This week... From the editor I'm proud to be a third-generation professional communicator, following in my dad's and grandpa's footsteps (and there's a few more of us in the family). So, it was really special to have my grandpa – a former NBN News cameraman – speak at the latest Professional Communicators Network event at Newcastle Museum, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1989 earthquake. Grandpa was on the ground that day with journalist Ross Hampton, interviewing a union official at Hamilton bus depot about a local workers' strike when the 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck. He kept the camera rolling as the chaos unfolded. "I just shot what was different and told that story," he recalled. The footage is still widely used today, every year around the anniversary on 28 December. It was interesting to hear how he and award-winning PR practitioner Bob Purser, who also spoke on the panel, managed crisis communications at a time when only 100,000 people across the country had a mobile phone (compared to 20 million today!) Email existed but it was a foreign concept. Two-way radio was king. The times they are a changin', but the way we tell stories is the same.

On 23 September 2019, voting will begin to elect directors of NRMA. I am very pleased to say that I have successfully nominated to represent this region and the wider membership of NRMA. I am a proud resident of the Hunter, and believe that NRMA members and the wider community deserve quality roads, transport, travel and lifestyle options. As a working mother, I also believe that we must not only plan our future but move quickly on developing new ways for our community to connect and move. If I am elected I will work for:
I believe NRMA must continue to lead in these areas while maintaining its commitment to its legendary roadside assistance, its members and the community. If elected, I would be the first Hunter resident to sit on the NRMA board since Kyle Loades retired as Director and President in December 2017 after his 10 year tenure. Kyle has been a great resource during this process and I am most grateful for his endorsement of my nomination.
news Life on the road amid wait for social housing Unable to find a place to stay in Newcastle, Troy Hurst packed up his car and headed for bushland near Nowra. Accompanied by his wife, Pauline Thomas, and two dogs, Jackie and Bella, Mr Hurst said life was a constant struggle. “We’ve used all of our money on fuel to get us here [to Nowra], so now we’ve got to worry about food for tonight,” he told Newcastle Weekly. The couple are among almost 1,200 people on the social housing waitlist in the Newcastle region, with another 960 in Lake Macquarie, 619 in Maitland, 205 in Cessnock, and 135 in Port Stephens. Family and Community Services (FACS) data from 2018 shows wait times in Newcastle are between
five to 10 years for a two or threebedroom property, while those in need of a four-bedroom property can expect to wait more than a decade. Mr Hurst and Ms Thomas, who are on the disability pension, have spent the past six years living in their car, sleeping in a tent, and couchsurfing. The stress of trying to find accommodation had taken a toll, with Mr Hurst suffering a heart attack and battling severe depression, while Ms Thomas was diagnosed with the lung condition emphysema. “We’re both really ill − if I didn’t have Pauline and my two dogs, many times I would’ve done something wrong,” Mr Hurst said. “My dogs are so beautiful and friendly, they don’t leave my side.”

In 2016, the state government announced a 10-year plan that would transform the social housing system. Future Directions for Social Housing in NSW has a vision to
reduce homelessness, provide more housing, and offer more support to help people avoid or successfully transition out of social housing. Continued on page 10

news Parental program’s national recognition

How do we better prepare young people for life after school? This goal, shared by parents and teachers, has fuelled an innovative seven-week program that will be showcased during a national conference at Wollongong in November. Callaghan College Waratah Technology Campus is set to present its work at an Equity Practitioners in Higher Education event in the hope it will benefit students in other states. Class teacher Sheena Roberts, who helped organise the weekly meetings alongside the University of Newcastle, said long-lasting connections were made with parents, while teachers had found their careers reinvigorated. “I wanted to give parents and teachers an opportunity to come together and reflect on some of the
bigger questions around the future of education,” she said. “Our discussion went beyond the families’ personal experience of high school into fundamental areas such as the role of technology, ethical decisions, and how teaching might be done differently and better in the future. “These are the kind of things that will shape how students are taught as society’s and employers’ needs change: it’s all about preparing students for life after school.” The Equity Practitioners in Higher Education in Australasia (EPHEA) and National Association of Enabling Educators in Australia (NAEEA) conference is vital in the equity landscape of education. It aims to highlight and share knowledge on best practice in student and staff equity.
COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS CLOSING SOON The second round of funding for Orica’s 2019 Community Investment Program is now open, with up to $65,000 in grants available to local community groups. The Orica Community Investment Program supports initiatives that seek to promote education and lifelong learning, improve and protect the environment, and build strong communities.
Application forms and supporting documents are available at orica.com/kooragang Applications for this round of funding will close on 30 September, with successful recipients notified in October.

