This week... From the editor It’s great to be back. This is our first edition since 2 April, and we have missed being able to produce a weekly magazine for you. When the infamous COVID-19 hit hard, we, like many businesses, set ourselves up to work from home and spent the past five weeks building up a new-look website (www.newcastleweekly.com.au) to complement the print publication. During my time at home, I managed to find a balance of work and exercise – it could’ve gone either way given how much I like to eat – and settled into a good routine. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many people out exercising, and you’ll no doubt see even more this month as participants raise muchneeded funds for multiple sclerosis (MS). The May 50K, a virtual fitness challenge that is highly interactive, has already raised more than $3 million for research to support the 25,600 Australians who have been diagnosed with MS. This week’s cover star, Kate Roberts, is one of them. The highest fundraiser in the inaugural event last year, Kate will again raise funds by walking around her local park with her trusty sidekick, Nitro. - Ben Murphy

news State-of-the-art headquarters for busy marine rescue unit Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie will soon have new state-of-the-art headquarters. Construction has started on the $1.7 million communications centre, which will provide the service with a world-class emergency operations base for its work to save lives on the water. Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie Unit Commander Mal Wardrop said the new facility would improve its operations and increase its capacity to train volunteers. “Our current base has served us well, but it was not built to cater to the modern, professional emergency response and management needs of our members,” he said. “This new centre will enhance our operations and provide our members with a safe, secure

working environment. “We are confident that firstrate facilities such as this will also encourage new members to join the unit. “At the moment we can only train one person at a time but, with the new facility, we will be able to train more people.” The landmark base is set to replace the unit’s existing facility on Swansea Heads and will be equipped with the latest generation marine communications technology. It has been purpose-designed to provide dedicated command and control facilities for planning, managing and coordinating extended and multi-agency search and rescue operations. The two-storey building will also incorporate training and meeting

As the busiest marine rescue unit in NSW, Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said the facility was an important investment in the safety of the region’s large boating community. “This new facility has been called for by Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie for some years,” he said.

“Our volunteers, there are about 150 of them, work in less than ideal space. “The old headquarters on Swansea Head were built [about] 40 years ago and it’s just not suitable for the demand of the service.” The new base was designed by TorrenBell Building Design. It will be built by Cowyn Building Group. Weather permitting, the building is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. - Elizabeth Symington

cover story Giant strides in effort to end MS Kate Roberts has a new lease of life. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) following her 30th birthday, the Hunter resident endured years of difficult treatment until she finally started to turn a corner. “That’s when I saw an advertisement for The May 50K,” Kate says. A virtual fitness and fundraising challenge that is highly interactive, The May 50K can be completed on your own anywhere in Australia, with minimal risk to others – even in the comfort of your own home, backyard, or local park. Kate was the highest fundraiser in the inaugural event in 2019, amassing more than $21,000. “Being able to walk just over 150 kilometres in the month of May last year was really awesome,” she says. “The great thing about The May 50K is that it suits everybody – you can walk it, run it, roll it, do it with your fur baby or family, or make a community thing out of it, if the restrictions are taken off a bit by the end of May.” Funds raised from the event will aid life-

changing medical research to support the 25,600 Australians living with multiple sclerosis. The condition is the result of damage to the myelin – a protective sheath surrounding nerve fibres of the central nervous system. When myelin is damaged, this interferes with messages between the brain and other parts of the body. Kate’s symptoms first started when she was on the trip of a lifetime in 2013. “I woke up and couldn’t feel the right-hand side of my face,” she says. “It was the last week of my holidays when I was in Hawaii and I continued holidaying, but the sensation then travelled down the right side of my body.” After numerous relapses, Kate is now on a more aggressive form of treatment, which has made a real difference. She will now complete The May 50K by walking around her local oval with her trusty sidekick, Nitro. This year’s nationwide campaign has already raised more than $3 million towards better

Hunter bids farewell to a sporting legend

Newcastle sporting great, Ray Frost, pictured in 1955 and more recently, passed away on Saturday.

One of the Hunter Region’s greatest sporting personalities passed away on Saturday at the age of 94. Ray Frost was a life member of The Waratahs Rugby Union Club, WaratahMayfield District Cricket Club, and the former Waratah Bowling Club. He started his rugby career as a prop forward but later played as lock and breakaway because of his 79-kilogram frame. Frost played on numerous occasions for Newcastle against teams such as the New Zealand All Blacks, Fiji, Australian Barbarians and Queensland. 12

