This week... From the editor I recall writing about my New Year’s resolutions – saving money and cutting back on coffee – in my first column for 2020. It was all going so well… until the second week of January. So, I will take each day as it comes and enjoy the simple pleasures, like a morning coffee, as much as I can this time around. Even the best laid plans or intentions went out the window last year as we stumbled through like a punch-drunk boxer. Hunter Valley Zoo, like most around the nation, struggled when it was forced to close for 13 weeks due to the outbreak of COVID-19. However, the Nulkaba-based site has high hopes for 2021 and, with the school holidays still upon us, now is a great time to show your support for it and other family-friendly venues (while abiding by NSW Health advice, of course). The zoo recently welcomed two new additions, giraffes Sophie and Shingo, which are proving popular with visitors. Read more about the zoo’s efforts during the pandemic and plans for the year ahead in our Time Out section, page 28. I trust you all had a refreshing break and stayed safe and well. news Santa Mark farewells 2020 Santa Mark loves Christmas so much that his Ho, Ho, Ho-ing begins at Halloween. That’s when the Sandy Claus dons his red suit and poses for beach photographs with Novocastrian families and their pets. It’s a practice that continued up until Christmas Eve, where he eventually took a break, joining his three children and almost six grandchildren to celebrate festivities at his Lake Macquarie home. Getting sand between the toes, sunburned cheeks and sweaty red suits may not be for everyone, but Santa Mark says it is his favourite eight weeks of the year. “It started when Maggie, my granddaughter, wouldn’t sit on any Santa’s knee for a photo,” he said. “Her mum would try and get a family Christmas photo but, no, she wouldn’t do it.”

That’s when the electrician of almost half a century decided to don the red suits and neglected to shave. “My daughter Kate reckons the goatee was a bit of a mess that first year, but it grew every year,” he said. The beard is now thick, white and lengthy. The gentle, cheerful grandfather has grown in popularity throughout the Hunter, volunteering at social clubs, Christmas parties and charitable events. “I met Jasey after she saw me doing a gig at a leagues club,” Santa Mark said. “That was [about] five years ago.” Photos with Sandy Claus founder Jasey Stanley said, despite 2020’s additional challenges, her team of eight had snapped at least 1,000 families over a six-week period. Macquarie. “We’ve had to sociallydistance and find new ways to get all of the family members and Santa in a shot, but we’ve made it work,” she said. Freelancing as a photographer for more than 15 years in shopping centres, Jasey said moving her work to the beach was a turning point. “I love it,” she said. “I love the challenge, and that includes the weather. A little drizzle is fine, overcast skies is great but the wind can be a pain.”

Capturing whole families, including the four-legged members, together with Santa still brings a smile to her face. “Some kids love Santa until they’re up close and then they freak out,” she said. “You can see it on their faces, they’re thinking: ‘Hang on a minute, he’s real and he talks!’ “But watching their faces light up when Santa talks to them makes it all worthwhile.” - Rebecca Riddle

news Revitalised Macquarie Pier reopened to the public Novocastrians are pounding the pavement on the newly reopened Macquarie Pier after months without access. Stage one of the $3 million revitalisation project, headed by Port Authority of NSW, has created a 900-metre pathway with sandstone seating, maritime-style fencing, and a paved area at the foot of Nobbys Head to enjoy views of the harbour. It was officially opened to the public in late December. Port Authority of NSW’s Newcastle Head of Operations, Emma Fensom, said she hoped to see residents making use of the track. “I just think it is a really positive project – it’s important to have something that everyone can

enjoy, especially this year over any [other],” she said. “Novocastrians can get out and enjoy the view and see the working harbour and walk along the beach. “It [will] bring people together and it is also good for everyone because they are out getting some exercise.” Ms Fensom added that it was a huge investment in the community and Newcastle. “Port Authority is really proud to have made the investment, along with their partners,” she said. Chief executive Philip Holliday added the pier would give people the chance to connect with the city’s heritage. “Newcastle is a city built on its harbour,” he said. “Macquarie Pier gives the

Newcastle community a place to connect with their maritime heritage and appreciate the beauty and importance of the harbour that developed Newcastle into the city it is today.” Work on the path is not quite finished, with construction on the installation of interpretive heritage features along the route to begin soon in a bid to tell the story of Newcastle’s maritime history. The walkway will remain open while this work is undertaken.

