There hasn’t been much for Novocastrians to cheer about in recent times.

After being placed in an extended state-wide lockdown, due to COVID-19, which is unlikely to end on Friday 10 September, the region will turn to the Newcastle Knights to provide a shining light.

For the second consecutive season, the NRL lads – currently based in Queensland – are preparing for finals again.

It’s been a terrific effort by coach Adam O’Brien to achieve that feat in his first two years at the club.

He’s managed it, despite dealing with a horrendous injury toll throughout 2021 that included Mitchell Pearce, star fullback Kalyn Ponga, Bradman Best, Lachlan Fitzgibbon and co-captain Daniel Saifiti at various stages.

And, while most experts predict the Knights are just making up the numbers, this weekend’s rival Parramatta Eels should be worried.

Buoyed by plenty of local support, the boys will give it their all, especially for those back home in Newcastle.

If anything, their fans are the most parochial in the NRL.

RU OK?Day is an annual campaign dedicated to reminding communities that every day is the day to ask, “Are you okay?” and support those struggling with life’s ups and downs.

This year RU OK?Day falls on Thursday 9 September.

Despite the lockdown, Tiarnah will be awash in the charity’s signature sunshine yellow to do her best to bring awareness to such a worthy cause.

“Even if I can get just one person to ask someone else if they are okay, then I’ll be happy,” she says.

“Everyone’s voice deserves to be heard and a simple question saves lives everyday worldwide.”

The compassionate youngster first learned of RU OK?Day when she attended a Samaritans support

group at West Wallsend High School.

Here the group wrote stories about what teens might be going through and how to promote good mental health amongst peers.

“People might look okay on the outside,” Tiarnah says.

“But on the inside they might be really struggling.”

Her dedication has only grown over the past three years.

“It started with just a few posters around the neighbourhood, and I might have worn a pin,” she says.

“Now I have a t-shirt, bandanna, socks, and shoelaces.

“I just wish I’d been able to wear them to school to remind everyone about RU OK?Day.” Go to ruok.org.au for more information about the campaign.

Little initiative creates overwhelming ripple effect Tucked in the corner of a picnic shelter near Stockton Beach, a small cupboard is having a remarkable impact on those going without.

Stocked with food and hygiene supplies, The Little Free Pantry is an initiative providing an answer to a growing problem in Stockton.

Started by Rachel Towns, it’s a shame-free space for people who are in need to turn to.

Rachel works at a Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre and knows all too well how much support some people need.

“The idea popped into my

head because when residents are admitted to where I work, we have to go through their property,” she explained.

“One patient, all he had was a folded piece of paper of where to go for hot meals.

“It had lots of suburbs on it but Stockton wasn’t included.

“It went straight to my heart and I knew I wanted to do something.”

It was the beginning of the pandemic when Rachel set up The Little Free Pantry.

“I was hoping people would support it but I didn’t want to advertise it because of the shame that is attached to need,” she said.

“So the ripple effect has been overwhelming, it’s beautiful.”

Fast forward a year – and it’s truly been embraced.

Priscilla met Rachel after stumbling across the pantry.

As a social worker, she is hoping the pantry can transform into something bigger.

“There are not enough support services available in Stockton and the demand is really high,” she said.

“This is not a permanent solution, we need to link those people to the right services so they can get support. The demand for a community hub is also really great.

“It would be wonderful if [City of Newcastle] could help us come up with something.”

Sister Jenny is preaching hope with a difference “If I’ve inspired just one person from putting my banner up, I’m happy.”

That’s the uplifting sentiment from Sister Jenny Gerathy OP, who has attracted a bit of attention among the residents of Waratah in recent weeks.

Her carefully thought-out words, Gift Our World With Joy Love Peace Hope, adorn a residence in Station Street to offer optimism to others.

With many people struggling with the stay-at-home orders, it seemed a timely act.

“We’ve done things like this before in the past,” she explained.

“However, recently, I was out on my walk and I went past Corpus Christi (primary) school, where I’ve been a pastoral worker.

