This week... From the editor While I was watching ‘You vs. Wild’ – a reality television show featuring Bear Grylls, a former British SAS serviceman and adventurer – my housemate, apparently an expert in survival, was offering countless advice on how he would do things differently. One episode focused on how to track a dog that had become lost in the elements (in this scenario, it was the Swiss Alps). My housemate, also a would-be tough guy and alpha male, commented: “As if you’d risk your life trying to save a dog”. I’m sure many of us would disagree. I’ve rarely been as upset as when I found out our family dog, Bonnie, an 11-year-old mixed breed (Staffy-Labrador), had to undergo surgery to remove an aggressive growth. This growth turned out to be the size of a netball, according to the veterinarians, and weighed 3.1 kilograms. Fortunately, she’s recovering well and is already back to her mischievous ways. We can learn a lot from animals and, for many people, they are a loyal, friendly companion, which is exactly what’s needed right now. Our cover star this week is 10-year-old Mollyjane, an official Jeans for Genes Day ambassador. Read all about her incredible journey, and fighting spirit, on page 13. - Ben Murphy

news Rocky road in fight against retinoblastoma

Rocky Sefo’s mum, Kara, wants the community to know that taking a photo of your child with the flash on can help detect retinoblastoma.

Two-year-old Rocky Sefo is facing a battle most adults could not even imagine. Since he was just four-months-old, he has been fighting for his life against retinoblastoma – an eye cancer that begins in the retina.

His mum, Kara, had noticed something reflective in his eye but, because he was a happy and healthy baby, assumed it wasn’t anything serious. “When he was about four-months-old, we noticed that he had a bit of a lazy eye and I remember one night looking over at him while he was having some tummy time [and] he had a reflective spot in his eye a bit like a marble or cat’s eye,” Kara says. “At six-months-old, we took him to our GP, but he didn’t notice much so he referred us to an ophthalmologist to be safe. “A month later, we were at the appointment for two hours and they found he had a big mass behind his left eye and that we needed to be at Westmead Children’s Hospital the next day.” So, in 2018, at just seven-months-old, Rocky was rushed to Sydney, where doctors discovered the cancer. What followed was the fight of his life, with there being a risk the mass in his eye could lead to a tumour in his brain. After finishing a round of chemotherapy later

in the year, things were starting to look up for Rocky, but a routine checkup in January 2019 discovered new tumours had grown. “By the time we got to September he needed chemotherapy directly injected into the eye,” Kara says. “And, then, this year things got a bit crazy – it had advanced so badly that they needed to remove his eye. “So, in March they removed his eye, but that wasn’t the end of the battle.” Rocky started chemotherapy again late last month and he will have to endure six cycles of the treatment over the next six months. Kara is sharing Rocky’s story in a bid to save other children’s lives. She wants parents to know that a photo taken using a flash can detect the disease in the eye, as any growth will reflect and appear like a marble. news Council considers renaming Captain Cook fountain Councillor Allan Robinson has hit out at City of Newcastle’s decision to consider the process of renaming council buildings or features so they are “culturally appropriate,” labelling it “embarrassing”. City of Newcastle councillors voted last week to investigate the move, while also supporting a motion to seek community consultation about renaming the Captain James Cook Memorial Fountain in Civic Park. Part of this decision includes the removal of two Captain James Cook memorial plaques attached to the Civic Park Fountain, which state: ‘To commemorate the Bi-Centenary of the Discovery of the East Coast of Australia 1770 – 1970.’ Cr Robinson acknowledged his own Indigenous background before slamming the move.

“I might be the only Indigenous person on the council and, from all the dealings I have with people who are Indigenous or Torres Strait Islander, I can’t believe we are even discussing taking Captain Cook’s name off a plaque, it’s pretty disappointing actually,” he said. “I truly don’t hear that there’s upheaval over stuff like this. “It’s embarrassing and very, very disappointing. “At the end of the day to even have this brought up is not productive.” Completed in 1966, Margel Hinder’s water sculpture was known simply as the Civic Park Fountain. It was renamed the Captain James Cook Memorial Fountain in 1970 – a decision by the then council to receive a grant from the Local Government Assistance Fund under the NSW

Department of Local Government. While the grant enabled council to do a second stage of works around the fountain, including the handrails on the stairs, it also meant that the fountain would have to serve as the City’s Captain Cook Memorial. Cr John Mackenzie was in favour of removing the plaques, telling the Newcastle Weekly they were historically inaccurate. “The idea that Captain Cook discovered the east coast of Australia is clearly false and antiquated

thinking,” he said. “It also isn’t harmless – that language reflects the fiction of terra nullius that has been used to write Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people out of Australian history for 250 years. “Removing historically offensive monuments won’t bring about reconciliation but celebrating them and being dishonest about what they mean will stall reconciliation permanently.” - Emma Murphy

