And, unfortunately, it’s been extended since then due to the thoughtlessness of a number of individuals.

Those same people thought it was a terrific idea to leave Greater Sydney, while infected, and party in the area. Now, we’re all paying the price for their stupidity. But, even more alarming, is the fact that many locals have also flouted the restrictions, by hosting gatherings at Jesmond and a couple of other suburbs. What will it take for residents to do the right thing? For a couple of weeks’ pain, there is a long-term gain – freedom. No-one wants to endure “stay at home” orders any more than they need to. However, if people think they’re above the law or the rules don’t apply to them, we’ll be stuck in this situation for some time to come. If you considered 2020 was tough, 2021 isn’t shaping up much better. So, just follow the instructions. Until next week, keep smiling.

news Police offer $2 million for information on missing teens “If your conscience won’t make you act, maybe $2 million will.” That’s the message from Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott. It comes as the NSW Government, together with the NSW Police Force, announced on Monday 16 August two $1 million rewards for information regarding the disappearances of Lake
Macquarie teenagers Robyn Hickie and Amanda Robinson more than 40 years ago. “For far too long, Robyn and Amanda’s families have lived with the pain of losing a child but without any idea of how it happened or who is responsible,” Mr Elliott stated. “They deserve answers now and we believe that offering these new

rewards should be sufficient incentive for those with information to come forward.” In April 2019, Lake Macquarie detectives established Strike Force Arapaima to re-examine the unsolved disappearances and suspected murders of Hickie, Robinson and Gordana Kotevski. Hickie, aged 18, left her home around 7.15pm on 7 April 1979. She was last seen at a bus stop on the Pacific Highway, Belmont North. A fortnight later, Robinson, aged 14, was last seen walking along Lake Road, Swansea, on 21 April 1979, after attending a dance at her high school in Gateshead. Despite extensive investigations neither of the girls have been located. A subsequent coronial inquest into their disappearances found that the teenagers were deceased, most
likely as a result of foul play. As investigations continue, police are renewing their appeal to the community to come forward with any information. Lake Macquarie Police District Crime Manager Detective Inspector Steve Benson hopes the latest reward will encourage those who have been holding onto vital details since 1979 to share what they know with police. “The disappearances of these teenagers triggered every parent’s worst nightmare,” he said. “The Hickie and Robinson families have been fighting for the truth for four decades. “And, they deserve to know what happened to their girls. “ Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or nsw.crimestoppers.com.au - Rod Thompson

Mama-P stays optimistic amid COVID-19 outbreak Shutting up shop is not an option for Mama-P. The Charlestown-based business, like many others, has taken a big hit during the second wave of COVID-19 in the Hunter. Sales have dropped, staff hours have cut back and many aspects of
the cafe are not running as usual. However, owners James and Kylie Pheils say, despite the uncertainty, they are determined to stay open to support their staff and the community. “Our business has dropped by 50%, we also have no dine in which

makes it really tough,” James said. “It’s really quiet, there’s way less people out because of the lockdown rules but we want to try and stay open as much as we can for our community but it has been hard.” The husband-and-wife team believe the government needs to do more to support small businesses. “They must make JobKeeper more accessible,” James said. “Last time when we had it, it helped us tremendously, it was one of the better things they’ve done for small businesses. “But, this time around they are very reluctant to help.” Moving forward the pair are trying to remain optimistic. “This is all going to end one day and we’re going to get back to some kind of new normal which will benefit everybody,” Kylie said.
“Last lockdown we just kept going,” James added. “We had no idea what was happening, but we made a decision because operating is important for us and our staff. We will just keep going until it becomes financially unviable to continue, we have survived so much as a business.” The duo adds the best thing the community can do during this time is to support local. “Not everyone has got a lot of excess cash to throw around at the moment, but the community can support us by supporting local small businesses,” Kylie explained. “We have great support from our community and if we didn’t have that we couldn’t remain open, it is our staff and customers that keeps us going.” - Elizabeth Symington