Parent Katrina Fowler, who took part in the Waratah-based campus’ program, said she was excited to promote the initiative at the conference. “My kids have special needs so, for me personally, I’ve always had a lot of engagement with teachers since primary school,” she said. “A lot of us [parents] want to be engaged – it’s a different world to when we went to school. “Sometimes teachers might question why they are doing what they’re doing, but parents engaging them can reignite their flame. “We’ll look to engage people at the conference so they might experience what we did. “It’s just about promoting maybe a more flexible learning system and giving people something to think about.” - Ben Murphy

From page 6 It recognised that the system was originally developed in the 1940s to cater for working families with low incomes, but now needed to support a different demographic – the most vulnerable people in the community. A Communities Plus program aims to deliver up to 23,000 new and replacement social housing dwellings, while the government also pledged to halve homelessness by 2025. Official figures from June 2018 show about 48,000 people are on the social housing waitlist across NSW. However, a report released this month by Hunter-based social and affordable housing provider Compass Housing Services claimed true demand may be up to 261% higher. It used income and asset data from the last census to suggest an
additional 127,000 households were eligible for social housing but had not yet chosen to apply. The report stated that, while the government’s Future Directions for Social Housing in NSW was the most ambitious of its kind, it still only proposed “enough dwellings to house less than half the current waiting list over a 10-year period”. Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp said the numbers did not lie. “On an almost daily basis my office is contacted by people who are experiencing problems with secure housing, ranging from couch-surfers to those living in poor conditions, to people without a roof over their head at all,” he said. “Everyone is entitled to the safety a home provides. “Twelve-hundred people waiting for up to 10 years for this basic security is an absolute disgrace.” - Ben Murphy

news Fight for improvements at royal commission
James Nutt outside County Court of Victoria with Ability Options disability support workers Casey Kairos and Rebecca McLean.
Lake Macquarie resident James Nutt has spoken up about his experiences since a serious assault left him with a significant disability at the age of 19. After being forced into aged care, it took more than a decade for James to finally find suitable services and accommodation.
This was largely due to the efforts of disability support provider Ability Options and a not-for-profit called Summer Foundation. The foundation aims to create, lead and demonstrate long-term changes that stop young people from being forced to live in nursing homes
because there is nowhere else for them to go. James travelled from his Belmont home to Melbourne last week so he could share his story at the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. The hearing, which was about young people in residential aged care, had a particular focus on impact, drivers and appropriateness of allocation policy, as well as how to best support young people who wished to leave residential aged care. “I believe that every Australian should have choice, control, and independence to make our decisions,” James said. “I want everyone to know my story as it should not happen to anyone else.” Ability Options chief executive Julia Squire said her team, as well as Summer Foundation, had supported
Cracked wall?
James to ensure his story was heard. “It took us about 20 to 25 hours to plan the logistics,” she said. “The focus was to ensure flights and accommodation were suitable for James’ complex support needs and for him to have the support of the disability support workers he has chosen. “James’ story could help change services for people with a disability forever and we are proud to be part of his efforts.” While James’ flights, transfers and accommodation had been taken care of by the royal commission, he still needed to dip into his National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding to cover additional costs. The next hearing will take place from 7 to 11 October, with a focus on diversity in aged care. Visit agedcare. royalcommission.gov.au for more. - Ben Murphy

news Former station set for transformation
An artist’s impression of how the new centre will look.
The former Civic railway station in Newcastle’s CBD will be transformed into a new visitor information centre. Newcastle council is set to take possession of the building following the state government-led project to open up and beautify the area between Hunter Street and the Newcastle Museum. The site will then be remodelled
into a purpose-built centre where tourists can access information, as well as tourist maps, brochures, event details, and souvenirs. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes believed it would create a dynamic, contemporary destination for visitors. “Tourism is a vital part of the Hunter Region, contributing more
than $900 million annually to the local economy,” she said. “The new visitor information centre will provide a purposedesigned space to enhance the city’s tourism experience and ensure visitors discover the best of what the wider Newcastle region has to offer. “The centre’s design will maintain the rail heritage and character of the site while being reimagined with a focus on customer experience and smart technologies, complementing the old with the new to reflect a contemporary Newcastle.” The centre is expected to open early next year and will replace The Newcastle Shop at the Newcastle Museum. The shop was trialled as a popup retail and information space in November 2017 and became an accredited visitor information centre in September 2018.
Boost in paramedics Twelve paramedics and an extra ambulance are expected to be available to treat patients in the Maitland area by Christmas. The additional ambulance means that two primary transport vehicles will operate from the new Rutherford Ambulance Station on the day shift, along with an Ambulance Rescue truck. “I have been advocating to the minister strongly on this issue since we won the fight for a fully public hospital in Maitland,” Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison said. “I would like to thank all residents of Maitland who have shared their very personal stories of waiting for an ambulance.” Ms Aitchison said the government had indicated the Rutherford Ambulance Station would open before Christmas.

