This week... From the editor With this beautiful spring weather comes allergies and brutal magpie attacks (both of which I have succumbed to in the past month). I temporarily retreated to the safety of my house but, when I decided to venture out again, it was nice to see so many people enjoying the sunshine – cyclists embarking on a morning ride, families picnicking by the river, or, in my case, playing backyard cricket, eating cake and consuming a couple of beverages. A meeting with our three cover stars – mum Kirsty and her children Xander and Charlotte – this week reinforced, to me, the pleasure we can get in these little things. As the photographer and I set up to do the cover shoot on another fine morning at Civic Park, we needed to be aware of Xander’s sensitivity to the light. Xander was diagnosed with oculocutaneous albinism, a condition characterised by a lack of pigmentation in hair, skin and eyes, which resulted in vision impairment, as well as sensory processing, anxiety, and autism. He often doesn’t handle daylight well yet, here he was, enjoying running around the park, reading the cenotaph, and playing with his sister. As Kirsty told me: “There’s no deficit or disorder – there is a diagnosis, but that should just open up understanding.”

news Race to help sick children Living in a bubble: it’s how Boolaroo resident Nicole Gerrard described her family’s life when niece Emma Blundell received a shock diagnosis at the age of two. Doctors confirmed the presence of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in Emma’s bone marrow and she underwent intense chemotherapy. Two years later, in 2015, Emma relapsed, with the leukemia cells discovered in her central nervous system. She endured “complication after complication” and spent 70 days straight in John Hunter Hospital. When Emma was confined to her home to undergo further treatment, Mrs Gerrard decided to set up a charity called All 4 One; All 4 Love. It is 100% volunteer-run and all money raised helps kids with

One of the charity’s main events, the Blow Up Boat On Lake (BUBOL) Race, will take place at Teralba Amateur Sailing Club on Sunday 3 November from 10am. Mrs Gerrard said the BUBOL race simply aimed to put a smile on children’s faces. “For many years, we were in a bubble looking out; that was the theme in the beginning and how BUBOL came about,” she said. “With the first race, I was trying to think – if a child was staying at home and their immune [system] was compromised, they could come out on a boat or sit at the end of a park. “It was an event that Emma, who was just coming out of isolation, could come to and get out of the

news Erosion claims childcare centre It was a sad day for Stockton as the effects of erosion became all too real. The community has lost its only childcare centre, with the demolition of the Mission Australia Early Learning Centre beginning over the October long weekend. “A contractor is expected to complete the demolition of the early learning centre by the end of the month,” a City of Newcastle spokesperson said this week. “The site will remain fenced off until the City can safely re-instate the area to the north of the Mitchell Street seawall.” Stockton resident Lucas Gresham believes the demolition serves as a harsh reminder that something needs to be done about the erosion. “It’s a blatant punch in the face,” he said. “This didn’t need to happen.” Gresham and other residents are furious, stating the demolition has affected so many families. The Barrie Crescent-based site was the only childcare centre in town, with about 70 children attending each day.

“All the young kids have been completely pulled apart,” Gresham said. Mr Gresham adds children have either been scattered and sent to different centres within the surrounding areas, or parents are left to rely on other family members to care for their children and fill the void. Despite the loss of the centre, City of Newcastle states it is working on solutions for Stockton Beach. “In consultation with the Department of Planning, Industry & Environment, we are investigating options for sand nourishment at Stockton and assessing all short and longterm solutions to safeguard the beach,” its spokesperson said. As an emergency measure, the City has placed sandbags at Griffiths Road and Stone Street in front of the eroded dune, restored beach access near Lexie’s café, and cleared the debris from the beach front. However, Mr Gresham says Stockton residents are sick of “band-aid fixes” and want long-term solutions.

Demolition works begin at the Mission Australia Early Learning Centre in Stockton earlier this month.

He claims the community will be lost if the City and state government does not act quickly. “We are calling on them to act in accordance to what needs to be done,” he said. “The erosion is not slowing down and, without action, it will continue to have devastating effects. “We are facing a major environmental catastrophe.” - Elizabeth Symington

