Newcastle, and the greater Hunter, has always prided itself on being a strong sporting heartland. In recent times, we’ve hosted major events involving the world’s best surfers, rugby union and Supercars, to name just a few. The Knights kept us entertained throughout a COVID-impacted winter, reaching the play-offs for the second consecutive season. And, while they bowed out disappointingly, their combined effort bodes well for the future, especially with the appointment of Garth Brennan as the NRL club’s new head of pathways. But, now, it is time for the beloved Jets to soar to the top again. After a number of lean years in the A-League competition, the organisation’s gearing up for a return to its glory days. Highly-respected manager Arthur Papas has been charged to guide the team’s fortunes on the field, Port of Newcastle recently inked a threeyear deal as a major partner, and fans are rejoicing the powers-that-be will bring back the dominant “gold” in its playing strip. It’s a move widely applauded by all.

Port’s biggest supporter eyes off A-League success The Newcastle Jets are hoping to enter another “golden” era in the A-League, with a new manager, major partner and playing strip steering the club into 2021/22. And, that’s music to the ears of PoN’s staunchest Jets fan, George Soufaris. “I’ve been a supporter since day one and remember fondly their glory seasons playing in gold,” he said. “I reckon I’ll be among the first to order the new jumper – and wear it at the Port and around Newcastle. “I’m ecstatic they’re returning to the iconic gold jersey and it’s even more special that the Port of Newcastle’s logo is on the front of it.” Mr Soufaris and his nephew, Frankie, featured in the Jets and PoN’s jumper reveal hype video alongside players in the latest kit and a specially-made gold football. “You could say I’m the biggest supporter at Port of Newcastle,” he said.

“But, there might be a few people who would argue that because we have a lot of employees who are really keen on football. “It’s just so exciting for PoN to be backing the Jets. It is a great feeling; there is a really big buzz about it across the Port and I just can’t wait until the season kicks off. “The fans are really excited about the gold coming back as well. “It was on our first jersey. And, we won the grand final in gold in 2008. “Port of Newcastle being a golden Port and having a golden logo, well it’s the perfect match really.” Mr Soufaris admitted football was “in my blood”. “It is a shared experience of triumphs and disappointments that bonds people together through a love of the game,” he said. - Rod Thompson

Get Ready, RFS warns ahead of bushfire season “Don’t be complacent, even though we have had some cooler weather lately and some rain, the bushfire danger period starts right across NSW on 1 October.” That’s the message from RFS Manager Community Risk for the Hunter Area Command Paul Best. He wants people to be prepared for anything.

“The Bureau [of Meteorology] has forecast a wetter than average spring so it will result in good grass growth,” he said. “We’ve already started to see that growth occurring in western parts of the area and that’ll bring an increased grass fuel load throughout the bushfire season. “We don’t expect it to be as terrible

as the 2019/20 season but there are still a lot of parts of the state, and a lot of places in the Hunter, that didn’t burn in the 19/20 season so we will be keeping a close eye on that.” While the RFS has conducted its Get Ready Weekend – an initiative that encourages people to start preparing for the fire season – Superintendent Best says it’s never too late to get started. “It’s just taking some simple steps to greatly improve your house’s circumstance in the event of a bushfire,” he explained. “It’s simple things like removing flammable material from your yard, cleaning your gutters, having a hose that reaches all parts of your home and most importantly having a conversation about vital decisions. “If you are going to leave, where will you go?

“And if you are going to stay, make sure you are well prepared to stay and defend your home.” He adds being prepared is one of the best things you can do to help the RFS through the season. While COVID-19 continues to spread in the Hunter, Superintendent Best says it will not impact their ability to respond to emergencies. “We’ve had some very robust COVID-19 planning supplied by RFS HQ and NSW Health and we’re following the Public Health Order,” he said. “It has impacted all of our lives, but it hasn’t impacted our ability to carry out important hazard reduction burns and respond to emergencies in our communities.” For more information, go to rfs.nsw.gov.au - Elizabeth Symington

Progress on the fifth section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass - between Rankin Park and Jesmond - has taken a step forward.