It is expected to be completed in March or April this year. The project was supported by the NSW Government through a $500,000 grant from the Newcastle Port Community Contribution Fund and a $200,000 contribution from Port of Newcastle. Tutoring program guides Kiara to Year 6 finish line Kiara Byrnes will start high school this year, but it is something that may not have been possible without a special tutoring program. The 11-year-old battled illness and treatment for much of her final years of primary school, which meant she was missing a lot of classwork and falling behind her peers. “Kiara’s been through an awful lot for a child her age, which was impacting all parts of her life,� her mum Briony said. “Not only was her education suffering due to the amount of school she was missing, but the nature of her treatment and the lack of contact with her peers really affected her confidence and increased her anxiety levels. “She [was] diagnosed with Tinea Capitis in June 2017, which is a fungal infection on the scalp but, because in the early days it was misdiagnosed, it turned into staph infection which was the bigger issue. “She had four or five surgeries within a few days and ended up needing a skin graft in 2018 and now she is just continually getting better.� Briony believes that a Ronald McDonald House tutoring program is what helped her daughter to catch up with her peers. “That program was amazing –

when she started it, she was still in mainstream school and Tim (the tutor) would come to the school for sessions,� Briony said. “After a while, she would just go and meet with Tim and came out a lot happier, it really boosted her confidence. “It was just a very informal way of learning and getting ahead without the overwhelming nature of having to sit in a classroom with 30 kids. “I can see that it helped her a lot.� While Kiara is not sure about whether she’ll like high school or not, the homeschooled youngster knows it will be full of learning and growth. She added that Tim helped her through the difficult times. “It’s exciting to finish Year 6,� Kiara said. “[Tim] helped me do my work and made it fun.� Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern NSW chief executive, Ross Bingham, said its learning program, which has been operating in the Hunter since 2001, continues to have a significant impact on many families across Northern NSW. “In 2020 alone, we have had 145 primary and high school students who have benefited from the learning program,� Ross said. - Elizabeth Symington

With the winding up of government support expected in late March, Newcastle real estate agent Chad Dunn says now is the time to prepare financially to avoid a tough 2021. Newcastle property values The news for Novocastrians remains positive, with CoreLogic’s regionals index recording a monthly growth rate double that of capital cities. The former steel city featured almost a dozen times in the group’s 2020 Best of the Best Report released on Thursday 17 December. Bar Beach was announced as regional NSW’s third highest median value for a house at $1.7 million, followed by The Hill in seventh place at $1.5 million. Units in both Carrington and Newcastle ranked fifth and sixth respectively in the highest median value, both yielding more than $700,000. A unit in Warners Bay increased in value by 12.2% during 2020 – the average price now $592,204.

Touted as Australia’s largest provider of property information, analytics and property-related risk management services, CoreLogic regularly provide data relating to the country’s real estate market. Head of Research Eliza Owen said, with the winding down of 2020, Australians were gaining more confidence in the property market. “The year to October saw a remarkable 14.5% lift in the volume of finance secured for the purchase of property, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ lending indicators,” Ms Owen said. “The post-COVID mortgage lending boost was driven by owneroccupiers including changeover

