This week...

From the editor I’ve spent the past few days thinking about the fragility of life.

I know it seems a bit dark, especially coming off a long weekend, but a few major news stories in the past week got me thinking. Firstly, it’s the rising death toll from the Coronavirus epidemic, which originated in China but has since seen cases reported in the United States, Thailand, Hong Kong, France, Vietnam and Australia, as well as several other countries.

Apart from the Coronavirus, I woke on Monday morning to hear of the sad news that global basketball legend Kobe Bryant and a number of passengers, including his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, had died in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles. It goes without saying that everyone's life is of equal importance but, when tragedy strikes celebrities such as Kobe, or someone you know, it emphasises the importance of living each day like it's your last.

Our cover stars this week, The Amazing Race Australia winners, Tim Sattler and Rod Jones, are two people who clearly live life to the fullest.

Originally hailing from Lake Macquarie, the dynamic duo discuss how the reality television series has changed their lives for the better, as well as what is in store for the future, on pages 12 and 13.

news Fundraiser to support disaster relief Norma Taylor hopes her fundraiser will bring the community together.

Ms Taylor was tired of feeling like she couldn’t help, so she decided to organise an event that would make a real difference.

The 8 Ball Fundraiser, marked for Saturday 8 February, will raise money for Team Rubicon Australia’s bushfire and drought relief.

With live performances, a mini runway, an auction, lucky beanie dip and raffles, the fundraiser promises to offer something for everyone.

“I was inspired by [Team Rubicon Australia’s] litres for the land appeal,” Ms Taylor said.

“The drought is still so devastating and I felt like I needed to do something but I haven’t got the manpower to do it, so I saw that these people were taking water to people in the drought.

“I thought the way to do things would be to get behind them.”

Ms Taylor said that, in addition to the fundraising, “it’s about people getting together and feeling good”.

She hopes people can have a bit of fun while

Team Rubicon Australia’s primary mission is to provide relief to areas that have been affected by natural disaster.

Chief Executive Geoff Evans said the registered charity took veterans who were coming out of the military and retrained them in disaster response.

“Veterans are ideally suited to this environment and, by deploying them to natural disasters around Australia, they can find a renewed sense of purpose in service to the community,” he said.

“Our business focus is all about bringing help and hope to the survivors of natural disasters.

“If we help them take the first step, we find that they can take another and then another.”

The money raised at the event will go directly to supporting their operations.

Mr Evans said that, if people were willing to donate, then “it’s always very helpful and well spent”.

“At the moment, we can fund our relief operations for about another month, which is

a shame because there is no one that gets their hands as dirty on the fire-ground as we do,” he said.

news Smoking linked to post-surgical complications

People who smoke cigarettes are at a significantly higher risk of post-surgical complications.

That’s according to a recent study led by the University of Newcastle (UoN), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), which shows that smokers are at a higher risk of experiencing heart and lung injuries, infections, and delayed or impaired wound healing.

The findings in the WHO Tobacco Knowledge Summary on Tobacco Postsurgical Outcomes provide a good incentive for smokers to quit.

It shows that quitting approximately four

weeks before surgery lowers the risk of postsurgical issues and yields better results six months post-operation.

For each additional week smoking was quit before surgery, a patient showed a 19% improved outcome after surgery.

The Director of Health Programs, Global Engagement and Partnerships at UoN, Associate Professor Edouard Tursan D’Espaignet, said this was attributed to improved blood flow throughout the body to essential organs.

“The healing process after surgery requires the body to use increased amounts of oxygen and nutrients,” he said.

“Smoking just one cigarette can reduce the body’s blood flow and ability to deliver necessary nutrients for this healing.

“Second-hand smoke and smokeless tobacco can also cause adverse outcomes after surgery.”

UoN’s Priority Research Centre for Health Behaviour, Associate Professor Luke Wolfenden, said that smoking distorts the immune system and the body’s response to wounds.

“A smoker’s body may take longer to heal a

wound, which can increase risk of infection at the wound,” he said.

“Overall, a patient’s heart, lungs and wound site are all at a greater risk when they smoke cigarettes.”

Associate Professor Tursan D'Espaignet added that post surgery complications could be a large burden for both the patient and health care provider.

“Some of these complications are preventable, or the risk can be minimised, if patients are effectively supported to quit smoking prior to surgery,” he said.

“Surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses, and health practitioners involved in non-emergency surgery should be working together to encourage the patient to try and give up tobacco use before any surgery.

“This would help reduce hospital readmission rates by minimising the risk of complications and infections in patients with a history of smoking.”

More than 120 new doctors have been welcomed to the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) as part of a group of over 1,000 interns that started work across the state.

Hunter New England (HNE) Health Chief Executive Michael DiRienzo said that these intern doctors “are a vital part of the professional team at the frontline of the health system”.

He said the interns would be employed across seven of the District’s hospitals, and within the HNE Mental Health team.

The NSW Government is investing $107 million in the internship program this year, following a 33% increase in intern positions since 2011.

A multi-million-dollar program is set to transform Wallsend.

The transformation will see significant streetscape upgrades, free Wi-Fi in the town centre and improved pedestrian and cycle routes in a bid to improve public amenity and the suburb’s resilience to floods.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said a major piece of this plan had recently hit a milestone, with the $3.3 million Tyrrell Street Bridge nearing completion.

The project involved the demolition of the former bridge to construct a two-span, two-lane concrete plank road bridge to allow more water to flow through the drains during storm events.

Cr Nelmes added that the bridge project was only one part of an extensive plan to revitalise the suburb.

“A long-term vision for the renewal of the Wallsend local centre is starting to take place following the adoption of the Wallsend Local Centre Public Domain and Traffic Plan,” she said.

“The plan aims to increase safety for pedestrians, cyclists and traffic, as well as improve amenity, accessibility and connectivity for the community.

“We’ll be having a conversation with the community about how the plan takes shape and what the ideal future for Wallsend looks like.

“Wallsend’s flood mitigation project and public domain plan form one long-term vision to allow the town centre to thrive as the population grows in our western suburbs.”

Further engagement with the Wallsend community will be undertaken in the first half of 2020.

Educational lesson on need for regular health checks Males who have neglected health checks will get the chance to undergo tests next week when an educational van roars into Lake Macquarie.

The Men’s Health Education Rural Van (mherv) project, formed by Rotary District 9670 and managed and directed by volunteers, has shown there is a real need to test regional and rural men for health issues such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and bad cholesterol.

During the past six months, the mherv project has visited many NSW country towns.

The results are staggering.

Of the 1,882 people tested, no less than 56% were referred to a GP to be assessed for identified issues, while more than 5% were advised

to see a GP immediately as they may be at serious risk due to high blood pressure.

Rob Woolley, the registered nurse engaged with the project, said he’d seen a mixed bunch of people who had produced results at the “danger end” of the scale.

“One bloke had blood pressure of 150/104 and a cholesterol reading of 6.8,” Mr Woolley said.

“He had an extensive and relevant family history but was not taking prescribed medication.

“I talked to him about the dangers of non-compliance – he seemed to understand and agreed to get a medical review as soon as possible.

“The next bloke had a blood pressure of 180/107, a blood sugar level of 7.8, and his cholesterol was

at 6.6.” According to the Heart Foundation, an optimal blood pressure level is a reading under 120/80 millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

Readings over 120/80mmHg and up to 139/89mmHg are in the normal to high range, while 140/90mmHg or above is generally classed as high. Health authorities also recommend that cholesterol levels should be no higher than 5.5

millimoles per litre (mmol).

The mherv project will be at Regatta Park, Toronto, on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 February from 10am to 4pm; and at the Morisset show on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February from 9am to 5pm. The free service is supported by the Rotary Clubs of Toronto, Toronto Sunrise, and Morisset.

Tim Sattler and Rod Jones are ready to “conquer the world”.

After winning reality television series The Amazing Race Australia last month, the couple feel they can take on anything.

“It sounds silly, but it has changed our lives,” Tim said.

“We’ve come back from the race so different to the people we were before we went on, it’s opened our eyes up to what we’re actually capable of.

“If we’ve done all those crazy challenges and come out of it on top, we can really tackle any challenge together.”

The pair grew up in Lake Macquarie and fell in love in their late 20s.

They decided to apply for The Amazing Race because of their love

for reality television.

“We just thought: ‘We’re both in the fittest stage of our lives and we both love reality tv, let’s do it,’” Rod said.

So, after becoming successful applicants, the newlyweds embarked on a 23-day adrenalinefilled race around the globe.

