This week... From the editor I finally grew impatient at waiting for the police to arrive to investigate the damage to my car last November. It was parked in a side street in Lake Macquarie while I was at work, but someone had kindly sideswiped it leading to thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. After a few hours of waiting, I checked in again with the police assistance line. The officer who called me back was apologetic, stating there had been a large volume of domestic violence-related incidents they needed to attend to. I was shocked but, sadly, probably shouldn’t have been. Many of you would have seen or heard the latest high-profile story of Hannah Clarke. She, and her three children, were doused in petrol and set alight inside their family car by her estranged husband, Rowan Baxter, in another horrific murder-suicide – this time in Brisbane – last week. Statistics show at least one woman is murdered by her current or former partner in Australia on a weekly basis. It’s one of the significant issues behind the upcoming annual International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March. While the international movement celebrates womanhood, it also draws attention to the issues women face.

news Organisations honoured to receive generous bequest Sheila Woodcock’s legacy will live on through the work of community organisations. The generous Novocastrian, who passed away in 2018, was never one to speak about money. So, when her bequest of $14 million – the majority of her estate – was announced last week, it came as a shock to many. Cancer Council NSW, the Australian Red Cross, the RSPCA, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service were among 15 charitable groups that shared the spoils during a special ceremony in Broadmeadow. Ms Woodcock’s bequest is set to fund new research, training, construction, and more. Her second cousin, Kent Woodcock, said she was a very “private, strong, and independent

woman” who thought of these charities as family. “She regarded them as friends and it gave her a real interest. She built relationships and friendships with them,” he said. He added that Ms Woodcock had been donating to these charities for years and that one of her last wishes was for them to come together to celebrate her life. “What the charities are doing with the funds, it’s amazing,” he said. “It’s an awful word but they call it a game changer – she’s buying the Royal Flying Doctor Service another aircraft for $1.2 million, she’s funding the training of 25 guide dogs, which is $50,000 per guide dog, and [so much more].” Newcastle organisation Breast Cancer Trials is receiving $450,000 to

fund research through a new Sheila Woodcock Travel Grant. The grant will be awarded to a young researcher each year to attend the Breast Cancer Trials’ Annual Scientific Meeting. Ms Woodcock had been donating to their organisation since 2004. “I think, for Sheila, she very much wanted to support our research to change things in the future so that things would improve for other people,” Breast Cancer Trials’ Julie

Callaghan said. “Over the years, she very generously contributed to a lot of our research programs and, of course, has left us a very generous bequest. “Every donation, large and small, is critical to what we are able to achieve. We’re delighted to have been a recipient and to have enjoyed a lovely relationship with Sheila over that time. “She’s a very generous woman.” - Elizabeth Symington

news Popular café forced to close Staff at Lexie’s on the Beach in Stockton have been left devastated after severe erosion forced the popular café to close. The closure followed an independent report from coastal engineers, which advised City of Newcastle that the building was at immediate risk of significant damage or failure in a one-in-twoyear storm event. However, after uproar from the community and Lexie’s on the Beach staff, City of Newcastle is working with the owners on a solution to reopen the café. Lexie’s on the Beach Owner, Nick Sovechles, voiced his frustration with the initial decision, stating it was hard to understand. He argued the building was structurally sound and was at no higher risk than the surf club. “This building was built in 1906

– it’s not going anywhere,” he said. After meeting with council Mr Sovechles said they were taking steps forward to re-establish the much-loved café. “While reopening Lexie’s remains our preferred option, we understand that the issue of securing insurance for the building must first be resolved,” he said. “In the meantime, we will work with City of Newcastle on options including a temporary café beside the Stockton Ferry Wharf. “What is clear is that the Stockton community cannot take many more financial hits. It needs commercial ventures that attract people to Stockton, and a café near the very popular Children’s Active Play Hub is one way of doing that.” City of Newcastle Infrastructure and Property Director, Ken Liddell, said the building was closed

because of the risk it posed to public safety. “We understand the direct impact this will have for the operators of the café, staff and its patrons, as Lexie’s is a muchloved and valuable part of the community,”he said. Until a solution is confirmed staff at the café have been forced to find other jobs. Lexie’s on the Beach Head Chef Mel Gato said the closure came as a

