This week... From the editor Spring has arrived, and not a moment too soon. The season of renewal spurs housekeeping and change, be it in the form of a wardrobe clean-out, home renovations or anything in between. We've got lots in store for you this spring, kicking off with our cover story this week on Toranafest – a celebration of the iconic Holden Torana. I love the sweet bubblegum-pink ride front and centre that belongs to a member of the Hunter Valley Torana Club (the oldest in Australia). The event spans the weekend of 14 and 15 September in Maitland, with proceeds to support Ronald McDonald House and Dog Rescue Newcastle. You can read more about that on page 13. If personal development is one of your spring goals, I recommend you take a look at page 34, where we delve into the realm of bullet journaling with a little help from Alyss Thomas, author of The Journal Writer's Companion. What's a bullet journal, you might ask? The answer is, whatever you want it to be – a daily planner, sketchbook, dream diary and more. Check out the exercise on page 34 as a jumping-off point. You'd be surprised by what your unfettered thoughts might reveal (I know I was!) - Georgia Osland

news Historic vessel offers back-in-time experience

Volunteer Keith Lowe aboard William the Fourth in Newcastle harbour. Photo: Peter Stoop

`An historic replica steamship has returned to offer a “back-in-time” experience in Newcastle harbour for almost 12 months after volunteers worked tirelessly to restore it. William the Fourth is a tribute to Australia’s first ocean-going paddle wheel steam-powered ship, built at Clarence Town in the early 1830s. The replica was first launched

by Hazel Hawke, the late ex-wife of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, in 1987 and operated on Newcastle harbour for 14 years until a boiler tube leak put it out of service. In 2008, Newcastle council opted to hand the ship over to William the Fourth Incorporated, a communityowned organisation. The group’s attempts to restore it

were initially thwarted by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) but, five years later, serious works were under way. William the Fourth Incorporated secretary, Bob Cook, said the vessel had become fully operational after countless hours of volunteer labour and fundraising support. “It operates by a high-powered diesel engine with a propeller,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “While it has modern technology, it still looks like it used to – the only thing we’re missing is some nasty black smoke up the top.” When the penal settlement first began at Newcastle in 1801, ships were the only form of transport. Within three decades, the growing coal trade enabled the era of steam ships and, in 1831, a shipyard was established at Clarence Town to construct the original William the Fourth.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROGRAM APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN The second round of funding for Orica’s 2019 Community Investment Program is now open, with up to $65,000 in grants available to local community groups. The Orica Community Investment Program supports initiatives that seek to promote education and lifelong learning, improve and protect the environment, and build strong communities.

Application forms and supporting documents are available at orica.com/kooragang Applications for this round of funding will close on 30 September, with successful recipients notified in October.

Mr Cook said it had served as a testimony to the city’s tough maritime and industrial history. “With the replica of the 1831 steam-powered ship, we think it tells a good story of our maritime history and the beginning of coal-trading in Newcastle,” he said. “It is a back-in-time experience to see what life and transport was like in the early 1800s.” During the replica’s construction, hundreds of people purchased engraved copper nails, which are still in the ship’s hull, and, since then, thousands more have enjoyed the experience of William the Fourth. Harbour cruises and charters are available on the fourth Sunday of every month, starting at 11am and 2pm. Visit williamthefourth.com.au for more information. - Ben Murphy

news Plans for precinct at Morisset Morisset will be home to the region’s biggest concert venue under plans to build a $235 million entertainment, family and cultural precinct. The proposal, which was unveiled last week, would see the former Morisset Country Club transformed into a precinct known as Cedar Mill – a nod to the timber industry’s rich history in the area. The project is being driven by local resident and businessman Paul Lambess of Winarch Capital. It promises to feature Australia’s largest water splash pad, as well as cafés, restaurants and outdoor entertainment, across a 72-hectare span. Work on four activity areas – a family and community space, tourism accommodation, lifestyle living, and a cultural, arts and event space – is expected to start immediately if the project receives

development approval from Lake Macquarie council. The concert and event space will account for about 40%, or 28 hectares, and aims to attract major international acts. Mr Lambess believes Cedar Mill will create a “vibrant and growing community”. “As a father of a young family, we want to create a true community destination that will be accessible to all of the local community and be a destination that will drive economic development for the region,” Mr Lambess said. “Our family and community area will be a delight to senses, with gardens, petting zoo, café, restaurant and bakery set across nine hectares – it will be the place to meet and relax. “We are a strong believer in the Morisset community and we look forward to working with council to