Tenders called for $450m fifth section of Newcastle Inner City Bypass project Tenders for the $450 million fifth section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass – between Rankin Park and Jesmond – have now been called. Transport for NSW sought registrations of interest in early 2021, with John Holland Pty Ltd; Fulton Hogan Construction Pty Ltd; and NEWLink – BMD Constructions Pty Ltd and Ditchfield Contracting Pty Ltd Joint Venture making the shortlist. The process will remain open for 12 weeks until Friday 17 December. Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said the Australian Government had devoted $360 million to build the section of road, as part of its record $110 billion 10-year infrastructure pipeline. “We’re committed to busting congestion and reducing travel times through this multi-milliondollar investment in the Newcastle Inner City Bypass,” the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development explained. “Once the bypass is complete, commuters will enjoy up to an 80% reduction in travel times during the morning and afternoon peaks, bypassing 11 sets of traffic lights between Rankin Park and Jesmond.” NSW Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said the state government had pledged $90

million towards the project, which is expected to create up to 900 jobs during major works. “The Newcastle Inner City Bypass has been designed to remove up to 30,000 vehicles each day from Lookout Road, Croudace Street and Newcastle Road,” he stated. “So, it will truly return local roads to local residents. “Utility relocation is continuing at the southern end of the bypass route, with the early works expected to be completed by July 2022.” Senator for NSW Hollie Hughes said the bypass was an important congestion-busting project for one of the busiest roads in the region. “I welcome the federal government’s continued commitment alongside the NSW Government to bring this development to fruition,” she added. Transport for NSW is working closely with NSW Health to ensure the project aligns with work on the John Hunter Health Innovation Precinct. The tender for Rankin Park to Jesmond is expected to be awarded early next year, with construction starting in the second half of 2022. The bypass is scheduled to open to traffic in 2025. - Rod Thompson

The sacrifices are worth it, says loving daughter When the Hunter’s Marie Sams was faced with a hard decision last year, she didn’t think twice about it. It was August and her family had just received the earth-shattering news that their mum Lucia had Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer. It was then that Marie and her sister volunteered to be her carers. “I didn’t think there was any other choice,” Marie said. “It’s been an honour to be there for my mum, I wouldn’t have it any other way.” While Lucia’s diagnosis changed their lives forever, it came with some lucky news – the cancer was operable. She had surgery in February and is now making her way through a round of chemotherapy. “To protect mum from the pandemic before her surgery we removed our children from childcare,

and we stopped seeing friends,” Marie said. “But these were all sacrifices we were willing to make to ensure mum had the best chance of getting better.” The 34-year-old added they are now on a lifelong journey. “It’s been one year, and we are very grateful that it is longer than six months,” she said. “Only three out of 10 people survive one year after diagnosis. “We’ve realised the little things matter, we take each day as it comes and tell each other we love each other whenever we can.” Aside from seeing her mum face the insidious disease, Marie said one of the hardest parts has been protecting her from the pandemic and trying to maintain the other roles in her life. “I have a husband and a daughter

and trying to juggle that with shift work and caring for mum is hard,” the ICU nurse said. “It has been a bit of an adjustment and we’ve all had to deal with the shock and grief of her having this terrible cancer. “It was and continues to be stressful ensuring we stay on top of appointments and act swiftly when things go wrong so I’m directly in touch with mum’s oncology team and it’s sometimes hard to balance along with the rest of daily life.” While Marie has the support of her family, friends and faith, some carers are not as lucky. So, to help people through a loved one’s journey with pancreatic cancer, PanKind, a foundation dedicated to the disease, is partnering with the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute to trial a new service.

Making a difference in the fight against COVID-19 “In years to come, as a profession, we’re going to look back on this pandemic and know we contributed in a positive way.” That’s the uplifting sentiment of Newcastle pharmacist Gabrielle Davern, whose hard-working team at Amcal Waratah Village has gone “above and beyond” to supply COVID-19 vaccinations in the community. In an attempt to provide specialised healthcare, under any circumstance, the staff extended its business hours to offer before and after-hour inoculations, walk-in jabs and even employed someone to transport free deliveries to locals in lockdown. Over the past month or so, the pharmacy has administered 700 vaccinations as part of the national roll-out. It’s an impressive number, which highlights Amcal Waratah’s dedication to assist those in need.

