This week...

From the editor Like many of you, I’ve been very stressed of late as I try and juggle the whole worklife balance. The weekend provided some much-needed downtime, with a few hours spent in the kitchen using the slow cooker and throwing a zucchini slice in the oven.

It was also a chance to take a break with my partner and the kids to do simple things like watch Captain Underpants, play Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation, and go for a quick trip out to Morpeth. Apart from having a King Charles Cavalier called Blossom snoring in my ear all night and being woken up at 5am on Sunday, it was just what I needed and helped put almost everything else on hold.

It goes without saying that, during these challenging times, it’s healthy to stop, enjoy what is most important to us, and then go again. And, if you do need to speak to someone, please make sure that you reach out to either your family, friends, or valuable organisations like Lifeline (13 11 14).

news Rail trail project chugs along A rail trail that advocates believe will promote tourism, exercise and mental health is one step closer to reality.

Richmond Vale Rail Trail committee member Leigh Gibbens hopes a rise in cycling and walking during the COVID-19 shutdown period will continue once the Hunter Region recovers from the pandemic.

“People of the Hunter will need more safe cycling and walking infrastructure and, with limitations on overseas travel, state and federal governments are focusing on domestic tourism,” she says.

“Richmond Vale Rail Trail will be a great drawcard for tourists wishing to travel to the Lower Hunter area.”

The trail, a proposed 32-kilometre cycling and walking track, will sprawl along the former Richmond Vale rail line between Kurri Kurri

and Hexham; the former Chichester to Newcastle water pipeline between Shortland and Tarro; and through the Hunter Wetlands National Park.

It has been put forward by Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Cessnock councils, with support from the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Donaldson Conservation Trust, and the Mindaribba and Awabakal Local Aboriginal Land councils.

In April, the State Government announced Cessnock City Council would receive $75,000 towards the project, which helped fund a specialist role to move it forward.

The consultant will prepare a development application and other related documentation, including the finalisation of the Review of Environmental Factors (REF).

overseas have demonstrated their value in attracting the tourism dollar.

“The Richmond Vale Rail Trail will do the same,” she says.

Advocates point to the success of New Zealand’s first off-road cycleway and walking trail, the Otago Central Rail Trail, which fully opened in 2000, as an example.

Ms Gibbens says the Richmond Vale Rail Trail will showcase the

region’s rich biodiversity.

“The [trail] also has a rich heritage and will provide a range of cultural and environmental awareness opportunities, with over half the trail passing through national parks and regional conservation areas,” she says.

Men’s shed launches new appeal after reopening A new appeal is calling on the community to donate unused computers and sewing machines to struggling families and children in Asia.

If you have any of these items sitting at home, the Newcastle Men’s Shed needs your help.

In collaboration with Dubbo Men’s Shed, the group is collecting electronics and appliances, wiping them of data, and giving them any necessary repairs.

The donations will then be sent to the Philippines for children and families to use while their schools are shut down amid the pandemic.

“COVID has closed the schools and they need to work from home, as we had to,” Newcastle Men’s Shed Secretary, Wayne Grant, said.

“We’re looking for all types of

computers – we wipe them and set them up to be sent over there.”

However, donors need to be quick because the campaign may shut in a few months when the group needs to move premises again.

An ongoing issue for the organisation, it is on the hunt for a new home for the fifth time in as many years.

“It’s frustrating – we’ve moved four times in five years,” Mr Grant said.

“We’ve done as much as we can, and the community has been so supportive and helpful.

“When we look at other men’s sheds, and they have a permanent property, we get a bit envious, but we still look after our members.

“We need to be more patient, hopefully our luck changes soon.

“There has got to be light at the end of the tunnel.”

In other news for the group, men’s sheds across the state were given the green light to reopen last Saturday.

It came after Wallsend State MP Sonia Hornery contacted the NSW Health Minister, Brad Hazzard, about the easing of restrictions for community centres.

used to provide a service to assist vulnerable members of the public and for counselling and support group services,” Ms Hornery said.

“Men’s sheds play an important role in the ongoing health of men in our community.”

Surviving and thriving: How Kane beat leukemia twice At the tender age of just nineyears-old, Ashtonfield’s Kane Ransom is like any other boy his age.

He likes playing handball with his friends and loves Star Wars.

But there’s one big difference.

Kane has beaten cancer not

once, but twice.

When he was just three-yearsold, Kane was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

His mum, Natalie, pushed doctors to investigate when little Kane started complaining of sore legs, was lethargic, and suffered from fevers.

She was told he had four weeks to live without treatment.

After two years of treatment, Kane was officially in remission.

