From the editor Welcome to my first “official” edition as editor of the Newcastle Weekly.

I’d like to thank my predecessor Ben Murphy for his commitment and dedication to the publication over the past few years.

He’s certainly left big shoes to fill.

But, I’m confident we can do him, as well as the Hunter community, proud as we enter a new era.

I happily link up with the Newcastle Weekly team – Elizabeth, Rebecca and Kath – after three decades with Rural Press, Fairfax, Nine and ACM (all one and the same, apart from the name), including my recent stint as Upper Hunter group editor.

I started as a cadet for the Port News, and served as a court reporter, entertainment writer, sports editor and production editor during my time there.

My decision to part ways with the company was difficult, however I felt ACM had lost touch with the communities it was there to serve, especially during COVID-19.

That’s why it’s so refreshing to be a part of the dynamic crew at the Newcastle Weekly.

The heart of the community and telling good-news stories are its bread and butter. So, I hope you continue to join us on this incredible journey, both in print and online.

news Newcastle’s gin tastes success after being awarded gold on global stage Newcastle has once again hit the international stage, taking home gold at the recent World Gin Awards.

In its inaugural global awards competition Earp Distilling Co won four medals, less than 12 months after opening its doors to the public.

The annual event took entries from several countries including Belgium, Scotland, Canada, Hungary, Argentina, Brazil, Italy and the United Kingdom.

More than 150 judges awarded entries in 11 different categories including London dry gin, navy gin, flavoured gin, compound gin and classic gin.

The juniper berry-based alcoholic beverage was then judged on both its design and taste.

Earp Distilling Co marketing manager Josh Earp said the Carrington-based, family-owned business was thrilled to be recognised in a global capacity.

“This is the first time we’ve entered the World Gin Awards,” he said.

“To our surprise and delight we [won] four medals – that’s pretty amazing.”

The accolade, Josh says, is “equal to only one other Australian distillery”.

Josh said the team learned of its win via a live stream from London.

“Alarms were set for the 3am online live stream,” he said. “Newcastle’s own distillery is now winning gold on the world stage, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

Earp Distillery won a gold medal for its Just Juniper label which the judges said was “predominantly citrus-forward on the palate with some ginger to follow…well-balanced and harmonious”.

The group’s No.8 Dry Gin won a silver medal with judges complimenting its “interesting confectionery flavours, like cherry and mint chewing gum”.

Winning a silver medal in the matured gin category, Earp Distilling’s Barrel Aged Portside Gin was described by judges as having “some

strong wood, and a kick, [with] some fruit sweetness on the finish”.

In the navy strength gin category, the team won bronze for its Portside Gin with judges noting: “On the nose there is a nice freshness, with a touch of lemon sherbet citrus and juniper.

The sherbet notes are right up front on the palate, aided by an alcohol heat tingle, with some lemon myrtle as a herbal element”.

news PM’s hung Keith Pitt out to dry on PEP 11: Labor Labor leader Anthony Albanese and Newcastle federal politician Pat Conroy believe Prime Minister Scott Morrison has hung Keith Pitt “out to dry” on the controversial PEP 11 extension.

After staunch opposition from Hunter communities and businesses, as well as pressure from Labor, the PM – who visited the region on Thursday 4 March – finally admitted he didn’t support increasing the Petroleum Exploration Permit 11 (PEP 11).

“Scott Morrison’s shaky coalition with the Nationals has been tested yet again with the Prime Minister staying silent on PEP 11 [until last week],” Mr Albanese said.

“Advent Energy’s application would allow oil and gas exploration drilling off the NSW coast from Port

Stephens, Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney.

“Under the company’s proposal thousands of local jobs in hospitality, tourism, recreational and commercial fishing would be jeopardised.

“Scott Morrison’s backdown is in stark contrast to recent comments from the Minister for Resources, who was recently defending the proposal by saying ‘any rig is unlikely to be visible from the coast’.

“Unlike the Morrison government, Labor’s position on this proposal has been crystal clear.

“PEP 11 doesn’t make sense from an economic, environmental or energy perspective.”

Labor has been consulting with the Surfrider Foundation, Save Our Coast, other advocacy groups and the broader community.

Shortland MP Mr Conroy congratulated them on their fierce advocacy in protecting their region.

“We support new energy and resources projects where they make sense, but this was always a dumb idea,” he said.

“A broad spectrum of people across the community knew it, it’s just a shame it took Scott Morrison so long to realise it.

“Rest assured, Matt Thistlethwaite, Emma McBride, Meryl Swanson, Sharon Claydon and the entire Labor

team will not rest until this bad idea is 100% dead and buried.

