Communities thrive on the back of volunteers’ hard work. We love to focus on, and pay tribute to, the thousands of committed souls across the Hunter Region, who dedicate their time to help others. Amid National Volunteer Week (18 to 24 May), we’ve shared the story of Chrissy McGuiness – a nurse who joined Camp Quality 14 years ago and went on to become a medical volunteer, where she attends camps and helps children with things like first aid. Chrissy has been rewarded for her efforts by being named as the regional winner of the Camp Quality Gillard Volunteer of the Year Award. You’ll find more on that story on page 21. This week’s cover features Fatality Free Friday, which is coming up on 29 May. Newcastle Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Senior Sergeant Michael Buko believes that “no-one likes us, we’re the bringers of bad news”. However, he hopes the Fatality Free Friday campaign can send a reminder to drivers that, every time they get behind the wheel, they control a vehicle that can kill someone. news Directory to support community through crisis

People experiencing homelessness across the Hunter now have a new resource to turn to for help. Not-for-profit organisation Hunter Homeless

Connect is distributing a printed directory which contains details of support services around the region. Hunter Homeless Connect Coordinator, Nissa Lee Phillips, says the resource will help those in crisis. “It’s a directory of local information to connect people to crisis support services with COVIDspecific updates,” she says. “It will direct them to local services that can help deal with their needs, things like food relief and domestic or family violence support services.” People can use the directory to find services that provide emergency relief, healthcare, housing, food, domestic violence support, refugee services, and more. There are also specific sections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as people living with disability and youth. The service normally distributes the guide at its annual Hunter Homeless Connect Day, but the event has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Event Coordinator Michelle Faithfull says it is

still uncertain if the event will go ahead, so they are prioritising supporting the community. “An increased number of people in our community have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 restrictions and many are now at risk of homelessness,” she says. “They face hardship and have no idea where to find support. “They will also bear the impact of local support services being affected by social distancing restrictions.” Orica has funded the initial printing of 2,000 copies of the directory and a PDF version is also available on the Hunter Homeless Connect website. The guide will be distributed across the Hunter and the group hopes the community will help spread the word. news Wetlands devastated by deliberately lit fire

A tractor destroyed by the fire at the Hunter Wetlands Centre in Shortland.

A deliberately lit fire has destroyed valuable equipment at a popular wildlife sanctuary in Newcastle. Staff at the Hunter Wetlands Centre were alerted to the blaze by a motion detection camera just after 6pm on Monday 11 May. Fire and Rescue NSW crews

managed to extinguish it a few hours later, but the fire destroyed a large amount of equipment, including a tractor, truck, ute, ride on mowers, chainsaws, whipper snippers, a boat, and various other gardening tools. More than 250 wildlife species

have been discovered at the wetlands, including birds, ducks, tortoises and frogs. None of the inhabitants were injured. Police are still investigating the incident as the camera detected a group of people at the Shortland site. Hunter Wetlands Centre Chief Executive, Ken Bayliss, said the organisation had been left devastated by the event. “How any person could have deliberately done that, I will never understand,” he said. Mr Bayliss added the centre might struggle to maintain the grounds without the vital resources. “The loss almost stops us from providing the sort of facility that we’ve provided in years gone by,” he said. “We are a community-owned, not-for-profit charity and to lose all

that equipment makes it really hard to do what we’ve always done.” The site was set to reopen on Monday after the coronavirus pandemic forced the centre to close its doors to visitors and forgo its main source of income. However, after this devastating blow, it is unsure of when it will be able to reopen. If you would like to help the Hunter Wetlands Centre during this time, make a donation online. Becoming a member will also help the service – a cost of just $15 allows you to visit the wetlands as much as you like. news Tender called for Bathers Way project Newcastle’s Bathers Way Coastal Pathway will soon have another section transformed as contracts to build the latest stretch opened to tender this week. Site preparation work and cliff stabilisation will begin shortly before separate contracts are awarded in July for the latest instalment of the Bathers Way’s signature broadened pathway and an adjoining skate park and bowl. The $11.7 million project, which will start in August and take around two years to complete, will reactivate South Newcastle Beach with a kiosk, new public amenities, landscaping, artwork, shade and seating, exercise equipment and viewing areas. Bathers Way Community Reference Group representative John Bogaerts believes the transformation will help breathe life back into the area. “The area has been dormant for some time so this upgrade will mean it meets the community’s needs and will complement the rest of the existing Bathers Way,” he said. As part of the Newcastle Beach Community

