From the editor I have had the pleasure of getting to know so many of you through stories, interviews and face-to-face meetings during my two-and-a-half years here. As I’m sitting in the big chair, which I pinched when now-former editor Georgia Osland vacated it last Friday, I can’t help but feel excited about the opportunity to maintain the relationships we’ve managed to build with the community.

New journalist Elizabeth Symington has officially started with us and she joins a team that is committed to sharing your wonderful stories. Our latest edition features Tocal Beekeepers Field Day on the cover – a nod to the importance of the beekeeping industry in the event’s 40th year. You’ll also find coverage inside of the first NSW Youth Drought Summit in Lake Macquarie; a brave couple share their story ahead of a pregnancy and infant loss service at Sandgate Cemetery; and a preview of the Lake Macquarie Superboats. There has been an unhealthy amount of caffeine consumed in order to bring this edition together, but we always aim to produce the best product possible for you, our loyal readers, each week. I hope you all had a fun and safe long weekend. Enjoy the read. -Ben Murphy

He believes that the federal government’s decision to offer $150 million in funds for the Australian Space Agency to develop technologies for the US mission to land astronauts on the moon by 2024 has been a prime example. NASA is also expected to use the lunar program as the base to send astronauts to Mars. “They’re willing to spend [that] to go to Mars, but all they have to do is walk out west and it looks like Mars,” Mr Richards adds.

As a young person who wants to enter the agriculture industry, Luke Richards knows the impact of the drought better than most. The 18-year-old is one of the participants at an inaugural threeday NSW Youth Drought Summit in Lake Macquarie, which wraps up tomorrow (Friday 11 October). Children’s charity Unicef Australia, with the support of the state government, has hosted the summit to enable youth to join decision-makers to discuss the challenges they face in living with drought, as well as how responses can be improved. Mr Richards, who hails from Wollongong but now studies at Tocal College in the Lower Hunter, says the summit is a chance to reinforce the drought’s severity. “We can have a talk to policy

Campaign on car theft A Lake Macquarie council campaign will aim to put the brakes on car theft. According to the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR), incidents of car theft have dropped across the city since 2017. Despite this, the council’s acting manager of community partnerships, Stephen McAlister, says it is still a serious issue. “Lake Macquarie experienced 516 vehicle thefts in the 12 months to June, with 70% stolen from people’s homes,” he said. “Those statistics demonstrate that vehicle security needs to start when – and where – you park your car at the end of the day.” The council has teamed up with NSW Police, National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction and Sustainable Neighbourhoods to
launch Operation Bounce Back. The campaign will see four pop-up stalls located around the city, including Cardiff Marketplace (21 October); Belmont Central (29 October); Toronto shopping mall (31 October); and Morisset Woolworths (7 November). Local police representatives will attend the stalls and offer advice and information on how to secure vehicles. “There are many ways to increase vehicle security at home – often by simply changing habits,” Mr McAlister said. “Instead of putting keys in highly visible and obvious spots, place them in secure and discreet places. “Don’t leave your keys on hooks and benches by doors and windows.” Go to better.lakemac. com.au for more.

news Parents to honour babies’ memories at service
Hayley Castles and Nathan Rae in their daughters’ bedroom. Photo: Peter Stoop
Hayley and Nathan are sharing their story to let others know about the benefits of a Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Evening. “Everyone can come and share empathy and honour our babies that aren’t in our arms anymore,” Hayley said. She added pregnancy and infant loss could be a taboo topic, but the ceremony gave those who faced a devastating loss a place to come
together and “a platform to share memories”. The annual service will take place on Tuesday 15 October at 6.15pm at the Garden of the Innocents in the grounds of Sandgate Cemetery. A light supper will be served following the service. Email info.sandgate@nmclm. com.au or call 4968 3602 for more information. Bishop gate S treet - Elizabeth Symington

Delivered naturally, Remy was born first, and Lilah followed four minutes later. Hayley remembers “seeing their chest rising and falling” as Remy and Lilah spent a short time breathing. Devastatingly, the babies could not be taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the couple had to watch their little ones pass away. They spent the night with the girls, surrounded by family, and held onto the memories they had had with them, knowing the future they planned could no longer happen. “Leaving the hospital emptyhanded was heartbreaking for us,” Hayley said. “We planned our future to have two beautiful little girls in it and I just had to meet them and say goodbye to them all in the same 10 minutes.”

