This week... From the editor You may think of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as “spoilt brats”, joining parts of the British press, which patronisingly labelled them so. Alternatively, some might believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the right decision to turn their back on the British royal family. Others, no doubt, couldn’t care less. Whatever your take is on the news out of the Mother Country, the amount of vitriol being levelled at Harry and Meghan, particularly by many within the media, is very ordinary. It’s no coincidence that the media’s angry response came after the couple had been highly critical of the relentless intrusion into their personal lives. Benefitting from taxpayer-funded dollars means the press and public feel a strong sense of ownership of the royals but bullying and harassment should never be acceptable. It’s also surprising that this same level of disgust wasn’t unleashed on Prince Andrew who, for years, was reportedly close friends with billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Closer to home, and this week’s cover features a special guest for Maitland’s upcoming Australia Day ceremony. news Historic gun set to fire at fort after almost a century Visitors to Fort Scratchley will be treated to a “hefty bang” as a historic gun is fired for the first time in almost 100 years. The 80-pound rifle gun muzzle loader will be shot three times on Australia Day – Sunday 26 January – along with six other guns. Its restoration has been a lengthy process, with planning estimated to have begun 12 to 13 years ago. Fort Scratchley Historical Society Guide and Volunteer Rick Carter says that people often mistake the gun for a cannon. “Funnily enough, though, it did start out as a cannon,” he says. “A 68-pound cannon, so if you can think of a soccer ball or netball made of solid metal, that’s roughly the size of the ball it would have

fired.” On Australia Day, the gun will fire 400-grams of black powder and the gun crew will wear period uniform. The weapon is one of four on the site. They were moved in 1882, with the gun the only one to be placed aboveground. “This one is out here because it had a little extra duty – maintaining the correct protocols for ships leaving port and making sure they had paid their harbour fees before they were allowed to leave,” Mr Carter says. He adds that if ships left without paying, three shots were fired. One was a warning, with the second and third firings allowed to get closer to the vessel. The upcoming event is set to put

the fort’s history on show, and Mr Carter believes it is important to understand and maintain its story. “You can’t separate [the fort’s history] from the history of Newcastle and, of course, the current main armament that was installed in 1911 are the only large land-based guns in Australia to fire against a naval target when they fired against the Japanese submarine in 1942, so they still have

that distinction,” Mr Carter says. In addition to the gun firings, a display of World War II vehicles, tours of the grounds, reenactments, a sausage sizzle and pipe band will also be on offer. news App provides better access People living with a disability or anyone who needs accessibility information can now find hundreds of businesses and organisations on a Better Access Map. The smartphone app and website take the guesswork out of going out by providing easy to use information on physical, hearing, visual and sensory access needs. The feedback from users of the app has been overwhelmingly positive, and the initiative has already contributed to a growing awareness of accessibility needs in the business community. Trained assessors visit each listed venue and collect over 200 pieces of information, including details about entry, toilet facilities, lighting levels and more. David Aveyard, who has lived with a visual impairment since he was 13, says the app has had a huge

impact on his life. “It makes it so much easier because there are not a lot of accessible apps available,” he says. “It tells you how to enter the place and gives you details about its accessibility. You look it up before you go and you go: ‘Oh that’s great’ because it tells you where things are and it gives you directions. “It’s fantastic to be able to do that – I use it every day.” Mr Aveyard adds that it gives you a lot more confidence because of how detailed it is. “The app, I reckon, is for anybody, it makes it easy to get around and it’s really accessible,” he says. Project plans to revive mall A new development is set to breathe life into the city centre as Newcastle’s revitalisation marks another milestone. Work began on Monday on a $700 million residential and retail development in Hunter Street Mall, which launched the second stage of the East End development.

Bounded by Hunter, Wolfe, King and Thorn streets, the multistorey development will feature 116 residential apartments atop retail and commercial spaces. Similar to the preservation work on the former David Jones building, which marked stage one, Iris Capital plans to retain the facades of the

former Lyrique Theatre, Masonic Hall, Royal Exchange Hotel and Soul Pattinson Chemist buildings. City of Newcastle has welcomed the development. “The decision to start work on the second stage of the development before stage one is complete shows the confidence Iris has in the Newcastle market and will minimise overall disruption to Hunter Street Mall traders,” Newcastle Deputy Lord Mayor, Declan Clausen, said. “Stages one and two of the East End development are game changers as they account for more than half of the Hunter Street Mall.” He added that the development provided hope to mall traders, who have struggled since the rise of Westfield Kotara and Charlestown Square. The project will also trigger capital works that are part of The Hunter Street Newcastle East End Stage One Streetscape Plan. Under the council-approved blueprint, bluestone footpaths,

