This week...

From the editor First, it was the car that drove off a cliff at Bar Beach last week. The driver miraculously survived, while a mother and her young child, who were playing on the beach below, suffered leg injuries and minor scratches respectively.

Who would think that simply going to the beach on a Thursday morning could end up putting your life in danger?

During this same week, another incident in Lake Macquarie – this time in the early hours of Saturday morning – highlighted the way stupidity and selfishness can negatively impact innocent people’s lives.

Eleven people were injured – one critically – when a 17-year-old driver, who was already disqualified from driving and allegedly later returned a positive roadside breath test, reportedly decided to run a red light in Edgeworth and collided with a van, which was operating as a taxi. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the mother-of-three who is, at the time of going to print, still in a critical condition in hospital.

Today – 1 October – officially marks the start of the bushfire season.

Our cover stars, Neil and Alison Mutton, join the chorus of those hoping this summer is much less busy, and destructive, than the last one. Read more on pages 16 and 17.

news Flags signal start of lifesaving season Red and yellow flags have been hoisted at surf lifesaving clubs across the Hunter, with beachgoers being warned to expect a summer like no other.

Hotter than average temperatures forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology, coupled with more Australians holidaying locally rather than overseas thanks to COVID-19 travel restrictions, mean beachgoers are expected to flock to Australian beaches in even greater numbers.

A beach visit is expected to look a little different this year as well, with volunteers donning personal protective equipment, and social distancing rules meaning everyone must be 1.5 metres, or a beach towel length, apart.

Hunter Surf Lifesaving president Henry Scruton said the changes were a necessary public safety measure that meant patrolling volunteers could focus solely on keeping swimmers safe in the water.

“We’re predicting large numbers of beachgoers this year,” he said.

“With no overseas visitors, there’ll be a lot more visitors from interstate and within the

NSW bubble. I’m sure they’ll all be flocking to our beautiful beaches as the temperatures rise.”

The beach is expected to sound a little different too, with broadcast communications now including reminders of COVID Safe practices, Mr Scruton said.

“It’s all around social distancing,” he said.

“The broadcasting system will be used to remind beachgoers of the Public Safety Act. “It will say something like: ‘Be aware of social distancing and, if you’ve had your swim, you might consider heading off so others can come and enjoy the water’.

“I’m expecting the community to be really accommodating as this is to protect them at the beach.”

COVID-19 isn’t the only concern for those patrolling the beach.

Surf Life Saving Australia figures revealed last month that the 2019-2020 season was a record season for all the wrong reasons, with drowningrelated fatalities above a 16-year average.

fatalities were recorded, 125 of those drowningrelated, the highest since the 2015-2016 season.

“We’re the good guys,” Mr Scruton said.

“We’re the friendly ones, dressed in red and yellow, trying to keep everyone safe in the water.

“But we need swimmers to do the right thing as well. That means swimming between the flags for a start.”

Hunter Surf Lifesaving’s 8,000 members will be on the beach every weekend until the end of April 2021.

news Woman charged after car drives off cliff at Bar Beach A Wallsend woman is due to reappear in Newcastle Local Court today (1 October) after allegedly driving her car off a cliff and striking a person below.

At about 10.15am last Thursday, emergency services were called to Bar Beach after reports that a Volkswagen Golf had driven over a cliff and landed on the beach.

A 40-year-old woman was struck by the car, while her 18-month-old child narrowly avoided being hit.

The woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 46-year-old woman, was also taken to hospital suffering multiple fractures. She remains in a serious condition.

Police District attended and began an investigation.

Following inquiries, the woman was placed under arrest while in hospital on Friday.

She was charged with drive manner dangerous cause grievous bodily harm and a bedside hearing was conducted, where she was refused bail.

We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021.

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.

There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.

news Australian celebrities show support for koala campaign The plight of Port Stephens’ koalas has gained some A-list support as the local community and some Australian celebrities rally behind a cause to save vital habitat at Brandy Hill.

They are calling on Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley to block the Brandy Hill Quarry expansion project, which will see the quarry expand a further 52 hectares into core koala habitat.

An expert report from the University of Newcastle’s Dr Ryan Witt and Associate Professor John Clulow concluded that the expansion would harm a koala corridor and breeding area.

However, Hanson, the company behind the project, responded to community concerns by stating it strongly believes the commitments

it has made will ensure that the quarry is “developed and operated in an environmentally responsible manner”.