real shock. “I’m in the same boat as everyone else,” she said. “We had to rush out and find another job – we are devastated. I’ve got a mortgage and three kids to look after.” She is hopeful they will be able to reopen soon and continue to serve the community. A national online influenza surveillance system will track the potential coronavirus outbreak in Australia and New Zealand. FluTracking will provide a snapshot of the spread of respiratory illnesses at the community level and will help health authorities track and understand the severity of influenza or coronavirus in the area. “There were over 40,000 participants in FluTracking in 2019 and we are hoping to have over 50,000 people in 2020,” Public Health Physician and FluTracking Coordinator, Craig Dalton, said. Participants receive a weekly report and a map showing the latest FluTracking activity. Dr Dalton from the University of Newcastle is urging everyone to join. “Anyone can join, and it only takes 10 seconds per week to do the survey,” he said.

“We particularly need parents with young children and people living in rural and remote areas but welcome more people from the larger cities.” Coronavirus has very similar symptoms to influenza and other respiratory viruses. The key to differentiating it from influenza involves assessing changes in the burden and the severity of illness and the participants reports of their laboratory results for the virus. Dr Dalton hopes the surveillance system will provide useful insight into coronavirus in Australia. FluTracking is a partnership between the Australian and New Zealand governments, Hunter New England Local Health District, Hunter Medical Research Institute, and the University of Newcastle. news Clock tower’s restoration

Make 2020 the year you step up to clean up.

The Maitland Town Hall clock tower’s transformation has begun, with restoration works underway this week. Built in 1890, with the clock faces not installed until 1936, the tower has a rich history and is recognised as a cultural heritage item of state significance. The planned works will be sympathetic to previous techniques and work towards preserving the building’s heritage. Head contractor HBS Group will be completing the construction over the coming months. The group is experienced with heritage works and will work with a Local Heritage Consultant and a specialised Heritage Structural Engineer. According to Maitland City Council’s Senior Project Architect, Ben Griffin, the restoration is part of the ongoing asset management of the town hall. “It’s really important that council respects the heritage significance of buildings like Maitland Town Hall, which is why the timeline to complete this work has been strongly considered to ensure it is done to the best possible standard,” he said. There is a range of ongoing works happening at the town hall in addition to the current clock tower restoration. These include works to address damp issues, as well as facility upgrades incorporated with the construction of the Maitland Administration Centre, starting later this year. Luci’s brave battle with breast cancer It took less than eight months for Luci Mackersey’s world to turn upside down. From her quiet suburban existence in West Wallsend, the 32-year-old mother-of-two is now in a battle to save her life. Luci has breast cancer. After finding a lump in her left breast in May 2019, the slight Tamworth-born brunette underwent a biopsy and was told it was benign. Yet by 13 January, at 33 weeks pregnant, a follow-up scan confirmed Luci had grade three breast cancer and treatment was required immediately. Both Luci and her husband Tim believe the initial negative prognosis may have been because her body was saturated with hormones, having just suffered her second miscarriage. Sadly, this time there was no mistake. “I was in shock,” Luci said. “I was 31 and I had a toddler to look after and a baby growing inside me. “I was too far into my pregnancy to start any treatments, so doctors decided baby first, then chemo.

“I didn’t know how I was going to do this.” Cancer, Luci soon learned, had no conscience. “You don’t have to be in your 50s, you can be in your 20s, or even younger. “No one in my family has cancer. I don’t know why I got it.” On 23 January, a fortnight after first hearing ‘the C-word’, Luci had a full mastectomy. Thirteen days later, baby Ada Amelia Mackersey was born by cesarean section at just 33 weeks on 5 February. The two kilogram bundle did not leave neonatal care until earlier this week. Today (Thursday 27 February), Luci will begin five-months of chemotherapy. “I’m brave on the outside, but I’m scared on the inside,” Luci said. “I’m dreading the chemo. Getting sick really scares me.” For husband Tim, who works in food services at John Hunter Hospital, losing his wife of just 15 months is unimaginable. “It was a kick in the guts when we first found out. I’m scared for her but we can only deal with

news Water restrictions downgraded A deluge of rainfall has lifted dam levels and brought about a downgrade in the region’s water restrictions. NSW Minister for Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey, announced the decision to cut back from level two to level one during a visit to Grahamstown Dam last week. It follows significant rainfall across the Hunter. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, more than 190mm fell at Maitland, 122mm in Newcastle and just over 180mm in Cessnock within the past month. “It has been a welcome relief to receive some much-needed rainfall after months of experiencing severe drought conditions in the Lower Hunter,” Ms Pavey said. “While local dams haven’t made a full recovery, they are in better shape than they were, having lifted 10% to more than 62% capacity in just over a week. “The Chichester catchment, in particular, has received decent falls, generating streamflow in

