CAVES BEACH SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB

Caves Beach SLSC is a family-focused club, which formed in 1929. We are right to be enormously proud of our nippers program that has helped create the next generation of healthy, productive citizens for over 50 years. It is a fact that Little Nippers was originally founded in Australia by our Hunter Branch in the 1964 – 65 season. Two years later, this led to the formation of Juvenile Surf Lifesaving Australia with one of our members, Ron Ekert, being elected as the National President to steer the future of the program that is now available in 314 Clubs nationally. Caves Beach SLSC also has a notable history of competitive success at state, national and world championship level, particularly in the surfboat and IRB disciplines. The famous caves that give the beach its name not only attract locals from all over the Hunter Valley, but increasingly a large number of day trippers and short stay visitors from the Greater Sydney Region.

HUNTER BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION

GOT YOUR BACK SISTA

STARLIGHT CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION

The spirit of the Got Your Back Sista charity and The Sista Code online community is to uplift, inspire and support other women, including our most vulnerable sistas – those who have escaped a violent relationship and must start their lives again. Whilst there are more stories in the media, and a growing awareness and concern of the rate of domestic violence in Australia, the conversation and advocacy for change in our community remains a low murmur, an uncomfortable topic to broach and a seemingly impossible epidemic to stem or stamp out. The Got Your Back Sista charity is fielding calls for help daily, with requests to assist women moving out of refuges and crisis accommodation as well as friends and family of victims asking where they can go to get help and advice for their loved ones. Currently based in NSW, we work directly with domestic violence services and refuges, by referral only, to provide: 1. Assistance with sourcing and providing household items, household and personal starter-packs, clothing and furniture for women that are moving from a refuge to independent living; 2. A ‘Be A Sista’ mentoring program to provide friendship and support to women who are starting over after escaping domestic violence; and much, much more.

THE MARK HUGHES FOUNDATION

Starlight’s mission is to brighten the lives of seriously ill children, teenagers and their families. Established in 1988, Starlight works closely with health professionals to develop programs that have a positive impact on seriously ill children, adolescents and their families. From one Starlight Wish granted 30 years ago, Starlight is now recognised as an integral part of the Australian healthcare system. We are Australia’s broadest-reaching children’s charity, helping kids of all ages with any illness, injury or disability right across the country (Australian Charity Reputation Index 2018). Starlight’s hospital and community programs, including the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, embrace the principles of ‘positive psychology’, where fun plays an important role in improving overall wellbeing. We provide positive distractions from fear and pain and help sick kids create positive emotions, build resilience and develop self-esteem. Through the power of fun and play, Starlight helps break the relentless cycle of pain and trauma for seriously ill children and their families.

When Jason Comerford was 18 years old, he was playing for his beloved Kotara Bears when a mistimed tackle saw him suffer a brain injury. After months in intensive care Jason moved home, however, the transition was not an easy one for the Comerford family. Years later, towards the end of 2017, Pam was mortified to find the wall beside Jason’s bed was damp from the shower in his bathroom. She further discovered that the insurance company wouldn’t cover the cost of the damage. After numerous phone calls to Jason’s friends and other members of the rugby league community, the rugby league community and the Men of League Foundation acted swiftly to financially and emotionally support the Comerfords during this difficult time.

This week... From the editor We're on the home stretch to spring, but I've got to say, I've kind of enjoyed winter this year. I've appreciated the little things; steam rising from a fresh cuppa, cosy movie nights in and sunshine through an open sunroof. It's a well-known fact I prefer spring or autumn, avoiding extremities altogether, but I've surprised myself this season. That said, we've still a little way to go before the warmer weather truly sets in. If you haven't already, I highly recommend a trip to Wickham's Inner City Winemakers to warm you to your core. Rob and Janine's good old-fashioned hospitality creates an experience like no other, which you can read more about in Taste (p34). But don't just take my word for it – we're giving away a wine and cheese tasting for two, so one lucky Newcastle Weekly reader and a guest can experience it for themselves. Speaking of taste, health stories appear to be the flavour of the week, with the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct master plan unveiling, ATUNE Health Centres' redevelopment of Cardiff Squash Centre, and our gorgeous cover story about 11-month-old Alder Ashton making headlines. Enjoy the last week of winter! - Georgia Osland

