This week... From the editor Australia Day often sparks a heated discussion about cultural identity, history and what it means to be Australian. To many within our Indigenous community, it’s known as ‘Invasion Day’ or ‘Day of Mourning’ to mark the date when Captain Arthur Phillip took formal possession of the colony of NSW and raised the British flag for the first time. For Indigenous people, there is little to celebrate after the loss of their sovereign rights to their land, loss of family, and loss of the right to practice their culture. However, for others, it’s a chance to welcome new citizens and honour people who’ve done great work within the community. Australia Day, in my view, is also an opportunity to reflect and recommit to making Australia an even better place. Last year, I went to the beach with a few friends for a swim and lunch and, in 2018, I was in San Antonio, Texas, with two old friends to watch an NBA basketball game. This time, I plan to attend one of the ceremonies within the region, possibly alongside a couple of friends once again. news Community works together to win the war on waste Social media is helping Lake Macquarie win the war against waste. In in its fifth year, Redhead to Blacksmiths Beach. Let’s keep it clean. has organised its biggest clean up yet. The post-Christmas/Australia Day beach clean-up and barbecue, marked for Saturday 1 February, will scour the beach and sand dunes for rubbish left by visitors in a bid to keep them clean. Wayne “Franko” Franklin created the page after finding litter all over the beaches. “I was down here with friends and there was a heap of rubbish all around where we were set up, so I decided to go home and start the page,” he says. “I actually thought it would only

reach a few hundred people but, over the five years, we’re now up to over 9,500. “I thought: ‘Mate, something’s gotta be done about this.’ “It’s nowhere near as bad as what it was now. “We’ve definitely won the war there.” Franko believes his initiative is so successful because of the education it provides – he wants to inspire people to have “pride in our backyard”. “We’re over here nearly every day, myself and my family, and we notice that there is nowhere near as much rubbish as what there was,” he says. “We see families set up and they’ve got their kids running around with bags picking up cans

and small plastics and stuff like that, so the education has worked a treat.” The Belmont Wetlands State Park is the location of the clean-up and, while the beach area is only accessible by four-wheel drives (4wd), Franko still encourages people without this type of vehicle to help out. He asks everyone to meet at the compound by the 4wd track, just off Kalaroo Road, Redhead, at 8am. At 8.30am, there will be a safety

brief and then Franko will place the volunteers in vehicles and the cleanup will begin. In order to reward volunteers, several businesses have come on board this year to provide equipment, car wash vouchers, food for the barbecue, and other items. Go to the Redhead to Blacksmiths Beach. news Volunteers lend a hand after widespread devastation Newcastle’s Kim Watt couldn’t scroll past the countless stories on the bushfires anymore – she had to do something to help. The 32-year-old called the NSW Rural Fire Service in a bid to offer support. However, after being told it would take a few months to process her application, she was directed to a charity called Blaze Aid instead. The volunteer-based organisation works with rural families and individuals to rebuild fences and structures that have been damaged or destroyed from natural disasters such as fires and floods. Volunteers also strive to help rebuild broken communities through lifting the spirits of people who have suffered devastating losses.

Ms Watt spent two weeks at a camp in Wingham, on the Mid North Coast, as volunteers worked on farmers’ fences, completed kitchen work, cleaned, and undertook other maintenance jobs. She said Blaze Aid was suitable for all ages, skills, fitness levels, and abilities. “There are camps opening up all over the place – they just have to wait for the fires to stop burning before they set up a new one,” she said. “A lot of retirees were helping out, but there is a need for younger people. “Some of the work is physical, but most of it is fairly easy.” Ms Watt said some farmers were still in a state of shock when she arrived at the camp, while others had shown signs of Post-Traumatic

Stress Disorder (PTSD) after staying to save their properties. “Most of them didn’t know where to start – some had hundreds of thousands of hectares that needed fencing,” she said. “With Blaze Aid, you’re not emotionally attached to the land so you can look at it more logically. “I was very sad to leave, the job is not done.

“There’s still about 400 farms that need assistance and they are coming in every day asking for help. “I had to go back to work, but I’ll definitely head back out there.” There are other camps set up in NSW, including Macksville and Willawarrin. New penalties have been introduced for NSW motorists caught tossing a lit cigarette from their vehicle. Under the changes, which came into effect last week, motorists will be penalised five demerit points, which doubles to 10 plus a fine of up to $11,000 if the offence is committed during a total fire ban. Penalties will also apply to passengers caught tossing a lit cigarette on or near the roadway. They will be fined $660, with this penalty to double during total fire bans. Wallsend State MP Sonia Hornery called on motorists to think about their actions and urged witnesses to report people who did the wrong thing. “We have all seen the devastation caused by the

bushfires over the last few months and hopefully these tough new penalties will make people think twice,” she said. “Tossing a lit cigarette from a car is reckless behaviour and puts the safety of our community at risk. “Motorists need to be vigilant and make sure they also report anyone who they see toss a cigarette from a vehicle, whether it be the passenger or the driver. “I hope this move makes people think very carefully about the consequences of their actions next time they go to discard a lit cigarette.” Contact the NSW Rural Fire Service hotline on 1800 679 737 to make a report or go to rfs. nsw.gov.au/fire-information/ cigarette-form for more information.

