Newcastle Weekly contents
thursday 12 december 2019
This week... From the editor Planet Earth – so powerful, and yet so fragile. As I write this column, I’m currently following rolling coverage of the volcano eruption on White Island in New Zealand, where there are reports of five people dead and another eight missing. Closer to home, we’ve been swamped by smoke as bushfi res show no sign of ending, while the relentless drought tightens its grip. Humans obviously haven’t helped with this but, to pick a positive from dire situations, the tireless and selfless work of emergency services, as well as civilians, has been exceptional. In New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern praised the bravery of helicopter pilots who flew to the island shortly after the eruption to rescue stranded people. Step back almost 30 years, and it was the same response in Newcastle. When an earthquake struck the city at 10.27am on Thursday 28 December 1989, the community fought through shock and despair to help each other. Tragically, 13 people lost their lives, while another 160 were hospitalised. We cover a photojournalist’s experience of the unexpected natural disaster on pages 14 and 15.

news Beach safety a priority Surf life savers are on high alert. Coastal drowning tragedies are up by 22% across the state; 44 people have tragically lost their lives along the NSW coast over the 2018-19 period, with three of these drownings coming in the Hunter Region. The 2019 Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) Coastal Safety Report shows that 86% of victims were male, 59% of the drownings occurred at a beach location, and 7% were attempting to rescue someone else. Water safety professionals and volunteers are working tirelessly to reduce the drowning toll. They hope these statistics will drop this year through targeted safety messages and increased surveillance. “Swim between the flags and don’t go beyond your ability,”

Hunter Surf Life Saving President, Henry Scruton, says. “If you’re in trouble, wave your hand and, as hard as this sounds, if you do get into trouble, don’t panic.” SLSNSW is launching new equipment, such as drones, jet skis and other support operations vehicles, to help save lives this summer. Nearly half of the drownings are occurring away from patrolled areas, and Mr Scruton says they are working hard to try and encourage people to swim at patrolled beaches. There are services that can aid people who are in remote or unpatrolled locations, but they may often be too late. He says that, if you do witness someone in trouble, only attempt a rescue if you are a strong and confident swimmer. “Unfortunately some of our

statistics are made up of people who, in all good faith, went to rescue somebody and got into trouble themselves,” Mr Scruton says. “If you are a good swimmer, and you think you can cope with it, by all means offer assistance. “If you are not a good swimmer, it sounds dreadful, but it’s better to have one loss rather than two.” He says it is best to “notify somebody else, call for assistance,
and get help”. “You can even call 000,” he says. “We have a 24-hour call out system up and down the coast, so if you ring 000, they are able to get in contact with a surf life saver in most areas and they can come and offer assistance.” Go to surflifesaving.com.au to view the report or to learn more about coastal safety. - Elizabeth Symington

news Bequest a boost for rural communities
The late Betty Josephine Fyffe.
Aspiring doctors and nurses from regional and remote areas will have a greater opportunity to fulfill their career aspirations following a generous bequest from beloved Tamworth resident Betty Fyffe. The University of Newcastle is set to make $10,000 funding available each year to 20 high-achieving
students from less advantaged backgrounds. It will also establish a Betty Josephine Fyffe Chair in Rural Health to oversee quality rural training and research and advocate for improved health outcomes for rural Australians. “Every Australian, no matter where they live, should have access to world-leading healthcare,” the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky, said. “This incredible bequest will give students from regional and remote areas the educational platform to make a difference in areas that need it most, and the University of Newcastle is incredibly grateful and privileged that we have been chosen to help carry out Betty’s wishes for more equitable health outcomes for Australians.” Statistics from the Australian
Medical Association reveal life expectancy in remote areas is up to seven years lower than those in major cities, with higher rates of heart and lung disease, suicide, and cancer. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare also states the number of doctors per 100,000 of the population in major cities is 437, while there is 272 in outer regional areas and only 264 in very remote areas. Students who come from rural areas but move away from home are up to three times more likely to return during their working life. Elizabeth “Betty” Josephine Fyffe had a passion for nursing, serving at the Prince of Wales Hospital for many years before returning as a volunteer in retirement. She passed away on 6 January 2019, aged 92.