Following a heartbreaking loss, couple Hayley Castles and Nathan Rae are speaking out about the tragic fate of their twins and have found some comfort in honouring their babies’ memories. On 5 November 2018, at 22 weeks pregnant, Hayley gave birth to her beautiful identical twin girls, Remy and Lilah Rae. That morning, Hayley was experiencing pains she thought were Braxton Hicks Contractions. After getting up to get ready for work, Hayley’s waters broke, and she bled the entire way to hospital. Once there, Hayley went into denial about the situation. While both her daughters had heartbeats, she was told she would need to deliver and give birth to her girls.

news From page 4 It presents an opportunity for youth to have a break from the land; work with their peers who are going through similar struggles; and connect, engage and reflect. Mr Richards says it’s important for people to know that there is support available for them. “We’ll be trying to brainstorm some coping strategies to give people ways of getting through,” he says. “Mental health is a big issue during the drought.” Apart from Mr Richards, a proud Paakantyi Wilyakali woman, Tameka O’Donnell, also signed up to attend the summit. Originally from Broken Hill in far west NSW but now residing in Newcastle, Ms O’Donnell says she often witnesses the drought’s devastating effects when she returns home, as well as via social media platforms.
“Broken Hill has been in drought for several years with it only worsening where it is now at a stage of such severity that it is sickening,” she says. “Growing up, we would often go fishing and hunting – a very common cultural practice amongst my family. “Now, there is no water in the river to fish and our traditional meat such as kangaroo are unhealthy and scarce. “The water is so unhealthy that recently, due to the drought, millions of fish died, making it into the media, but the drought and river’s condition have long been deteriorating.” The summit’s program of events focused on policy (Wednesday), psycho-social support (today), and advocacy (tomorrow). The University of Newcastle is set to become the home of a new $35 million Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence. The ARC Centre of Excellence for Enabling EcoEfficient Beneficiation of Minerals will make mineral processing more environmentally sustainable and provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to UoN students. The university states its centre will help secure the future of the metals required for modern living and will work towards zero-emission mining through reducing the loss of high value metals and doubling energy and water productivity. “We’re delighted to receive this significant funding, which will enable us to carry out worldleading research into developing more efficient and environmentally-friendly mineral processing,” vice chancellor, professor Alex Zelinsky AO, said. The announcement of the funding was made at the university’s Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) by Member for Robertson Lucy Wicks last week. The centre will be led by Laureate Professor Kevin Galvin.
The first sod has been turned on the long-awaited Munibung Road extension in Lake Macquarie. Once complete, the $5.17 million project will link Glendale with Cardiff’s industrial estate, improving connectivity around the city’s northern and western suburbs. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said the 820-metre stretch of new road, plus landscaping and cycle lane, would unlock business investment and commercial development, as well as housing opportunities. “It has taken a significant amount of work to get to this point and we acknowledge the Australian government’s patience and support of the NSW government to reach a solution,” Cr Fraser said. The council is working with the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation and interested parties to develop the site. The project is being funded by the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund and the council. Works are expected to be complete by mid2020.
Vinnies NSW has called for an urgent increase in social housing. More than 100,000 people are on the state’s social housing waitlist, with many facing homelessness in the meantime. This includes about 1,200 in the Newcastle region, another 960 in Lake Macquarie, 619 in Maitland, 205 in Cessnock, and 135 in Port Stephens. On World Homeless Day today (Thursday 10 October), St Vincent de Paul Society’s chief executive, Jack de Groot, said it was self-evident that more housing would help address the chronic problem. “But this isn’t translating into enough concrete action on the ground,” he said. “The NSW government has a building plan, but we need to urgently ramp up that and take major action to house our growing population.” Vinnies has launched a new campaign called Build Homes, Build Hope. It calls on the government to build an extra 5,000 social housing properties per year for the next decade.

