This week... From the editor Local politicians have taken aim at the NSW Government in recent times, criticising its decision to remove warning signs from mobile speed cameras. And, in many ways, you can understand why. The original concept behind the move was to improve bad driver behaviour. But, instead, all it’s done is boost the coffers of the powers-that-be. While Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery and her Maitland counterpart Jenny Aitchison raised their concerns as far back as February, Newcastle’s NSW member Tim Crakanthorp this week unveiled data, which stated fines issued to Novocastrian motorists had increased 11fold since the controversial move began. In some cases, the rises equated to 2,340% (at Broadmeadow and Hamilton) and 1,780% (at Stockton and Fern Bay) respectively. So, the big question is: has the government’s actions enhanced the attitudes of those behind the wheel? The short answer remains “no”. There are still numerous accidents on the roads every day in Newcastle, where speed is a major factor, while drivers continue to flaunt the rules. It appears people would rather pay a financial penalty weeks after the original breach than slow down, given the amount of money the government has accumulated. news Kobe’s all smiles thanks to Make-A-Wish Australia Living like a YouTuber in a mansion. That was eight-year-old Kobe Duck’s wish and thanks to Make-AWish Australia it’s now a dream come true. For Kobe, staying at a “mansion” in Clarence Town late last month and participating in activities his favourite YouTubers do, was a break from what’s been a scary few years. One night in November 2018 he went to bed with a sniffly nose and woke up the next day paralysed. “We took him to hospital and over the course of a few hours he became more paralysed and lost his ability to breathe,” his mum Kristie said. “Then we were transferred to the pediatric ICU at John Hunter Hospital where he was sedated and put on life support and still to this day he is ventilated.”

Kobe has acute flaccid myelitis, a condition affecting the spinal cord. “He still has significant upper body weakness, he uses a wheelchair but can walk using a brace,” Kristie said. “He lost his ability to swallow and speak but he has since regained the ability to speak – 12 months ago he was completely non-verbal.” The diagnosis changed his life but he’s defied the odds and has a passion for life. “He was a fit, healthy, active fiveyear-old the day before he woke up paralysed,” Kristie said. “Kobe spent 12 months in hospital so that impacted on every aspect of his wellbeing. “However, considering what he has been through he has a love for life and he has taken it in his stride. “He is very cheeky, outgoing, fun-

loving and adventurous.” The family went into lockdown last year, amid the pandemic, in a bid to keep Kobe safe and healthy. Kristie and her husband Michael only left their home in Cooranbong for groceries, but there was a silver lining that got them through – Kobe’s dream would come true as soon as the situation allowed. “Make-A-Wish really kept the excitement going,” Kristie said. “They sent him letters, packages and little surprises so it was really

good. They never forgot about Kobe and his wish.” Kristie adds the family is incredibly grateful to Make-A-Wish for helping Kobe experience his dream. “I asked him if this was everything that he hoped for and he said: ‘It is more than I hoped for’,” she said. “I want to say thank you to MakeA-Wish for making a little boy’s dreams come true. “We’re forever grateful for the memories that he was able to create.” - Elizabeth Symington

news Newcastle lifeguard Body’s courageous feat recognised One of the Newcastle’s courageous lifeguards has been honoured with a national award. When an eight-year-old girl was swept on her bodyboard out of Newcastle’s Canoe Pool, onto the rocks and into the ocean during 14-foot dangerous swell in January, Mick Body sprang into action. He moved quickly along the rock shelf and dived into the treacherous surf conditions, rescuing the youngster who was struggling to stay above the rough water. Body, joined by fellow lifeguard Luke Kelly, held onto her and navigated the large swell to return her to the safety of shore and her frantic family. It is this display of courage, professionalism and experience that has earned the City of Newcastle

employee an Australian Professional Ocean (APOLA) Lifeguard Association Meritorious Service Award, the highest accolade in the profession. Body, who has worked as a professional lifeguard for almost 20 years, said he was honoured to receive the plaudit and to be recognised for doing a job he loves and is passionate about. “It was a surprise, but definitely an honour to be recognised with this award,” he admitted. “During large swells waves engulf the Canoe Pool and then bounce off the side of the ocean baths creating a strong side wash, which catches people by surprise. “I’m pleased our rescue that day avoided an almost certain drowning. “As lifeguards we have the best