Some might be lonely, others socially isolated or vulnerable. Whatever the circumstance, Belmont Neighbourhood Centre hosts a free community lunch in a bid to bring people together on R U OK? Day, an annual event which encourages meaningful conversations and supports anyone struggling with life. Belmont Neighbourhood Centre coordinator of communications and services, Chris Brown, said this year’s luncheon proved to be its biggest yet. “This event is more about being social and out in the community environment,” he said. “A lot of people who come to the centre might be a bit vulnerable, not have many friends, or be isolated. “It’s about reaching out to people who are lonely or on their own.” R U OK? Day promotes the notfor-profit organisation’s vision for a world where everyone is connected and protected from suicide. In 1995, much-loved Barry Larkin was far from okay. His suicide left family and friends in deep grief and with endless questions. Fourteen years later, Barry’s son, Gavin, chose to champion one question – ‘Are you OK?’ – to try and protect other families from the pain
his endured. Gavin realised that a national campaign was needed to genuinely change behaviour and, from that, R U OK? was born. Mr Brown said the initiative sent an important message. “We played the story of R U OK? Day, where the idea came from, the story of its creator, and how it has grown,” he said. “While it was mainly about enjoying each other’s company, there were a couple of people there with their own mental health challenges. “A few mothers came along who had had their first child, which can bring its own challenges. “We don’t have any formal program for parenting, but we just provide a space for them – we want them to know they can come and be with the community.” Belmont Neighbourhood Centre hosts regular programs, including the men’s shed, first aid course, a toy library, University of the Third Age (U3A), Habitat in Harmony Community Garden, and Weight Watchers. A challenge has been put out to Lower Hunter residents to use four buckets of water less per day after the introduction of level one restrictions in the region this week. With dams at their lowest levels in more than two decades, Hunter Water stressed the amount of water used in homes had a significant impact on its storages. “Saving four buckets of water is all it takes to make a difference,” Hunter Water’s executive drought lead, Darren Cleary, said. “While level one restrictions will focus on outdoor water use, there are plenty of simple and easy things we can do every day that will save our precious resource. “One of the easiest ways to save water is by reducing showers to four minutes.
“We know that the shower is the largest discretionary water user in the home, making up more than a third of daily water usage. “Every minute reduced in the shower is a bucket of water saved.” Level one restrictions started in the Hunter Region on Monday. For homes and businesses, they include: no sprinklers; wash your vehicle on the grass using a trigger nozzle; no hosing of hard surfaces; and outdoor watering before 10am or after 4pm with a trigger nozzle. The last time water restrictions were introduced was in December 1994. Hunter Water warned level two restrictions might be in place by the end of the year if dry conditions persist. Trekkers return from outback A Hunter-based team of 25 trekkers has raised almost $150,000 for Indigenous education and health research. The University of Newcastle’s Ikara-Flinders Ranges Challenge saw the group, which was made up of staff, alumini and community members, complete a 100-kilometre walk over five days through the remote Heysen Trail in the South Australian outback. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Indigenous Australians are nearly three times more likely than non-
Indigenous Australians to experience high levels of psychological distress, have hearing problems as children, and bilateral vision loss. The Ikara-Flinders Ranges Challenge was the second trek of its kind that the university had organised to raise awareness and funds to tackle these challenges. In 2017, a 65-kilometre Larapinta Trail Challenge raised $152,432. With donations being accepted until Thursday 31 October, the Ikara team still has a chance to reach its target of $155,000. news Play transcends age
Mt Carmel Retirement Village residents in playgroup with children from Five Star Family Day Care. Photo: Peter Stoop
Age is no barrier to fun when residents of Mt Carmel Retirement Village in Maitland get together with children from Metford-based Five Star Family Day Care. The daycare centre last week had its first playgroup visit to Metford Community Hall, where children enjoyed story time, songs and play with the residents. Child Care Coordinator Maria James said she and her colleague Kim had previously organised visits
to the retirement village every month since March 2018, and decided to meet at the hall for a change of scenery. She said they would probably do the same once each school term. “Both the children and the residents love it; their faces just light up,” she said. “They’ve built a good rapport and it’s great to see the residents’ personalities – especially the ones who are a little bit quieter – come out.” The playgroup involves a variety of hands-on activities, from Playdough to building blocks to animal farm toys. Usually, about three or four educators and a dozen children aged nought to six visit the retirement village. Ten residents went on the excursion to the hall last week. - Georgia Osland
Bushfire season ahead
A bushfire at Killingworth late last month. Photo: Peter Stoop
Off the back of Get Ready Weekend (14-15 September), Hunter residents have been urged to prepare for the bushfire season ahead. NSW has already seen a spate of bushfires in recent weeks, including one at Killingworth and another at Belmont that threatened homes. NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said, with 95% of the state drought affected and a forecast of ongoing warm and dry conditions, now was
the time to get ready. Every resident can and should take four crucial steps to keep their families and property safe from bushfire. They are: discuss what to do if a bushfire threatens your home; prepare your home and get it ready for bushfire season; know the bushfire alert levels; and keep all bushfire information numbers and websites handy, including the Fires Near Me smartphone app, which is available via iTunes and Google Play.

