This week... From the editor My colleagues and I have been debating the origins of Halloween and sharing ghost stories this week ahead of the annual event on 31 October. Whether you’re a believer or not, there’s no denying that it is becoming more universal in its appeal. Some people may think it is just another American-led excuse for overindulgence and runaway consumerism (I must admit to being one of these initially, although I’ve come to embrace the former). However, many Halloween traditions are actually attributed to Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain. It contained much of the traditional pagan practices, before being adopted in 19th Century America through Irish immigrants. We’ve included a spooky Halloween recipe on our Taste page, as well as 13 DIY kids costumes in The Look for those of you who wish to join in. On a more serious note, we’ve featured one of Cancer Council NSW’s major fundraisers, Relay for Life, on this week’s cover. We chat to breast cancer survivor Danielle Foster, who was diagnosed with the illness at the age of 26, about her journey and role in this year’s event. You’ll find that story on page 10.

news Positive approach to parking woes Parking problems and pedestrian safety have long plagued the Cardiff CBD, but business leaders are determined to promote positive change. Prominent business owner Max McCorkell says the community will meet next week to discuss the ongoing issue. “There has been a lot of complaining but unless you do something about it, nothing is going to change – that’s the whole reason behind this meeting,” he says. Northlakes Chamber of Commerce and the Cardiff Business and Industry Group will host the meeting at Cardiff RSL from 6pm on Monday 28 October. Mr McCorkell says the parking problem has only been getting worse. He believes the state government needs to start investing money to fix the issue, while business leaders are also working with Lake Macquarie City Council. “We want to get the government to build a multi-level parking space, maybe two, because that’s what it will take to fix the problem,” he says. “That is where [Independent MP for Lake

Macquarie] Greg Piper and [Wallsend state MP] Sonia Hornery come in.” In February, Mr Piper pushed for new multilevel parking to be built at Morisset, Cardiff and Fassifern train stations. “I had concept designs for Morisset drawn up because I wanted to show the state government and the local community what could be done,” Mr Piper said at the time. “While I believe the best potential is on the Sydney-bound side of the station, a car park on the Morisset township side could incorporate a pedestrian bridge to the shops. “We’re already seeing significant problems at Cardiff, too, where all-day commuters park out residential streets because there is no adequate parking near the station.” According to Mr McCorkell, this problem has shown no sign of relenting. “There was the football and races in Sydney last weekend – it was over parked again and there was no parking available in town,” he says. “These are issues that we can’t fix, but they can.”

Lake Macquarie City Council is in the early stages of developing a transport management plan for Cardiff as part of its city-wide parking strategy. The plan aims to expand transport choices with safer and more convenient walking, cycling and public transit options; improve availability of parking; and support and maintain productive use of the business area in the town centre. It also seeks to determine whether the state government can provide more parking facilities at Cardiff Station. news State government bans bikes on Scott Street Cyclists have labelled a state government ban from riding on one of the main streets in Newcastle’s CBD as a knee-jerk reaction. NSW Centre for Road Safety’s Executive Director, Bernard Carlon, announced last week cyclists would no longer be allowed to ride on the 340-metre mixed running section of the Newcastle Light Rail along Scott Street. The decision came after a safety review was launched into the tragic death of local cyclist Danny Egan in July. The review examined crash statistics, road user behaviour, and existing road safety mechanisms. Transport for NSW claims it consulted with stakeholders, including cycling groups and NSW

Police. Newcastle-based cyclist and bike shop owner Bernard Hockings believed it was a lazy response, claiming the government had been aware of the risks since the planning stages of the light rail. “It’s just a symptom of a bigger problem,” he said. “We warned [them] that this was extremely dangerous, and they did nothing.” The government provided a shared pathway where cyclists could avoid riding on the light rail, but Mr Hockings alleged it did not comply with Australian standards. “We are crossing multiple driveways and that is an accident waiting to happen because they have no sight line, they cannot see someone on the path as they reverse out of their driveways,” he

said. “They’ve just transferred the problem from here to there.” Mr Hockings added that, even as an experienced cyclist, crossing the tram tracks took a lot of skill and could be “quite scary”. He claimed there should be an

alternative path for cyclists who want a safer route. “You have to put yourself in front of traffic and make sure that they don’t try to pass you as you negotiate that manoeuvre,” he said. Continued on page 14

news Educators call for calm as students mark milestone West Wallsend High School Principal Fiona Walsh says “there is light at the end of the tunnel” as students sit their HSC exams across the state. Year 12 students completed their first exam, English Studies or English Paper One, last week, with the final tests, Design and Technology and Textiles and Design, marked down for Monday 11 November. While she knows her pupils are ready, Dr Walsh encourages them to try not to stress during this time and to put in as much effort as they can. “They have risen to every challenge and they’ve faced every obstacle; they’ve exceeded my expectations,” she says. “While studying for the exams,

focus on what you don’t know. “Look at what you do know and then focus on a few key aspects of each subject that you need to work a little bit more on. “My second tip is to know the syllabus document. “The exams are written from the syllabus; it will be helpful if you understand it.” Some other tips from the state government’s Department of Education include: reading the entire paper, making notes, starting with an easy question, looking for key words, knowing what the question requires, and never leaving an exam early. Dr Walsh adds the HSC is important, but believes its value is dependent on the student’s future aspirations.

