This week...

I’ve been on guard as soon as night falls. For the best part of three weeks, I have decided it is necessary to plonk myself in front of the television armed with a can of insect repellent, spraying and swatting the giant and aggressive mosquitoes as they storm through any door that is opened for a mere millisecond. My experience is not uncommon and, while my housemate seems to think I’m being a bit dramatic, many repellent suppliers are struggling to keep up with customer demand. We’ve got some tips from a Hunter New England Health physician on the ongoing, but not unprecedented, onslaught, as well as a warning of the potential dangers to your four-legged friends, on pages 8 and 9. Meanwhile, our cover star this week, Novocastrian Hannah Indigo, is one of many talented performers who will be on show during the fifth edition of the Newcastle Fringe Festival. The festival, which goes from 18 to 22 March, aims to cater for all interests and will include comedy, theatre, children’s theatre, music, dance, cabaret and circus. news New life saving program launches in Newcastle A new disability first aid course could be the difference between life and death. The course uses basic first aid principles and adapts them to situations an individual living with disability may face so carers can be equipped to respond. Disability First Aid Director Joel Robinson said he created the course because of the amount of queries he received. “I kept getting questions about helping someone who has a disability and how those first aid principles apply, and I didn’t actually have the answers for them,” he said. The former paramedic added that in regular courses participants are not taught how to adapt first aid skills to situations where the patient has mobility or cognitive issues.

“When we teach normal first aid, we show people how to assist someone who is choking and the assumption is that they are standing up; they’ve jumped up from a dining table and are choking on a bit of food,” he said. “What [Disability First Aid] does is go ‘alright we’re going to take these principles and adapt them to someone who is in a wheelchair and can’t get up’.” He said learning these skills was vital, particularly for disability carers, because there was only a small window to save a person’s life.

news More police hit the streets Six police officers are set to make Newcastle and the Hunter Region safer. The Northern High-Visibility Police (HVP) Unit, deployed last month, aims to prevent, disrupt and respond to crime by undertaking high-visibility patrols of crime hotspots. Northern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell APM, said the highvisibility teams would provide a reassuring presence on Hunter and Central Coast streets. He added that the new unit would play a key role in disrupting crime and anti-social behaviour and deal with a wide variety of criminal and social disorder offences. “High-visibility policing is a crucial element of regional policing – we want our communities to know we are there in numbers to protect

and support them 24/7,” Assistant Commissioner Mitchell said. “Local policing is at the heart of any regional community, and the HVP Unit is designed to increase overall confidence for all members of the community by addressing any concerns from retail owners, to visitors, to residents and workers. “The Northern HVP Unit will have the ability to be deployed wherever our demand and need is.” The team will collaborate with district police in terms of preventing and responding to crime. “People want to feel safe and secure and this is what this team’s primary focus is about,” Assistant Commissioner Mitchell said. The unit will be rolled out at events and areas where there are large crowds and will work towards increasing community engagement. “They are highly-skilled and

available to engage with the public – we want you to come up and talk to them, tell them what is happening in your neighbourhood,” he added. “By targeting crime with more boots on the ground and in a highlyvisible manner, it’s hoped offenders will have second thoughts before breaking the law.” It was announced last January that 100 new officers were set to be a part of the HVP teams, which would be stationed at five regions

news Mosquito mayhem leaves region itching, prompts warning over threat to pets While recent rains were a blessing for droughtravaged farmers, for city-dwellers it has meant an onslaught of backyard mosquitoes. The unwanted creatures are now humming across the Hunter Region in vast numbers, with many repellent suppliers struggling to keep up with customer demand. Despite the lack of any confirmed increase in numbers, Hunter New England Public Health physician Dr Tony Merritt said the sheer volume of the pesky parasite was not unprecedented. “From time to time we have these perfect conditions for them and it’s no surprise they’re breeding in high numbers at the moment,” he said. “The larvae were ready to go and the water from recent rains, high tides and now warm temperatures have made it perfect conditions for them all along the east coast.” During the warmer months, mosquitos may only take a week to develop from egg to adult.