Residents within the 277-acre parcel of land at Butterwick all share a common goal. “They’re conscious of having a lesser footprint on the planet,” Shepherds Ground founder Lucie Bruvel says. “That is the one thing that connects all people that have bought in here – that environmental awareness.” Shepherds Ground promotes sustainability through all aspects of living and farming; regenerative agriculture and farming practices; organic and chemical free principles; and affordable housing. It also boasts intergenerational living, with members ranging from two to 83 years of age. They come from a wide variety of career

backgrounds, including emergency medicine, teachers, engineers, a plumber, and farmers. Each member has a 99-year licence to occupy a certain plot of land, with the rest locked up for farming and bush regeneration. “My husband is a farmer – he’s just starting up again with organic farming,” Bruvel adds. “To buy a property and then set your farm up, it’s a big expense. “Whereas here, the land is already owned so you just have licences to use certain areas of land. “That makes it much more cost effective and there’s also help on hand if you need it. “It is really close to town, so you can still have a job in town but then come to this more quiet, peaceful area.”
Shepherds Ground’s practices were on display at a Spring Open Day over the weekend. A village tour, inspection of two hemp masonry homes, and sustainable living and construction information were provided during the day. Supported by Maitland-based organisation Slow Food Hunter Valley, it also offered plants, seedlings and pots, flowers, vegetables, herbs, ornamentals and honey for sale. The event was a part of Sustainable House Day, which aims to open the door to sustainable living through providing tours of some of Australia’s most environmentally progressive homes. A Daniel Fabrizio double powered Edgeworth to its third Northern NSW NPL grand final win in the past five seasons at Magic Park on Sunday. The Eagles had to withstand a fast start from premiers Maitland FC. Magpies star Nick Cowburn hit the crossbar from a brilliant free kick, while speedster Ryan Clarke’s shot was blocked by a last-ditch tackle.
A real alternative to aged care
Edgeworth, playing in its fifth straight decider but in search of its first victory since 2016, grew into the match as attackers Keanu Moore and Fabrizio created chances. Despite frantic, end-to-end action, it took until the 81st minute for the deadlock to be broken. Moore headed a Josh Rose cross into a dangerous area and Fabrizio bundled it over the line, before then unleashing a powerful drive in the 88th minute to wrap up the victory. Edgeworth captain and defensive rock Josh Evans was named man of the match, while veteran Daniel McBreen ended his illustrious career in style. Maitland will now play Devonport City Strikers in the National Premier Leagues quarter-final this Saturday 21 September. Kick-off is at 1pm at Cooks Square Park, East Maitland.

Goannas in final
Iffland rounds out perfect season The Lake Macquarie athlete won her seventh stop in a row at Bilbao, Spain, from the 21-metre platform at the weekend to wrap up her fourth straight title. Known as the ‘Dominator from Down Under’, Iffland ended the 2019 campaign on 1,200 points, well clear of Great Britain’s Jessica Macaulay on 670 and third-placed Canadian Lysanne Richard, who recorded 660 points. “I’m still pinching myself really,” Iffland said. “This year was amazing for me and I just want to keep this confidence going. “I want to keep enjoying the sport as much as I have this season. “I knew I had to put in a good [performance], and I really wanted to take the points and the clean sweep.” In the men’s competition, England’s Gary Hunt claimed his fifth win of the season ahead of Mexican Jonathan Paredes and fellow Brit Aidan Heslop. Hunt finished on a total of 1,160 points, with Paredes in second on 750 and American Andy Jones in third on 540.