news Newy mum told to urinate in car at COVID-19 testing site A Newcastle mum admitted she was “shocked” and “embarrassed” when directed to urinate in her car while attending a COVID-19 testing site in the city last week. After being deemed a close contact, due to her two children attending Jesmond Public School, Brittney headed to the University of Newcastle drive-through clinic to do, in her words, “the right thing”. She, with her six and seven-yearolds in tow, arrived at noon but following an almost three-hour wait, she needed a bathroom break. That’s when the drama unfolded. “I was about to explode,” Brittney told the Newcastle Weekly. “We weren’t even half-way through the line, after all that time, and I was, quite simply, busting. “What are you meant to do? “There are no signs or directions, so I got out of my car.
“The next thing, three people ran at me telling me to return to my vehicle. “I tried to explain the situation – and thought it was a normal question to ask. However, they said those amenities weren’t offered. “Incredibly, they told me to urinate in my car or use the bushes nearby. “I could see a few blokes, with their kids, heading down the track but I was uncomfortable doing that. “Then, what made it worse, I was informed if I refused to ‘go’ in my vehicle, they would take my licence number and report me to the police. “It was very distressing.” Without getting tested, Brittney drove away, informing a gentleman guarding the exit what had occurred. He advised her to go home – and, afterwards, come back to where he was stationed. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it that far [home],” she said.
“I had to use the toilets at a shopping centre – but what would happen if I had COVID-19 and transmitted it while I was there? “I was uncomfortable being put in that position; and, possibly, risking other people’s health. “When I returned to the testing site, I was refused entry because they had closed for the day. “I just couldn’t believe it. I later rang NSW Health about possible testing at home and, during our conversation, they unbelievably told me the same thing – you’re expected to pee yourself in your vehicle. “They don’t have anything in place to help people. “I understand the need for safety and looking out for others – that’s why I was there in the first place – however you can’t always be prepared for something like that. “As a mother of a couple of kids,
I know. What about people with health problems or the elderly? “NSW Health needs to offer toilets – and deep clean them after use.” There is some good news to this story. Despite being reported to NSW Health by the staff of the University of Newcastle drive-through clinic, Brittney eventually triumphed. “I ended up going to John Hunter Hospital,” she said. “When I let them know I was a close contact, they tested me immediately. By welcoming paying passengers on the 10-month trip Mr Roberts is hoping to raise $200,000 to build a regional museum for his beloved City of Maitland, a plan born out of “sheer frustration’’. “Morpeth, the village of 1,000 has a museum, but Maitland, the city of 70,000 people, does not have a museum,” Mr Roberts said. “We thought it’d be ideal for our bicentennial, but nothing was done, so here we go.” Mr Roberts has the support of members of the Museum for Maitland committee, the Maitland and District Historical Society, and Maitland’s Australian Museum of
Clothing and Textiles (AMCAT). Mr Roberts is planning to depart in the historic car, that was judged Australia’s best in this year’s Concours, by mid-September 2021. After transporting Old Marjorie across oceans in shipping containers, they hope to arrive in Lincolnshire before mid-July 2022. Travelling at speeds of up to 90km/hr, the journey is more about the awareness. “We’re very sane people,” he said. “We’re not fruitloops. “I am doing this to get a bit of attention back to the issue.” If you’re interested in joining Mr Roberts and Hector for a ride, or sponsoring his epic road trip, you’ll need to act fast. A Newcastle father says thank you to his ‘heroes’ National Stroke Week provided an emotional opportunity for Newcastle resident John Duenzl to offer a heartfelt “thank you” to his “heroes”. His gratitude was primarily directed at the kind strangers, who came to his aid when he had a stroke, along with the health

professionals who treated him and supported his recovery. The 39-year-old father was enjoying the first day of a beach holiday in 2019 when he lost his balance, coordination and vision in the water, but managed to scream for help. He recalled it all happened in an instant. “Thankfully there were people nearby,” Mr Duenzl said. “My wife Trudi and some kind strangers pulled me from the ocean, lay me on the sand and called Triple Zero for help. “Their swift response ensured I got to hospital quickly and received time-critical medical treatment to stop the stroke’s attack on my brain. “I can’t thank them enough. “Without that understanding of what to do, and their united effort, I
might not have received the urgent assistance I needed.” Mr Duenzl is now joining with the Stroke Foundation to encourage Novocastrians to learn and share the most common signs of stroke, F.A.S.T (Face. Arms. Speech. Time), to help save lives and reduce disability from stroke. Using the F.A.S.T test involves asking these simple questions: Face - Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? Arms - Can they lift both arms? Speech - Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? Time - Is critical. If you see any of these signs, phone 000 straight away. Stroke strikes the brain, the human control centre. More than 27,400 Australians experienced a stroke in 2020 – that is one stroke every 19 minutes.
It kills up to 1.9 million brain cells per minute, however prompt medical treatment can stop this damage. Stroke Foundation NSW state manager Rhian Paton-Kelly said Mr Duenzl’s story demonstrated how important it was to seek medical help immediately for stroke. “We know the faster a stroke patient gets to hospital and receives treatment, the better their chance is of survival and successful rehabilitation,” she explained. “John is making great gains in his recovery. “Just as John found with his experience, a united effort can make all the difference in a stroke emergency. “That’s why more people who know the F.A.S.T message, the better.” - Rod Thompson