The face-to-face program targets primary school students and works with the Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre and University of Newcastle Language Centre. By developing an adapted COVIDSafe initiative, lifeguards were still able to virtually reach 14,000 students in Newcastle ensuring the community was able to receive vital information that may prevent drownings.

news NGS pupil Olivia sinks her teeth into work experience You might have noticed an extra young face, or two, throughout the local workforce last week. After a COVID-19-filled 2020, Newcastle Grammar School (NGS) reopened its Work Experience Program for Year 10 students. Pupils spent a week at their chosen workplace and were encouraged to choose professions they were interested in, giving them an idea as to which subjects to select in future as well as potential career paths. It may seem daunting for students to begin with; however, it was an opportunity for them to meet and work with new people in a “real world” environment. One NGS teen Olivia Johnson opted for Newcastle City Dental Centre as her “dream job”.

“Dentistry has always interested me,” she said. “When going to dentist appointments, I found the language and equipment used really interesting and wanted to know more about it all.” Olivia said the things she experienced at the dental centre drew her more towards dentistry as a profession. “I sat in on appointments and check-ups and watched the cleaning and fluoride treatments as well as tooth extraction, calculus removal, fillings and the fitting of dentures,” she told the Newcastle Weekly. “I found it really interesting and I enjoyed learning about it all. “I have always been fascinated in how X-rays are taken and interpreted and to be able to see and learn about this, while it was in

action, was really cool.” Olivia went on to say one of the reasons she chose dentistry was because she wanted to know more about what goes on behind the scenes and not just in her own dentist appointments. “I enjoyed talking to the patients, particularly the kids, and helping them understand everything that was going on and what each piece of equipment is used for,” she said.

Walking into the unknown for a week of work experience was quite nerve-wracking for a lot of Year 10 students. “I think it’s vital to have an open mind and choose something you’re interested in and passionate about,” Olivia explained. - Allie Martinelli (a Year 10 NGS work experience student at Newcastle Weekly)

news Surf pro Philippa Anderson joins junior learning gig Newcastle surfer Philippa Anderson is lending her hand to a new project designed to bring out the best in aspiring young female athletes. As senior ambassador for the Host A Surfer program, the talented boardrider is joining a band of junior ambassadors promoting a holistic approach to their chosen sports. Each month the 29-year-old will attend information sessions with teen athletes as a hands-on role model and mentor. The monthly meetings are the brainchild of Host A Surfer founder Kirsten Ansell, who’s not-for-profit business offers female surfers a temporary home with host families when competing in the region. The brand has since grown into an overall wellbeing program for young female athletes.

“When I think back to when I was a younger girl taking up surfing, we never had anything like this,” Anderson said. “It was just me and the guys, which was fine, but now, having this platform, this thing Kirsten has created, is wonderful for young girls. “The leadership, the guidance, the opportunities and the knowledge these girls are gaining from people who are ahead in their fields, and from a range of different areas, is so important for the girls.” Last month the group’s inaugural session included speakers from Newcastle’s Compeat Nutrition. Future seminars are set to cover diet, mental health, choosing the right coach, and fitness tips. Ansell said the sessions were a way for aspiring female athletes

to pursue success within their chosen sports, with the support of ambassadors both professional and of their same age. “[We] wanted to encourage girls to try surfing and that aligned with Philippa’s [Anderson] values as a pro-surfer and she became our first senior ambassador,” she said. “We felt now it was time to promote some of our young girls into ambassador roles, allowing them to encourage more girls to excel in their sports.”

