From the editor OK, so I fangirled a bit meeting this week's cover star - the gracious Jane Goldsmith, whom many of you would know as NBN News' weekend anchor.

When NW caught up with Jane, her husband Neil and their adorable kids James, Lucy and Elizabeth, I got to combine two of my favourite things: networking and supporting one of the Hunter's many worthwhile charities.

Jane will co-emcee the 2019 Raise Love Charity Ball for Ronald McDonald House next month, alongside Hit 106.9 breakfast radio host Nick Gill, who we featured on the cover with wife Georgette and twin babies Otis and Harriet last year.

It's all to support the great and wonderful things Ronald McDonald House Charities do, keeping families close when their sick or injured child is in hospital.

Having used the Ronald McDonald House Family Room at John Hunter Children's Hospital when all three of her children received care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Jane met many families who were grateful to stay at Ronald McDonald House on the hospital grounds - sometimes for weeks or months on end.

This year's ball aims to raise enough money to cover 1,611 nights' accommodation for families in need.

news Knights sign up as mentors He scores and saves tries on the field but, away from the spotlight, Newcastle Knights winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall wants to help kids “break that cycle of destruction”.

The New Zealand international will be a mentor for young people between 15 and 18 years of age who are at risk of getting caught up in the criminal justice system.

Teammates Connor Watson and James Gavet have joined him in a new program to provide guidance and support over a 12-month period in a bid to reduce offending behaviour and promote pro-social attitudes.

The Kick Off will also create a pathway into the youth or casework industry for the mentors through training and development once their sporting careers wind down.

Kenny-Dowall says it is an honour to be a part of the program.

“I take great pride in giving back to the community and trying to make a difference to young people’s lives,” he tells Newcastle Weekly.

“It gives me a great deal of purpose and direction and helps shape me as a person.”

The 31-year-old adds the initiative will focus on identifying personal struggles or issues.

“They all come from different backgrounds, so it will be about working with them on an individual level to develop their needs,” he says.

“We will concentrate on the basic fundamentals of life, as well as health and support networks.

“It’s about helping kids to break that cycle of destruction that lays ahead for them.”

The idea was born during a meeting last year between the nib foundation’s managing director, Mark Fitzgibbon, Broadmeadow

The trio identified a need for greater remedial involvement for youth at risk of reoffending.

“It all started when the local Children’s Court magistrate raised the idea of connecting young repeat offenders with professional sporting players, whose opinions they’re more likely to listen to,” Mr Fitzgibbon

says. “The idea is that this kind of intervention might help these young persons to reach their potential through positive mentorship and, ultimately, keep them out of jail.”

The Kick Off is a joint partnership between the Knights, the nib foundation, NSW Children’s Court, NSW Juvenile Justice, Allambi Youth Services, and the Salvation Army Employment Plus.

news Research reveals rate of plastic ingestion We eat roughly a credit card’s worth of plastic every week.

That is according to a new study by the University of Newcastle, which has found humans, on average, may ingest up to five grams of plastic per week – the equivalent weight of a credit card.

No Plastic in Nature: Assessing Plastic Ingestion from Nature to People calls for governments to step up and play a key role in ensuring the entire chain in the plastic system, from manufacturers to consumers, are held accountable to the common goal of ending plastic pollution.

The research, commissioned by the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature, suggests people are consuming about 2,000 tiny pieces of plastic on a weekly basis; 21 grams a month; or just over 250 grams a year.

The single largest source of plastic ingestion is through water, both bottled and tap, all over the world.

Palanisami, said awareness of the issue and its impact on the environment was increasing. “[However] this study has helped to provide an accurate calculation of ingestion rates for the first time,” he said.

“Developing a method for transforming counts of microplastic particles into masses will help determine the potential toxicological risks for humans moving forward.”

The university is the first to combine data from more than 50 studies on the ingestion of plastic by people.

WWF’s international director general, Marco Lambertini, said the findings were a wake-up call to governments.

“Not only are plastics polluting our oceans and waterways and killing marine life – it’s in all of us and we can’t escape consuming plastics,” he said.

“Global action is urgent and essential to tackling this crisis.”

Mr Lambertini added the only way to solve the worldwide problem was to address the root cause of plastic pollution.

“If we don’t want plastic in our bodies, we need to stop the millions of tons of plastic that continue leaking into nature every year,” he said.

WWF has called for a legally binding treaty on marine plastics pollution, with a global petition already attracting more than 500,000 signatures.

When you’re experiencing homelessness first-hand, often there’s no opportunity for a hot breakfast or a day off work after a rough night’s sleep.

Usually, you’re expected to function at work or at school the next day.

These harsh realities are precisely those the team at Soul Café Newcastle set out to uncover during the annual Sleepout for Soul.

