From the editor We have had some high-profile visitors to the region this month. Firstly, it was Thor, aka Aussie celebrity Chris Hemsworth, who was spotted in the Upper Hunter at both Scone and Gundy. For those who aren’t familiar with Hemsworth, he is a Hollywood actor best known for his role in eight Marvel films, beginning with Thor in 2011 and appearing most recently in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Suffice to say, our office was more than happy to report on his visit to the Hunter. And, while he may not pull at the heartstrings to the same extent, Prime Minister Scott Morrison then popped into Newcastle on Tuesday to announce the Federal Government’s plan if energy companies do not step up and cover the closure of Liddell power station. It would have been the trifecta if LEGO Masters judge (and this week’s cover star) Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught also made an appearance next week. McNaught is stuck in lockdown in Melbourne, but he’s still excited about the opportunity to showcase his work and the chance to help create happiness amongst both children and adults. news Campaign opens hearts and homes to children in need For Maitland’s Sharron Thomas, becoming a foster carer was a chance to give children a safe place to call home. “It’s not easy but it is very rewarding,” she says. “I suppose knowing that you’re offering a home to children whose parents can’t care for them is the best part. “These kids deserve to feel loved and safe.” The mother-of-four aims to make every child that passes through her door feel like part of the family. “From day one, I decided that I couldn’t treat any child that came in my front door like they weren’t here forever,” she says. “We start enrolling in drama classes and swimming classes and we do all those sorts of things that

any other child would get to do.” Mrs Thomas adds that her own children are incredibly supportive of the foster children. “One of my biological sons is so beautiful, and the other foster children in our home are so accommodating when a new child comes into our home,” she says. “They are appreciative of where they have been, they want to help them to fit in, they’re very friendly and respectful.” Mrs Thomas and her husband Matthew have been carers since 2017 and, in those three years, they have welcomed eight children into their home. The couple currently has three children in their care and, while it hasn’t come without its challenges, Mrs Thomas says they will be carers for as long as possible.

Their vital work is now being put in the spotlight as part of Foster and Kinship Care Week (Sunday 13 to Saturday 19 September). The campaign provides the community with a chance to celebrate foster and kinship carers, while it also marks the start of a new recruitment drive. Currently, an estimated 350 carer households are needed across the state. NSW Minister for Families, Communities and Disability

Services, Gareth Ward, says it is imperative to find children a safe and stable place to call home. “We need people who are willing to open their hearts and their homes to kids in care, either temporarily or permanently, so that we can continue our work to improve the lives of the most vulnerable children in our state,” he says. news Drought response plant a step closer to approval A proposed Drought Response Desalination Plant at Belmont is a step closer to approval following the release of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Amendment Report. Hunter Water has called on the Lower Hunter community to view the amendment report to understand changes to the initial proposal and how the water utility has responded to community feedback raised in submissions to the original EIS late last year. Managing Director Darren Cleary says the release of the report is an important step in seeking planning approval for the plant, even though there’s no intention to start construction. “The proposed plant is an on-theshelf insurance policy and would provide the region with added water

security in the unlikely event storage levels drop to critical levels,” Mr Cleary says. “The proposal forms part of our portfolio of actions in response to drought, which include extensive water conservation measures, minimising water loss by reducing leakage, operating Tomago Sandbeds, and water transfers between regions.” Mr Cleary says water users in the Lower Hunter will benefit from additional water security in a severe drought under the plan to increase drinking water output from the proposed desalination plant. “As we foreshadowed in May, our investigations into a Drought Response Desalination Plant have informed changes we believe offer greater reliability, improved efficiency

and still deliver value for money,” he says. “The amendment report seeks planning approval for an increased plant capacity to produce up to 30 million litres of drinking water per day during an extreme drought, double the output capacity of the original design.” Hunter Water is also proposing modifications to the seawater intake, changing the design to incorporate a direct ocean seawater intake system, which involves piping seawater from

news Hearty response to restaurant’s ‘Pay it Forward’ initiative amid tough times Billabongs restaurant at East Maitland Bowling Club has long been a favourite for locals. On a normal day, before COVID-19, a whopping 450 people would pass through its doors to enjoy all-you can-eat, buffet style dining. Now, it’s attracting just 35 people per day. “Things have changed, we are only operating at 10% and are closed three days,” owner Jenny Po said. During the peak of the pandemic, Billabongs was doing takeaway and deliveries, but noticed many of the club’s elderly members couldn’t pay over the phone because they didn’t have a credit card. That’s when the ‘Pay it Forward’ initiative was born. Every June, the club hosts an event where it offers elderly members a free meal. This was, of course, cancelled. So, it was suggested that customers who were purchasing takeaway could donate five dollars to go towards a meal for people in need in the community.