news Summit to discuss future of coal-fired power stations Hunter Community Environment Centre Coordinator Jo Lynch believes the “future is bright” for energy in Australia. Experts from across the country will gather at a Power and Pollution: National Community Summit in Lake Macquarie on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February. The summit has been organised because of growing concerns around the future of coal-fired power stations. Communities and electricity consumers are uncertain about the economic, environmental, and social challenges associated with the change unfolding across the industry. “The reason for the summit happening now is that coal-fired power stations in Australia are

all set to close within the next two decades and there is a lack of federal and state planning about what will happen when they do close,” Ms Lynch says. “[This is] not only in respect to energy and the next form of energy generation. “What we are particularly focused on, and what these communities have in common, is the environment rehabilitation and what will happen to the workforce, as well as what other industries might be set up to replace or use the coal ash and land those power stations were on.” Ms Lynch believes the future of Australia’s energy production will involve a mix of renewable energies, including solar and wind power initiatives.

She says that there seems to be a consensus and feel of excitement around renewables, but the focus now is on what needs to happen when power stations shut down. “What we’re focusing on is, when coal fired power stations do close down, making sure that it is done in a way that communities are happy with,” she says.

A public memorial will celebrate the life of prominent journalist, Pink Meets Teal founder and 2019 Newcastle Citizen of the Year Jill Emberson. Carers commitment to Australian wildlife

Audrey Koosmen dedicates her life to helping animals. In her role as President of Hunter Wildlife Rescue, she’s seen Australia’s wildlife at its worst. “We’ve got several hundred animals in care at the moment,” she says. “The majority of them are coming in because of the drought; they’re starving and dehydrated.” Volunteer carers across the Hunter are devoting their time to rehabilitating these animals. Flying foxes, echidnas and kangaroos are just three of the species currently in care. On Monday, Hunter Wildlife Rescue took part in a “black walk” in the Wollombi area and, during the walk, volunteers searched for any remaining wildlife that had been caught by a bushfire. Ms Koosmen was relieved to find no hurt animals.

“We found two lovely, healthy koalas,” she says. “It was nice to see no burnt, dead or injured animals. “We put food and water out for any animals who remain in the area.” Ms Koosmen has been rescuing and rehabilitating “our beloved wildlife” for 54 years. “My parents cared for wildlife when we lived on a farm and I was introduced to fauna early in my life,” she says. “We all had a passion for our wildlife and the conservation of its wild habitat.” She says Hunter Wildlife Rescue is incredibly grateful for the donations they’ve already received. “It’s overwhelming, we’re chocka-block full of donations,” she says. While volunteers appreciate the contributions, currently they are unable to accept anymore.

Ms Koosmen asks people, if they can, to donate much-needed funds to help maintain their care instead. She adds the group is constantly looking for more volunteers and members. “You can become a rescuer, phone operator, transporter or rehabilitator,” she says, “There are quite a lot of jobs you can do.” If you find an injured animal, call the Hunter Wildlife Rescue’s emergency line on 0418 628 483 – the operator will be able to give advice and organise someone to collect the animal. Ms Koosmen advised that you should not touch any snakes, bats or flying foxes and where possible mark the animal’s location so they are easier to find. news Push to promote healthy screen time Time spent outdoors could be the key to helping children’s eye health. New research has suggested that children in Lake Macquarie spend more than double the recommended time indoors on screens. Optometrist Louie Loizou is raising awareness of the issue as the data shows, on average, children in the area use electronic devices, such as tablets and laptops, for upwards of four hours a day. The findings, which are the result of a research project from Specsavers, aim to improve parents and children’s understanding of the effects of screen use, as well as the impacts on eye health. “I understand how strong the pull of digital screens is for children and I also know that the way children learn, and play, is drastically changing as technology becomes increasingly incorporated into everyday life,” Mr Loizou says. “The biggest message I would like to get across to parents is to make sure their children spend time outside playing and, if parents are worried about the impacts of screen time on

their child’s eye health, the best thing to do is to book in to see an optometrist for an eye test. “Staring at screens and being indoors for extended periods of time can increase the risk of myopia or becoming short-sighted. “This means the eyes focus well only on close objects, while more distant objects appear blurred. “Children are more at risk of this, as their eyes are still developing.” Mr Loizou explains that when it comes to eye health, it’s the near vision work without natural light that is bad for your eyes. He warns that too much of this, including time spent on screens, doing homework and reading, can have a negative effect on the eye. Excessive screen time can also cause other health risks, with the study showing that parents are concerned the time their child spends inactive is hindering their ability to develop gross motor skills, as well as disrupting their sleep patterns and negatively impacting their mental health. Cancer warrior dives into harbour challenge

Martine Paterson will compete in the Newcastle Harbour Swim on Sunday.

