From the editor What started, possibly, as a flight of fancy might come to fruition.

At the weekend, with Greater Sydney beginning a 14-day lockdown, the question was raised: What would happen to rugby league’s showpiece event, the State of Origin, due to be played at Stadium Australia on 14 July, if the pandemic continued?

It was a fair point, given the curfew is supposed to end in Sydney five days earlier – if there are no further setbacks.

For a sports mad fan, like NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro, it prompted him to turn to social media.

He posted on Twitter: “Despite the growing risk of COVID-19 in Greater Sydney, we will not be giving up our right to host the State of Origin decider.

I’ve spoken to @pvlandys and indicated we could host the game in Newcastle if the health advice recommends it not be held in Sydney”.

Within 24 hours, the Hunter concept had gathered momentum.

Now, people – including many Novocastrians – are asking: Why not?

One, we have a brilliant facility in McDonald Jones Stadium, the home of the Knights and Jets; and, two, the region loves its rugby league.

It makes a lot of sense and would be a massive coup for the area.

Governor-General’s special visit celebrates City Hall “Big changes have occurred in Newcastle over the past 20 years and this is a really good time to celebrate.”

That was the sentiment of the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley’s AC DSC (RETD)

visit to the city last week.

He was joined by his wife Her Excellency Linda Hurley, City of Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and other esteemed guests at a ceremony on Friday 25 June to mark the completion of the exterior works to Newcastle City Hall.

“Linda and I are delighted to be

here for this very special occasion for the community,” His Excellency said during his speech.

“There’s a lot in the occasion today with us reopening the City Hall in its new glory.”

Mr Hurley believes City Hall is a sign Newcastle has moved forward in the right direction after the closure of the steelworks in 1999.

He added the city should hold onto its community spirit.

“These are big changes,” Mr Hurley said.

“You go back to the shock that must have been felt in 1999 and here we are 20-odd years on and people haven’t wrung their hands about it.

“They’ve got on and said, in a very Australian way, we’ve got an issue here we’re going to take it on and re-build the community and take it in a new direction and [Newcastle City Hall is] a visible sign of that.

“I [believe] there is a great opportunity for Newcastle to be a

lesson to others.

“I think it is a great metaphor for how communities and cities can reinvent themselves.”

During the event, Cr Nelmes had organised a surprise for the city’s guests – last year in the height of the pandemic Her Excellency performed a song she had written during a Zoom meeting with the council.

Called Sunshine Song, the University of Newcastle Choir performed the song, which delighted Mrs Hurley.

When asked what he thought about the song, His Excellency said it would live on in their memories forever.

“My wife was in tears, she wasn’t expecting it at all,” he said.

“She writes and sings to people about relationships and she really does see people giving sunshine to each other, so it was a really lovely touch today.”

Almost $7 million will be allocated from the NSW Budget to Hunter Park.

Sports and entertainment precinct closer to fruition Broadmeadow’s Hunter Sports and Entertainment Precinct is one step closer to fruition, four years after the project was first unveiled.

The state government declared on 22 June it would allocate almost $7 million, from the 2021/22 Budget, to progress the business case that will transform 63 hectares surrounding

the Newcastle Showground, Newcastle Entertainment Centre and McDonald Jones Stadium into a world-class lifestyle district known as Hunter Park.

But, the funding’s long overdue, according to Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp, after planning for the redevelopment originally started

under his predecessor Jodi McKay. “After being swept aside following the election of the Liberal-National government in 2011, the project was revived in July 2017 by then-Sports Minister Stuart Ayres who revealed a draft concept plan for the site, which included a multi-purpose area, multipurpose fields and a consolidated sports facility,” he said.

“Earlier this year, Infrastructure Australia listed it as a regional priority, while local stakeholders including Business Hunter, the Urban Development Institute of Australia – Hunter Chapter and the Property Council agree that Broadmeadow is Newcastle’s next major renewal precinct. I’m thrilled that ongoing advocacy has finally paid off.

“I’ve lost count of the number of times I have raised this in Parliament through speeches, questions and Budget Estimates, and by meeting with anyone who will give me the time of day.

“We want to be a global City,

and that means we need world-class sports and entertainment facilities, which is exactly what is touted for this precinct.

“We need to get this right – and, now, the next stage begins to make sure Newcastle gets the facilities it needs and deserves.”

City of Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes welcomed the news.

“This will be a truly transformative project for Newcastle that’ll deliver on a key element in the NSW Government’s Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan 2036,” she said.

“Hunter Park is a once-in-ageneration opportunity to create 8,000 jobs during construction, with more than 1,000 ongoing following its completion.

COVID-19 restrictions and how they impact the Hunter As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow in the state, the NSW Government introduced new restrictions in a bid to limit the spread.

From 6pm on Saturday 26 June stay-at-home orders were extended across Greater Sydney, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong until Friday 9 July.

People who have been in those areas on or after Monday 21 June are also required to follow the stayat-home orders for a period of 14 days after they left Greater Sydney.