The contest was split into legs throughout several different countries and the teams were tasked with completing challenges, copious amounts of travel, and navigating their way through foreign lands.

They faced mental and physical obstacles almost no one could be prepared for. Over the course of the competition, participants endured eating tasks, puzzles, bungee jumping, and several other challenges.

Rod said the adrenaline he felt on the show was like nothing else he had ever experienced.

His favourite challenge was in Zimbabwe, where he was thrown face first into a gorge.

“It was the best rush ever,” he said.

Both Tim and Rod said winning the race was an indescribable feeling.

“You just can’t put it into words,” Tim said.

“The adrenaline rush, the feeling of overwhelming joy that is pumping through your veins – I wish I could bottle that few seconds of time up and just relive it over and over and over.

“It will stay in my mind and in my heart until the end of time.”

The duo were handed several additional tasks from other teams as they were perceived as a big threat.

Despite being U-turned, which allows any one team to force another to complete both detour tasks in a leg, they still came out on top, proving they were a strong team.

Competing for $250,000, the boys were determined to try their absolute hardest while challenging perspectives surrounding the LGBTQ+ community.

“We’re literally the first ever legally gay married couple on Australian reality television,” Tim said.

“So, to be on that show was monumental, and then to win it and hopefully change a lot of people’s perspectives on what gay people are, made us feel so happy and proud.”

Tim added that it was uplifting to think about the influence they could have on the nation’s youth.

Both he and Rod hope they inspired young people to go after whatever makes them happy in life.

In a true testament to their character, the winning couple immediately decided to donate their prize money to the families of the first two firefighters to lose their lives in Australia’s bushfire crisis.

“Unfortunately, the country is going through turmoil at the moment with all the bushfires and whatnot,” Rod said.

“When those first couple of firies lost their lives, we actually gave $5,000 to the widows.

“We were planning a trip to Bali and then it all started coming out and we were like: ‘It doesn’t feel right to be going on a holiday when there are families struggling so badly at the moment.’”

Tim and Rod have adventurous plans for the future, and they said they’d jump at the opportunity for another adrenaline-filled experience together.

In the coming months, they are hoping to travel to America to get remarried in Vegas and want to go on a second honeymoon at Disney World. Visit their Instagram profile @timandrod to stay up to date with their adventures.

The council’s Manager Environmental Regulation and Compliance, Derek Poulton, said illegal parking near school zones was a major contributor to road safety complaints in these areas.

“Parents disobeying parking signage is one of our biggest road safety issues around schools, and it puts our community, in particular, children, at risk,” he said.

“Often drivers can feel rushed during the busy school drop-off and pick-up periods and this can lead to inadvertently parking illegally.

is full, or if you need to park and there are no spaces available, look a little further along the road for a park and walk to pick up your children.”

Council Rangers will patrol school areas and issue fines for breaches and offences to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all school students, particularly younger children.

Things to look out for in school areas are no stopping and no parking areas, bus zones, mobility parking spaces, pedestrian and children’s crossings and kiss and ride (or drop off and pick up) zones.

The council is encouraging road users to allow enough time for school drop-offs and pick-ups, obey all parking signs, and to adhere to the speed limit within the school zone to avoid unnecessary risk and fines.

news Volunteers honoured at Australia Day ceremonies

City of Newcastle’s 2020 Citizen of the Year Michelle Faithfull with Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes during the citizenship ceremony at the Civic Theatre.

A dedicated and passionate community volunteer who has raised more than $180,000 for local charities over the past decade is City of Newcastle’s 2020 Citizen of the Year.

Bar Beach resident Michelle Faithfull coordinates the highly successful Hunter Homeless Connect Day, which links people experiencing homelessness, as well as those at risk, with essential services, helpful advice and other assistance.

The annual event has helped to connect thousands of people with accommodation and housing providers, health and wellbeing services, legal and financial assistance, employment, study, and general support.

Ms Faithfull also organises the annual all-women Divas on the Green golf day at Merewether

Golf Club for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) and Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF).

Her support for charities over the years includes raising more than $90,000 for the WRHS, almost $65,000 for the HBCF and $20,000 for the new Ronald McDonald House Family Room at John Hunter Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

This amazing effort followed her earlier volunteer work for children’s charities in the Hunter, with which she felt aligned following a personal tragedy.

“Losing my first-born daughter Jessica over 30 years ago at four months of age opened my eyes to the importance of community and supporting each other,” Ms Faithfull said.

