This week... From the editor

Beans, beans, and more beans: that’s largely been my diet for the past week or so. Since watching Netflix documentary, The Game Changers, I’ve become a part-time vegan. The show discusses the benefits of plant-based eating for athletes (I like to loosely refer to myself as one of these as well). It includes interviews with several celebrities, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, and lists more than a dozen producers, including James Cameron (of Titanic and Avatar fame) and Pamela Anderson. While my minor lifestyle change has prompted a few new nicknames – Vegan Boy and VB are the only printable ones – it’s something that I have been considering for some time in order to lower my meat intake. I would like to commit to the vegan lifestyle for a month to see what happens but, with Christmas just around the corner, I am hesitant to do so in case I cave to cravings. For those of you who aren’t vegan, we’ve got a delicious looking Taste section this week – a Smoky Barbecue Spare Ribs recipe features on page 29. Meanwhile, our cover star – Hunter Valley-based NSW Rural Fire Service volunteer Kat Robinson-Williams – made national and international headlines last week. Her story can be found on pages 18 and 19. -Ben Murphy

Fundraiser to uphold legacy Three years ago, the Cameron family received heart-breaking news. Peter’s cancer was back and had been growing undetected for quite some time. He was initially diagnosed with Unresectable Non-Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma, a rare form of

kidney cancer, three decades ago and endured his first surgery to remove the original cancer and a kidney. It then grew undetected for the next 28 years. Dietary issues and a trip to the doctors eventually uncovered a large tumour was spreading to his spine. Peter underwent radiation and

surgery, which proved unsuccessful, leaving him with six months to live. However, the discovery of a clinical trial managed to save his life for another 18 months. The immunotherapy clinical trial involved fortnightly blood tests, a check-up with the doctor, and then an infusion if all was well. “His only real option was the clinical trial,” daughter Megan Baird said. “At the time, the trial wasn’t even something we were aware of. “He was one of the longest surviving participants. “It gave him and us quality of life; his body didn’t have to fight as hard.” Sadly, Peter passed away in September, but his family has started a fundraiser in his memory and hopes to donate $10,000 to the Medical Oncology Clinical Trials Unit at the Calvary Mater Newcastle. The trials unit is self-funded and offers cancer patients with

opportunities for the latest clinical trials. Ms Baird said the fundraiser was the family’s way to give back, while also raising awareness. “It was an amazing gift they gave us – to have more time with him,” she said. “We are really fortunate for that extra time. “[Dad’s] legacy will create more awareness for trials like this.” Ms Baird added that “it’s been good to push energy into something that is going to make a difference”. If the $10,000 target is met, she plans to shave her head in a bid to promote her father and the trials. Before Peter died, he and his wife Catherine discussed matching whatever is raised to bring the total donation up to $20,000. Search Remembering Pete – Oncology Clinical Trials Unit at gofundme.com if you would like to donate. - Elizabeth Symington

ORICA KOORAGANG ISLAND COMMUNITY UPDATE FERN BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL UNVEILS NEW LEARNING SPACE Fern Bay Public School recently revealed its new learning space designed to integrate STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) into the curriculum. Principal Drew Janetzki said: “We want to provide our students with the skills they need to embrace the jobs of the future. Our school community recognises the need to make STEM fun, interesting, hands on and engaging from an early age. Our new ‘makerspace’ will help foster collaboration, discovery, creativity and innovation.” The school used a grant from the Orica Kooragang Island Community Investment Program to help fund the project.

REMEDIATION PROJECT COMPLETE A project to remediate arsenic-contaminated soil and groundwater near the site’s north western boundary has been completed, on time and on budget. The works involved the construction of a 12-metre deep, low-permeability, below-ground wall to enclose the arsenic contamination. A cap was then constructed above ground to minimise rainwater entering the contained area. Ongoing groundwater monitoring will be utilised to ensure the system is operating effectively. The contamination is the result of an historical manufacturing process in which an arsenic-containing solution was used in the ammonia plant. The practice was ceased in 1994, before Orica took over ownership of the site in 2003.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROGRAM UPDATE Royal Life Saving NSW: The organisation recently delivered first aid training to young mums in the Newcastle region, thanks to a $4,800 grant. Stockton Tennis Club: The club used a $6,500 grant to help fund the replacement of an old fence that divides the upper and lower courts.