“The Labor party is against it; the community is against it; and the NSW Government is against it.

“With his PM now joining the ranks of those against the application, is Keith Pitt still ‘concerned about some of the exaggerated claims being made by groups who are opposed to the permit?’

“Either Keith Pitt is wrong, or the Prime Minister is.”

news Inspirational youngster Josh proves a cut above the rest

Josh Arens ahead of the chop.

Josh Arens is determined to make a difference in the world.

After losing his fellow sibling Sam to cancer in 2019, the 11-yearold has decided to cut his very long blond hair to raise much-needed funds for the World’s Greatest Shave.

That will take place tomorrow (Friday 12 March).

But, in the meantime, he’s well on his way to reaching his goal of $25,000.

So far, Josh has amassed more than $15,000 and his crusade shows no signs of slowing down in the coming days.

On 1 March, the inspirational youngster set up a dais – for his lolly guessing competition – at a venue very close to his heart, Upper Reserve, the home of the Wallsend Touch Association.

“His dad, Barry, tried to keep some semblance of ‘normality’ and fitness.

“But, with me in hospital most of the time with Sam, Josh had to become a ‘sideline kid’ to maintain that routine.

“He turns 12 this year and I’ve just registered him to join our team, Don’t Touch Me There, in F grade.

“Our side and the Wallsend Touch Association have been a welcoming and supportive weekly destination for Josh through some pretty tough times.

“We’re also thankful for the amazing community response to his Facebook campaign.”

Josh returned to the Lewis Street clubhouse this week to continue his fundraising quest, too.

“We’re more than delighted to help him,” Wallsend Touch Association admin officer Kellie Johnston said.

“In fact, it was great to see him play his first senior game in round one of our autumn comp [last week].

“He’s sat on the sideline so patiently, itching to get out there with his family for years.

“Josh looked so happy out there.

“He’s an impressive young man – and we are pleased to support him as much as we can.

“That’s what this club is all about.”

news Meg Purser awarded Charlestown Woman of the Year

Charlestown Woman of the Year Meg Purser.

The late Meg Purser’s community spirit and incredible work was honoured this week when she was named 2021 Charlestown Woman of the Year.

Meg’s parents, Bob and Noelene Purser, accepted the award on International Women’s Day (Monday 8 March) at a ceremony at the Warners Bay Rotunda.

Meg died from breast cancer earlier this year on 14 January, she was nominated for the award by her colleague and friend Craig Eardley. “[Meg] was an unsung community hero who worked behind the scenes to make things happen for organisations and the community,” Craig said.

“Her work literally helped to save lives and make organisations successful. She mentored many PR graduates, particularly young women, and business people.

“Meg gave her time and expertise to so many local charities and community organisations.”

Craig added Meg served on many committees and boards and was always a person who “rolled up her sleeves and got the job done”.

“Meg lit up a room, connected people and made people believe in themselves and feel important,” he said.

As managing director of Purser Corporate Communication Meg had a huge impact on the community.

Gracyn Endacott, who works for the company, says she is incredibly proud of Meg and the work she did throughout her life.

“I think it is a huge honour for someone as powerful and influential as Meg to be given this award,” she said.

“I am so proud of her and grateful for what she has done.

“Every day was different, to work under Meg Purser was incredible, I am forever grateful for what she taught me and the foundations she left me to go on in my career.

“We all miss her so much.”

Charlestown state MP Jodie Harrison believes Meg is very deserving of the award.

“Meg was not just a highly skilled communications and public relations expert, she was someone who gave her time and shared her skills for the benefit of the broader community and organisations such as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation and the domestic violence support charity Got Your Back Sista,” she said.

“I cannot think of a more appropriate recipient this year for this award.”

Police officer’s incredible commitment acknowledged The incredible work of Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson has been recognised after the Port Stephens Hunter Police District dedicated a multi-purpose training room in his honour.

Sergeant Richardson was killed five years ago when the police car he was driving crashed into a tree on Lovedale Road, Allandale.

On Saturday 5 March 2016, he had been driving to assist colleagues who were engaged in a pursuit. He was the only person in the car.

and loved ones for the dedication ceremony at Raymond Terrace Police Station on Friday 5 March.

Assistant Commissioner Mitchell said Sergeant Richardson’s devotion to his community was second to none and added the ceremony indicated the high regard his fellow officers held him in.

“Geoff was a hard-working and highly respected police officer,” he said.

“He was committed to his job, committed to his mates, and committed to the community he served.

“We are one big policing family, and this is another way we can remember ‘Richo’ and his service to the Port Stephens community.”