The first junior ambassadors announced last month are Newcastle promising surfer and AFL player Ellie Nadalin and fellow St Pius student and soccer and rugby player Zara Ansell. “It’s good for girls to keep active and out there in the community,” Ellie said. “I’m loving hanging out with an amazing group of girls who all want to help me improve in my sport and I think other girls will love it too.” - Rebecca Riddle

news Holmesville preschool to celebrate 20th anniversary With less than a month until its 20th birthday, Holmesville Playhouse Preschool has its party plans well under way. The West Wallsend children’s learning hub has been in the capable hands of Vicki and Paul Courtney for almost two decades – and that, the pair say, is worth celebrating. On Saturday 3 July the centre will host a party that will include a magician, musician, a cake stall, a plant stall, face-painting, sausage sandwiches, coffee and 20 years’ worth of nostalgia. For Vicki and Paul the event will be an “open-home” of sorts. “This is very much like home for us,” Vicki says. “It’s always been a family affair, since we first took over in 2001. “Since then all of my children

have worked here at some stage, my grandkids have been here and my 88-year-old mother still helps out wherever she can. “I think it’s the family-feel that our parents love about the place.” Holmesville Playhouse Preschool is a play-based learning hub for children aged two to five. It welcomes a maximum of 28 children with six qualified educators present from 6:30am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Despite looking like “an openplan grandma’s house”, Vicki says the building was purpose-built as a preschool in the 1970s. They are the preschool’s third owners, after a family-member found an ad in a local newspaper. “It was a whirlwind – within a month we had exchanged contracts

and were getting ready to open the doors,” Vicki says. And while the pair admit the role has had its fair share of ups and downs, they cherish the memories they’ve made at the little learning hub. Being a small, private preschool Holmesville receives no government funding and cannot apply for grants. It relies on parents paying their fees.

“That does make it stressful at times,” Vicki admits. “But we want to remain accessible to any child that needs us. That’s what we’re here for.” So, when they welcome past and present families through the door on Saturday 3 July, they’re hoping the community returns the favour, turning up in large numbers to offer support. - Rebecca Riddle

news Tocal Field Days committee hands out $35,000 to local community groups Twelve community organisations and the people they serve, from Maitland to Newcastle and Vacy to the Lower Hunter, will benefit from this year’s Tocal Field Days. At a recent morning tea at Tocal College, event organisers handed out $35,000 in grants from the proceeds from the three-day extravaganza conducted from 30 April to 2 May. The 2021 recipients included Maitland Rugby Club, Hunter Region Scouts, Maitland Legacy, Maitland Rotary Club, Newcastle Men’s Shed, Maitland Men’s Shed, Maitland Community Care, Vacy Public School, East Maitland Kiwanis Club, East Maitland Rotary Club, Hunter Valley Slow Food and Tocal Homestead. Manager Wendy Franklin said Tocal Field Days always gave back to the many community groups who offered such valuable support both in the lead-up and during the event. “We couldn’t put on the event without the assistance of the great people in these organisations who help us with set up, parking

and exhibit area management,” she explained. “We run a tight ship when staging the event so we can give back as much as possible to the community. “Tocal Field Days gives people a great day out, puts farming on show and it also supports local organisations that often struggle for vital funds.” A record 28,539 people attended the event at the Tocal Agricultural College, Paterson. COVID-19 restrictions meant the 2020 edition had to be postponed. “It was the best field days in the 12 years I’ve been managing the event,” Ms Franklin said. “Unfortunately, it was my last in the role.” Recruitment is now underway for her replacement. Like father, like son for Maitland Pickers pairing When Tom Cant recently made his first grade debut, father Matt was beaming with pride. Twenty-six years ago, he also took the same steps with the Maitland Pickers in the Newcastle Rugby League competition. So, to witness his son donning the “black, green and white” strip, too, brought a big smile to his face. “It was a very proud moment for the family,” Matt said. “Tom’s been in the [Newcastle] Knights’ system since the age of 13 or 14. “So, he’s competed at some pretty good levels. “He made the NSW State of Origin under-16 team as well – they won in Queensland and he played the whole game. “Tom started with the East Maitland Griffins (juniors), another of my old clubs, and then went to the Knights. “He came over here [to the Pickers] last year to play in the under-19s. “However, in the very first game he dislocated his knee and missed the entire season. “He returned to the Knights in 2021, but those commitments are over now, so he’s back at the Pickers. To make his debut, while still a teenager, was a fantastic achievement.