Women from all corners of Australia are reclaiming the night, saying no to violence against women and children and yes to healthy relationships. This Friday 25 October, join in on this global movement at a Reclaim the Night march. Often, women feel afraid to go out alone at night and the voices behind Reclaim the Night want to make change to create an environment where females feel safe and free to go about their lives. “It’s about having conversations and opening up and educating people on what needs to change,” Carrie’s Place Homelessness and Domestic Violence Service Inc member, Reanna Cunningham, said. According to Destroy the Joint – a national foundation for women – 44 females have lost their lives to domestic violence in 2019, while women who have survived acts of violence are at an increased risk of suffering from depression and anxiety or experiencing homelessness and financial strain. This year alone, the Newcastle Sexual Assault service confirms there have been 125 women and children in crisis across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter and 548 females, of all ages, have made intake enquiries in Newcastle for sexual assaults. The Reclaim the Night march

demands justice for survivors, highlights these shocking statistics, and occurs on the last Friday of October every year, dating all the way back to the late 1970s. “It started because there had been a whole influx of sexual assault against women in a short period of time and the police recommendations were to put a women’s curfew in place to stop the violence, victimising the victims,” Lake Macquarie Domestic Violence committee member, Louise Hawkins, said. Three marches are set to take place across the Hunter Region. In Newcastle, women will gather at Gregson Park, Hamilton, from 5.30pm, with men encouraged to attend and show their support. A gathering is also scheduled at The Esplanade, Warners Bay, from 6pm; as well as at the Seat of Remembrance at Lorn Park, near Maitland’s CBD, from 5.30pm. Newcastle Domestic Violence committee member Meighan Jenkins said that, to create a safe environment, individuals needed to be held accountable by everyone, not just women. “We really need men to call each other out as well, like our brothers, fathers and partners,” she said. “When they hear something that is disrespectful towards women, call it out.” - Elizabeth Symington

news Campaign looks to uncover region’s best water savers A new campaign will challenge local families to reduce their weekly water usage. With the Lower Hunter on water restrictions for the first time in 25 years, ABC Newcastle and Hunter Water have joined forces to develop the Water Warriors initiative. It will promote conserving water and look at what restrictions mean for residents. Families from across the Hunter are invited to enter the competition, with four to be selected to take part in the challenge. Hunter Water will then monitor the families’ water metres to track how much water they are saving, and, at the end of the challenge, the family who saves the most will win the competition. The winning family is set to

receive a $10,000 water tank, while the runner-up will snare a water efficiency kit, and third place will take home a $500 gift card. The fourth prize consists of a tour of the reservoir and an ABC pack. “The campaign will raise awareness and give people watersaving tips,” ABC Newcastle Chief of Staff, Lucia Hill, said. “It’s all about empowering and educating people to make positive changes and be water warriors all the time. “Water is our most precious resource and, when you live in a coastal area, sometimes you take it for granted. “The responsibility to save water is with everyone. “We need to all work together to not waste water.”

If families make small changes, they can save a lot of water. Some tips include not running your tap while you brush your teeth, having shorter showers, and using a bucket to wash your car. Hunter Water also recommends repairing internal leaks, such as dripping taps or leaking toilets, as quickly as possible. As part of level one restrictions, lawns and gardens must be watered using a hand-held hose before 10am and after 4pm if fitted with a trigger

nozzle; and existing private pools need to be topped up with a trigger nozzle or device that can be turned off instantly. Entries for the Water Warriors competition will open on Monday 21 October and the challenge will start on Monday 11 November. The winners will be announced in early December. cover story Count Us In Festival helps to break down barriers Kirsty Russell knows being a parent or carer for a child with special needs can be difficult. Her first-born, Xander, was diagnosed with oculocutaneous albinism, a condition characterised by a lack of pigmentation in hair, skin and eyes, as well as autism, anxiety and sensory processing. Daughter Charlotte received diagnoses of sensory processing and anxiety, while she was also deemed on the autism spectrum. “It was difficult from the start,” Mrs Russell told Newcastle Weekly. “When my son was born, I already had no idea how to be a parent and now suddenly I have a child who, at the age of 11 weeks, received a diagnosis that changed all of our lives. “Dealing with that was difficult

because there was a whole lot of uncertainty. “I didn’t know for the first four years or so what he could actually see; I didn’t know if he could go to a mainstream school. “You are dealing with those uncertainties and you’re already a new parent and uncertain yourself. “We tried to see it positively and we tried to give him, and our daughter, as many opportunities as we could.” Mrs Russell said she had to come to terms with her own expectations and assumptions about disability and parenting, which proved to be “as big a journey” as it was to look after Xander and Charlotte, now aged 15 and 14. In 2011, Mrs Russell began her work as a special needs’ parenting

advocate, writing a blog that went on to receive recognition for its quality advice and genuine support. She will now share her story during a presentation called Positive Special Needs Parenting: Finding Positivity and Support as a Carer. The event, which takes place at Newcastle City Hall on Thursday 24 October from 10am to 12pm, is

part of the Count Us In Festival – an inaugural, month-long program that highlights disability inclusion across Newcastle. Mrs Russell said the presentation would be a chance for carers to connect and learn strategies to become more positive and share experiences. Continued on page 16