FRIDAY CHILL Orica is proud to announce that it will continue sponsorship of Soul Café’s Friday Chill in 2020. The weekly events are set to be held in Pacific Park between 6.30pm and 8.30pm from 10 January to 27 March. Soul Café provides hundreds of free meals per week to highly disadvantaged members of our community many of whom are homeless, have a mental illness, substance abuse issue or live in poverty. Friday Chill is the café’s way of thanking the community for its support, activating a public space and raising awareness of the café’s work. The events will feature two hours of music performed by a variety of local artists. BYO blanket, nibbles and drinks.

news Lifeline’s wrap on shopping A new campaign hopes to kick-start a conversation around sustainable shopping ahead of the festive splurge. Lifeline announced its Re-Love, Re-Wrap, Re-Give this Christmas initiative last week amid National Recycling Week. The charity wants to promote pre-loved or recycled products as a viable and responsible way to reduce excess landfill within society. Its shops offer gift ideas that can often be overlooked, such as toys, books, homewares, fashion, and accessories. Lifeline’s Local Hub Manager, Norma Argueta, said the campaign aimed to send an important message. “Pre-loved items can bring less stress financially for families, while they are still able to afford something unique and special for

people in their lives,” she said. “By shopping at Lifeline, you never know what exciting things you might find, and you’ll reduce landfill all in one. “It will also support Lifeline’s Crisis Support services at a critical time of the year.” Lifeline General Manager of Retail, Sharon Sawyer, said there were many ways to incorporate pre-loved items into festivities, such as gifts, Christmas decorations, and table settings. “Kris Kringle is also a fun and common activity in the workplace and among family and friends,” she said. “Why not challenge each other this year and make it pre-loved gifts only? You may be surprised at the possibilities that Lifeline shops can offer.” The charity will also host a Re-

Love Toy Week from Monday 2 to Sunday 8 December, with selected stores stocking up on toys. “I’m sure we can all relate to a toy our child has been gifted and hardly touched,” Ms Sawyer added. “Lifeline shops see a huge range of quality toys in great condition coming through their doors, so we

are dedicating a week at the start of December to showcasing these items for shoppers.” If you need support this holiday season, Lifeline’s Crisis Support, 13 11 14, is available 24/7, 365 days a year. Visit lifeline.org.au for more information. - Ben Murphy

news Attack leads to calls for federal funding Local government and community organisations have been urged to apply for funding to create a safer environment after youths attacked a wheelchair-bound woman in Maitland. Vicki Shaw had just finished grocery shopping – one of the few things she could do independently – at Rutherford Aldi when she was reportedly egged and verbally abused by a group of young boys. The former registered nurse, who suffered an earlier spinal injury, was subjected to discriminatory slurs about her weight and disability. “I heard them start yelling out terrible things,” she said. “I ignored them and kept going and then I heard an egg hit the ground behind me and, when I turned around, they were hiding behind the skate park.” Ms Shaw said the attack made

her feel “really, really angry and upset”. “These little mongrels can have the community up in arms,” she said. “They wear it like a badge of honour, they’re laughing in the law’s face. “Something needs to be done, the whole community is suffering.” Paterson Federal MP Meryl Swanson has labelled the attack as “anti-social antics”. “To hear that a group of young people not only verbally abused her but threw eggs at her is appalling, it’s pretty poor behaviour,” she said. “Why do they feel they have the right to abuse anyone?” After hearing about last month’s incident, Ms Swanson reached out to Maitland City Council and suggested it should apply for the Federal Government’s Safer

Communities Fund. “We need to make our community a safer place and this [funding] is a step in the right direction,” she said. The fund provides local councils, community organisations, places of religious worship, schools and pre-schools with grants of up to $1 million for prevention initiatives aimed at reducing crime, anti-social behaviour, violence, and security risks. “I don’t know the details of what [Maitland City Council] will apply for, but I know they’re looking at CCTV cameras and security lighting for the area where the incident took place,” Ms Swanson said. Applications for round five of the grant will close on Tuesday 10 December. Visit business.gov.au for more information. - Elizabeth Symington

Christmas campaign Maitland City Library will take part in Share the Dignity’s Christmas campaign. Share the Dignity is a charity that ensures women have access to personal care products, such as sanitary pads, toothpaste, and hair shampoo. The It’s In The Bag campaign encourages people to donate a bag filled with personal care products to be distributed as a Christmas gift through Share the Dignity’s partner shelters and charitable organisations, where they are given to women and teenage girls experiencing or at risk of homelessness or domestic violence. Bags can be dropped off from 22 November until 6 December at East Maitland, Maitland, Rutherford and Thornton libraries.

