From the editor Not that long ago, quite possibly about five years, men’s mental health was never discussed in the public arena.

But, due to some inspiring initiatives, it appears males of all ages – and backgrounds – feel more comfortable sharing their troubles with mates as well as complete strangers.

Quite simply, that would never have occurred before.

At the weekend, while in Port Macquarie, I saw a number of guys converge on the Town Green, welcome each other warmly, and proceeded to stroll along the nearby beach.

I later found out they do it every weekend – just a casual catch-up to lend a sympathetic ear or help if need be.

It conjured up images of Newcastlebased programs such as Making Meditation Mainstream, Meditation for Men, Owen Craigie’s Chase the Energy and many more.

Although different, they all have one thing in common.

They’re designed to break the stigma that talking about personal issues is weak, soft or taboo.

So, even if you’re feeling despaired or all alone, don’t give up on life, there are plenty of groups and organisations to offer a terrific amount of support.

news Newy’s iconic Star Hotel has found a new lease on life It has its own Cold Chisel song and its history boasts a public riot that hit the news on the opposite side of the planet.

Newcastle’s iconic Star Hotel now has a new custodian.

Built in 1925, the current King Street site reopened last month with a fresh lick of paint and a zest for live entertainment.

Licensee Rod Holloway and his business partner Peter Bradbury are hoping to play a vital role in the history of one of Newcastle’s once most talked about venues.

“I think a lot of people think of the riot when they think of The Star but we want people to come in and experience the food and entertainment,” Holloway said.

“Yes it’s got an iconic history, which we can all have a giggle

about, it was what it was, but it’s no different to any other pub that has a history – it has great stories.

“Enjoy the past and understand that’s not the day-to-day culture of the place.”

With many years experience in the hospitality industry, Holloway is returning to his first job after an eight-year hiatus.

“It was time for a change for me,” he said.

“This place has got a great history and it resonated with us.

“We’re hoping to return some of the hotel character to The Star.”

Having closed its doors for 12 months and undertaking extensive renovations, the 150-seat pub will soon re-launch a revamped menu.

“It was quite dark,” Holloway told the Newcastle Weekly.

“We’ve opened it up a little bit and added all new furniture.

“The main difference is we’ll soon be opening the outside area as well.

“We’re getting some outdoor furniture made up now and adding a few lights and then we’ll be able to block off the road and in the next couple of weeks we’ll launch our outdoor area.

“The Star Laneway we’ll call it.”

Celebrating its cheeky history is

included in the pair’s plans.

“We’re planning to get a big mural made up for the back wall to celebrate the pub’s history,” he said.

“It’ll be a mixture of old photos of Newcastle and the pub.

“We probably won’t be getting as loud as the old days, given there’s the apartments nearby, but we’re hoping to get some soloists, duets, and theme days in the laneways.”

news By-election ‘diabolical’ result for Labor, says Fitzgibbon Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon has labelled The Nationals’ big win in the Upper Hunter by-election at the weekend as a “diabolical result for the Labor Party”.

Following the departure of Michael Johnsen, in the midst of sordid allegations which he strongly denied, many experts predicted a close result on Saturday (22 May).

A total of 13 candidates vied for the state crown, including a record number of Independents.

But, Clarence Town’s David Layzell, strongly supported by NSW Deputy Leader John Barilaro throughout the campaign, won convincingly for The Nationals while Labor’s primary vote fell by 7%.

Mr Fitzgibbon said the outcome was a real “wake-up call” for the organisation.

“The Labor brand is in trouble,” the federal member stated.

“And, if we’re not careful, it will go the way of the Kodak brand.

“Our working people walked away from us some time ago and they clearly haven’t come back.

“They won’t return either until we tell them that our main priority as a party is jobs and job security.

“In places like the Hunter region, you can’t have that if you’re not supportive of the coal mining industry. It’s important to so many families and they’re suspicious of a snap. We’ve said we support them, but we’re whispering it.