For Hunter residents wanting to invest in real estate in 2021, Muswellbrook and Singleton are offering the highest rental yields for units, up 8% and 6.5% to $291 and $313 per week respectively in 2020. “Both Sydney and regional NSW were back into the upswing phase of the property cycle in the three months to November,” Ms Owen said. “Sydney dwelling values were up 0.3%, while regional values were up 3.1%. For regional NSW, this is the highest quarterly growth rate since 2017. “Indicators are showing the regional NSW dwelling market is still on the rise, despite the recession. “Every regional market in NSW has seen an increase in dwelling values since March through to November. “Buyer demand is mostly being fuelled by a surge in owner occupiers rather than investors, looking to take advantage of historically low interest rates, generous government

incentives and increased state of normality.” State government incentives, including changes to stamp duty and additional building grants, are also supporting demand, CoreLogic claims. Back to basics Australian financial comparison website Canstar has also weighed in on 2021 predictions, citing a return to basics necessary for financial survival. In its fourth annual Consumer Pulse Report, released on Monday 30 November, the Australian research agency identified that the property market outlook was among the greatest concerns for Australians. For the first time in years property fears overtook financial concerns, savings, and debt worries. Canstar’s Group executive of financial services Steve Mickenbecker said 2021 looked likely to be the year of sticking to basics.

“This is the first time in four years that the cost of electricity and gas has moved from the number one financial concern for Australian households,” he said. “Australians are in survival mode. “Current financial concerns highlight people’s focus on sticking to the basics of putting food on the table and keeping a steady job in the year ahead.” Regional areas to attract newcomers The influx of city slickers into regional and remote communities will also increase next year, a new report shows. According to an NBN Co survey conducted by YouGov and released last month, Australians wanting to relocate to their ideal community now see it as a feasible option thanks to the advent of working remotely. Up to 36% of NSW residents surveyed between 31 August and 19 September 2020 said they were

considering relocating after the pandemic. The majority (65%) wanted to move to a regional area within the state citing the appeal of a quieter lifestyle, a desire to save money and wanting to live a more environmentally sustainable life. Mr Dunn says, while news is positive in his industry, it will be remiss not to warn people of “the storm that is coming”. “It’s important to have savings on hand,” he said. “Fix your interest rates, refinance to give yourself a buffer, offload surplus property with excess debt you don’t really need, have a licensed real estate agent give you an appraisal on your property, and revise the household budget. “It is very interesting times and unpredictable times and even the experts may get it wrong at the moment, so err on the side of caution is always the best adage at these times.” - Rebecca Riddle

news Environmental gurus step up their rescue plan Newcastle-based environmental gurus Plastic Police will enter its second stage of saving the planet, thanks to a $134,500 funding boost from the EPA. The support means schools and businesses in the region can benefit from additional on-hand recycling advice. Plastic Police is a community engagement program whose aim is to manage soft plastic packaging waste. Its founders Lexi Crouch and Samantha Cross are among a number of businesses and individuals who will share in a total of $2.5 million in grants as part of the NSW EPA Circulate Industrial Ecology Program. Ms Crouch said the money would allow the pair to increase the size of its audience.

“This funding will help us tackle the soft plastic waste problem through education and circular solutions,” Ms Crouch said. “We’re excited to help more organisations and communities reduce, recycle and repurchase their soft plastic.” The Plastic Blueprint is a digital platform enabling businesses to access a step-by-step guide, resources and tools needed to implement an effective soft plastics reduction and recycling program within their organisation. It is based on the pair’s five years of learning and experience. The blueprint was trialled on the John Holland group earlier this year, with 350 kilograms of soft plastic being converted into Central Coast roads. The Plastic Police Starter Pack

Newcastle is set to play host to an exciting rugby-hybrid tournament this month. The Beach 5s rugby festival, a cross between rugby union, rugby league and touch football, will come to Newcastle’s iconic Nobbys Beach from 24 to 26 January. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the event was a fantastic way to kick-

off 2021, and a great opportunity for fans in Newcastle to get out-andabout, with many of the city’s major events in 2020 cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “City of Newcastle is supporting Beach 5s Australia Day Festival 2021 with $30,000 in sponsorship from the Major Event Development Fund,” she said.