news Wave of momentum on mental health awareness Rhys Denton’s legacy will be felt for years to come. Sadly, Rhys passed away a few weeks ago at the age of just 22, with his death coming as a shock to all who knew him. Despite their loss, his family and friends are bringing awareness to mental health issues and aim to promote connection, community, and conversations. Younger brother Lennex wanted to do something to honour Rhys. So, after exploring a few ideas, and gathering community support, a Facebook page – Rhys Riding Waves of Wellness – was born. Throughout November, the group organised a Rhys Denton Day, hosted several challenges, and started a conversation about mental health.
They managed to raise a total of $14,000, which has now been donated to headspace Newcastle to facilitate surf therapy programs through the Waves of Wellness Foundation. Community Development Officer at headspace Newcastle, Byron Williams, says awareness of support services is vital, particularly those outside of business hours, because “there is no calendar for mental health issues”. “If a younger person is struggling, they need to reach out to someone,” he says. “It’s phenomenal for headspace to see people connected from the community and, for us, the money is great, but just seeing the community take up the torch

for mental health and [start] conversations is the most important thing.” Rhys’ family plans to host the challenge every year. His mum, Catherine, says she wants people to remember him and check in on their mates. “It is one thing to say are you okay but it’s another thing to go further than that,” she says. “Everyone goes: ‘How you going? ‘Yeah I’m alright’, but
to actually educate ourselves to be able to help someone who is struggling [is important].” If you or anyone you know is struggling, visit headspace.org.au/ eheadspace, call Lifeline’s Crisis Support Line on 13 11 14 or contact your local GP. Go to the Rhys Riding Waves of Wellness – WOW Facebook page for more information or call headspace on 4929 4201 to donate. - Elizabeth Symington

news Campaign calls for inclusivity People living with disability are twice as likely to be unemployed than the general population. Newcastle-based organisation Life Without Barriers wants this to change. Its new campaign, Employment Without Barriers, is hoping to create employment opportunities for people living with disability and bring awareness to the barriers they can face. “We are breaking down the psychological barrier that people have around people with disabilities,” Life Without Barriers Executive Lead Disability Engagement, Chris Chippendale, said. “There is a perception that people with a disability are less competent and less able, when they can actually bring so much to the workplace.” Graphic Designer Dom Freestone believed an inclusive workplace made going to work so much easier. At the age of 23, Mr Freestone was involved in a diving accident that broke his neck. He now lives as a C5-6 quadriplegic. Mr Freestone said the lifealtering moment proved a real challenge, adding he struggled to find himself again amidst learning how to operate with his new abilities. He said the hardest thing was “being the guy in the wheelchair”. “It’s easy to stay at home and

watch Netflix but getting out and being social, going to parties or just out, you really have to push yourself out of your comfort zone,” he said. “It’s a long journey, it didn’t happen overnight, you lose your self-worth and you go through that depression – it takes a little while to realise you can still contribute to the community.” After deciding to go back to university to study Visual Communication, Mr Freestone graduated first in his degree. When applying for jobs, he was upfront about his disability and received few call backs. While this could have been due to the nature of industry, he believed it probably had more to do with his disability. Both Mr Freestone and Mr Chippendale want workplaces to open their mind to the potential of working with someone living with disability. “One in five Australians have some form of a disability,” Mr Chippendale said. “Being disability-friendly can improve the business – it’s not just the right thing to do, it can bring so much to the workplace.” Visit lwb.org.au for more. - Elizabeth Symington

On 28 December 1989, one of the most serious natural disasters in Australia’s history struck Newcastle. Photojournalist Steve Tickner was in his apartment at Parkway Avenue when an earthquake, measuring 5.6 on the Richter magnitude scale, hit at 10.27am. “It was strong enough to throw me to the ground,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “At first, I thought maybe it was a gas explosion and then I thought another air force jet had crashed into The Junction because that happened in the past. “Then I realised what it really was. “I picked myself up, grabbed my camera bag, and went out into the street.” Mr Tickner hitched a ride with a couple who had been standing outside and arrived at Newcastle
Workers Club. After entering the club, he looked around the poker machine floor and walked across to the auditorium entrance, before spending time downstairs and in the carpark. He said the scene was “like a movie that you don’t think actually happens”. “It was an enormously dangerous situation because everyone knows that with earthquakes there’s always a strong chance of an aftershock, and that was not a building you wanted to be inside of if there was one,” he said. “The poker machine floor was just covered in money – literally all the machines had spat out their entire contents – and a big beam had gone through the cashier’s office and everything was spilled all over the floor. “The rescue squad guys and

