This week...
From the editor I’m sure we all thought, or at least hoped, that the start of 2021 would be slightly less crazy after the past year. However, US officials have opened domestic terrorism investigations into the Donald Trump supporters who stormed Capitol Hill in Washington last week. It was surreal watching thousands of demonstrators march into the Capitol, attacking police officers, stealing computers, and smashing windows in the process. Trump’s social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook were subsequently suspended, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned of the possibility for armed protests in all 50 state capitals ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration on 20 January. Thankfully, the first two weeks of the new year have been far less chaotic in Australia. However, there is still a long way for us to go in terms of stamping out racism, following allegations of abuse from a few supporters during the Third Test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Closer to home, this week’s cover promotes a leap of faith from producer Daniel Stoddart and his wife Hayley. The couple has bought their first commercial premises for the Stoddart Entertainment Group in a positive move for the region’s performing arts.

news Mum’s plea: I just want my Jayden home The mother of missing Newcastle man Jayden Penno-Tompsett recently issued a fresh plea for answers on the third anniversary of her son’s baffling disappearance. Speaking on new true crime podcast The Missing Files last month, an emotional Rachel Penno spoke of her torment at the ongoing lack of information surrounding her youngster’s case. She’s now called for a coronial inquest into the matter. Jayden, 22, was on a road trip from Newcastle to Cairns on New Year’s Eve in 2017 when he reportedly ran into bushland at Charters Towers after an argument with a travelling partner – and was never seen again. In the most comprehensive public examination of the case yet, The Missing Files podcast speaks with his family, some of Jayden’s

closest mates and seasoned police officers in a bid to uncover new leads in the probe. It also features former Griffith Local Area Commander Detective Superintendent Michael Rowan, actor and video producer Adam Drummond, investigative journalist Dan Johns and TV and film editor Matt Olsen. In episode one of the four-part series, Ms Penno spoke of the pain she had endured since her son’s disappearance and urged authorities to look more closely at a mysterious property near where Jayden disappeared on the outskirts of Charters Towers. “There’s a house there – and it needs to be searched but nothing has been done,” she said. Ms Penno said that she still felt anger towards Jayden’s travelling companion, too.
“Jayden wasn’t reported missing until 4 January, 2018, four days after he and his friend parted ways,” she explained. “There’s been so many different things said. “It’s so difficult to hear that and I just want my boy home.” Ms Penno said the Christmas period, and the anniversary of Jayden’s disappearance, was a particularly difficult time. Other theories examined by the podcast include speculation he was killed by a bikie gang over drug debt; committed suicide in a remote location; changed identities and fled to start a new life; or was the victim of a roaming serial killer on the notorious Flinders Highway, colloquially known as the “Highway Of Death”. Tender awarded for ocean baths Work on the much-loved Newcastle Ocean Baths pool upgrade is set to begin this year, according to City of Newcastle. Following an official tender process, GHD has been named as the principal design consultant, with Stage 1 to get underway soon. The slated transformation is a staged project that will begin with the restoration of the pool and its promenades, while consultation and assessments continue for the upper concourse and pavilion. The council has committed to fully-fund the renewal of the baths, with the $9.5 million proceeds from the sale of three council-owned buildings, including the Frederick Ash Building, directed towards the venture. Additional money will also come from City of Newcastle. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said GHD was primed to complete final site investigations before developing initial options and concept designs for the pools and promenade for community feedback. “Engagement with the Newcastle Ocean
Baths Community Reference Group and broader public is an important aspect of revitalising this iconic community asset,” she explained. “Our discussions to date have provided an insight into what the community values most about the pools, such as retaining the iconic boardwalk and improving accessibility. “This will help inform the upcoming design process, with initial concepts to be provided to the Newcastle Ocean Baths Community Reference Group for feedback. “This will be followed by a detailed design process, which is expected to be completed by April, with construction works scheduled to begin in the new financial year following further community consultation.” Stage 2 of the project will address the renewal of the pavilions and surrounding upper level public domain space. A multi-criteria needs analysis is expected to be undertaken on the site to guide conversations with the community and ensure the upgrade meets the needs of future generations. “Newcastle Ocean Baths is treasured by our

community, which is why we are moving ahead with the upgrades to the pools while continuing conversations with residents to ensure they have input into the improvements to the iconic pavilions,” Cr Nelmes said. “Prioritising a refurbishment of the pools and their surrounds will allow us to improve the site’s safety and accessibility while ensuring adequate time to work with the community on a plan for the pavilion that respects the heritage and integrity of the site.”