Adult mosquitoes generally only live for up to three weeks but during this time the female requires blood from an animal or human to assist the development of her eggs. It is only the female mosquito that bites. Dr Merritt said, although it was tiresome protecting against bites, relief may be imminent. “It will settle,” he said. He added that repellent, clothing and avoiding sunrise and sunset was the most effective means of protection. “I can’t speculate on what it is they prefer but I think if you’re covered up and sprayed with repellent and the person next to you isn’t then they will tend to get bitten more,” he said. “Physically cover up, don’t go out at peak times such as dawn and dusk, which are the worst biting times, and reapply if you’re out for long periods of time.” Dr Merritt said, while mosquitoes could travel several kilometres, protecting your home

was the first line of defence. “Mosquitoes need standing water to complete their life cycle,” he said. “Prevent them coming inside your home by making sure doors and screens are in good condition and check your garden’s not providing areas where water can pool,

As we’ve swatted and sprayed the pesky mites to pause their hum, Fletcher Veterinary nurse Nikki Watson said we’ve ignored our vulnerable pals. Ms Watson is now warning Novocastrians of how lifethreatening mosquitos can be. “During these warmer, humid months between February and April, we see an emergence of mosquitoes and, with that, mosquito-transmitted diseases to our pets,” she said. Heartworm and myxomatosis are two diseases that can be transmitted to pets. “Both of these are deadly to pets,” Ms Watson said. Mosquitoes have been directly

responsible for more than 490 cases of heartworm in dogs in Australia since 2014. “The larvae of the worm is carried by a mosquito from an infected dog to another dog, where the parasite lodges into the arteries of the new host’s heart and grows to large lengths,” Ms Watson said. “This eventually becomes fatal to the dog.” She added that dogs were not the only pets at risk. “Between February and March last year, we had to euthanise a large number of pet rabbits due to [myxomatosis] and we see this pattern arise each year,” she said. “There is no vaccination to protect pet rabbits against the virus, however, we urge our clients to protect their pets by keeping them in mozzie-proof hutches and keeping them inside during the high-mosquito times of dusk and dawn.” - Rebecca Riddle

Hunter Surf Life Saving clubs are set to farewell a major sponsor this year. By the end of 2020, the Holden and Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) partnership will end following General Motors’ retirement of the Holden brand in both Australia and New Zealand. Hunter Surf Lifesaving Chief Executive Rhonda Scruton said the loss was a major blow for the region. “[It’s] really disappointing to lose any major

sponsorship – this sponsorship allowed Hunter Branch duty officers to have a fully fitted out emergency vehicle to attend at all 13 clubs when needed in rescues,” she said. “As a not-for-profit organisation, we are totally reliant on sponsorships to supply big-ticket vital rescue equipment, including emergency vehicles, IRBs [Inflatable Rescue Boats] and ATVs [AllTerrain Vehicles].” Ms Scruton said the withdrawal of funding was most disheartening because of the services these clubs provided to the community and their members. “We are the unsung heroes that protect beaches from September to April every year,” she said. “We train, we educate, [and] we develop youth [and have done] this quietly for the past 112 years, all for free.” The Hunter Branch has 8,000 members throughout its 13 clubs. SLSA President Graham Ford said the entire group was reeling from the disappointment of losing one of its three major sponsors.