An artist’s impression of the precinct, which would be known as Cedar Mill.

see this project become a reality.” Dantia, a Lake Macquarie-based economic development company, predicted the proposed development would create about 1,224 jobs during construction and more than 470 permanent roles once operational. The city’s mayor, Kay Fraser, said it was an exciting announcement for Morisset and Lake Macquarie. “Morisset is a strategic economic centre and its location, just off the M1 and close to the Morisset train station, makes it ideal for this kind of

investment,” she said. “The plans for Cedar Mill are very ambitious and it is wonderful to see such a vision that will translate to more jobs and an ongoing injection into our local economy.” Winarch Capital expect to have the family and community area, as well as the cultural, arts and event space, operational by September 2020, pending approval. The proposed development sits within the current zoning parameters of RE2.

news Koala hospital full steam ahead

Three-and-a-half years in the making, construction is under way on a $3 million koala hospital in Port Stephens. The state-of-the-art facility will feature an operating theatre, intensive care unit, rehabilitation

care and a sanctuary, which will be open to the public as an ecotourism drawcard. Upon completion in March, the hospital will house up to 30 koalas at a time, including 15 in the display colony. The existing Treescape facility is operated by Port Stephens Koalas, a volunteer organisation that rescues and treats injured koalas, predominantly from the Tomaree and Tilligerry peninsulas, but also from as far south as Morisset and as east as Muswellbrook, right up to the Port Macquarie border. Secretary Ron Land praised the state government and Port Stephens council for working together to give the local koala population a better chance of survival. “[At the construction announcement] we had the

Minister for Energy and Environment, Matt Kean, and his shadow minister, Kate Washington, singing from the same song sheet,” Mr Land said. “There’s a sincere commitment. “Finally, all parties realise how perilous the situation is.” In 2018, 58 koalas were rescued or found dead and another 31 released or relocated, clocking up 1,348 total days in care. Sadly, too many are wiped out by natural disasters, development and habitat loss. Port Stephens Koalas are on-call 24/7 to respond to rescue calls, and will continue to work at capacity until the new hospital is built, bringing much-needed extra resources. Go to portstephenskoalas.com. au to donate or adopt a koala. - Georgia Osland

Community funding open Round five of the Newcastle Port Community Contribution Fund is now open. Established by the state government, the fund provides financial assistance to projects that enhance or maintain infrastructure that boosts entertainment and amenity around the port. Past successful initiatives include Projecting Newcastle, the installation of state-of-the-art laser projectors to beautify the city’s events; and Cottage Creek Bank amenity works between the rail line and Honeysuckle Drive. Funding requests of between $10,000 and $500,000 can be made. Applications are open until Monday 7 October. Go to nsw.gov. au/improving-nsw/regional-nsw/ nccp-fund

news Leader’s honour

Exploring options

Australia’s first female Lord Mayor will be immortalised in bronze in front of the former Civic Station in the heart of Newcastle. The late Joy Cummings OAM, who served as Newcastle Lord Mayor between 1974 and 1984, died in 2003 at the age of 79. Current Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes believed the statue was a fitting piece of public art for Newcastle’s civic heart. “Joy was a trailblazer for women in leadership and inspired Novocastrians through her community spirit and love for our great city and our people,” Cr Nelmes said. “It’s fitting that Joy’s pioneering legacy will be able to be showcased in such an amazing and enduring way.” The bronze statue, part of ongoing revitalisation works, is currently being developed by Mudgee artist Margot Stephens. “To work on the portrait of such an intelligent, courageous and determined woman has been inspirational,” Ms Stephens said. The tribute will be delivered to the forecourt of the new ‘Museum Place’ by the end of the year.