City of Newcastle and private operator Keolis Downer will trial an ‘On Demand’ transport service so Novocastrians can travel between inner suburbs and the city centre. A total of three vehicles, two six-passenger cars and an 11-passenger van with wheelchair access will be rolled out to service the trial area. It is set to take in the East End, Civic, Marketown and the Newcastle Interchange from places such as Beaumont Street, Hamilton; Broadmeadow Station; Merewether; The Junction; Bar Beach; Hamilton South; and The Hill. The On Demand trial will support the City’s long-term planning and ambition for
higher levels of public transport patronage and active travel creating a more pedestrianfriendly city centre. “It presents a new and flexible way for commuters to make their journey into the city for work and has the potential to remove cars from the city centre, opening up more car spaces in and around the city,” Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said. “The trial’s aim is to encourage Novocastrians and visitors to take advantage of public transport options in the city.” Transport on Demand is characterised by users being able to request pick-ups at times of their choosing via an app. Journeys are expected to cost a flat fare of $3.20.

news From doctor to patient As a clinical psychologist, Jodie Fleming had counselled many patients through similar situations. But nothing could have prepared her for the moment she would be on the receiving end of bad news. It was 2010 and Dr Fleming was working at John Hunter Children’s Hospital. “The reception was terrible so I walked over to the carpark because I’d been waiting on some test results, and, sure enough, the phone buzzed,” she recalled. “It was a message from my doctor, telling me I had to come in to discuss the results. “I’d never ever had a phone call like that.” Soon after, Dr Fleming was diagnosed with breast cancer as a young 37-year-old with no family history of the disease. She had a lumpectomy at the Calvary Mater Hospital to remove the cancer. However, whilst waiting for a follow-up appointment with her surgeon, not two months later, Dr Fleming discovered a second lump in her other breast, which turned out to be another
primary cancer. She relocated to South West Victoria, where she practices now, to be with family while she underwent chemotherapy, followed by a bilateral mastectomy and immediate reconstruction. It was discovered Dr Fleming carried the BRCA1 gene mutation, which increased her risk of developing ovarian cancer by 60%, so she also opted to undergo a prophylactic hysterectomy. Throughout the ordeal, she found writing letters to her late grandmother therapeutic. “She’d passed away four years earlier but we were very close and I knew what she would say and do in that moment, so it really helped,” Dr Fleming said. What started as a series of letters that documented her journey quickly snowballed into her debut book, titled A Hole in My Genes. Dr Fleming will return to Newcastle this week for A Conversation on the Couch with longtime friend and former Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation (HBCF) vice-president, Michelle Faithfull. The pair will discuss Dr Fleming’s memoir,

and her journey from health professional to patient, at 48 Watt Street on Sunday 13 October from 3pm to 5pm in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Hunter Surf Life Saving chief executive, Rhonda Scruton, said last year’s 62,553 patrol hours were made possible by the dedication of volunteers and the support of the community. “We’re so fortunate to have 7,440 enthusiastic, dedicated and capable members who volunteer their time to help keep other people safe so we can all enjoy our stunning beaches throughout summer,” she said. “With the support of our long-term community partner, Newcastle Permanent, we are able to deliver these essential lifesaving services and ensure our volunteers have the equipment,
Mobility
training and skills they need to stay at the top of their game.” Last season, volunteers from 13 Hunter Surf Life Saving clubs oversaw the safety of more than 700,000 beachgoers, performing 227 recues and tending first aid to 649 people. Newcastle Permanent chief executive, Bernadette Inglis, said its partnership reflected the role surf life saving played in helping regional Australians to safely enjoy their coastal lifestyle. “We recognise the vital service volunteer surf life savers provide within the Hunter region and, through this partnership, our goal is to help Hunter Surf Life Saving continue its great work supporting clubs, volunteers and the wider community,” she said.