It is a belief shared by renowned education expert, University of Newcastle professor John Fischetti, who advises students to “have confidence to stay in the moment”. “Don’t rush; take your time and be calm,” he says. “If it doesn’t work out, it will be okay. The HSC is the beginning, not the end. “It is a key that will open a door, but there are other keys.” Both Dr Walsh and Professor Fischetti say that family support is

vital during this time. “Taking it easy and being positive is crucial – try to be flexible and understanding,” Professor Fischetti says. Help – came as a relief. “The first thing was cleaning, and, with chemo, it destroys you from the inside out, so you’ve got no energy,” Ms Foster said. “My mum and dad came and helped as much as possible but the biggest thing for us was the Cancer Council’s cleaning service. “It was four ladies who would come every two weeks during my treatment and the house was like brand new.” After going through treatment, Ms Foster said she was determined to give back to the community, as well as the Cancer Council. Now aged 31, she works as the charity’s Community Relations Coordinator for the Hunter Region and is involved in organising Relay for Life Newcastle/Lake Macquarie. Friends, families, schools and colleagues are encouraged

It was a diagnosis that turned her whole world upside down. When Danielle Foster was told she had breast cancer, the then 26-year-old and her husband had just bought their first home. “I think we were living in it for four months when I was diagnosed,” she said. “He works in the mines, so he travels a lot and does a lot of long hours. “My family and his family wanted to keep him on track, get him to keep going to work, and have as much of a normal life as possible.” Danielle’s treatment saw her undergo chemotherapy, radiation, a mastectomy, and a full breast reconstruction. news Support for parents amid juggling act

Rachael Leonard says looking after twins is “like running a marathon that never ends”. With three sons, four-and-ahalf-year-old Henry and two-and-ahalf-year-old twins, Jack and Hugo, Rachael knows the highs and lows of parenting. “It is loud, busy and very unpredictable,” she says. “They’re the first words that come to mind.” When Rachael fell pregnant with twins, her family was incredibly excited. She had always wanted more than two children, but all the logistical aspects of it proved daunting. So, following a recommendation from her obstetrician, Rachael decided to join the Newcastle Multiple Birth Club. The club, which celebrated

its 50th birthday this year, is the longest running multiple birth club in Australia. It provides people with a place to come together, share advice, and gain support. “Everyone [in the club] knows what it’s like – it’s all very family orientated and inclusive,” Rachael says. “I’ve been lucky in that I have made lifelong friends.” She believes a great aspect of the club is talking to people with older multiples because you can see they have come out the other side. “People are so honest; we are going through the exact same thing,” she says. “We’ve all struggled to get out of the house, and we’re all worried about what we are going to do if our two babies start screaming when we are out.

“So, just knowing that there are other people that are in it with you makes it really reassuring.” Rachael has become a volunteer since joining the club, taking up the role of co-coordinator of social and fundraising. “It’s been really good for my mental health to get engaged in work and the business side of things,” she adds. The club will now host the 2019 Australian Multiple Birth Association National Convention at Noah’s On The Beach, Newcastle. The convention, which takes place from 25 to 27 October, focuses on how to govern and sustain support services for families with twins, triplets, and more. From page 6 “You have to be very confident to do that.” According to Mr Hockings, there is little point in focusing on what the government should have done but there is value in having a conversation because active transport is a vital part of the future of the city. “I think the value in pointing out the current short comings is that the state government has to acknowledge their mistakes, adopt some humility and start talking and working with local stakeholders to fix the problems we are left with,” he said. Mr Hockings said that, moving forward, the government needed to create an environment where all forms of transport were able to thrive. “Where you have that good mix of public transport, good car access as well as safe cycleways