Pledge to protect

The Newcastle Maritime Museum Society has decided to continue negotiations and explore all options for the future of its valuable 7,500-piece collection. On 5 August, Newcastle council’s chief executive, Jeremy Bath, announced it would retire trusteeship within a week over claims the society had failed to recognise an agreement, which stated it would eventually display the artefacts at Newcastle Museum. However, members of the society last week called for the council’s cooperation while it sought a better solution. The collection is currently being stored at a Carrington industrial site, but the lease expires in September 2020. “We are asking council to apply its role of working with the community it serves to help us find a way to achieve something more valuable from our rich maritime heritage,” the society’s president, Bob Cook, said. The society decided it would report on its progress during a special general meeting within the next six months.

Australia’s largest child protection advocate is urging Newcastle to take the pledge to protect kids from child sexual assault. National charity Bravehearts will host the 23rd White Balloon Day – an annual event that raises funds, awareness, and inspires a conversation about society’s greatest scourge. Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston has called on community members to show their commitment to the cause by signing the online pledge ahead of the event on Friday 6 September. “They say it takes a village to raise a child and the same goes for protecting them,” she said. “It is not enough for only parents and people who work with children to watch out for them. “It doesn’t matter what one’s job is, we all have a responsibility to speak up if we see something that doesn’t seem right when it comes to children.” The pledge can be found on the Bravehearts website. Visit bravehearts.org.au to sign it or call 1800 272 831 for support.

Eighteen determined cyclists are set to ride rough across 535 kilometres to raise funds for charity. The annual Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Northern NSW Ride for Sick Kids will take place over five days, starting on Tuesday 10 September, as participants strive to raise $200,000 for seriously ill or injured children and their families. The group will begin at McDonald’s Inverell and travel south through the picturesque New England North West region, stopping at Armidale, Tamworth, Scone and Singleton, before crossing the finish line at John Hunter Children’s Hospital on Saturday 14 September. Last year, RMHC opened its

doors to more than 770 families and provided over 7,750 nights of accommodation – helping to keep families close together. RMHC Northern NSW chief executive and 2019 rider, Ross Bingham, said he had met many families who had stayed at the house and heard countless stories of strength and bravery. “It is these moments that motivate me to jump in the saddle each year and help raise funds to support families with a sick or injured child,” he said. “Events like Ride for Sick Kids are crucial in helping to raise awareness and much-needed funds so that we can keep our doors open to families when they need us the most.” Visit fundraise.rmhc.org.au for more information or to donate.

Thousands to celebrate iconic model In late September 1979, legendary racer Peter Brock and co-driver Jim Richards broke the Bathurst lap record in a Holden Torana A9X on their way to a dominant win from start to finish. Almost four decades later, the Hunter Valley Torana Club – the oldest of its kind in Australia – is set to celebrate this iconic sporting moment, as well as its own 40th anniversary. Toranafest, a bi-annual event hosted by the club, will take place in the Lower Hunter on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September. It is primarily a car show to help raise money for local charities within the region. This year, the major benefactors are Dog Rescue Newcastle and the Ronald McDonald House. On the Saturday, a convoy of more than 200 Toranas will depart at 11am and head through Morpeth, Hinton and Wallalong before stopping at Tocal College for a two-hour lunch. Racing identities will then discuss that famous race from 1979 in front of hundreds of Torana enthusiasts at the Toranafest Gala Dinner. The Toranafest Show n’ Shine shifts into gear

from 9am on the Sunday in the sporting fields at the back of Maitland Park. Hunter Valley Torana Club president Pete Morris said it would be the biggest show on record. “It is quite a remarkable achievement when you consider [the Torana] is one model and we’ll have, to date, 445 cars coming,” he said. “The total conservative value of cars on display would be around $30 million to $35 million and we’re expecting thousands of spectators to attend the day.” Special guests at this year’s event will include Jim Richards, now a Supercars Hall of Fame inductee following seven Bathurst wins and four Australian Touring Car Championships, as well as Bev Brock, wife to the late Peter Brock and an integral part of Holden through the years. Joe Felice, the former manager of Holden Motorsport during the sixties and seventies, and John Sheppard, Holden Dealer Team’s manager in 1979, are also expected to be among the crowd. Mr Morris said one guest was flying all the way from Germany.