The major fundraiser helps bankroll the cafés programs and services, including serving meals to the homeless and offering basic necessities like haircuts and health checks for those doing it tough.

For the second year, the café’s core team, including founders Rick and Sue Prosser and their sons Luke Prosser, 17, and Luke Conners, 26, slept on the streets for a week leading up to the annual event at Civic West Car Park last Friday night, when more than 200 community members joined in.

Currently in Year 12, Luke Prosser continued to go to school throughout the week, while Luke Conners went to work.

“It’s really eye-opening,”

Conners told Newcastle Weekly.

“I’ve been exhausted [during the day]. I wouldn’t want to be doing this for months on end, especially when compounded by things like poor nutrition without services like Soul Café.

“It’s really opened my heart to what some people go through.”

Conners said last year, when a smaller group of people camped out for the week, he was more concerned about safety and fearing movement in the shadows.

This year, about eight of them took on the challenge, including his girlfriend, which left him feeling a lot safer, but gave him more insight into the exhaustion some people faced when they were homeless but still had daytime commitments.

“I’ve tried not to shy away from decision-making and tasks like that, because otherwise you don’t get the whole picture,” he added.

“It gives you a whole new sense of gratitude.”

This year the Soul Café team aimed to raise $165,000. As at Tuesday, when Newcastle Weekly went to print, they had raised more than $118,000.

Twenty people will face their fear of heights when they abseil down McDonald Jones Stadium this August to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Local leaders from both Newcastle and the Central Coast met at Lake Macquarie Airport last week for the launch of this year’s Leaders Leap.

In 2018, Newcastle Weekly editor Georgia Osland bravely completed the challenge not once, but twice.

This time around, journalist Ben Murphy will join in the action.

news Shed’s plea for new home A place dedicated to the health and wellbeing of men in Newcastle is on the hunt for a new home for the third time in five years.

Newcastle Men’s Shed will need to vacate its current premises at 50 Clyde Street, Hamilton North, by the end of August.

After moving into the property, which was described as “very rundown and not secure”, on an initial one-year lease, the group took on the challenge and brought it up to a standard where it could operate.

This included putting a ceiling in the building, painting and repairing holes in the walls, building and fitting new lockable doors, and pulling electrical wiring throughout the property.

Despite their hard work, the site’s landlord has opted not to renew the lease. The shed claimed that its improvements reportedly made the

premises possible to rent out at a full commercial rate, which was triple the present figure – something the group simply could not afford.

Public officer Paul Schiebaan said it was desperate to find a suitable location within Newcastle for its 80plus members.

“More and more men are moving into smaller homes and apartments, so the need to share a shed is really important,” he said.

Mr Schiebaan added members undertook a range of activities, from helping each other with personal projects, to charity events and manufacturing and maintenance for organisations such as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Hamilton Business Chamber.

“We enable men of all ages to socialise and participate in activities in practical ways that encourage the development of good health, self

esteem and support for each other and the community in general,” he said.

“Depression and anxiety are a real issue for men, particularly those who are transitioning into, or in, retirement.

“The shed is a welcoming and safe environment – our aim is to improve the health and wellbeing of members and reduce the number of men who are at risk of preventable health issues that may emanate from

isolation.”

The group is seeking a space of about 250 to 300 square metres, located within the inner-city suburbs of Newcastle, for the next one to two years.

During this time, it hopes to find funding and an appropriate site for the construction of its own shed.

When all three of Jane Goldsmith’s children were treated at John Hunter Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit after they were born, she and husband Neil Keene were fortunate enough to be by their bedside.

Living at Dudley, the NBN journalist and newsreader didn’t have to travel far to be with their

son James, now seven, who spent a week in the NICU with breathing complications, nor with twins Lucy and Elizabeth when they arrived seven weeks early in 2016.

But Goldsmith knows not everyone is that lucky.

While she and Keene sought refuge in the Ronald McDonald Family Room, they struck up many

conversations with families that had travelled hundreds of kilometres to be with their sick children.

Most, like the Simpsons from Narrabri, were hosted by Ronald McDonald House on the hospital grounds so they could have 24/7 access to their son, Cohen, who was in hospital for six months around the time the twins were born.

“When you have a child who is sick or needing some extra help in the NICU, you want to be by their bedside, so Ronald McDonald House provides that for people who are a long way from home,” Goldsmith told Newcastle Weekly.

“And with the family room, you can be only one floor away – or, now, just next door [since the NICU family room opened in late 2017].”

To give back to the charity, Goldsmith will co-emcee one of its flagship fundraisers, the annual

Raise Love Charity Ball, at NEX Wests City on Saturday 20 July.