“We need to be very loud and clear about that. And, it doesn’t help that on the eve of the election, we decided to oppose a gas-fired generator investment in the region.

Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon is concerned following the Upper Hunter by-election.

“People just shake their heads and say ‘well, my scepticism is justified’.”

Mr Fitzgibbon admitted he was now “vulnerable” leading into the next federal election.

“None of us have a mortgage on our electorates,” he said.

“But, you know, on Saturday, we got less than half of the primary vote in places like Singleton that I was getting back in the 2016 election and more than 10% less than I received that disastrous 2019 election.

“So, it’s heading in the wrong

direction. We are facing something that looks a little bit like an existential threat here.

“However, it isn’t too late for us to turn it around. I’m happy to put modesty aside and say that I was very warmly received at the polling booths at the weekend, despite what people were saying about some of our policy positions.

“I believe the Australian people need a Labor government from timeto-time. And, I want to deliver one.”

news Charity creates ‘costumes’ for region’s heroic children A special t-shirt can change a life.

That’s the message behind national charity Supertee’s work.

Since 2018, the group has been helping children who are fighting serious illnesses with a medical garment that’s been disguised as a superhero costume.

Founder Jason Sotiris created the Supertee out of desperation after “one of the darkest moments” he experienced as a parent.

“My daughter Angela was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, she had tumours all over her body,” he said.

“She was one-year-old and what followed was a couple of years of treatment and anything that could go wrong went wrong.

“My little girl got viruses and infections, it was really hard and

quite traumatic to see her go through a lot of pain and suffering and we had no idea of when it would stop.”

The diagnosis rocked their entire world and left Jason searching for ways he could help and that’s when he created the Supertee.

“I noticed how hard it was to change her because she was connected to all these IV drips and and I thought: ‘You know what I am going to try to do something here’ and that started the idea,” he said.

What followed was two years of trial and error before landing on a design that would help kids across the country.

The garment bypasses medical lines and tubes making it easier to change tops and the underarms open easily for temperature checks.

2018 I went back to the hospital that treated my little girl and I held her hand and I held the supertee in the other and we were giving out the supertees for free,” Jason said.

“Now, we’ve helped thousands of kids, but it is nothing in comparison to the amount we could help.”

The charity stopped in at Newcastle last week to pack 300 garments for children at Maitland and John Hunter hospitals.

Thanks to a generous donation from Orica, the organisation has been able to expand from its base in Western Sydney to help children in the region.

Moving forward Jason says they need more help, they’re calling on the community to sponsor a supertee for $45 to donate to a child in hospital.

The members of the Maitland Men’s Shed are all smiles.

After receiving some positive news late last year, courtesy of the 2020 Community Building Partnership Program (CBPP), the organisation finally purchased and installed a new wheelchairaccessible lift at its Jubilee Street premises.

Already, the group boasts an impressive garden; workshop; outdoor barbecue area; two morning tea rooms; woodwork, steelwork and computer/IT sections; boardroom; games room and much more.

“We’re extremely blessed to gain funding, thanks to Maitland state MP Jenny Aitchison,” vice-president Steve O’Brien said at the time.

And, Ms Aitchison attended

the official commissioning of the equipment last Friday morning.

The wheelchair lift was made possible through the NSW Government’s 2020 CBPP that awarded 15 local organisations a share of the $300,000 available to the Maitland community.

The Maitland Men’s Shed was successful in securing $64,261, which provided members with a more inclusive and all ability accessible-friendly space for all ages.

“I am really pleased that I was able to provide funding for such an important and vital group in our community,” Ms Aitchison said.

“This is such a wonderful place for men to get together to work on meaningful projects, share skills and contribute to the wider local community.”

Festival soars to great heights Thousands of eyes turned to the sky on Sunday as some of Australia’s top stunt pilots showed off their skills for the inaugural Up in the Air Festival.

Featuring aerobatic feats diving to within metres of Lake Macquarie’s surface, the event drew an estimated 3,000 people to the Rathmines foreshore.

