From the editor The National Rugby League (NRL) Commission has caused a major stir in recent weeks with its “high shot” policy. And, while I understand it is trying to protect the players, and young stars like Newcastle’s Kalyn Ponga and Sydney Roosters’ Sam Walker, it’s the way they’ve gone about it. The NRL has a long history of kneejerk reactions – and this appears a similar instance. However, what most people can’t fathom is why the organisation took such a strong stance in the middle of a season. Could it not have waited until the end of 2021? Then chairman Peter V’landys and his offsider Andrew Abdo would have been able to meet every club separately and explain the NRL’s reasoning. They’d also have a bit of time to overhaul their tackling techniques. Even as a junior, you get taught to never attack the head of a rival player. So, no-one goes out to deliberately decapitate anyone. But, accidents happen and in the frenetic world of sport, they will continue to occur, no matter what rules are in place. I truly hope the game’s showpiece, the upcoming State of Origin series, isn’t marred by the NRL’s decision. Until next week, keep smiling - Rod Thompson

news Local foundation hands out $930,000 to organisations Fifteen NSW-based charities, including nine from the Newcastle and Hunter region, were awarded $930,000 worth of funding grants for life-changing projects at the 2021 Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation grant ceremony. A big crowd, consisting of many representatives from the recipient organisations, along with special guests and board members, converged on the Merewether Surf Club on Thursday 27 May to acknowledge numerous communityminded groups – and their wholehearted efforts to assist others. Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation chair Jennifer Leslie said she was proud of their history of “giving back”. “These grants will enable projects and initiatives that directly address

disadvantage, marginalisation or isolation for people, from muchneeded health projects, initiatives that aid vulnerable young people, to programs that build resilient and connected communities in Newcastle and the Hunter,” she explained. “To date, the Charitable Foundation has now funded more than 500 projects and, as of today, has given in excess of $23.5m to charities and not-for-profits. “This funding has helped to rewrite the future for so many in our local community, enabling us to work together with our charity partners in all corners of the state to solve problems, lend helping hands, secure improvements, ensure security, offer hope and give support to those in need.” Those to benefit include:

news Principal Cheryl is a class above after five decades It may have happened by accident, but Cheryl Henderson was always meant to teach. When she graduated high school, teaching was not her number one choice but it was the course she got accepted to do and, since then, she hasn’t looked back. The Our Lady of Lourdes principal celebrated 50 years in the industry last week with a special ceremony at the Tarro-based school. To mark the occasion, she was joined by staff, students, parents, representatives from the Catholic Diocese of Maitland – Newcastle and her family for a surprise ceremony. Mrs Henderson was showered with gifts, flowers, music and a unique performance. When it comes to many career highlights, she said it was difficult to

pinpoint exactly what they would be. “That’s a hard question because it’s been such a long evolution,” she said. “I worked at my sons’ schools and then I had the privilege of being here for my grandchildren but the milestones, I guess, are having those positions of leadership where I feel I can really make a difference by helping teachers as well as kids. “I got into education by accident but I love it. “I am passionate about what it offers, we accept people where they are and we get to walk the journey with them, we’re with them and their families throughout their lives through the good times and the bad.” She hopes every pupil who walks through the school’s gates leaves

knowing they are loved, accepted and have someone to stand by them. “A few weeks ago I met up with one of my former Year 6 students who repeated to me something I taught him many years ago: ‘Stand up for what is right even if you stand alone’,” Mrs Henderson said. “He was able to say that as an adult to me in the street and it was a wonderful moment knowing he remembered it.” Moving forward, Mrs Henderson

has no plan to retire any time soon, she’s been with Our Lady of Lourdes for 13 years. “I can’t imagine not being part of the school community,” she said. She remains driven to help young people. Catholic Schools NSW also celebrated a milestone last week. For the past 200 years they’ve been teaching students across the state. - Elizabeth Symington