One Voice Mob’s talented young members at Lambton Park. Photo: Peter Stoop

One voice prompts cultural experience A talented choir from Windale hopes to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, to perform at the spot where Nelson Mandela first stood upon being released from prison. One Voice Mob’s youngest members, aged six to 16, have been offered the chance via a cultural exchange program with a multi award-winning

6

vocal trio called The Soil, who grew up in the impoverished town of Soweto. The children will take part in an intensive, weeklong singing masterclass with the Johannesburg group prior to a performance at the famous Regina Mundi Church. It was here that Mandela met his community

after 27 years behind bars for his role as an antiapartheid activist. However, the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will only go ahead if $100,000 is raised to cover travel costs before the choir departs in late November. Centre for Hope is the charity behind One Voice Mob. Founder and chief executive Geraldine Moran said South Africa stood out as a destination because of its ancient ties to Australia. “Most kids of this age would most likely never have the opportunity to travel and learn from different cultural experiences – that’s why this exchange is so important,” she said. “It will show them that Windale is not that bad. “Where we will take them to – and where The Soil, who are doing the masterclass, came from in the slums of Soweto – are little shantytowns. “They’d be garden shed-sized, made from aluminium tin, and there are thousands of them on hillsides. “[Occupants] steal power to put in and keep their families warm. “So, part of the cultural exchange is realising just how fortunate we are, even in suburbs that we might view as not as palatial as others.” Continued on page 12

news Government’s master plan for hospital

Plans for a $780 million investment in John Hunter Hospital have been unveiled this week in a bid to meet “growing demand” across the region. The state government’s master plan, labelled the John Hunter

Health and Innovation Precinct, will include new and expanded emergency services; critical care services; increased interventional and imaging services; expanded inpatient units; and enhanced ambulatory care services.

Hunter New England Local Health District chief executive, Michael DiRienzo, said the health precinct’s development would significantly expand the John Hunter Hospital and John Hunter Children’s Hospital. “The precinct will also create new opportunities for education, training and employment for staff and the broader community,” Mr DiRienzo said. The master plan was developed following a workshop last year. Hosted by Minister for Health and Medical Research, Brad Hazzard, the workshop included input from more than 60 health, education, research, business and political leaders. Mr Hazzard believed that the precinct would ensure the people of the Hunter “get the very best health care possible for decades to come”.

Club welcomes upgrade Surf life savers and club members of all ages and abilities have welcomed a $640,000 upgrade of the Dixon Park Surf Life Saving Club. The refurbishment, which was officially opened on Sunday, featured new change rooms and accessible amenities. “[It] has made a huge difference to the quality of the club facilities, which are used by hundreds of members, including our nippers, juniors and senior lifesavers, as well as lifeguards and visitors,” Dixon Park SLSC president Paul Murray said. The upgraded facilities also include a new kitchenette, meeting room and small function space on the ground floor of Dixon Park SLSC pavilion.

news Centre attune to community health needs

An artist’s impression of ATUNE Health Centres’ Cardiff South development.

Simon Ashley and his family turn the first sod with Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser (far left) and local MPs Jodie Harrison, Greg Piper and Pat Conroy.

Cardiff Squash Centre will become the site of the first integrated health precinct in the country. ATUNE Health Centres’ latest development will house more than 100 staff, including health and medical professionals, under one

roof upon completion late next year. Unlike many medical and health centres, each person working on-site will be directly employed by ATUNE and will work collaboratively to provide multi-disciplinary treatment across areas such as psychology,

physiotherapy, speech pathology, dietetics and podiatry. Chief executive officer Simon Ashley told Newcastle Weekly this meant a patient could present to a GP and receive all the treatment they needed in one place. “That really changes the way we treat people,” he said. “This holistic approach is the way of healthcare in the future.” Mr Ashley bought the Ada Street

site in Cardiff South nine years ago, and has been planning the development since. He currently operates three other centres – one in Belmont and two in Warners Bay – but will consolidate the latter two when the Cardiff South hub opens in September 2020. With a nod to the centre’s heritage as the only private squash court left standing in the Hunter, Mr Ashley not only plans to retain the courts, but spend about $220,000 on upgrading them. They will become an integral component alongside two Pilates and yoga studios, a hydro pool and rehabilitation gym as well as an organic food café and health food store. In total, there will be 30 consultation rooms, including seven medical suites and a pathology lab. - Georgia Osland