one Hunter producer faced the challenge head on. In the midst of lockdown, Novocastrians Daniel and Hayley Stoddart took the ultimate leap of faith in the industry they love, purchasing their first commercial premises for the Stoddart Entertainment Group. They acquired an expansive, decommissioned warehouse in Fern Street, Islington, which was once home to Teterin Engineering. But, the Stoddarts have since transformed it into a world-class performance space. Daniel said the duo believed 2020 was merely a setback, adding there was so much to look forward to in 2021. As evidence of that conviction, the Stoddarts decided to literally invest in the theatre industry and the region. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say it was a nerve-wracking decision,” said Daniel, who founded Newcastle
“In June, we leapt headfirst into our somewhat scary but, undeniably, thrilling new future.” The “gem”, however, needed some major polishing to find its shine. But, with the help of a team of amazing family and friends who’ve given their time and muscle, over the past five months, the redundant warehouse was finally converted into a dream facility. It will now be the permanent home for The Very Popular Theatre Company and Hunter Drama. The current fit-out includes two large studios, where classes and workshops will be held regularly; and rehearsals conducted for all major productions and stage events. The custom-fitted foyer includes a laptop workstation, iPhone charging stations and a gallery installation showcasing highlights from Hunter Drama’s

news Latty’s inspiring journey after bushfires What a difference a year makes. The recovery of an orphan koala joey at Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary has brought hope as the local community remembered the devastating impact of the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires. Nifty Latty – affectionately known as Latty − was found by a University of Newcastle researcher at Latitude One by Ingenia Lifestyle in June. After seeing the young marsupial alone and without her mother, he reported the sighting to the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary. Latty is approximately 12 months old and, while the story behind how she ended up by herself is not fully known, she has become a strong symbol of the devastating impact of the bushfires. Latitude One resident and Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary volunteer Pam Churchman was tasked with keeping a close watch on the joey until she could be rescued and cared for at the facility. “I’ve been a volunteer for more than three years and I am passionate about koalas and their welfare,” she said.
“I am just one of the many dedicated helpers and staff there. “I feel there is nothing more important to me as a volunteer to be able to help care for our sick and injured wildlife. “Particularly koalas, who are vulnerable in the wild due to the lack of and continued destruction of their habitat by development, natural disasters − like fires – and injuries from cars and dogs.” As 2020 drew to a close, Australians were reminded of the fires that swept across the country, with Latitude One itself being impacted by the blaze that sparked behind the community in April − burning through 250 hectares of bushland. Ingenia Lifestyle project sales manager Sheree Richardson said Latty’s recovery had brought up strong memories for the residents of Latitude One. “We don’t know if Latty lost her mother and her home in the bushfires, but she represents hope at this time of the year,” she explained. “The residents are so relieved that she was found and being cared for.

Tourism trek to showcase city’s stunning coastline Lake Macquarie’s dramatic coastline will be the drawcard in a new tourism tout aimed at luring nature lovers to the region this summer school holiday season. Local tourism operator CoastXP has added an 8.5-kilometre guided coastal hike through Wallarah National Park to its itinerary, taking in Caves Beach and the rugged coastal wilderness to the south. The hike, which launched last weekend, will focus on the area’s Aboriginal heritage, native flora and fauna, geology, and history since European settlement. CoastXP director Dominic May said the COVIDSafe, 2.5-hour walks were aimed at both locals and interstate and overseas visitors. “We’ve seen from our existing experiences that a large percentage
of guests are from the local area,” he said. “I think a lot of people are keen to explore their own backyard, learn more about it and maybe take a look at parts of it they otherwise might not see.” The Caves Coastal Hikes, which have been approved by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, will be hosted by Mr May and environmental scientist and wildlife guide Rachael Scott. “They’ll cover some of the most iconic and picturesque areas of Wallarah National Park and will include a drink at the end at Caves Coastal Bar and Bungalows,” Mr May said. news Hunter innovator reinvents the wheel in bid to impress green thumbs Peter McKinnon loves solving problems. Drawing on his knowledge of construction and design, the Novocastrian innovator quite literally re-invented the wheel last month. From his Beresfield-based business, Mr McKinnon launched the Omnia Plant Glider, a plant dolly that holds up to 90 kilograms and boasts a multi-directional, swivel caster system. The potted plant trolley, produced in the Hunter, was born from a lack of suitable options available in the gardening market, and to impress family members who’d requested a back-saving invention. “There’s hundreds of different types of these things on the market,” Mr McKinnon said. “But they’re all low-quality products. “I noticed boutique nurseries tended not to stock any of them because none of them really lived up to expectation.” The challenge, Mr McKinnon said, was to create a potted plant mover that was both functional and good-looking.
“It really does look great and complements people’s pots rather than detracting from them,” he said. “Just think of those shopping trolleys that are stubborn in their movements. “This is a wheel, just like they are, but this has a lot more directional movement and load stability, it potentially has unlimited uses.” The wheel technology used in the Omnia Plant Glider offers 360-degree manoeuvrability, better directional control and tracking, precise positioning, minimal wheel space/housing requirements, simple mounting, non-marking polyurethane rollers, load stability, load distribution and a rust-free construction. Gaining support from several Hunter businesses, Mr McKinnon is now hoping his invention will impress green thumbs across the globe. “It’s the first dolly of its kind – and price-point – that won’t corrode or easily tip by getting caught in cracks and gaps,” he said.