cover story Experts to buzz into region Former Maitland resident Bill Winner is proud to have been among the “all important food chain” for Australia and the world. Mr Winner boasts almost 50 years’ experience in the beekeeping industry. Honeybees contribute to about one third of Australia’s food supply chain through pollination. Industries across the nation are dependent on honeybee pollination for most of their production. Some of these include almonds, apples, pears and cherries, as well as high-value products like coffee and cocoa. The total worth of pollination services from managed honeybees in Australia is estimated at more than $2 billion per year. As a founder of the annual Tocal Beekeepers Field Day, Mr Winner will speak about the event’s history
in its 40th year this Saturday 12 October. He says the world has changed for beekeeping. “The recognition of honeybees as vital to Australia and the world and the upsurge in recreational beekeepers has led to greater awareness and greater value of the industry,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “Honeybees are vital to things like almond pollination, with a dependency of more than 90%. “North of Brisbane, within the last fortnight, bees have been taken out of macadamia farms, where they are vital, and then moved on to avocado crops. “We really need a nursery of beekeepers who will replace the older ones and that’s why events like this one at Tocal are important. “People go there to see what it is all about and to learn from

Experts in beekeeping will buzz into the Lower Hunter, including Dr Doug Somerville, who will launch a book based on more than 40 years’ experience in beekeeping and research. sport Racing into action-packed superboats weekend He has long admired it from the safety of the shore, but Les Binkin will now be thrust into the thick of the action. Binkin is set to drive SUV Simrad during the Offshore Superboat Championships in Lake Macquarie this month. “[Team owner] Conn Saloumidis invited me to race after last year’s event,” Binkin says. “He’s got a sore back and couldn’t race anymore, so he allowed me to drive the boat. “We’ve built up a really good relationship over the past four years and he said he liked my style.” Round three of the national championships will take place at Marmong Point over the weekend of Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October. The boats are set to be craned into
the water on the Saturday from 11am for a 1pm start. They will compete in two separate categories. In the Supercat Extreme, vessels measure up to 12 metres with two 750 horsepower V8 engines, while, in the Supercat Outboard, the models’ length is 10 metres and it runs two 300 horsepower outboard engines. “These outboard models can get up to 160 kilometres an hour,” Binkin says. “It feels like the speed of light going past, so you’ve got to slow everything down in your mind to make it clear. “It’s not something that you can completely train for.” The event also features junior demonstration runs, jet ski racing, and free water sports. Aside from racing, there will also

