From the editor It’s been great to see how proactive our local politicians have been in the community over the past few weeks.

Wallsend State MP Sonia Hornery led the charge after blasting the state government about its plans to cut a school bus service.

Less than 24 hours after informing local media outlets, including the Newcastle Weekly (which covered the story online), that the service between Cardiff and Hunter Sports High School could be cut, the government notified her that it would instead “resume as per normal”.

Then, Newcastle Federal MP Sharon Claydon took a stand against offshore drilling. Petroleum Exploration Permit 11 (PEP 11) is the east coast’s only oil and gas offshore licence and a federal government decision regarding a possible two-year extension is still pending. PEP 11 allows exploration in an 8,200km2 stretch of ocean from Wollongong to Newcastle.

Finally, Charlestown State MP Jodie Harrison voiced her concerns over overcrowding in schools, with recent figures showing 11 public schools in her electorate have exceeded their enrolment cap.

The vessel being towed back to Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie’s base on Sunday afternoon.

Two young anglers are counting their lucky stars after their fishing boat was swamped by a wave and sank at Moon Island, just off Swansea Heads, at the weekend.

Despite the four-metre runabout’s demise, the pair – believed to be in their mid-to-late 20s – were fortuitously rescued and picked up by another vessel, in close proximity to the area.

It is understood that neither person was injured, with both of them safe on dry land.

Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie Unit Commander Malcolm Druce said the organisation received a “mayday” call about 2.30pm on Sunday – and sprang into action.

“Their boat sank in five minutes, that’s how quickly it happened,” he explained.

“So, they’re extremely fortunate, especially when they were not wearing life jackets. But, a big rap has to go to the member of the public who was nearby.

“Their actions prevented a far worse scenario. The duo could have been washed up on the rocks – or something more serious.

“They’d been in the water for approximately a quarter of an hour.

“Sadly, while we were collecting the debris, our members found a life jacket floating around.

“So, they had them on board the vessel; they just weren’t wearing them.”

Commander Druce admitted it was a timely reminder for seafarers – of all ages – to wear life jackets, at all times, on the water.

“In this instance, it was lucky they were picked up; that’s not always the case,” he said.

“There are some good members of the public out there, which proved handy [today].

“However, I’m extremely surprised the two of them didn’t have their life jackets on.

“It’s a message we need to reinforce again and again.

“People must fulfil all safety precautions when they’re going out on a boat. Just make sure you check everything from fuel to telling others where you’ll be.

“And, at the moment, there are a lot more vessels on the water since COVID-19 – everyone is staying at home, instead of travelling.

“Don’t get me wrong, we love seeing people on the lake.

“But, we also want them to be safe. If you prepare for the worst, it can limit the danger if anything occurs.”

news School’s new principal keen to make a positive impact Making sure that every child is known, valued and cared for: that’s the goal for Hamilton South Public School’s newest principal.

Mark Warren, who has been teaching for 15 years, started his first term in the role last week.

The father-of-two says it’s been an exciting beginning to the year.

“It has been wonderful – the kids, the staff, the parents and the broader community have been really welcoming,” he said.

“It [was] strange coming into the school when there were no kids.

“The place comes alive when they are here.

“It’s really the kids that make it the school, they give it the character and the culture – without them, it’s just a collection of buildings.”

Mr Warren hopes that he can

create an environment where both the students and staff thrive.

“I want to support teachers in doing what they do best,” he said.

“They are in the position where they can most directly impact the students, so I think that a key part of my role is making sure they can do their job as effectively as possible.”

Hamilton South Public School is home to more than 400 students, and Mr Warren hopes he can make a positive impact.

“Being out there and available to the students is important because the kids do want to have a chat and they want to get to know you and it’s important that you get to know them,” he said.

“I want to make sure every child is known, valued and cared for because once you do that they’ll feel like they

belong.” For Mr Warren, teaching was something he always wanted to pursue.

“I always thought it was the job for me,” he said.

His favourite part of it is getting to know the students.

“It’s the interaction with the kids and seeing that they are happy with the environment they are learning in,” he said.

“It’s a childhood, it’s not just an education, it’s seven years of their life

and their formative years so we don’t just measure our success on strict academic progress.

“Are [the students] engaged and happy to come to school?

“I feel like primary school sets them up with those foundational life skills, as well as the academic knowledge.

“And, you hope it leads them to be successful and happy in their futures.”

Battery plans at Kurri Kurri An energy company is planning to build the world’s largest grid-scale battery at Kurri Kurri.