Divas dedicate day to Meg An iconic Hunter charity fundraiser hosted its 10th anniversary event on 28 May in honour of the late Meg Purser – the day of what would have been her 53rd birthday. Divas on the Green is a networking affair for women, which raises funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, that also involves a little bit of golf. Event organiser Michelle Faithfull hired a 400sqm marquee for the grounds of Merewether Golf Course to accommodate the 200 people attending the sold-out function in a COVIDSafe way. Ms Purser’s husband Scott and parents, Noleen and Bob, were special guests at the luncheon. Ms Faithfull also named the pavilion “Meg’s marquee” in

honour of the businesswoman and 2021 Charlestown Woman of the Year, who tragically died of breast cancer recently. Ms Purser was a friend and colleague of Ms Faithfull, who conducted her public memorial service at Newcastle City Hall. “I wanted to recognise Meg, particularly given Divas is on her birthday,” she said. “Meg worked tirelessly for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation. “She was a regular attendee at Divas and always offered her support and lent a hand with the event, in the same way she supported so many other organisations and causes.” Since 2011, Divas has raised $125,000 for the charities. - Rod Thompson

news Hospital on track to Designs for $780m open early next year JHH tower unveiled Construction on the new Maitland Hospital is forging ahead to deliver world-leading health services to the Hunter region by early 2022. NSW Minister for Health Brad Hazzard visited the site recently to see the $470 million project’s progress first-hand. He toured the emergency and outpatients departments, birthing suites, special care nursery, intensive care unit, operating theatres, renal and chemotherapy units, and the rooftop helipad, which has just completed testing by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter team. “It is just fantastic to see the great progress on the new Maitland Hospital, which is on track to deliver world-class health care from early next year,” Mr Hazzard said. “The new Maitland Hospital project is a major opportunity to embrace technology and innovation, creating new ways of working and ultimately improving health outcomes for patients.” The redevelopment will also include a new $30 million car park, bringing the total investment in the new Maitland Hospital to half a billion dollars.

The new seven-storey $780 million John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s hospitals’ clinical tower is set to transform health care for the region. The facility will see a 60% increase in Intensive Care Unit capacity and almost 50% more theatres. NSW Minister for Health Brad Hazzard unveiled the completed designs of the Acute Services Building. He said it would deliver a broad range of services as the centrepiece of the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct. “This first-rate health precinct will not only significantly enhance capacity for clinical care and collaboration between the health, research and education sectors but be a key driver of economic growth in the region,” he announced. “The cleverly-designed Acute Services Building will house cutting-edge technology, enabling John Hunter’s incredible staff to continue to deliver exemplary health care to the greater Newcastle, Hunter New England and northern NSW regions.” Works will start next year and are due for completion in 2026/2027.

Hamish is helping bring NF out of the shadows checked now with 12-monthly MRI scans,” she said. “Now we just take it day-byday – we’ve been so lucky to have a pretty good outcome from a pretty bad situation. “He is as happy as anything, he goes with the flow and whatever he does, he does with a smile on his face.” For Hamish the diagnosis is a bit scary but Melissa and her husband Mark try to prevent him from worrying too much. “It’s too scary to think about – what’s the point in worrying? “He could continue as he is now but he could also take a turn, we just live in the now,” she said. Melissa says the worst part of the diagnosis is the fear of the unknown. As one of the faces of the Children’s Tumour Foundation, Melissa shared Hamish’s story during NF Awareness Month. Throughout May, the Cessnock locals alongside the foundation raised awareness to bring NF “out of the shadows”. While it’s a condition not many of us know about, on average every three days a child is born with NF in Australia. - Elizabeth Symington

