and beat with hand-held electric beaters until the mixture is pale, creamy, and frothy. Remove the bowl from the saucepan and set aside. Pour the remaining cream into a deep medium bowl and beat until thickened but not too stiff. Gently fold the cream and the cooled burnt honey mixture into the beaten egg mixture. Everything should now be in one bowl. Pour into the prepared tin, then cover and freeze for 3 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, remove the semifreddo from the freezer, take out of the tin by pulling on the paper, then remove the paper and place the semifreddo on a plate or cake stand. Don’t panic if the paper sticks. Just wait a couple of minutes for the semifreddo to soften, and it will peel off super easily. Scatter the fruit and edible flowers over the top and sprinkle with nutmeg. Hot Tip: When cherries are out of season, try finely diced pear, sautéed in a pan with a little butter and vanilla bean powder, then cooled to room temperature. Things to remember when planting trees As home gardens become smaller, particularly in the city and suburban areas, space for large trees is shrinking. If a tree grows 10 metres high, it should be planted 10 metres from the house. This can be limiting as a broad defi nition between trees and shrubs is about three to four metres in height. Generally, shrubs are lower than three metres growing from the bottom and not developing a trunk. During storms you will notice that eucalypts (gums) aren’t a wise choice for small gardens. They’re great for large gardens and acreages but need to be considered carefully even then. Some years ago, I had a three-acre garden, which was covered in gums. I respected the engineer’s advice… when my home was being constructed that during dry weather, they survived by seeking water even under the house. There are some points to remember when

planting trees. Always research the mature height and width before purchasing and try to visualise what the tree will look like when it is fullygrown, where will the shadow fall and will it interfere with power lines. Look at some disasters in local government street planting, when electricity companies cut such awful shapes into beautiful trees. When planting a new tree, the soil needs to be well-drained. Although trees need lots of moisture, their roots shouldn’t be standing in stagnant water. The planting hole should be wide enough to allow the roots to spread out – about twice as much as the root mass when planted. Before the tree is planted, place a sturdy stake in the hole beforehand as driving it in after may cause damage to the root system. There are some smaller growing native trees that are ideal for suburban gardens – for example, wattles, banksias, and NSW