Cessnock will tackle Western Suburbs in the Newcastle Rugby League first grade decider at McDonald Jones Stadium this weekend. The Goannas finished fifth at the end of the regular season but downed Maitland 14-10 and South Newcastle 32-28 to reach the preliminary final. A 34-8 victory over Central then booked Cessnock’s spot in the Business Plaza Cup grand final. It was a smoother run for minor premiers Western Suburbs after the Rosellas thrashed Central 50-10 in the major semi-final a fortnight ago. Gates will open at 9.30am this Sunday 22 September, before Central and Souths clash in the Monarch Blues tag grand final at 9.40am. Lakes United take on Western Suburbs in the under-19s from 10.55am, before Western Suburbs and Maitland contest the open grade at 2.20pm. Western Suburbs and Souths will play in the reserve grade decider from 1.45pm, while the first grade clash kicks off at 3.30pm. Visit newcastlerugbyleague.com.au for more.

Step out with confidence
‘Relief
from your varicose veins is one step away.’ – Dr Zil Dr Zil endeavours to make laser treatment for varicose veins more widely available to those in need.
For a painless and quick procedure to treat varicose veins, visit The Vein Institute in Sydney CBD. A pioneer in bringing surgery-free treatment of varicose veins to Australia, Dr Zil has established clinics throughout Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, using state-of-the-art non-invasive laser technology. Located in Sydney CBD, at 227 Elizabeth Street, the team at The Vein Institute are committed to bringing your vascular system back to good health. According to Dr Zil, 30-35% of the population, particularly women, are affected by varicose veins. A predisposition to developing them is largely hereditary but also influenced by contributing factors such as standing for long hours each day, pre-existing injuries, pregnancy and the contraceptive pill. “They are not just a cosmetic problem,” says Dr Zil. “If left untreated there is an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis and the potential for vein disease to become chronic.” Treating varicose veins effectively means your blood is able to fi nd its way back to your heart more efficiently, improving the functions of the circulatory system. In the past, varicose vein treatment has commonly been resolved using surgery, meaning patients require admission into hospital, general anaesthetic and at least a week of downtime for recovery. This new age laser technology allows for a walk-in walk-out treatment which is both quick and painless with no recovery time required. Dr Zil says the fi rst step is booking a consultation with an expert to conclude if treatment is necessary. “Not all varicose vein treatment is necessary; if the vein is small and

the leg is healthy we advise against it,” he says. As a general rule Dr Zil advises medical treatment if the varicose veins are affecting your life. “If there is any swelling or pigmentation of the lower legs, if you are getting aching and pain after a long day of standing, you need medical treatment. There is a cosmetic angle as well; if the look of the varicose vein concerns you, that is affecting your life as well.” Varicose veins are easy to diagnose on the surface, however, these leg veins often have a deeper source. At the time of consultation, ultrasound technology will be used to screen
the veins and assess their extent. If treatment is required, a microfi bre laser will be inserted into the leg using a local anaesthetic in a process which is undertaken in under an hour and requires two follow-up appointments within a 6-8 week period. The same vein may require some injection treatment during these review appointments. According to Dr Zil, this type of laser treatment is a mainstay in other parts of the world with a 95% success rate. He endeavours to make this technique more widely available to those in need here in Australia.

Coffee granita by David Rosa
Caffeine fix Aussies’ love affair with coffee and how you too can become a master roaster, as told by David Rosa. This is an edited extract from The Artisan Roaster by David Rosa, $79.95, available via theartisanroaster.com
What’s the ongoing attraction of roasting coffee? Roasted coffee is a sexy beast. That satin-brown bean colour, the incredible aroma… and the flavour is undeniable. Chocolate admittedly runs a close second, but you need half a tonne of sugar added to it to make it palatable. What initially attracted me to roasting coffee was how natural a process it was. Simply add heat at the correct rate and time, and around 15 minutes later – voila, it’s done! No added ingredients, artificial colours or flavourings! The green side of coffee production was also still a very natural process, although granted, the washed-coffee process can be rather waterintensive. Decaffeinated coffee is another story. I also liked the blend of art and science in coffee roasting. You need to be in tune with both sides of this equation. The trend of late has been to focus on the science side, with the onset of data-logging software and profile roasting semi/fullyautomated roasting machines. I sincerely believe that this
technology has helped with consistency and quality. I do, however, feel that good master roasters also need to have a feel for the roasting process itself. This is the art side, and one that I believe is crucial. Younger master roasters appear obsessed with the science, and I guess it’s a natural side effect of the geek culture/connected society of today. However, all the science in the world won’t get around the natural variation in the green beans that you will encounter on a day-to-day basis. For this, you need feel. This can’t be taught with a textbook. It only comes with experience, mentoring and time. This is what I grew to love about becoming a master roaster. If you love cooking and its various techniques (like applying the correct heat at the right times) and you love describing flavours, you will become a good master roaster. My last tip here is to say this: become an artisan coffee roaster only if you think you will love it and are willing to put in the time and effort. This will help you get through the highs and the lows, making it all worthwhile in the end.
An easy, light dessert and afterdinner coffee all rolled into one. 500ml freshly brewed, strong black coffee (we used 30g ground coffee in a cafetière and brewed for 7 mins) 80g golden caster sugar 100ml coffee liqueur (we used Kahlúa) To serve 1 tub mascarpone 50g dark chocolate, grated
Pour the coffee into a jug and stir in the sugar until it has dissolved. Add the coffee liqueur and leave to cool completely. Once cold, pour the mixture into a freezable container and put in the freezer for 1 hour. Mix it with a fork – you should start to see ice crystals forming at the edges. Return to the freezer for 20 minutes then stir again. Repeat once or twice more until the granita is all clumps of ice. Serve in glasses or bowls. For a more indulgent version, add a dollop of mascarpone and a grating of dark chocolate.