Nine-year-old Hamish has been fighting a battle since he was just three and, while he’s had his moment, he’s done it all with a smile on his face. He has Neurofibromatosis (NF) – a lifelong genetic condition that causes tumours to form on nerves in the body, including the brain and spine. His mum, Melissa, said the diagnosis came as a real shock. Hamish was a happy and healthy baby who met all of his milestones but Melissa noticed he lacked energy, had new birth marks appearing and began choking occasionally on fluids. What followed was several doctors appointments, a trip to a specialist and some tests before being diagnosed with NF. “Hamish was three when we found out he had a tumour on his brain,” she said. “We were all shattered by the news.” Melissa adds that Hamish is okay now but because the tumour is inoperable they have to be careful and monitor it. “When we found out he had NF the outcome of the brain tumour was not as scary, it’s a benign tumour that he has to have

Tributes are flooding in for the late Melva Hancock. The 90-year-old passed away on Saturday 29 May, just 20 days after celebrating her birthday. The bold, brave and passionate trailblazer leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication not only in her home, the Hunter region, but also right around Australia. In 1957 she led the way for women in basketball as part of the first team to leave the country. Melva, alongside the Opals, travelled across the Pacific Ocean to Brazil for the Basketball World Championships. The Newcastle Weekly was lucky enough to sit down with Melva last month to discuss her time on the ground-breaking tour. “It was the trip of a lifetime,” she said. Prior to the journey Melva would walk the streets of Newcastle selling raffle tickets and raising funds to cover the cost of travel. “Back in those days there were no planes to fly between Australia and South America,” Melva said. “To do it we had to stop at a lot of places by ship.” First up the team went to New Zealand, then they were on a ship for four weeks to Panama City and then they travelled to Haiti and Venezuela before finally making it to Brazil.

While they placed 10th at the tournament, Melva said the highlight of the trip was taking part in a women in sport parade. “We had to decide if we were going to be serious or wave during the parade,” she said. “So we gave them a wave to make their day and we were walking around and the noise was absolutely fantastic and I said to one of the others: ‘Can you see what’s happening behind us, whatever it is they’re getting a good ovation’. “We turned around and saw that we were the only ones in the arena, they were cheering us.” Melva dedicated much of her life to sport and helping women succeed across a variety of disciplines. She was the recipient of a plethora of awards including the Australian Sport Medal. Melva was also inducted into the Basketball NSW Hall of Fame, and the Hunter Region Sporting Hall of Fame. According to her family, she retained her incredible spirit right up until her last moments. She is survived by her children Kathy and John, grandson Adam, partner Ryan, niece Dianne and family. Artist driven by love for his mother A lot can happen in a year. For The Creator Incubator artist Graham Wilson that’s the overarching sentiment of 2020. The past 12 months have posed many challenges for people across the country, for Wilson it cancelled an international holiday but meant he had more time to focus on his art. “2020 was the year that our daughter was to graduate after four years at Tokyo University,” he said. “Everything was booked when COVID-19 hit. “Ruby’s graduation was cancelled and then our flights.” With leave available and domestic travel still an option, Wilson and his partner Jane decided to take a holiday and

visit Tasmania. When they arrived, the state went into lockdown but they continued to travel through the countryside all the way to Cradle Mountain. “With anxiety building as the world shut down around us, we found ourselves, on a crystal clear morning, at peace in the sacred landscape of Cradle Mountain and its reflection in Dove Lake,” he said. “It was short-lived peace as we had to cut our trip short and flee home.” The Wynne Prize 2021 finalist said the trip and Tasmania’s incredible landscape inspired him to create a series of works. “I made a small painting in home isolation and when I

returned to The Creator Incubator, I began two larger portraits of Cradle Mountain,” he said. “I completed a painting and a woodcut and entered them in the Glover Prize. “My entries were unsuccessful

and when you’re rejected from an exhibition it is easy to become despondent, but I fought that emotion and created a giant version of the woodcut to better express the grandeur of the landscape.” Wilson carved the image over two plywood panels measuring 2.4 metres by 1.2 metres. It was 4.8 metres wide in total. Sadly, after beginning the project, Wilson took another hit – his mum fell sick. “Somewhere along the way my mother began to feel very ill and at about the mid-way point she died,” he explained. “I felt compelled to complete the work – all my love and loss for my mother was directed into the piece. “This work has now been selected for consideration in the Wynne Prize. “I only wish I could share the news with my mum.”