news Bikers back on board for popular Christmas tradition “Frock up” in your best costume next month and join in the festivities at the Bikers for Kids Newcastle Toy Run. Wickham Park will come alive with Christmas cheer on Sunday 1 December as a family fun day looks set to create a hive of entertainment. The park is the finish line for the charity motorbike ride, which starts at the Ballast Grounds in Stockton. After 42 years, it is a tradition the bikers and community love. “It’s just a wonderful day,” Event Co-Manager Stephen Meek says. “It is a very special event. “There is just no way to describe the feeling you get when you participate in it, [sometimes you’re] riding with tears streaming down your face.” Each year, the event averages

around 8,000 riders and crowds manage to fill the streets and park. Mr Meek says it is “a massive spectacle because of how many bikes there are”. Inspired by the incredible costumes at last year’s toy run, 2019 will be themed Costumes for Kids. The participating riders will dress themselves and their bikes in costumes to bring joy to the community. “It’s all about putting smiles on kids’ faces,” Mr Meek adds. He hints that this year may attract reindeers, superheroes and even Santa on their bikes. “I have a reputation; I do like to frock up,” he says. At the heart of the event is the toy donations that are collected for the Salvation Army.

news Free legal service offers support for the elderly A new free legal service is benefitting some of the most vulnerable people within society. The Older Persons Legal Clinic was handed a three-year State Government grant totalling $696,000. The grant will focus on increasing access to justice for older people, improving legal outcomes, and reducing the load of legal work on government and community-based free legal services. The clinic, established by the Newcastle Law School at the University of Newcastle, is located within the university’s legal centre in the city’s CBD. Two recent inquiries conducted by the government have identified the need to enhance legal practitioners’ skills in the prevention of, and responses to, financial abuse. The inquiries also found limited access to legal services contributed to the vulnerability of older people. Legal Centre Director Shaun McCarthy said isolation and physical restrictions were significant sources of disempowerment for

many older people. “Older people have particular legal needs and the Older Persons Legal Clinic will offer legal advice, representation, and community education,” Mr McCarthy said. “The clinic supports older people with matters such as wills, powers of attorney, enduring guardianship, mental health law and social security, as well as providing community legal education to older people and legal professionals.” The clinic will also support individuals in other areas, such as family law, tenancy issues and neighbourhood disputes. Common issues older people face include consumer matters, financial abuse, planning ahead for the future, accommodation matters and driver’s licensing. “Many older people live in retirement villages and care facilities where there can be complex legal issues and the need for advocacy to ensure their rights are upheld,” Mr McCarthy added. “Service providers and disputes with management of self-care units and interpretation

of retirement village contracts are increasing legal issues for this demographic,” Mr McCarthy said. The service also provides the university’s law students with a valuable workplace experience that places them within the legal profession during their studies, connecting them with government and private legal professionals, as well as courts, tribunals, and vulnerable clients. It ensures that students are exposed to disadvantaged populations and provides the opportunity to be inspired by local professionals who work to improve legal outcomes and access to justice for those in need. The clinic takes place in Newcastle on Wednesdays at University House (near Civic Park), while a pop-up clinic operates from the ground floor of the Australian Taxation Office building in Gosford on Thursdays. Visit newcastle.edu.au/older-persons-legalclinic for more information or phone 1800 314 792. - Elizabeth Symington

A new masterplan is set to define the future direction for Carrington’s green spaces. There are few neighbourhoods in Newcastle as storied and distinct as Carrington. Defined by Newcastle Harbour and influenced by the harsh prosperity of a working port, Carrington has become one of Newcastle’s most desirable city neighbourhoods. The suburb has undergone significant economic and urban transformation over the years but, despite these changes, it has retained its personality and generous and distinctive open spaces. City of Newcastle is seeking community feedback on these greenspaces and public domains as part of the exhibition of the Carrington Greenspace

Masterplan. The plan aims to provide innovative and active spaces for the community. “[It] lays out the framework for improvement opportunities in relation to Carrington’s greenspaces and, while works identified will need a collaborative funding approach, having a plan that is built upon the needs and priorities of the community will assist in securing funding to deliver specific initiatives in the future,” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said. “Not only are we hoping to improve the amenity and liveability of the suburb by increasing green spaces we can create a cooler, more comfortable town centre in the warmer months.” The community consultation process goes until 22 December.

Firefighter determined to remain on the front line

Armed with oxygen tanks, face masks and jackets, it’s often hard to tell who is fighting the blazes that have torn through more than one million hectares on Australia’s east coast. But one Hunter Valley-based volunteer has gained national and international attention after revealing she’s been fighting the fires across the region while 14 weeks pregnant. Kat Robinson-Williams, who lives on a property at Paxton, near Cessnock, shared a photo on social media before heading off to battle the Taree bushfires. In last week’s Instagram post, the 23-year-old praised her fellow female firefighters and spoke of her determination to help communities in need.