Martine Paterson wants to make a splash in what may be her “last hurrah” at the iconic Newcastle Harbour Swim this Australia Day. The 44-year-old, a former morning radio presenter of Lake Mac Life with Martine and The Saturday Sports Edition on FM97.3, was diagnosed with a second bout of breast cancer last year. Despite already undergoing a partial mastectomy and lymph node clearance, as well as other treatment, Martine is determined to show there’s “life after a cancer diagnosis” and plans to raise money and awareness of the illness. “The ‘Big C’ – a lot of people are scared of that,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “I’m still active; I’m a mother with five kids and I’m still young and still out working. “You can still have a life even

though you’ve got a cancer diagnosis.” Two decades ago, Martine responded to her first diagnosis with the same positive approach. She helped form Dragons Abreast, a group of adventurous women and men, many of whom have been diagnosed with breast cancer, which takes up the challenge of paddling a Dragon Boat as part of the Newcastle Hunter Dragon Boat Club. Martine now plans to be a guest speaker at the club’s 20-year celebrations next month. She says money raised from the harbour swim on Sunday 26 January will go towards registration costs for the paddling team’s entry into a Chinese New Year event in Sydney. “I co-founded Dragons Abreast with my first diagnosis of breast

cancer at the age of just 24 years old and, since it is the 20-year celebrations for Dragons Abreast and myself – of sorts – I thought this would be a fitting charity,” she says. “I am considering further surgery and treatment options, which may limit my physical capability for the future, so this is most likely the last time I will swim.” The Newcastle Harbour Swim will feature a single crossing of the harbour, which is 700 metres, from 10am, while a double crossing of 1,400 metres starts at 11am. cover story The race for Olympic qualification For Poppy Starr Olsen, skateboarding gives her a “rush all the time”. The Olympic hopeful is set to represent Australia on the global stage at the 2020 Summer Games as she sits fourth in the world in the battle for qualification. The top 20 highest-scoring skateboarders will qualify and, while Olsen still has a couple of competitions to go, she boasts more than 55,000 points over competitors ranked outside the top 20. “My ultimate goal would be to go to this Olympics,” Poppy tells Newcastle Weekly. “It would be amazing to see how it is – it’s going to be a really interesting new experience for everyone and, just to be able to keep skating for as long as I can, is the main one I think, and having fun along the way,” she says. “I love my country, I love everything about it, so I am really excited to see if I get that opportunity. “I think it will be a really cool experience.” If she qualifies for Tokyo, Poppy will compete in the Women’s Park competition in the first-year

skateboarding features as a sport. This event takes place in a hollowed-out course, which includes a complex set of twists and turns. “Imagine an empty swimming pool spread out with lots more obstacles,” Poppy says. “You are judged on speed, the height of your airs coming out of the coping, which is the top part, and then we’ve got your style, difficulty of tricks and the use of the park. “There are lots of different factors that are involved.” Poppy has been skating since she was eight years old and, since then, it has become one of the most important parts of her life. “It’s like an outlet and it’s really freeing,” she says. “You can express yourself in a lot of different ways; it just gives you a rush all the time. “It is one of the biggest parts, if not the biggest part of my life.” She won her first competition when she was nine, became an Australian aged champion at 11, and won Bronze at the 2017 X Games.

Rathmines Wangi Singers seek more like-minded members The Rathmines Wangi Singers (RWS) is a group of retired and semi-retired men (plus Lyndel, a female accompanist) who volunteer their time visiting nursing homes, retirement villages and a range of community groups. The RWS sings for about an hour and does around 50 shows a year as well as rehearsing on a Monday morning. The group is looking for some like-minded men, who enjoy singing, to join them – people who do not take themselves too seriously and are prepared to have fun and to interact with audiences. In a blender, combine the basil leaves, pine nuts, lemon juice, olive oil, cheese and onion and puree to blend. Transfer to a bowl.