Infrastructure Project, the upcoming works will better connect King Edward Park and Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club before the final Bathers Way sections, through the park and along Memorial Drive, are delivered. “Construction companies are now invited to bid for these two contracts to transform a longdormant part of Newcastle’s coastline,” City of Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, says. “By renewing the site’s infrastructure and building new facilities, we hope to revive South Newcastle Beach as a vibrant and attractive place to visit. “Completed sections of the Bathers Way have prompted 50% usage increases, with Merewether one of the busiest due to its additional facilities, and we expect to see similar impetus from this revitalisation project.” Cr Nelmes adds that increased foot traffic in the area will also benefit the community as it will create more surveillance and help to reduce antisocial behaviour. The project is partially funded through the State Government’s Restart NSW Fund and has

been guided by the Bathers Way Community Reference Group. Community feedback in 2018 on the original concept plan, which had a skate bowl extending onto the beach, prompted modifications that garnered overwhelming support in further community engagement last year. In preparation, minor construction work will commence in June, including drainage, maintenance of the cliff face and preparations to extend the existing rock-catch fence. cover story Campaign aims to put brakes on road fatalities Motorists across the Hunter Region are being urged to “switch on” and do the right thing ahead of this year’s Fatality Free Friday. It is estimated that around 1,200 people lose their lives on Australia’s roads every year. Newcastle Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Senior Sergeant Michael Buko says the pandemic is creating lighter traffic on the roads. However, he adds officers around the city are “catching more people speeding than ever”. “Pay attention to what you are doing and slow down,” he says. “I think a problem in society at the moment is that everyone is rushing from A to B all the time and people aren’t planning in advance. “Wake up an extra five minutes early to get to work, give yourself

time, don’t rush, pay attention, and don’t touch your phone.” He wants people to remember that, every time they get behind the wheel, they control a vehicle that can kill someone if they are doing the wrong thing. Since its inception in 2007, the Fatality Free Friday campaign has helped the Australian community take ownership of complex road safety issues and encouraged drivers to make smart choices on the road. “Days like [Fatality Free Friday] highlight to people that there are people dying on our roads,” Sergeant Buko says. “It’s not just a police problem, it’s a community problem and we need to make an effort as a community to make a difference.” Set to fall on Friday 29 May, the

Australian Road Safety Foundation hopes the initiative will lead to a fatality free day. Sergeant Buko says a day like that will give his staff a much-needed break and believes there is a big misconception around highway patrol officers. “No one likes us, we’re the bringers of bad news but we’re all mums and dads and brothers and

sisters, we all live in the community,” he says. “I’d love my guys to come back and say: ‘I didn’t book anyone today, no one did anything wrong’. “But, unfortunately, we go to accidents, we hold people’s hands when they die, and we see things that people should never see, and we have to see it time and time again.” - Elizabeth Symington

The NRL has released the draw for the first two rounds of the season’s resumption, with Newcastle set to face sides who are also yet to lose a game this year. The Knights will tackle sixthplaced Penrith away on Sunday 31 May, before travelling to the nation’s capital to take on Canberra, in third, on Sunday 7

June. Both games are due to kick off at 4.05pm. The remaining fixtures have yet to be confirmed. Newcastle started the season in blistering form, with a 20-0 win over New Zealand followed by a 42-24 thumping of Wests Tigers. The two big wins left the Knights in second spot, behind Parramatta, when play was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. Aside from Newcastle, the first clash in round three will see the Eels travel to Brisbane to play the Broncos on Thursday 28 May from 7.50pm, with North Queensland to face the Gold Coast on Friday 29 May from 6pm. sport Supercars cancellation leaves local talent “gutted” Homegrown driver Cody McKay is “gutted” by the cancellation of this year’s Newcastle 500. Supercars Australia announced on the weekend it had dropped the event due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. “We’re pretty disappointed, it’s our biggest event,” McKay says. “We feel pretty gutted we can’t race on our hometown track in front of our family, friends and fans.” The event, which was set to return to Newcastle in December, promised three days of actionpacked excitement. McKay adds that, while it is a big hit to the sport, he understands the decision. “The whole of sport in general has been affected but it will eventually be back,” he says.

“We know it’s going to return next year, and we are busting to get back out there. “We don’t know where, we don’t know when, but we’re holding out for the return – we’ve been cooped up inside way too long.” City of Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, believes the cancellation is a devastating loss for the city. “The Newcastle 500 is the largest event on the local calendar,” she says.

She adds the Hunter Research Foundation discovered the event generates more than $30 million annually for the Newcastle economy.

“The loss of this event in December 2020 and the tens of thousands of overnight bookings is devastating for accommodation and hospitality providers, who are already under financial pressure from measures required to stop the spread of COVID-19.”

“As the finale of the Supercars Australia Championship series, the Newcastle 500 brings widespread exposure for our city,” she says. “The 2019 event recorded 344 media stories from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 November, reaching a combined domestic audience

of more than 14 million people, with an estimated value of over $2 million. “According to Supercars Australia, the TV audience for Newcastle 500 peaked at more than 1.8 million viewers with an average of 1.3 million people viewing the three-day event. “We look forward to the return of Supercars to Newcastle.” - Elizabeth Symington

Dobell House marks 50 years The late Sir William Dobell was one of Newcastle’s most renowned artists, but it’s not just his prize-winning masterpieces through which his legacy lives on. Dobell House, his former residence in Wangi Wangi, is preciously preserved by volunteer organisation the Friends of Dobell, and this year marks five decades since it rallied to save the house. “The house and assets were to be sold, but [prominent local] Betty Linton said: ‘We can’t let it go,’ so she rallied locals and raised enough money to buy the property,” Friends of Dobell Vice-President Sharon Pearl told Newcastle Weekly. The original 1920s home still holds a lot of the three-time Archibald Prize-winning artist’s original furniture, pallets, easels and even his baby grand piano. “It was his last residence and studio and it’s historical in the art world to have that,” Sharon said. “We get people from across the globe visit, from Europe, America and all over Australia.