Have you heard about Specsavers Audiology Charlestown & Mt Hutton? Specsavers Charlestown and Specsavers Mt Hutton have launched a new audiology service to customers, revolutionising the industry for locals by offering hearing aids and care at clear, low prices. But while affordable services and products are important, Specsavers Audiology Charlestown and Mt Hutton’s new owner and audiology partner Emma Beedel says professionalism and customer care is the key to success. ‘The capability of technology today and the opportunity to improve people’s lives has made audiology a rewarding career choice. One I haven’t regretted’, says Emma. ‘In theory we all know that hearing loss can affect people’s lives, but it is often not until someone we know experiences it, even temporarily, that we come to know the true extent of hearing loss on a person and their family’. Joining Specsavers Mt Hutton and Charlestown, Emma is most looking forward to owning her own audiology clinic that aligns with Specsavers’ values. Specsavers offers professional eye care and eye wear and is now extending its values to hearing, offering the best technology hearing aids at affordable price points. One in six Australians experience hearing loss, yet only one in three does anything about it. On top of this, Specsavers research has shown that over half of Australians (57%),

18 years and over, have experienced moments where they felt concerned about their hearing. Specsavers’ Executive Director of its audiology business, Darrel Magna says the audiology offering is giving Australians exceptional value in hearing aids and care as well as the expert service that the Specsavers brand has become wellknown for. ‘By offering audiology, we’re providing truly accessible health care for our customers’ ears as well as their eyes. The earlier we detect and treat hearing loss, the less of an impact the problem will have on a person’s hearing long term’ says Darrel. If you feel like your hearing isn’t as good as it should be, Specsavers Audiology are now taking bookings for free* 15 minute hearing checks. If further testing is required, comprehensive hearing assessments with Emma are being offered for $49. If you require hearing assistance as a result, the stores have a range of hearing aids designed and built by leading manufacturers, which feature cutting-edge innovations in hearing assistance. A pair of hearing aids starts from $1495. Gas terminal plans at port A new $589 million gas import terminal at Kooragang Island could supply up to 80% of the state’s gas needs, a proposal has outlined. The Newcastle GasDock project has been declared Critical State Significant Infrastructure (CSSI) by the state government. Acting premier John Barilaro made the announcement alongside NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Rob Stokes, last week. Despite being declared ‘critical’, the terminal will still be subject to detailed community consultation, as well as a full and thorough environmental assessment. “[It] could be operational by 2022-23 and provide supply for gas-fired power stations, helping to manage energy security during the period in which the Liddell power station is scheduled to close,” Mr

Barilaro said. The project involves the use of a vessel designed to safely store the liquefied product and then convert it into a useable gas for industrial, commercial, and residential customers in NSW. It will connect to a new jetty, planned to be built on Port of Newcastle land at Kooragang Island, enabling a connection to the existing East Coast natural gas network. The company behind the import terminal, Energy Projects & Infrastructure Korea (EPIK), stated its primary goal was to deliver the most competitive infrastructure solution for natural gas imports into NSW. An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will now need to be prepared and put on public exhibition for community feedback.

news Helping kids shine bright Fun fights fear and wins every time. This is the belief of the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which, when a once-bright life becomes dulled by needles, hospital visits and painful treatments, helps sick kids to forget their illness and rediscover the joys of childhood. Since 1988, the foundation has partnered with Australian medical professionals to develop programs based on positive psychology principles that support the total care of children and teens. One of the beneficiaries of the program, little Alder Ashton, is based at John Hunter Children’s Hospital. After being born with a defect, Alder underwent surgery and had a large portion of his small intestines removed, which left him with short bowel syndrome. The now 11-month-old has spent