“This particular gentleman came to Australia some years ago for a bit of a holiday with some friends, saw a Torana, loved them, and decided to buy one,” he said. news School puts mind over matter A 24-hour challenge has showcased what a local school’s students and staff can do when they put their minds to it. Glendale Technology High School hosted the Chase Your Dreams 24-Hour Challenge fundraising charity event last week, in which participants were encouraged to continually run, cycle and row for its duration. Year 12 coordinator and coorganiser Gavin Wilson said a former staff member was the inspiration behind the idea. “It was based on a teacher who passed away about eight years ago now – he wrote on a child’s shirt ‘Chase Your Dreams’, so we’ve held that motto for years and decided it was time to do a new challenge,” he said. A section of the event was dedicated to the community.

It included a range of activities and a barbecue to help raise funds for two local charities – the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) and Sione’s Academy. The MHF is a charity formed in Newcastle by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following Mark’s diagnosis with brain cancer in 2013. Its mission is to raise muchneeded funds for research, to create awareness, and support brain cancer patients and their families. Sione’s Academy, launched in 2018 by former rugby league first grader Sione Finefeuiaki, has provided the youth of Tonga with opportunities they didn’t have previously. Each year, a group of volunteers travel from Newcastle to Tonga to deliver sports, education, health, wellbeing, and construction programs.

Ward Boundary Plan Amendments As required under the Local Government Act 1993 (the Act), the City of Newcastle (CN) has reviewed its ward boundaries. The review has found that the difference between the number of electors in each Ward is greater than 10%. Under the Act, CN must amend those Ward Boundaries so that the difference in the number of electors between the Wards is less than 10%. Residents and businesses within the City of Newcastle Local Government Area (LGA) are encouraged to review the proposed Ward Boundary Plan amendments and Discussion Paper and provide feedback on the option presented. Have your say during the public exhibition period from 29 August to 10 October 2019. Go to newcastle.nsw.gov.au to review the proposed amendments and provide your comments.

This October, the academy will rebuild a disability centre; conduct sporting clinics in cricket, netball and swimming; and deliver a Drug and Alcohol Mentoring Program. Mr Wilson said that the Chase Your Dreams 24-Hour Challenge’s success had given the school a desire to organise similar activities in the future. “We’re wanting to do a little bit more, especially for Sione’s Academy,” he said.

“The [wet] weather hindered us a little bit, but it was really inspiring. “The kids got involved during the day and then about 40 to 50 Year 12 students kept going overnight on the bike. “It was amazing to see what they can do when they put their minds to it – they had already embraced the idea from start.” Visit markhughesfoundation.com. au or sionesacademy.com for more. - Ben Murphy

news Charity’s walk for suicide prevention

Lifeline Hunter Central Coast chief executive Rob Sams near Bar Beach ahead of the Walk With Us event.

A walk along Newcastle’s picturesque coastline wants to help bring suicide out of the shadows. Lifeline has encouraged people from across the Hunter Region to join its Walk With Us event on Tuesday 10 September – World Suicide Prevention Day. The walk, now into its fifth year, honours the memories of those lost, while it also aims to remove the stigma surrounding suicide. Lifeline Hunter Central Coast chief executive Rob Sams said the event was an opportunity for the community to show it cared. “This event is an opportunity for Lifeline to walk together with the community and shine light on the importance of human connection for people when supporting each other,” he said. “I hope this event reaches those who are currently struggling and highlights that we, as a community, do care and want to help.” In 2017, the last reporting period, more than 3,000 Australians lost their lives to suicide while, each year, around 80,000 attempt suicide. The Walk With Us participants will start at Dixon Park Surf Club at 6am and head to