be plenty of action off the water across the weekend as part of the Lake Macquarie Superboats. Warners Bay markets and a popup licenced bar are set to bring the foreshore alive from 9am to 4pm and 10am to 3pm respectively, while a vintage car display has been marked down from 7.30am to 3pm at the southern end on the Saturday. In Speers Point Park, a Food and Wine Festival will go from 12pm to 8pm on Saturday, and a Show and
Shine competition is on Sunday from 7.30am to 3pm. T-28 Trojan Aerobatics and the CAC Wirraway will also put on air displays, with the T-28s on show across both days and the Wirraway, a former general-purpose military aircraft, to grace the sky from 9.45am on Sunday. Festival celebrates cultural diversity Greek native Irini Kassas initially found it hard to maintain her cultural knowledge when she first moved to Australia at the age of 14. Eight years later, she will proudly share her culture, country and heritage in front of thousands at another edition of the Maitland Riverlights Multicultural Festival. “[Riverlights] is about acceptance – it pushes forward and encourages change,” Kassas says. This year’s event, which takes place in The Levee Central Maitland on Saturday 12 October, features the likes of cultural demonstrations, lantern workshops, a global kitchen, and cultural villages. The villages are set to include food tastings, traditional games and arts, as well as a spectacular dance and music program, before the lantern flotilla and finale on the Hunter River. More than 20 villages from around the world, such as Afghanistan, China, Greece, India, Sri Lanka, Japan, South Sudan and Tonga, will be showcased at the event. “A lot of my family members get together and really put in a lot of effort in terms of maintaining the cultural village,” Kassas adds. “So many nationalities are involved in it, like
the Scots and Thais, and it’s great to be able to meet new people and learn about their culture. “People are wanting to be part of something – even if they are not Greek or from that culture, they are just wanting to be part of something bigger.” A language lounge, where participants can take a seat and learn to count in a range of languages, from Polish to Sudanese and in between, is also part of the program. Now in its eighth year, Riverlights’ last event attracted more than 8,000 people to The Levee. Maitland Mayor Loretta Baker hopes the city can share its diversity and celebrate with even more visitors this time around. “Riverlights has become an amazing event for us and we know that people love the colour, music, dance, tastes and sounds of the festival,” she says. “It’s a celebration of Maitland’s culturally diverse community.” The Maitland Riverlights Multicultural Festival will go from 3pm to 9pm. The tour follows the release of her Live Sessions EP and she will sing all her hits and fan favourites in concert. “I’ve always felt most confident when I’m on stage performing and it’s been a dream of mine to live this life as a performer,” Im said. “It’s going to be a very special tour where I get to show my musical evolution as I sing my previous repertoire, as well as the new music that I’ve been working on this year.” Im first rose to stardom in 2013, where she exited The X Factor stage a winner and her album, Dami Im, soared through the ARIA charts into the number one spot. Book follows life of Aboriginal hero Historian and Hamilton resident, Emeritus Professor John Ramsland OAM, has released his latest book, The Legacy of Douglas Grant. A Notable Aborigine in War and Peace. Ramsland’s 25th book follows the life of Aboriginal hero, Douglas Grant, who, as a twoyear-old, survived a massacre in north-eastern Queensland. Douglas was rescued and adopted by Scottish immigrants, Mr Robert and Mrs Elizabeth Grant. They raised him in Sydney where he went through school and became a sportsman, playing rugby union while being trained as a mechanical draftsman. Ramsland writes about Douglas’s time working at Mort’s Dock Engineering Company in Balmain and studying wool classing at night at Sydney Technical College. In 1912, the story finds Douglas wool classing at a station near Scone, under the mentorship of Belltrees station owner, Henry Luke White. At the age of 30 he joined the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), where he was promoted to Sergeant in the 34th Battalion, Maitland’s Own.
Before the troopship sailed, authorities demoted him to private in the 13th Battalion because of his race. He fought in the First Battle of Bullecourt, where he was wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans. During his time as prisoner, Douglas suffered through slave labour in the coal mines. Following this, he was finally recognised as an Australian Prisoner of War and was placed in the Crescent Concentration Camp for Muslim and Sikh soldiers from British, French and Russian armies. Ramsland reveals that his leadership qualities and education led him to be appointed inmate in charge of around 5,000 prisoners. Douglas achieved great things during his time at the camp – he saved the lives of 300 prisoners. Following this, the book continues to follow his life, right up until his death, at the age of 67. Ramsland explores the journey he went on to find his way back to his tribal identity. He has recreated the hero’s life through the historical events and adventures Douglas was a part of. This gripping tale shows that Douglas was a

1. Comfort zone My number one tip for parents who don’t feel so confident about getting crafty with their children is to always work within your comfort zone. Keep it simple to avoid stress and minimise mess.
2. Tool kit
How-to: kids’ Halloween mask Halloween is almost here! For any parents who have the horrors over mask-making, teacher, mum-of-three and avid crafter, Shannon Wong, shares her top tips for getting hands-on.