In Maitland, local resident and tireless volunteer Wilma Lilley was announced as the city’s 2019 Citizen of the Year.

Since moving to the area 23 years ago, Ms Lilley has dedicated countless hours of her time to local groups and organisations, which provide vital support for children, vulnerable community members, older people, and people with a disability.

Ms Lilley has contributed to the Maitland community through her work with Lower Hunter Peer Support, Lower Hunter Temporary Care, Volunteers for Palliative Care, Benhome Auxiliary Board, Community Care and the Lions Club, to name a few.

Maitland Mayor Loretta Baker said Ms Lilley had demonstrated

her determination, enthusiasm and commitment over a long period of time.

“Her volunteer work with people from all demographics of Maitland is something to be admired and I have no doubt she has left a lasting impression on many people,” Cr Baker said.

Over in Lake Macquarie, Australia Day 2020 was one to remember for more than 87 new citizens hailing from 27 nations.

The citizenship ceremony at Lake Macquarie City Council’s Speers Point administration building included new Australians who have come from the likes of Bahrain, Denmark, Ethiopia, Germany, India, Jordan, Mauritius, South Korea, UAE, UK and Zambia.

“Becoming an Australian citizen is much more than just a formality for a lot of people,” Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said.

“It’s an acceptance of our way of

life and everything Australia has to offer.

“Welcoming people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe to Lake Macquarie enriches our community and makes us who we are today.

“We are proud of our diversity and of the welcoming nature of our city.”

In Cessnock, Hunter Hands of Hope President Melissa Gontier was named Citizen of the Year for her work in helping the town’s homeless and vulnerable.

Set up in December 2018, the organisation provides nutritional meals four nights a week, as well as breakfast and snack packs, and support or referrals to appropriate services. In Port Stephens, environmental advocate and founder of Plastic Free Port Stephens, Alicia Cameron, was also honoured as the area’s Citizen of the Year.

Regatta races into lake The annual Heaven Can Wait (HCW) Charity Sailing Regatta is back for its 14th year to raise funds for the Hunter Branch of Cancer Council NSW. Eighty boats are expected to take part in next month’s regatta, with specially designed courses and events for different types of racing.

Hosted by the Royal Motor Yacht Club (RMYC) Toronto, the event will feature a 24-hour endurance race which will test the stamina of some of the most experienced sailors from across the state.

RMYC Toronto Vice Commodore Mel Steiner said it was a challenging event.

“Even hardened [Sydney to] Hobart participants agree that this is a tough race – no sleep, lots of sail changes and the vagaries of the weather, make the 24-hour race a test of endurance,” Mr Steiner said.

In addition to this event, the regatta will include a Long One Lap Dash, a 12-hour race for yachts, multi hulls and trailer sailors, and a Short One Lap Dash.

Heaven Can Wait is set to be another action-packed event, while also raising funds for an important cause.

“The regatta has become a hugely popular event on the sailing calendar but it’s also a great spectacle for those watching from the shore, particularly the start, which, with the right wind conditions, results in a lot of colour on display as boats hoist their spinnakers for the run to, or from, Speers Point” Mr Steiner added.

sport Masterful contingent ready for national championships Four females will lead the charge in their respective age groups at the annual Masters Swimming National Championships.

The Raymond Terrace Masters contingent consists of Jan Finn, Lesley Potter, Cat Boorer and Brinlei Baxter, who range in age from 27 to 86 years.

The squad, which is coached

by Michael Abel, will compete in the championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from 15 to 18 April.

Experienced members Jan and Lesley are set to build on their impressive results from the 2019 edition.

Jan won a gold medal in the 200m backstroke, as well as silver in the 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle, in the 85 to 89 age group, while

Lesley claimed bronze in the 400m and 100m freestyle in the 50 to 54 category.

Two of the newest members to national swimming, Cat and Brinlei, will make their debuts in the 35 to 39 and 25 to 29 age groups respectively.

Cat previously focused on open water and ocean swims, while Brinlei holds the fastest national short course times for her age in the 200m and 800m freestyle, as well as the 200m backstroke.

Team spokesperson Lesley says preparing for the nationals requires hard work and dedication.

“There is the 5am wake-up, then off to a one-and-a-half-hour intense training session and a full day at work, followed by the afternoon workouts,” she says.