The power source, with capacity up to 1200MW, will be located within the Hunter Economic Zone (HEZ) precinct, under a new 30-year lease agreement with the Hunter Investment Corporation.

CEP.Energy’s chief executive Peter Wright said the HEZ site was zoned for heavy industrial use, preapproved for power generation, and adjacent to an Ausgrid sub-station.

“It is among the best handful of sites in Australia for reliable and efficient grid connection,” he said.

Mr Wright added the battery was proposed to be developed in stages.

The start of construction of CEP’s NSW big battery is planned for the first quarter of 2022, while the target timeframe for the beginning

of operations is 2023. CEP chairman Morris Iemma believed integrated grid-scale battery networks were accelerating Australia’s transition to a clean energy future.

“Big batteries, including the one planned by CEP.Energy for the Hunter, will play a major role in filling the gaps left by the gradual retirement of coal and gas-fired generation assets, including the nearby Liddell Power Station,” he stated.

“The clean energy roadmap laid out by the NSW Government has provided the market with the confidence to invest in renewable generation supported by large battery storage.

“This project will help ensure the Hunter remains true to its heritage as one of the nation’s energy powerhouses as we work towards a cleaner, decarbonised future.”

Recycling plastic waste is in the bag Sue Bardsley is a self-confessed “bag lady”.

The grandmother-of-19 spends some of her time sewing Boomerang Bags for the Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, together with half-a-dozen other volunteers.

The talented seamstress, who has more than 60 years’ experience behind a sewing machine, joined a production line that regularly meets each month to create fabric bags aimed at reducing the use of plastic.

Boomerang Bags are made of mostly recycled fabric like donated sheets, pillowcases and blankets. They measure approximately 15 inches wide and 17 inches deep and are the product of two pieces of fabric connected with two straps.

Sue says the fabrics are donated by “some very generous people in the community”.

“We are never short of fabric,” she said.

“The donations come from everywhere.”

Boomerang Bags is an initiative that began in 2017 in Queensland when a pair of friends became concerned about the volume of plastic overflowing in landfills, floating in the oceans, and strangling marine life. What followed was the creation of a

platform that helps divert post-consumer material (waste) into reusable bags.

The Boomerang Bags have a two-fold purpose.

They are designed to not-only replace plastic bags but, most importantly, start conversations.

Gathering to sew has since become about connecting communities, diverting waste, starting conversations, fostering sustainable behaviour, and having a bit of fun.

The initiative has now spread to about 1,100 communities worldwide.

For Sue, group sewing for a good cause has been a way of life for years.

“I think I was a recycler before it was trendy,” she said.

“My grandkids are used to me getting involved in recycling.

“I get called all the names, like ‘compost nanna’ – I’m used to it. I find it disgusting what everyone throws out.”

Sue is a leader at Eastlakes U3A, while she also contributes every year to her five grand-daughters’ various school Mother’s Day stalls.

Belmont ‘Bag Lady’ Sue Bardsley is among a group of volunteers at the Cardiff Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, which sews Boomerang Bags to help eliminate the use of plastic bags.

“I made 50 for our school reunion a few years ago and, whenever I pet-sit, I make one for the household.”

A popular sailing regatta in Lake Macquarie will once again raise the mast to support a unique cancer program.

The annual Heaven Can Wait (HCW) Charity Sailing Regatta is set to take place from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 February.

It provides much-needed funds for Cancer Council’s Home Help Program, which assists terminal or recovering patients with domestic duties that they may find difficult to complete due to their condition.

Programs coordinator Sue Russell said the not-for-profit’s service was vital for patients and their loved ones.

“If you knew somebody who you loved and cared about and they needed support at home, wouldn’t that be a wonderful thing that they could access?” she said.

“When people come home, they don’t like to ask their loved ones to clean the toilet or vacuum the floors – much better to be able to provide them with a meal, for example.

“That’s where we step in.

“We can provide a program that supports them to have their house cleaned or lawn mowed for a period of time, which takes the burden off their loved ones, who can focus on other opportunities or ways to show support.”

The HCW regatta was originally conceived by Lake Macquarie resident, keen sailor and cancer survivor Shaun Lewicki to promote sailing and raise funds for men’s cancer research.

Royal Motor Yacht Club vice commodore and regatta director Mel Steiner said he later decided it was important to identify a specific program.

“I went to the Cancer Council

and asked them to look at what their needs were in terms of programs,” he said.