“In approving the proposed expansion for Brandy Hill, a quarry that has been operating for the past 37 years, State Government planning authorities set special conditions for the protection of koala habitats,” Hanson said in a statement.

“These conditions, which have been accepted by Hanson, include the company being required to offset and preserve approximately 450 hectares of koala habitat, which will protect and promote the species.”

However, local resident and activist, Chantal Parslow Redman, believed that, without action, the

project could cause “our koalas to hurtle towards extinction”.

“To have any hope of saving koalas from going extinct the NSW government must urgently intervene to stop the destruction of their homes,” Ms Redman said.

“This decision has to be a turning point where we say no, we will no longer allow koala habitat to be destroyed because we know they are on the way to extinction in NSW and habitat loss is the number one reason.”

Ms Redman is not alone when it

comes to her concerns.

Celebrities Olivia Newton-John, Magda Szubanski, Jimmy Barnes and Shaynna Blaze have all thrown their support behind the campaign.

“This is a community campaign that is now under the international spotlight. The community has had enough,” Ms Redman said.

Minister Ley is expected to make her decision by 13 October.

She was contacted for comment but Newcastle Weekly did not receive a response.

Gemma raises awareness of child exploitation Gemma Crawford doesn’t like to speak openly about the time she was almost abducted as a teen in Indonesia – it’s an experience she says she’d rather forget.

However, it was that frightening situation in 2012 that led the now 25-year-old Novocastrian to commit to bringing awareness to child exploitation.

As the owner of small business ‘Fox and Fawn’, Gemma partnered with Destiny Rescue to highlight the plight of more than one million children each year.

Based in Warabrook, the business is now “giving back” by donating 10% of its proceeds to the group that rescues and re-homes children from slavery.

Gemma’s involvement with the not-for-profit group stems from a lesson she learned when she hit “rock bottom”. In her final year of studying journalism and international

relations at Avondale College, she was seeking a new career path when she experienced a string of traumatic events. This was also the year she was to become a bride.

“I had a few deaths in the family and was hospitalised for health reasons,” she said.

“A lot of things came crashing down and I wasn’t coping.

“In November last year, my husband and I were two weeks out from our wedding when our venue was ravaged by the fires racing through our country.

“I had just broken my foot during a soccer game, and had my car written off in an accident.

“Then, after our wedding, we experienced six weeks together before Jesse (new husband) had to leave for work. Life was really tough for me in 2019.”

Art became therapeutic for Gemma, who says her psychologist

suggested she find a creative outlet.

As part of her business plan, Gemma began making polymer earrings and selling them at local markets, a talent that eventually evolved into her new venture.

While her business grew, so too did her commitment to Destiny Rescue, a group she had learned about in high school. Since 2011, Destiny Rescue has rescued more than 5,200 people enslaved around the world through its various programs.

“Despite how difficult it has been for me recently, it cannot compare to the horrors of the one million children who are exploited in the commercial sex trade each year,” Gemma said.

“The more we’re able to talk about this issue, the more funds will be raised, which will ultimately lead to more children being rescued.”

news Warrior Ethan fights genetic disease When Rutherford’s Ethan Fenn wasn’t meeting his milestones as a baby, his mother Amanda knew something wasn’t right.

“Ethan was our fourth child, so we were pretty experienced by that time,” she said.

“When he was born everything seemed fine, then at 11 months old, it dawned on us he couldn’t sit up by himself and, at that stage, I took him to the doctor.

“We saw the paediatrician and they said: ‘Each child develops at their own rate,’ but that wasn’t good enough for me, I knew there was something wrong, he seemed very fragile, so we got a second opinion and they told me the same thing.

“But I knew something wasn’t right.”

As the saying goes, mother knows best, and Amanda saw a third paediatrician, who gave her different news.

Ethan was diagnosed with cystinosis, a rare genetic disorder that causes an accumulation of the amino acid cystine within cells, forming crystals that can build up and damage the cells.

These crystals negatively affect many systems in the body, especially the kidneys and eyes.

Mrs Fenn discovered the meaning behind the diagnosis on Google after a lack of information from doctors.

She was also pregnant with her fifth child at the time.

“I was waiting for medication and, during that time, I Googled it and found it was an incurable rare disease, which, without treatment, causes death by the age of eight due to complete organ failure,” she said.

“For the rest of that day I had no idea what I was doing, it was a blur. I held him tightly and said: ‘We will get through it together.’”