and pleasant street scapes for pedestrians, that’s when you’ve got a great environment,” he said. “If people feel safe, they will ride.” As part of the safety review, Transport for NSW states it will investigate new technologies that may be trialled in the future to help protect cyclists when they interact with light rail networks. It promises to continue its work with the City of Newcastle in a bid to identify an appropriate east-west cycle route through the city. New warning signage and supporting road markings will also be installed along the light rail network, which aim to assist bike riders to cross the tracks at a safe angle. Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said the opening of the dog park was fantastic for the city. “The community’s input has been reflected in the unique way the park has been constructed, with special areas for both large and small dogs to play in comfort,” he said. “I’m thrilled with this space and know it will be a vibrant and popular place for people and their pets to be active and play outside.” Newcastle has one of the highest rates of dog ownership in the state, with more than 44,000 registered dogs calling the city home. The park has areas for both small and large dogs to enjoy, with shelters, tables and dog bubblers to ensure comfort for all. The existing off-leash area at the reserve’s lower level will be retained, providing an overflow from the fenced area.

Lake Macquarie City Council has partnered with local not-for-profit community service provider Allambi Care to adopt an innovative approach to renewable energy. Members of the community invested $250 to $1,000 in the project through the member-owned Pingala Co-operative. The funds raised are going towards installing solar technology at Allambi Care’s Charlestown headquarters. It will help reduce the environmental footprint and energy costs for the organisation. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the council came on board to promote renewable energy options in the city. “We want more renewable energy in Lake Macquarie,” she said. “We’ve got greenhouse gas emission targets and we need to get more solar panels on commercial and residential properties.” A community celebration is planned for Sunday 27 October at Allambi Care (28 Fraser Parade, Charlestown) to mark the project’s completion, with food, drink and entertainment provided.

Chronic low back pain affects one in six Australians and is a leading cause of disability in Australia. Living with pain has a huge impact on an individual’s health, and people who suffer lower back pain don’t always know how to access help. Hunter New England Population Health’s musculoskeletal health team is working with University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute to change how people think about their back pain and treatment options. They have launched a collaborative trial with John Hunter Hospital, which is called the HeLP Program for Low Back Pain. It will focus on many aspects of a participant’s health and will consider the individual’s pain in conjunction with their overall health. The HeLP program is open to people who have had low back pain for more than three months and struggle with weight, activity smoking, or healthy eating. Superboats roar on lake More than 30,000 people lined Lake Macquarie’s foreshore over the weekend for the annual Lake Macquarie Superboats. The two-day event featured action on and off the water, with round three of the 2019 Offshore Superboat Championships comprising of one race on Saturday, and two more on Sunday. On-water action took a dramatic

turn on Saturday, with a crash forcing the day’s only race to be abandoned. The Team 88 Offshore vessel flipped on a turn after just two laps, however, no one was injured in the incident and the boat was later recovered. After Sunday’s two races, team Dynamic Racing took out the Supercat Extreme class, while TCR

Offshore took out the Supercat Outboard class. Lake Macquarie driver Les Binkin, racing for team SUV Simrad, came second. Jet-ski racing from Eleebana included short and long-course competitions. Offshore Superboat Club President Conn Saloumidis said Lake Macquarie was the number one fixture on the Superboats calendar. “All the teams love coming here,” Saloumidis said. “The conditions are perfect and the crowd gets behind the event so well – it’s awesome.” The weekend included markets, a vintage car display and licensed bars at Warners Bay, aerobatic displays over the lake, a Show and Shine contest and food and wine festival at Speers Point Park, and free water sports at Marmong Point. It also featured a charity Poker Run, with vessels cruising in convoy from Marmong Point to Trinity Point to raise money for medical research.

Record field A record field of more than 1,500 runners of all ages and abilities covered a total of 18,000 kilometres during the annual Fernleigh 15 at the weekend. One of the region’s premier middle-distance runners, Guy Walters, made the most out of a stronger-than-expected headwind on Sunday, crossing the line first in a time of 47.14 – one minute outside the race record. Coming in second was last year’s winner, Hamish Wallace, in a time of 47.55, while Connor Stevenson finished third. In the women’s event, it was 19-year-old Rose Davies who crossed first in a time of 54.22, more than three-and-a-half minutes ahead of runner-up Joasia Zakrzewski, 58.44. From Newcastle to London and back It’s London, 1988, and Simone Burbeck’s life appears perfect. She lives in a mansion with her perfect husband and children and her life is a merry-go-round of expensive renovations, dinner parties, and school fundraisers. However, there is just one problem: it’s all lies. When her husband has a fatal heart attack in a disastrous session with a prostitute, Simone becomes broke, homeless and a social outcast. With no other options and two teenage children to look after, she is forced to return to her family home in Newcastle, Australia. back in. Frayed is an Australian and British television comedy drama series on ABC TV and Sky UK. Writer and lead actress, Sarah Kendall, was born and raised in Newcastle. The world of Frayed is the one of her childhood. She described it as a time where long stretches of beautiful coastland were lined with weatherboard shacks, old miners' cottages and council housing – a narrow world of quiet streets and corner shops, in which everyone knew each other. “I lived in Newcastle for 18 years and I’ve been in London for 19 years,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “They are two very different worlds that I’ve lived in. A library of items, where people can borrow instead of buying products, will celebrate its move to a new location, as well as a year of operation, during a family-friendly event this weekend. The Share Shop loans a range of infrequently used objects, such as camping and catering equipment, tools, board games, and party supplies. More than 250 items have been donated to the inventory by the Newcastle community. The goal is to reduce waste and stop useful products ending up as landfill, while borrowing can also provide an opportunity to test