She says the feedback has been largely positive. “There have been a few [people] that have come from a place of concern, which I understand,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “What they don’t know is that I’ve discussed it with my doctors and they’ve cleared me, as long as I’m wearing the correct safety equipment. “You have to wear it regardless of who you are, which I am because why am I any different?” Ms Robinson-Williams’ story spread to The Washington Post and the BBC, while she also made an appearance on Network Ten’s hit show The Project. Despite the increased attention, she says her situation is not unique. “It was just a case of ‘I’m able to

She says the crews on the ground, and affected communities, have been phenomenal in battling the fires. “There’s been 10-metre flame heights, really strong winds, embers flying everywhere – five, 10, 20 metres down the road – and houses and backyards lighting up,” she says. “Honestly, all the crews have been great. “The RFS doesn’t get a lot of credit, so it’s nice for them, as a volunteer service, to get that. “It’s not just the RFS – it is also workplaces who are releasing employees to go to those places as well. “They’ve been told: ‘You are better out there than sitting at your desk, so do what you need to do to help out.’” The RFS stated almost 1,500 firefighters were working to contain the threat of fires in hot and windy conditions as Newcastle

She has been a volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) for more than a decade, with her primary brigade based at Quorrobolong, about 20 minutes from Cessnock. According to Ms RobinsonWilliams, some of the out-ofcontrol blazes that raged across the state had managed to create their own weather systems.

news Club set to celebrate in style This time, members opted to lend a hand to those battling the drought. “It’s such a great day and we’re wanting to share that but, more importantly, a lot of us have friends and family on farms in the Hunter Valley,” Club President Natalie Perfrement said. “We helped the Mark Hughes Foundation last year – he’s a local sportsperson and someone whose cancer was quite unique – and, this year, it was very clear from members that we needed to support friends and family who are doing it tough with the drought.” Each team will compete in a series of heats leading up to the final race. Teams can dress in costumes and prizes will be awarded to the best dressed, in addition to those who place first, second or third. Paddlers and spectators will also be able to enjoy food from the

Newcastle Hunter Dragon Boat Club will celebrate 20 years of paddling on Throsby Creek and Newcastle Harbour with two special events. A club dinner and function on Saturday 8 February will be followed by a Community Dragon Boat Regatta in Carrington on Sunday 16 February. More than 200 competitors, sourced from local community groups, corporates, health services, government departments, friends and family, will take part in the 200-metre race on Throsby Creek. The event aims to raise funds to support Rural Aid and other Hunterbased charities. Last year, the club provided much-needed donations to the Mark Hughes Foundation, which was chosen by the Dragons Abreast squad – a group of paddlers and cancer survivors.

Each vendor will also be donating part of their sales from the day to support Rural Aid. Members regularly compete in regional, state, national, and international competitions. The club recently returned from Masters in Adelaide, where the Dragons Abreast squad brought home the gold. A masterclass from goalkeeper Glen Moss and a fantastic finish from Angus Thurgate handed Newcastle a 1-0 victory over A-League newcomers Western United at the weekend. The Jets came close to opening the scoring in the 31st minute, but an impressive double-save from United’s Filip Kurto denied Nick Fitzgerald and then Jason Hoffman on the follow up. Visitors Newcastle finally took the lead five minutes later when Thurgate linked up impressively with Dimi Petratos. After receiving the ball with his back to goal, Thurgate laid it off to Petratos, who then played a sublime return ball in behind the United defence. Thurgate calmly placed it past

the advancing Kurto to notch his second senior goal and put the Jets in front. The home side created chances in the second period, but it was the brilliance of Jets custodian Moss who kept the Jets in the lead by producing two fantastic saves in the space of 30 seconds. Moss first denied Connor Pain and then tipped over Besart Berisha’s point-blank header from the resulting corner in the 74th minute. He later secured the Jets’ first win of the season by denying Berisha a late equaliser in the 91st minute.

Smoky barbecue spare ribs The Barbecue Guide, New Holland Publishers, $24.99. Available from all good book retailers or online: newhollandpublishers.com Serves: 6-8 2 x 1kg racks ribs 120ml olive oil Rum and barbecue sauce 1 tsp olive oil

Place the ribs in a large, non-metallic dish. Thoroughly combine the rum and barbecue sauce and the oil and liberally brush onto the ribs. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight, turning occasionally.