police, they kind of knew me by sight. “I’d been working in the area for years, so they left me alone and I stayed out of their way.” Mr Tickner said that emergency services started to cordon off the club about an hour after the quake struck. However, he kept working inside and didn’t sleep for almost four days. The earthquake claimed 13 lives, nine of whom were at the workers club; three people were also killed in Beaumont Street, Hamilton, while one died of shock. Another 160 people had to be taken to hospital, 50,000 buildings were damaged, and 300,000 people were affected, with isolated reports of movement up to 800 kilometres from Newcastle. One aftershock was recorded on 29 December. The earthquake left a damage bill estimated to be about $4 billion. Mr Tickner said it was completely unexpected.
“On a global scale, it wasn’t particularly strong – there have certainly been far worse ones – but Newcastle was totally unprepared for it,” he said. “The buildings weren’t even built with an earthquake in mind, so that’s where part of the problem came from.” On the 30th anniversary of the shock, an exhibition at Newcastle ArtSpace, titled five.point.six: The Newcastle Earthquake, is featuring images captured by Mr Tickner, many of which have not been published or seen by the public. The exhibition aimed to look at the way Novocastrians responded to the natural disaster. Mr Tickner said that his photos highlighted the community working together. “What impressed me the most, and what is reflected in a lot of the photos, is the willingness of people to get straight in and start working on

the problem,” he said. “It became apparent quite early that there were a lot of people still trapped under the rubble. “The photos are of ambulance personnel, rescue services from up and down the Hunter Valley, the police rescue squad, the fire brigade and also civilians, who were all quite
willing to get involved and help with the situation.” The exhibition will be open at 91 Chinchen Street, Tighes Hill, until Sunday 22 December. Visit newcastle.nsw.gov.au/library and search ‘Earthquake Collection’ for more information and statistics. - Ben Murphy

news Car theft initiative
CityServe delivers
Traffic woes
Having a car stolen is stressful, inconvenient and costly, particularly during the festive season. However, it’s the unfortunate reality that many residents across the Lower Hunter will face, with motor vehicle thefts traditionally spiking over summer. Mayors from the Greater Newcastle Area, including Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and Port Stephens, have joined forces in a region-wide initiative to reduce incidents of vehicle theft. City of Newcastle received $15,000 in funding from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council to roll out a new campaign. “One of the biggest factors to motor vehicle theft is home break-ins – it’s common for a home burglar to steal car keys,” City of Newcastle Community Safety Facilitator, Lisa Davis, said. “The majority of home burglaries are opportunistic, with burglars targeting houses they perceive as providing the easiest and quickest access points.” Simple tips include keeping your vehicle keys out of sight when you are at home, and not including your name and address on key ring tags.
More than 300 volunteers who completed 14 community projects in Lake Macquarie have been acknowledged at a special function. The work was undertaken as part of the 2019 CityServe – a partnership between volunteers from churches, businesses and local organisations. This year’s projects included the painting of grandstands at Jack McLaughlan Oval, Edgeworth; landscaping and general tidy up at Warners Bay Early Learning Centre; tree plantings at Whitebridge High School; and painting and landscaping at Ulinga Oval, Cardiff South. “CityServe provides such a wonderful service to our community year after year,” Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said. “The program brings together people for a common cause, generating goodwill and beautifully demonstrating the adage that many hands make light work.” Since its inception, CityServe volunteers have contributed to the completion of an estimated $500,000 worth of projects.
Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison says traffic “chaos” around the Maitland railway station remains the number one problem that drives frustrated motorists to call her office. In 2016, the State Government opened a $51 million eastbound overpass near the roundabout in a bid to ease growing congestion and, following widespread criticism, switched on new traffic lights in October as part of a twostage process. Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has now released a proposal that includes modifying the roundabout to provide two through lanes from Church Street to Cessnock Road, and providing two right-turn lanes into Cessnock Road for eastbound traffic on the New England Highway. The RMS has invited Maitland residents to offer feedback on the plan up until Friday 13 December. “I encourage every Maitland resident who is affected by this to speak up,” Ms Aitchison says. Email RMS’ Project Manager Paul Galvin via paul.galvin@rms.nsw.gov.au or visit rms.nsw. gov.au and complete an online survey.