the Williams River and causing Chichester Dam to spill. “Although this is a positive step in our drought recovery we are not out of the woods yet, which is why it’s really important that we all continue to use water wisely and save it wherever we can.” Level one water restrictions permit outdoor watering before 10am and after 4pm with a trigger nozzle hose, and washing of vehicles with a bucket, trigger nozzle hose or pressure cleaner. Restrictions on sprinkler use and hosing hard surfaces remain in place. Hunter Water’s Acting Chief Executive, Graham Wood, encouraged the community to continue the great savings made since the introduction of water restrictions.

“Our community has shown us how much they love water by championing our water saving message and leading through action,” Mr Wood said. “Since the start of level one water restrictions locals have reduced consumption by 20% compared with what we expected given these weather conditions. “Whether it’s by reducing showers to four minutes, fixing leaks around the home or waiting for a full load before doing washing, we can all continue to play our part and conserve our precious resource.” Go to hunterwater.com.au/restrictions for more information on water restrictions. - Elizabeth Symington

Clean-up crew calling on the community to pitch in Communities from across the Hunter will gather to participate in Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday 1 March. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the annual event

and organisers hope it will be the biggest clean-up yet. Thousands of groups across the country will participate in the national movement including, Cardiff Area Sustainable

Neighbourhood Group, hosting an event at Wilkinson Park, Cardiff. Chairperson Gavin Ord hopes people will get behind the cause because he expects they will find a “fair bit of rubbish”. “I think [Clean Up Australia Day] has been so effective because it is something little people can do,” he says. “Most people want to help the community but don’t really have the time to be able to do it but if someone else has organised something and they can come along and volunteer for a few hours I think they really want to. “There are no obligations, they can just help out for that day and feel more attached to the community.” Gavin believes the best way to decrease littering is to lead by example. “If people can see an example of anyone on the street just picking up any piece of rubbish, they’ve found, through long term studies, that is

one of the best ways to get people to pick up litter,” he says. Clean Up Australia Day has close ties to the Hunter. In 1987, the area hosted a CleanUp Lake Macquarie event, which inspired founders Ian Kiernan and Kim McKay to kick-start a national movement and bring together communities to clean-up their area. Current chairperson and daughter of Ian, Pip Kiernan, says Australia creates 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, with most of it ending up in public spaces, waterways or landfill. “We’ve been cleaning up Australia for 30 years, but Australians are creating more waste than ever, so we need more help,” Pip says. The Cardiff event will start at 9am, with a clean-up of both the park and wetlands planned. Dive into the Wild West It will be water pistols at 10 paces when a new aqua fitness program targeting people with disability dives into West Wallsend Swim Centre. Lake Macquarie City Council’s Acting Manager Leisure Services, Paul Stone, said the program would be funded via a $9,600 Community Swimming Grant provided by the Australian Government and swimming’s governing body, Swimming Australia. “While all of our aqua fitness classes are accessible for most people in the community, offering classes tailored for people with disability helps build participants’ confidence in the water,” Mr Stone said. “It’s also a fantastic social outlet, contributing to ongoing mental and physical wellbeing.” The classes will kick off in April at the swim centre. Classes are already booked out by Sunnyfield Disability Services clients, but similar initiatives may be rolled out across the city. Swimming Australia Chief Executive, Leigh Russell, said the more people who had access to swim lessons and water safety training, the better. “Swimming is such a vital life skill, and I know this funding will go a long way in promoting and facilitating these skills to those most at risk in the community,” Ms Russell said.

Athletes face the school of hard knocks A sniff of smelling salts and back you go. That’s how 55-year-old Kotara Bears Rugby League Club’s Craig Woolcock remembers concussion back in the day. “I was 19 and got knocked out cold,” he said. “I can remember being given smelling salts, getting back up and running around again. “The next thing I remember was being in the change rooms. “It’s not a very nice feeling that’s for sure.” Dizziness, confusion, headaches, nausea, irritability, memory loss and light sensitivity are all symptoms associated with concussion. With collision sport season fast approaching, leading Newcastle brain trauma expert Dr Andrew Gardner warned concussion should not be ignored. “By definition a concussion is any disturbance in normal neurological function,” Dr Gardner said. “So, something as simple as an athlete reporting that they had ‘seeing stars’ or had ‘blurred vision’ or ‘feel pressure in the head’ meets criteria for concussion.” Newcastle sporting clubs are heeding his