120ml spiced rum

Take 2 large sheets of heavy-duty foil and place on a work surface. Place a rack of ribs on each. Generously cover both sides of ribs with extra marinade. Wrap into a double-folded parcel, making sure all joins are well sealed to prevent leakage. Carefully place the parcel onto a tray, taking care not to tear the foil. Refrigerate if not cooking immediately.

For the sauce, add the oil, onion and garlic to a small saucepan over medium heat and cook until the onion is transparent. Add all the remaining ingredients, except the rum, and bring to the boil. Simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, then add the rum and stir. Allow to cool. Note : Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.

Prepare the barbecue for direct-heat cooking. Place a wire cake rack on the grill bars to stand 2.5cm above the grill. Place the foil parcels on the rack and cook for 10 minutes on each side, a total of 20 minutes. Move the parcel to a plate. Open the foil and discard. Lift the ribs onto the rack. Continue cooking and brush with extra relish, turning until ribs are well browned and crisp, this should take about 10 minutes.

1 small onion, finely grated 2 garlic cloves, crushed 240ml tomato sauce 20ml soy sauce 1 tsp mustard powder 60g brown sugar

Barbecue bonanza

Enjoy dinner in the garden with these recipes perfect for a summer barbecue.

Cut between the ribs to separate, pile onto a platter and serve immediately. You must eat these as soon as they are cooked otherwise they will become dry and tough.

Supercars event races into city The Newcastle 500 is set to be a super weekend, with three days of action-packed activities on and off the track.

From Friday 22 to Sunday 24 November, the event will provide entertainment for both the young and old.

“This year’s Coates Hire Newcastle 500 has really turned up the dial for entertainment, and we hope fans of all ages have a fantastic time soaking up all the exciting sights and activities that are on offer,” Supercars General Manager of Operations, Kurt Sakzewski, said. Children will have the chance to become Superkids by getting involved in some hands-on, racingthemed Supercars activities. Taking centre stage is an inflatable racetrack for kids to put the pedal to the metal and morph into their favourite race car drivers. Pimped-out carts and bikes adorned in Supercars’ racing red, perfect for kids of all ages to test out their speed and agility, will be on offer. Tabletop games are also available, including the Fast Fan Challenge to test young fans’ speed and reaction skills, and the Pit Stop Challenge for learning speedy tyre changing and mechanical skills.

The Kids Zone will be open over the three days and has already seen great success at the Townsville 400 and Gold Coast 600 events earlier in the year. “Right in the midst of the action, The SuperKids Zone is a fully fenced and secure area,” Sakzewski added. “Designed exclusively for parents and little people to relax, play, and test their racing abilities.” Meanwhile, the event will also become a foodie’s dream, with plenty of food and drink on offer to complement the race-side action. A wide variety of local and national food and beverage vendors will be scattered around fan zones and at local hot spot, The Station, or, as it will be known to racing fans over the Supercars weekend, The Platform. A mix of cuisines will be available to make a great racetrack dish. Visit supercars.com/newcastle for more information about the event. - Elizabeth Symington

A Dickens Christmas

Join the Adamstown Arts for a Christmas with Charles Dickens next month. Hear the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, from A Christmas Carol, and how his Christmas spirit is transformed when three spirits remind him of the true joy of the season. The show is returning following last year’s success and involves readings from Dickens’ classic story. Newcastle actors will take to the stage and their readings will be complemented by musical interludes, with the audience invited to join in with the singing of carols. Pamela Whalan, Claire Williams, Phillip McGrath, Lindsay Carr, Lee Mayne and others will light up the stage, with the entire production carrying on the tradition of a

Dickens Christmas, emphasising family gatherings, seasonal food, dancing and a festive generosity of spirit. The show will be presented at the Adamstown Uniting Church, on the corner of Glebe and Brunker roads in Adamstown, on Saturday 7 December. The Adamstown Pudding Kitchen will also be selling a range of traditional and gourmet puddings during the performance. The show starts at 2pm. Tickets are available at the door; $20 adult, $15 concession, and $10 child. For more information, visit adamstownuca.org.au/arts or phone 4943 5316.