news Stockton’s sand arrives The delivery of five-and-a-half-thousand tonnes of sand to Stockton Beach began this week. The sand is a part of City of Newcastle’s anticipated beach nourishment project, in response to the severe erosion at the southern end of the beach. The City has been planning the $350,000 project for more than a month and is still working with the state government to prepare a long-term plan for the beach. Stockton Surf Life Saving Club President Callan Nickerson said the start of the project was good news for his members. It is slated for completion before the Christmas period. “The Christmas holidays are a big part of our season with volunteer patrols and club members all using the beach so, while it may be shortterm, we are looking forward to seeing the results and getting sand back on this stretch of the beach,” Mr Nickerson said. “While we welcome the start of the project, we are committed to fighting for a long-term solution for Stockton’s erosion problem.” Up to 50 trucks a day will deliver sand to the eastern part of King Street using Fullerton Street and King Street from Nelson Bay Road. There will be no public access to the southern section of Stockton Beach between the Lexie’s café accessway and King Street for the duration of the project. A second stage is planned next year, with more sand to be placed north of the Lexie’s café accessway, subject to further funding approvals. - Elizabeth Symington

news Star shares story to inspire others joints, blood, and muscles. Following the diagnosis, her doctors were able to create a plan to help bring her Lupus “under control”. “I’m perfectly capable of doing everything everyone else does, I just have to look after myself,” Chloe said. Now aged 28, the Doctor Doctor star has become a new ambassador for the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and is sharing her story to encourage people to donate blood and save lives like hers. “One in three people will need blood in their lifetime – that should be more than enough encouragement to give the gift of life,” she said. Chloe featured in the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood’s new TV series Giving Life this month. Giving Life follows the stories of those who give and receive blood and make life possible. “I was more than happy to share my story, even though it’s hard to put yourself out there sometimes,” she said. “I have had hundreds and hundreds of messages since [sharing my story] and some are

Chloe Bayliss is not your average television star. At the age of 17, she became seriously ill and was fighting for her life. “I became very sick, suddenly, [and] I was rushed into hospital with an allergic reaction to medication I was taking to stop vomiting,” Chloe said. The former Newcastle resident, who suffered from seizures, a rare blood disease and failing kidneys, needed a minimum of 12 bags of plasma a week to survive. Doctors struggled to determine what she was experiencing and treated her with different medications to see if anything would work. After sending blood samples all around the world and having “close to a year of treatment three times a week”, including dialysis and plasmapheresis, Chloe received a diagnosis. “Finally, they were able to diagnose me with Lupus,” she said. Lupus is an incurable autoimmune disease that is caused by the immune system attacking its own tissue. For Chloe, the disease affected her kidneys,

Hall celebrates special year Red Bull Air Race world champion Matt Hall celebrated alongside his team and supporters at Lake Macquarie Airport on Sunday. The Hunter-based pilot won the championship in Chiba, Japan, at the start of September, beating former champions Yoshihide Muroya and Martin Šonka to claim
his maiden title. It snapped years of near-misses for Australia’s only representative, who finished as championship runner-up on three previous occasions – 2015, 2016 and 2018 – and the victory came in the nick of time. In May, Red Bull announced the series would not continue past the
Chiba event, citing a lack of interest outside of the aviation community. Hall said his championship win was the culmination of years of hard work. “It is satisfying, but the most overwhelming emotion is relief that I’ve been able to achieve it prior to the series finishing,” he said. During the special celebration at the weekend, fans were able to meet Hall, take photos and buy merchandise, while aircraft was also on display, including the team’s former race plane. “As an Australian, who is also representing Newcastle, it was just about putting on an event for everyone to see firsthand what they’ve been supporting over the years,” Hall said. Hall ended his Red Bull Air Race career with an enviable record of one world championship, seven career race wins, and 30 overall podiums. - Ben Murphy
Jets downed Newcastle was left to rue missed opportunities on Sunday when Adelaide star James Troisi popped up to snatch a late winner at Coopers Stadium. The Jets dominated large periods of the A-League clash, but the hosts took the lead against the run of play in the 30th minute via substitute George Blackwood. Newcastle found a deserved equaliser just after the break when defender Matt Millar powered a header past Adelaide goalkeeper Paul Izzo. However, Troisi delivered a cruel blow in the 83rd minute when he skipped past two challenges and slipped the ball under Newcastle goalkeeper Glen Moss to hand his side a 2-1 win. The Jets will tackle Melbourne City from 6.30pm on Sunday 15 December at McDonald Jones Stadium.