SWAN ST DELI & LARDER advertising moment
DELI OFFERS PERSONAL TOUCH One of few suburbs left with a ‘butcher, baker, candlestick maker’ feel, Morpeth has a new kid on the block. Swan St Deli & Larder is a small goods store with a personal touch. Owner Sharon Bull and her husband Jason opened the store a few months ago. Many locals would know the Bulls as the owners of Spar Express supermarket, which they have operated for 11 years. “In that time, we’ve gotten to know everyone by name – we’ve even been to weddings and funerals,” Sharon said.
Swan St Deli & Larder has recently opened in Morpeth’s main street.
“Morpeth draws people from Wallalong, Largs, Brandy Hill, Duckenfield and Berry Park. “They come from all over to do their shopping in one place.” But there was one thing missing from the supermarket’s offering: the humble barbecue chicken. “The shop isn’t big enough for a deli, so, when this space became available with a grease trap, it was perfect,” Sharon added. At long last, locals needn’t look far for quality meats, cheeses, coffee and other fine food products. Situated directly opposite from Spar Express, Swan St Deli & Larder sells everything from meat and cheese (both pre-packaged and cut to order) to home-cooked meals like Sharon’s mum’s lasagne recipe, as well as oils and honey. And of course, the highly sought-after barbecue chook. What’s more, staff can make cheese platters and hampers to order – perfect for a picnic or as a gift for that special someone. So, stop in and say hello to a familiar face. The deli is open from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday; 7am to 5pm Saturdays; and 7am to 5pm Sundays.

A therapeutic outlet Becoming a mother led Lee Sullivan to unearth the therapeutic, nutritional and sustainable benefits of food gardening. She had always wanted to grow her own produce, something that became even more apparent after the arrival of her first son, Judah. “I was very conscious of what was on the food we ate, and I started to realise we didn’t really know,” Lee told Newcastle Weekly. But her grand visions of an abundant veggie garden at she and her husband Tim’s home in Swansea were soon eclipsed by the reality of their cramped courtyard. Nevertheless, Lee invested in a few raised garden beds and quality soil, in which the family grew tomatoes, cucumber and zucchini one summer. “I found it very therapeutic to have ‘me’ time in the garden, especially since I suffered from mild

post-partum depression and felt like I lost myself a bit after having Judah,” Lee said. To chronicle her gardening journey and share useful tips and tricks, she set up an Instagram account – @urbanveggiepatch – which has amassed more than 80,000 followers in about four years. As their family grew, they moved to a bigger home with a backyard in Blacksmiths, and not long after, their second son, Jack, was born. Lee said she relished the opportunity to involve the whole family in their food’s origin and watch it grow from seedling to harvest. “You can’t beat food fresh from the garden; Judah loves picking cucumbers and eating them like apples,” she said. “Not only that, it’s a sustainable way of living, when you think about the miles your food travels to the

Gardening Australia guru and major drawcard Costa Georgiadis (this week’s cover star) will conduct a Q&A session with Lee from 10am to

From country to coast, A Painter’s Journey was five years in the making. That’s about how long East Maitland artist Malcolm Sands has been travelling to Orange each year to visit his uncle. “One time, he suggested going home via Bylong Valley instead of the Blue Mountains,” Sands told Newcastle Weekly. “The landforms are just amazing – the way they move as you drive down the road that twists and turns – and they’ve crept into my heart over the last five years. “I have a daughter that lives in Katoomba, so now I go one way via the mountains and one way via the valley.” The series of paintings follows Sands’ journey from Orange through the Bylong Valley