cover story From page 14 “I know how hard it is to find time for yourself, to not feel guilty about wanting to escape and have time for yourself, and to stay positive,” she said. “We recognise the reality as carers that it can be harder. “It’s not necessarily because of our kids, it is actually because of how everything is set up. “I will talk about systemic negativity – the fact that the system is set up against carers from the start, so you’ve got to fight every step of the way just to be believed and get the help you need. “I’d love parents and carers to understand that there’s nothing wrong with our kids. “There’s no deficit or disorder; there is a diagnosis, but that should just open up understanding.” The Count Us In Festival has included a range of events, such as inclusive skateboarding, surfing,

barbecues, comedy shows, low sensory museum experiences, and educational opportunities. According to a City of Newcastle spokesperson, the festival is about showcasing the abilities of people with disability, rather than limitations. “We all have limitations – what if everyone focused on your limitations every day?” the spokesperson said. “You wouldn’t go out of the house. “So, having these events for people to get together to discuss, support and create networks – they are not looking at what City of Newcastle can do, they are looking at how they can support each other and what we need every day from each other.” Visit newcastle.nsw.gov.au for more information on the festival or to find events. - Ben Murphy

Nathaniel Chandler and his mum getting ready to design an emoji.

A ‘text’ in the right direction Independence, connectivity and inclusivity are just three of the ways technology can enhance the lives of the vision impaired. International White Cane Day (15 October), which is supported

by Guide Dogs Australia, has showcased the importance of these assistive technologies. In the lead up to the event, a group of young people with low vision designed their own emojis

during a special event at the Art Lab for Kids in Charlestown. One of the participants, Nathaniel Chandler, said he was excited about using technology. “I like to make movies,” he says. “If we are getting rid of a book, and if it’s one of the family’s favourites, I might like to get a video of me just turning the pages so that mum can still read it.” Several new, inclusive emojis are being released later this year, including a white cane and Guide Dog emoji. The emojis will lead to a more inclusive online community, with two-thirds of Australians living with a visual impairment or blindness stating the emojis will improve how they can represent themselves online. “While there is a lot more to equitable representation and inclusion of people with blindness or low vision, we are embracing the emoji as a ‘text’ in the right direction,” Guide Dogs Australia Technology and Access Manager,

Newcastle Carpet & Flooring

Jodie Martin, says. Guide Dogs Australia Assistive Technology Specialist, Ben Moxey, says technology has been “revolutionary” in his life and the lives of others. “You are able to get on your computer and do your own banking, independently, get on and shop online and buy things you don’t need on eBay and all of that sort of stuff that everyone else takes for granted,” he says. Before the development of these technologies, individuals often relied on memorising key sequences or other people within their lives to help them use it. “I used to have a mobile phone like everyone else, and someone would send me a text message – some of my mates used to do it for a joke and I would have to take it to my next door neighbours place to get him to read it to me,” Moxey says. - Elizabeth Symington

news Swim centre to reopen after revamp

Ajay and Beau Jenkinson get a sneak peek at the revamped swim centre.

Toronto Swim Centre will reopen its doors this weekend after a $6.5 million revamp. The renovation included retiling of all pools, a new combined hydrotherapy and spa pool, a new entry and kiosk, new training room, pool resurfacing, new stairs and

refurbished amenities. The work, which began in August 2018 to bring the swim centre in line with community expectations, also involved replacing filtration and disinfection systems, as well as the installation of new solar roof panels and insulation.

Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser will officially open the facility at a Community Fun Day on Saturday 19 October from 10am to 1pm. “Toronto Swim Centre has been such a valued and important resource in the community for many years,” Cr Fraser said. “It’s fantastic to have it back, better than ever and equipped to serve its thousands of annual visitors for many years to come. “We would like to thank the Westlakes community for their patience during the renovations. “I can’t wait to join the community to celebrate the reopening of this popular facility ahead of the busy summer season.” Lake Macquarie council owns the swim centre, but the site has been operated by contractors First Splashes since 2005.

A real alternative to aged care

Put safety first At the start of the state’s peak boating season, Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie is urging boaters to put safety first by checking in with their local unit before heading out on the water. Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie Unit Commander Malcolm Wardrop said members would be on duty to serve the boating public. “Our hard-working volunteers will be keeping watch, poised to respond to emergencies on the water,” he said. “The unit operates two accredited search and rescue vessels, plus a Rescue Water Craft, and maintains a marine radio safety watch 24/7.” Siimple safety precautions include: check conditions; ensure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket; log-on and log-off with your local marine rescue unit; and check your vessel is in good working order.