“As pharmacists, and service providers, it’s our obligation,” Ms Davern said. “If we’re not going to do it, and make it accessible for the community, then who is? “It is hard enough to see a doctor, let alone book an appointment to obtain a vaccine. “The Belmont hub is just crazy; no-one can get in. “The general public, by that I mean everyday people living locally, were experiencing extreme difficulty to access this essential vaccine. “So, what better way to do it than just walk into your local pharmacy – and get it? “It really was a no-brainer for us.” Ms Davern admitted the Amcal Waratah employees jumped at the chance to lend a hand, too. “It was my business partner’s (Wanho Noh) idea to open up on a day before and after regular hours – additional times – to service the

residents,” she told the Newcastle Weekly. “That would allow us to cater for shift workers, or those going on their morning walk, or returning home from work late at night. “We’d vaccinate them to suit their individual agendas. “The reaction’s been really positive. “For example, the university [of Newcastle] is quite close here, so when they had that outbreak, it was on the eve of us receiving the vaccine. “So, we put up a post on social media – and people shared it. “They were the first to take up the vaccine; all these uni students and 20-year-olds. “Residents have been quite thankful that we’ve provided the service so efficiently and conveniently. “It meant they didn’t have to

drive out to Belmont, which is almost 40 minutes from here. “Don’t get me wrong, appointments are good. “However, I think the fact it was a ‘walk-in’ and accessible – vaccinating in the moment, as I call it – helped lift the rate in the area as well.” But, Ms Davern’s final words were directed towards her selfless personnel. “I’m just very proud of the team – nothing was too much for them,” she said. “We’ve had to pull together really quickly our work-flow and adapt to new systems. “Programs we’ve never used before and booking tools to try and get it [this initiative] off the ground in a short space of time. “It’s terrific to feel as though we’re part of the solution of getting out of this [pandemic].” - Rod Thompson

After weeks of online research and conversations with her GP, Mrs Sarich has booked her son Liam for his first jab early next month. “I’m doing this because I feel it’s the only way to get him back to school, and sport, and his friends,” she said. Liam will soon join the 20% of 12-to-15-year-olds in NSW who have had one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to date. More than 1,800 pharmacies across Australia have received Moderna doses, with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian urging all parents to consider getting their children

vaccinated in time for the staggered reopening of schools from 25 October. People who turn 12 during the COVID-19 vaccine rollout will be able to get vaccinated if they meet criteria for vaccination at that time.

When the state’s race to vaccinate welcomed 12-to-15-year-olds on 13 September, Floraville mother-oftwo Yvonne Sarich says COVID-19 suddenly became personal. Having had her own two jabs without issue, the part-time admin assistant was looking forward to increased freedoms and an escape from lockdown when NSW Health announced teenagers were next in line. Despite being keen to see a return to the classroom for her 11 and 13-year-old, Mrs Sarich admits she was nervous about effects the vaccine might have on her children. “It was an easy decision when it was for myself and my husband but I hadn’t thought about whether or not I’d have the kids vaccinated,” she said. unmatched skillset and knowledge of the system he will oversee. Over the years, the Knights have been heavily criticised for bypassing its huge talent pool in the region, despite recent signings such as Brodie Jones and Brayden Musgrove, in favour of out-of-town personnel. But, that could all change, according to Maitland Pickers president Frank Lawler. “It’s a great appointment by Newcastle,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “Garth will give the young local footballers every opportunity to play for the Knights. “I think it’s awesome to have a Newcastle born and bred mentor, who has coached in the club’s pathways [system] before. “As well as the experience he’s

gained at Penrith and the Gold Coast. “One thing about Garth, in the next 12 to 18 months, he’ll know every junior running around Newcastle.” A former NRL head coach, Brennan spent 12 seasons in the Knights’ development system, holding coaching roles in the Harold Matthews, Jersey Flegg, NYC and NSW Cup teams from 2003-2015. The appointment will allow the 49-year-old to oversee all elite pathways, from the grassroots all the way up to both the NRL and NRLW sides. “I can’t wait to get involved and I’m really keen for the challenge this role presents,” he explained. “The club at the moment is filled with quality people, including