Mrs Fenn and her husband also turned their concern to their three other children in the fear they too may have the genetic condition.

Luckily, they got the all-clear and then, in time, went for baby number six.

Ethan is now a happy and healthy little boy, who is proving a force to be reckoned with in the karate world.

“COVID ruined tournaments this year but he had one and did quite well, he’s ranked very high up in Australia, he doesn’t let cystinosis stop him from

doing anything to be honest,” Mrs Fenn said.

To celebrate his seventh birthday, Ethan is not asking for presents.

Instead, he has organised a fundraiser for the Cystinosis Research Foundation.

Ethan wants to raise 1 cent for every tablet he has had since diagnosis – that’s $3,965.

news Plea for information on tragic death Ian Pullen was living his dream as a helicopter pilot when he was hit and killed by a motorist near Singleton.

The New Zealander had been in the Hunter for just one day, ready to assist the region in its bushfire season as a Rural Fire Service water bomber.

Just after 5.30am on Saturday 29 September 2018, emergency services were called to Carrington Street at Glenridding after the 43-year-old’s body was located on the side of the road.

Tuesday marked two years since that tragic morning. At the time, detectives from Hunter Valley Police District formed Strike Force Awabakil to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Pullen’s death.

Hunter Valley Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Matthew Zimmer told the media that police were following a new lead after recently receiving an anonymous call about the crime.

“Ian Pullen had come to the region to help the community battle a bushfire threat and to think

that someone struck him with their vehicle and left him to die is abhorrent,” Det Insp Zimmer said.

“We do have information to indicate the occupants of that car returned to the scene and got out of the vehicle and approached Mr Pullen while he was still alive.

“We are very interested in the movements of those individuals after they exited the car and ask that anonymous caller to make contact with us again as there is information we need to clarify with them.”

A $350,000 reward is on offer for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Mr Pullen’s death. Mr Pullen was a family man. He leaves behind his parents, wife, and three children in New Zealand.

“We have spoken to the family this morning – they are aware of the appeal we are making and they want us to pass on to the community how they are struggling,” Det Insp Zimmer said.

“He has a 23-year-old son, a 22-year-old son, and a 15-year-old daughter and they’re going through a really tough time. We’re appealing to members of the community to think of that family,

think of those children without their dad, to come forward to help us with this investigation.

“He was here to help us out, he’d been here one day and this tragic incident occurred, it’s only right that people who know something help us give back to that family and give them some answers.”

Couple’s tireless efforts to protect life and property Lower Hunter firefighter Neil Mutton describes it as the worst bushfire season he has ever seen.

The NSW Rural Fire Service

(RFS) member of 42 years says the 2019/20 campaign was “a hectic and constant” time.

“You never knew where you

were going,” he says.

“We thought we had had it bad, but last year topped it.

“Basically, most of the fires we went to we did nothing but property protection, you couldn’t put it out, so all you could do was protect the assets.

“We just had to look after life and property.”

He adds that it got to the point where he and his wife, Alison, a volunteer of 30-odd years, always had an overnight bag ready to go wherever they were needed.

As Group Captain for the Lower Hunter, Mr Mutton offers leadership and advice to seven brigades across the region.

While it doesn’t come without its challenges, he says being a part of the RFS has led to some of the best experiences he’s ever had.

“You meet so many interesting

people,” he says.

“The interesting thing about it is you can go on a fire ground and not know if you’re talking to a barrister, a doctor, or a pensioner.”

The 60-year-old became a part of the service because he was, as he puts it, in “the wrong place at the wrong time”.

“I was actually getting my ute checked for registration and the fella that was doing it said: ‘Come and help us put out a fire and I’ll get the job done quicker,’” he says.

“From that day on, I have been there ever since.”

His wife Alison then “married into it” and their two children grew up knowing mum and dad were helping the community.

In 2018, Mr Mutton was lucky enough to be nominated in the Queen’s Honours list for an Australian Fire Service Medal.

“That blew me over,” he says.

“I had to go to Government House to receive the medal from his excellency, David Hurley.

“That would be the highlight of it all.

“We had afternoon tea on the lawn, and it hit home what it all meant. It was something I won’t forget.”

Mr Mutton is hopeful that this year’s fire season will be better than the last.

“It’s a little bit unknown at the moment,” he says.

“But [I am hopeful] it won’t be anywhere near as bad as what we have had.”