The group will recognise its milestone by hosting an annual Tea4TROG event amid Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the Mercure Charlestown on Sunday 27 October. The event is designed to bring people together to highlight the importance of the organisation’s research. TROG Cancer Research chief executive Susan Goode hopes this year’s edition will be even more successful. “Combating cancer takes a collaboration between our researchers, our team and the community, and the Newcastle and Hunter community have always been so supportive of

our cause,” she said. “It’s thanks to events like Tea4TROG and the generosity of our community that we’ve been able to look at new ways to use radiation therapy and continued to achieve great advancements in cancer patient care and outcomes that have changed the way patients are treated worldwide.” The event will be hosted by cancer survivor and journalist, Julie McCrossin, alongside guest speaker, TROG member and consultant radiation oncologist, Puma Sundaresan. For the first time, TROG Cancer Research is also inviting people within the community to host their own morning teas. “We understand that not everyone can attend, so we want people to have the opportunity to get involved in other ways,” Ms Goode added. Visit trog.com.au/Tea4TROG-tickets to buy tickets or, to host your own Tea4TROG, send an email to trog@trog.com.au. - Elizabeth Symington

Talented teen’s bright future

Brij Ingrey at practice prior to the Jack Newton International Sub Junior Classic in the Hunter Valley.

Lambton’s Brij Ingrey knows this is what he wants to do. The talented teenager, who represents the Australian Golf

Club, has stepped up his game even further this year. He took out the Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club Men’s Club Championship – an all-age event – in May and then teamed up with fellow Novocastrian Hamish Ellison to guide NSW to a successful Australian School Sport Championships in September. Ingrey also went on to claim the Nelson Bay Golf Club boys’ junior tournament, before a slight hiccup at the Jack Newton International Sub Junior Classic – a competition that attracted the best young players, aged 10 to 14, to the Hunter Valley during the school holidays – saw him finish outside the top 10. “It wasn’t the best week, but it is what it is,” Ingrey said. “I didn’t play very well but the other kids did; there are some

good players across the state and interstate as well.” Despite his disappointment, he bounced back to take out the Kensington Cup in Sydney two days later. Ingrey said his father, Mark, a professional golfer, had been integral to his development. “I’ve played a lot with him and I have been playing a lot better over the last couple of years,” he said. “As I’ve become older, I’ve started to hit the ball a lot further. “In the last few months, in particular, I have started playing much better golf and have been going up against the best in my age division. “It’s really opened my eyes that I can actually make a career out of this.” - Ben Murphy

The Hunter Valley Mining Charity Rugby League knockout competition will kick-off this Saturday 19 October at Pirtek Park, Singleton. Organised by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service – Singleton Volunteer Support Group as an annual fundraising event, it attracts more than 400 coal mining employees from throughout the Hunter Valley and beyond. Each team competes for 10 minutes per half with 10 players on the field until one is crowned champions and presented with the Charity Shield. Apart from the on-field action, there will also be jumping castles, amusement rides, face paintings, and giveaways. Gates open at 7.30am for an 8.30am start.

sport Jets launch season with F3 Derby Newcastle will kick off its A-League campaign against rivals the Mariners at Central Coast Stadium this weekend. The Jets had the bye in round one under a new 11-team competition, while a late penalty, decided by the Video Assistant Referee, saw the Mariners lose 2-1 away to Western Sydney. Northern Irishman Bobby Burns, on-loan at Newcastle from Scottish club Hearts, said he was excited ahead of his first F3 Derby. “It’s been a long time coming; my preseason started on 11 June with Hearts,” he said. “[The F3] is a good derby - hopefully we can get the upper hand and, obviously with them losing at the weekend, we’re level on points so it’s a good opportunity to start the season off and get ourselves above them. “Derbies are different to most games so hopefully we get a good crowd out of it.” Apart from Burns, the Jets boast several other fresh faces for the 2019/20 campaign, with offseason recruits including the likes of experienced attacker Nick Fitzgerald, former Norwich City stalwart Wes Hoolahan, Panama striker Abdiel

Arroyo, and former Mariner Matt Millar. The F3 Derby will kick off at 7.30pm this Saturday 19 October. Each team has three byes this season because of the introduction of Melbourne-based club Western United. Meanwhile, the Jets bolstered its W-League squad with three key signings last week as the club looks to improve on a seventh-place finish in 2018/19. Former Canberra United attacker Nicki Flannery and Melbourne Victory defender Annabel Martin, who both played for Australia’s under-20s side, were announced as new recuits alongside New Lambton WPL flyer Lauren Allan. “We’re really pleased with the quality of the recruiting we’ve been able to do, we’ve brought in a group of people who will really add to this group on and off the park,” Jets W-League head coach Craig Deans said. “There’s W-League experience in Nicki and Annabel, and Lauren [Allan] has proved locally just how lethal she can be in front of goal.” Despite the additions, Novocastrian Emily

van Egmond has departed the club alongside American quartet Arin Gilliland-Wright, Britt Eckerstrom, Katie Stengel and Taylor Smith. Newcastle’s new-look squad came together and started training on Monday ahead of the 2019/20 season. The draw, which has been delayed, is expected to be released before the end of the month, with a predicted start of mid-November.