After swimming at club level until she was 17, Lesley turned her attention to other interests but finally made a return to the sport two decades later.

She says Masters Swimming is about promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle in a fun and supportive way.

“I knew of Masters Swimming

but always thought it was for old people,” she says.

“I soon realised I had the wrong perception and it is so much more than that – it is a community filled with like-minded people who have become close friends and family.

“It doesn’t matter if you are a social or competitive swimmer, this community is accepting, respectful, supportive and encouraging.”

Play puts Australia Day under microscope Playwright Jonathan Biggins has used his experiences as a real-life Australia Day ambassador to put our prejudices and peccadilloes under the microscope in his hilarious play Australia Day. Quinoa pilaf stuffed white onions Serves 4 as a side Gluten free; Vegetarian 4 medium white onions, peeled and cut in half 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1/2 (80g) red capsicum, seeds removed, diced 2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley 3/4 cup quinoa 2 cups (500ml) vegetables stock 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 100g feta 2 tablespoon pinenuts, toasted 2 tablespoons pomegranate seeds Extra herbs for garnish Take each white onion half and trim a small portion from the base so you can push the inner layers through and out of the onion, leaving about 3 layers to create the onion cup to hold the pilaf. Do this with each white onion and set aside

about 120g of white onion to dice for the pilaf. Set the rest of the inner white onion pieces aside to use in another recipe or pop in the freezer and store for when you need next. Add finely chopped white onion, extra virgin olive oil, capsicum and herbs to a small saucepan, place on medium heat and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

Add quinoa, 1 cup (250ml) vegetable stock and cinnamon to pan, stir, cover to bring to boil then reduce heat to simmer and cook for 10-12 minutes, the pilaf at this stage will still be relatively loose in nature but the quinoa should be cooked. Heat oven to 180C, and pour the remaining 1 cup (250ml) vegetable stock into a shallow baking dish.

Arrange white onion cups around the dish so they are snug, then fill each halfway with the pilaf. Sprinkle about half the feta in each cup and repeat finishing with the feta on top. Cover with foil then place in oven to cook for 20 minutes, the stock from the base of the dish will steam the onion cups in this time. Remove the foil, change oven to grill and pop back under to make a little more golden on top for 5-6 minutes.

Steamed fish with red onions, pesto, fennel, and olives Serves 2 Gluten free; Dairy Free (opt) 1 small bulb fennel, trimmed and cut into 6 pieces 2x 160g pieces salmon 150g cherry tomatoes, halved 1/4 cup mixed olives 1 small (120g) red onion, peeled and cut into sixths Extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons dairy free (opt) pesto Sea salt and black pepper To serve: pumpkin mash if desired and rocket salad Heat oven to 200C. Lay two large pieces of baking paper on a tray to lay ingredients into as the steaming parcel. Start with the fennel pieces to create the base, then add salmon, arrange cherry tomatoes 20

and olives around the fish, top with red onion pieces, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, and season with sea salt and black pepper. Wrap the ends in and fold over to create a parcel and place in oven to bake for 20 minutes. Once cooked transfer to plate with a dollop of pumpkin mash if desired, drizzle pesto around the edges, garnish with herbs or the tops of the fennel if handy and serve.

Band swings into 20 years Bill Bolton was 48 years old when he first learnt to play the trumpet and, almost three decades later, he is still playing.

It all started because of an argument with one of his children.

“My children were in the West Lake Macquarie Band and I had an argument with one of them because he left the band and I said: ‘If you rejoin the band, I’ll join too,’” he said.

“So, I asked the conductor at the time what instrument I could play.

“I was 48 and a half when I started learning the trumpet, and now I also play the tuba and a little bit of the trombone.”

While playing with the West Lake Macquarie Band, Bill started the Blackalls Swing Band.

Two decades on, the band is stronger than ever.

It comprises of about 20 members, with the oldest, at 89 years old, playing the trumpet and harmonica.

They play classic swing music using an array of instruments.

“We’ve got a drummer, a singer, a bass guitarist, guitarists, a banjo player, four or five trumpets, two euphoniums, four saxophones and

a trombone, if I ever play it,” Bill said.

He added the band plays for the love of it – to them it’s not a job.

“We’re doing something that’s good for the audience and it’s good for us,” he said.

“Hopefully we’ll live longer, and they’ll be happy.”