Major coup for Cockle Creek precinct Two new projects are set to see a Costco store and 500 new dwellings call Lake Macquarie home. It comes after the NSW Government announced last week that Costco Wholesale Australia and Green Capital Group would be a part of the transformation of the Cockle Creek precinct. Minister for Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey, said these projects would inject about $300 million into the local economy and create hundreds of jobs. “The fact that Costco is choosing Cockle Creek as the location for its first regional operation in

NSW is a major coup and that allows for hundreds of new jobs and ongoing economic stimulus,” she said. “The Green Capital residential development will also deliver much-needed new homes, creating more than 500 new dwellings as part of a multi-staged development, and contributing approximately 400 FTE [full-time equivalent] jobs during construction.” Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper welcomed the timing of the announcement. “It’s almost 20 years since the Pasminco smelter was closed, and after years of site remediation,

news Volunteers unite to target city’s single-use plastics A swarm of volunteers will unite across Lake Macquarie to target single-use plastics this weekend. Lake Macquarie Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance Secretary, Stephen Dewar, says the clean-ups will give the community a chance to reconnect and make a difference. “This clean-up is part of our attempt to help the community and encourage them to [stop using] single-use plastic,” he says. According to Mr Dewar, evidence is showing that there has been an increase in the use of single-use plastic during the pandemic. “We’ve been running a campaign about single-use plastics and we thought we should do something about it,” he says. “Even though some of our public places have been quieter over the

last few months, we’ve noticed that there’s still far too much litter around.” Mr Dewar encourages the community to pitch in to “make sure this rubbish doesn’t end up in our creeks, lake or ocean, or harming our wildlife”. He adds that, during the “COVID crisis”, it has been difficult to continue their campaigns because many people and businesses are turning to single-use plastics. The five planned events across Lake Macquarie are going to look very different to the alliance’s typical clean-up. The pandemic means organisers have had to cap numbers and put COVID-safe measures in place. All attendees are required to register before attending the event

and numbers have been limited to 20 at each site. Mr Dewar says that, because the events are outdoors, everyone will be able to easily maintain physical distancing and good hygiene. The alliance hopes the events will also provide the community with a chance to reconnect. “Sustainable Neighbourhoods is all about connecting community and place,” Mr Dewar says. “These clean ups will be a fun opportunity to reconnect in a safe

cover story Mollyjane dons denim for worthy cause When Mollyjane* pulls on a pair of jeans tomorrow, it will be an act some doctors thought she would never be able to make. Affectionately known as ‘MJ’, she is set to don denim alongside her family and St Therese’s Primary School, New Lambton, in a bid to raise money for a cause close to her heart – Jeans for Genes Day – this Friday 7 August. MJ, a premature birth who was unwell from the beginning, suffered a cardiac arrest at just three days old, was put on life support, and sustained significant brain damage. “I’ll never forget the feeling of being told that she wasn’t coming home,’’ mum Jessica Rothwell said. “It’s a feeling that I don’t think any mother should hear. “So, we had her baptised, expecting her just to slip away.’’ However, after speaking to a

doctor in the United Kingdom, the family was able to receive the answers they needed. MJ was diagnosed with Carnitineacylcarnitine translocase (CACT) – a life-threatening genetic disease that currently has no cure. “They told us we had maybe six months,’’ Jessica said. “They told us: ‘Take her home and love her’, in those exact words, but then, once I got home, I knew we had to do more.’’ By the age of five, MJ had experienced five cardiac arrests and had over 400 days in hospital but, when she turned 10, the first thing her mum wanted to do was take her back to hospital. MJ wasn’t sick – Jessica simply wanted to show the doctors that her daughter had made it to double digits. Each year, Jeans for Genes Day

supports the Children’s Medical Research Institute and helps find cures for children’s genetic diseases. “If we could invest in gene therapy now, the next generation won’t ever have to go through this,” Jessica said. “We hope they can find a cure so MJ can live a long and happy life. “I just wish every parent living with a child with a genetic disease could go behind the scenes at the Children’s Medical Research Institute, as we have, to see there are people fighting for your children behind the scenes.” Jessica added the support from the Newcastle community has helped the family through tough times. “Without the support, we believe Mollyjane wouldn’t be alive,” she said.

Filmmakers bid to make the cut You can’t hum if you hold your nose. It might sound like “hocus pocus” but a group of Tighes Hill Public School students are hoping these words of wisdom make their film ‘Ghoul School’ the best in NSW. The budding filmmakers have

had their five-minute work chosen as a finalist in this year’s annual ‘Film By…Invitation’ film festival. They are one of just 18 NSW schools in the running to win the Bryan’s Pick Award, named after popular