Lakes Radiology advertising moment

Great excitement at Lakes Radiology with promise of new horizons Lakes Radiology is a reputable and well-established Radiology clinic located in Morisset. Established in 2011, the clinic provides quality and patient-focused medical imaging services to our community and supports our loyal referrers as we care for our patients. Situated in the Waratah Medical Services complex, we are directly located across from Morisset train station. The clinic is easily accessible by public transport and offers on-site parking. A year ago, Lakes Radiology was acquired by Carlisle Health. With a promise to work with our people, referrers and stakeholders to further build our comprehensive service, introduce operational improvements and enhance the patient experience, it has been an exciting experience so far. With this great change, we have remained committed to serving our patients better by remaining a predominantly bulk billing practice, despite the lack of any Medicare rebate rise over the last 20 years. This was an important aspect for Carlisle Health to renew in our mandate. This new horizon has seen long awaited and refreshing additions to the clinic. Most recently, the introduction of our new, state-of the art, low-dose Computed Tomography (CT)- the GE 128 Slice EVO. Kia Brown, our very experienced and dynamic Chief Radiographer, who joined the clinic earlier this

year, has been instrumental in the winds of change at Lakes Radiology and immediately recognised the need for a new CT machine. Carlisle Health was delighted at the opportunity to help Kia and her team provide an even better service to our patients and referrers. Our new CT has increased capability to complete more procedures, reduce waiting times and is safer for our patients. We are able to provide a more efficient CT service, which incorporates more diagnostic and interventional procedures, including more Pain Management services. With change comes opportunity. The practice culture has always been “people ARE the difference” and the Practice Manager, Elizabeth Jones, says: “Our team is highly motivated and very skilled with many years of experience amongst the clinical staff. The entire practice culture is important to everyone who works at Lakes Radiology.” Elizabeth is confident that she has never worked with a more cohesive group of people, who constantly strive each day to make life easier for Lakes’ patients, referring doctors and the community. Carlisle Health have also worked closely with their IT specialists to ensure referring doctors are provided with access to images, with a link on reports to enable fast and accurate access. Lakes Radiology was recently recognised as a My Health Record practice by Digital Health Services

Australia at the recent AAPM 2019 conference in Brisbane. Lakes Radiology believes in a caring, holistic approach to our valued stakeholders and will continue to provide quality care and services to the local community. For Lakes Radiology, people are the difference and for them, to improve constantly is to change for the better. Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of everyone who seeks our help and expertise. Our team looks forward to serving your needs.

Spring clean Spring is well and truly here, but how fresh are you really feeling? With the indulgent summer festive period fast approaching, now is the perfect time to make a few changes to your diet and give your wellbeing a much-needed boost.

Eat more fruits and vegetables – Studies show that eating five or more serves of fresh fruits and vegetables each day can result in improved energy, mood, motivation and wellbeing in just three days. Eat leafy greens – They give a powerful mineral boost that can improve energy, reduce aches and pains and even reduce PMS symptoms. Some leafy greens, such as rocket, also help to improve digestion by stimulating the release of digestive enzymes and supporting the growth and replication of healthy gut bugs. Eat blueberries every day – An Australian study found that a handful of blueberries a day is enough to improve memory, focus and may even reduce dementia and Alzheimer symptoms. Blueberries are also a great source of antioxidants and may help tired adrenal glands to recover from stress and exhaustion. So, eat more blueberries for a sharper mind and better overall wellbeing. Ditch cow’s milk in favour of plantbased milks – Most dairy products can increase inflammation, digestive distress and heart disease risk, but plant-based milks such as Califia Farms Unsweetened Almond Milk offer a great, varied selection of minerals and vitamins including

Breakfast smoothie

Jennifer May’s breakfast smoothie. Start the day with a healthy smoothie. 1 handful of rocket

According to Jennifer May, a renowned Nutritionist, author and wellness speaker from Sydney City Nutritionist and Food Intolerance Australia, there are many simple ways that people can give their diet a bit of a ‘spring clean’ to get their health back on track. Not sure where to start? Here are Jennifer’s top tips for spring wellness:

taste

2 ripe kiwi fruits ¼ avocado 2-3 cups of Califia Farms Unsweetened Almond Milk 1 tbsp hemp seeds or pumpkin seeds 2 tsp raw cacao or organic cocoa powder calcium, Vitamin E, manganese and magnesium. Eat avocadoes – It’s always a good time to eat more avocadoes! Avocados contain Vitamin E which helps to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer’s, sun damage and can even reverse signs of ageing.