Denman mum’s harrowing stillbirth experience Upper Hunter resident Angela Carter was alone with her doctor undergoing a routine pregnancy scan when given the most devastating news of her life. With her husband and young daughter made to wait outside due to strict COVID-19 protocols, she
was told her baby boy, Bob, had died at just 21 weeks. “I felt like I was out in the wilderness on my own,” she says. It was June 2020, and Angela says her doctor was more focused on the virus restrictions than supporting her.

“Looking back, it just made a bad situation so much worse,” she says. The 39-year-old, her husband Paul and their two girls live in the regional town of Denman. Before Bob could be delivered, however, they were told Angela would have to drive to a hospital in Newcastle to undergo more tests. Initially Paul was told he could not be with her for the birth but the hospital decided to make an exception. Angela says she was still in shock as she held her baby in her arms and said goodbye. Sadly, she is not alone in her experience. Red Nose Australia (RNA) figures reveal six babies die from stillbirth in Australia every day. “We’re hearing a number of stories like Angela’s where mums are having to go into scans on their own,” CEO Keren Ludski says.

“It is heartbreaking to think of people being alone in that moment.” Angela was introduced to RNA at her six-week hospital check-up and at the time, was unaware the national charity supported families who had experienced stillbirths. “It was very comforting to know that there were charities like Red Nose that actually do provide support for people and great resources,” she says. Talking to a counsellor helped her through this period, she says, as did speaking to others who had been through similar trauma. RNA has seen a 45% rise in calls to their bereavement support line and a 40% jump in demand for counselling since the pandemic began. RNA’s Bereavement Support Line operates 24/7 on 1300 308 307. - AAP
Annette recognised for her work with Hunter diabetics A selfless Newcastle nurse has been acknowledged for her outstanding work with diabetes patients. Annette Parkes, from the Hunter Diabetes Centre (HDC) in Merewether, was awarded the NSW Credentialled Diabetes Educator of the Year. She’s now a vital link in providing
education so that Novocastrians can live safer, longer lives. A member of the HDC multidisciplinary team, Ms Parkes has honed her craft – caring for the welfare of diabetics – under the clinical guidance of specialist Dr Claire Morbey. “Annette’s recognition is wellearned,” Dr Morbey said. “She started her nursing career 30 years ago and worked as an enrolled nurse before undertaking graduate qualifications at the University of Newcastle. Herself a diabetic, Annette is a great advocate for her patients and believes in the advancing technology now on offer to help people better manage their condition and improve their quality of life.” - Rod Thompson

‘Flashy footballer’ farewelled “Never forgotten, always remembered”. With those words, the Hunter said goodbye to Eddy Tuilotolava who lost his long battle with bone cancer earlier this month. The former Newcastle Knights junior waged war against stage 4 Ewing Sarcoma since his first diagnosis in 2018, at only 20 years of age. But, sadly, that brave fight ended in the early hours of 7 August. Sleapy’s Foundation front-man

Peter Sleap led the tributes for the popular youngster. “It was devastating to hear the news that Eddy gained his angel wings,” he said. “The Sleapy’s Foundation family supported him from the time he was diagnosed. And, we’ll continue to assist his family well into the future. “Sleapy’s Foundation and the local community send our sincere condolences to all of Eddy’s family and friends.” The Knights also expressed their deepest sympathies. “He will be remembered as a strong and flashy footballer, who possessed skill and strength wellregarded in many rugby league circles, along with a wonderful engaging personality loved by so many,” the club said in a statement. “Rest in Peace Eddy.” - Rod Thompson

Event to drive awareness for people doing it tough While most of us cannot wait for the day when we can leave home freely again, can you imagine not even having a home? That’s a reality for far too many people across the Hunter, and something Danielle Whyte is trying her hardest to change.