You don’t need hundreds of felt tips and heaps of glue, glitter and paper. Choose a few key materials that are easy to use and low on mess. The basics are: coloured card, coloured pens or paint markers, string and a stapler. I have just discovered Pintor Paint Markers and I love them for their fantastic colours and ease-ofuse – you can use them on anything. We used them on paper, terracotta and rocks. They can make any artwork look fantastic and kids love them. Place them in a container or tray to stop them rolling off the table and for easy grabability!
imagery can be scary, especially for young children. Opt for bright colours and simple designs that spark kids’ imaginations without being frightening.
4. Get help When you’re busy juggling work and family, the last thing you need is to conjure up craft projects, especially if it’s not your thing. There are plenty of resources out there – just hop online. I have developed two easy craft activities that I am sharing on my Instagram page @ohcreativeday. The Mix and Match Monster Mask contains different features that children can colour and glue onto their mask base to create their own design; and the Pintor Pumpkin Patch Mask comes in a variety of sizes. You can transform it into a colourful mask or cut out the smaller pieces to decorate trick or treat bags.

in the garden
Humble, disliked plants now in great demand Sadly, for gardeners, we are facing a lack of rain and heat to come. In the city we are blessed but, in country areas, no doubt the garden is way behind keeping crops and stock alive. It is no wonder that cacti and succulents have become so popular, now used to create a minimal addition to modern architecture. These humble, once disliked plants are now in great demand. Agaves, who would have ever considered planting such a specimen? Their fleshy, somewhat spikeylooking leaves grew in masses in neglected gardens - they grew on footpaths, under trees, anywhere it was difficult to cultivate a garden. I must confess, I have filled the
front garden up with this succulent instead of weeds, which have been hard to eradicate. Such plants are featured in glossy mags, positioned amongst white rocks or as a one-off specimen in a decorator pot. There is a consolation prize if you particularly dislike this style of gardening – it is the survival rate. Requiring little watering, such plants are ideal for our Australian climate. Potted succulents and cacti actually need different treatment – for example, cacti prefer a winter rest, requiring little watering during this period, just a small amount every couple of weeks to keep the root system from drying out, whereas succulents like to dry out

and then be saturated. When potting cacti and succulents it is essential to have a free draining mix, which are now available, especially designated for such plants. It is possible to mix coarse river sand, potting mix and one-part sand, but ready to go mixes such as Searles Cacti and Succulent Mix are probably more economical. These hardy plants still require nutrients to grow - applications of Flourish for Cacti and Succulents which has specified amounts is ideal. Like other plants they can be prone to pests such as red spider mite and mealy bug, which may need spraying with the appropriate product. Both succulents and cacti like a sunny spot – inside a sunny window is a great alternative.
THIS WEEK • Spray new growth on roses which are being attacked by aphids. • Remove spent blooms on azaleas, and mulch with peat moss. • Give gardenias a good soaking to prevent yellow leaves. It may be necessary to apply iron chelates or magnesium.

Trends to try: pastel and outback Perfect for re-energising a tired interior, the pastel look, with its soft gelato hues, and the outback look, inspired by the rich colours of the Australian landscape, are two trends you need to know about right now. Carpet Court’s style ambassador, Heather Nette King, says while the pastel look is “undeniably feminine”, combining it with pared-back modern furniture and bolder
accents of mint and pale grey “will take it from cloying to contemporary”. The outback look features a palette inspired by the colours of the desert. Heather says these “muddy tones are paired with raw, grainy timbers, rustic furniture and tactile, woven elements to create a look that feels cocooning and authentic”.