cobblestone laneways and new outdoor eating and retail opportunities will help re-invigorate two blocks bound by Perkins, Newcomen, King and Scott streets. The plan, which includes a separated two-way cycleway, new furnishings, street plantings and street art, will revive the former commercial centre as a tourism, residential and hospitality hub. “The streetscape plan is a very exciting plan for Newcastle and has been brought forward to occur at the same time as the Iris development,” City of Newcastle Director of Infrastructure & Property, Ken Liddell, said. “It supports the much-needed growth of residential development, boutique retail, hospitality and tourism in Newcastle.” The plan will see a 40km/h speed limit for westbound motorists, with parking retained along Hunter Street’s northern side. - Elizabeth Symington

Level two restrictions will start in the Lower Hunter this Monday 20 January as water storages drop to their lowest levels in almost 40 years. Under the restrictions, outdoor watering is limited to 15 minutes every second day, vehicles and buildings can only be washed with a bucket, and showers are limited to four minutes. All hoses must have a trigger nozzle, sprinklers cannot be used and dripping taps and leaking toilets must be repaired as soon as possible. Basic exclusions to these restrictions include recycled water, greywater, rainwater collected in tanks or private dams, bore water and water used for firefighting, testing and related activities. Hunter Water will monitor the region throughout the water

restrictions period. The team has investigated more than 700 suspected breaches so far and issued one warning, along with more than 1,000 exemptions and 456 pool permits. “Our team of Community Water Officers will maintain a visible presence in the region to help spread the importance of the restrictions and conservation in reducing demand on our drinking water supplies,” Executive Manager, Customer Strategy and Retail, Victor Prasad, said. “Our community has responded incredibly well since the start of water restrictions, reducing their usage by 17% compared to what we expected in these weather conditions.” Visit hunterwater.com.au/ restrictions for more information. - Elizabeth Symington

news Concern over Medicare Shortland Federal MP Pat Conroy has urged the government to reconsider Medicare changes that are causing some doctors to stop bulk-billing patients. From 1 January, the rural classification system used to determine eligibility for Bulk Billing Incentives changed. The incentives encourage medical practitioners to provide bulk-billed services to vulnerable patient groups, such as people with concession cards and children under 16 in rural and remote areas. Under the changes, doctors who are not in very remote or rural areas are being paid $6.30 via Medicare to bulk-bill a patient, down from $9.50 previously. This has led to some Hunterbased GPs, including in Swansea and Belmont, to announce they can no longer afford to bulk-bill some

patients for certain procedures. “Several people have come to me very concerned that they will no longer be able to afford to go to the doctor because they will not be bulk-billed,” Mr Conroy said. “These changes were designed to benefit rural and remote communities, but they are actually hurting communities, such as ours, with high rates of disadvantage and unemployment. “People who are pensioners should not need to count their pennies to see if they can go to the doctor.” Mr Conroy called on Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, to look at the “unintended consequences of the change” and consider the impact on vulnerable people in disadvantaged communities. Deng Adut was trained to be a killer. Born into a peaceful village on the banks of the River Nile, in modern-day South Sudan, he soon had to contend with the outbreak of war. As one of many children conscripted to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, Deng was forced to march for 33 days to Ethiopia and undertook military training. At the age of 11, he was handed an AK-47 rifle and made to fight on the front lines. “My mission was to kill people – I didn’t have any remorse if anyone from the North of Sudan caught my bullet,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “When I got the AK-47, I finally believed I was liberated and would go on to liberate my family and country. “To hold that [rifle] in your hand

and know your enemy, I couldn’t just let it go. I slept with it and took care of it – it solved all of my problems. “So, that was delusions – I was trained to believe the AK-47 was my mother and father and that I should never think of them as being at home or alive. “When you go through a training regime and have a gun in your hand, you believe no-one is going to abuse or torture you unless they take the gun away.” Deng spent years in the army, but a chance meeting with his brother, John Mac, changed both of their lives. A born leader, John arranged to smuggle Deng out of Sudan, risking his life in doing so. Deng hid in a truck while it passed through several heavilyarmed checkpoints to Kenya. Continued on page 15