“Our three-year national partnership with Holden Australia will not be extended following General Motors decision this week to cease trading in Australia and New Zealand at the end of this year,” he said. “SLSA was advised just prior to the public announcement by Holden management on Monday 17 February that they would cease vehicle sales, design and engineering, following a detailed analysis of the investment required for Holden to be competitive beyond the current generation of products. “SLSA is saddened to see such an iconic Australian company in this situation and is disappointed that this means we will not be able to continue what has been a positive and productive partnership of mutual benefit.” Mr Ford added that SLSA, which consists of almost 174,000 members, was actively searching for a new sponsor. He said Holden had provided reassurance it would honour its existing agreement, scheduled to finish at the end of this calendar year. - Rebecca Riddle

Rathmines Park’s makeover Rathmines Park will undergo a makeover after Lake Macquarie City Council placed its plans for the site on public exhibition. The council’s plans include the former RAAF seaplane base and its surviving buildings, as well as sports grounds, parkland, playgrounds and the lake foreshore. Recreation and Land Planning Coordinator, Stephen Prince, said the council was moving into its second phase of development for a Master Plan and Plan of Management for Rathmines Park. “Last year, we engaged the community to find out how they used the park, and to get their ideas about how we could improve the space into the future,” he said. “The outcomes from those engagement activities, as well as recommendations from our Conservation Management Plan

adopted last year, have been used to inform the draft Concept Master Plans for the park. “I encourage the community to view the accompanying Issues and Opportunities Paper, which outlines ideas within the draft Master Concept Plans.” The draft concept plans include improvements to recreation and sports facilities, improved access, new landscaping and vegetation, and enhanced interpretation of the site’s military and Aboriginal history. The council will host two drop-in sessions today (Thursday 5 March), with project staff on-site to provide further information and collect community feedback. Lake Macquarie’s development boom continues to scale new heights, with almost $1.6 billion worth of development approved across the city last year. The council’s chief executive Morven Cameron said that, while the overall number of determined Development Applications (DAs) fell slightly, their value increased from $1.2 billion in 2018 to more than $1.5 billion in 2019. “To support our city’s growth, we need greater housing choice, more jobs and new community infrastructure,” Ms Cameron said. “Approving appropriate development is the first step towards achieving those goals.” The 2019 calendar year saw a record 1,042 residential lots

released to the market in Lake Macquarie. Cameron Park, Morisset Park and Toronto were the top three suburbs in terms of the total value of DAs approved. Last year also marked the start of major new residential releases at Wyee and on the former Pasminco site at Boolaroo. Ms Cameron, who spoke last week at an Urban Development Institute of Australia function, said the council was on track to deliver more than $110 million in capital works this financial year, with 10% funded by development contributions. “We are continuing to work with the development industry and other stakeholders to increase this spend,” she said.

news One man’s crusade to make a difference There are eight deaths by suicide in Australia every single day. Ian Kidd wants this to change. On Monday 30 March, the 64-year-old will embark on a solo 1,800-kilometre bike ride from Lake Eyre to Mount Kosciuszko. The Hunter resident is taking on the challenge in a bid to raise money for his local Lifeline centre. It’s a cause close to his heart as he has struggled with his own mental health for many years. Mr Kidd was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following the tragic death of three youths who he had been relatively close to, and the death of another who he had unsuccessfully performed CPR on. They had taken their own lives. A medically retired teacher, cycling has played a major role in his survival.

“I’m on a bit of crusade to get my life back together,” he said. “In 2018, I was at a really low point and things have been on the up since then.” His ride, titled From the Lowest Point, is symbolic of his battle and the battle of others. “I will be travelling from Australia’s lowest point (in altitude) to its highest,” he said. “This, in some small way, is meant to be symbolic of my struggles and the struggles of others with mental health.” He added that he hoped his journey would bring awareness to the importance of mental health services and seeking help. According to Mr Kidd, mental health and mental illness are still taboo topics. He believes people must become more accepting of them to open

a dialogue. “A lot of people are scared of the topic,” he said. “You mention mental health or mental illness and people just hide but if people are open about it and people are accepting it makes it so much easier.” Mr Kidd hopes to raise $7,100 to cover the cost of 100 face-toface counselling sessions, which are available to the community at no cost through the Lifeline Counselling Service. Lifeline Direct’s Karissa Lewis said they were very grateful to Mr Kidd. The talented athlete, who is preparing to make her debut in the National Basketball League’s offseason, must work part-time to help supplement her income. “The commitment we make to our sport is huge,” Ms McLean said. “We train daily, travel to play games, and often spend hours each day in the gym. “Add on the community involvement that’s part of the job, and which we love to do, and it’s difficult to be able to make time for a job that could bring in the money to