“I was moved by the fact that the children had signs up saying ‘hope’ – and they’d coloured them in with beautiful rainbow colours.

“So, I thought I could do something like that, too.

“I’m in the community of Dominican Sisters and we’re an order of preachers.

“That means we preach by our actions; it doesn’t have to be our words. But, being in this COVID time of lockdown and not being out with people, I thought to myself that’s one thing I can do.”

“I chose them because I believe it’s what our world needs – and what we need in relationships to each other,” she said.

She also offered advice to those feeling blue behind closed doors.

“The COVID environment invites us to communicate in a different way and ponder outside ourselves,” she said.

“We can be inside and think it’s miserable and horrible being in here.

“But, we have an invitation to nurture the planet – it’s the season of creation. Our Mother Earth is crying out for help.

“Those of us who have gardens can do that. And, little messages like that might just say to people ‘I can do it, too’.”

Windale medical centre offers vaccination boost Shortland federal MP Pat Conroy has praised the Windale Community Medical Centre for trying to boost coronavirus vaccination rates in his electorate.

The Lake Street clinic will establish a walk-in hub from 9am this Saturday 11 September, in an

attempt to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the region.

Residents aged 18 and older can get the jab without an appointment.

Dr Melissa Collogan said Astrazeneca would be available, even though they were still trying to source Pfizer as well.

“We’ve set this up in response to the recent positive case in the community,” she explained.

“Unfortunately, that infection highlighted the need for better access [to vaccines], which has proven to be somewhat difficult.

“Windale is quite a vulnerable community with locals suffering chronic illness and socio-economic disadvantage.

“That means the risk of morbidity and mortality is higher.

“So, we’re really trying to target Windale residents.

“However, those living in Gateshead, Mount Hutton and nearby suburbs, who have also had trouble accessing vaccination services, are welcome to attend.

“All we ask is for people to bring photo ID and their Medicare card.”

Mr Conroy said he was

extremely grateful they had organised the temporary clinic.

“I, like many community leaders, have been calling for a vaccination hub to be launched in Windale,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.

“Only 20-29% of Windale’s residents are fully-vaccinated.

“For months now, our community has had to listen to the Prime Minister and NSW Premier urge people to go and get vaccinated like it’s a simple and easy task.

“That is so far from the reality here in the Hunter.

“Every day I have people calling and emailing, asking where they can get vaccinated, with some saying they cannot get an appointment until December or early next year.”

Fans hoping finals series a Knight to remember A piece of individual brilliance by the Eighth Immortal was all it took to convert Dom Tanner to be a Newcastle Knights fan for life.

Fresh from South Africa, he’d followed rugby union for more than 40 decades.

However, seeing Andrew Johns put the Manly Sea Eagles to the sword in the famous 1997 decider caught his attention – and the Hunter-based organisation claimed member 3,949,124.

“I’ve been a [Knights] supporter since 2001,” Tanner said.

“My wife is a Novocastrian and I came over here for a holiday.

“The first video I watched was the 1997 grand final – I was like ‘yeah, whatever’.

“But, then, I saw this little bloke with the No 7 on his back do some crazy things.

“I got interested [in the game].

“I actually thought the fixture was over, then this Johns fellow made a break and passed it to winger Darren Albert who scored the match-winner in the dying moments.

“From that point on, I was hooked.

“I’m a self-confessed NRL tragic – and we’ve been Knights members for three or four years now.

“We [my family] just go mad for them.”

Tanner’s commitment to the “blue and red” army is obvious to witness, with his sons Declan, 11, and Quinn, 9, also following in his footsteps.

And, he’s equally impressed by his fellow supporters’ dedication to their club.

“Passion – that’s the key word,”

he told the Newcastle Weekly.

“The passion shown by the town that gets them going; the passion shown by the players.

“It’s mind-blowing.

“The support for the Knights is incredible.

“Even when the team is down and out, they still attract 15,000 to 20,000 people to the ground.

“And, they’re always shouting ‘Newcastle, Newcastle’.