Lake Macquarie City Council arts, culture and tourism manager Jacqui Hemsley said the aviation-themed event was particularly appropriate for the former RAAF seaplane base.

“The layout of Rathmines Park meant we could safely get the aircraft really close to the crowds, and that really enhances the thrill and the

spectacle of it all,” she said.

“Some of the stunts performed were truly breathtaking.”

The day included displays by Australia’s only Grumman Avenger – the heaviest single-engine aircraft of WWII, a T-28 Trojan military trainer, a Rebel 300 stunt plane and a Pitt Special biplane.

On the ground, classic car displays, kitemaking workshops and roving entertainers kept crowds amused between the airborne stunts.

“We’re proud to bring major events like Up in the Air to western Lake Macquarie,” Ms Hemsley said.

Miles of smiles at launch of inter-generational program For 96-year-old Eve, a special trip to Jesmond Early Education Centre last week was the chance to try something new.

The Anglican Care resident is taking part in the Connecting Generations – Adopt a Grand-buddy Program from the KIDS Foundation, which saw six lucky “oldies” visit a group of four-year-olds.

“It’s just wonderful being among the little ones,” Eve told the Newcastle Weekly.

“We don’t have contact with [kids] anymore unless you have little ones in the family, it’s just so beautiful to see them.

“I think I have had a wonderful life and I am looking forward to any sort of surprises because I think I have seen it all, but you never have – there is always something new.”

Eve joined the program after staff at her aged-care facility suggested she go along.

“I said yes and here I am, it is very exciting,” she said.

“We’re not as capable as we used to be, we can’t move around as much so to come here and see them so free and easy is fantastic.”

Fellow resident Gabrielle was beaming when the children came to her to say hello.

“I think it is wonderful, it’s fulfilling,” she said.

Chief operating officer at the KIDS Foundation Janine Buesnel got a little bit emotional during the event.

“It is delightful to see them build friendships as they go,” she said.

“The program is about interacting with the most vulnerable, the littlies and older people.

Eve and Limah bonding over the fact they both wear glasses.

“The whole purpose is to teach safety, so the kids are a little more risk aware to keep themselves and their friends and family safe and for the older people it helps with their social isolation and their engagement in the community.”

The program was able to come to the city thanks to the support of the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.

An $81,000 funding boost from the group allows the KIDS

Foundation to match 65 early education childhood centres with aged care facilities throughout the state to provide the program free of charge.

The year-long schedule will see the “oldies” and “littlies” visit each other 12 times to help with socialisation, safety education and physical and emotional wellbeing.

news Great Gatsby set to liven Newcastle’s ‘hidden gem’ United Service Club (USC) secretary Jason Gladys is determined to give one of Newcastle’s hidden gems a “new lease of life”.

The beautiful inner-city watering hole, located in Watt Street, boasts an amazing history, housing one of the oldest organisations in Australia.

The USC was founded in 1927 by veterans for veterans in the hope of forming friendships and comradeship between service people in the Hunter.

But, now, the premises, which is “home” to the club, has seen better days – a situation Mr Gladys is keen to rectify, starting with a black-tie Great Gatsby-themed cocktail party on Saturday 29 May to raise funds for some much-needed renovations.

“The building’s 136 years old; and was the original council chambers

for the borough of Newcastle,” he said.

“So, it was purposely-built for that. Unfortunately, it’s just deteriorated over the years.

“It’s basically falling apart.

“If something was broken [in the past], they kind of went ‘yeah, we’ll get to it’, however they never did. It just got progressively worse. A lot of times, it was due to the fact the club had no money.

“Plus, the majority of members had gotten on in age. So, it’s a combination of many things.”

Even though the USC started in 1927, the organisation moved into its current location four years later.

And, at first, it was an extremely popular venue.

“Back in its heyday, it was open seven days a week, from 11am until

“For the past 10-to-15 years, it’s only been Thursdays and Fridays from 4pm – or for functions.