But, 18 months to that day, in 2017, there was devastating news.

“We had just moved into a new house and he dropped something and bent to pick it up and he was screaming in pain because of his back,” Natalie says.

“We thought it could have been because he had fallen off the monkey bars, so we went to have an X-ray and nothing came back from that and then this gut feeling hit – he hadn’t been right for a couple of weeks.

“We rang the oncologist to have a health check and he had relapsed.”

What followed was six months of intensive treatment, followed by another two years of chemotherapy.

“He didn’t want to go through it again,” Natalie says.

“As soon as he started to get treatment, the anxiety came back – what he had been through.

“I don’t know if you can put words to it.

“The hardest fact was that we couldn’t hug him to tell him everything was going to be alright because we didn’t know if he was going to be okay.”

The family was all tested to see if they were a match for a bone marrow transplant, but those plans were pushed aside when Kane responded well to treatment.

In May, Kane took his final dose of oral chemotherapy, and is now enjoying a ‘normal’ life.

As Kane puts it, life is now just “more fun”.

“He’s brilliant,” Natalie says.

“To look at him, you would not even know what he’s gone through.

“He’s a resilient, bubbly, energetic boy – you just wouldn’t even tell.

“We can see the emotional scars but no-one else looking in could see it.”

Kane’s back at school, although that did take a set-back when COVID-19 hit.

“He told me: ‘As much as I love you mum, I really want to go back to school,’” Natalie says.

He’s been enjoying crabbing and fishing, is training in mixed martial arts, and learning to play the keyboard in the school band.

But life for Kane is not without its challenges.

He’s behind on his school work, and has problems with his memory and making friends – a result of

spending much of his childhood so far surrounded by adults and doctors.

“He’s been struggling with friends because he has an adult sense of humor,” Natalie says.

“He was playing with Year 6 children when he was in Year 2, but, since he’s been in Year 3, things have levelled out and he has made good friends who are all a little bit quirky like him.”

The family is now planning to tick off its collective bucket list, with trips to Darwin, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Phillip Island.

“I still can’t relax, the fear of him relapsing is real, but I don’t show that to my kids,” Natalie says.

“Kane’s oncologist says there’s more chance of it [leukemia] staying away than coming back, but we’ve been there before.

“If it does come back, we’ve still got options.”

Cancer survivors have often described finishing treatment as “like falling off a cliff”.

However, Novocastrian Kristina Bircsak is on a mission to raise

funds for a centre that can catch you as you fall.

In 2016, she was diagnosed with bowel cancer and, after the fight of her life, she rediscovered karate

on the path to her emotional and physical recovery.

“I didn’t know who to talk to about what I should do or how this was going to work,” she said.

“So, I pretty much didn’t do anything at all, I stayed at home and started to get a bit depressed.

“I think towards the end I went into a state of shock and just sat there really down, and I ended up in hospital.

“I just sat there for days staring out the window, I felt like I couldn’t do anything [but] after a couple of days, I realised that I needed to do something, and I needed to get myself out of this depression.”

So, after she had her port removed – a small disc made of plastic or metal that sits just under the skin to administer chemotherapy – Kristina joined The Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre

to start her journey from having cancer to earning her blackbelt.

“I decided that I needed to do something for myself and I needed to get up and move it for my own mental health and for my family’s mental health as well, so I went back to karate,” she said.

She added that getting into martial arts put her back on track and helped her regain strength.

“Exercise is medicine, it really is, it does so much for our bodies,” she said.

It was through this journey that Kristina found The Kaden Centre, an organisation that provides customised exercise programs to cancer patients.

“The centre is so important, just for the feeling you get when you come and meet other people who are in the same situation,” she said.

through the same things and you can talk to them and then you can have a laugh and have a chat and have that support.

“That’s what I feel I sort of missed when I was going through my [cancer].”

To support the centre, she is raising money amid the journey to earn her blackbelt at the end of the year.

The Kaden Centre’s Managing Director, Suzanne Clark-Pitrolo, said she was very grateful for Kristina’s fundraising efforts.

“We are a charity so all of the fees that are charged here are very heavily subsidised, which means there is a need to raise funds to be able to subsidise it,” she said.

“The very first thing we notice is the improvement in [a patient’s] mental health.

“They’ve found a place that supports them, not with a needle or blood pressure test and all the rest of it but it’s that other

Kristina’s initial goal was to raise $1,000 for the centre, however, after already beating that target, she now wants to raise as much money as possible.

sport Adult community sport to play-on Getting adults back into their favourite sport is a win-win for everyone, according to Jamie Summers.