Merewether, before making a return. A Welcome to Country will be led by Uncle Bill and special guests are set to include Australian Institute of Sport representatives Declan Stacey and Gordon Allan, as well as the Newcastle Jets squad. Lifeline hopes to exceed previous attendance numbers at the event, which has attracted more than 700 people. It is free to register and everyone is welcome. If businesses would like to show their support and walk as a team, they can also register to do so. Any money raised through donations will go toward Lifeline’s local suicide prevention services. The charity is grateful to Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group, Newcastle Flower Markets, and Dixon Park Surf Club for helping to make the event possible. Visit lifelinehunter.org.au to register for the event. For 24/7 crisis or suicide prevention support, head to lifeline.org.au/crisischat or call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

sport Bears win Goodall Cup ‘Anything can happen in the finals’ is a popular saying when it comes to the Australian Ice Hockey League playoffs. It certainly rang true at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday night. The two favourites to win their semi-finals, Newcastle Northstars and CBR Brave, were defeated as the Sydney Bears and Perth Thunder reached Sunday’s AIHL grand final. “The quality of the league is such this year that where you finish on the ladder doesn’t reflect how well you will do in the finals,” Northstars’ general manager, Garry Doré, said. “The way the finals are set structured, the team that shows up on the day can win it.” Following a record-breaking season, defending champions and

league leaders CBR Brave were outgunned in the final period, with the Bears going on to win 6-4. In the second semi-final, the Northstars took an early lead, only for Perth to stun the home crowd with three unanswered goals. Newcastle’s Richie Tesarik set up a nervy finish with his second strike of the game, however, the clock ran out before Newcastle could put the puck in the net. On Sunday, Perth stormed to a 2-0 lead, but the Bears levelled it up at 2-all at the end of the first period. Another three unanswered goals then saw the Sydney outfit claim the coveted Goodall Cup for the third time. The AIHL finals were held in the Hunter Region for the first time since 2012.

Newcastle’s Bradman Best, right, celebrates his try with teammate Hymel Hunt during Saturday’s clash with the Gold Coast Titans. Photo: Getty Images

New era begins with win The post-Nathan Brown era began with a bang as Newcastle stormed to a 38-4 win over the Gold Coast Titans at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.

Interim coach Kristian Woolf stepped into the role prior to the round 24 clash after Brown called time on his four-year stint at the club. Heavy rain and a disillusioned

fanbase contributed to a crowd of just 8,274 – Newcastle’s lowest since 1997 – on Old Boys’ Day. The Knights went behind early when Gold Coast halfback Ryley Jacks crashed through several would-be tackles to score. However, the home side was swift to respond, with skipper Mitchell Pearce receiving a pass from prop David Klemmer and diving across the line in the 12th minute. Three more tries before the break, courtesy of Mitch Barnett, Hymel Hunt and Connor Watson, saw the Knights lead 24-4. Newcastle extended its advantage in the 45th minute when Bradman Best, in just his second NRL game, raced onto a Kalyn Ponga pass to score his first try. Further tries to Sione Mata’utia and Lachlan Fitzgibbon sealed the comfortable victory. The Knights will tackle Penrith away this Sunday 8 September from 4pm.

Grand finale A grand final showdown between the Harbour Hellcats and Fort Smashleys will wrap up the Newcastle Roller Derby League season this weekend. The Hellcats are eager to snap Smashleys’ three-year winning streak when the two sides clash at Newcastle Showground Exhibition Centre on Saturday 7 September. League spokesperson and Hellcats skater, Zoe Hennessey, expected it to be a close contest. “Our cohesion and ability to execute strategies as a team has been off the charts this year,” she said. “They are an incredibly tough team to beat, but so are we.” The two teams have previously met twice this year, taking away one win each. Tickets for the grand final can be purchased via newcastlerollerderby.org.au or at the door on the day. Doors open at 6pm.

Nuts about fruit & veg It’s Fruit & Veg Month! The NSW primary schools initiative puts a positive focus on fruit and vegetables. Littlies will love these nutritious recipes, courtesy of Mayver’s [mayvers.com.au]

Tahini one pot pasta by Emerson McMaster Time: 25 mins Dairy free / sugar free / vegan

½ red onion, chopped 1 tsp miso paste

200g pasta

1 tsp coconut sugar

1 cup cherry tomatoes

1 tsp tamari

½ cup passata

1-2 cups water

10 basil leaves

2 Tbsp almond feta, for topping

5 sundried tomatoes

Place all ingredients in a pot and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly to ensure pasta doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Cook until the pasta has absorbed all the liquid. If more water is required, add more until cooked.