“People find the energy in the house unique; they go upstairs to the studio and say they can feel him up there.” Thirty volunteers currently keep the house open to the public, however, with many over 80-years-old, the organisation is looking for younger recruits. “We really want to keep the place going, but a lot of us are retirees, we have grandchildren and are busy with life,” Sharon said. “Our oldest volunteer is 94, so younger volunteers, particularly those interested in history and art are very much welcome.” Any new volunteers would be required to attend Dobell House once a month and be invited to participate in an art class every Tuesday morning. Dobell House is open to visitors between the hours of 1pm and 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, or by appointment. Volunteer recognised for extraordinary effort For Chrissy McGuiness, volunteering with Camp Quality is like being a kid again. The nurse always knew she wanted to do something with children, so, 14 years ago, she leapt into action with Camp Quality. “I started because I wanted to find some company for myself and I knew I wanted to do something with kids,” she said. “When I first started, I was a companion, where you stay with one child for the entire day. “My first companion was a little boy called Thomas who was four years old.

Newcastle Fringe receives grant Newcastle Fringe has received a grant from the Australia Council Resilience Fund, ensuring the festival’s financial viability next year. The Fringe promised a smorgasbord of performing arts from across Newcastle and the world over five amazing days from 18 to 22 March. However, event organisers were forced to cancel the festival due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many of the artists from this year’s event chose to take credits on their entry fees so that they could return in 2021. Newcastle Fringe Director, Phil Aughey, said he was grateful to receive the grant. “We wish to thank our sponsors, Port Waratah Coal Services, AGL, and now the Australia Council for the Arts for their belief in, and support of, the Newcastle Fringe Festival,” he said. “Next year’s festival will be a wonderful celebration of all things fringe and we can’t wait to bring it to the people of Newcastle.” The sixth edition of Newcastle Fringe is set to take place from 17 to 21 March 2021.

“We got on a flight and went to Queensland with the group and did three theme parks in five days.” Chrissy now works as a medical volunteer, where she attends camps and helps children with things like first aid. She said her favourite memories are when she gets to see “kids just being kids”. “They’ve all been through something terrible but are now experiencing some fun, which is a great thing to see.” During National Volunteer Week, which goes from Monday 18 to Sunday 24 May, Chrissy will be recognised for her dedication to helping young people with cancer. As the regional winner of the Camp Quality Gillard Volunteer of the Year Award, she encourages everyone to get involved in volunteering. “It’s fun and amazing to give back – it’s like we are all kids again,” she said.

National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of Australia’s volunteers. At a time when it is more important than ever to remember the positives, this year’s theme is ‘Changing Communities. Changing Lives’. To celebrate the occasion while adhering to the COVID-19 restrictions, Volunteering Australia invites you to put your hand up and thank all volunteers with a wave of appreciation. Best vegetables to plant for winter With the resurgence of planting vegetables and herbs, customers were looking for sweet basil and tomatoes – sadly not available for winter planting – last weekend. Many have planted out winter vegetables in the brassica family such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. Winter vegetables like an alkaline soil. Hopefully, garden beds were prepared with poultry manure one week before planting – if not, it isn’t too late to add lime to the soil. Winter is a great time to grow celery as it needs plenty of moisture and has fairly shallow roots. If the weather is dry, add a moisture-retentive humus to the soil, fertilising for tender, succulent stalks. Beets, such as beetroot and silverbeet, can be harvested almost all year round – during winter, the most popular vegetable to grow is

silverbeet, not to be confused with English spinach. It is easy to grow. Water well to encourage steady growth, applying a foliant fertiliser, such as Flourish, regularly. Vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage can be slow to mature, sometimes taking up to 12 weeks. Cauliflower isn’t easy to grow to perfection as the flower buds can be bruised and damaged – once the head is produced it is wise to fold the leaves over to protect the cauliflower centre. There are many cabbages available; Sugarloaf is possibly the most popular. Broccoli is an excellent cool season vegetable, although it is a close relative of cauliflower. The tightly packed heads are green. When the large centre head reaches 20cm, this can be cut, allowing new shoots to form with smaller heads in the leaf axils, allowing the plant to produce for

many weeks. One of my favourite winter vegetables is Brussels sprouts, which needs more space to grow than broccoli – apply a dressing of nitrogen fertiliser or liquid feed regularly. The greatest problem with the above vegetables is the white moth, which lays eggs that hatch and eat the plants. Dust regularly with cabbage dust or derris dust. Probably the easiest vegetable to grow year-round are carrots. Baby carrots can be ready for harvest in 10 to 12 weeks. Often sought after at this time of year are beans – the only ones to grow now though are broad beans. This is also the season to grow peas; sugar snaps and snow peas are available to plant now. Many vegetables can be grown in containers, but I would suggest root crops such as carrots are more productive in a garden bed.