“That was due to a financial constraint; they didn’t have any money. It’s something we’re desperately trying to change.

“We also leased out the dining room to the RSL sub-Branch, but that group is moving out at the end of the month.

“We’re hoping to resurrect the lower level area and the kitchen.

“We need to get it up to safety and compliance, so we can utilise it. That will then give us an extra facility for everyone to use.

“Since I’ve been here, people comment ‘it’s awesome, let’s have a drink. Do you serve food?’

“When you reply ‘no’, they say ‘we’ll grab some dinner and come back’. However, they usually don’t return.”

Mr Gladys said it was difficult to narrow the USC’s priorities, with so much work to be done, but admitted “safety and compliance” was high on the list.

“There are many things to fix, I couldn’t possibly name them all,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.

“But, initially, we have to make sure we have the right smoke detectors in place. Then the meter boxes (electricity) need to be upgraded and brought up to code.”

Mr Gladys expects the weekend extravaganza to showcase the building’s attributes in all its glory.

“We’ve never hosted a fundraiser before,” he said.

“However, we were founded on 19 May 1927, so the event ties into that date.

“We’re promising a good time for all; we’ll have Great Gatsbystyle decorations featuring black, gold and silver, reminiscent of the roaring 20's era. There’ll be large martini glasses, ostrich feathers and much more.

“A number of business partners have given us generous donations for an auction, too.

“People can bid for a corporate Christmas function [here], catered

by Lynch’s Hub; a VIP Supercars food and drinks package for 20 on the main race day – with a terrific view from the balcony; a voucher for eight to take part in a Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service simulator at the Broadmeadow base; and plenty more great items.

“We don’t receive local, state or federal government support – our rates alone sit between $17,000 and $18,000 a year. So, every cent we raise will make a difference.

“Luckily, we’ve got a few car parks here. That and the tenants downstairs – Ramsland Laidler Solicitors – are the only two income streams, which have kept the club afloat for so long.”

Port Stephens’ museum plan moves a step closer A push to develop a regional museum and interpretive centre in Port Stephens has taken a step forward, with a group leading the charge by outing their preferred site.

Fly Point Nelson Bay has been named as the Tomaree Museum Association’s favoured location for a Port Stephens Cultural Centre.

The group, headed by chairman Ian Farnsworth, has unanimously agreed the location would allow a “magnificent integrated community venue”.

“Fly Point stands out because of its accessibility, heritage and environmental value, location, and stakeholder synergies,” he said.

The crown land site is managed by Port Stephens Council and is located between Nelson Bay and Little Beach.

However, Mr Farnsworth and his

10-member committee was quick to point out that other options were still being considered.

“The formal selection process to decide between the remaining candidate sites will form part of a Concept Study we hope to undertake later this year and community consultation is a vital part of the process of site selection,” he said.

“We need to consider a wide range of opinions in making our choices.”

Cultural significance will also remain at the group’s forefront, too.

“We have consulted with Worimi representatives at every opportunity and plan for a significant indigenous contribution in our storytelling and displays,” Mr Farnsworth said.

Port Stephens was once home to the world’s largest oyster farm, the training ground for 20,000 soldiers under General MacArthur, and the site of Bert Hinkler’s crash landing.

The coastal town’s stories and historic richness are the driving force behind Tomaree Museum Association’s push to establish a cultural base.

Landmark exhibition to showcase the Torres Strait Torres Strait Islander and local artist Toby Cedar says an exhibition opening this Sunday “means everything” to his community.

To be staged at the Newcastle Art Gallery, WARWAR: The Art of Torres Strait will be a landmark display featuring works of art that have never been seen outside of the Torres Strait.

“The exhibition explains everything about us from the beginning to now through the artworks,” he said.

“There are artefacts in there from the 1800s that have never been seen before which is amazing and the artworks from the Torres Strait Island community that are coming are second to none, they are just leaders in their own rights.