1 tsp of organic honey (or manuka if you have it – which heals stomach ulcers) 1 pinch of ground chili (for improved heart health) Blend all ingredients and serve.

Have a cold caffeine hit – Coffee is also a source of plant tannins and, as a bitter food, it helps to stimulate the release of digestive enzymes. Eat more raw seeds – Especially sunflower, pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds. Seeds are a rich source of protein, zinc and healthy fats – possibly three of the most important nutrients for humans. Reduce your sugar intake – Try and limit sugary treats and drinks and swap for healthier, more natural options. Eat kiwi fruit – Kiwis are rich in Vitamin C and are a natural mild laxative. Great for when you want a nice flat, gas-free tummy and clearer skin. Kiwis also contain digestive enzymes and are therefore great to add to meals, smoothies or to have as an after-dinner sweet treat. They’re also a great source of folate, so great for those who are trying to get pregnant and one study found that kiwis may reduce asthma symptoms.

Dust off your baubles, fi nd your festive cheer and join the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club for a charity preview of the play Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. All funds raised at the preview will go towards purchasing four King Quattro Cots for Ward J2. These cots will allow children to stay in the same cot for the duration of their stay at hospital. The kids club raises funds to buy equipment that is not covered by the hospital budget. “We exist to raise money for the children’s hospital,” Volunteer Secretary Kathy Jones said. “They order [the equipment], and we give them a cheque to pay for them.” The charity recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and reflected on all they have achieved, with about $3 million raised during that time. It is dependent on a team of volunteers, who fundraise through raffles, trivia nights, craft stalls and events like this one.

Newcastle Theatre Company is putting on the production, with a cast of eight, ageing from 19 to 30. The play, written by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcan, is a sequel to Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice. It is set two years after the end of Pride and Prejudice and tells the story of Mary Bennet, the third sister in the Bennet family. Mary is trying to fi nd her place in the world. “She is concerned she’s being left behind,” Director Fran Hodgson said. Hodgson added the romantic comedy is a coming of age story, a “visual treat”, and “has a nice feel to it for the end of the year”. Community set to celebrate at picnic Enjoy the sunshine and celebrate as a community this Tuesday 22 October at Lake Macquarie City Council’s The Great Get Together Picnic. The picnic will recognise Mental Health Month, Children’s Week and Lake Macquarie Family Day Cares’ 40th Birthday. The picnic is a free event where the community can come together and enjoy lunch, live entertainment and activities from 11am to 2pm at Speers Point Park. It will also recognise the council’s Me2 program – an initiative that provides free, inclusive activities that are accessible to all. Bring along a picnic mat, chair, water bottle and sunscreen to join

in the fun. Face painting, yoga, therapy ponies, cycling without age, a reptile show and giant Jenga and Connect Four are some of the activities on offer, with live performances from Connor Wink and local school groups also set to occur. Free lunch is up for grabs, provided by Nikinpa Aboriginal Family and Child Care Centre; registration for this is essential, but families are also encouraged to bring along their own food. Visit eventbrite.com.au/e/ the-great-get-together-picnictickets-74643810647 to register for the event and free lunch. The day is supported by a number of charities, including Samaritans and Lifeline.

‘Mr Monopoly’ and Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, roll the first dice.

Newcastle’s own Monopoly board The world’s most famous board game is embracing a unique Novocastrian theme. The Newcastle Monopoly board has been unveiled, with people

flocking to the Newcastle Museum to have a roll of the dice. Monopoly collector Kirra Thurston was at the launch last week.

With 200 versions of the game already, this was a special edition to add to her collection. “I think it will be exciting for the community to have their own board and have things that they know [and] get excited about when they land on it because they actually know what it is,” Thurston said. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Mr Monopoly were the first people to roll the dice on the new board. “Newcastle is an iconic city so it’s only fitting we have our very own Monopoly board game to celebrate our spectacular built and natural attractions,” Cr Nelmes said. “We’re certainly spoilt for choice for board game-worthy locations to feature, from our renowned beaches to locations like Newcastle Museum, Blackbutt Reserve, and Fort Scratchley, which are all up for grabs for players. “I’m thrilled our city now has its very own version of Monopoly and know it will be embraced by

Novocastrians young and old.” Miles Thomsen-Wright and his younger sister Macy were excited for the new competition. “She’s scared her brother will beat her at another Monopoly,” Miles said. Before the board was unveiled, the Thomsen-Wright family discussed what they believed would be on the board. Miles thought that Nobby’s Lighthouse would take the top, most expensive position, while Macy hoped a ferry or tugboat would be a playing piece and that Stockton Bridge would make an appearance on the board. Thousands of people had their say on what landmarks would be included on the board. ANZAC Memorial Walk and Nobby’s Beach replace the popular Mayfair and Park Lane, with King Edward Park, Hunter Valley Gardens and McDonald Jones Stadium also making the cut. - Elizabeth Symington