All eyes on the skies for kite festival All eyes will be fixed on the skies at Swansea’s Caves Beach this Sunday 15 December when the inaugural Festival of Kites soars into action. The Australian Kite Flying Society (AKS), which is hosting the free event, will display an array of large colourful kites, with an assortment of animals and shapes set to come to life in the air. “Unlock your imagination and see lots of kites flying in the sky,” AKS Public Officer and event organiser, Tony Walker, says. Walker organised the event because there wasn’t one
in Newcastle. Officially, there will be 10 flyers for the day because of restrictions, but Walker says people can expect to see hundreds of different kites taking to the sky at different points throughout the event. The AKS was founded in 1978 to foster kite flying as a recreational pursuit and to bring together likeminded people. According to Walker, “the imagination is the limit of what we can do”. The society is best known for its annual Festival of the Winds at Bondi Beach – the only day of

the year kites can be flown at the location. AKS member Robert Moore and his team are the world altitude record holders for the highestflying single kite. They have held the record since 2014, and Walker hopes to have this record-setting kite on display at the event. Most people are introduced to kites as a child and Walker is no different, having been flying and creating kites from a young age. He says it’s a hobby that can have many health benefits. The event at Caves Beach will
go from 10am to 5pm. Everyone is invited to come along to enjoy the spectacle; people are encouraged to bring a picnic or buy food and beverages from local shops. If you can’t make it to the Festival of Kites, the society also hosts kite flying gatherings on the third Sunday of each month at Stockton Beach. One of Australia’s favourite scientists, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, is touring the country with his 45th book, Dr Karl’s Random Road Trip Through Science. This Saturday 14 December, he will meet fans from the Hunter Region, with his road trip including stops at Maitland and Charlestown. Dr Karl will be at Stockland Green Hills (outside H&M and JB Hi-Fi) from 9.45am and Dymocks Charlestown from 2pm. In this latest book, he is on a mission to track down and understand the awe and wonder in the universe. What nearly destroyed humanity on Halloween 2015? Do fish drink water? His book will give you the answers. It provides a random ride through everything, from rogue planets and atoms and all that’s in between. His enthusiasm for science is infectious and he displays the true wonder of it all in this book. It is the first of his books that involves Augmented Reality (AR). There is an app that can give you access to AR features; Dr Karl will pop up like a hologram to tell you what is in the chapter and you can unlock extra information.

Two world-renowned artists, Els van Baarle and Jette Clover, will unite for their first Australian exhibition at Newcastle’s Timeless Textiles Gallery. The Linguistic Marks exhibition combines the diverse styles of the highly-skilled artists around the common theme they share – a love of text and writing. Textile artist/teacher from the Netherlands, van Baarle, teaches surface design classes all over the world. “I love the slow process of using wax and dye many times, to recreate the wear and tear of time,” she said. “The result is a wonderful cloth with a wealth of colour and depth.” Apart from van Baarle, Clover
was born in Copenhagen but lived and worked in the US and the Netherlands before settling in Antwerp, Belgium. “I was a journalist before I became an artist, which is why almost all my artwork contains pieces of text,” Clover said. “I am inspired by mark-making, both in the form of handwriting and the layered and fragmented words and letters in the urban landscape – faded signs, tattered posters, flashy advertisements and bold graffiti.” Both artists share a love of old books and documents. They are curious about what survives or endures the passage of time. Text as image, text as a vehicle for meaning, and the tactile nature

Ditch dodgy light displays Santa’s Christmas helpers have been urged to take every precaution to protect Australian children from dodgy Christmas light displays this festive season. Electrical industry and safety advocates Master Electricians Australia issued an alert to consumers to take extra care purchasing and installing Christmas light displays. “We’re seeing more and more people get into the festive spirit to light up the neighbourhood but unfortunately, more people are also buying suspect LED lights
from overseas or installing lighting without the safety backup necessary to provide adequate protection,’’ Master Electricians Australia Chief Executive, Malcolm Richards, said. “Kids love these displays but that’s why homeowners need to make sure they have the right layers of safety protection in place to prevent any accidents.’’ Master Electricians Australia provided a Christmas safety checklist, which includes: 1. Checking for an Australian approval number when purchasing lights such as
Q12345, V01294 or N12345 – most times this is on the transformer. 2. Visiting recalls.gov.au to check for any recalled Christmas lights – even the best retailers’ issue these from time to time. 3. Ensure you have safety switches installed – preferably on all circuits in your home, but definitely on the circuits powering your Christmas lights. Check they work by pushing the test button and seeing the lights go out. 4. Only use lights designed for external use. Generally, these
types will have a transformer. 5. Ensure your outdoor connections are weatherproofed. 6. Keep clear of powerlines, swimming pools, driveways and walkways. 7. Go solar if you can – it’s better for the environment, and safer for you. 8. Do not run 240-volt cabling to outside garden beds and lighting. 9. Install smoke detectors around the house, if you haven’t already. 10. Secure outdoor lights to fixtures and keep out of children’s reach.