“I am very proud to be a part of it and to teach my kids and the next generation about our culture.

“It’s also going to be a learning curve for me to see these masks from the 1800s.”

About four years in the making, the exhibition has been developed by the Newcastle Art Gallery in collaboration with highly awarded artist and curator Brian Robinson.

It will include more than 130 artworks drawn from the gallery’s collection, as well as newly created pieces and key loans from other institutions, artists and private collections.

Guest curator Brian Robinson says the exhibition is an important part of the unique Ailan Kustom (island customs) from which wisdom, strength and creativity is drawn from.

“It is through visual art, dance, and song that ancestral stories and legends are maintained and passed on to the younger generation, and

it is important that exhibitions such as this are supported to assist in this preservation,” Mr Robinson said.

The Torres Strait Islander flag was also raised at City Hall for the first time in the building’s history to coincide with the exhibition and will be flown there permanently.

Film festival to wow audiences The Travelling Film Festival (TFF) is returning to Kotara next month.

From Friday 18 to Sunday 20 June, the program will treat patrons to eight award-winning feature films, a highly anticipated Australian documentary and a perfectly crafted First Nations short film.

Headlining the festival is Molly Reynolds’ My Name is Gulpilil (pictured), a new documentary celebrating the personal story and remarkable film career of iconic Australian actor David Gulpilil.

The short film follows Gulpilil’s career from his breakthrough performance in Nicolas Roeg’s Walkabout (1970), and includes such classics as Storm Boy (1976), and Rabbit Proof Fence (2002).

To further celebrate Australian cinema, the festival is proud to

showcase the local premiere of Disclosure by director Michael Bentham.

Inspired by real-life events, this is a thrilling and telling story of parents who will try anything to protect their own when pushed to the edge.

The program will also include Australian short film Bama by filmmaker Jahvis Loveday. The film follows the reflections of a young Aboriginal boy after his first day at school in the big city.

Another festival highlight will be First Cow, an old West tale of love and money set in 19th century Oregon from multiple awardwinning director, Kelly Reichardt, about two unusual partners who open a bakery aiming to make their fortune.

Chloe’s turning Indigenous culture into child’s play Every time she picks up a paintbrush, Newcastle’s Chloe Sumner has one goal in mind – to share her culture with the next generation.

Through her business Barka Arts, the talented 29-year-old has found a new, practical way to teach youngsters about Australia’s First Nations Peoples.

Chloe has created a range of classroom resources – including peg dolls, flash cards, story stones and baby dolls – allowing young learners to have their first taste of indigenous culture.

As an experienced early childhood educator, Chloe says toys are a natural way to introduce cultural acceptance.

“I want to authentically embed Aboriginal culture into daycares and schools,” she said.

“To educate other educators, so that our younger generations are raised with more awareness of Aboriginal culture and more of an acceptance.

“I think there are many educators who want to teach our culture but are worried they might be

disrespectful to Aboriginal people or tokenistic.

“They don’t want to just paint an Aboriginal flag with kids, they want to embed the culture into their programs and into their lives, that’s why I try to create resources that daycare centres would already use as their products.”

Chloe is a proud young indigenous woman from Barkindji and Maliangappa mobs.

Barka Arts is named after the river nearby the land from which her mob originates.

“The Barka River is the indigenous name for the Darling River, near where my family is from,” Chloe said.

Raised in Newcastle, she is currently studying Aboriginal Studies at TAFE NSW. Having experienced racism herself, the motherof-two is passionate about educating the ignorant.

“The early learning years are so important. That’s why it’s so vital to teach Aboriginal culture early on, that way kids might be able to challenge their parents’ thinking as well,” she said.

Breakfast of champions Nothing says ‘weekend’ like brunch! This week, we share recipes for a delicious start to a lazy weekend.