“I still remember hearing my first chant it was an awesome experience to be a part of.”

After securing a spot in the top eight, the Knights face old foes Parramatta in the second elimination final on Sunday 12 September.

And, the Eels hold no fears to the Newcastle outfit, according to Tanner.

“Anything’s possible,” he said.

“I think we need to believe in the team. It just takes one moment of magic on the field to click the entire side into action.

“We can destroy anyone on our day. The boys must do the little things right and just go for it.”

Although the Knights are currently housed in Queensland, due to COVID-19 restrictions in NSW, the club’s loyal local fan base remains vocal.

“It’s great to see supporters sending messages to the guys,” Tanner said.

“They’ve let us know they’re playing for us.

“So, it’s important to show we’re there for them.”

Wallsend Wolves clean-up at annual awards A “stunned” Kellie-Jean Johnston is the toast of the Wallsend Touch Association after being named Administrator of the Year.

It was a hugely prosperous weekend for the Newcastle club and a number of its members, too.

annual ceremony, which was hosted online, the Wolves also secured the Hunter Western Hornets Affiliate of the Year while Rochelle Stevens, Linley Kinny and Dawn Redman snared Blues Awards.

And, for good measure, Hunter Western was recognised as the Region of the Year.

However, the big winner was a thrilled Johnston.

She walked away with the Hornets Administrator of the Year honour, edging out Katie Francis (Coolamon TA), Matthew Wong (UNSW SSR), Richard Stone (Balmain Junior TA), Carol Jones (Hornsby TA), Katrina McIlwaith (Hills Hornets TA) and Kendal Davies (Coffs Harbour TA) for the top gong.

“I feel privileged to be in this group with all these amazing people,” she said.

“I know a lot of them and the hard work they do for their

regions. So, I’m very excited to receive the award.

“The Wallsend Touch Association was humbled and extremely proud to be nominated for several classifications.

“But, to be presented as the overall winner for several categories was the icing on the cake.”

Johnston credited her father, Harold “Puddy” Miller, for her success.

“I know that my passion and drive for the Wolves comes from an amazing man, who had this little idea to start a touch footy competition at Crystal Palace (Wallsend) just over 39 years ago,” she told the Newcastle Weekly.

“I’m so proud to be part of the team that keeps his dream alive.”

Newcastle university student Wednesday Sutherland is causing a big stir with her tiny habit, and lockdown is only making it worse.

After first photographing a small window near the entrance of her Mayfield miner’s cottage more than 18 months ago, the creative 28-year-old has been fuelling an obsession with no ending in sight.

Sutherland says she’s even dreaming about little windows, waking early to troll neighbouring suburbs for the small architectural feature.

And while it began with just one photo featuring a small diamondshaped aperture, it has since grown into a collection, Sutherland even receiving interstate entries.

‘Tiny Baby Windows’ is the social media page where she now showcases her finds.

“I started seeing the same kind of windows on houses in [Mayfield] that were from the same era. They all had a similar design,” she said.

“Then every time I was out walking the dog, I’d see another one. I kept seeing them everywhere.”

In May she sought help from Lost Newcastle members, asking if they knew about the trend, where it started, where she could find some more and if anyone had any interesting anecdotes about them.

“My mum is convinced they are a Novocastrian thing, so I asked about that too," she said.

The Lost Newcastle Facebook group has 62,000 members.

What followed was an outpouring of photographs, addresses, suggestions and ideas.

In total 134 comments offered support for what the University of Newcastle visual arts student says has now become an obsession.

“My goal was just to see if any keen historians could tell me more about them,” she said.

“It was great to see so many people were as excited about the

tiny windows as me.

“Some people who responded had ancestors who were builders and they told me they [windows] were a popular feature in Newcastle.

“Some included stained-glass, and some were round, or arched, or square.

“I feel like the diamond-shape might have been the easiest to make.”

It’s origins and purpose however, remain a mystery.

“I was told they were used to illuminate the entrance,” Sutherland told Newcastle Weekly.

“Which makes sense because they usually feature in the alcove.