phobia about giving plants? The best Christmas gift is a bright red poinsettia – the care of these lovely plants is fairly minimal. The secret to maintaining poinsettias’ colourful bracts over an extended period is careful watering. When watering, do so under the leaves and not on the crown as a debilitating fungal disease can result from wetting the bracts (which aren’t really flowers). If you do notice the newer bracts shrivelling, spray with a fungicide. Poinsettias are actually part of the Euphorbia family, which can also contain spiky cactus. It is a large genus, with close to 2,000 species, but our Christmas poinsettias can be planted in the garden in a frost-free climate where, under normal growing conditions, it will flower during winter. Potted plants are artificially cultivated for our Christmas season but, next year, will revert to winter flowering. Gift vouchers are an ideal gift for garden lovers – I have customers
All you’ll want for Christmas is a bright red poinsettia IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
Here we are again at Christmas giving time. To me it is a real problem – I decided many years ago not to take the easy way out and give a pot and a plant and, each year, I regret this vow. This week, I went Christmas shopping. One business wasn’t open,
without even a sign on the door. Next stop was the jewellers, where I wanted to buy matching gifts – no luck. In the end I gave in and bought more of the same and, lastly, going online for my grandson, I bombed out big time. Okay, you are thinking, what would I suggest if I overlooked my
who give their dad vouchers on each special occasion, which satisfies his garden passion all year round. The worst Christmas gift is a plant without a pot as this causes expense for the receiver. Obviously, something in flower for Christmas is ideal. For example, a NSW Christmas Bush, which flowers at this time each year.
THIS WEEK • Prune side shoots off tomatoes – keep an eye out for fruit fly, hang traps and sticky tapes. • Plant dahlia tubers and gladiolus corms, or punnets of dahlias. • Watering obviously is a problem – don’t worry about the lawn, it will soon pick up after rain. Concentrate on plants that are desperate for water.

Retrofit double glazing into your existing timber windows
W
ant to cut energy expenses, retain character, and reduce noise? Thermawood is passionate about creating solutions that suit your lifestyle and property, working tirelessly to help many Australian homeowners improve their quality of living. Most houses in Australia still have single glass panels for their home’s exterior windows and doors, which often isn’t enough to keep homeowners comfortable in fluctuating temperature conditions. That’s where Thermawood’s unique retrofit double-glazing system comes in. Established ten years ago in New Zealand, the Thermawood
patented retrofit double glazing system has been developed following years of practical experience with techniques of double-glazing on projects large and small. It has since been adapted to Australian market conditions. After launching in Melbourne, Thermawood is now expanding on its existing franchisees in Victoria, NSW and South Australia, with the technology recently becoming available in the Hunter Region. Retrofitting is the installation of double-glazing and draught seals into existing timber windows and doors, with sealed doubled glazed units instead of single glazing. Thermawood retrofit double glazing lets in as much sunlight
The most advanced double glazing systems for existing timber windows
as single glazing systems yet can remain substantially warmer and cooler because of its excellent heat retention qualities. The system improves insultation by as much as 73%; reduces noise by 70%; reduces condensation from forming on the inner surfaces of your windows, which means a drier, healthier home; reduces UV damage to indoor soft furnishings; offers better security, with options for safety glass; and is eco-friendly by retaining perfectly sound existing timber windows and door frames to reduce the amount of joinery waste that goes to landfi lls. The Thermawood process is a simple one. First, you can request a quote
Thermawood Newcastle A: 163B Northcote Avenue, Swansea T: 0434 988 076 W: thermawood.com.au E: aurelio@thermawood.com.au
and schedule an appointment. You’ll then have a free assessment before being sent a quote. The next step allows you to either approve your quote or adjust it to suit your needs and, once it’s approved, the installation begins. This usually takes two hours per panel. Depending on how many windows you have in your home, the entire installation process can be done in one day or a week. Thermawood will never leave your home unsecure during the process and every window that has been started will be completed the same day. For high-quality thermal solutions, don’t hesitate to contact Thermawood today.