As part of the management team for the Our Backyard Car to Home Project she works with the community to help those experiencing homelessness. Based out of the Macquarie Life Church in Cardiff, the not-for-profit provides a safe place for people to park their cars and sleep overnight. The site offers amenities and security for those doing it tough. “We started about five years ago, there was a massive growing problem of people sleeping in public car parks and, while it took a while to get the church onboard and get it over the line, it eventually came to life,” she told the Newcastle Weekly. “We can fit hundreds of cars on site.” To help raise funds for their vital work, the charity is hosting a virtual event this Saturday 21 August. From 7pm they are encouraging participants to sleep in their cars for a glimpse at what it’s like to call a motor vehicle home. “Night Under the Stars is so we can thank the community because people do assist us with
donations,” Danielle said. “We also have volunteers that work seven days a week, we are open every single day, we don’t close for holidays or anything.” During the online event they will have people who have slept on the premises share their stories. Danielle added the speakers will likely change your view of homelessness. “It’s about creating awareness for what it’s like for people sleeping in their cars, we consider them as primary homelessness, but I think sometimes the government doesn’t see it that way,” she said. “They are not really on their radar because they have a roof over their head, but they need access to services and amenities.” For more information on the event or to donate go to macquariecare.org.au Anyone experiencing homelessness and sleeping in a registered motor vehicle is encouraged to contact the service on its intake number: 0402 155 586. “We don’t turn anyone away,” Danielle said. - Elizabeth Symington

Timing of new single ‘feels right’ for Novocastrian Newcastle singer-songwriter Brendan Hamilton is hoping his new single strikes a chord with music fans. And, with the region currently enduring ‘stay at home’ orders, the release of It Feels Right on 27 August could be deemed quite timely. Some people might recognise Hamilton as the drummer for various local bands, including Janey’s Alibi and Broadway Mile. So, he’s no stranger to making a mark on the music scene.

While in Broadway Mile, the talented muso supported artists such as Jon Stevens (Noiseworks), Dragon, You Am I and Bluejuice. He also co-wrote two tunes that reached #1 on the Triple J Unearthed charts. “Even though I’ve been writing songs since high school, I rarely sang them,” Hamilton said. “But, in 2021, I took the plunge in my first solo performance at the Stag and Hunter in Mayfield.” Now, he’s looking forward to unveiling It Feels Right. “It’s a really personal song for me,” Hamilton said. “It is about a long-distance relationship I had a few years ago. “She basically said I’m great but it’s not going to work. “And, then she’d change her mind every three-to-four weeks. “We got back together a few times; it was pretty rough. “I’ve wanted to write about it for a while, but maybe I was too bitter. “I’m glad I waited.”
It Feels Right was recorded, produced, mixed and mastered at Spinlight Studio with Rhys Zacher. “Most of NSW was going into lockdown,” Hamilton said. “The weather was shocking. “So, it was probably an ideal time to record some music. “In the end, five songs were recorded for an upcoming EP.” Comparable artists include Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Script and Dean Lewis. But, Hamilton admits he listens to basically anything. “I have a pretty eclectic taste,” he said. “It varies from Metallica to Billie Eilish, Gotye to Tool, Pink Floyd to Silverchair, John Mayer to Blink 182 – the list goes on.” It Feels Right will be available on all major streaming platforms. Simple and delicious This week NW shares this simple, tasty recipe that works for every night of the week.
Chicken schnitty & chips Serves 4 6 chicken thigh fillets 1/2 cup (75g) plain flour 1 1/2 tsp onion powder 1 Tbsp chicken stock powder 3 eggs 2 1/2 cups (150g) panko breadcrumbs 1 Tbsp dried rosemary 1kg potatoes, peeled and cut into rough 5cm angular chunks, resembling shards 1 cup (250ml) chicken stock 1/2 cup (125ml) white wine Juice of 1 lemon 1 tsp sweet paprika Sea salt Rice bran oil, for shallow-frying 1 baby cos lettuce, cut into wedges and washed vinai-no-regrette, for dressing Optional, to serve Sauerkraut, aioli and lemon wedges
Dust the chicken pieces in flour, drench in egg and press into the crumbs, then place on the tray. Repeat this until your fingers are bulbous with crumb – E.T. fingers are a suitable gauge. Rinse and continue until finished. (Or use skewers to avoid this situation). Set aside until ready to fry. Toss the potato shards in the stock, wine, lemon juice, paprika and salt to taste, then tip into a roasting tin and spread them out. Roast for 40 minutes, flipping halfway through. Heat about 5mm of rice bran oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat and cook the schnitzels for about 3 minutes each side.
Vinai-no-regrette (vinaigrette)
You want them golden and cooked through. It’s best to fry in batches to achieve this.