BIBLE PROPHECY EXPLAINS ISRAEL’S EXISTENCE TODAY Within the pages of the wonderful book called the Bible is a prophetic and factual account of the birth and growth of the nation of Israel. This remarkable nation has undergone dispersion, persecution and a miraculous regathering into their ancient homeland, culminating in the formation of the State in 1948.They thrive in the land today despite aggressive neighbors who vow her destruction. Many of her persecutors have come and gone - like Assyria, Babylon, The Romans, Hitler’s 3rd Reich, and other AntiSemitic groups... But Israel remains! They are called “The apple of God’s eye” Zech 2v8, they are a special people because of their faithful forefathers. See Rom 11v 28-29 This free seminar will outline how the Bible explains their remarkable existence, and how Jesus Christ (A Jew) was born in the land of Israel and bought a message of salvation to the world - His message is still relevant today! Why has Israel endured suffering and persecution for so long? Why did Jesus connect salvation with the Jewish people? See John 4v22

Art Mania is a creative community hub that offers you a place to relax, unwind, meet friends and find yourself through art. Easy to say, but do they deliver? The simple answer is yes. Art Mania is about encouraging and supporting anyone who wants to discover the therapeutic benefits of art. When they say everyone, that includes all abilities, whether you are a beginner or returning artist or you have a disability. It is easy to make excuses for not taking that first step. Well, it is far easier to pick up the phone and book yourself in for a class than making up excuses not to. Art Mania works with the belief that it’s all about the technique. No matter what media you are

working with, once you have the technique, you only need your imagination to guide you. As for not having enough time, an Australian-based study, shows that as little as two hours a week of art results in significant improvement in mental wellbeing. Imagine you have the children off at school and you are looking for something you can do for yourself. Why not come and do a class with Art Mania? Two hours with

your hands buried in clay, the physical contact, and the act of feeling something take shape under your fingers. Or imagine watching your ideas taking shape in glass, resin or mosaicking a tile or even an old frying pan. The only thing better than watching a beginner take those first steps to discover they do have creative bones, is being that beginner and learning what potential you haven’t been using.

Karma for a cause

the look

Look and feel good when you use Good X Karma soaps and lip balm. Good X Karma is eight-year-old Novocastrian Xavier Neil’s passion project. It began after Xavier raised a phenomenal amount of money in February for the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. “Earlier this year a friend of my Dad’s and cancer survivor had been treated at a special cancer hospital, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, and she had met some people who run a fundraiser called SurFebruary, where you surf every day in February and raise donations for Lifehouse,” Xavier says. “With heaps of support, including generous donations from my mate Mitch Revs and Murrays Brewing, I was able to raise $12,700

for the month.” Xavier raised the most funds out of any SurFebruary participant, and it sparked a passion within him. “I wanted to do more,” he says. “As Mum and I had been making soaps and lip balms, we

thought we could make heaps of them and sell them and give all the profits to Lifehouse.” So, Good X Karma was born and, with $8,100 of his $20,000 target already donated, they have had a great four months.

The soaps and lip balms are handmade. Xavier says it takes about two days to cure the soaps before they can cut and package them, while the lip balms take a little less; a big batch can be made in a couple of hours. Xavier and his mum make them on the weekends and after school. The project has been widely supported, and Xavier loves giving back to the community. “Dad said that giving is truly a ripple effect and what I love seeing is people wanting to help

me reach my target or start thinking about maybe what they can do to help others,” he says. At $8 each, the profits from the lip balms and soaps are donated. To purchase anything from the Good X Karma range, visit

Topics include relationship to site; design for climate; energy efficient design; solar energy and technology; mud brick; hot water heating; water supply and wetland wastewater treatment; healthy materials and insulation; comfort; minimising maintenance; and how to balance life and building. The tours are for adults-only and cost $20 per person. A reel-to-reel Movies Under the Stars, Away from the Cars will be screened at 8pm on Saturday. It will feature the 1947 Australian classic Bush Christmas, in which a group of children track down rustlers whom they accidentally helped steal their father’s horses.

Tickets cost $12 for adults and $6 for children. Visit trybooking.com/BGHPH to book a tour or trybooking. com/505058 for more on the movie night. in the garden THIS WEEK

Prime time for taller bulbs

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

Gardens have suffered through an unsettled spring heading into summer. Spring has been a mixture of winter, autumn, summer and spring, with drying winds and little rain. With basically only five weeks to Christmas, there is now an urgency to tidy the garden and fertilise beds for colour display. Dig in cow manure and wait at least one week before planting and perhaps plant more advanced annuals – red and white being the popular Christmas colours. November is a fabulous month for taller growing bulbs, which I enjoy more than the early spring bulbs. I love hippeastrums, particularly

lily, thankfully, the arum lily has shaken off this title and become immensely popular. Arums, more correctly called Zantedeshia, require a damp situation with fairly rich soil, growing lushly green. If planted in semi-shade, they will grow in pots and even in ponds. The November garden also begins to yield ripening tomatoes – apply a side dressing of Organic Life and keep an eye out for wilt, which is caused by Fusarium, Verticilium or Bacterial Wilts. Bronzed or spotted wilt is the worst disease of early tomatoes. It does help if tomatoes are planted late in November or December when the danger of

a new pink I recently planted, which is now rewarding with blooms, whereas some of my pink and whites have finished for this season. One of my favourites are watsonia, which develop into large clumps growing to 120 centimetres tall. Their strap-like foliage bears even taller flower spikes in white, pink, salmon and red, which are ideal for cutting in late spring when other flowers may be scarce. Plants can be divided after the foliage dies in late summer or early autumn – bulbs should be planted out in autumn and, if you don’t have a sharing friend, The Diggers Club in Victoria would be a stockist. Known for decades as the funeral