Adam O’Brien, Danny Buderus, Alex McKinnon and head of performance Hayden Knowles. “The chance to work alongside them is one I just couldn’t refuse. “For my entire career I’ve been really passionate about strengthening junior development and pathways programs, which has been some of the most enjoyable and rewarding work of my life so far. “Newcastle is my home. “And, I want every young player in the region to see a direct opportunity and pathway to play for their hometown club. “I firmly believe in building from within and that representing your hometown in front of friends and family is incredibly meaningful for these local juniors.” - Rod Thompson

Cardiff Hawks mentor up for coach of year title The Cardiff Hawks wouldn’t swap respected women’s mentor Liam Gibson for anyone in the AFL Hunter Central Coast (AFLHCC) community. And, it’s also probably why he’s been nominated for the BHP Community Coach of the Year award, an Australia-wide competition that acknowledges the “best in the business”. While Gibson faces an impressive array of contenders for the national title, which will be announced on 15 October, his club is backing him all the way. “We’re extremely proud of the effort Liam has put in and the results he’s achieved, not only on the park but through initiatives such as his Leadership Program,” vice-president Callan Buchan said. “Both of our women’s teams

finished minor premiers, in their respective divisions, in 2021 before the season was suspended. “This year, there were more than 40 players at every training session and the standard of play from all of them increased significantly. “As to his Leadership Program, it identified existing management strengths within the Hawks, and utilised these as an asset to teach, role model and promote the skills among the women’s team. “Eight members participated. “And, the success of the initiative led to its expansion to include six players of the women’s reserve grade side. “The aim of it was to foster and develop strength-based leadership skills, that could be shared among key team roles and developed in a nurturing environment.”

Gibson joined the Hawks as an energetic 12-year-old in 1995. He then enjoyed a highlysuccessful senior vocation, donning the Cardiff jumper on more than 300 occasions and spending a decade in the representative arena. He captained the rep side for four years, before turning his attention to coaching. “Liam brings extensive experience, knowledge, passion and leadership to the role,” Buchan said. “Also, he has a desire to guide and nurture the next generation. “He began his [coaching] career with the Sydney Swans Academy, helping to develop some of the game’s biggest stars. “In 2019, Liam hung up his boots and formally started as an assistant for the Hawks women’s team.

“He had an immediate positive impact and, when the head coaching position became available, he was eager to pursue the opportunity.” - Rod Thompson

Theatre company ready to play after lockdown 64-year-old company. “We’ve lost over $40,000 in box office because we had to abandon a very successful run of a play called Steel Magnolias and we have had to reschedule a play called Barefoot in the Park,” she said. “We are missing it – creatives exist to create that is our lifeblood, our rationale. “We want to be there rehearsing, selling tickets, meeting with patrons, and performing.”

Nestled in the heart of Lambton a theatre is patiently waiting for the return of its patrons. Thanks to COVID-19, Newcastle Theatre Company had to call the curtain on a few of its major productions as the city entered lockdown. It’s left the building empty, with performers and members eagerly awaiting the chance to return. President Claire Williams says it’s had a devastating impact on the

While they are receiving support from the government, which is helping them to cover the majority of costs, Williams says if the lockdown continues for too much longer, they may struggle next year. “We are very grateful for the funding support provided by the NSW Government’s JobSaver program,” she said. “But if [the lockdown continues] it means that by early next year we will not have any money in the bank, we will have to take money from our business overdraft. “It is really disappointing because we have been working so hard to get our company in a good financial position and before the lockdown, we were in the best situation ever.” However, Williams is confident that when they reopen next month, they will be able to move forward.