warnings. Mr Woolcock said his junior rugby club was actively working to reduce the risk through altered play and protective headgear. “At age five, a concussion is not likely as the rules are designed for safe play,” he said. “No contact above the shoulder are the rules and referees are on the lookout for risky situations. “During tackles, a child can submit, and the referee will stop play. “This is designed to keep all the kids safe.” Cardiff Hawks AFL Club spokesman Callan Buchan agreed modified play and education were paramount in reducing incidences of concussion. “More progress has been made with changing the way a game is played by training players better and introducing or tightening rules to reduce the risk of head trauma,” he said. Mr Buchan said the club was dismissive of headgear, not actively promoting it to parents. “We have found that it provides a false sense of security and actually results in further head contact related issues as well as an increased risk of heat exhaustion.”

Dr Gardner also warned against headgear. “At present the currently available commercial products do not mitigate the risk of concussion,” he said. “At the community level all concussion policy strongly advocates for a recognise, remove, refer policy. The 27-year-old, who grew up a few streets back from Merewether Beach, will be the top local seed in the men's Surfest Newcastle Pro next month. Following a solid championship tour last year, Callinan knows there is "good" pressure on his shoulders heading into a new season. The world number 14 claimed some impressive results in 2019, placing third at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in Victoria, as well as fifth at the Margaret River Pro and Quiksilver Pro France. Despite the lofty expectations, Callinan says he just can't wait to do what he loves in front of his home crowd. "It's always nice to start the year off at home," he says. "To be able to sleep in my own

Spaghetti with Prawns and lemon in Arrabbiata sauce 340g Barilla Spaghetti 1 jar Barilla Arrabbiata sauce 400g peeled prawns, tails on 1 clove garlic, chopped 1g chilli flakes 20g capers Âź glass dry white wine 20g parsley, chopped 1 lemon, zest and juice 40g butter, cubed Extra Virgin Olive oil Rock salt, for pasta water Sea salt, to taste

Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil. Once boiling, add rock salt. We recommend 7 grams per litre of water. Drop Spaghetti into the boiling salted water and cook as per instructions on the box. In a large fry pan gently heat some Extra Virgin Olive oil. Add the garlic, and once golden in colour add the chilli, prawns and capers. Season with salt and sprinkle with wine, allowing the alcohol to evaporate. Add the Arrabbiata sauce and bring to a simmer. Drain the pasta 2 minutes before the recommended time, saving 1 ladle of cooking water. Place the drained pasta and cooking water in with the sauce to finish cooking. Add butter, parsley, lemon zest and juice. Mix until well combined. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil and top with parsley.

Casarecce with Spicy Salami, Saffron and Ricotta in Napoletana sauce

Serves 4 340g Barilla Casarecce 1 jar Napoletana sauce 100g spicy salami, cut julienne 1g saffron 1 clove garlic, chopped 40ml white wine 20g butter, unsalted 20g fresh basil, sliced 100g ricotta Extra Virgin Olive oil Rock salt, for pasta water

Drop the Casarecce into the boiling salted water and cool as per instructions on the box. Heat a small amount of oil in a large fry pan, add salami and cook for 2 minutes or until golden. Add garlic and saffron. Pour wine and allow the alcohol to evaporate. Add the Napoletana sauce and simmer for 2 minutes. Drain the pasta 2 minutes before the recommended cooking time, reserving a small ladle of cooking water. Place pasta and cooking water in with the sauce to finish cooking. The story of a 50-year-old woman living alone in the Icelandic mountains and raging war with her local aluminium industry will headline a celebration of International Women’s Day next month. Woman at War, a 101-minute film about independent environmental activist Halla, will be screened at The Museum of Arts and Culture as part of Lake Macquarie City Council’s annual festivities. Chief Executive Officer Morven Cameron said the film’s heroine made it a worthy choice. “Women at War’s female lead stands up for what she believes in – exactly the kind of woman we want to celebrate and recognise here in Lake Macquarie,” she said. However, according to Morven, celebrating should be followed by continued action. “International Women’s Day is an important reminder of the continued effort needed to improve gender equality,” she said. Music festival’s Newcastle pit stop Newcastle’s own punk cabaret band, The Pits, is set to open a national music festival when it hits the city. The Drop Festival will transform Empire Park, Bar Beach, into a hive of activity and music on Saturday 7 March as some of Australia’s most loved music acts take to the stage. Debut book awakens dormant passion It burned within her for two decades, yet it took Karuah mother Carmen Allen a little over a year to collate her first children’s book. Molly’s Big Decision is an allegory about an orphan invited by the King to become a Princess and live within the Royal Palace. By accepting the role, Molly Greenwood commits to undertaking secret missions, rewarded with magic tokens. The story is a tale of joy, sadness, forgiveness, acceptance and kindness in the face of injustice. Allen said the 80-page book, suitable for readers aged seven to nine, was the result of a childhood dream. “I started writing it 20 years ago and saved it on a floppy disc,” she said.