Mr Mutton believes the prediction for a wetter than normal season and access to water in dams will help in any fights they face.

sport Rugby powerhouses line-up shot at ‘mini World Cup’ World-class rugby is set to grace McDonald Jones Stadium when the Wallabies, world champions South Africa and international heavyweights New Zealand arrive in Newcastle this November.

A six-week Rugby Championship 2020, labelled as a ‘mini World Cup’, will start at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, followed by back-to-back fixtures in Sydney, before making its way to the Hunter.

Novocastrian fans will be treated to a mouth-watering double header on Saturday 28 November, with Australia taking on Argentina prior to an epic battle between the Springboks and the All Blacks.

The tournament will be the first test for world champions South Africa since their 32-12 World Cup final victory against England in

November 2019, as well as for new Wallabies coach Dave Rennie.

Rugby Australia Interim Chief Executive, Rob Clarke, lauded the championship as a fantastic opportunity for rugby fans. “[It’s] six unmissable back-to-back double headers featuring four of the very best Test nations in world rugby – all in our backyard,” Clarke said.

Rainbow pancakes The perfect school holiday recipe is here, and you can sneak some goodness into the beloved breakfast staple. We bring you these rainbow pancakes, courtesy of Nexba.

Pancake batter

For the turmeric orange, add:

2 cups self-raising flour

1/4 cup orange juice

2 eggs, whisked

1 tsp turmeric powder

3/4 cup oat milk 3/4 cup Nexba kombucha (we used elderflower and lemon, but you can choose any flavour) 1 tsp vanilla essence 1-2 Tbsp coconut oil, to cook For the savoury matcha, add: 1/4 cup spinach leaves 1/4 cup lime juice

For the super blue, add: 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 tsp blue spirulina Chocolate tahini sauce 3 Tbsp cacao powder 1 1/2 tbsp hulled tahini 1/4 cup orange juice 1-2 tsp rice malt syrup

1-2 tsp matcha powder

Place flour in a large mixing bowl.

Create a well in the centre and add the whisked eggs. Gently mix.

Add oat milk, Nexba Kombucha and vanilla essence. Mix well. Separate pancake batter into three bowls.

Savoury matcha pancakes For the savoury matcha pancakes, combine spinach leaves and lime juice in a high-power blender. Blend until spinach leaves are pureed and there are no chunks. Add spinach blend to one of the pancake bowls.

Mix well and stir through matcha powder. Set aside.

Turmeric orange pancakes To prepare the turmeric-orange pancakes, add orange juice and turmeric powder to the second bowl.

Mix well. To prepare the chocolate tahini sauce, combine all sauce ingredients in a small mixing bowl.

Mix well. Add boiling water until desired consistency is reached. Set aside.

Super-blue pancakes Add lemon juice and blue spirulina to the third pancake batter bowl for the super-blue pancakes. Mix well. Add more spirulina if you’d like a more vibrant colour.

Place a small amount of coconut oil in a non-stick pan and allow to melt over medium heat.

Spoon approximately 1/4 cup of the pancake mix (you can start with any flavour) into the pan and leave to cook for 1-2 minutes or until it starts to bubble. Flip and cook the other side a further minute.

Repeat this process for the remaining pancake batter. Stack, serve and enjoy!

Serve matcha pancakes with sliced avocado, lime and/or sprouts; turmeric orange pancakes with the chocolate tahini sauce; and the super blue pancakes with lemon juice, fresh blueberries and/or a touch of rice malt syrup.

Mural art helps teens think outside box A giant platypus marks the start of a school art project that is the product of a Newcastle artist thinking outside the box.

Launched at Warners Bay High School last week, Mural in a Box is a “COVID-19 friendly way of enabling schools to create art murals and learn from artists without needing to be onsite”.

The business is the brainchild of Novocastrian friends Jacinta Fintan and Natalie Sherring, joining forces with Sydney artist CRISP. The trio have created a mural kit that can be delivered to schools and contains all the ingredients needed to install a mural on their chosen site.

The kit includes videos and resources that align with visual arts curriculum.

Co-founder Jacinta Fintan said the business was already gaining much attention.

“There is nothing like this in Australia and we’ve had an incredible amount of interest so far,” she said.

“Everything you need to install the mural with students at your school is in the box.

“Our mural templates mean that you don’t need special painting skills to get a professional result. Students will be able to watch CRISP’s artist talk and installation guide on video and then create something beautiful for their community.”