The Newcastle-based Lakers Basketball Club president and senior basketball social competition player believes the resumption of games has the potential for widespread benefits.

Summers’ comments come after the NSW Government announced on 10 June it was lifting more COVID-19 restrictions, which would allow adult community sport to recommence, together with 18 years and under, on Wednesday 1 July.

“This is great news, not just for basketball but for all sports,” Summers said.

“A lot of clubs were on the brink of going broke.

“Having juniors is great for a club but it doesn’t make money.

“The money is made out of the adults.”

Finances aside, Summers believes returning to activity was necessary for adults.

“It’s really important for mental health as well as physical health,” he said.

“I’m sure there are some people keen to just get out of the house and have a break from the family

they’ve been cooped up with for months.”

Returning to his favourite sport will, however, come with a new set of challenges.

“Numbers in the stadium must be kept under 100, everyone must have left before the next game can start, there’ll be a separate entry and exit, an extra 15 minutes between games, hand sanitiser will be available, and the ball must be cleaned after every game,” Summers said.

“At this stage there’ll be no spectators at adult competitions either,” he said.

Under the new restrictions, food and drink premises in stadiums will be able to open.

They will need to follow the same requirements that apply in other food and drink premises and pubs and registered clubs.

Stadium operators will be required to develop and comply with a COVID-19 Safety Plan, operate with restricted numbers and keep contact details of each person entering the premises.

NSW Acting Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee, thanked the community for its patience during the pause on local sports.

“We have reduced the spread of COVID-19 to

“It is only because communities have followed the strict social distancing guidelines that this announcement is possible.”

Australia’s Got Talent runner-up to reconnect with hometown audience For Greg Gould, performing at Lizotte’s this week is a chance to reconnect with a crowd he has missed since the introduction of restrictions.

On Friday, Gould, with the help of

fellow performer and friend Melanie Lewin, and musicians Michael Tan and Fletcher Pillon, will take to the Lizotte’s stage with his number one album, 1998.

The ’90s duets album features

unique covers of songs from the year 1998, with both national and international artists joining Gould behind the mic.

The 2013 Australia’s Got Talent runner-up had plans to release the album in 2018 but, when his stepmum was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer with three months to live, he took a break from recording.

About six months later, it was this loss that prompted Gould to finish the album for a charity close this his heart, the Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness Centre.

“It’s brought out parts of me that I didn’t know were there,” he said.

The Novocastrian told Newcastle Weekly his upcoming performance at Lizotte’s was a long time coming.

“It’s going to be nice to be able to connect with an actual audience,” he said.

“I’ve done so many shows at Lizotte’s, but this is actually my first time back in Newcastle after about three or four years.”

Gould said music and the arts

had been one of the hardest hit industries during the pandemic.

“The first day that restrictions came in, $10,000 was out of my pocket and I just had to say goodbye,” he said.

“I am fortunate enough that I work, I teach children with disability music, so I have a day job, but a lot of artists are unemployed.”

He said it was important to back those in the industry.

“Share their music and livestreams and, as soon as venues open, get tickets if you can,” he said.

“I know it is a hard time for people but, if you are able to financially support someone in that way, please go out and see the shows.”

Zanzibar Gem stands tall indoors I abandoned the garden on my day off.

Although the sun was out, I felt like relaxing after working all weekend but, as I sat with my book, my eyes couldn’t resist checking out my house plants and feeling quite proud of my latest group.

Using the same pot and similar foliage, I featured in the centre a Zanzibar Gem for height, a Madonna Lily in flower, and a variegated aglaonema with white stripes.

They are all hardy indoor plants, but the Zanzibar Gem takes the prize. It hardly needs watering.

Madonna Lilies, sometimes called Peace Lilies, love a drink, but they will let you know when they begin to droop.

By now you have probably realised I only take home the toughies – selecting plants for inside at this time of year needs to be done carefully.

Ferns, need daily attention and regular watering and a cool spot such as the bathroom where they aren’t going to be dried out.

I personally don’t tend to fi ll my home with large plants, perhaps because I have too much furniture collected over the years.

Currently, large indoor plants are extremely popular. Tall Kentia Palms and Happy plants, both of which are hardy and sought after.

Now that winter is approaching, Ficus lyrata (Fiddleleaf Figs) can be a little hard to fi nd as growers fi nd they don’t like the cold.

Burgandy and variegated rubber trees handle the cold well, as do Strelitzia Nicolai, which need space to grow tall.

Gardening inside is often experimental – check out the light situation at this time of the year as the sun is lower.

I often fi nd I have enquiries now when I am shown leaves with burn marks, mostly when I check the plant is against a window.