“I was so unhappy with it I threw it in a drawer in disgust.” Thankfully for her new fans, the manuscript was retrieved from its hiding place and tested on students at Tanilba Bay Primary School. “The deputy principal and one of the teachers read the book to the kids and they loved it,” Allen said. “So, I began the task of having it edited.” Allen’s self-published work is a labour-of-love. “I’ve written this book [because] children need to hear that they are unconditionally loved and accepted just as they are, warts and all,” she said. Despite the personal cost involved, the TAFE Newcastle employee said the experience had opened the floodgates to create

more children’s stories. “The book has been something positive and creative in an otherwise challenging year,” she said. “I have loved escaping some of my tough days and going into Molly’s world for a while.” Molly’s Big Decision will launch at the East Maitland Public Library on Saturday 7 March at 11am. - Rebecca Riddle

Wild Atlantic Coast comes to life in art Textile artist Nicola Henley evokes the beauty and wildness of her Irish home in a Wild Atlantic Coast exhibition at Newcastle’s Timeless Textiles. This accomplished artist brings an energetic new show for her return exhibition at Timeless Textiles. Portraying the natural sculpting of wind and water on Ireland’s west coastline, she conjures the majesty of that environment in her new works. “Over the last two years, I have also been inspired by the work of the English painter William Turner,” Henley said. “I have tried to capture the skies, landscape, energy, colour and forces that I have experienced along the coast in my new collection.” The textile works suggest birds in motion and offer hints of the landforms and rock formations seen in the unique limestone area of the Burren mountain ranges. “The ranges, with their subtle and changing palette, deliver drama, which unfolds minute by minute,” she describes. Working from field sketches, photos and memory, Henley develops a range of images in the studio.

These are then transferred onto silk screens using a photographic stencil process, then printed multiple times onto dyed calico. Using brushes, the artist then works textile pigments into the surface, building up colour and texture before the piece is washed, then overprinted and painted again. Her intricate works are then embroidered, using both hand and machine stitching, often applying a range of printed and hand-made Japanese papers. The Wild Atlantic Coast exhibition will go until Sunday 8 March.

A sigh of relief It’s not quite autumn, the leap year adding on an extra day of summer, but on Sunday gardeners can heave a sigh of relief and begin to repair the ravages of this summer. If the predicted rain arrives, fertilise the lawn and top dress any bare patches left by the army grub. Apply dolomite to sweeten the soil and throw around some slow release fertiliser such as Bounceback to stimulate growth whilst it’s still warm. March is ideal to fertilise citrus when the weather cools - this should be done carefully, do not use citrus food on potted plants as this can cause leaf drop. Use Flourish for citrus regularly and apply Bounceback. Feed ground grown citrus with poultry manure, water out under the drip line before feeding, then water in. Two or three weeks later follow this with citrus fertiliser, again watering. Some citrus will have leaf damage from the leaf miner

House plants that need repotting should be done before the cold weather arrives. My favourite things ACTING Given my speech impediment in my younger years, I was never given the chance to act on stage until my high school needed a singer to perform Dick Deadeye in HMS Pinafore. The bug was then caught. I studied Communications at Charles Sturt Uni and after 20 years of running my own theatre company, Iâ€™ve lost count of the number of performances Iâ€™ve been a part of.

COUNTRY DRIVING I have driven around Australia about four times, including in 1981, when I drove a Holden Torana across the country for 11 months.

THOROUGHBREDS Given my love of horses, I have spent 27 years in the thoroughbred industry. This includes working on many studs and racing stables before training my own horses. My two smartest horses being Lakshmi, four wins, and Wellmet, four wins.