• Deadhead roses after their first spring flush and boost new growth with a handful of blood and bone. • Apply sulphate of potash to passionfruit and mangoes to encourage fruit growth and retention. • Mulch azaleas with peat moss after applying a slow release fertiliser.

spotted wilt has lessened. Then, of course, there is fruit fly to deal with. Hard to combat, particularly in suburban areas, where fruit can be left to rot under trees, creating a greater production of this pest next season. Small fruiting tomatoes don’t seem to be as prone to fruit fly attack.

Step One: Make a bushfire survival plan Who are you putting at risk? Will you cope in a bushfire situation? Are you able to prepare your property? You can start by answering these questions on the website myfireplan.com.au before moving on to the next stage.

Step Two: Prepare Trim – Trim overhanging trees and shrubs. This can help to stop the fire spreading to your home. Mow – Mow grass and remove the cuttings. Have a cleared area around your home.

How fireproof is your plan? Most people have a plan for what they will do during a bushfire. Unfortunately, not every plan will withstand the test of a bushfire. Take five minutes to improve or make a plan that will give your property, your family and yourself the best chance of survival should you be threatened by a bushfire.

Now in le t Newcas

Remove – Remove material that can burn around your home, such as door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, paint, outdoor furniture. Clear – Clear and remove all the debris and leaves from the gutters surrounding your home. Burning embers can set your home on fire. Prepare – Prepare a sturdy hose or hoses that will reach all around your home. Make sure you’ve got a reliable source of water.

Bright Home

Step Three: Know the bushfire alert levels If there is a fire in your area you will find its alert level on the NSW RFS website, on the radio, and in the ‘Fires Near Me’ app. You need to keep track of the alert level so you know what you should do.

Step Four: Keep key information In a bush fire, it’s important that you stay up to date on conditions in your area. The NSW Rural Fire Service strongly advises saving these numbers, links, and apps now. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000). For information on a bushfire, call the Bush Fire Information Line on 1800 NSW RFS (1800 679 737). The NSW RFS website can be found via rfs.nsw.gov.au for general information and, for fire danger ratings, go to rfs.nsw. gov.au/fdr or download the free ‘Fires Near Me’ smartphone app.

Star Wars: Episode VIII Saturday, NBN, 7pm, M (2017)

Thor: Ragnarok Tuesday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (2017)

The second instalment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), sees the sci-fi franchise continue its unstoppable legacy. In this chapter, Rey (Daisy Ridley, above) seeks out the guidance of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) as her allies in the Resistance find themselves on the run from the resurgent First Order after the destruction of the New Republic’s capital.

Friday

pick of the week With Thor: Ragnarok, New Zealand director Taika Waititi (Boy) brings an abundance of fun and humour to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The franchise’s resident hammer-wielder, played by Chris Hemsworth (pictured) finds himself banished to a garbage planet called Sakaar after his long-lost sister Hela (Cate Blanchett) returns. This third (and probably best) Thor movie is mass entertainment at its best.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Saturday, PRIME7, 9pm, M (2016) Those who despaired at the end of the Harry Potter series need not have worried – there’s plenty of life left in JK Rowling’s universe of witchcraft and wizardry. This spin-off is a prequel of sorts and the first in a series of five. Set 70 years before Harry discovered the truth about his parents, it moves the action to America and stars Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne (pictured) as Newt Scamander, author of a book about magical creatures, who finds himself caught up in a conflict between the wizarding community and the No-Majs (American for Muggles).

The emotional and receptive moon is in control of Miley’s affairs in 2020; it’s a good year for her to realign herself with her relationships, her family and her domestic life generally. It’s also an important time for her to work on improving her character and mindset. Miley will have to try hard to stay an on even keel emotionally during 2020, otherwise her feelings will sometimes get the better of her. If she makes plans and decisions impulsively, she won’t achieve her best results.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The new moon on the 26th indicates a fun and social time lies ahead. A delightful and spontaneous get together will be fun for all. Vivid dreams, learning to meditate, enjoying art, music, and dancing will inspire you. Enjoying the water’s edge or going sailing will also be therapeutic.