Refresh, recycle and reinvent for spring Pre-loved fashion event Raid My Wardrobe is coming to the Hunter Valley for the fi rst time this weekend. Organiser Rachel Prest said what fi rst started as a way to clear out her wardrobe and reinvent herself in 2010 had since become the “greenest, funkiest, most iconic” recycled clothing market in Newcastle. “We all have beautiful, no-longer-worn clothing sitting in our wardrobes,” Ms Prest said. “What better way is there to recycle and have fun in the process? “It is great to see so many women who wouldn’t normally shop at op shops embrace the Raid My Wardrobe concept. “Many women are becoming more and more environmentally conscious and socially aware of the impact of fast fashion and the fashion

industry.” The Hunter Valley edition, set to take place on Sunday 20 October from 10am to 1pm at Singleton Diggers, will feature 25 hand-selected stalls full of near-new designer and vintage threads in brands such as Sass & Bide, Saba, Alannah Hill, Witchery, Kookai, Zimmermann, Camilla and more. “Raid My Wardrobe is the perfect guiltfree shopping experience,” Ms Prest added. There is a $5 entry fee with free parking. Coffee and refreshments will be available. Cash sales only. Go to raidmywardrobe.com.au for more information.

PLAYFUL BOTANICAL

INSPIRED BY NATURE

We’ve all heard the saying ‘less is more’ and this rings true for styling your home, too. A little goes a long way so just look for a few key pieces that play to this season’s botanical, floral or natural trends.

metallic finishes are always a winning way. Another trending material that used to be reserved for high-end stores has made its way into affordable décor – terrazzo!

LUXE FEMININE

A new season refresh doesn’t have to break the bank. New décor, a bright accent colour or switching to lighterweight and natural materials are simple changes you can make. Need further convincing? Gina Ciancio from The Style Curator has created three different bedrooms using Big W’s new home collection, Spring Valley, with each look coming in under $250.

Anchor the look with natural elements. There’s a growing appreciation for more natural materials and finishes – and for good reason. They add warmth and softness to a space, while adding a homely feel.

Enjoying a resurgence As the days warm our attention is drawn to the garden – what should we prune, should we fertilise the lawn, which trees and shrubs should be fed? These jobs take precedence, making it natural to overlook straggly indoor plants or even just general maintenance. Enjoying a resurgence, indoor plants may require as much cultivation as the garden. My suggestions to the adaption of a plant to inside is often light but, more importantly, fresh air. Most plants object to being shut in a corner without air circulation. Onto the plants that will provide clean air – I find the larger indoor plants such as palms and strelitzias and certainly Madonna Lilies are ideal.

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

THIS WEEK • If showers continue, fertilise lawns and top dress if necessary. • Fruit fly questions are already being asked. The best answers I can give for fruit trees – hang fly baits in the trees to attract them before fruit begins to ripen. Tomatoes; paint the stake with a paintable spread of Vegemite and Malathon; the female fly loves the Vegemite. • Cut back lavenders, diosma and daisies when they finish flowering. Don’t cut back to hard wood.

The Hunger Games

Saturday, 9GO!, 7pm, M (2012)

Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games is certainly no fluffy piece about wizards or werewolves, and director and co-writer Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) does a magnificent job of bringing the futuristic world of Panem to life. To fight for survival in a world ravaged by drought, famine and war, teenagers are forced to battle to the death live on television while the rest are forced to watch.

Friday

pick of the week Terminator Salvation Monday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (2009)

It’s now clear why tantrum-prone thespian Christian Bale (pictured) was so upset on the set of Terminator Salvation. As resistance fighter John Connor, the Welsh actor once again plays second fiddle to a handsome Aussie – Heath Ledger stole The Dark Knight from under him, and Sam Worthington is easily the best thing about this visceral thrill-ride. Helena Bonham Carter pops up as a sickly scientist.

Call Me By Your Name Saturday, SBS, 8.30pm, (2017)

This remarkable film from Italian director Luca Guadagnino, based on the novel by André Aciman, is one of the most beautiful and transcendent love stories in recent cinema. During the summer of 1983, 17-yearold Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and 24-year-old American graduate student Oliver (Armie Hammer, pictured) form a friendship at Elio’s parents’ mansion in rural Italy. A perceptive, vivid reflection on love and desire, Call Me By Your Name is simply not to be missed.

celebrity birthday EMILIA CLARKE 23 October 1986 The year ahead is an ideal time for forming new bonds, perhaps business relationships, friendships or social contacts. Emilia will be attracted to those in high positions, with strong personalities or notably younger than herself. This is the ideal time to clear away any dead wood in relationships which may have caused misunderstandings or unhappiness. Whether in love or business, she’ll find those born under the signs of Aries, Leo or Aquarius will influence events.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

both in your public and family life.