She will be joined by Hit 106.9 breakfast radio presenter Nick Gill, whose family stayed at Ronald McDonald House Westmead when he and wife Georgette’s twins, Otis and Harriet, were born – Harriet with severe congenital heart disease.

It won’t be the first time Goldsmith has supported the organisation, having helped promote the Ride for Sick Kids in an NBN Television commercial last year.

“I’m happy to support anything to do with kids, health and hospitals,” she said.

The goal of this year’s Raise Love Charity Ball is to raise enough money to cover 1,611 nights’ accommodation for families with sick or injured children. Go to rmhnnsw. org.au/raise-love for tickets.

A Special Commission of Inquiry into the drug ‘ice’ has visited East Maitland this week to hear evidence about crystal methamphetamine use in the Hunter and New England regions.

The public hearings, which started on Tuesday and wrap up today (Thursday) at the East Maitland Court House, sought to examine the prevalence of the drug in these regions, as well as the impacts of, and responses to, its use.

The commission was established by the state government to inquire into: the nature, prevalence and impacts of the drug and other illicit amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) in NSW; the adequacy of current measures; and options to strengthen the response to the use of these drugs, including law enforcement, education, treatment, and rehabilitation.

The commissioner, professor Dan Howard SC, said crystal methamphetamine and other ATS’ were clearly having serious impacts across the Hunter and New England.

“The commission will hear from the families, communities and professionals affected, and look into opportunities to improve how we respond to the use of these illicit drugs,” Professor Howard said.

NSW Health data shows, in 201617, the rate of methamphetaminerelated hospitalisations in the Hunter New England Local Health District was 159 per 100,000 people – higher than the state average.

In comparison, it was 8.6 per 100,000 people in 2009-10.

Newcastle Transport’s On-Demand bus service is set to double in size from the end of the month.

The expanded service will reach 27,000 more residents in Redhead, Jewells, Floraville, Croudace Bay, Valentine, Belmont and Belmont North.

On-Demand buses pick up travellers from a point close to their home and drop them off at a designated point, close to their destination, within the On-

Demand area.

The service operates in addition to timetabled bus routes.

Meanwhile, some weekend bus routes in Lake Macquarie are on the chopping block.

Information obtained by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union shows that routes 41, 43 and 48, which service Charlestown to Warners Bay and suburbs in between, will be cut from one-hourly to twohourly on weekends from 30 June.

HMAS Newcastle commander Anita Sellick has been honoured with the Key to the City at a ceremony to farewell the ship before it is decommissioned later this month.

Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes presented the born-and-bred Novocastrian with the ceremonial honour at the weekend.

“It’s an honour to present the Key

to the City to commander Sellick in recognition of her services to Newcastle and the Royal Australian Navy,” Cr Nelmes said.

Commander Sellick assumed command of HMAS Newcastle in January 2018.

She joined the Royal Australian Navy 24 years earlier after graduating from the Australian Defence Force

Academy with a Bachelor of Science.

For meritorious service, she was awarded a Conspicuous Medal in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours; and holds a Chief of Joint Operations Group Commendation for a past command.

Commander Sellick embarked on her final voyage in control of HMAS Newcastle when it sailed out of the heads for the final time on Tuesday.

HMAS Newcastle is one of four Adelaide Class Guided Missile Frigates (FFG) in service with the Royal Australian Navy.

In recent years, she has been deployed in support of peacekeeping operations in East Timor, the Solomon Islands, and Operation CATALYST in the Persian Gulf.

Since it was commissioned in 1993, the ship has maintained close links with the city through active support of her adopted charity

organisation, Newcastle Senior School – formerly known as the Hunter Orthopaedic School – at Waratah.

“HMAS Newcastle and her amazing crew have worked tirelessly throughout their association to support the school community with both financial contributions and experiences,” the school’s relieving principal, Deone Bennett, said.

“The ship’s company has raised substantial funds, providing the school with a bus, undertaking working bees and joining in sporting activities.

“And for this we sincerely thank members of the ship’s company, past and present.”

After more than 25 years of service, HMAS Newcastle will finally be decommissioned at the Garden Island Naval base in Sydney on Sunday 30 June.

The charity ultimately aims to ensure that no partner or child of a deceased or former serving officer will ever feel forgotten or in need.

Lake Macquarie Superintendent Danny Sullivan says, while the event is about raising awareness and funds, it will also promote five key lifestyle factors.

“These are: to move a little more, eat a little better, stress a little less, connect a little more,

and have gratitude for the things you have,” Superintendent Sullivan says.

“This can help anyone to live a better life – we want everyone to live the five principles that we’re talking about so that we can all connect.

“The event will bring us together to acknowledge our police who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but also to appreciate just how great Lake Macquarie is as a community.