“Put it this way, he’s done a lot better than me,” he added with a laugh. Matt, himself, joined the Pickers in 1995, however his stint was short-lived. “Yeah, I only had one season here – and I loved it,” he said. “But, it was the year that unfortunately we lost two good blokes (Terry Chipperfield and Daniel Charnock) in a car accident. “It had a massive impact on the club. “Due to that adversity, I went back home, rather than stay. “I sort of regret it now – I wish I’d been around a bit longer to be honest.” Matt quickly turned the spotlight back onto his offspring. “Tom’s a real credit to himself,” he said. “My wife and I are extremely proud of him as he’s done all the hard yards to get back to where he is. “To secure an opportunity in first grade so early blew us away. “I presented the jumper to him and went into the sheds afterwards. “(Coach) Matt Lantry has the best set-up here with all the guys. “It’s so professional. “I know my boy’s in good hands.” - Rod Thompson

That’s the opinion of general manager Garry Dore, who boasts a good eye for up-and-coming talent. With the teenager returning to the Hunter fold in 2021, the GM is confident we’ll see more of Hawes, most likely on the international stage, in years to come. “Ethan might have an accent, but his mum and dad are Aussie, he played juniors here and we’re excited to have him on deck this season,” Dore said. “Firstly, because he’s a Wangi Wangi/ Newcastle lad and, secondly, he’s a great find. “His parents were transferred to the United States, so he went with them and progressed his [ice hockey] skills there to a junior A level.

I started the 2020 season in the BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League) overseas and then COVID-19 hit. “Everything got shut down, so it was a bit of a funky year. “I’m hoping to get back over there and play either the BCHL or WHL (Western Hockey League) in Canada – we’ll see what happens.” So, how does a boy from the outskirts of Newcastle find himself in such a sport? “It’s funny, I lived at Wangi Wangi down the road from my grandparents’ house,” Hawes said. “I grew up half the time there and the other half in Belford. “There’s not too much ice skating in the Upper Hunter. “But, I actually started the sport

Historic Morpeth to celebrate 200 years The small historic town of Morpeth will mark its Bicentenary this November, celebrating its charm, stories, and heritage. Once one of the most important river ports in NSW and a key part of the development of the entire Hunter Valley, the township was originally known by its Aboriginal name ‘Illalaung’ and traditional land of the Wonnarua people. While it’s no longer known for its trade, the town continues to welcome visitors every year and has several thriving businesses within its shopping and dining precinct. It’s beautifully preserved buildings, unique walkways,

cobblestone paths and location on the Hunter River make it a destination to be discovered. Maitland City Council is currently pulling together its official schedule for the weekend of 20 and 21 November and is asking the community to submit their events to be included in the program. Community groups are also being encouraged to apply for grants to help get their event ideas off the ground. plans to proceed with three Bicentenary projects, which will leave legacy pieces of community infrastructure, including a riverside shared pathway (stage 1a of the Morpeth to Walka Shared path), Steamer Street shared pathway, and architectural lighting of Morpeth Bridge.

The council is also proceeding with a program of activities for the weekend such as a Corroboree and Morpeth Bridge open day. The bridge open day will mean there will be no traffic along the stretch, so people will be able to walk across it or stop and have a picnic.