Mushroom breakfast bowl Serves 2 Polenta triangles 400 ml good quality chicken stock (or vegetable stock)

Breakfast bowl 2 bunches of cherry truss tomatoes Butter, for cooking 200g cup mushrooms, thinly sliced

3/4 cup quick polenta, plus extra for dusting

1 tsp fresh thyme leaves

1 tsp fresh thyme leaves

2 free-range eggs

Pinch fresh cracked paper

Pinch kosher salt

1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated

Pinch fresh cracked paper

2 cups baby spinach

For the polenta triangles: line a small baking tray with greaseproof paper.

Place a heavy base medium saucepan on medium heat, add the chicken stock and allow it to come to a simmer. Add the polenta and stir through. Keep stirring while it thickens to prevent lumps from forming.

Add the thyme leaves and pepper.

Once the polenta has turned very thick and changed to a creamy consistency (after 3-5 minutes), remove it from the heat and add the grated parmesan cheese.

Using a spatula, scrape out the polenta from the saucepan and place into the lined baking tray. Spread it out to be approximately 1-2 cm thick. Place in the fridge to set for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Toss the triangles in dried polenta and place them back on the baking tray. Place the tray in the oven to crisp up for 15 minutes. Once crispy, remove from the oven and set aside to serve.

For the breakfast bowl: while the oven is on, place the cherry tomatoes on a small, lined baking tray and place in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until the skins start to split. Once cooked, remove and set aside to serve.

Add a knob of butter to a heavy base frypan on medium heat. Add the mushrooms and the fresh thyme leaves. Sauté until the mushrooms are golden brown, then remove from the pan and set aside.

Boozy brunch For a special occasion brunch you can’t go past the classic mimosa.

Combine two parts champagne or sparkling wine, with one-part fresh orange juice for the perfect breakfast accompaniment.

Cook the eggs to your liking.

If you want to combine your morning caffeine with your cocktails, try an espresso martini. Shake 30ml each of vodka, espresso and Kahlua over ice, strain into a martini glass and top with a few coffee beans. Bellissimo!

Using the same frypan, add the baby spinach and allow it to wilt down. It doesn’t take long (about 1 minute), so keep an eye on it. Remove and set aside.

Groundwork Fitness advertising moment

Karl Versteeg’s uplifting Groundwork pays off If Karl can do it, so can you.

That’s the motto of Carringtonbased gym Groundwork Fitness which opened late last year.

Owner Karl Versteeg was born with Cerebral Palsy and since he was 14, he has participated in weight training to help with his movement.

After living in Sydney, Karl, his wife Sal and daughter Poppy moved to Newcastle in 2015, where he continued his regime.

“Strength training has basically kept me upright – if I didn’t squat and deadlift, I’d be either in a wheelchair or finding it very difficult to walk,” he said.

“Never has this been more highlighted to me than when I built Groundwork with my Dad. “For four months I didn’t train, and I felt my movement becoming

more and more restricted until I started training again.”

He opened the gym to create a space for older people to train.

“That’s why we don’t have mirrors or loud music and we have a smaller membership so we can really concentrate and look after our members,” he explained.

“I wanted a gym where I’d want to train at – not a big box gym where it’s this churn and burn mentality.

“Groundwork is completely different to this; I can’t stress enough that our environment is one of inclusion.

“We don’t have contracts or cancellation fees. My idea is that we teach you the lift as a skill so you can take it wherever you want to.”

Since opening in December, Karl has received incredible feedback.

“Every member is seeing the results that weight training can achieve in a short time,” he said.

The gym offers weight training and conditioning with specially made equipment.

In the future, Karl is planning to expand by adding movement classes for over 50’s.

He hopes his members can come along to the gym and gain more than just some exercise.

“After each session, people can grab a coffee and have

conversations with other members,” he said.

“This way they have the social interaction and physical conditioning that can help their mental health.”

Be wise, make sure you place your rose orders early Usually at this time of year, enquiries begin about roses – that is, selection of varieties, when to prune and feed.