170g uncooked bacon, diced 280g elbow macaroni 2/3 cup (179g) cheese sauce 1 tsp kosher salt, plus more for sprinkling 3/4 cup (20g) roughly chopped baby spinach 1/2 cup (58g) shredded cheddar cheese 3 large eggs, beaten until well blended, divided 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, divided 2 cups (230g) seasoned dry breadcrumbs 6 cups (1.4L) vegetable oil, for frying

Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp. Drain well and set aside. Cook the macaroni just past al dente according to package directions. Drain well and transfer to a medium mixing bowl. Stir in the cheese sauce, bacon, and salt and cool for 5 minutes. Fold in the spinach and cheddar cheese. Add 2 tablespoons (28ml) of the beaten eggs and 1/2 cup (63g) of the flour; mix until thoroughly blended. Take 1 heaped tablespoon (15ml) of the mixture and squeeze

it firmly in your hand to form a tight ball; repeat to form about 30 balls and arrange them on the parchment-lined sheet pan. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and chill for at least 20 minutes or overnight. To bread the mac and cheese balls, place 3 small mixing bowls on a work surface. Place the remaining 1 1/2 cups (188g) of flour in 1 bowl, the remaining eggs in the next bowl, and the breadcrumbs in the last bowl. One at a time, compact a ball in your hands again and coat it lightly in the flour and then in the egg, allowing the excess to drip off. Finally, roll the ball in the breadcrumbs, pressing gently so they adhere. Return the breaded ball to the sheet pan and repeat with the remaining balls. Cover the pan lightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate until you are ready to fry. Attach a deep-fry thermometer to the side of a large heavy-bottomed pan and add oil to a depth of 2.5cm. Place the pan over medium-high heat. Place a paper towel-lined sheet pan beside the stove. When the oil reaches 182°C, carefully transfer the mac and cheese balls to the oil, working in batches to avoid crowding the pan. Fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side, and transfer to the paper towel-lined pan to drain. Sprinkle lightly with salt. Let cool for a few minutes.

Festival puts city on “world culture map”

Hannah Indigo’s love affair with hula hoops first started when she received one as a Christmas present at the age of 23. The Novocastrian began practicing in her living room and then decided to do an eight-week course. “I fell in love with it, realised I could make a living out of it, and quit my job,” Indigo says. “I struggled for many years before getting to where I am now.” Indigo, who is in her sixth year as a performing artist, will join a smorgasbord of talent at this month’s Newcastle Fringe Festival. The festival promises to offer as much variety in entertainment as possible – comedy, theatre, children’s theatre, music, dance, cabaret and circus – to cater for all interests across five days from Wednesday 18 to Sunday 22 March. Indigo’s performance at the festival, which has been described as a bulging hour of eye-opening and awkwardly arousing cabaret, includes circus, drag, sideshow, magic, and a risqué puppet show. OMG WTF will hit the stage on Saturday 21 March from 7.30pm at The Lock-Up in Hunter Street, Newcastle. For Indigo, it’s a chance to showcase her creativity. “I think fringe culture is really important for