Apricot yeasted cake The CSIRO has released a new weight loss tool, which it believes will motivate Australians to achieve New Year’s resolutions.
Quiz the new weight loss tool, say CSIRO If you want to lose weight in 2021, a quiz is what you need, according to the CSIRO. Releasing its new Start Strong Diet Quiz, the global group touted as Australia’s national science research agency believes it has produced this year’s top weight management tool. Offering a free personalised tool aimed at helping Australians understand their diet mindset into the new year, the quiz assesses participants’ values and readiness for change. Behavioural scientists at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have designed a set of questions designed to tap into a person’s passions, motivations, aspirations and readiness for change to help them kick start a weight loss program. Accessible on mobile devices, the quiz is the result of an analysis of 11,000 CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet members. It assesses what motivates individuals to make healthy changes to their lifestyle. Whether they are more motivated to change their diet, increase their exercise or monitor their measurements, the quiz provides practical tips based on lifestyle choices, passions and aspirations to help participants personalise their weight loss plan. CSIRO behavioural scientist Dr Emily Brindal said understanding people’s reasons for starting a formal weight loss program was critical to help them stay committed once the New Year’s resolutions have waned. “‘New year, new me’ resolutions can often be spur-of-the-moment, and we all know that,
despite best intentions, motivation levels often drop as challenges present,” she explained. “The Start Strong Diet Quiz has been developed to help Australians take stock of their mindset and provide prompts to boost their motivation for diet and exercise, ensuring they can enter their weight loss program with the key information they need when losing weight and improving their health in 2021.” According to CSIRO research, most people begin a diet with high levels of motivation and commitment to lose weight. Among its members, 93% were motivated to lose weight to feel good and improve their quality of life, with health inspiring 89%. Most people who were classified as obese were encouraged to lose weight for their health (92%). About 41% of this group were motivated by their family, while trigger events such as a wedding or a death motivated 19%, which is almost double the number of people classed as normal weight who were interested by a trigger event. Being recommended to lose weight by someone in their lives, such as a doctor, was six times more likely to be a reason for people classed as obese. The CSIRO, whose accomplishments include faster Wi-Fi, plastic bank notes, extended wear contact lenses and Aerogard, claim its latest invention will provide a motivational map to guide those seeking to improve their overall health and wellbeing in 2021. - Rebecca Riddle
Typically available between November and February, apricots are a star of the summer season. And what better way to celebrate the delicate stonefruit than with this recipe from Julia Busuttil Nishimura? A Year of Simple Family Food by Julia Busuttil Nishimura, Published by Plum, RRP $39.99, Photography by Armelle Habib. Serves 8 150ml full-cream milk 300g tipo 00 flour 7g active dry yeast Pinch of fine sea salt Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 1 egg, lightly beaten 70g unsalted butter, softened 110g caster sugar 500g apricots, halved, stones removed, then quartered 3 cardamom pods, freshly ground Warm the milk in a small saucepan over a low heat for 1–2 minutes. Transfer to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook and add the flour, yeast, salt, lemon zest, egg, butter and 50g of the caster sugar. Mix on a medium speed for 4–5 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Transfer to a bowl lightly greased with butter, cover and stand in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a 30cm round tray with baking paper. Tip the dough onto the tray using a pastry scraper then use your hands to press the dough out to the edge of the tray. Arrange the apricots on the dough in concentric circles, leaving a small border at the edge. Mix the remaining caster sugar with the cardamom and sprinkle over the apricots and any exposed dough. Bake for 35 minutes or until the apricots are soft and the dough is risen and golden. Serve warm or on the day of baking. 11