“And I’m not sure of the ages, but ours was a 1900’s home so it might have started there.”

The recent COVID-19 lockdown has only fuelled her obsession, Sutherland continues to wake early to wander within her 5km radius for more windows.

When she completes her university course in December, the hobby snapper is hoping to publish her collection in a coffeetable book.

Providing a permanent place for the hundreds of images stored in her phone.

She is however, still happy to discover more sites, with the community’s help.

“This is just something that started off as fun and has morphed into something bigger and better, so I’m just rolling with it for now,” she said.

“If people want to message me with more locations and any historical details I’d love that.”

But, be warned, it can be addictive.

“Once you start seeing them, you find them everywhere, it’s hard to stop.”

Mushroom and chive gyoza This week, NW brings you this recipe for flavour-filled, veggie-packed gyoza.

Makes 20-25 Gyoza Vegetable oil for cooking 1 1/2 Tbsp ginger, minced 1 garlic clove, minced 300g cup mushrooms, finely diced 200g wombok, finely diced 1 tsp tamari sauce 1/2 bunch Chinese (garlic) chives, finely chopped

Dipping sauce 1 garlic clove, minced 1 tsp ginger, minced 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil 1 Tbsp tamari sauce or soy sauce 1 Tbsp honey 1 small chilli, finely sliced

25 gyoza wrappers (round gow gee pastry)

To serve

Water

1 tsp toasted sesame seeds

1 Tbsp Asian shallots, thinly sliced

Combine the dipping sauce ingredients into a jar and shake well. Set aside until you're ready to serve.

To make the gyoza, heat a drizzle of vegetable oil in a wok or large heavy base fry pan with high sides on medium heat. Add ginger and garlic and sauté for a couple of minutes, then add the mushrooms to the pan. Cook until the mushrooms turn a golden brown colour.

Add the wombok and stir through.

After 1 minute, or once the wombok has wilted down and turned translucent, add 1 teaspoon tamari or soy sauce.

Allow to simmer for a further 2 minutes.

Turn off the heat, add the chives, and stir through.

Transfer the gyoza mixture to a sieve to drain off any excess liquid while it cools down.

Once the mix has completely cooled down, the gyoza can be wrapped.

Place 1 1/2 teaspoons (depending on how big your wrappers are) of mixture into the centre of the wrapper. Brush the edge of the wrapper with water, then fold over the wrap so it looks like

a half moon shape. Gently press the wrapper seams together along the joined seam. Set aside while the rest are made. Lay a tea towel over the top to prevent them from drying out.

Heat up a heavy base frypan to medium-high heat. Add a good drizzle of vegetable oil and place the gyoza’s bottom side down (so the seam is at the top). Allow to fry for a few minutes until the base of the pastry is a golden brown colour. Add a splash of water to the pan and place a lid on to steam them for a couple of minutes.

Once the pastry has changed to a transparent colour and all the water has evaporated gently remove them from the pan. Set them aside while the remainder are cooked.

Serve the gyoza on a platter with the dipping sauce in a small bowl to the side. Sprinkle over the top toasted sesame seeds and freshly sliced Asian shallots.

Brighten your makeup for women’s mental health By wearing their brightest lipstick this month, Hunter residents could be helping to raise much-needed funds for women’s mental health.

In the month-long national campaign, the simple act of applying some colour to a make-up routine could encourage a life-

saving conversation.

That’s the message behind Liptember, a 12-year-old campaign asking women to look beyond their makeup.

Founded in 2010, Liptember was established with the simple idea, to urge women to get sponsored to

wear bright lipsticks throughout the month of September to spark a conversation.

It has since raised more than $10 million dollars toward providing national mental health programs, support services and research into women’s mental health.

Liptember founder, Luke Morris says donning lipstick is just a small aspect of the initiative.

“The Liptember campaign demonstrates that there is true power in the collective and with COVID still impacting people across Australia, it’s more important than ever to prioritise and invest in our mental health,” he said.