Have a whale of a time during migration season Whale watchers are in for a real treat. The annual migration of humpbacks is currently underway along the East Coast of Australia. From now through to early November, Newcastle’s stunning coastline comes alive with thousands of majestic whales, who are making their 5,000km journey from feeding grounds in the icy Antarctic Southern Ocean to the warmer waters off northern Queensland. The Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans (ORRCA) census results from the past 21 years indicate a gradual increase of migration numbers. It’s expected 2021 will be the most populated yet with researchers hoping for a 1015% increase on 2020’s recorded population of more than 35,000

humpback whales. Numbers have recovered so well for the species that the federal government is considering delisting the mammal, which is categorised as vulnerable under national environmental laws, due to the recovery of populations since the end of whaling. NOVA Cruises general manager Peter Hanrahan said he had been keeping a close eye on the migration patterns from Newcastle since the company pioneered whale watching from the city back in 2007. “The comeback of the whale population is great news not only for the humpback species but is also a good indication on the health of our oceans and the environment,” he explained. “The fact we are seeing more and more whales every year is terrific.”

Bunyips to hit the stage Young People’s Theatre Newcastle will be presenting BUNYIPS, A Big Beautiful Mess of a Play during the upcoming school holidays. Based on the Australian Children’s book Naked Bunyip Dancing by Steven Herrick, the 65-minute production takes a comical look at the ups and downs of being a kid in Year 6. The original book has been adapted for stage by former YPT student Callan Purcell who is currently performing in the Australian cast of Hamilton at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre. The production sees Class 6C bursting at the seams to express themselves, but they do not know how until Mr Carey brings his yoga, sage and Shakespeare, and things are never the same again. “Watch these kids rap, dance, speak in bird language and dream

their way through Year 6,” YPT's associate director Chelsea Willis says. BUNYIPS, A Big Beautiful Mess of a Play will be performed at YPT Theatre in Hamilton from Tuesday 29 June to Thursday 17 July. Winter warmer: wonton soup Nothing says winter like a bowl of soup! This week, we bring you this wonton soup recipe that will warm and nourish from within. This is an extract from Makan by Elizabeth Haigh, published by Bloomsbury, available now, $49.99.

Serves 4, or 6 as a side 1/2 pack wonton skins/wrappers 2L salted water 2L chicken stock Soy sauce Choi sum or lettuce, shredded Spring onions, chopped Toasted sesame oil Salt and white pepper For the filling 200g minced pork (with 10% fat) 3/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp caster sugar 1/2 tsp toasted sesame oil A good pinch of white pepper 1 Tbsp rice wine (shaoxing or sake) 2 tsp corn or groundnut (peanut) oil 1 Tbsp water 1/2 tsp cornflour, plus extra for dusting 170g peeled raw prawns, chopped

Start by making the wonton filling. Put all the ingredients, except the prawns, in a bowl and mix together by hand for 5 minutes. You want to make sure that the pork and seasonings are thoroughly combined. Mix in the chopped prawns until evenly incorporated. To make each wonton, take a wonton skin and put about 1 teaspoon of filling in the middle. Wet the edges

Continue making wontons like this – you should be able to make about 3 dozen, depending on how generous you are with the filling. Bring the salted water to the boil in a saucepan, then turn the heat down to medium. Add the wontons one at a time to the water. Don’t rush and don’t crowd the pan, cook in batches if you need to. Once a wonton is cooked, it will float to the surface, around 4–5 minutes. Scoop out the cooked wonton and place in cold water for 10 seconds. Lift out and set aside. Continue until all your wontons are cooked. To complete the soup, bring the chicken stock to the boil in a large pot, then turn the heat down to medium. Season with salt, pepper and soy sauce to taste. Add the choi sum or lettuce, then add the cooked wontons, dropping them gently into the soup. Take care not to stir hard as you don’t want to break the delicate wontons. Ladle into bowls. Alternatively, I find it easier to put the wontons into bowls and ladle the stock into the bowls. Garnish each with chopped spring onions and a drop of sesame oil. 23