Australian actor Bryan Brown. Production crew member and the film’s lead actor, Oscar Gronhaug, says the Halloween-themed production is “all just a joke”. “We wanted people to just have a laugh and learn something new,” he said. “The film is for kids, but maybe eight to 12-year-olds because they understand irony. “Everyone [in the film] is doing these amazing magic tricks, it’s incredible, but the most amazing thing turns out to be so silly. “It’s ironic.” Tighes Hill Public School teacher Kerrie Armstrong said the students’ work was impressive. “The brief was it had to contain a bunch of hocus-pocus and it had to feature a pumpkin,” she said. “I think they’ve produced something really clever.” ‘Ghoul School’ screened this week as part of NSW Education Week celebrations. A toast to ‘Read Between the Wines’ book club A bad breakup and isolation wasn’t the best combination for Rachelle Good-Neilsen. She found solace in reading a good book, and that’s when she realised she was on to something. “I needed a distraction and I thought: ‘With isolation and everything, I’m sure there’s people out there looking to socialise with other people with similar interests,’” she said. Rachelle took to community pages on Facebook to see if there was interest in starting a book club and was lucky enough to get some bites. The popularity of the club, now known as ‘Read Between the Wines,’ is proving a godsend for local authors and vignerons, who are being given the chance to feature each month. One of the authors is Todd Alexander, whose work Thirty thousand bottles of wine and a pig called Helga! was the book of choice in July. The book details Todd’s move from the corporate world to the

country after a life-changing holiday to the Barossa Valley. “We stayed in a real dive in the Barossa and it was really expensive and we thought we could do a better job than that, so we thought: ‘Let’s do accommodation,’” Todd said. Todd and his partner then looked for properties for three years before they came across Block Eight in Belford in the Hunter Valley. “We found this property which is 100 acres, has more than 12,000 grape vines and 1,000 olive trees and we thought: ‘We won’t worry about the crops, we will bulldoze those and open our accommodation and that’s what we will focus on.’ “Then the night we moved in, we tried a bottle of wine that Brokenwood had made from our grapes and it just blew our minds, and I distinctly remember I looked at my partner and I started shaking my head because I knew what was happening and he went: ‘Well, farming, how hard could that be?’ “So, we have been working our fingers to the bone for the past

seven years and we love it.” The dedication to crops then expanded to goats, sheep and a few pigs, who became unlikely family members. “I wanted to slaughter pigs and do my own small goods and show people you use the whole beast and not just the choice cuts,” Todd said. “So, I went off and got two pigs who both happened to be male and I named them on the way home and fell madly in love with them and there wasn’t a chance in hell I was going to be slaughtering those pigs.” Enter Helga – the pig who thinks she’s a dog. “She’s the most engaging farm animal you can ever imagine,” he said. “She would fall asleep on my chest, she would sit like a dog, fetch like a dog, and she kind of became the focus of the book.” You can read all about Helga’s adventures by joining the ‘Read Between the Wines’ book club on Facebook. - Emma Murphy 29

Some tips for wearing a mask: • When putting on a mask, you must wash or sanitise your hands before putting it on. • Make sure it covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly under your chin, over the bridge of your nose and against the sides of your face. • Do not touch it while it’s on and do not let it hang around your neck or under your nose. • When taking off a face mask, wash and sanitise your hands and handle the mask by the ear loops or ties. • Fold the outside corners together and, if reusable, store in a separate bag until you can take it home and wash it. • After taking the mask off, you should wash or sanitise your hands again.

Rise in demand for native plants Modern garden designs tend to focus on garden walls, cactus and succulent designs but, at this time of year, the requests for native plants become more prevalent as many are in flower at this time. Wattles are still blooming, and Geraldton Wax is close to flowering. My favourite natives are grevilleas, which have many advantages: they grow quickly, attract birds and their blooms are ideal as a cutting flower. The larger flowers are borne on Honey Gem, Misty Pink, Moonlight and Sandra Gordon, which can be cut with long stems that are ideal for tall vases. Tall growing eucalypts are rarely sought within suburban areas as their popularity has waned after hot summers and bushfires, although the smaller grafted flowering varieties are being planted. The only deterrent is the cost. Not a graft, Eucalyptus gunni is a small blue-leafed variety which is great for floral arrangements. The most popular native for today’s gardens is the Lily Pilly, which can be grown into a small tree, a hedge or even a topiary plant. They can be prone to pysillid attack and, now,

the little Calypso Beetle that cuts a serrated edge around the leaf, tricking gardeners as it looks a little like a ladybird. These couple of problems shouldn’t be a deterrent as they grow quickly and can be controlled. I love Syzygium Cascade. Popular because it doesn’t grow too tall, it bears beautiful pink pom pom-like flowers and pink edible berries. Growing in abundance in the bush is the Gymea Lily (Doryanthus excelsa). This popular native is a wonderful centrepiece with its tall erect red lily. If you want splashes of colourful red in the garden, it is hard to go past the NSW Christmas Bush (Ceratopetalum gummiferum), not to be confused with New Zealand Christmas Bush, which, in comparison, is easy to grow. Unfortunately, our NSW Christmas Bush can be a little difficult to grow. They like sandy soil, which is well drained with an occasional application of blood and bone. For some unknown reason, it sometimes takes the third planting to succeed. A small native tree to this area is

the Cupania or Tuckeroo – it is ideal for coastal planting, with glossy green foliage, flowers and bright yellow seed that the birds find extremely attractive.