This close to the end of the week you would hope the salad has at least attempted to make itself, and to be fair ... it kinda has. Leaves + dressing. Eat with the schnitties and shards.

You will use this dressing often. Here are some things I do with it: • Halve the quantities and make it in the base of the large bowl you plan to serve a big green salad in. Tossing dressing from the bottom up is enlightening.
Fresh herbs, chilli, other mustards and anchovies
• Add chives.
Lemon juice + garlic + Dijon + sugar + salt + parmesan > a jar or bowl.
• Toss it through a zucchini pasta with ricotta.
Leave for 30 minutes.
• Combine some with an equal amount of mayonnaise and mix with a shredded roast chook for the easiest picnic roll filling.
Walk away.
Combine the flour, onion powder and stock powder in one bowl.
Then line a baking tray for the finished schnitz.

1 cup (250ml) extra virgin olive (EVO) oil
Place each chicken thigh between two pieces of baking paper and smack it out firmly to 1.5cm thick. Don’t be too rough or you end up with sections breaking up. A thigh schnitzel does result in a wonderfully misshaped crown affair – all the more spots for the crumb.
Mix together the panko crumbs and dried rosemary in a third bowl.
1 garlic clove, peeled and smashed (into big chunks you can fish out later)
1/2 cup (50g) grated parmesan
Preheat the oven to 200°C.
Crack the eggs into another bowl and lightly beat.

Check-ups: a healthy guideline When was the last time you went to your doctor for a check-up? I don’t mean making an appointment because you feel unwell but going to see your doctor even though you feel perfectly fine. While opinions vary, the NSW Healthline website recommends routine check-ups with your doctor once every three years if you’re under the age of 50 and in good health and once a year once you turn 50.
I must admit that I did not follow the earlier mentioned “check-up” guidelines and it was only at the insistence of my nurse wife that I started regular check-ups upon turning 50. So, my regular yearly check-ups at ages 50, 51 and 52 confirmed that I was a fit and healthy male with nothing to be concerned about. My check-up at 53 started to show some issues and then this year, at 54, the message from my doctor was
loud and clear: “Houston, we have a problem!” My lifestyle in the past four years has not changed. I eat well; I get plenty of exercise and activity; I am not overweight; I lead a very happy and stress-free lifestyle; about the only health box I do not tick is the one related to alcohol intake where I sit slightly above recommended healthy guidelines. What has changed is that I have grown older. The aging process has exposed two underlying genetic diseases, which are prevalent in my family and my indigenous background. One of these is heart disease, which my father died from at the age of 42. One morning about 12 weeks ago I participated in a high-intensity
workout with my clients. This was followed by a strenuous game of tennis. I then rode my bike to the beach and had a two-hour surf followed by a nice healthy lunch. Afterwards I walked to my doctor’s appointment feeling good, ready to get the results of some blood tests. You can imagine my shock when I was told that I had heart disease, which needed further investigation and possible intervention. While I strongly believe that most of the chronic diseases known to man can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle, we cannot outrun our genetics. So, when was the last time you had a check-up? ARTWORK My huge piece of art I got after I had an epic year in 2017, when I lived in Canberra. It was the year that changed my life and I wanted to commemorate it and this piece of art is a reminder of hard work pays off. The artwork is by Katie McKinnon.
SHOE COLLECTION I’m obsessed with shoes, I love them! I have way too many, they make me so happy! I prefer to wear sneakers over any shoes but I do the occasional heel, although I usually last three minutes in them.

My makeup line with Models Prefer, The Carb Collection...Again – it’s a huge deal to have one makeup collaboration with a brand and I have somehow managed to wrangle two! This was such a huge learning arc for me, and two years in the making. I loved learning about makeup manufacturing and using my creativity and comedy to create the ultimate inclusive makeup line!
PEN AND PAPER/LAPTOP All I need is a laptop or a pen and paper to write, writing is my favourite thing in the world. I love sitting and writing, I write every day. When I was on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, the thing I missed most was being able to write. I used to write with a stick in the dirt until I was told not to!
CANDLES AND CRYSTALS I’m such a hippy at heart, I love how relaxing candles are and I am all about a crystal in the bra! I have an uncomfortable amount of both!