“They came back to me with this great idea [of the Home Help Program].”

Now in its 15th year, the 2021 edition will feature some added race divisions, with both dinghies and sailboards set to compete in a dash on a shortened course at the northern end of the lake.

It will also include regular events such as the Short One Lap Dash of about 16 nautical miles, the Classic One Lap Dash – a 30 nautical mile race around the length and breadth of the lake – and two gruelling races, the Challenging 12-Hour and Endurance 24-Hour.

The regatta will kick-off with a traditional charity fundraising dinner at the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Toronto from 6.30pm.

This year’s theme is Youth Sailors, in which a panel of five up-and-coming sailors will be interviewed by Newcastle ABC sports commentator Helene O’Neill.

Prior to the regatta starting on the Saturday, Toronto residents will be treated to a spectacular aerobatic display, with local pilot Paul Bennet set to dazzle at the helm of his Pitts Special.

In 2020, the HCW charity sailing regatta posted its record fundraising total of $46,000.

It is a major event in Lakefest – a festival of all things aquatic, which will take place on Lake Macquarie between Saturday 13 February and Saturday 6 March.

Fire prompts reminder A recycling firm is asking people to be more vigilant after a third fire in as many months.

Hunter Resource Recovery, the company responsible for recycling services in the Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Singleton and Cessnock council areas, is urging Hunter residents to be more aware of what goes in their yellow bins.

On Wednesday 3 February, a collection driver noticed that his load was alight on route from Maitland to Gateshead, and NSW Fire and Rescue were called to extinguish the blaze.

This incident came after two similar fires, one at the Gateshead facility and another truck blaze in Jesmond.

“The incorrect disposal of batteries and chemicals can have disastrous consequences” he said.

sport Cessnock coach predicts big things for Knights rookie Cessnock Goannas coach Todd Edwards believes that Brayden Musgrove boasts all the qualities to succeed in the NRL. And, if anyone is in a position to make such a claim, it is the premiership-winning mentor.

Edwards gladly welcomed the local junior – who essentially kicked off 2020 with the Manly Sea Eagles – back to the fold, with the powerful young centre playing an integral role in the side’s march to the Newcastle Rugby League title at the expense of Souths.

Now, Musgrove has another shot at the big time, after signing a two-year NRL contract with the Newcastle Knights.

“He’s a good player, mate,” Edwards said.

“Brayden was floating around

Manly [at the start of the season], however he ended up here again.

“But, he’s always been above average. He showed that last year in our competition just how good he is.

“Physically, Brayden has the right attributes. He’s an athlete, a big, tall kid.

“If he gets his opportunity (in the NRL), I’m sure he’ll take it.”

Edwards hopes that Musgrove’s journey from the Coalfields club will motivate other Goannas to follow their dreams, too.

“Yeah, definitely,” he said.

“I hope his success inspires the young blokes around here, especially those he played alongside last season. They’re a mile away [from the NRL] but, at the same time, not that far away.

“If a couple of things go their way,

they could be with Brayden.

“His presence here [in 2020], with the younger fellows, was great.

“Even though he’s a pretty quiet kid and didn’t say too much at training or on game days, he let his footy do the talking on the field.

“However, when he did speak, the boys certainly listened.”

Edwards believed Musgrove’s “experience” was also important in developing the culture at the

Goannas. “After being in that competitive environment [in Sydney], it rubbed off on the rest of the playing group – and that’s great,” he said.

“It makes my job as coach much easier when you have guys like Brayden. It drives standards.”

The new deal will see Musgrove remain a Knight until at least the end of 2022.

Puppets take the lead in colourful show Looks of wonder, excitement, and fascination.

That’s how people will react to Curious Legends’ latest show, Taylor’s Run. A highlighted performance during an inaugural New Annual festival, the production follows Taylor, a young girl who’s lost her favourite toy.

She sets out on a mission to search for her best friend, which involves sliding through piles of garbage, dodging giant apple cores, meeting cheeky native animals, and eventually coming face-to-face with a ghastly trash monster.

Featuring a cast of giant puppets, professional performers and talented children, Curious Legends’ artistic director Mitchell Reese says the show

will transform the Summerhill Waste Management Centre at Wallsend.

“It’s going to be fantastic,” he said.

“It is a site-specific performance so everything is at a very large scale.

“We had to look at how we would scale it [which involved asking]: ‘Okay, if there is a kookaburra with something next to it, like an apple core or a can, how big would it have to be to be to scale?’”