School trips to Canberra may have been cancelled due to COVID-19, but you can still get a taste of one of the capital’s most popular experiences during Questacon’s Colour exhibition at Newcastle Museum.

Launched just before the school holidays, this special touring exhibition explores the science of colour and perception through more than 20 different interactive experiences.

Set up in a COVID Safe space in the Supernova Gallery, Colour allows visitors to discover how light influences colour and why we all see colour differently, using everything from coloured bubbles and iridescent insects to spectacular fluorescent rocks and colour illusions. Tourism cruising back to Lake Macquarie A group of Cardiff South Primary School students were among two dozen passengers treated to a sneakpeak at school holiday cruising.

The invite-only event last Friday marked the return to cruising on Lake Macquarie.

Sisters Maea and Larni Andrews and their friends Marli and Laila Nesbitt were lucky enough to spend their final day of Term 3 onboard the Lady Mac as it returned to the water after six months in drydock.

Formally known as the River Princess, the vessel ceased operation in March due to COVID-19.

During the break, it underwent extensive equipment and machinery upgrades, as well as an interior refurbishment and fit-out.

After positive signs that the city’s tourism industry was bouncing

back, with increased bookings from Sydneysiders, Lake Macquarie Cruises director Peter Hanrahan said he and his crew were keen to get back in the bay.

“It’s exciting to be back on the water and providing a family-focused tourism attraction that will help more people discover our incredible lake,” he said.

“This is an hour-and-a-half cruise and we drop the net straight away.

“It’s full of kids the whole time.

“We just swap the kids in and out as we go and finish up with a sausage sizzle.

“For school holidays in particular, the cruise is all about the boom net.”

Boom netting involves riding in a secure, sturdy net that is attached to the back of the vessel.

Call for artists to join Newcastle Fringe The Newcastle Fringe Festival is back and plans to be bigger and better than ever before.

Organisers were forced to cancel the 2020 festival just two days prior to its launch due to COVID-19 restrictions.

However, Jonathan Biggins has agreed to help promote next year’s edition by being the firstever Newcastle Fringe Celebrity Ambassador.

Biggins has come a long way since he played guitar in the Musical Flags – a retro surf bubble-gum pop band that was the precursor to the more famous Castanet Club back in the early 80s, but he still has a soft spot for his hometown of Newcastle.

When asked to become a Celebrity Ambassador for the

Newcastle Fringe Festival, he was only too happy to oblige.

“I like giving back to the community that I hailed from,” Biggins says.

“Fringe represents artistic endeavour at its most grassroots level.

“I want to help people recognise its value, to support the artists that produce it, to acknowledge that the arts play a vital role in a healthy society, and to help get that message across.”

He sees the arts as critical at a time when fake news and conspiracy theories are blurring the truth and affecting our democracy.

Label merges fashion with functionality Walking to work, city living, pinched toes and waistlines that are too tight.

For Bec Boyle, it was these experiences that inspired her to create a line of clothing that was comfortable and can be dressed up

or down, to suit any occasion.

Originally from Newcastle, Ms Boyle moved to Sydney to study at The Whitehouse Institute of Design.

From there, she graduated with both a Bachelor and Masters

in Fashion Design. She lived in Sydney for six years, interning with fashion powerhouses like Vogue, Rebecca Vallance and Camilla, before branching out on her own.

“In February 2019, I signed myself up to do a business course because I wanted to start my own label,” Ms Boyle said.

“Straight after that I went into creating things for the brand and then launched in March the following year.”

The women’s athleisure wear label self-named ‘Bec Boyle’ blurs the lines between clothes you’d wear to the gym, work and lunch.

“It taps into the trend of the casualisation of workplace wear,” Ms Boyle said.

“Add a blazer, or sneakers, and if you’re travelling you don’t need to iron, they’re wrinkle free, light weight, and quick drying.”

Without a doubt, what makes these digitally enhanced textile prints stand out is their vibrant colours and designs.

Every line has a theme, with her

designs often mixing influences of travel, culture, history, fabrics, prints, and silhouettes.

“I design all the prints, so they’ve always been bright and out there,” she said.

“They’re always themed, so the line launched in March is glam rock, while my previous work through university has been Chinese, underwater, and African.”

While Bec Boyle is available online, the glam rock collection is also stocked at Fever Dream in Mayfield, and The Grateful in Carrington.