While most residents in the Hunter will not be affected by this order, several new restrictions were introduced, including: • Visitors to households will be limited to 5 guests – including children

• Masks will be compulsory in all indoor non-residential settings, including workplaces • Drinking while standing at indoor venues will not be allowed • Singing by audiences and choirs at indoor venues or by congregants at indoor places of worship will not be allowed • Dancing will not be allowed at indoor hospitality venues or nightclubs however, dancing is allowed at weddings for the wedding party only (no more than 20 people) • The one person per four square metre rule will be re-introduced for all indoor and outdoor settings, including weddings and funerals To stay up-to-date visit nsw.gov. au or health.nsw.gov.au

“The Hunter has had strong ties with the ADF since the establishment of the Williamtown RAAF Base in 1941,” he explained.

“Today, it continues to be one of the largest single employers in the region. The transient nature of defence force roles means we have many personnel and their families moving to the region each year to take up postings.

“While this presents significant career opportunities, there are also challenges with constantly having to integrate into new communities.

“Each new posting means re-establishing a home, children’s education, partner employment, along with a myriad of other challenges, often in unfamiliar locations without a network of friends and family for support.

“HDSN aims to be this local, strong and supportive network.”

news Tribute for league stalwart In a fitting tribute to a Hunter league stalwart, Tuxford Park in Shortland has been renamed in honour of Robert “Bob” Palmer, whose life was tragically cut short last year.

Bob Palmer Oval will now forever serve as a reminder of his incredible contribution to the local community – and his beloved Shortland Devils RLFC. On 12 December, Mr Palmer was killed while walking a dog, leading to an outpouring of grief.

His daughter, Mollie, said the renaming of the oval was a special gesture that was proudly welcomed by his family.

“He is sadly missed by all who were fortunate to have him as a part of their lives,” Ms Palmer said.

“Our family has great pride in the legacy he has left at the football club and in the Shortland

community.”

Shortland Devils RLFC president Brock Johnson said the renaming of the oval was a fitting tribute for a man who gave so much to his beloved rugby league club.

“Robert “Bobby” Palmer was an extremely special member of our organisation – and the greater Shortland community,” he stated.

“He was and shall remain one of the true legends of Shortland.

“Bobby’s involvement in our club extends back to the 70s when he first began playing junior footy.

“Bobby was passionate about our club and donated countless hours to his beloved Devils.

“He was a stalwart of the club and has made such an immense contribution to not only rugby league but the wider community.

“We are proud to keep his memory alive through this tribute.”

Newcastle is being seriously considered to host the third State of Origin fixture, especially if the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow in Greater Sydney.

Stadium Australia, at this point of time, will stage the rugby league showpiece on 14 July.

However, the NSW Government introduced

From 6pm on Saturday 26 June, stay-at-home orders were extended across Greater Sydney, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong until Friday 9 July.

On Saturday night, NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro took to social media, posting on Twitter: “Despite the growing risk of COVID-19 in Greater Sydney, we will not be giving up our right to host the State of Origin decider.

“I’ve spoken to @pvlandys and indicated we could host the game in Newcastle if the health advice recommends it not be held in Sydney.”

The next morning (27 June), ARL Commission chairman Peter V’Landys refused to rule out the Hunter as a possible location.

“The full impact of the NSW Government announcement on the competition and Origin will be ‘investigated and analysed’ before any

decision is made,” he said.

“But, yes, Newcastle and, possibly, Canberra are options. However, financial considerations will also come into play.

“Unfortunately, where COVID-19 is concerned, it’s an ever-changing situation.

“What might be fine one day, isn’t necessarily the same 24 hours later.”

Newcastle Knights legend and Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns said he fully-supported an Origin move to McDonald Jones Stadium if the need arises.

“How good would that be?” he stated.

“The Hunter loves its rugby league.

“I think Newcastle would welcome the prospect with open arms; just look at the way Townsville embraced the first game this year.”

Torta al cioccolato

This is an edited extract from Torta della Nonna by Emiko Davies, published by Hardie Grant Books, RRP $34.99, available in stores nationally.

Serves 6–8 100g Dutch (unsweetened) cocoa powder, sifted, plus extra for dusting 200g (1 1/3 cups) plain flour, sifted 200g sugar 2 tsp baking powder Pinch of salt 1 tsp natural vanilla extract, or 1 vanilla bean, split lengthways and seeds scraped 350ml full-cream milk, or as needed

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 20cm round cake tin and dust with sifted cocoa powder. Tap upside down to remove any excess.

Place the dry ingredients together in a bowl (do make sure the cocoa powder is sifted well to ensure you don’t have problems with lumps later). Add the vanilla to the milk, then add this, bit by bit, to the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon until combined and smooth. If the batter is too stiff, you can add more milk (or even water).

Pour into the tin and gently smooth the top. Bake for roughly 30 minutes, or until the centre of the cake feels springy to the touch and it smells cooked – it will be distinctly chocolatey.