“The response was overwhelming,” Mrs Po said. “It was incredibly nerve wracking – we were not sure if it would work or not, but everyone started calling up and donating money.” The club then tapped into its database to see who usually attended the June event, and delivered them meals. “I did a few deliveries and you see them sitting on the porch waiting for this meal to be delivered and it puts a smile on your face,” Mrs Po said. That first week, the restaurant staff delivered 40 meals. “Now our doors are open for dining, people have heard about the initiative and, when they pay their bill, they contribute their money,” she said. The initiative has since expanded to provide anyone in need with a meal, and the calls are flooding in. “We have neighbours call, younger people call in for an older couple who don’t have anyone who can drop in a meal for them, so it’s nice to know people are caring and looking after each other in

these times,” Mrs Po said. “We dropped one to Medowie to a family who had two children with disabilities and the mum was on her own. “That’s out of our range, but we still did it.” Mrs Po said that, as long as people keep donating, the restaurant will continue delivering meals. So far, 500 meals have been distributed to the local community. - Emma Murphy

news Student nominated for humanity award Vienna Outram has been bringing a smile to the face of strangers from the day she was born. Her mother, Sarah Purvis, says the Year 6 Belmont Primary School student has been a beacon of kindness since passers-by stopped the single mother in the street to comment on Vienna’s smile. Vienna will soon be recognised for this attribute publicly after being nominated for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award 2020. She is one of 200 Australian Year 6 students in the running to be recognised “for demonstrating compassion, integrity and kindness towards others”, with one junior ambassador from each state and territory to be selected. The junior Novocastrian was nominated by her teacher, Ms Bull, who said Vienna “embodies the values of compassion, integrity and kindness in everything she does”. “An example of Vienna’s compassion and kindness was during our learning from home period at the end of Term 1 and the start of Term 2,” she said. “A friend of Vienna’s in another class was

unable to access our online learning due to not having devices (besides her mobile phone) and internet at home. “Each day, Vienna would take screenshots of the work and text them to her friend. “She then followed this up by calling her friend to explain each activity and how she could complete the task without a device. “She did this without being asked.” For Vienna, the act of kindness was a fight for equality. “She (friend) isn’t as lucky as me,” Vienna said. “She doesn’t have a laptop. “I just wanted to make sure she could keep up with her work.” The eleven-year-old, who reiterates is “turning 12 soon”, believes everyone has a role to play in being kind. “For example, if you have more toilet paper and someone else needs it, you need to give,” she said. Since 2012, the Fred Hollows Humanity Award has recognised more than 1,500 students

news Prime Minister visits Hunter to reveal energy plan Energy companies need to step up and fill the gap left by the closure of Liddell power station, or the Federal Government will act. That’s the message from Prime Minister Scott Morrison, which he delivered during a visit to WesTrac Tomago on Tuesday. In an address to the Hunter Business Chamber, Mr Morrison said a taskforce had assessed the potential impacts of Liddell’s closure in 2023 and found wholesale prices could jump by 30%, or $20 per megawatt (MW) hour, if the station’s capacity was not replaced before it shuts down. “We estimate that some 1,000 MW of new dispatchable generation is needed to keep prices down, and we intend to do something about it,” he said.

“While the private sector has announced projects which could fill this gap, it has committed to very few. COVID has challenged investment metrics, but the physical realities of ageing generators mean we can’t just hope for the best. “So, this is the plan. If the energy companies choose to step up and make these investments to create that capacity, great, we will step back. “If not, my government will step up, and we will fill the gap.” Managing Director and Chief Executive of Commonwealth-owned Snowy Hydro, Paul Broad, said the body was developing plans to build a gas generator on the site of the former Hydro Aluminium smelter site at Kurri Kurri. “The site we have is very close to

the Sydney Newcastle pipeline, it’s very close to transmission lines, we have done a lot of background work to make sure, if we get the green light, we are ready to roll.” Mr Morrison said the Federal Government would prefer not to step in. “That is not our Plan A. But nor will we shy away from taking action to protect consumers and support jobs, including here in this region and so many like it,” he said.