news Hats off to netball star A $2,000 scholarship has done more for Charlestown netballer Krystal Dallinger than help pay for sporting fees. It’s opened doors she never thought possible. The Year 12 Hunter Sports High student and Hunter Academy of Sport graduate this season started playing for Central Coast Heart. She has also made her mark through the school’s Talented Sports Program, competing in NSW Combined High Schools competitions. Earlier this year, Dallinger raised $2,000 for the Confident Girls Foundation, which aims to provide opportunities for vulnerable Australian girls to thrive through netball, by getting sponsors to donate a dollar for every goal she scored throughout June – paying forward the scholarship she received

from Compass Housing’s Grow A Star program, funded by Beyond Bank. But perhaps the icing on the cake came not long after Dallinger and her mum, Carolyn, relocated to the Hunter from Dubbo for Dallinger to pursue her netball dreams. After participating in GWS Giants defender Sam Poolman’s Aspire Netball program, Dallinger gifted Poolman a hat she had painted with an Indigenous design as a thank-you. As a proud Indigenous woman from the Gamilaroi Nation, art is equally as big a part of Dallinger’s life as netball. Poolman was floored by the gesture and invited Dallinger to design the team’s dress for the Indigenous round against the Sydney Swifts, not only last year but this year, too. “That’s still probably the craziest

Krystal Dallinger with the dresses she designed for the GWS Giants netball team. Photo: Peter Stoop

moment, for me,” Dallinger told Newcastle Weekly. “To think this all started with a hat.” Compass Housing has continued to support Dallinger through the Grow A Star program, which offers financial help and mentoring to local disadvantaged youth to realise their academic, artistic or sporting dreams. Grow A Star coordinator Shane Marshall said, in households where money was tight, kids often missed

out on the sort of extracurricular activities that most would simply take for granted. “Many talented kids in community housing miss out on realising their potential or dreams because their parents simply can’t afford to fund activities that play an important role in connecting young people to their communities,” he said. Applications are now open. To find out more, visit compasshousing. org/community-programs/grow-star - Georgia Osland

Shape city’s future look

Inspirational Australians share stories with students Maitland students’ passion and positivity were highlights of Kurt Fearnley’s trip to the Lower Hunter. The Newcastle-based disability advocate and former Paralympian, who was crowned NSW Australian of the Year last November, shared his inspiring story last week as part of a state lap of honour. He was joined by three other winners – NSW Senior Australian of the Year Heather Lee; NSW Young Australian of the Year Jarrod Wheatley; and NSW Local Hero Sophie Smith. The group addressed students in a series of short speeches, as well as a Q&A session. “I, and the three other NSW Australians of the Year, went to Bolwarra Public School, where we were able to meet some young kids

from the Maitland area,” Fearnley said. “We then came to speak at Maitland High School. “Maitland is a rural area and, after experiencing years of drought, I’m just so impressed by the passion of the kids and the excitement, the positivity and the optimism.” Some of Fearnley’s greatest achievements include being a three-time Paralympic and twotime Commonwealth Games gold medallist; crewing on the winning yacht during the Sydney to Hobart in 2011; and crawling the entire 96-kilometre length of the Kokoda Track to raise awareness of men’s health. As for the other winners, Ms Lee is a 92-year-old world champion race walker, while Mr Wheatley is

a social entrepreneur who founded a not-for-profit organisation that pioneers a new model of out-of-home care for foster children with high needs. After losing their prematurely born triplets in 2007, Mrs Smith and her husband Ash formed a team, Running for Premature Babies, to fundraise for life-saving neonatal equipment. The NSW Australians of the Year winners take part in the national awards each January.

What will Newcastle look like in 20 years’ time? It is a question that Newcastle council has put to the community to help shape the future of the local government area, which is projected to grow by about 25% to a population of 202,000 by 2040. The Newcastle Local Strategic Planning Statements (LSPS) is now open for feedback. It aims to set out a 20-year vision for the land use of the local area, as well as shared community values, and how growth and change will be managed in the future. A series of community sessions are scheduled at TAFE NSW Tighes Hill campus, Newcastle Pride Fair, the University of Newcastle, Newcastle library, and the Olive Tree Markets. You can have your say until Wednesday 11 September. Go to newcastle.nsw.gov.au for more.