Spring Time Tidy Up As the warmer months begin to heat up, Spring time becomes the perfect season to reorganise and revitalise your ideal life and be happy. If you’re thinking about downsizing but have a few roadblocks in the way, such as decluttering and tidying up the spare room, the garage, the hallway cupboard, (or all of those)… now’s the season to look into the Spring time tidy up.
of value to someone else and change their life for the better. Sentimental items are hard, put it to one side and deal with it last. By doing this it’s liberating and you can get on with living your ideal life. IL: What do you think is the biggest hurdle for Baby Boomers?
buying an item that doesn’t ‘Spark Joy’. This mentality crosses over to all aspects and you learn a certain structure that helps you live a life of joy. You begin to change and that can help with your money, health, relationships and mentally; it infuses into every aspect of your life. Many Ingenia Lifestyle residents fi nd decluttering and downsizing their home has allowed them to live a life where they can lock up to leave and travel rather than cleaning and maintaining a large house.
GQ: You can’t live an ideal life if you’re living in the past. Having Baby Boomers understand if they can stop buying, it saves them a lot of money. Money that can be used going on a cruise etc. IL: What advice do you have for their downsizing journey?
Ingenia Lifestyle asks Australia’s fi rst Master KonMari Consultant and Evaluator for KonMari Media, Inc., Gemma Quinn, a few Q&As on her experience working with her downsizing clients going through their journey to living an ideal life.
GQ: Downsizers know what life is about and what makes them happy. They know life is short and life is hard and things can change. If things are going to stop reaching their ideal happiness, then they will let those items go.
IL: Is it possible for a couple to let go of 40 years of stuff?
IL: How can you unlock other areas after a tidy up?
GQ: Yes, absolutely. It shouldn’t be about ‘letting go’. It’s about choosing what you love and fi nding other ways your items could be
GQ: It naturally happens. It operates in a parallel system. After a tidy up, you question why you have wasted time and money on

Blue Velvet
Thursday, SBS VLND, 12.10am, MA15+ (1986)
David Lynch’s masterpiece takes you to an inexplicable place where something sweet and innocent reveals itself to be depraved and terrifying. Kyle MacLachlan (pictured) is Jeffrey, an all-American college boy who returns to his pseudo-’50s home-town. When he discovers a severed ear in a field he is drawn into a mystery that takes him into the dark underbelly of clean-cut suburbia.
Friday
pick of the week School of Rock Saturday, NBN, 9.20pm, PG (2003)
Jack Black’s (pictured) inspired and energetic performance, a razorsharp script from Mike White and the astute direction of Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise, A Scanner Darkly) ensures this is a winner. As a rock-obsessed slacker, Black drums up plenty of laughs as he assumes the identity of his teacher roommate and decides to shape a class of private school kids into rock gods.

IN SERVICE OF OTHERS There’s nothing quite like working in the service of others in our country. From 12 years in the Defence Force, four years in the Rural Fire Service, to now starting a new career with Fire and Rescue, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work in service of Australia and its people.
My favourite things FAMILY Family is the team you didn’t get to choose. Learning from them, taking care of them and being taken care of are some of the hardest aspects of life to balance, especially with my father completely dependent on us. When you take care of each other, it’s all worthwhile.

HUNTER HEROES MANAGING DIRECTOR
Novocastrian Bernie Viemeier has always held his local town close to his heart. He has lived in the area for nearly his entire life and giving back to community has been one of the most rewarding experiences he has had the pleasure of undertaking. Bernie manages the Hunter Heroes, a thriving children’s entertainment company with a high focus on giving back to the community. His kindness and attention to detail, whether it’s a costume, ensuring a sick child smiles at his jokes or guaranteeing a client or hospital gets the very best for their event, has really made Hunter Heroes stand above all others when it comes to quality. He is a true gentleman and a great friend to many. His support to the various charities and organisations has fostered many friendships and inspired others. The effort is great, but the results make everything worthwhile. 62
I’m not the fittest person in the gym but it is definitely one of my favourite things. Looking after your physical self is a passion of mine that I hope to help others with as I continue to work through my personal training qualifications.
HUNTER HEROES People are capable of amazing things but when they work together there’s not much they can’t achieve. My name may be on the paperwork for Hunter Heroes but, without the people that make up the company, it wouldn’t be possible to spread so much joy.
CHILDREN’S ENTERTAINMENT Whether it’s twisting balloons, painting faces or portraying a child’s favourite character, if it makes a child smile, lightens their day or brings a little magic into their lives, then it’ll be something I strive for. A smile can be the most powerful tool we carry.