Newcastle fitness studio finds success in Kotara It’s a sports remedy that’s been around since the 70s but it’s only just hitting Newcastle. Based on electronic muscle stimulation, Speedfit is being touted as ‘the smarter workout’. Welcomed to Kotara by fitness fanatic Amy Hart, the small business is seeing Newcastle gain nationwide attention. Within six months of opening the Bradford Close franchise in September 2020, Ms Hart has become the manager of the most successful Speedfit studio in Australia. The former remedial massage therapist and mixed martial arts rehabilitator believes the product is one that sells itself. Speedfit is a 20-minute workout

using EMS technology. “It sends small electrical impulses to muscles through a vest that you’re wearing, which has electrodes in it,” Ms Hart said. “That helps contract the muscles for you, so it actually contracts muscle fibres on a deeper level compared to if you were lifting weights. “It’s a full body workout in a small amount of time.” Ms Hart says the purchase of the franchise was born off the back of her own sports injury. “I’m your classic example of someone who has overtrained all their life,” she said. “I’ve always been into fitness at a high level, even as a kid, but I’d get to national level and I’d injure myself. “I’ve done my knee in netball, my

badly and that was the end of training and working.” What followed was a move to Perth and a chance meeting with Speedfit founder Matej Varhalik. When she first started at the gym in December 2020, she struggled to lift a 10-kilogram bar. “[When I joined] I did not know what to expect given my underlying health conditions,” Christine said. “I have a chronic lung condition, plus a permanent pseudomonas infection in my lungs (similar to Cystic Fibrosis sufferers), asthma, scoliosis of my spine and neck muscle issues. “In the short time I have been attending Groundwork Fitness, with Karl’s knowledge and encouragement I have experienced a significant improvement in my overall wellbeing. “At the outset, I was barely able to lift the lightest bar (without any weights), and I have progressed week by week with a great sense of achievement.

“My trepidation has turned to anticipation and I look forward to my sessions as I can feel the many benefits to my body.” Groundwork Fitness owner Karl believes Christine is a great example to show weight training can be beneficial to anyone, especially those of an older age. He adds she is not the only client achieving great results. “The gym was built for older members,” he said. “Osteoporosis Australia says that the more we age, the more important it is to train with weights. “The best thing is that we have had some amazing results. “We’ve a small membership at the moment – but everyone is seeing the results that weight training can achieve in such a short time.” He hopes his members can come along to the gym and gain more than

just some exercise. “After each session, people can grab a coffee and have conversations with other members,” Karl said. “This way they have the social interaction and physical conditioning that can help their mental health.” Living with Cerebral Palsy, Karl knows all too all too well how beneficial it can be. “Strength training has basically kept me upright – if I didn’t squat and deadlift, I’d be either in a wheelchair or finding it very difficult to walk,” he said.

There are some amazing varieties in the begonia family.

Winter’s arrival turns thought to house plants I doubt anyone would disagree with me – the colder weather has arrived and my thoughts turn to house plants. In today’s marketplace the choice of plants for inside is far greater than before. The beginner should start with a few hardy plants such as Sansevieria (Mother-in-Law’s Tongue) and Aspidistra. Both are suited to the dryer atmosphere created during winter by heating. There are plants that will survive in fluctuating

home temperatures – although there have been many varieties introduced of the Ficus family. I fi nd many drop leaves if not handled carefully, that is apart from Ficus elastic decorative, the Indian Rubber Plant. It has a thick woody stem and stiff dark leaves, the new growth appearing as red while opening. One of my favourites, which I fi nd tolerate heat and cold, is commonly known as the spider plant (Chlorophytum variegated). It has long green and white narrow leaves, great for hanging baskets, and it produces babies off its end shoots. There are some great plants, which require minimum temperatures of 10-12 degrees indoors. There are also some amazing varieties in the Begonia family, which is a rhizomatous plant grown for its decorative leaves, although they do display sprays of pretty flowers. Plants such as Marble Queen and Devil’s Ivy are great all-year round performers in most positions and they aren’t thirsty like ferns. One family that doesn’t like overwatering are peperomia of which there are too many varieties in today’s marketplace to describe. Now this is an interesting plant – the Draceana fragrance. The long sword-like leaves are often

sculptured into thick stems of varying heights and look magic when wiped over with white oil, an insecticide that cleans off the dust and discourages insects.