The innovative not-for-profit group of creatives are offering freshly baked

brainchild of a collective who see the community as the core of their work. “We want to make sure that everyone in our community can participate, no matter what their bank balance may be,” co-founder Tim Evans said. “It’s about food justice and access to healthy fresh food which puts people over profit.” The bakery has been in a test-run phase for several months as team members train and high quality local ingredients are sourced. Piratti will open one day a week – Thursdays, and offer sourdough loaves, Finnish sweet cardamom bread ‘pulla’, cinnamon scrolls and seasonal muffins. The team is made up of eight musicians, artists and designers. All of its produce is plant-based and designed to foster a regenerative culture. “It’s the true meaning of hospitality,” team member Mia Peters said. “It’s about building a society based on quality not quantity. “We’re locals and we want to break down the systemic barriers capitalism creates between humans. “We want to show that there are other ways to do things, so maybe others will try their own ideas out as well. “Really, in a nutshell, it’s about bread and friendship.” Fellow team member Sarah

Ladyman says the group’s focus is on giving back. “Every decision we make as a group, takes into account the effect it will have on people, place, the environment and the intergenerational equity of those decisions,” she said. “It’s about finding ways to leave more than we take, whether it’s with our neighbours in this neighbourhood or the whole community of Newcastle.” The alternative pricing model is categorised using native animals to make the process less confronting for buyers. “It’s an opt-in, self-select guide, that has been designed to be welcoming, inclusive and safe for all,” Sarah said. “Food justice”, the group says “is equal access to food for all people regardless of their means”. The bakery’s name stems from Tim’s Finnish background. “It means ‘pirate’ in Finnish,” Sarah explains. “The breads are made using Tim’s grandma’s recipes.” Piratti Sourdough Bakery officially launched on Thursday 27 May with a community celebration including live music and an array of freshly baked snacks. Don’t abandon watering habits during winter chill

Yes, winter has arrived, even though the cold weather is making outdoor work unpleasant. As the soil temperature becomes colder, growth does slow down, but winter is the ideal time to execute heavy garden chores, such as construction of new gardens, correction of drainage problems and paving. Personally, I have two retaining walls to replace – copper logs, which have fi nally given way after torrential rain. Watering isn’t as high on the list as summer, but during strong winds like the ones we have

recently experienced, the garden will wilt quickly, especially newly-planted seedlings of vegetables and flowers. Therefore, don’t abandon watering during winter, but keep a practical eye on the garden especially on potted plants or those newly-planted. Some trees and shrubs will object to being pruned during June, particularly in areas susceptible to frosts, but there are a few species which can have attention. They include abulia, plumbago (when it fi nishes flowering) and grapes, both fruiting and ornamental. Tropical species defi nitely shouldn’t be pruned during winter as they will be burnt by the cold. Keep a bottle of Stresguard on hand to ensure that plants susceptible to the cold can be readily sprayed if a cold night or frost is predicted. Sasanqua camellias are still flowering, they bloom for many months – they are great as specimens, wonderful for espaliering and fabulous for screening, particularly along a narrow driveway.

When they have fi nished flowering, they can be pruned to develop into a great hedge – to encourage dense growth, fertilise with cow manure after pruning. Once spring bulbs begin to emerge, remember to fertilise to encourage flowers to bloom. Bulbs such as daffodils are hard to kill, they will even naturalise in the lawns. Pansies are beginning to bloom, they dislike a warm autumn and are now responding to the cold weather. Apply Flourish each week to pansies and other flowering annuals, turning the soil, and lightly lifting the seedlings aerates the root system enabling them to take up the fertiliser. Please don’t be tempted to prune those unsightly roses yet – wait until July or early August.