Ms Boyle has also joined forces with the Sunflowers for Jess charity, which raises money to support the recovery and rehabilitation of Newcastle surf lifesaver Jessica Collins, after a freak surfing accident in 2018 left her a quadriplegic.

She’s designed face masks in collaboration with the charity, which will be worn by lifesavers across Newcastle beaches over summer.

A hopeful farewell to unsettled spring Today – the first day of October – I hope we are saying farewell to an unsettled spring, from hot to freezing cold and snow on the Barrington’s.

There are many plants that object to spring weather going up and down like a yo-yo, so I am bracing myself for many enquiries about passionfruit.

It may help with fruiting by reducing trailing arms to about 60 centimetres so that nutrients are going into leaf production rather than blossom.

It will also help to fertilise with cow manure and weekly applications of Flourish for Fruiting.

The winds have been incredibly drying; be sure to water regularly, particularly deciduous trees and shrubs, which will be desperately attempting to boost sap to leaf growth at the top.

For example: Golden Robinias and ‘Mop Tops’ and any newly planted bare rooted trees, which require a good drink daily.

I feel guilty when I look at my avenue of Catalpas (which really don’t like our climate), they are struggling to have a good spring burst – a good indicator of this are leafless branches at the top of these beautiful standards.

Walking down my driveway, I noticed that my hedge of Gardenia Florida are desperately trying to bud and they are covered in sooty mould, which I had missed as I normally drive down. I realised then that they would have scale as well.

Double trouble (no, really, triple trouble) as their leaves are yellowing. I am suspecting this may be happening in many gardens. Yellow leaves can be attributed to lack of water (I’m guilty) so, as well as a good drink, I will feed them with cow manure and, if yellow leaves persist, I’ll water chelated iron over the hedge to improve colour quality.

under the leaves – I’ll spray with Malathon and White Oil, followed a couple of days later by Copper Oxychloride to hit the sooty mould.

Don’t be discouraged by my experience to plant gardenias as this is the first time since planting 20 years ago that they are unhappy.

No doubt readers will think my garden is in dire need when I go on to my next problem, but I am sure it’s one we are all familiar with at this time every year – aphids.

Oh my gosh! I have never seen my standard roses covered in so many aphids. This happens on all the lush growth after pruning when they are about to bud up – my solution of a spray with pyrethrum (late in the afternoon when the bees have gone to bed) may not have worked. I might resort to a rose spray or, if worst comes to worst, Malathon, both of which I will try after the bees have gone to bed.

AN AUDIENCE Something’s that been lacking from my life for most of the year but there’s nothing more satisfying than having an audience in the palm of your hand, that sweet moment when they’re laughing until it hurts but you know you’ve got a zinger coming up to finish them off completely.

My favourite things CLASSICAL MUSIC Not cool to admit it, I’m sure, but there’s nothing better. The great composers have a genius that transcends the cheapening of that word and I think it’s the one art form that can bring you to tears without manipulating you as, say, film does. There is something elemental in music’s effect upon the brain.

My local beach when growing up and still the best beach I know that caters for everyone from babies to adults.

There’s the kid’s rock pools north of the breakwater, the slightly more mature bathing area bordered by the turnbuckles and then the surf beach. Perfect.

NEWCASTLE FRINGE FESTIVAL AMBASSADOR

He’s come a long way since he played guitar in the Musical Flags – a retro surf bubble-gum pop band that was the precursor to the more famous Castanet Club back in the early 80s, but Jonathan Biggins still has a soft spot for his hometown of Newcastle. When asked to become a Celebrity Ambassador for the Newcastle Fringe Festival, Jonathan was only too happy to oblige. “I like giving back to the community that I hailed from,” Jonathan says. “Fringe represents artistic endeavour at its most grassroots level. I want to help people recognise its value, to support the artists that produce it, to acknowledge that the arts play a vital role in a healthy society and to help get that message across.”

GOZLEME Basically, it’s a pizza that you can delude yourself is better for health reasons, particularly if you choose a spinach hybrid. There’s a stall at our local markets and three Turkish women churn them out like there’s no tomorrow – they’ll be able to retire soon.

ENGINEERING At this point I will never be a civil engineer and I’m sure I have political objections to much of what they build – roads, coal loaders, that sort of thing – but I secretly have enormous admiration for the skill and ingenuity of large scale construction. I think it’s because I enjoyed LEGO as a child.

Who am I kidding? I still do!