and have access to relevant services.” In response to the bushfires, trained Red Cross teams have been providing support on the ground in evacuation and relief centres. Red Cross is operating the Register.Find.Reunite service to reconnect families and loved ones who have been separated by the fires. Mr Richardson added that it was also important to look to the future as recovery was a complex process that could take years. “Many of the emotional impacts of the disaster won’t appear immediately, and some can take a long time to develop,” he said. residents about his journey at the city’s official Australia Day ceremony on Sunday 26 January. While Deng acknowledged Australia Day, he said another date meant more on a personal level. “The most important day is the day I arrived here,” he said. “That’s my Australia Day – it means a lot to me. “Obviously, Australia Day is important as well for Australians to come together. “It’s a way to recognise one another, accept there is a special knowledge we can gain from one another, and celebrate together. “[But] I’ll also look at it in terms of the disaster with the Indigenous [Australians] and the fires.” Deng said that he would use the occasion to reflect on the widespread loss of property and life from the devastating bushfires across the country. He added it was not a matter

of politics, but more about the community being able to voice its concerns. “This year, I will not celebrate Australia Day like I used to – I’ll pray instead and help to work on a way to move forward for the betterment of Australia,” he said. “We all need to pull up our socks and stop these fires from happening next year.”

Community shows support for mental health fundraiser A 100-kilometre event by foot in Newcastle has already raised more than $28,000 for suicide prevention and awareness. The Newy 100, which takes place on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 January, will see a team of local athletes pushed to the limit around the city’s beaches and foreshore. Every dollar raised from the event will go directly to Lifeline Hunter and Newcastle, helping local people access face-to-face counselling, telephone crisis support, bereavement support, and training. With the Christmas season done and dusted, another festive period is just around the corner. Chinese New Year, which will take place on Saturday 25 January, is often celebrated with a family feast of everyone’s favourites and specialities. Here's a delicious recipe for you to try, courtesy of Australian Eggs (australianeggs.org.au).

Chicken Fried Rice with Sliced Egg Omelette Serves: 4 2 tablespoons peanut oil 4 eggs, lightly beaten 250g chicken breast, thinly sliced 1 red capsicum, diced 1 cup frozen peas 4 shallots, thinly sliced 150g sugar snap peas, blanched 2 garlic cloves, crushed 450g pkt microwave jasmine rice, warmed ¼ cup kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) 2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine 1 teaspoon sesame oil Toasted sesame seeds, to serve

Heat 2 teaspoons of peanut oil in a wok or large deep non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add 2 eggs and swirl around the pan to form a thin omelette. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until just set. Transfer to a board, roll and slice thinly. Repeat with 2 teaspoons oil and remaining eggs to make 2 omelettes. Add remaining peanut oil to wok and return to high heat. Stir-fry chicken for 2-3 minutes or until golden. Add capsicum, peas, half the shallots, sugar snap peas and the garlic and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes or until just tender. Add rice and stir-fry for 2 minutes or until heated through. Mix together half the kecap manis, rice wine and sesame oil and add to the wok, tossing gently until well combined. Fold through half the sliced omelette. To serve, divide the rice between bowls and top with remaining sliced omelette, remaining shallots and a scatter of sesame seeds. Drizzle with remaining kecap manis.

It’s a place that transports visitors into a bright and colourful world. Newcastle Museum is home to sensory artist Bliss Cavanagh’s latest work, Summer Sensory Garden, which engages with the senses and is accessible to, and inclusive of, all. “It’s a multi-sensory experience filled with nature-inspired artworks and sculptures,” Cavanagh said. “There’s visual elements, like illuminated coloured lights and reflective surfaces, an array of textual elements and the sounds of whirring bubbles. “I've created many different types of sensory spaces and it’s always such a rewarding experience to see people engage with my work.” A strong advocate for mental health and a PhD researcher, Cavanagh is passionate about creating immersive environments that “can positively impact people’s emotions and wellbeing”. “Our environment has a huge impact on our health and wellbeing and can affect our emotions, mood and behaviour,” she said. Cavanagh was drawn to sensory works because of her personal experience of living with Tourette syndrome.