creating a platform for artists of any discipline – people, such as myself, who may be overlooked in a corporate entertainment world,” she says. Apart from Indigo, the festival’s fifth edition will boast more than 30 acts and almost 80 performances at five venues within the city. Newcastle Fringe Festival Director, Phillip Aughey, says the “colossal” program will offer a welcome alternative to mainstream entertainment. “The idea is that it’s totally open access, which means that any performing artist throughout the world can perform there,” he says. “Given that scenario, an artist can perform what they like, so it becomes art for art’s sake. “That’s what makes me so enthusiastic about fringe, because you don’t see that on commercial television.” Aughey adds Newcastle’s “wonderful underbelly of culture” will be showcased within a professional environment, while he expects the festival to attract thousands of visitors to the region. “[The festival] brings people into Newcastle to see the fringe and, most importantly, puts the city on a world culture map,” he says. The story behind the Fringe festival The Newcastle Fringe has quickly established itself as one of the highlights on the Newcastle cultural calendar. This year will see the fifth Newcastle Fringe. The idea was conceived in 2014 when current and founding director of the Fringe, Phillip Aughey, took his play, The Exchange, to the Edinburgh Fringe. One morning in Edinburgh, whilst Mr Aughey was cooking his cast scrambled eggs, one of the cast members, Matt MacFarlane, said: “You know Phil, you should start up a Newcastle Fringe.” The seed was sown into Mr Aughey’s mind. Three days later, he ventured into a park in Edinburgh beyond the Meadows, placed himself on a park bench, not to leave until the Newcastle Fringe had been nutted out. Nearly two hours later, he rose. The concept of a Fringe festival, which originated in Edinburgh, is a festival of performing arts. They are open to all artists and to any artistic

concept. Acts in Fringe festivals do not necessarily have to conform to convention. Thus, Fringe festivals have become a great showplace of art for art’s sake. Fringe festivals have also proven themselves to be a great launching pad for careers. Being a performing artist himself, Mr Aughey came at the concept from the standpoint of an artist. If the artists and the venues don’t make money from the Newcastle Fringe, there won’t be a Newcastle Fringe. Realising how artists face most of the financial risk in presenting their productions, he considered how to ensure viability for the artists. Two points were evident. Keep the overheads for artists as low as possible and keep the festival small. Other considerations were that the Newcastle Fringe be open to everyone and zero censorship. Given that Newcastle has a cultural underbelly, local performers were to be encouraged not only to produce their acts but to give local artists experience in professional production and marketing. With the confidence from their tour

with the Newcastle Fringe, they could then go further with their artistic careers. It took Mr Aughey 16 months to organise the first festival, which was held in January 2016. Since then, the Newcastle Fringe has grown and, this year, boasts 34 different shows. The audience numbers from last year are well over 100% greater than in 2016. Over the five years, gaining funds has been the Newcastle Fringe’s greatest challenge. Port Waratah Coal Services, continuing their keen interest in the community of Newcastle, has supported the festival for the last three years. For the 2020 festival, Newcastle Fringe is grateful for the support of AGL as well, and to The Lock-Up with ‘in kind’ support.

What the Fringe brings to the local community Given the nature of a Fringe festival, audiences are treated to performing art that they are not likely to see anywhere else. In an environment where entertainment must be commercial and have broad appeal, Fringe festivals present art with no such constraints. No formula-created processes need to be involved. Fringe festivals give a great variety of very creative works. At this year’s Newcastle Fringe, several of the acts are also being very charitable. “YT Dingo”, presented by Travers Ross, is doing one show at the CAS Hamilton at 9pm on 21 March. A very avantgarde dance, music and performance art piece, Travers brings a new concept to performance art which is very modern and generally “out there”. Travers is

willing to conduct a masterclass/ workshop for local dancers and performers who wish to learn more about their art. For details, check out Newcastle Fringe on Facebook or the Newcastle Fringe website. Local performer Hannah Indigo is bringing a cabaret act, including Burlesque, Comedy, Magic, Circus and Sideshow. Hannah and her troupe have performed successfully for many years and are always entertaining. She is performing for one show only at The Lock-Up on 21 March at 7:30pm. “100%” is a heart-warming and very funny show from Sean Conway a rising comedian from Perth. Sean is donating the proceeds of his show to a local Newcastle charity. He is appearing for three shows at the Grand Hotel at 9pm from

19 to 21 March. “Esoteric”, produced by Sneakyville Theatre Company from Victoria, is a sometimes dramatic, sometimes funny political piece about politics and conspiracy theories. This very progressive theatre company will be doing a free Q&A session after their Saturday performance at The Lock-Up at 6pm. “The Improv Job”, from newly formed local company Newy Improv Factory, is as it says. A show that

interacts with the audience to create a production. Those in attendance will have a lot of fun. After the 9pm show at the Royal Exchange on 18 March, Newcastle Fringe is providing slices of pizza for those that attend. At 3pm on 22 March at the CAS Hamilton, the Jane Austen Society in Newcastle will be holding a free performance where they explore the good, bad and downright ugly of all things Jane Austen.