equipment before investing in them. As a not-for-profit, The Share Shop encourages participants to join online for an annual membership of $52; browse and reserve things; and then come and pick them up at specified times. Its special event, which takes place from 12pm this Saturday 26 October at Shed 1, Pachamama House, Hamilton, will also serve as a fundraiser to enable the shop to continue offering low memberships. Have you been struggling to make a decision about your 2019 Halloween look, or simply lost track of time? Newcastle Weekly journalist Elizabeth Symington shares 13 easy homemade kids’ costumes for you to try. Ghost A classic. All you need is a white sheet or blanket and scissors to cut out some eye holes or a texter to draw on some facial features. (This one also works for dogs – just cut out an extra hole for their snout).

‘80s

Choose the colour of cat you want to be, wear clothes in this colour, cut out some ears and attach to a headband and draw some whiskers on your face. This idea would also work for some other animals, like a mouse.

Buy a bright coloured leotard, tights, some sweat bands and leg warmers, put them all together and you will look like you have come straight from the ‘80s.

Superhero in disguise Choose a superhero and dress in regular clothing; just pretend that you’re off duty or in disguise waiting to catch out a villain.

Insect deterrent plants go hand in hand with organic products The heat is coming, so mulching and fertilising is necessary. Many more gardeners are introducing organic gardening when planting out vegetables and herbs. I need to remind gardeners considering organic gardening that it means not using any chemicals or man-made products and those who choose to follow this path can avail themselves of numerous offerings that have the totally organic certificate. Amongst other products is Bounceback, which is a slow release product. It is safe to use across the garden for fertilising. Mulch with organic sugar cane mulch to hold in moisture completes the organic garden. Insect deterrent plants go hand in hand with the organic products but trust me one plant won't do the job. For example: one chive plant will hardly deter aphids from a bed of roses. Therefore, insect repellent plants will need to be planted enmasse, in companionship with

John Lasseter’s landmark effort won the hearts of kids and parents easily. Based on the premise that toys have their own lives when their owners are away, top of the toy box tree is Sheriff Woody (pictured, voiced by Tom Hanks). However, his authority comes under threat from the newest toy on the block – Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) – who believes he really is an astronaut.

Paddington (pictured, voiced by Ben Whishaw) is happily settled with the Brown family, but is eager to buy the perfect present for his Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday. Hugh Grant plays the devilish villain caught up in his own sense of self-importance, and with a surprising turn from Brendan Gleeson and the usual cast of characters, the film is a sheer delight from start to finish.

MY FAMILY We have always been a close family but when Emma was diagnosed with leukemia, our family closed ranks and provided the support we needed. Our goal was to get Emma better and go to Queensland so Emma could meet the dolphins. Thankfully, in March 2018, Emma got her wish and we all went on holidays and stayed at Sea World Resort.

When my niece Emma (who was two years old at the time) was first diagnosed with ALL on the 6 January 2014, our world fell apart. Then, when she relapsed with only four weeks of her twoyear treatment left, our world fell apart again. Emma needed a bone marrow transplant, and thankfully her older brother Noah was a match.

Nicole Gerrard ALL 4 ONE; ALL 4 LOVE PRESIDENT

Nicole Gerrard is a mum, student, charity president, and so much more. In 2017, Nicole and her family started a charity called All 4 One; All 4 Love in dedication to her niece Emma’s battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The charity’s name is a play on words – Emma had ALL and relapsed when she was four years old, with only four weeks of treatment to go. The charity aims to provide support and services for children undergoing treatment for leukemia and other cancers (or suffering from a non-infectious long-term illness) that result in severe immune deficiency, organ transplant or isolation. Nicole has also been working in the Environmental Planning and Assessment sector since completing her degree in 2001 and is currently halfway through her Master’s in Environmental Law with the University of Newcastle. 54

MY KIDS Being a mother is one of the most important and hardest jobs and I am very lucky to have been blessed with six sons, one stepdaughter and a beautiful granddaughter. My kids are very good at keeping me grounded.