Don’t forget houseplants this spring IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
Spring has arrived, but with all the activity establishing veggie gardens, fertilising and sprucing up lawns, it is easy to overlook indoor plants. They will defi nitely need some attention after the amount of heating they’ve been subjected to over winter.
I confess, I have a dead Madonna Lily. How is that possible? All they need is water, but it was in a corner near an air conditioning vent. It’s no excuse, but time to turn over a new leaf. What constitutes an indoor plant? My answer is whatever
you can grow in the conditions applicable to your home. Yes, this is a pretty broad statement, but basically all houseplants were grown in the garden before we experimented, introducing mainly shade-loving plants to the interior. These experiments no doubt occurred in colder climates, where gardens were covered in snow and buffeted by freezing winds – how else could they survive but to move indoors? Glasshouses and conservatories grew out of this need; even roses were cultivated under glass. Now to today, our homes are more open to sunlight and windows. This works for plants as they object to being shut in a corner – a good example being Ficus lyrata (Fiddleleaf fig). It is often the case of experimenting to see which plants work where; for example,
Aspdestra, Madonna Lily (I know, I just killed her), Kentia Palm and Parlour Palm will all survive in lowlit areas. There are now some greatcoloured foliage plants suitable as houseplants. One of my favourites is Ficus Burgandy, a hardy plant with large, glossy leaves, which look fabulous when glossed with white oil.

Spring Time Tidy Up As the warmer months begin to heat up, Spring time becomes the perfect season to reorganise and revitalise your ideal life and be happy. If you’re thinking about downsizing but have a few roadblocks in the way, such as decluttering and tidying up the spare room, the garage, the hallway cupboard, (or all of those)… now’s the season to look into the Spring time tidy up.

buying an item that doesn’t ‘Spark Joy’. This mentality crosses over to all aspects and you learn a certain structure that helps you live a life of joy. You begin to change and that can help with your money, health, relationships and mentally; it infuses into every aspect of your life. Many Ingenia Lifestyle residents fi nd decluttering and downsizing their home has allowed them to live a life where they can lock up to leave and travel rather than cleaning and maintaining a large house.
GQ: You can’t live an ideal life if you’re living in the past. Having Baby Boomers understand if they can stop buying, it saves them a lot of money. Money that can be used going on a cruise etc. IL: What advice do you have for their downsizing journey?

GQ: Downsizers know what life is about and what makes them happy. They know life is short and life is hard and things can change. If things are going to stop reaching their ideal happiness, then they will let those items go.
IL: Is it possible for a couple to let go of 40 years of stuff?
IL: How can you unlock other areas after a tidy up?
GQ: Yes, absolutely. It shouldn’t be about ‘letting go’. It’s about choosing what you love and fi nding other ways your items could be
GQ: It naturally happens. It operates in a parallel system. After a tidy up, you question why you have wasted time and money on

The fate of starry-eyed Noah and Allie, young adults falling in love in North Carolina in 1940, is unapologetically writ large in this red-blooded adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ best-seller. In flashback, the painful contents of a journal relate the disruption of the burgeoning affair between poetry-loving poor guy Noah (Ryan Gosling, pictured) and well-to-do society gal Allie (Rachel McAdams). Have your hanky ready.

Cheryl Strayed’s surname was perhaps an omen on how her life would pan out. She strayed off course in her marriage, her health and her emotional connections. Then she set off on an 1800km trek along America’s Pacific Crest Trail. In this take on Strayed’s bestselling memoir of the same name, Reese Witherspoon (pictured) gives one of her best performances in years.

Hugh Jackman (pictured) dons Wolverine’s claws for the final time. It is the not-too-distant future, and a bitter and broken Logan is trying to keep a low profile as he cares for the ailing Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart), whose deteriorating brain is wreaking havoc all over the place. Into this desolate reality comes a young girl, (Dafne Keen), the first new mutant seen in dozens of years – and she has a connection to our brooding hero.

celebrity birthday WILL SMITH 25 September 1968 Will is going to be busy playing peacemaker amongst those he loves and cares about. People generally trust him and he is capable of seeing both sides of any given situation which enables him to restore peace and harmony amongst his family and colleagues. He is capable of tolerating a great deal from others but will not tolerate being treated like a doormat. Working with a team will bring him a great deal more satisfaction than trying to go things alone.