When it has cooled enough to handle, remove from the tin and serve as desired – dusted with icing sugar or, when completely cooled, covered in ganache, perhaps with some berries on top or whipped cream on the side.

Osprey reaches for the sky The sky’s the limit for Hunterbased band Osprey.

The group, who formed in Dungog, is spreading its wings and paving the way for what they hope will be a successful career in the music industry.

Though they’re all only young, lead singer Jasmin McLean (17), guitarist Nick Fren (18), drummer Peter Raine (18)

and bassist Jack McDonald (20) are dedicated to making their dreams become a reality.

“We started back in 2016, but it wasn’t until mid-last year that we started getting gigs,” Peter said.

“I guess you could say we officially formed in 2020.”

In such a short time, the band is proud to have achieved

so much.

“We played at the Civic Theatre for Music People Live, we opened for Thirsty Merc at The Station, we’ve opened for Spy v Spy and we were the top Triple J Hottest 100 band for Newcastle,” Jasmin said.

“Plus, we hit 23,000 streams on our debut single.”

How the group got its name is all thanks to Harry Potter.

“We actually had no idea what to call ourselves,” Nick said.

“We were originally called Colourblind and we were pulling names out of a hat and I just chose it off a quiz website for Harry Potter.

“It was a patronus quiz, which is the animal that symbolises your protection and I got an Osprey and I just chucked it in the hat.

“We went through every name and thought Osprey was the least bad one, so we kept it.”

Moving forward, Jack said the band’s short-term goal is to release an EP at the end of the year.

There are many jobs in the garden to be done, especially pruning July is the middle of winter and, yes, there are many garden jobs to be done.

One or two important chores is the rose pruning and treating the lawn however there are surprisingly many more, so rug up and off we go.

Firstly, roses can defi nitely be pruned now unless your garden is prone to frosts, it is wise to prune in August.

Climbing roses also shouldn’t be pruned now – wait until after they bloom in spring or summer.

This year bush roses and floribundas will need a hard prune and a good clean-up, removing any dead wood and using secateurs cut just above an eye to shoot shaping the rose, which gives each branch space.

Pruning roses is somewhat of an art. Part of the secret is clean cuts, not straight, but on an angle.

After pruning it is essential to spray with LimeSulphur, which can only be sprayed during dormancy.

Then apply a full bucketful of poultry manure to each rose – don’t panic, they love it.

Follow up three weeks later by a handful of rose food.

This is the time I should mention, these instructions don’t apply to potted roses as the food used at this time of year may burn. That also applies to newly-planted roses – use a product such as Sudden Impact which is slow release.

Lawns defi nitely shouldn’t be fed until actively growing, but now is an ideal time to use a fork and aerate the grass and spread with coarse sand if compacted, leaving at least 1cm of grass blade exposed. Then apply a light dressing of lime to sweeten the soil (about a handful per square metre). Water well after application to prevent burning.

If you have noticed the leaves of your peach and nectarines looking blistered and disfigured in spring and summer then they have a fungal disease known as peach leaf curl. Treat this by spraying with Lime Sulphur while dormant.

If frosts have fi nished, prune fuchsias by two thirds.

Redhead home sells ‘unseen’ for $2.7 million When a six-bedroom home in the small beachside suburb of Redhead sold for half a million dollars over its reserve price in May, the new owner, who handed over $2.725 million, was not even in the country at the time.

“Such is the new norm,” Altitude Real Estate agent Jeff Sansom says.

The sale which became a new record for the coastal Lake Macquarie suburb, was reached after 53 bids.

It surpassed its reserve of $2.2 million within minutes.

“It was an onsite auction but in this case the buyer was located in the UK and performed the whole transaction over the phone, without having set foot on the property,” Mr Sansom said.

‘Sight unseen’ as it is referred to, is becoming a regular term for

Hunter agents who are applying sold stickers to signage without ever having met the buyer in person.

“This market is the fastest booming market I’ve seen in my career and it doesn’t appear to be slowing,” he said.

Mr Sansom, who has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, believes the reopening of international borders will trigger the next wave of unprecedented prices.

“There are expatriates returning to Australia, as the safe haven, who are often buying properties ‘sight unseen’ for well above market prices,” he said.

“In my opinion when travel and migration becomes allowed again, we could be in for a property boom the likes of which we have never seen.”

A house in Redhead that sold for $500,000 over its auction reserve price, is yet to be seen by its new owner, who is quarantining after returning home from overseas.

The real estate industry is equipped to service both buyers and sellers in an online capacity, Mr Sansom reiterated.

“Over time the industry has adopted practices that have potentially prepared us for this,” he said.

“Even pre-COVID we were seeing virtual tours and floor plans available online.”

The Openn Negotiation online auction platform is another way the industry has adapted.

A COVIDSafe alternative to the traditional onsite auction, Mr Sansom says the “open and transparent method has seen success for all sellers who have opted for type of sale”.

“It’s been a positive experience for sellers,” he said.

“The online auction still drives competitive tension, much like eBay, but it is taking place online.

“It’s about what’s best for the individual client.”