She said that all aspects of the work, from the creative artmaking process to the final experience of the finished work, were very therapeutic for her. Cavanagh has created installations for numerous community events and galleries, and she’s designed sensory rooms for hospitals, schools, mental health units and disability organisations. The sensory space at Newcastle Museum features fluffball flowers, butterflies and rainbow furry delights. Cavanagh said the response to the garden had been incredible. “The adults are loving it just as much as the children,” she said. “It’s so amazing to see kids exploring the installation in their own unique way and their reactions when they first walk into the garden, filled with awe and excitement as they venture into another world.” The Summer Sensory Garden will exhibit at Newcastle Museum until Sunday 2 February. July Fertilise citrus this month. Ground-grown plants should be fed with poultry manure which is applied out under the canopy’s drip line – water fi rst, then again after fertiliser has been applied. Three weeks later, follow this same procedure using citrus fertiliser. Note: never apply citrus fertiliser to potted grown citrus – use a slow release such as Organic Life. Once camellias have fi nished flowering, deadhead and trim to shape, feeding with cow manure and mulching with peat moss which maintains acidity levels. If growing in containers, ask for advice at your local nursery. One of the loveliest spring/summer flowering plants will be coming out of dormancy – hydrangeas should be pruned back to two plump eyes. Fertilising can be questionable. White doesn’t change colour, whereas blues, pinks and reds can easily be distorted colour-wise by applying incorrect fertiliser. Blue requires an acidic soil using a blueing compound. If pink is preferred, apply lime. Plant early tomatoes in soil

prepared with cow manure one week beforehand. Lawns should be sprayed for weeds before fertilising. Bindii is a great product to use on all types of grasses. September Lawns shouldn’t be fertilised until they are actively growing. Top dress brown areas and apply Green Flourish weekly to promote green growth. Naturally, spring has sprung, and our gardens need feeding. Use cow manure to fertilise agapanthus, murraya and gardenia. If gardenias develop yellow leaves as a result of setting flowers, and lack of water, apply chelated iron and keep well-watered. Tropical plants such as hibiscus shouldn’t be pruned until the warm weather is established. After pruning hibiscus, fertilise with cow manure. Old favourites, such as diosma and daisies, should be lightly pruned after flowering. Never cut these shrubs back to hard wood.

August Pruning should begin this month but be careful not to prune spring flowering trees and shrubs. Fertilising is a must after pruning to kick-start new growth. If in doubt about which fertiliser to apply, you should use a product such as Organic Life, which has a neutral pH. Prune roses towards the end of this month, including bush roses and floribundas, but not climbers – they should be pruned, only if necessary after they have their summer flush. Ground grown roses will need to be sprayed with lime sulphur, fed with a bucketful of poultry manure, then fed three weeks later with a handful of rose fertiliser. Potted roses can be fed with Sudden Impact, which is slow release. Areas prone to late frosts should wait until late August before pruning as frost will burn new growth. Leaf curl can be a problem for stone fruit, which can be alleviated by spraying with copper sulphate during the last two weeks of July (then again during early August).

My favourite things BASKETBALL I’ve always loved to play sport, and basketball is my favourite. I currently play a couple of seasons a year and it is a perfect way for me to keep fit and have great fun at the same time.

Newcastle Volunteer Service Award recipient

Curtis is a born and bred Novocastrian. He developed a keen interest in social justice issues, particularly homelessness and mental health, from a young age. In 2018, Curtis took this interest in social justice and put it into practice, volunteering for organisations around the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area. This included working as a youth volunteer for the St Vincent De Paul Society, where Curtis takes young people from disadvantaged backgrounds on respite activities such as bowling and laser tag and on a weekend retreat to the Great Aussie Bush Camp. Curtis is also an advocate for the need for affordable housing and its role in helping to minimise homelessness. He volunteers for organisations including Soul Café, YWCA, The Salvos, Vinnies and The Samaritans. Curtis was awarded the 2019 Newcastle Volunteer Service Award from the honourable Sharon Claydon MP.

My two dogs Chopper and my youngest one Lola always keep me busy. Whenever I come home they are waiting for me with a smile on their face and a wagging tail. They both love to play fetch with their balls and the dog park is their most favourite place.

PHOTOGRAPHY I love to get out in nature and take photos of the beauty that is on offer. From taking photos of wildlife to crashing waves, it is a great way for me to relax, with nothing but me and my camera.

NETFLIX I love to watch a good Netflix series – everything from comedy to drama and all in between. Some of my favourite ones at the moment are You, Gotham, Atypical, Schitts Creek, Arrow and Daredevil.