5 olives 1 Tbsp fired oregano 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast 2 Tbsp Mayver’s Tahini

Chocolate and cherry ice cream slice by Whole Remedy Time: 1 hour Serves 12 Dairy free / vegan For the tahini base 2 cups raw almonds 2 cups shredded coconut 4 Tbsp pure maple syrup ¼ cup Mayver’s Tahini ¼ cup runny coconut oil For the cherry ice cream centre 500g organic frozen cherries, pitted 500g organic frozen strawberries ¼ cup chia seeds ¼ cup shredded coconut For the crunchy choc top 1 jar Mayver’s Almond, Coconut and Cacao Spread ¼ cup runny coconut oil ¾ cup raw almonds ¾ cup activated buckwheat ¼ cup pure maple syrup 28

Line a large, square baking tin with baking paper and coconut oil. Using a high-speed food processor, blend all the ingredients for the tahini base until crumbly. Squash and flatten into the tin. Use a spatula or pastry scraper to flatten it out nicely. Place in the freezer to harden. Clean your food processor. Blend all ingredients for the cherry ice cream centre until smooth. Layer on top of the base and place again in the freezer to harden. Clean your food processor and blend all the ingredients for the crunchy chocolate top, including Mayver’s Almond, Coconut and Cacao Spread, and layer on top and flatten out well. Place into the freezer to harden for at least an hour or overnight. Remove and carefully turn out onto a chopping board. Use a hot knife to slice into portions. Keeps well in the fridge or freezer.

Blast from the past

Hunter historian Ed Tonks with his latest releases. Photo: Peter Stoop

Slide evenings may be a relic of the past, but Hunter historian Ed Tonks remembers them fondly. “Sometimes they’d be upside down or whatever, but I really enjoyed them because it was a chance to discuss different topics with your mates,” he says. “The result was a crossfertilisation of ideas.” Tonks sifted through more than 100 scans and dusted off as many slides to collate his latest book, Tracking Back 2. The book, a sequel to 2017 title Tracking Back, features rail scenes of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in the early 1990s.

time out It records the last days of the Toronto and Belmont railway lines and gives insight into the rail operations at Newstan Colliery and the coal preparation plant at Teralba. Tracking Back has been so well received that Tonks says he might consider expediting the third book in the series to next year. But, for now, fans can also get their hands on a 2020 calendar, titled Hotels of Old Newcastle, featuring photographs taken by Ralph Snowball. Tracking Back 2 is available from local newsagents and book shops. - Georgia Osland

Little Chick brand supports not-for-profit Little Chick Dreams of Change (LC) is an activist jewellery brand designed and made by Barbara Nanshe, to empower personal space. The brand, which features a pendant set made of recycled sterling silver, is a vegan product that uses recycled packaging. “Wearing Little Chick prompts us to follow our dreams, speak out and act for what we believe in,” Nanshe says. “If you empower the person, you empower the community. Empower the person, change the world.” For the past seven years, Little Chick has donated $10 from every sale to The Native Animal Trust Fund to support its wildlife rescue work in the Hunter.

The charity will be presented with another cheque at an upcoming event at Barbara Nanshe Studio. This year marks a change of beneficiary to Trees in Newcastle, (TIN), which turns 30 this month. Donations will support their work propagating local native plants, supporting biodiversity and the local environment. TIN now resides at Belmont State Wetland Park. The Little Chick Dreams of Change event will have several features. Capture your wild and random thoughts Take a scribble journal and write down everything that is on your mind. This is a process of emptying the contents of your mind. Write down everything that comes to mind in response to each of the prompts below. However, write it down fast and then move onto the next item – don’t spend too long on any item. For this exercise, you only have to list your thoughts but not look into them in any detail. Jot down: • The things you are thinking about; • How you are feeling; • How you feel about your health and wellbeing;

Silver bullet

• How you feel towards your family members; • How you feel about your work;

Bullet journaling is a popular way to organise your thoughts. A bullet journal can be whatever you need it to be; a daily planner, to-do list, sketchbook, dream diary and much more. This is an edited extract from The Journal Writer’s Companion by Alyss Thomas, RRP $34.99, published by Exisle Publishing. Available at exislepublishing.com and wherever good books are sold.