“We want our community to feel completely connected and invested in a relatable, supportive and authentic campaign that really does make a difference.”

Throughout COVID-19, women experienced a 25% increase in levels of psychological distress according to the Australian

Institute of Health and Wellness.

Liptember encourages people to be part of the conversation that could help change this.

“The bright colours are not worn to look beautiful,” says Liptember’s marketing and communications manager Katrina Locandro.

“Some of them are blue and green and bright orange.

“They can be worn with crazy make-up – whatever it takes to start that conversation.

“The ‘why are you wearing bright lipstick?’ conversation.

“It’s up to participants how far they want to go with the lipstick.

“We’d love people to take a selfie and attach it to their profi les and not only brighten people’s lockdown but get people talking about women’s mental health.”

Fortunately, these days, we have become water wise.

Sure, we have had a little rain and a wet spring is predicted, but the ongoing winds are really drying out gardens.

Perhaps before I write about methods to keep gardens looking healthy, especially at the moment when being outside is important during COVID-19 lockdowns, I decided to check with Hunter Water regarding current restrictions.

If you are concerned, check their website and click on “smart water choices”.

The best news I can give you is, as of 6 September, the overall storage levels were at 96.4%.

That’s terrific for gardeners in the Hunter and Newcastle.

But, let’s comply with “smart water choices”,

You can still hand hose with a trigger nozzle, however, add to this irrigation systems or sprinklers before 10am and after 4pm.

Current owners Luke and Allison Logan say they’ve put a lot of effort into creating an “Aussie country home” feel at the address.

“When we found the block in 2013 it was overgrown with weeds,” Luke said.

“We needed a machete just to get through them, and you could hardly see the creek.”

After months spent planting native trees and clearing weeds off the water source, Luke says it now resembles the rural retreat they’d hoped for.

Luke and Allison both grew up in regional NSW, Luke in Nyngan, Allison in Dunedoo.

They’ve lived in many remote places, including the Northern Territory’s Arnhem Land.

The pair say they are used to

living in open spaces.

“When we found this block we thought it was the closest thing to having a farm in the city. It really is a unique block,” Luke said.

The style of the home will attest this, with the pair successfully recreating a bush hideaway, complete with a house settled atop stilts.

And while Luke and Allison move on to their next adventure in Gunnedah, their agent Luke Searles is hoping new buyers will appreciate its appeal.

FLYING My dad is a gyrocopter pilot and we often get to go flying together. I love sitting in the front seat and enjoying the amazing views of Newcastle’s beaches and Lake Macquarie.

SINGING I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, and whether I’m performing at the Sydney Opera House or playing piano and singing at home for fun, it’s always been a huge source of joy and passion for me.

Jessica Blunt Opera Singer Jessica is an opera singer from Lake Macquarie, who has just relocated to London to study a Master of Arts (Performance) at the Royal Academy of Music, The University of London. She is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with a Bachelor and Masters degree, and has performed professionally with Opera Australia. In 2019, she sang as a soloist at an opera gala at Carnegie Hall, New York, and in 2018 performed her Mozart role debut in Sicily, Italy. Growing up in Newcastle, she was a member of the Australian Waratah Girls’ Choir for eleven years and regularly performed with Young People’s Theatre. This passion for performing has led her to chase her dream all the way to the other side of the world, where she hopes to continue to work as a professional opera singer throughout the UK and Europe.

One of the things I love about opera is how many places it can take you around the world!

So far I’ve been lucky to sing in Italy, Sicily and New York. I also love exploring our own amazing country and spend a lot of time in Darwin where my partner, Arj, lives.

FAMILY As an only child, I am very close with my parents and grandparents and have always had their faces in the audience! We love country drives through the Hunter Valley and sitting on the beach at Shoal Bay. We also have a Golden Retriever, Harry, who always makes us laugh.

DANCE/YOGA I’ve always loved to dance, and I discovered yoga during lockdown in 2020 as a way to care for my mind and my body. It’s important to keep fit as an opera singer, and finding exercise that I love to do makes it easier! newcastleweekly.com.au