A dominant second half has kept Newcastle’s hopes of semi-final football alive. The Knights built an 18-6 lead over North Queensland at half-time on Saturday in front of a crowd of 16,752 at McDonald Jones Stadium. Newcastle then piled on 24 unanswered points after the break to remain two points behind the Cronulla Sharks in eighth.

Dynamic duo Kalyn Ponga and Mitchell Pearce wreaked havoc as they combined to score the home side’s first four tries. Ponga opened the scoring with another individual effort, before Pearce raced through a gap and stepped past Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater to dive across the line. The visitors responded when halfback Jake Clifford busted through some soft defence, but another Ponga try gave the Knights a handy buffer. Pearce then grabbed his second 10 minutes into the second period and further tries to Mitch Barnett, Sione Mata’utia and Mason Lino rounded out the emphatic 42-6 win. Newcastle will tackle Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium this Saturday 24 August from 5.30pm.

sport Martial artists’ world titles Two martial artists have returned from the United States with a swag of trophies. Sensei Rachel Mankelow and her student Rachinee Peel-Sasaromya competed in the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) US Open at Florida, which attracted more than 5,000 athletes from 60 countries. The duo, who train at Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre’s headquarters in Warners Bay, won three world titles between them. Rachel took out the 18 years Blackbelt Xtreme and Creative Forms divisions, while she also placed second in Traditional Weapons and fifth in Traditional Forms. Sensei Rachinee won the Xtreme division, came second in Creative Forms, and finished third in Traditional Forms in the 12 to 14

Blackbelt age group. “The US Open is the biggest tournament for the ISKA in the world and it was my first big tournament,” Rachel said. “Some of the people that we competed against do a lot of TV work as stunt doubles. “The competition was large scale – there were 20-odd rings going at once across the three days.” Rachel has been training at least three times a week in Warners Bay for the past decade. The Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre first opened as a full-time facility in 1989 at Glendale. Six years later, the centre moved to a new premise in Hillsborough Road at Warners Bay, where it remains today. There are now more than 1,300 active students across a total of five facilities, with others located

at Redhead, Green Hills, Morisset, and Waratah. The centres offer instruction in Chitokai Karate, Okinawan weaponry, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Fight Fit Kickboxing, and Xtreme martial arts, with programs tailored to suit all ages and skill levels. Rachel believes the sport is becoming increasingly popular throughout the Hunter Region. “There are quite a few local

tournaments now – we went to one several weeks ago in Maitland – and more are popping up every year,” she says. Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre will host its annual Open Day on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September at its five locations from 9am to 3pm. In the eyes of a child, there are not seven wonders of the world; there are seven million! At Imagine, we give our children’s imagination wings by providing opportunities to explore, to discover, to ask questions and to ponder the ‘how,’ ‘why’ and ‘what’. Children learn how to think, not what to think. We also understand that, for children to have the confidence to explore, imagine and create, they need an environment in which they feel safe and secure; an environment where cuddles and soothing words are freely available and where their physical needs are met. Inner City Winemakers director Rob Wilce admires a drop of red.

City cellar’s top drop What’s the difference between a headache-inducing house wine and a drop to remember? Quality, of course. Inner City Winemakers director Rob Wilce doesn’t mess about when it comes to producing fine wine as

close as possible to its natural state. Using grapes harvested from the Hilltops region of Young, as well as the Hunter Valley when the conditions are right, each vintage is hand-pressed and hand-plunged through fermentation and matured

in French Oak to add depth and complexity. Rob takes a minimal intervention approach to his winemaking, which means he uses fewer preservatives such as sulphur. In making his red wines, he doesn’t use any fining agents, such as egg whites or milk products, simply running them through a coarse filter. Rob believes every process you put a wine through can detract from its unique flavour and character. “For everything you add to [wine], you take something away from it,” he says.