Variety of entertainment on show at fifth edition One of the beauties of a Fringe festival is that it caters for a magnitude of different tastes in entertainment. This year’s Newcastle Fringe is no exception. “Miss Fairy” is a show for children filled with games, stories, wishes, magic and fairy dust. Marie Jeffries has been performing this show to very excited children for years. It is a proven success. She performs at the Adelaide Fringe and does regular tours. This is a great show to take the children to – it is on at the Royal Exchange between 11am and 3pm, Saturday and Sunday. The 2020 Newcastle Fringe has three very talented stand-up comedians appearing. All three are at the Great Northern Hotel on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Ben Stevenson, from Coffs Harbour, brings his special brand

of humour that has been a hit at the Melbourne and Darwin festivals. Local comedian Adam Jacobs is doing his new show, “Daughter Talks”, which is a very funny show about bringing up a child. Exciting talent Jamal Abdul is appearing with his quirky brand of cultural humour. Also at the Great Northern is a very exciting new jazz group from Tasmania featuring Evan Carydakis. This award-winning group is on the way up. See them before they become famous at 4.30pm on the Saturday and Sunday. One of the Fringe acts is a duo from Adelaide performing “Amore e Morte”. A mixture of Theatre, Music and Cabaret, combining cultures from Italy and Australia, a story of love, passion and crime. “Amore e Morte” has been a great success at this year’s Adelaide Fringe and is on

Green thumb growing city’s plant community Green Thumb Social is Jessica William’s passion project. The Hunter-based plant lover started the event last year as a way of bringing people who love nature together. During each social event, people gather, swap plants and produce and connect. Jess organises an event every two months and she says the atmosphere is magical. “We have such a diverse mix of people,” she says. “People socialise and the buzz is amazing, everyone is just laughing and smiling. “It makes it really special. “It’s a community of people who love plants.” Jess says that plants and nature are very therapeutic for her. “I was drawn to horticultural

studies because I really want to help the environment and care for it,” she says. “I am worried by the loss of plant and animal species and I don’t like to see anything that is living suffer. “Plus, they also look beautiful.” Jess has a number of valuable tips for first-time plant owners. Tip One: Buy the best soil you can afford. Try and get soil with the red ticks as it’s an indication it’s a premium product. Tip Two: Stay positive and don’t get disheartened. You may have some plant failures but that’s how you learn. Research what growing conditions your plant needs and stick to that advice as much as possible. Tip Three: Always use pots with drainage and never overwater your plants! Plants hate wet feet.

Jess loves all plants, but these are some of her favourites.

1. Schefflera actinophylla (Umbrella Tree) This native Australian plant is toxic to pets as it contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause irritation of the mouth and throat. Jess suggests keeping this plant potted indoors or outdoors. It needs medium to bright indirect light to thrive indoors. To maintain its glossy leaves and prevent pests, give it a shower every few weeks. She loves this plant because it adds a tropical vibe to any space.

This highly decorative plant also contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to pets. This moisture loving plant is better suited to indoor conditions. It needs to be kept warm and moist. A great plant for the bathroom. It needs high humidity to thrive and appreciates misting and being kept away from open windows and drafts. It also has powerful air purifying properties and tolerates low-light spots. Jess purchased this plant from a garage sale three years ago and, since caring for it, it is thriving.