Sergeant Richardson had a very decorated career.

He graduated from the NSW Police Academy in 1998, and went on to serve at Campbelltown Local Area Command as a Constable until 2005.

During his 18-year policing

career, he served at Cobar, Central Hunter and Lake Macquarie, before returning to the Port Stephens Local Area Command in 2015.

Sergeant Richardson was the recipient of a number of awards, including a Region Commander’s Commendation for Bravery, and a posthumous Commissioner’s Commendation for Service.

Kotara Bears in love with new coaching partnership Loved-up Kotara Bears couple Dylan McInherny and Jacqui Moriarty are hoping their winning partnership off the paddock flows into on-field triumphs for the club, too.

The pair, who’ll tie the knot next month after almost a decade together, will coach the organisation’s men’s and women’s (league tag) teams respectively in the 2021 Newcastle and Hunter Community Rugby League (NHCRL) competition.

McInherney led the Bears to a grand final appearance in 2020, while Moriarty savoured victory as a member of the South Newcastle Lions in the Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL) decider.

“In my first year [here], we were rolled in the finale and, unfortunately, history repeated itself last season,” he said.

“We lost to the Kearsley Crushers by four points, I think.

“But, NHCRL is fairly strong – and was even more so in 2020. A lot of guys returned to play for their junior clubs, due to the various changes brought about by COVID-19.

“Fingers crossed we can get the chocolates this time around.”

As for Moriarty, the Lions accounted for the Maitland Pickers to cap off the perfect “blues tag” year.

“We enjoyed a very successful season at Souths,” she said.

“The girls went undefeated, winning the grand final in the process. I couldn’t have asked for more than that.

“However, there’s been a big change in structure over at South Newcastle; they’ve moved into women’s tackle [this year] as opposed

to league tag. That’s the main reason for my shift to Kotara.

“Being 54kg and a high school teacher, I’m not really interested in the tackle side of things.

“Plus, I think the timing was right to come over – and challenge myself as a coach and player.

“It will be good to be at the same club as Dylan, too. We were kind of going our separate ways every weekend last season.

“So, it’ll be a nice change.”

Their commitment to the Bears will be put on hold, somewhat, when McInherny and Moriarty exchange vows on 10 April.

“As luck would have it, our wedding day coincides with the first round of the comp,” he said.

“Then we’re darting off on our honeymoon, so we’ll probably miss the opening three weeks.

“To be honest, Jacqui’s probably got more of an idea [about league] than me,” he added with a laugh.

“However, I’m looking forward to

being with her, at the club, this year.

“Hopefully, we can find some success together on the field because off the field, we will be.”

And, as for their 2021 aspirations, apart from a “happily ever after”, McInherny and Moriarty both share similar hopes for the Bears.

“I’ve got the core squad from last season, so making the semis is our first goal,” he said.

“We’ve had a good run, but we can’t go into 2021 expecting to make the grand finals like the past couple of years.

“It will take a lot of hard work.

“Obviously, I’d love to see the boys go one better than 2020.

“But, it’s difficult to tell how strong the opposition will be. There are still numerous unknowns at this stage.

“However, one thing about this comp, you know there’s so many good teams out there.

“We’ll just concentrate on our own game and hope everything falls into place.”

McInherny and Moriarity will exchange vows on 10 April.

Moriarty also faces “a bit of uncertainty”, too, with Kotara making its debut in the women’s league tag format.

“Due to the changes, I’m expecting a few sides to drop back with the emergence of tackle in the Real NRL comp, like Central,” she said.

“So, I’m not certain what the quality of the other teams will be like.

“Our aim is to reach the semis.

“I’ve been very successful at Souths; it would be nice to continue that run with the Bears.

“And, I’m confident we can.

“But, it’s also about teaching the girls who haven’t played before some skills – and make sure they’re enjoying the game as well.”

Newcastle Basketball breaking junior records It’s been home to the likes of NBA star Ben Simmons, Olympian Katie Rae-Ebzery and NBL player Kouat Noi, and now an influx of hopeful young athletes have joined the ranks.

Newcastle is experiencing a resurgence in junior basketball.

Once the birthplace of the NBL, the city now boasts the largest enrolment numbers of junior basketballers in the country, with its Aussie Hoops program topping the table in 2020.

Following the release of the 2020 Term 4 figures, Newcastle Basketball manager Martin McLean says the sport’s popularity is reminiscent of its golden era in the early 1990s.

“I don’t know exact figures from that time but I do know that our junior development programs have gone ballistic,” he said.

“We’re breaking all our records. This is the biggest basketball has ever been in Newcastle.”