Today, they offer intimate wine and cheese tastings and private dinners in the boutique warehouse space, as well as luncheons at Merewether Surf Life Saving Club in collaboration with chef Tony Harrison of Urban Mess; pop-ups at Hunt & Gather’s outdoor night food market, Street Feast; and Mother’s Day events at Stanley Park. You can also join their wine club, Inner City Cru. Drawing on Janine’s artistic

“My philosophy is that a good wine is made in the vineyard and my old-school methods let the fruit speak for itself.” Set in the burgeoning cultural scene of inner-city Newcastle, the Wickham cellar door is renowned for its award-winning wines, including, but not limited to, the 2018 Indenture Shiraz, which is in the running for Winestate’s Wine of the Year. Films promote cultural shift A set of eight short films will start a conversation to help people with disability feel safe and valued. The Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) and National Disability Services (NDS) have teamed up to produce Positive Cultures, which launches today (Thursday 22 August) at Newcastle Museum. “These films encourage us to focus on creating positive organisational cultures that enshrine the rights of people with disability,” CDAH executive officer, David Belcher, said. Positive Cultures is a part of the Zero Tolerance initiative, led by NDS in partnership with the sector. This includes CDAH, which describes itself as an independent, collective voice committed to full inclusion and active citizenhood. Based around a human rights approach, Zero Tolerance outlines actions for service providers to improve prevention, early intervention and responses to abuse, neglect and violence experienced by people with disability. “People with disability should be in control of, and receiving, high quality support,” Mr

Belcher added. “With the royal commission on the horizon, it is important that organisations continue to focus on their culture, not just their policies and procedures. “We support any initiative that helps people with disability feel safe, well, and included.” The Disability Royal Commission was established on 4 April 2019. From September, the National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP) will be extended to provide additional supports for people engaging with the Disability Royal Commission. A free national telephone counselling and referral service for people who are affected by the Disability Royal Commission will also be available in October. Prior to Positive Cultures, several workshops will start at 9.30am. They aim to explore how people with disability are developing new ways of working together with the people and providers they choose to support them. Positive Cultures will then launch at 12.30pm.

This is an alcohol-free event.

A return to golden era of swing Rick Gerber knows the Glenn Miller Orchestra must be doing something right as the band prepares for its fifth extensive tour of Australia. “I like to say, in those five tours, the only places we haven’t played are Darwin and Uluru,” the orchestra’s musical director says with a chuckle. “The tour we’re doing is [almost] 30 shows over seven or eight weeks and they’re all repeats because we’ve had such good audiences.” The Glenn Miller Orchestra will celebrate its 82nd anniversary by bringing back the unforgettable music of the 1940s golden era of swing. The Australian tour, which includes a concert at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle on Sunday 15 September at 2pm, is set to highlight

the ‘Big Band’ hits; the original Glenn Miller arrangements; music of legends such as Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra; and the romantic World War II melodies made famous by Dame Vera Lynn. The Glenn Miller arrangements include timeless icons of American culture like Chattanooga Choo-Choo, In the Mood, Pennsylvania 6-5000, and Moonlight Serenade. For Gerber, his love of Glenn Miller’s music started at an early age. “I remember asking my mother to play Moonlight Serenade and saying, ‘This band sounds different,’” he recalls. “She said: ‘That’s the Glenn Miller sound’ and that sparked my interest in arranging.”

The Glenn Miller Orchestra’s musical director, Rick Gerber, and the band during a previous performance.

It is a passion that has taken Gerber around the globe. In 2013, a career highlight saw the orchestra perform in front of late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was himself an accomplished musician and composer.

Countdown on to Supercars finale The Newcastle 500 has quickly cemented itself as one of the premier events on the Supercars calendar, according to Holden’s Dave Reynolds. The Penrite Racing spearhead is the most successful driver in the event’s short history. In four races at the street circuit, Reynolds has placed fifth, third, second and first to collect the biggest points haul so far. “I love driving the track,” he said. “There’s nowhere you can have a little break down the straights because you’re constantly turning and the walls are super, super close and some of the parts of the track are really high speed and really rough, heaps of bumps. “The car is moving around, dancing all the time. “You have to be on top of your game there. “Besides the track, I actually love the city – they put on a really good show, they support it really well.” Reynolds joined fellow Supercars driver James Golding in Newcastle last week to celebrate the 100-day countdown to this year’s event. The duo boarded the historic William the Fourth in Honeysuckle and enjoyed a visit to Treetops Adventure Park at Minmi. Reynolds is currently sixth in the