Hunter Business Chamber Chief Executive, Bob Hawes, said the visit from the Prime Minister was positive for future investment in the region. “If we have other projects and initiatives up here – be it hydrogen, solar, wind, whatever they are – and they stack up and make sense and there’s investment there ready to get behind them, let’s do it,” Mr Hawes said. - Emma Murphy

news Parker loses locks to help kids with cancer

Nine-year-old Parker Solberg is feeling a little lighter this week after losing his luscious red locks for a worthy cause on Saturday. The charismatic youngster had been growing his hair for two years in order to donate it to Variety for red-headed children facing cancer while raising money for Camp Quality. “I just wanted to help another red-haired kid so they could have the same hair colour,” he said. His exact words when he made the decision in 2018 were: “It’s not fair rangas [can] get cancer and can’t have their same hair colour”. However, the decision to grow out his hair did not come without some challenges. Parker said his hair was thick and had lots of knots. At times, he’d sit in tears as he had to get his dreads brushed out.

Initially, he wanted to donate $200 to Camp Quality. This was his goal because he did not think anyone would want to donate but, in two days, he smashed that target, raising $1,000. The final total, as of Tuesday morning, was $2,179. Parker’s family, friends, and the community rallied behind him at Largs Park, near Maitland. He added that his friends were excited for him to get it cut and, when asked if he would ever do it again, he said he might consider it in a few years. “I want short hair for a while, maybe in a couple of years I’ll do it again,” he said. Historic walk The revitalised Morpeth Heritage Walk is ready for the community and visitors to enjoy. The popular activity takes participants on a journey to 25 significant sites, and tells the story of the historic town of Morpeth through the eyes of key characters. news Redevelopment to bring up No.1 Sportsground’s century Newcastle’s No.1 Sportsground will undergo a major redevelopment to mark its 100th anniversary. The project, which includes enlarging the playing field, upgrading the lighting and building new tiered seating, is scheduled for completion in mid-2021. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said redeveloping No.1 Sportsground was an apt way to celebrate the facility notching up its ‘maiden century.’ “We’re eagerly anticipating the sportsground entering its centenary year in 2021 and look forward to being able to celebrate this milestone moment with a significantly upgraded facility,” Cr Nelmes said. “This project will not only benefit those within our community who utilise it for grassroots and regional

level sport, but will also have a widerreaching impact on Newcastle’s economy through its potential to attract and host first class cricket and pre-season AFL fixtures.” The staged works include increasing the size of the playing field to achieve the minimum standard required for a first grade AFL match, constructing seven new cricket wickets, and rebuilding the entire playing surface. A new sub-soil irrigation and drainage system will provide a high quality, consistent playing surface, while the installation of six new 40-metre light poles will upgrade the lighting to a standard suitable for night games. New sight screens, player dug-out benches and oval fencing will also improve the playing experience,

Newcastle will look to bounce back from a heavy loss to the Sydney Roosters when the club faces St George Illawarra at McDonald Jones Stadium this weekend.

The Knights were outclassed in their round 18 match-up with the Roosters as the defending premiers thumped the visitors 42-12. Sydney kept up with the clock early on as tries to Josh Morris, Daniel Tupou and Luke Keary powered them to an 18-0 lead after just 16 minutes. It threatened to turn ugly when a Joseph Manu four-pointer, followed by another successful conversion by Kyle Flanagan, made it 24-0 in the 22nd minute. The Knights hit back as Enari Tuala and Gehamat Shibasaki both scored, but the Roosters struck just before the break via superstar fullback James Tedesco. Tupou then grabbed his second try early in the second period and Keary scored again with 10 minutes to go to complete the rout. Newcastle will tackle the Dragons from 4.05pm this Sunday 20 September.

LEGO exhibition lands in Newcastle Having an appreciation of the colour white and an understanding of mathematics. According to Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught, these two things are an important part of being a LEGO master. McNaught, one of 14 certified LEGO professionals in the world, is best known for starring alongside Hamish Blake on Channel Nine’s LEGO Masters. However, the building bricks have not always been a part of his life. “I loved LEGO as a kid, as most people tend to,” he said. “But then, when I was 12 or 13, it became uncool, so I put it away to fit in. “When I had kids, my twins got

into it, so I got back into it that way. “I love that I have unlimited creativity, nothing has defeated me yet.” Novocastrians will get to see McNaught’s passion in action as his latest exhibition builds its way into town from Friday 25 September. Newcastle Entertainment Centre will host the exhibition, which features 36 models. One of the most anticipated models is the world’s first life-size LEGO Harley Davidson, while another that is sure to impress will be a three-metre tall killer whale. McNaught said the various models took around six months to build with a mammoth two million LEGO bricks. Despite his disappointment

at missing this year’s exhibition because of Melbourne’s ongoing lockdown, McNaught is still excited about the opportunity to showcase his work and the chance to create happiness. “In the time that we are in now, any chance to provide someone with joy is great,” he said. “My team and I have had a great time building all these recordbreaking models, so I can’t wait to share them with fans and families in Newcastle.” For McNaught, the best part of an exhibition is seeing people appreciate his work. “A lot of [the models] take so long to build, so often we don’t get the sense of achievement until someone sees it,” he said.