You may become part of a new group of friends or colleagues. If you are single, one of them may come to mean something special to you in the future. The new moon on the 26th indicates tempestuous romantic vibes and reunions will stir tender, nostalgic feelings.

The new moon on the 26th indicates there will be numerous financial transactions to attend to and unusual purchases. Around the 27th you’ll start to feel any disruptions settling down and things will begin to fall into place. A special loved one will be supportive if things get stressful.

This week is an ideal time to get in touch with your inner feelings, because the further away you drift from your true centre, the less content and happy you are likely to feel. The new moon on the 26th indicates spontaneous fun and captivating social companions.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

The new moon on the 26th indicates good fortune on the job. An ambitious undertaking is likely to gather momentum. If you’re feeling confused by a romantic relationship, the more you analyse this situation the less you’re going to know. Taking a break could be a sensible option.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

With Mercury retrograde, encounters with others are fraught with misunderstanding, dates may be cancelled at the last minute and sudden partings are likely. You may have unconsciously attracted the changes you are experiencing. The new moon on the 26th indicates a thrilling accomplishment and strong advancement on the job.

The new moon on the 26th ushers in an inspiring exchange with a boss or superior. If you’ve been experiencing difficulties or feeling unwell, your energy starts to return and your ability to let go of damaging memories is strengthened by contact with your true self.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The new moon on the 26th brings good news financially and creates a romantic mood. You may be concerned about your financial or emotional status. However this manifests itself, it indicates an inner stagnant situation which you’re challenged to confront, and by consciously accepting it, you will break free!

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT The new moon on the 26th heralds a thrilling success or breakthrough along with an interesting business or work offer. With Mercury retrograde, issues of control, insecurity and jealousy are likely to arise. Be careful of destroying a relationship through possessive behaviour or an inability to trust your partner.

The new moon on the 26th brings a rush of social invitations and plans along with an unusual or tempting offer. Your romantic relationships will be on your mind; you will reflect on the past, analyse events and the interaction between you and your partner and gain fresh insights.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC The new moon on the 26th indicates a need to take care of your energy as there will be hectic pressures with work or personal commitments. Think through any ideas before bringing them to fruition. Your partner’s advice is important; listen closely as they are looking out for you.

Christmas

AQUARIUS: 21 JAN – 19 FEB

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR The new moon on the 26th sees a prestigious social gathering where you will meet charming new people. If you’re single, you need to be open to meeting someone new – you might be pleasantly surprised! With the sun in Scorpio, your ability to assert yourself is on the rise.

BOOTCAMP I’ve been a keen exerciser all my life. My favourite exercise format is bootcamp – I love the company and variety. Mostly, I like the friendly competition with my bootcamp buddies. They always push me to go harder, faster and heavier (not to mention the social morning coffee that follows).

WALKING THE DOG My morning ritual is a five-kilometre walk/ run along the picturesque Williams River with my miniature cattle dog named Jessie. This is my protected time to get in contact with nature, clear my mind, prepare for the day ahead, and also get my step count up.

My favourite things Susan Goode

FAMILY

TROG CANCER RESEARCH CHIEF EXECUTIVE

As the Chief Executive of TROG Cancer Research, Susan Goode oversees the strategic direction of the Newcastle founded and based organisation that has impacted lives across Australia and globally. Susan is passionate about empowering the cancer research community to create innovations and progressive approaches to treat and support cancer patients through radiation therapy. Now celebrating its 30th year, TROG Cancer Research has become an icon of success in the Newcastle medical community, and many of the clinical trials conducted by the organisation have led to more effective ways to maintain quality of life and improve outcomes for cancer patients around the world. Susan grew up in the rural community of Albury and moved to Newcastle 18 years ago to pursue her passion for research. She has more than 12 years’ experience in clinical and health services research. Susan had previously been providing strategic support to the Hunter New England Clinical Cancer Research Network. 62

LIVE SPORT I’ve always been passionate about sport, whether doing it myself, supporting my children in their sporting endeavours or watching national level competitive sport. I love to watch live sports including tennis, cricket and rugby. You might also see me trackside at the Newcastle Supercars races.

I have a close-knit family and most of our free time involves having adventures together. Whether that is hiking up an active volcano in Vanuatu, snorkelling with snapper at Nelson Bay, or exploring the depths of a cave in the Barrington Tops.

WATER SPORTS One of my favourite hobbies is all things water sport; from fishing and kayaking, to stand-up paddle boarding and water skiing. I love the freedom of being on the water, the opportunity to connect with nature, and the sense of accomplishment when I learn a new skill.