He also played hooker for The Rest against Australia in a trial match for the Wallabies’ South African tour. Frost is considered to be one of the unluckiest players after losing his chance to represent Australia to club mate, Cyril Burke, who was named as half back in the Wallabies squad. However, he played strongly for Newcastle and NSW Country in 1954, appearing in all 11 of Country’s matches during a tour of New Zealand. His performances resulted in his selection for NSW in 1955, along with teammates Ron Harvey and Terry Riley (reserve), to beat Queensland 49-6 at North Sydney Oval. Frost retired from football in 1958 but was named as lock in The Waratahs ‘Team of the Decade 1946-55’. His description on the team sheet stated: ‘Tough no-nonsense forward. Excellent cover defender. Could cover virtually any position on the field. Read the game well’. President of The Waratahs Rugby Union Club, Alex Robson, said Frost was a great clubman and a true gentleman. Robson added that Frost was one of the

original members of The Waratahs’ First Grade premiership winning team in 1946 when they won the Grand Final 6-3 against Merewether Carlton. He then became the club’s Secretary in 1949 and a club selector in the late 1950s before taking up coaching for the club in the early 1960s. Frost played 243 matches (160 in First Grade) for The Waratahs, won five First Grade premierships and, in 1955, became one of five original life members of the club – an honour he held for 65 years. Frost was also a talented cricketer and lawn bowler. He was inducted in 1968 as a life member of the Waratah-Mayfield District Cricket Club, having played for the club between 1950 and 1970. He was also a life member of the former Waratah Bowling Club, where the main green was named in his honour after years of dedicated play and work. A small family funeral will be held for Frost because of the COVID-19 restrictions, with a memorial service being planned for a date in the future.

Free workshops for families A new digital program is set to entertain families while they spend more time at home during the coronavirus pandemic. Lake Macquarie City Council’s You’re Kidding Me program will now feature a series of free workshops and activities online. The digital move is a response to the COVID-19 crisis, and a way for parents to access information in a

time when it is needed more than ever. Kicking off on Tuesday 12 May to coincide with National Families Week, this year’s You’re Kidding Me will include five workshops aimed at both parents and their children. Each workshop will cover a different topic, including cooking and healthy eating, children’s emotions during the current

pandemic, music, and STEM learning. The council’s Community Planner, Jess Salvador, said it was important to create a program that focused on supporting families and creating stronger communities. “The current situation has seen more parents at home with their kids,” she said. “We’ve designed our workshops to be informative as well as enjoyable. “There’s a mix of sessions where parents can learn new skills, as well as interactive activities where kids can get involved too.” The first session will be led by nutritionist Mandy Dos Santos of Little People Nutrition, who will guide families through a tutorial on how to cook an easy and healthy lunch. You’re Kidding Me workshops are free, but each session has a maximum attendance, so bookings are essential. All sessions will be run via Zoom.

Businesses bid to blossom this Mother’s Day Consumers are being urged to rally around local businesses this Mother’s Day as they bid to blossom after a turbulent period. One Lower Hunter business owner has already received much-needed support during the coronavirus crisis.

The disastrous impact of COVID-19 initially forced Morpeth Flower Gallery owner Suzanne Chapman to close her doors. However, after all major orders were cancelled, including weddings and corporate events, she was pushed to adapt to the

changing situation. “It forced me to evaluate my business and put in different boundaries,” she says. “I had zero money in the bank, I was faced with one bouquet going into the next week, and I was left owing a lot of money to the growers.” Since reopening her business a few weeks ago, Suzanne has been inundated with orders. “I’ve never been busier,” she says. “The locals are just amazing; I suppose it’s because people can’t go and see their relatives, so they are phoning up and delivering beautiful bouquets to their

limits in place. “I want to deliver a beautiful quality bouquet to everyone, so I’ve put limits on orders telling people they have to pre-order to ensure I have time to put them together,” she says. Suzanne says the most popular flower for Mother’s Day, which will fall on Sunday 10 May, is the chrysanthemum but, in her shop, people are loving native flowers, like proteas and banksias. Mother’s Day need not be a commercial venture I fi nd it amazing that Easter and Anzac Day have passed, and this Sunday is Mother’s Day already. We won’t be going out to eat, but at least restrictions will allow mums a visit, which will be much appreciated this year. I had a phone call from my eldest son earlier this week asking what I would like to do – that was unusual because every Mother’s Day I work at the nursery. Maybe the lockdown has many positives. Mother’s Day need not be a commercial venture – saying “I love you” is really all us mums need. Certainly, I won’t be suggesting a bunch of Chrysanthemums – chrissies – or a potted plant for

me, but I will be leaving lockdown as the nursery is always pleasant watching the tots come in with their dads, making the difficult decision about colour: trust me, it’s generally their favourite – forget what mum loves. Over the last few years, the very popular Mother’s Day present, the chrissie, has dropped in popularity, but it is traditional, especially for grandmas. Sure, modern mums love cyclamen, which are a good choice since these plants tolerate the cold. I gift myself one each year as they provide great colour inside for winter, although, to prolong their lifespan, a little care should

be taken. Water under the leaves not on the crown and pop them out at night in a sheltered spot occasionally, especially if they are in a heated room, which is often the case in winter. This season, I’ve noticed African Violets and Begonia Elateors are looking superb, possibly because of the cooler weather. They both provide an economical, colourful gift – the begonias requiring little care as they hold moisture in their stems. Hence do not overwater. Violets can have a reputation for being difficult. Simply fi nd a morning sun position, water from below, use a designated fertiliser, and they will be most rewarding.