Dracaena is mildly toxic to pets (the chemical compound saponin is toxic to them). It is perfect as an indoor specimen as the gold speckles will add interest and light to any space. It is a low maintenance plant that responds well to a light prune. Prune above the node for a flush of new growth and dense foliage. Jess loves the Dracaena surculosa because it sparkles against other plants with all green foliage and seems to put on new growth all the time.

This plant is safe for pets. Jess’s specimen grows outdoors in a protected position and gets filtered morning sun. It can be bit of a diva; it needs high humidity to thrive. Increase humidity by adding a pebble tray, misting regularly and huddling your plants. The leaves look like they have been perfectly painted and the pink underside is just stunning. Make use of your valuable space Today, many gardens have been reduced to paved courtyards and balconies. This is the result of lifestyle changes, where a trip to the gym or a jog provides weekly exercise. One of my sons has opted for apartment living rather than having his spare time dictated to by regular pruning and watering. But, like many gardeners who swap gardens for views, he quickly resorted to large pots and trees on his balconies, without a great deal of success. Elevation makes it difficult to grow tall plants which will get wind burnt, hence Simon has resorted to low maintenance succulents and rocks, but this doesn’t satisfy a real gardener for long. What then are the alternatives? Consider the site’s structure. Is it sunny or shady? Is it elevated and prone to prevailing winds?

Great effect can be achieved by the grouping of pots, large, small, high and low – let’s consider creating an orchard in pots. Fruit and vegetables don’t just look amazing in pots, they thrive. The most popular choice for edible crops is citrus – the introduction of dwarf varieties is ideal for smaller gardens. Regular watering is essential but remember never to fertilise with citrus food when growing in pots. One of the hardiest fruit trees for small gardens is the olive, which I fi nd excellent for pots. They have the advantage of being wind tolerant and grow quickly. Plant brightly coloured annuals such as blue lobelias around the base to highlight the grey leaves of the olive. Using your valuable space for fruit, herbs and vegetables that look attractive will be more rewarding than a non-productive green plant that still needs care.

My favourite things FAMILY I have been very happily married to Jim for almost 49 years and we are very proud of our two amazing children who both have equally amazing partners. We are super proud grandparents of our four grandchildren, three boys and a girl, ranging in age from 10 to 16.

PUBLIC EDUCATION With a long and happy career in NSW schools, I remain a strong supporter and advocate for public education and its values of social justice and fairness. I believe that everyone has the right to an excellent education with access to opportunities which address inequity, celebrate diversity, and develop a love of learning and personal values.

FEARLESS FLOWERS COORDINATOR

Since retiring from her full -time job as a high school principal in 2005, Wilma Simmons (pictured above right) has enjoyed life as a textile artist, grandmother and community volunteer. Wilma likes to focus on supporting community needs through art. She is currently preparing for International Women’s Day on 8 March, during which the Fearless Flowers Market at Timeless Textiles will raise funds for ovarian cancer research. For 12 months, the Wednesday Group has met weekly to create beautiful handmade flowers, which will be exchanged for donations to Pink Meets Teal, supporting Nicola Bowden’s research program at HMRI. As a Rotarian, Wilma is also involved in community service with her club locally and has in the past worked for several years on the Mando Project building and supporting a school and village in the Eastern Highlands, Papua New Guinea. She also supports Seven Women, a self -sustainable humanitarian project providing education and employment for disadvantaged women, and, with a fellow Rotarian, visited the project in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2019. 70

FRIENDS I appreciate and enjoy being with my friends. I love being part of local groups which offer me great friendship and support – NCEATA (Newcastle Creative Embroiderers and Textile Artists), Gumnut Dollies-Newcastle, Tai Chi for Health, the Rotary Club of Wallsend-Maryland, and, of course – the Wednesday Group at Timeless Textiles.

NATURE I especially love native plants. Wandering in our garden or walking around our neighbourhood in Lambton always cheers me up. Most of my art is inspired by what I see and appreciate around me.