Orchid care

A customer earlier this month – one of many brave gardeners out in those gale force winds – asked me what my favourite indoor plant was, and without stopping to think, I said Zanzibar Gem. Now this is partly true, its beauty for busy homeowners being its infrequent need for water; but I have to confess my absolute love is the Cymbidium Orchid. Blooming through winter, they give such lush growth and magnificent sprays of blooms to create a dramatic display. Beware, though: sometimes, after they have fi nished flowering,

they may need a spell outside in a shady spot to enable them to produce blooms for next year. Cymbidiums are native to the Himalayas and require less fuss than other species and can even be planted in the garden in morning sun. They look spectacular under trees or as highlights in a tropical garden. Repotting is generally the subject of concern for fi rst-plant owners. I can simplify this: they won’t need re-potting for at least three years in an average sized pot, and then they can simply be moved to a larger pot, giving the bulbs space to spread. Use a reputable potting medium during September or October, as from this period of time, the plants are growing and any interference during the warmer weather can cause the bulbs to shrink. Fertilising only one or two plants can be simple by applying Searles Flourish for Orchids, following the instructions, dissolved in water. Once a decision is made to divide orchids, they require a little care and knowledge as division will often stop flower production for a couple of seasons. My answer to this is the wonderful knowledge

Newcastle Carpet & Flooring

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

members of the orchid societies have and are very willing to share. During this time of year, they will often have displays in shopping malls and even invite you to take along your plant.

THIS WEEK • Begin taking frangipani cuttings. Leave them aside in a dry place until the sap dries before planting. • Many gardeners have their tomatoes planted; time to use Flourish each week designated for tomatoes and vegetables. • Wait to prune tropical plants until the weather settles.

Moana

pick of the week

Friday, 9GO!, 6.30pm, PG (2016)

This Disney animation is a mythic adventure set in the South Pacific 2000 years ago. The heroine is Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho, pictured), a teenager who sets out on a daring mission to save her people when a crisis hits their island. Along the way she meets smug demigod Maui (a scene-stealing Dwayne Johnson), who learns a thing or two from his teenage protégé.

Friday

The Edge Of Seventeen Friday, 9GO!, 8.30pm, M (2016)

The Pianist Saturday, SBS, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2002)

Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, pictured) and Woody Harrelson (True Detective) star in this coming-of-age comedydrama about an endearing but selfabsorbed teen whose life goes into a tailspin after her best friend starts dating her older brother. Steinfeld is Nadine, whose rage against the world is intensified by the new love between her jock brother Darian (Blake Jenner) and her bestie Krista (Haley Lu Richardson).

Adapted from the memoirs of holocaust survivor Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody, pictured), Roman Polanski’s masterpiece charts Szpilman’s descent from a dandy Warsaw celebrity to a dishevelled shadow of a man. Never reducing the characters to simple shades of black and white, Polanski’s chilling study of humanity is a poignant cinematic achievement.

celebrity birthday ELIZABETH DEBICKI 24 August 1990 Despite the challenges that await Elizabeth during the next 12 months, she will still find it an industrious and productive year if she channels her energies wisely. She will achieve a lot, speeding along trying to finish as much as she can in the shortest time possible. If she uses discipline and directs her energy purposely she will overcome any negative influences. Elizabeth needs to be careful of being tetchy with her friends and loved ones or she risks putting them offside.

There could be troubles with friends and lovers; both could be difficult to deal with because of their attitudes or actual concerns. Try to mend bridges between them to avoid conflicts. You can devote your time to loved ones, both a partner’s and yours, without making one party feeling chosen over another.

Rough emotions may surface pertaining to love. To avoid any fights, don’t poke or prod your loved ones. Respect your friends, lovers and colleagues’ boundaries to avoid confrontations with them. Setting boundaries for both parties is healthy. If an issue arises that is bothersome, bring it up.