“We are looking to reopen with a production of Love Letters in late October,” Williams said. “The cast of our November show – A Hit and Miss Christmas – have also been busy rehearsing by Zoom under the leadership of young director Pearl Nunn. “This is a very funny new play written by Emma Wood, a Newcastle playwright who recently moved to Melbourne.” As one of the state’s largest community theatre companies, Williams says they are incredibly grateful for the support they receive from Novocastrians. “People have been so supportive and understanding,” she said. “Theatre is so exciting, and it is so much fun, we can’t wait to welcome audiences back.” - Elizabeth Symington

Strawberry, Almond & Lemon Myrtle Syrup Cake Makes 1 x 24cm cake 2/3 cup coconut oil, melted

3 eggs, room temp 1 ½ tsp 1mm ground lemon myrtle leaves 1 ¼ cup coconut yoghurt 1 ½ cups plain flour, sifted 2/3 cup (almond meal)

2 punnets of strawberries, green stem removed

Mango White Chocolate Lamingtons

1/2 cup caster sugar

Serves: 24

Place wire rack on shelf 2 and preheat oven on Circotherm to 180˚c

Preheat an oven to 180C and grease and line the base of a 24cm springform cake tin with baking paper.

Grease and line a 30cm x 20cm lamington pan.

Cut half the strawberries in half for the cake and set aside.

Combine eggs, sugar and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Using a balloon whisk, mix together until well combined and mixture is creamy.

Cut the other half of the strawberries into quarters for the topping and syrup. Set aside.

Prep: 1 hour Cooking: 35 minutes Note: this recipe uses the Neff Kitchen CircoTherm Oven from Appliances Online, but can be made using a standard appliance.

1 tbsp 6mm cut dried lemon myrtle leaves 2/3 cup water Extra coconut yoghurt to serve

Add the cream and whisk again until thoroughly combined.

In a mixing bowl whisk together the coconut oil, sugar and 1 tsp of the ground lemon myrtle, until the sugar is dissolved then whisk through the yoghurt.

Sift the flour over the mixture and fold gently to form a smooth batter. Fold in the mango.

Add the flour, almond meal, baking powder and eggs, and mix to just combine.

Pour the mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until cake is cooked when tested with a skewer.

Spoon half the cake batter into the cake tin and push half of the halved strawberries into the cake mix, spoon over the remaining batter to cover and press the remaining halved strawberries over the top

Allow to cool then cut cake into 24 pieces.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes.

Make the icing by placing the milk and chocolate in a saucepan over a low heat or induction level 3 and cook stirring occasionally until chocolate has melted. Sift the icing sugar into a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Pour in the chocolate mixture and mix until smooth making sure there are no lumps of icing sugar.

For the syrup, in a small pot combine the ingredients with 4 of the quartered strawberries and place over a low heat to infuse and cook for 10 minutes then let sit for 10 more minutes and strain off and keep warm.

Coat the cake pieces in the white chocolate icing then toss in toasted coconut.

To serve, mix the quartered strawberries with the 2 tbsp of syrup and the remaining ½ tsp ground lemon myrtle.

5 cups icing sugar

Note: Coconut can be toasted in a large frying pan over a low to medium heat, stirring regularly.

Spoon these over the cake and serve with yoghurt if desired.

I’m so lucky that my sport and lifestyle takes me all over the world and, to be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t change this for anything. I love new cultural experiences, meeting new people, seeing new places, and I love trying local foods. Travel really gives me a sense just how small we are in this big amazing world.

HOME Nords Wharf in Lake Macquarie has always been home for me, and I will forever call it home. After a busy year of travel, it’s always so refreshing to return home to the slow pace and beautiful scenery.

Rhiannan Iffland

Growing up my Pop used to call me his ‘Water Baby’. Since I can remember I have always loved the beach and the ocean. As a young girl it was a place where we spent time with family and friends and now, to this day, being in or by the ocean is therapeutic and simply makes me really happy.

Rhiannan ‘Rhi’ Iffland began diving at Lambton pool at the age of nine and, before that, she was an avid acrobatic trampolinist. She also trained at a theme park in Lyon. The Lake Macquarie athlete then turned her attention to cliff diving. After a wildcard entry into the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2016, she was quickly hailed as the ‘Australian cliff diving sensation’. Then, at the weekend, she won the women’s 2021 title for the fifth consecutive year, mastering the 21.5m platform in Polignano a Mare, Italy. Despite that success, Iffland, 30, continues to make a name on the spectacular European circuit. But, it doesn’t mean she relaxes at home in the Hunter either. Earlier this year, during a COVID-enforced break on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, she became the first person in the world to dive out of a moving hot air balloon.