While the band usually performs at nursing homes, Bill said they’d play for almost anyone who would like them to.

“We play for anyone who wants it, they just have to call up,” he said.

One of his favourite songs to play is Blueberry Hill but he said “it’s not for everyone” and that the crowd favourite is usually Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.

The band constantly welcomes new members; the only thing they need is their own instrument and a love of swing music.

Bill adds that “it’s easier if you can read music”.

Gardening governed by common sense I often think gardening is somewhat governed by common sense.

Sometimes the correct answer escapes horticulturists but, although I’m often bombarded with a multitude of questions, here are the answers to the most common.

Watering Very much asked under the present water restrictions, which include only watering every second day for 15 minutes using a trigger.

This timeframe is very restrictive, and I would suggest concentrating on new planting and precious plants and abandon the lawn as it is virtually impossible to water an average garden in 15 minutes. Lawns recover quickly after rain, whereas container grown plants will be suffering. I am fi nding that enthusiastic plant growers are saving water in the home as the shower runs but do be careful not to use grey water on vegetables. Mulch gardens with sugar cane and pots with peat moss.

Which fertiliser?

House plants are relatively simple – use a slow release fertiliser every three months but, more importantly, apply Green Flourish during the growing season in water each week. Shrubs and trees are a little more complex. If unsure, use a fertiliser with a neutral pH. Natives require blood and bone. Acid-loving plants such as camellias and gardenias need cow manure, whilst poultry manure is ideal for citrus and roses.

Pests and diseases If the pest is visible, use a contact spray such as pyrethrum or Malathon. It is always wise to head off to a nursery with a sample of the damaged plant, plus a photo.

What to plant where?

Here is where common sense rules – at point of sale, if a plant is displayed in a shady spot, you wouldn’t take it home and plant it in the full sun.

Hardy plants should be bought if shown in the full sun. But (and this is a big but) always check with a reliable retailer where the plant will be suitable to grow.

Repotting Roots extending beneath the pot isn’t always a signal to repot. If a plant is happy and healthy, leave well enough alone. Discoloured leaves and poor growth are good indicators, but never repot in winter.

When to prune After flowering is usually safe but abstain during colder months as new shoots can be burnt by the cold. Likewise, on a hot day, if plants have been burnt during summer, don’t prune. Leave that damaged growth as it offers a little protection for new growth underneath.

When to plant The obvious answer is spring, but it can mean diligent watering. Autumn planting doesn’t allow as much growth, but the milder weather allows the plant time to adjust to its new home.

Golden years shine bright No longer dreaming of an early retirement, Latitude One residents, Lynne and Steve, downsized in their early 60s to enjoy their golden years sooner than planned.

With past careers as an executive assistant and bank manager, Lynne and Steve’s life in Sydney was a busy one.

As they hit their early 60s they decided to trade it all in for an early retirement, to downsize their home, unlock more capital for their superannuation and fund their retirement plans.

“We had the ‘McMansion’ with the double story home, pool, spa, big yard and gardens to maintain,” Lynne said.

“We are excited about the clubhouse opening, it’s beautiful.

“Our favourite part about the clubhouse is the Mix and Mingle events, the resort swimming pool and the activities in the clubhouse.

“The craft room operates on a Tuesday with knitting in the morning and cards in the afternoon.

“On a Wednesday I can head to the Sterling Lounge for a massage and facial with the visiting beautician.

“Every Friday we socialise in the lounge and the special events, like New Year’s Eve, were such a great night.

When comparing their past busy life to what it is now after downsizing, they agree it’s still busy but it feels like they’re living on a holiday.

“On a Sunday we walk over to the jetty and we watch the model yacht club, sitting beside Lake Latitude in the warm morning sun.

“After 12 months living at Latitude One it feels like home to us and when we come back from visiting Sydney, we’re coming home,” Lynne said.

Adding to their new gold class lifestyle is Latitude One’s multi-million dollar resort clubhouse which was soft-launched to residents in late-2019.

“We’ve always been healthy and fit people and Latitude One meant we could maintain our healthy lifestyle using the pool and the gym while also strengthening our social networks.

Final preparations for the clubhouse’s official opening celebrations are now falling into place and residents are looking forward to the grand opening public event on Saturday 1 February.

“We recommend land lease living to all our friends, and in fact we have referred three new residents to Latitude One already, we love it that much,” Lynne exclaims.