You must guard against being

While there’s nothing to worry about long term, in the short term your finances take a downturn. Keep a tight grip on your cash, since impulsive spending could give you plenty of cause for regret later. A disappointing bank statement could reinforce your commitment to tighten the belt.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Taurus your stubborn nature means you may have let some family problems simmer on the backburner for far too long. If this is the case, everything you’ve been ignoring could potentially come to boil over and make a big mess this fortnight. It’s never too late to clear the air.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Be conscious of your speech and actions as someone is likely to take offence, most probably a loved one or someone you truly value. Sometimes your sign has a problem with footin-mouth disease. You would also be best advised to avoid gossip among your friends and loved ones.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG Leo, you’re full of fire on a good day. But sometimes you can end up using your fire to burn everything to the ground. If you don’t want to spend the second half of August sorting through the ashes of former relationships, keep the proverbial fire extinguisher handy.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Keep to the straight and narrow and you can’t go wrong. You need some peace and quiet so rest up and take it easy in the tranquillity of your own space. Allow yourself at least some time this week to just sit there and do not much at all.

manipulated, bullied or controlled into doing something which goes against your better judgment. Avoid slick salesmen like the plague and don’t agree to anything on the phone or on the doorstep just to get the vendor off your back.

you can’t take it back.

Aquarius, you’re always content going your own way and this week is no exception. Whether it’s a job, relationship or living space, if you feel like you’ve stayed at the proverbial party too long, now’s the time to make your exit. While starting over can be scary, you’re skilled at blazing your own trail.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

Scorpio, you might feel inspired to speak your mind this week, but that’s not exactly a good thing, especially if you’re in a relationship that’s hit a rough spot. Your sharp tongue will likely get you into trouble. Remember, once you say something,

You may take delight in expressing your truth to your partner, friends, loved ones and colleagues however don’t expect it to win you friends or to influence people. While you may find it funny, others are going to find it a little too blunt for comfort.

This is an ideal time for you to retreat into yourself and reflect upon your progress. It’s also a wonderful time to repay anything owed to others, such as money, goods or obligations. You may not feel much like talking and may want to be alone more than usual.

My favourite things Photo Dean Treml/Red Bull Content Pool

ADVENTURE Adventure, for me, is something that makes me step outside of my comfort zone. I love to challenge myself and – call me crazy – I really enjoy facing my fears on a regular basis, maybe that’s what draws me to my sport.

FAMILY For most of the competition season I’m on the road travelling from event to event, so when I’m at home I really cherish and make the most of family time. I absolutely love being an aunty to my three energetic nephews and my gorgeous niece.

HOME Photo Ricardo Nascimento/Red Bull

Rhiannan Iffland

Nords Wharf in Lake Macquarie has always been home for me, and I will forever call it home. After a busy year of travel, it’s always so refreshing to return home to the slow pace and beautiful scenery.

RED BULL WORLD SERIES CLIFF DIVER

Rhiannan ‘Rhi’ Iffland began diving at Lambton pool at the age of nine and, before that, she was an avid acrobatic trampolinist. The Lake Macquarie athlete then turned her attention to cliff diving. After a wildcard entry into the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2016, she was quickly hailed as the ‘Australian cliff diving sensation’. With three seasons in the books, Rhiannan has made it a hattrick of titles and become the most decorated female in the sport’s history. Amazingly, she has gone to an even higher level in 2019, dominating the competition to be the runaway leader. After starting with a victory in the Philippines in April, Rhiannan has placed first in every event so far. She sits on 800 points – a whopping 340 ahead of Belarusian Yana Nestsiarava in second – heading into this weekend’s event at Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 2019 world series wraps up in Bilbao, Spain, next month. 66

THE OCEAN Growing up, my Pop used to call me his ‘water baby’. Since I can remember, I have always loved the beach and the ocean. As a young girl it was a place where we spent time with family and friends and now, to this day, being in or by the ocean is therapeutic and simply makes me happy.

Photo Wayne Reiche/Red Bull Content Pool

TRAVEL I’m so lucky that my sport and lifestyle takes me all over the world and, to be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t change this for anything. I love new cultural experiences, meeting new people, seeing new places, and I love trying local foods. Travel really gives me a sense of just how small we are in this big amazing world.