“We are thrilled that Newcastle is the first NSW location to host the new hybrid football tournament and Nobbys Beach offers an idyllic vantage point for spectators to soak up all the excitement of the City’s Australia Day long weekend program.” Beach 5s is a five-a-side, fast paced and contact-based iteration of the game, with no lineouts, scrums, or conversions. Heat BBQ or griddle pan to high. Lightly oil the cut side of your peaches and grill until dark and caramelised. Cool and cut in half again. Arrange the rocket, lettuce and radicchio in a bowl, with the peaches and prosciutto slices on top. Dress with olive oil and the glaze. Top with the burrata, salt flakes and chilli flakes.

Vegetable oil, to shallow fry

Prepare ingredients: Finely chop the rosemary leaves, discarding the stems. Finely chop the parsley, including the stems. Finely grate the lemon zest, then halve the lemon. Cut one half into wedges. Finely shred the cabbage. Peel and coarsely grate the carrot. Halve the shallot, then thinly slice lengthways.

Make slaw: Juice the remaining lemon half, then add the juice to a bowl with the olive oil and season well with salt and pepper. Get ready to serve: Heat a thin layer of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. In batches, cook the chicken for 3 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through. Drain on paper towel. Cultural facility to put Lake Mac on MAP Work will start soon on an Australia-first arts pavilion that aims to cement Lake Macquarie as one of the premier cultural destinations in NSW. The $3.5 million Multi Arts Pavilion (MAP) will host national and international contemporary art installations, digital art screenings and audio presentations, theatre performances and music at Speers Point Park. NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin joined Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser for a sodturning event last month, with the facility expected

to be completed by mid-2021. Cr Fraser said MAP would attract up to 45,000 additional visitors to the city annually. “Set in one of the east coast’s most beautiful lakeside parks, MAP will increase local tourism revenue by an estimated $2.5 million a year,” she said. “MAP will add to what is already one of our region’s recreational and event hubs. “Its performances, shows and outdoor events will bring new life, energy, sound and creativity

into Speers Point Park after hours.” University of Newcastle architecture student Samantha Bailey’s concept design was chosen as the winner out of dozens submitted through a competition in 2018. Lake Macquarie City Council’s Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism, Jacqui Hemsley, said the project had already attracted national interest and would contribute towards shaping the future of art experiences. “We want to build an immersive experience that creates a connection between location, art and audience that visitors won’t find anywhere else,” she said. “MAP is an agile and flexible venue in a highuse location. It will be an ideal stepping-stone for emerging artists, and a platform to present alternative productions to new audiences.” Expressions of interest are also open for two major public art pieces to feature at the venue, including an illuminated artwork to be installed on the exterior of the building and an external artwork to be installed in the grounds. Civic Theatre set to return with a bang Theatre, dance, music and comedy are set to return to Newcastle with a bang this year. Writers festival’s new dates The Newcastle Writers Festival will welcome new dates this year. The event is scheduled to take place alongside the first weekend of the City of Newcastle’s arts festival from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 September, offering audiences a jam-packed cultural program. Director Rosemarie Milsom said the move, from proposed dates in May, was essential to alleviate uncertainty about “live” activities and to enable planning for a comprehensive in-venue package featuring writers from across Australia. Three guest curators will also be appointed. The festival is launching the Newcastle Emerging Writer Prize, too, which is sponsored by local wine label Elephant in the Room. The winner of the new prize will be announced at the September festival and will receive $5,000 for professional development. Program submissions for 2021 will be accepted via the festival’s website from 11 January to 22 February. Meanwhile, the September program is expected to launch on 13 August. Hunter Valley Zoo stands tall after a tough year When the world came to a sudden stop in 2020, zoos across the nation stuck their necks out in a bid to survive. Zookeepers put in long hours to ensure the animals were fed, enclosures were clean, and all the necessary tasks were done for the zoo’s survival. Only one thing was different – they didn’t have any visitors during the height of the pandemic, losing their main source of income. Hunter Valley Zoo, located near Cessnock, was forced to close for 13 weeks and, when it reopened, activities still could not return to normal. “Like everyone, the pandemic had a huge impact on us,” director Jason Pearson said. “During the time of closure, zoo life was pretty much the same, cleaning and feeding the animals, the only big difference being no visitors. “The big changes came when we reopened [in terms of] not being able to offer shows or talks and having to collect people’s details via QR codes – it was such a different world to open in.” Zookeeper Riley Lowe added that it was a challenging time. “A bit of organised chaos is the best way to describe it,” he said.