Roses should be planted out during June when they are dormant. New roses dug too early can suffer from die back, the fungal disease which affects the stems, causing them to brown-off.

It is unwise to feed new roses at planting time as when, being released from their dormant state, they send down fine new roots, which will be burnt by fertiliser.

Ideally, newly-planted roses could be planted in a good rose compost, especially those being grown in containers.

Create a mound in the planting hole to spread the root system over before filling the hole.

Daily watering is essential to encourage new growth - failure to do so will stunt it.

I am often asked when to transplant existing roses, remembering roses like full sun. I consider

when pruning, which could be during July or August (in colder areas), is the best time to move established plants.

If the root system is badly damaged, it will be wise to prune off top growth equally.

When pruning, spray with Lime Sulphur, feeding each rose with a bucketful of poultry manure, followed three weeks later by a handful of rose food.

This applies to ground grown roses – potted plants should be fed with a slow release fertiliser.

I believe there will be a shortage of roses this year so it may be wise to place orders early.

Colour and fragrance often influence choices, reds generally have the most perfume and the old favourites definitely still reign supreme – Mr Lincoln, Kentucky Derby, Oklahoma and Papa Meilland are often sought after.

But, my favourite is still City of Newcastle which was cultivated for the City’s bi-centenary.

• Divide strawberries.

• Disbud Japonica camellias where buds don’t open to full bloom – this simply means taking off multiple buds leaving just one or two.

• Plant out remaining spring bulbs, especially those in the fridge crisper and feed with bulb food.

Tim Neve Warehouse an interior designer’s dream Novocastrian Tim Neve boasts a flair for interior design.

The passionate local has been working in the industry for more than a decade after starting out in theatre and graphic design.

Some of his biggest projects have included working on The Beach Hotel in Merewether, a pop-up open house at The Station and creating his own textiles range.

However, recently, Tim has taken

his work another step forward by opening the Tim Neve Warehouse.

Located in Maryville, he says it’s a hidden gem within the Hunter.

“It’s so nice to have space where I can move large pieces of furniture around to create different looks and have that creative freedom I have always wanted in a space,” he said.

“Opening the warehouse was quite quick because I do come from a commercial interior design background, I was in my element trying to work out how to fit out the space.

“We’re slowly being found by the local community – it is a destination to be discovered.”

Featuring a variety of furniture, homewares and accessories alongside expert feedback from Tim, the location is a one-stop shop for people who are interested in interior design.

He adds it made sense to open the warehouse during the pandemic.

“It was an odd time for everybody but what I discovered was that everyone was stuck at home,” he explained.

“The lack of travel and the fact that

everyone was stuck in the four walls around them, meant everyone started noticing what they needed to do around their house.

“The interior design industry has [benefitted] from the pandemic because everyone has wanted a change to make them feel more comfortable in their homes.”

The warehouse will also be “taken over” once a month by Design School students as part of their interior design course.

The school was founded by former The Block contestant Jenna Denstan.

“I am so excited to be able to bring their course to Newcastle,” Tim said.

“I have admired Jenna and her course from afar for many years.”

Moving forward, Tim says he has big plans for the future.

“I have plenty of aspirations and dreams,” he said.

“In the short term I will be working to have some more bed linen on offer and some fresh new colour schemes for spring and summer.”

Follow the ripple, says local renovator Newcastle-based renovator Werine Erasmus says despite the spike in house prices, there are still smart ways buyers and sellers can make their real estate dollar stretch further.

In what is a record-breaking market, small changes for little cost could be worth thousands to your bottom line, she says.

The self-taught "flipper", who has renovated more than 20 homes in 19 years, says success in a tight market comes down to making clever decisions about a property.

“I’m in the market for another home myself now, so I will be looking at the ripple effect,” she says.

“That means suburbs that have already boomed and are spoken about, I would look at its neighbour, the next suburb over.

“I’m personally going to look at Kurri Kurri.