• Anything you feel dread about; • The things you are hoping will happen; • The things you are looking forward to;

NW2049

Big or small, our range of sheds are almost limitless.

• Anything you are worried about;

• The things you have been doing today and what you are doing tomorrow; • The things you ought to do but may not get ‘round to yet; • The things you definitely have to do; • The things you need to remember that you might forget; • Some enjoyable things you would really like to do if you had the time; • Some nice or positive things you would like to remember to do or think about when you get ‘round to it or when you have the time. Now go over all of this in different colours and cross out anything that is not that important, and you can forget about. Then highlight anything that has come to light that you want to retain. Circle anything that is important that you should attend to, whether immediately or longer term. You might want to migrate these items to a different journal, when you have decided what type of journal/s you are going to keep.

The Downsizing Decision If you’re thinking about downsizing and unsure of what the best option is, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Australia is experiencing a tidal wave of over 55s planning the next steps in their future and looking at what the best downsizing decision is to suit their preferences. With a variety of options to choose from, it’s important for downsizers to understand and compare all the housing alternatives and consider what’s best. Options range from ageingin-place or moving in with family through to private rent-

al, apartment living, purchasing an existing property or building a new house and land package, lifestyle communities or the traditional retirement village/aged care model. All come with pros and cons for each individual, however, the increasingly popular option gaining a strong foothold in the over 55s lifestyle living space is the land lease ownership model. Ingenia Chief Operating Officer, Nikki Fisher, said land lease living introduces a whole new housing concept to over 55s that’s suitable for all types of downsizers, whether they’re

still working or already enjoying their golden years. “Ingenia Lifestyle clients purchase a brand new home, the majority of times up to half of the median average house price in the region, and lease the land without having to pay stamp duty on the transaction. “Additionally, adding to the simplicity and transparency of the land lease model, if or when it comes time to leave, there are no exit/DMF fees, no sharing of capital gains and no refurbishment fees that you’d normally find in a retirement village,” Nikki said. The success of the mod-

el has positioned Ingenia Lifestyle as Australia’s leading developer in land lease communities while creating a more sustainable future for those considering their retirement options. “We’re thrilled to be evolving the land lease model into lifestyle resorts with multi-million dollar clubhouses set within master planned streetscapes and sub-tropical gardens along with architect-designed homes, stunning facades and well-thought out interiors. “Ingenia Lifestyle understands our clients have spent

a lifetime working hard, raising a family and paying off the mortgage and now they’re putting themselves first and starting to do more of what they love,” Nikki said. The popularity of Latitude One has seen the first six stage releases sold out, with release 7 now selling quickly. You’re invited to the Spring Open Day on Saturday 21st September to experience the gold class lifestyle at Latitude One. celebrity birthday EVAN RACHEL WOOD 7 September 1987 The emotional and receptive Moon is in control of Evan Rachel’s relationships, family and domestic life during the year ahead. Self-development will be high on her agenda. She will have to try hard to stay on an even keel emotionally; otherwise, if she makes plans and decisions impulsively, based purely on her moods at the time, she won’t get the satisfaction she desires. Remember, whether your luck is good or bad is often determined by your state of mind when making decisions.

in the stars ARIES: 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER: 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA: 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN: 22 DEC – 20 JAN

You will fall into a sensible routine at work in September and may find yourself following a strict set of directions. This is the time to establish good work habits and you will find reliable and efficient colleagues to work alongside at this time.

This is going to be a very busy and potentially restless month, as you will be moving around the neighbourhood more than often, as short distances become a feature. Technology will certainly be of interest. If you have exams up ahead you will do amazingly well with them.