Buyers encouraged to look further afield The Lower Hunter is fast becoming one of the regions to gain from a growing desire of city-slickers to fi nd a lifestyle they still crave. Cheaper real estate, spacious blocks, less traffic and a more relaxed way of life remain a drawcard for townships in and around Maitland; including Chisholm, Lochinvar and Farley. First home buyers can also still secure a home for less than $500,000 – a far cry from Newcastle’s new median house price of $700,000. Ren Property real estate agent David Podmore says adequately preparing for the influx of expected “tree-changers” was imperative. “Land at the moment, as most residential real estate, is in short supply,” he said. “We commenced marketing large level lots in Lochinvar Downs in October 2019 as we were aware of a shortage of this particular product in the marketplace.”

Buyers have since come from far afield, the experienced agent admits. “Initially [it was] local buyers, then Newcastle owner occupiers, followed by Sydney buyers, both owner occupier and investor groups,” he said. “We have 105 sales to date in six stages, prices increasing with each stage. “Early buyers were particularly fortunate as the market has moved considerably.” Infrastructure, Mr Podmore warns, needs to keep up. “Building a brand-new dream home is just that, a dream,” he said. “Lochinvar Downs has schooling nearby and parks adjacent, [it’s] not too far to simply everything at Rutherford and it won’t be too long before there is a local mini shopping centre in Lochinvar Downs itself.” The Maitland local government area covers almost 400 square kilometres from Woodberry in the

east, to Lochinvar in the west. The city is half-an-hour drive to Newcastle beaches, the same to Hunter valley vineyards and a three-hour train ride from Sydney’s Central Station. A new hospital is also due to open early 2022. In its Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 released in 2020, Maitland City Council estimated its population would increase to 44,300 by 2040. Providing for the additional 12,600 residents has been at the forefront of council planning. “Maitland City Council has been providing a large proportion of greenfield land in the Lower Hunter for a number of years,” a spokesperson said. “The ongoing release of this land aims to keep track with the demand for new land for family houses. “We have consistently aimed to have a 15 year forward supply of land available to be developed for

I love the 1970s décor, mainly it’s the draw of those bold colours and patterns that you don’t see so often these days. I bought this lamp about 20 years ago, it cost me around $70 and had a label on it which said, “for someone who has everything but taste”.

I am a massive fan of cake but if I’m honest it’s actually the butter I’m trying to get at. I love it on toast, crackers, in icing, pastries, on pasta, veggies or just straight from the fridge. I did this painting to immortalise butter forever. Luckily my friend Belinda bought it and she lives locally, so I can go and get a fix without blocking my arteries.

Rachel Milne was born in the UK but has lived in Newcastle for eight years. She is married to Marc and is mum to four-year-old Arthur and 18-month-old Will. The family lives in Cardiff with their dog Fred. Rachel paints in oils, from life (not photographs) and she particularly loves painting house interiors, old buildings and everyday items such as chairs and food. Rachel’s work has been hung as part of the Wynne Prize at the Gallery of New South Wales in 2017 and 2018. Her first solo exhibition, Nest at Newcastle Regional Art Gallery opened on Saturday 15 May, with many of the paintings featuring Newcastle and the surrounding area. 46

OIL PAINT With oil paint, when you make a mark it stays that way forever. I love the texture and fluidity of it and the colours that don’t flatten or fade like acrylics can. It also smells beautiful.

I love my family but I feel like I have to give this favourite to our family dog, Fred. He’s a black lab of the sweetest nature and no matter what is happening in the family his steady, friendly, consistent, persistent love benefits all of us so much.

SWIMMING A couple of years ago my friend Laura asked me if I wanted to take swimming lessons. I was pretty keen, but I never anticipated how much I’d fall in love with swimming and then with the beautiful public swimming pools of Newcastle. I meet two lovely friends every Sunday and we swim. I’ve also painted many of the Newcastle pools and these will be on show at the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery from now until 1 August.