“It’s a bit further out but you now have Teralba and Booragal already booming, you’ve had Speers Point already boom, so I’d look a little further out.”

Werine usually looks for properties to flip at the same entry level price as a first home buyer, under $600,000.

“One of the reasons is that stamp duty is manageable at that price,” she says.

Her sage advice therefore begins with planning.

“Research – that’s number one,” she says.

“Houses don’t come with prices at the moment.

“You’ve got to go in with your own price which means you’ve got to do your research prior.

“You can’t rely on what the real estate agent tells you it is worth, the market is too hot and even they don’t know for sure what the prices are at the moment.”

For maximum return on a property, Werine advises looking for ways to add value to an existing address.

“If you don’t have a big budget go for something that’s structurally sound,” she says.

“Steer away from something that needs too much work.

“When you renovate you always want a $2 return for every $1 you spend.”

Her comments come as property data group CoreLogic announce Australia’s real estate market has broken a new record.

“The Australian dwelling market has reached fresh record highs for the past four months,” CoreLogic’s head of research Eliza Owen says.

“The end of April marked the first time the total value of Australian housing broke the $8 trillion dollar mark.

“This puts Australian residential property at around four times the size of Australian GDP, and around $1 trillion more than the combined value of the ASX, superannuation and commercial real estate stock combined.”

CoreLogic data shows in the three months to April, national home values rose 6.8%, the highest quarterly dwelling growth rate since December 1988.

Homes are being sold faster than they have in almost 20 years too according to CoreLogic data, which found between January and April 2021, the average time a house was on the market in Australia was 29 days, the lowest level since October 2003.

“The last house I sold a few weeks ago was in Booragal,” Werine says.

Thursday, and on the Friday I had three offers.

“The market is very hot at the moment and people feel they just need to buy a home to get into the market.”

Werine says the sale of her

latest project came down to two buyers, both young pregnant couples wanting a home before the birth of their baby.

“It’s tough for first home buyers right now, I really feel for them.”

My favourite things FAMILY AND FRIENDS I’m so lucky to have such a wonderful family and amazing friends. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I love spending time with my two young nephews and watching them grow up… very fast. Most of my close friends have young families as well which I have a lot of fun with. It’s great to be able to be the “fun uncle” – without the responsibility.

ANIMALS For as a long as I can remember, I’ve always loved animals, and I love a good nature doco. I’m more of a dog person, than a cat person. My brothers were involved in greyhounds, so we’ve adopted a few over the years! I think they’re the most beautiful dogs. My mum also had a gorgeous rescue Staffy. They really bring so much joy.

NBN NEWS JOURNALIST AND PRESENTER

Born and raised in Newcastle, Tyson Cottrill knew he wanted to be a journalist from an early age. He began his career at NBN News in Newcastle, and after stints at Nine News in Sydney and on the Gold Coast and Brisbane, Tyson returned home in 2017. Over the years he’s interviewed Prime Ministers, Premiers, celebrities and sporting stars, along with many interesting and inspiring locals. As well as regularly presenting the 6pm news, Tyson is also Nine NBN’s chief court reporter. During the week you can usually find him at one of the Hunter’s many court houses, and on the weekends at one of his favourite cafés in Newcastle.

READING When I get time after work or on the weekends, I love to read. I mainly enjoy autobiographies. Each offers their own unique, interesting story and I find them so insightful in their own way. Call me old fashioned, but I’m not a massive fan of ‘e-books’ either – give me a good paperback any day.

This one is very much on my ‘re’ to do list. I played tennis from around the age of 7, up until my late teens. I was lucky enough to see plenty of interesting places across the country and meet some amazing people – some of whom I’m still friends today.

I haven’t picked up a racquet in many years, disappointingly, but I promise myself I will. In the meantime, I still enjoy watching it on TV.

COFFEE I love a good coffee and can’t start my morning without one. I probably drink way too many cups (at least three of four) a day, but when there are so many outstanding cafes around Newcastle, who can blame me, right?