Basketball Australia released its participation numbers for the national Aussie Hoops program this month, with Newcastle listed as number one.

Aussie Hoops is Basketball Australia’s skills-based program introducing five to 10-year-olds to the sport.

Of the 2,244 Australian children enrolled in the program during Term 4, 2020, Newcastle made up almost 15 per cent, with 335 enrolments.

Term One enrolment numbers for 2021 are already 373, a new personal best for the city.

For three to five-year-olds, the program is modified and referred to as Mini Hoops.

Both feed into other junior programs including winter and summer competitions, as well as the Newcastle Academy and

Hunters representative teams.

“We are one of the largest Sporting Schools providers at the moment as well, and our holiday camps are going nuts at the moment,” Mr McLean said.

So, why the renewed interest in a sport that has two teams with five players each running, dribbling and passing a leatherclad ball the length of a court with the objective of shooting it through a hoop, with or without the use of a backboard?

“COVID, to some extent, locked people away and they’re now bursting at the seams to get out and play sport again,” Mr McLean added.

“Active Kids vouchers also brought a lot more people to the sport, and I think we got ourselves organised postlockdown pretty quickly, so we captured those kids looking to do something active pretty quick.

“Parents can also park out the front and walk straight through the front door come rain, hail or shine.

“It’s held at the same place, same program, regular times, and the weather doesn’t change anything – other than the leaking roof.”

While the sport is booming, the Broadmeadow stadium, built in 1969, is not faring quite so well.

According to Mr McLean, its days are numbered.

“There have been several addons to the building since then,” he said.

“The NBL league in itself was started right here in the office upstairs.

“But there are six courts here and no two courts are the same size, and, when it rains, it rains inside too.”

For the former steel city, the timing of a resurgence in junior

basketball couldn’t be better, with a new 10-court, 3,500-seat stadium expected to start construction in Hillsborough later this year.

“It will fit in with the growth of this sport,” Mr McLean said.

“I think you build it, and they’ll come, even more of them. The new stadium will allow us to reduce the number of later time slots [of games] and I think we’ll fill it.

“It’s a brand new, cleaner environment that people can come and play in, and a much friendlier facility – by that, I mean no leaks or dust.”

The plethora of skilled junior players in Newcastle also deserve a new home-base, Mr McLean said.

“We’ve got some really talented kids coming through, some who will follow the path to NBL or WNBL and make Australian teams for sure and we’re quietly confident that we’ll continue that flow of talented youngsters,” he added.

“There aren’t many associations that can boast multiple athletes at the [Basketball Australia] Centre of Excellence like we can, or multiple players in Australian teams, like Cassidy [McLean] and Lara [McSpadden], who grew up here playing juniors together.

“At the last Under 14 Nationals, we had both our teams in the top 10 teams in the country,” he said.

“Things are going well.”

Securing a “legend of the sport” within its payroll has also helped Newcastle cement its reputation as one of the best junior clubs in the country, Mr McLean admitted.

“Tim Mallon, who is highly regarded as one of the best coaches in the country, is our director of coaching,” he said.

“That helps us. Tim is focused on development, he is all about the kids and about wanting to see them develop further and help them achieve their dreams.”

Mr McLean said that, with a strong coaching team, a new modern facility and record enrolment numbers, there was just one more milestone to achieve.

“The goal is to get our own WNBL team once we’re settled into our new stadium,” he said.

“That’s why we built a stadium this size.

“That will be exciting, not only for the basketball community but for the whole city of Newcastle.”

Colourful mural to break down barriers A mural painting event in Islington this weekend will aim to empower those living with a disability and create community conversation.

The Stand Up, Speak Up activity is being delivered by Community Disability Hunter Alliance (CDAH) as part of City of Newcastle’s Count Us In festival.

CDAH member Ainslie Whitburn says the mural will promote inclusion and help to break down barriers.

“It’s saying ‘yes, we have a disability’ but we’re also similar to people without disabilities,” she told Newcastle Weekly.

“We’ve got the same interests, the same goals and aspirations.

“However, the ‘Welcome to our World’ [slogan] is because there are some things that we need a little bit of help or support with. So, it’s about getting the community down here and getting involved.”

The mural, which is being painted on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 March, will be overseen by UP&UP duo Shane Kennedy and Faith Curtis.

Working under the banner of Unique People, Unique Promise, the creatives foster a powerful sense of community through their graffiti, street art and music.

“We have formed a long-term relationship with CDAH, and I guess it all started from doing a hip-hop track with them a few years ago,” Ms Curtis said.

“From that experience, we made a few friends and kept in contact.