Billie’s intuitive powers and spiritual beliefs will be at peak power. Although her ideals may not be appreciated by everyone she encounters, she will discover stronger selfbelief. By developing the power of conviction and self-discipline, she will find a greater sense of inner balance. She must learn to let go of past emotional issues to improve her life and her personal relationships. This might mean severing ties with the some of the people who are in her life now.

The focus continues to be on your family or loved ones this month. Passions that have been kept secret or under wraps will no longer be hidden. The full moon on the 12th warns you to take some time for rest and recuperation otherwise you’re going to be exhausted.
The full moon on the 12th indicates that something you buy online may be faulty or something is missing, so you may prefer to buy from local bricks and mortar retailers. There will be more dealings with your mother or older female relatives this month.
The full moon on the 12th indicates that Murphy’s Law is going to be in action at work and you need to be careful of something going wrong at the most inconvenient moment! At times like these, it’s important to keep calm and seek wise counsel from experienced colleagues.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
There will be a re-connection with siblings and relatives, especially cousins or those on the same wavelength as yourself. The full moon on the 12th indicates a need to be careful of breaking any laws, even minor ones, as it’s highly likely you will get caught.
indicating a need to be more attentive on the roads. Whilst it may be convenient to drink and drive or to put your foot down, it’s dangerous, illegal and you’re likely to be caught, so be more accountable and responsible.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The full moon on the 12th warns you to be careful of your hardearned cash. Be certain when you’re out and about that you know where your valuables are at all times. This is the time of the year when light fingers go to work!
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Health or legal matters could enter your private life. The full moon on the 12th falls directly in your sign and is a stress factor indicating that your home may start to resemble something of a battle ground. Do your best not to be drawn into other people’s dramas.
The full moon on the 12th indicates that you need to be careful of how you deal with your closest friends if you don’t want to lose one of them. It’s important for you to be more conscious of your speech and actions, to be honest yet tactful and considerate.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT The full moon on the 12th is warning to be careful of treading on the toes or egos of others at work, especially your bosses or colleagues whose opinion and reputation you value. Offer your suggestions or opinions on a work matter only if asked for them.
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC The full moon on the 12th indicates that troubles or disagreements with loved ones are likely, especially if their demands or expectations are excessive. You might need to manage their expectations. If you are not buying a property, you might refurbish the one you’re living in.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB The full moon on the 12th indicates that you need to be careful of overindulging in too much alcohol or food. There may be some kind of secret relationship going on, such as keeping in touch with a black sheep relative that the rest of the family ignores.
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR At work, you will have to work in cooperation with and possibly in charge of others, you cannot achieve much on your own. The full moon on the 12th indicates that you may need the services of your local handyman or plumber as something will need to be repaired at home.

My favourite things
CARROTS I love the smell of carrots! Purple, white or orange, doesn’t matter – although orange is the most popular.
FAMILY There have been many much-loved snowmen, women and children across the centuries. More recently, Olaf (my third cousin twice removed) has become quite famous for his antics in Frozen.
SNOW
Photo iStock
While up to 60% of the human adult body is water, basically 100% of a snow person’s body is snow (crystalline flakes of frozen water). As Dean Martin crooned back in the day: “Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!” I can’t get enough of the cold, white stuff.
Frosty the Snowman Older distant cousin of Olaf (made famous through Disney’s Frozen franchise), Frosty has been a perennial favourite since Gene Autry first sang about him in the early 1950s. An animated 1969 Christmas television special catapulted him to even greater fame. Having moved from North America to the North Pole to be safe from melting, Frosty is hopeful of remaining safe from climate change if humans can collectively do all they can to help protect planet Earth.
WINTER It’s the most wonderful time of the year; particularly here in the North Pole where winter is the most enchanting season.
KNITTING I took up knitting after being captivated by kind humans leaving colourful scarves around the “necks” (area between smaller head snowball and bigger body snowball) of my fellow snowmen, women and children. Strengthens my twiggy arms and stimulates my frozen brain.