The focus is on relationships, both personal and professional, and power struggles, manipulation and control issues are likely. To avoid issues of all sorts it is necessary to be conscious of your actions and speech. While it’s important to say what you mean, sometimes it helps to be tactful.

This is an ideal time to learn to relax and meditate and to travel on a series of inner journeys. It’s also a good time to listen to your instincts and intuition. Financial matters which involve other people’s money will become important as will their attitude to such matters.

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

Your confidence continues to grow and your physical energy can be maintained. Power equals responsibility and you’ll have to prove your worth once you’ve achieved a measure of success. Now is an ideal time to clear away any dead wood in relationships which could have caused unhappiness.

On the professional front, you are best advised to be focused on the bigger picture and to remember that you can achieve a lot more as a team than individually. So this week, be wary of stepping on the toes of trusted colleagues and superiors.

You will undoubtedly be busy trying to keep up with replying to messages, voicemail, emails and other correspondence. Practical jobs such as cookery, car maintenance and household chores will also be on your mind. If you’re not skilled at these types of jobs you will soon learn the ropes.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Work will be important and you’ll find that either your normal job becomes more interesting or you do something new and highly satisfying. You’ll have to cope with administrative work including emails, and dealing with business associates on the phone will become a feature of your daily routine.

64

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Avoid taking any unnecessary risks with your hard earned cash. Feeling moodier than usual, you could find yourself involved in a series of family arguments; in fact, your home could become something of a battleground which suddenly starts to resemble a nest full of egomaniacs.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV The focus in on behind-the-scenes activity. Some of your friends will be going through some tough challenges and you will have a desire to support them, whilst others may find your attitude at times difficult to cope with. You will make achievements as part of a group or a team.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC If you’re not used to working in a structured organisation, you will learn how to; alternatively, you might go from one sort of structure to a completely different one which runs by a different set of rules. You will need to be seen as being respectable

This season is always a good time for a decent spring clean. Extra funds can be made through such things as selling real estate and possibly offloading old artefacts and pieces of junk that have been cluttering up your house. It might be time for a garage sale.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB As the old adage goes, what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. Continue to work at what makes you happy, what your purpose in life is and ask yourself whether what you’re doing really is fulfilling all of your needs – financial, personal, emotional and aspirational.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Your physical vitality is strong this month and it would be a shame for you to waste or misdirect it. Apart from your capacity to work hard, this is a time when you could also play hard. Your company will be highly sought after by friends and colleagues.

FOOD We love our food, whether it’s eating out at a restaurant or cooking at home while entertaining family and friends. My wife, Julie, is studying Nutrition, so she loves to cook new recipes for me. Italian is my preference, and Julie’s spaghetti and meatballs is my favourite dish.

COFFEE Australia has a great coffee culture. We live just off Beaumont Street in Hamilton, which has some great spots. We also like to visit The Autumn Rooms on Darby Street, where I have my Espresso and a bite to eat.

My favourite things REAL ESTATE I’ve always taken a keen interest in real estate and interior design. Julie and I love watching all the renovation shows on Foxtel like Selling Houses Australia and Love it or List it. I love the older style Victorian and Edwardian-style properties from the 1900s and my neighbourhood, Hamilton, is full of them. Hopefully one will be ours one day – we can only dream!

Nick Fitzgerald NEWCASTLE JETS ATTACKER

Nick Fitzgerald is a Hyundai A-League veteran of more than 170 games after making his debut as a 17-year-old with the Central Coast Mariners back in 2008. Now aged 27, Fitzgerald is at his fifth Hyundai A-League club following stints with the Mariners, Brisbane Roar, Melbourne City, and the Western Sydney Wanderers. An Australian international at youth level, the attacker is best known for his speed on the flanks and ability to cause problems for opposition defences. He made his debut for the Jets in the FFA Cup Round of 32 win over Melbourne Victory back in August, and scored his first goal for the club against Edgeworth in the Round of 16 that same month. Off the park, Nick and wife Julie have just welcomed their second child, Aubrey – a little sister to Harrison. 70

THE BEACH One of the benefits of living in Newcastle is there are great beaches. We love taking our son Harrison down to Merewether to build sandcastles. We just had our daughter, Aubrey, and can’t wait to take her down, too.

HOLIDAYS Every off-season we like to travel somewhere as a family; this last off-season we went to Europe. Julie, Harrison and I went to Brighton in England to watch one of my mates, Mat Ryan, play in the EPL. Then on to London and Paris and finished up in Turin and Milan, which was an amazing experience