The production makes use of a number of items including pool noodles as giant straws and custommade puppets.

“Puppets are so versatile, useful and amazing – people love them and look at them with wonder,” Reese said.

“Months and months of work has gone into this production,” Reese said. “[City of Newcastle] commissioned us pre-COVID and we have been working all through lockdown – it’s a big show.

“We also just received funding from the Australian Government’s RISE (Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand) Fund and we will redevelop this show for touring in July and we’ll tour it nationally and

internationally in 2022.”

For the visual theatre company, Taylor’s Run will be one of its largest productions.

It has been booked for four performances, with two on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 February, and another two next week on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February.

All events will start at 7pm, where audiences will be transported to the Summerhill Waste Management Centre by bus from the Wallsend Library. Visit newannual.com for more information.

Taylor’s Run ready to transform waste centre

For the New Annual festival, Curious Legends will transform City of Newcastle’s Summerhill Waste Management Centre into a grand concert hall, where magic happens.

Taylor’s Run will be performed across two weekends – Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 February, as well as Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February.

The events will start at 7pm, with audiences to meet at the Wallsend Library (30 Bunn Street, Wallsend), where they will then be transported to the centre by bus prior to the show’s opening at 8pm.

Everyone must wear enclosed shoes for their visit to this facility.

Duo make television debut

Newcastle duo Matt and Brett, who appeared on Channel 9’s Travel Guides.

Newcastle’s Matt and Brett feel like they have won the lottery after making their television debut last month.

The couple is the latest team to join Channel 9’s Travel Guides, a show that takes Aussies to different destinations throughout the world.

But, this time, thanks to COVID-19, the 2021 season focused on what we have in our own backyard. The show stopped in at some iconic destinations in Australia, including the Whitsundays and Byron Bay. “Joining Travel Guides was like winning the lottery, we got to travel to some amazing places and see some amazing things and someone else paid for it all,” Matt said.

“We are grateful to [have had] this experience and we hope the people of Newcastle enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Brett added it was a whirlwind experience.

“It was a bit scary at first because we didn’t think we would be selected and then, finally, at the end of the process they asked us if we wanted to join and we were like: ‘Of course we do’,” he said.

“It was almost like you had to pinch yourself

to believe it, and the funny thing is we were on holidays when they called us to be on it.

“We’ve ticked off some things on our bucket list that we didn’t even know were there.”

Travel has been a passion for the duo for most of their lives.

The pair got married in New Zealand almost seven years ago and has been making an effort to explore the world every year since then.

However, even though they love to travel overseas, Matt says Travel Guides has given him a deeper love for Australia.

“I think [the pandemic has] given everyone a greater appreciation of not only what we have within our own country, but our own states and regions,” he said.

The year also gave both Matt and Brett time to further explore Newcastle and the Hunter Region.

“I think that Newcastle punches above its weight,” Matt said.

“From Nobbys all the way down to Merewether, that stretch is just amazing.

“How many cities can you work in and go for a surf in your lunch break?”

Brett added visitors to Newcastle would also be surprised by the different precincts.

“You can go out and have a walk on the break wall and have fish and chips after,” he said.

“It’s really casual but sophisticated at the same time.

“Within an hour of Newcastle, you can have the best of what the country has to offer.”

Moving forward, Matt and Brett hope to continue travelling and would love to appear on the next season of Travel Guides.

I think this past year has made everyone appreciate travelling even more. I am very fortunate to have a job which takes me to many different places. America is a captivating place, and I look forward to seeing more.

Zac Garred is a proud Novocastrian expat who has been living in Los Angeles for the last seven years. He started acting at 15, working on television shows and films in the United States, Australia and Europe throughout his career.

Most recently, Zac has worked on the film Occupation: Rainfall and the soon to be released Australian Gangster television series on Channel 7. Zac studied a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Newcastle majoring in Film and History. Film and television have always been one of his passions. Zac says he “loves being able to explore and tell stories”. He finds telling Australian stories is always extraordinary, because “Australia’s storytelling history goes back 60,000 years, so it is really exciting to continue that tradition”. Even though Zac loves Los Angeles, he says “I will always be from Newcastle because it is an integral part of who I am”.

SPORTS TEAMS I am obsessed with the Jets and the Newcastle Knights.

I remember the bells ringing around town after the 1997 grand final; I was at the Sydney Football Stadium in 2008 as well. Though I now also love the Alabama Crimson Tide, Everton, LA Rams and LAFC, that passion started in Newcastle.