Teen set to star in Dear Diary
When Bridget Phipps takes centre stage at the Royal Exchange Salon Theatre later this month, the teenager will be starring in a performance she can truly call her own.
From ticketing, costumes, script and props, to musical direction, lighting and venue hire, the Hunter School of Performing Arts student has produced her own cabaret. Entitled ‘Dear Diary’, Bridget’s one-hour solo performance forms part of her final Talent Development Program (TDP) assessment. The (almost) 18-year-old says Dear Diary is a modern look at a traditional role. “You could say it’s a Disney princess story with a twist,” she said. “But, it’s a one-woman show. It’s a look at the traditional female role.” Dear Diary is a story about Elizabeth Young, an ordinary girl who wants to find love. “The audience are her diary, and she records the experiences she has on her way to finding love, with them,” she explained. “Without giving away too much, Elizabeth learns that she doesn’t need love to be complete. “Love will come eventually; it will all be fine.” Bridget is no stranger to performing strong female characters. Aside from her solo performance in Dear Diary, the Corlette-raised singer-songwriter is also rehearsing for her performance as Morticia Addams in Young People’s Theatre Newcastle‘s performance of The Addams Family, expected in
April. “It’s a juggling act but I like to keep busy,” Bridget said. “It must run in the family.” The youngest of four children, Bridget’s siblings are also established talents within the arts sector. “I have a brother who is an actor and another who is in the ballet in New Zealand,” she said. “And, my sister is a pop singer, too.” Blessed with unique sounding vocals, Bridget has been singing on stage since she was five years old and acting in stage productions from the age of 10. “I’ve always had this deeper, older voice,” she said. “So, I learned to like it, and train it, and make it my art. This is a harsh industry but I’m learning to be prepared for that.” Part of her inspiration, Bridget said, stems from her idols Barbra Streisand, Audrey Hepburn and Doris Day. “I think I was meant to be born in that era,” she explained. “I just love the voices, and the fashion, I wish I’d been around to hear these women sing live.” Bridget’s cabaret Dear Diary will be performed on Saturday 23 January at 7pm. - Rebecca Riddle

Yearly jobs for the yard: January to April Gardening columnist Judy Sharpe shares her tips for the first four months of 2021. You can find out how to care for your garden from May to August in our next edition. JANUARY Dig out annuals that have finished blooming or have become mushy from the rain, apply dolomite to sweeten the soil, and plant an interim crop to provide flowers from now until autumn. Roses will need to be fertilised to continue flowering. Apply Sudden Impact and dolomite and keep a close watch on bushes for fungal diseases, black spot, and powdery mildew. Fallen stone fruit and tomatoes infected by fruit fly should be cleaned up from the garden and disposed of so that the fruit fly doesn’t multiply in the soil for next year. FEBRUARY This year, the humidity hasn’t been too high, but still check indoor plants for mealy bug. This white fluffy pest should be sprayed with Malathon and

white oil. Long canes on climbers such as wisteria and jasmine should be trimmed to keep them under control. Once agapanthus have finished flowering, cut the long stems off at the base. If you wish to propagate new plants, leave some seeds to ripen, tying a paper bag over the drying head to catch the seed. Give roses a light prune before the end of this month, feeding with poultry manure, followed three weeks later by rose food. Note: ground grow, not potted. MARCH Autumn has arrived. Dig summer mulches into the soil, add dolomite to gardens and lawns. Dust young cabbage plants to deter white butterflies laying eggs, resulting in grubs. This month, it is important to re-pot cyclamen, begin watering and fertilise. One of the most important March jobs is to address winter grass in the lawn – don’t wait for the seed heads to appear. Citrus needs to be fertilised with poultry manure and citrus food this month. Note: not potted citrus, this will burn them. They
APRIL This month is ideal to purchase sasanqua camellias in flower. Use an acidic potting mix. Although not as spectacular as Japonicas, sasanquas are hardier, ideal for hedging, and will grow in sun or shade. Traditionally, poppies should be planted on Anzac Day – the climate is right to plant in beds manured with poultry manure.