Sisters make cut in stories on city’s past Everyone’s got a story about Newcastle, according to Glenn Dormand. As half of the filmmaking pair responsible for Stories Of Our Town, Dormand is keen to help bring the city’s past back to life through the lens. Also known as Chit Chat Von Loopin Stab from his former days in band Machine Gun Fellatio, he has released the third of a set of 12 films showcasing some of the industrial city’s quirkiest tales. “The stories are coming at us all the time,” Dormand says. “They are little portals into our past.” In their latest film, The Scott Sisters of Ash Island, Dormand and filmmaking partner Tony Whittaker regale viewers with the story of teenage illustrators Harriet and Helena Scott, who lived on the island on Newcastle’s western edge during the mid1800s. The siblings spent their days illustrating the island’s flora and fauna in a time when women were not allowed to study science. Their most renowned drawings are those of the island’s butterflies, moths and caterpillars, which are still referred to in botanic circles 170 years later. “The Scott Sisters was a joy to make because a lot of

people didn’t know about them,” Dormand says. “It’s like a band you didn’t know about and just discovered, and then you can’t get enough of them.” Dormand, whose father moved to Newcastle from England in the late 1930s, was keen to escape the steel city as a teenager. He has since returned with a renewed love for the coastal backdrop after becoming a parent himself. “I ran away from here,” he says. “Now I’ve had kids I’ve fallen in love with Newcastle again in a powerful way. “I appreciate it more and now I want to capture that feeling and share it with others.” Dormand hopes audiences will also appreciate the historical accuracy of the films, which are thanks to an array of local services such as the Port of Newcastle, University of Newcastle, the Newcastle Museum, Newcastle Library, Newcastle Art Gallery, and several media outlets. “We rely on our academics to source the facts and stories like the Scott Sisters, which took place some time ago, but, for the more recent stories, we wanted to talk to people on the ground,” he says.

Tome draws attention to natural forces Experienced artist Matthew Tome wants to draw attention to the natural forces that we perceive but can’t see during his upcoming exhibition this month. Tome has been developing work for the exhibition, titled Energy Field, since establishing a studio at The Creator Incubator in Hamilton North last year. These works use abstracted forms, line, shape, edge and variations of transparency, opacity, painterly and graphic means in a speculative way. The work aims to be both sensual and intellectual. Lavender’s favourite time of year Started sneezing yet? I have. Spring has sprung and the days are windy, blowing pollen around. I begin sneezing instantly when I walk into the courtyard at the nursery; the bees are out and the boronia is in flower and highly perfumed. Spring certainly is lavender’s favourite time of the year. The French Lavender is budding and about to burst into bloom. The beauty of this lavender is that its flowering period is from now through to February and, in coastal areas, it is the better performer. Strong, healthy plants can be achieved by a hard pruning when flowering fi nishes, but this can be done from an early age. Lavender can have an overrated reputation of being hardy. Yes, it can withstand extremes of heat and cold, but it suffers during humid conditions. It is wise to plant in the sunniest spot in the garden, making sure it is planted in well-drained soil. If its roots are in wet soil, it may simply drop dead. Lavender will grow in acidic or alkaline

soil with plenty of air circulation. During humid weather, watch for signs of fungus and start a spraying program with Mancozeb or copper oxychloride. There are many different types of lavender marketed now, most only flowering once a year. English Lavender does have the best perfume, flowering from November to February, but it can be difficult to grow, particularly at that time because of Australia’s humid conditions. We gardeners alike love the perfume of lavender, which is one of the most popular small shrubs around the world. There are approximately 20 species and numerous varieties – thousands of acres are grown here and in Europe for lavender oil, which is mainly used in cosmetics and soaps. Lavender is ideal for hot, dry places and sandy soils. Grown in heavier soil, drainage must be good, despite lavender’s ability to withstand dry periods. Young plants do need soil to remain

moist through their fi rst period of growing during our summer season. If you wish to propagate by cuttings, these are best taken in autumn and treated with rooting hormones.