Prep: 20 mins Cook: 5 mins 1 bunch fresh basil, leaves picked 1/2 cup pine nuts 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1/3 cup extra- virgin olive oil or avocado oil 2 ounces (56.70 g) firm aged cheese, grated 1/2 onion, peeled 1 pound (453.59 g) sea scallops 1 Tbsp salted butter

Rinse the scallops in warm water and pat them dry thoroughly with a paper towel. This helps them sear rather than steam. In a large cast-iron skillet, heat the butter over medium-high heat. Swirl the butter evenly in the pan. Carefully arrange the scallops in the skillet so one of their flat surfaces is directly touching the pan. Sear for 1 1/2 minutes. Carefully flip the scallops and cook the other side for 1 1/2 more minutes. They should have a golden crust and be translucent in the centre. Drain the scallops in a sieve, then transfer them to the pesto bowl. Toss to coat the scallops well, then serve.

Barre reaps benefits for the elderly A new program will help to keep an ageing population active, strengthen muscles and combat loneliness during the NSW Seniors Festival. Dance 4 Wellbeing provides inclusive dance and movement programs for mature-aged adults and people living with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Its latest class, Barre and Move, is a one-hour movement lesson that focuses on moving different parts of the body through lowlevel resistance exercise. Dance 4 Wellbeing Founder Jessica Conneely said there would be many benefits to the class, such as improving balance, strength and gait. “Dance and movement bring a little more fun to mundane exercise,” she said. “Gentle movements are sequenced with simple coordination of the body to music.

“You are supported by holding onto the barre as you move, and it is fun as we keep time with music and rhythm. “Plus, there is a great social aspect– we are ticking all the boxes.” Ms Conneely said dance also improved posture, agility, stamina, and flexibility, all while stimulating mental activity that sparked creativity and connected an individual’s mind to their body. “A lot of research in America, Europe and the UK has recommended this type of activity,” Ms Conneely said. “I have modelled my classes between a falls prevention program and healthy movement principles, and it’s all to music. “The action of putting movements together, like dance, is beneficial for cognitive function.” The Barre and Move class was supported by the Awesome

Waratahs to play in region Rugby Union fans from across the Hunter are the big winners, with the NSW Waratahs coming back to McDonald Jones Stadium for a one-off clash against Super Rugby powerhouse the Auckland Blues on Saturday 8 February. Venues NSW has combined with the City of Newcastle and the NSW Waratahs to bring the team back to the region following their history-making

first-ever Super Rugby match in Newcastle against the Sunwolves of Japan in March last year. The much-anticipated clash against the Blues has the potential to be a financial boon for the wider Hunter Region, with direct flights from Auckland to Newcastle providing easy access for New Zealand rugby fans. Camellias and azaleas should be fertilised after flowering using a slow release for potted plants. Ground grown camellias should be fed with cow manure. New growth and buds on roses will be prone to aphid attack – keep this under control with Pyrethrum or Malathon. Hibiscus developing new growth can develop yellow leaves and should be fertilised with cow manure. Once spring bulbs finish blooming, do not cut off the foliage as it

I love getting outdoors and I am passionate about cycling, which I took up in Melbourne in the ‘70s and pursued in Canberra, for getting around and leisure. I cycle on Sundays with the Toronto ‘Double Take’ group. I kayak in our beautiful lake, walk, and play golf occasionally.

I’ve always been interested in finding a good deal. For a couple of years, I ‘worked’ for a web-based travel company as a ‘bloodhound’, finding flight deals and learnt useful tricks. I encourage people to ‘shop around’, be inquisitive, do their research, and question.

TRAVEL I travelled through Asia and Australia for work. Chris and I enjoy different cultures and we have been fortunate to travel to many places, including New Zealand, USA, Canada, Asia, Europe, Zambia and Armenia. We plan to travel more within Australia.

LAKE MACQUARIE-BASED VOLUNTEER

Nico was born of Armenian parents and lived in Indonesia before emigrating to Australia when he was seven. He worked for 25 years as a scientist in environmental forestry at CSIRO in Canberra, where he and his wife, Chris, raised their two children. In 2011, he and Chris moved to Carey Bay. Nico quickly became involved with the Lake Macquarie U3A, first as treasurer and then president. He was, until recently, Chair of the Toronto Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group (TASNG). Through TASNG, he has advocated for sensitive residential development, improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, and reuse and recycling. He is a local Landcare volunteer and a member of an Active Transport Advisory Group, as well the Toronto Foreshore Protection Group, where he has sought to protect the small foreshore area from inappropriate commercial development. 54

LIFELONG LEARNING I probably spend too much time in front of my computer! I enjoy research, further learning and writing. The U3A provided an opportunity to delve into philosophy, ancient history and mind games. I maintain an interest in topics related to environment and revegetation.

HOME AND COMMUNITY I enjoy the garden, making things from discarded materials and just pottering around. We have great neighbours, who help each other, and local volunteers, with whom I work on community building projects. We love to share time with family and friends at our home.