This will be a time of reflection.

There will be an expansion of your personal life; you may travel overseas or take the time to explore a part of the world you’ve always fancied knowing better. Your work could take you away and you might enter into a business venture which involves overseas goods, services or property.

TAURUS: 21 APR – 21 MAY You will be dealing with children and those from younger generations. Whoever you are, you will enjoy a more youthful attitude, possibly joining in sporting activities and youthful pastimes. Your feelings will rise to the surface and could be hard to hide or difficult to control.

GEMINI: 22 MAY – 21 JUNE You are likely to be hypersensitive this month as issues involving your home and family may be rather challenging. You will take on more responsibility for relatives and loved ones and this could be a source of great comfort or irritation to you depending, of course, on the prevailing circumstances.

LEO: 23 JULY – 23 AUG Financial matters become a top priority and your attention is on your personal income and financial base. This is a good time to renovate, declutter or invest in property. If you want to move, it’s an ideal time to purchase a new home, especially if it has a garden.

VIRGO: 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Happy Birthday Virgo! With Mars in your own sign you will find that your emotions seem to take on a life of their own, you will feel more passionate in every way and even the most placid among you will become excited and enthusiastic about everyone and everything.

Events may seem to be in the hands of fate and there doesn’t seem to be much you can do about it. You may feel like you have to suppress your own personality and keep a good many of your feelings under wraps.

SCORPIO: 24 OCT – 22 NOV This is a time when friends are going to become increasingly important to you; you’ll have to rely upon them and will, in turn, be a good friend to others. There will be an involvement with clubs, groups and team projects; you’ll definitely feel a desire to join a group.

SAGITTARIUS: 23 NOV – 21 DEC This is a time of hard work but also of ultimate achievement. You’ll receive a great deal of useful help from others at work, some of whom may be in positions of seniority or they may be equipped with some kind of specialised knowledge they’re willing to share with you.

AQUARIUS: 21 JAN – 19 FEB You will either make a fresh commitment to your present job or make a change for one which will stand you in good stead in the future. Whichever way this transition works, it will mean a transformation, rebirth or a redefinition of your goals both within and outside the home.

PISCES: 20 FEB – 20 MAR Whether you’re at the dating stage or contemplating the end of your present partnerships, new relationships will have an air of freshness about them. It appears you’re going to be drawn into the world of business and if you don’t have any business knowledge, will have to acquire it quickly.

My favourite things SOCiAliSinG Always up for a catch-up with a beer and a laugh with mates and really enjoy the opportunities when they arise.

MOViES i love movies and have done since i can remember. My tastes are wide and my top five always changes. Currently, it’s The Godfather, A Few Good Men, Heat, Star Wars and All The President’s Men.

Dave Belcher

lAKE MACQUARiE City COUnCil DEPUty MAyOR

Dave Belcher is the executive officer of the Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH). Based in King Street, Newcastle, CDAH is a peer-led organisation for people with disabilities and their families. CDAH’s goal is to use its collective voice to create a world where people with disabilities are included and active citizens within their communities, allowing for greater voice, choice, and control for people with disabilities. Dave’s passion for disability advocacy and community liaison stems from his personal experience of living with lumbosacral agenesis – a condition characterised by the absence of different segments of lumbar spine along with total or partial absence of the sacrum – and being a wheelchair user. Dave has also been deputy mayor of Lake Macquarie City Council since his election in 2016. He focuses on building universally accessible infrastructure and ensuring that Lake Macquarie is a friendly, vibrant, and disability-confident city. 62

RUGBy lEAGUE PEERS’ SUCCESS One of the best things about being in CDAH is seeing people with disabilities work towards their potential and living the lives they wish in the ways they choose. What success looks like varies (it could be getting a job, living independently or getting control of your supports) but it’s always great to witness.

i’m a newcastle Knights tragic and will follow them through thick and thin. Andrew Johns is still the best player i’ve ever seen.

HiStORy i’ve always been interested in history and the role it plays in our lives and its impact on the world around us. it’s what led me to study History at the University of new England (UnE).