“We’re always looking for different opportunities to paint street art, particularly with a message, and it’s great that this is coinciding with the Count Us In festival.

“We were brainstorming ideas for the mural since before COVID – it’s been a long process, so we’re all really excited to get it done.”

Apart from the mural event, Count Us In also includes a suite of other activities such as a Goal Ball day, which will be hosted by former Australian Paralympians; immersive art and dance experiences; and activations focused on education and awareness, exploring topics like discrimination in the workplace.

The mural will be painted in three sessions across the two days; 10am to 11am, 12pm to 1pm, and 1.30pm to 2.30pm at 194 Maitland Road, Islington. Bookings required.

Persian New Year adds colour to celebrations New Year celebrations are still continuing in Newcastle.

On Sunday 14 March, the Iranian Community will come together in Civic Park to celebrate Persian New Year.

Called ‘Nowruz’ in Farsi (Iran’s national language), the title is a compound word that translates to ‘new day’. The event also marks the first day of spring in Iran and is celebrated by more than 100 million people worldwide.

President of the Australian Iranian Community of Newcastle, Dr Mojgan Habibi, explained that Nowruz has a 3,000-year history that symbolizes hope and resilience.

She adds for Iranians the event is “similar to Christmas”.

“A lot of religious people don’t celebrate it, it’s more cultural, and historical,” Dr Habibi said.

“Like gingerbread for Westerners, we make chickpea and rice cookies, especially for the new year and offer it to everyone.

“Preparation for the new year is really important for us, we have to clean up the house beforehand, and you must do it with all of the family [together].

“For 13 days after Nowruz, we go and visit our relatives and friends.

“During these 13 days, we [return] to nature and celebrate to have good luck for the rest of the year.”

The “joyful” event on Sunday is set to feature a plethora of activities, including 25 stalls, food, music, special calligraphy, and dance workshops.

Dr Habibi added the past year has been “really tough” for Newcastle’s Iranians and the Nowruz celebrations would be a special day for the community.

Live music’s timely return to the Valley Since tours and festivals in the Hunter Valley’s popular wine region were cancelled due to the pandemic in March 2020, the Australian music industry has suffered in silence.

But now, 12 months on, the region is abuzz following the news live tunes will once again course through the grapevines.

Bimbadgen Estate will be one of the first to kickstart the revival, hosting the inaugural Cellar Door Series on Saturday 20 March.

The series, from the creators of A Day on the Green, will be launched by talented singer-songwriter Ben Folds.

General manager of Bimbadgen Estate Belinda Stapleton, who has worked in the valley’s wine industry on-and-off since the early 2000s, said the return of live music to the

region was a promising sign.

“Bimbadgen is usually host to four or five concerts a year within the A Day on the Green series,” she said.

“These concerts generally attract 10,000 people so not being able to have events and concerts for a year has been a huge blow for our business as well as the region.

“Bringing back concerts to the Hunter region provides a beacon of hope that regional tourism and the event industry are slowly getting back on track.

“It’s exciting for our promoters to be returning to the Hunter and it’s exciting for our customers to get to enjoy outdoor events in a COVIDSafe environment.”

SURFEBRUARY AMBASSADOR

Xavier Neil is not your average 10-year-old. The youngster has been raising funds for the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse for the last two years through his passion project Good X Karma and SurFebruary – an initiative that encourages participants to catch a wave a day while fundraising for the cancer treatment centre. In 2021 Xav raised almost $14,000 during his campaign and his team, SurFeb Newy, reached a total of $75,000.

Through Good X Karma, Xav, with the help of his mum Emma and dad Ben, sells handmade soaps and lip balms and donates the proceeds to the Lifehouse. Xav says he is so passionate about donating money because he knows it has a “ripple effect” and will help the world move a step closer to defeating cancer.

One of my most favourite things in the whole wide world is chocolate. I like to drink a white hot chocolate from Praise Joe and devour Turkish Delight. Close second is a beef burrito from the best Mexican restaurant in Newcastle, Antojitos.

Dad had a campervan fit out for us to take trips in and I love it. Being in the van is cool because its relaxing and an adventure at the same time. We see some cool places, people and animals. My favourite place to stay is Seals Rocks and marshmallows are the best camp food.

My dog Loki is a Siberian Husky. Even though he is hairy and licks a lot, he is my best friend. I have taught him to pull me whilst I am on my scooter, just like the dogs do in the snow with sleds. We lost my other best friend Lara last year.

MY FAMILY I am super lucky to have a big family of grandparents and cousins that I love heaps. But I am mostly grateful to have Mum and Dad look after me and they are always there for me.