“When we closed, we did the best we could with what we had and we were lucky enough that we got support with JobKeeper and government grants to keep us afloat because we couldn’t just shut down and walk away, we still had to be here to look after the animals.” Riley said the zoo had been bustling with visitors since its reopening. “Everyone has come out and supported us,” he said. “I think people were sick of being stuck at home, so they wanted to come out to the zoo where it is a nice, open environment.” Riley believes that part of their popularity is thanks to new arrivals Sophie and Shingo. The giraffes were welcomed in November, but have been years in the making for the zoo. The team is also planning to welcome a third giraffe to create a breeding herd for the future. “Hopefully, they’ll be a bit of a crowd drawer in the school holidays,” Riley said. “But it is just amazing to be part of a breeding program for such an iconic and well-known African species. “Everyone knows and loves giraffes, so to have them here in the Hunter Valley is pretty awesome.”

Heartfelt message on power of love, finding your voice Music is about the magic that can happen when someone who cannot speak with words finds people who can listen with their hearts. The story begins when Zu (Hudson), estranged from her family and a lifelong self-saboteur, finds herself the sole guardian of Music (Ziegler), her teenage half-sister, after the death of their grandmother. Music is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum, and her grandmother has lovingly created a schedule and daily routine to support her with the help of some neighbourhood friends. Not having had her grandmother’s experience of loving and caring for Music, Zu instantly struggles with her new responsibility as caretaker. Their less than peaceful first breakfast together is overheard by their neighbour Ebo (Odom), a kind and gentle soul who surprises Zu by demonstrating not only his compassion, but his keen understanding of Music. His own, slowly revealed life story, makes him someone Zu can depend on and learn from as well. Music combines a heartfelt tale about the power of love with musical sequences that propel and amplify the story, giving the audience a vivid window into the characters’ inner lives. My favourite things ACACIA So, if you haven’t already noticed, I’m a very food motivated giraffe! Acacia or Wattle trees are an absolute staple of my diet, being the same trees that giraffes would be enjoying over in Africa. Luckily for me, Australia has plenty of species of Acacia and I get multiple branches per day to devour.

PELLETS When it comes to my food, pellets would definitely be right up there with the carrot sticks. I usually get pellets as a reward for training sessions with my zookeepers or as an afternoon snack when I come into my barn for the night.

GIRAFFE AT HUNTER VALLEY ZOO

Sophie is one of the newest residents at Hunter Valley Zoo – she arrived late last year from Australia Zoo in Queensland. Born in 2018, she is still quite young, considering giraffes can reach the age of 30 in captivity but, despite this, she is a confident and calm-natured animal. Sophie was welcomed to the zoo in November, following an overnight journey in Hunter Valley Zoo’s specially-designed giraffe trailer and has taken every part of her new life in her stride, developing a bond with her new keepers and new male companion, Shingo. Shingo joined her from Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. Sophie is a very intelligent giraffe and eagerly participates in her training with her keepers – as long as there is a food reward in it for her. In the future, Sophie and her partner Shingo hope to be able to breed, bringing some gorgeous baby giraffes into the world but, for now, the pair are happily settling into their new surroundings at Hunter Valley Zoo. 38

CARROT STICKS

Shingo is my new male companion here at Hunter Valley Zoo and, although he is a bit younger and shorter than I am, I love him to bits! He can be a bit shy at times but I’m always there beside him, helping to build his confidence. I can’t wait to start a family with this handsome man.

Carrot sticks would have to be a favourite snack of mine and I usually get to enjoy some of these when I’m being introduced to new people and things as I settle into my new home.

PEDICURES I’m a pretty spoilt giraffe, I know, but who could say no to a pedicure every day? Luckily for me, I have a team who love to look after me, cleaning off the base of my feet each morning and checking for any damage they may need to be managed further.