CAPRICORN: 22 DEC – 20 JAN
If old health issues resurface, this is not the time to put things off. Unfortunately, we’re not getting any younger and certain things need to be addressed. At work, talk of duty and effort may seem a bit dull, but the resulting rewards will make it all worthwhile.
This will be a time of mental exploration and you could decide to embark on a research journey or take the time to read those books you’ve been putting off absorbing. Those with children may need to give more attention to their education or extracurricular hobbies and interests.
Some aspect of your life is going to seem insecure, probably on an emotional level, and you may find it hard to face the facts that confront you. Rather than trying to resolve the situation through alcohol or medication, try regular exercise and meditation to settle any inner worries or anxiousness.
You may have interactions with foreigners, thereby learning about them and their way of life, your family may move to another country, or there may be people entering the family who are from a different cultural background and this could initiate some long distance journeys.
Your feelings could be hard to control, especially if you have to deal with adults acting like two-year-old children! You need to be careful of getting into fiery emotional disputes in your haste to get everything done and dusted. Hollywood movies and amusing hobbies will be of interest.
LEO: 23 JULY – 23 AUG
SCORPIO: 24 OCT – 22 NOV
If you’ve been in the habit of living for the moment, you will start to think ahead and will no longer be prepared to allow your credit card debt to grow. You certainly won’t be prepared to risk your money on any fly by night schemes.
Friendships with males will be important and you will become slightly less attached to your family, finding your time is diverted by outside considerations. In the realm of friendships, there will be changes as you move on to newer, more dynamic types of people.
Health or legal matters might enter your private life. You will be more aware of the mystical elements of life and might have some kind of psychic experience, possibly for the first time. This transition will make your intuition and hunches strong and you might even develop mediumistic qualities.
GEMINI: 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
Your energy levels are high and you’re ready to take advantage of new opportunities that will begin to present themselves to you. There could be issues in regards to the men in your family or other male associates and you may have to take on some extra responsibility for them.
SAGITTARIUS: 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES: 20 FEB – 20 MAR
If you’re selling a product or service or work in retail, buyers will be more receptive. Men are likely to be particularly helpful to you this month. Business methods will be important, even if your work is not strictly in the business world.
The communications side of business will be important and you’ll need to keep in touch with current ideas and methods. You will have to deal with the marketing aspects of sales, which means finding ways to present your organisation’s image attractively.
TAURUS: 21 APR – 21 MAY
You could be feeling more moody, emotional and overly sensitive this week. Regardless of your basic nature and outlook on life, you will act and react in a far more emotional manner and you will be more focused on your private and personal aspects of life.

My favourite things NEWCASTLE MUSEUM Newcastle Museum is an incredibly special part of Newcastle. Our hard-working museum was rated with a 98% satisfaction rate by our visitors this year and I have never introduced myself to someone without them saying, “You have the best job!” There is always more to discover at the museum.
LIVE MUSIC The live music scene in Newcastle is thriving. I can enjoy a Samoan gospel choir to punk to jazz to dance music all over this city. A big thank-you to all the musos, dancers, sound engineers, promoters and venues that make this city alive and bring me such joy.
TALENTED AND UNUSUAL PEOPLE I love to surround myself with unusual and talented people, from my outstanding chef husband Jason and creative kids, to my incredible team at work, to artists, musicians, tradies, advocates – anyone really. I find people who are good at what they do exciting. I love learning what makes them tick.
Julie Baird
NEWCASTLE MUSEUM DIRECTOR
Julie is the Director of Newcastle Museum, one of Australia’s largest local government-funded museums. She has been at the museum since 2002 and was part of the small team that moved and redeveloped it, re-opening in Honeysuckle in 2011. Her career focus has been to spread knowledge about history and museums in unusual or popularised forums, working with communities as broad as embroidery guilds and TV audiences to female prisoners and bikie clubs. Julie was recently appointed to the Artform Assessment Board Museums & History for the NSW government. Most people in Newcastle know Julie from her former weekly ABC 1233 radio spot, “Julie’s Favourite Things”, media appearances on Tattoo Tales or Tony Robinsons Tour of Duty or from her unusual lack of embarrassment while dancing to live music around town. 70
MAITLAND I love Maitland, with its blend of agricultural past, historic buildings and innovative cultural future. Two of my convict ancestors were sent to work on farms in Maitland as punishment for escaping from Sydney. I think it’s appropriate that I am doing the same thing 200 years later.
ACCESSIBILITY There is no point in knowledge that is not shared. Museums should be understandable, entertaining and informative. I am proud that Newcastle Museum has won multiple awards for accessibility since 2011 and I’m excited about some of the new fantastic, inclusive programs.