A new $2 million grandstand pavilion has been officially unveiled at Mitchell Park Oval in Merewether.

Representatives from Merewether Carlton Rugby Club, South Newcastle Rugby League Club and Merewether District Cricket Club joined Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes to celebrate its completion.

The glass pavilion sits above a new gym and refurbished change rooms in the existing Clarke Grandstand following a partnership between Newcastle council, local sporting clubs and a community gardening project.

Merewether Carlton Rugby Club green room project manager, John Davis, said the new green room and stand would be a wonderful asset to the club and wider community.

“This project not only delivers a new home for our club, but also rejuvenates a 50-year-old council asset to provide first-rate facilities for other users,” he said.

“In some respects, it is a return home for us as the Clarke Stand is named after two of the founding fathers of our club, Ted and Roy Clarke.”

Pineapple gingerbread crumble Serves 4 Prep 15 mins Cook 25 mins ¾ cup rolled oats ¼ cup wholemeal flour 2 Tbsp slivered almonds, chopped finely 75g cold butter or cold coconut oil 3 Tbsp honey 1 small pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks 1 tsp ginger ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp ground cloves ¼ cup water 2 Tbsp shredded coconut, to serve

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fanforced). To make the crumble, mix together the oats, flour, almonds, butter or coconut oil and honey until sticky breadcrumbs form. Place in the fridge for 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the pineapple. Mix together the pineapple, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and water in a large baking dish.

Place coconut flakes in a small frying pan set over medium heat and toast for 1 minute. Sprinkle the pineapple with crumble and bake for 25 minutes or until the crumble is golden and pineapple caramelised slightly. Remove from the oven and serve topped with toasted coconut flakes. You can serve with a side of vanilla ice cream or custard, but the crumble is just as delicious on its own.

Spicy pork tacos with pineapple salsa Makes 8 tacos Prep 10 mins Cook 25 mins 350g pork fillet 2 tsp olive oil 1 Tbsp peri peri seasoning 1 small pineapple Ÿ small red onion small handful freshly chopped coriander ½ red long chili 2 tsp apple cider vinegar Ÿ tsp sea salt or to taste good pinch freshly ground black pepper 1 small avocado 1 lime 8 mini tortillas

Preheat oven to 180C. Drizzle the pork with olive oil and sprinkle with peri peri spice mix, rubbing it well into the meat.

You can cut the fillet in half to allow it to fit into the pan. Heat a large frying pan over medium high heat and sear the pork for 5-6 minutes on each side, turning regularly.

When the meat is done, allow it to rest wrapped in aluminium foil for 5 minutes.

Peel, core and finely dice the pineapple.

Peel and finely slice the onion. Cut the chilli in half and remove seeds, finely dice the flesh. Finely chop the coriander.

Combine the pineapple, onion, chilli and coriander in a bowl and season with apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper.

Scoop avocado flesh into a small bowl and drizzle with juice from half a lime.

Cut remaining lime half in to wedges and reserve for serving.

Heat tortillas wrapped in aluminium foil in the oven for 10 minutes. Once the pork has rested, slice it into 5mm-thin slices.

To serve, top each tortilla with a spoonful of avocado, 4-5 slices of pork and a generous topping of pineapple salsa.

Serve lime wedge on the side.

While I slowly took it in, I recalled Peter’s earlier story of an American tourist who visited the Watagans while in the region.

“She’d been to the rainforest in Guatemala, and she thought it was better here than there in terms of the bushland,” he says.

High praise indeed.

It is precisely why Lake Macquarie City Council chose to use the Watagans as one of its star attractions in a $200,000 Love the Lake campaign.

The largest tourism push in Lake Macquarie’s history has targeted the lucrative overnight Sydney market, with research showing visitors under the age of 45 are the best fit for the city’s natural assets and outdoor attractions.

“We have one of the most diverse cities in NSW in terms of our geography and natural beauty,” Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser says.

“Postcard-perfect beaches, wild mountain ranges and the lake itself all sit side-by-side.”

As we jumped in the car and drove into the Watagans National Park, it seemed strange that I had not visited this place before.

“Not many people realise that we have this on our doorstep, I mean, it’s only around 50 minutes from Newcastle,” Out and About Adventures owner-operator, Peter Vaughan, tells me.

He drops us at a picnic site and gives us the rundown for the next few hours.

I’m full of nerves and excitement ahead of my first abseil.

After a short 10-minute walk through the bush, we arrive at Gap Creek Falls.

Usually, in peak periods, this breathtaking spot can be packed with 20 or more people, Peter says, but, on this occasion, we have it all to ourselves.

Time for houseplant TLC Sitting inside today nursing my very sick Felix (my big, beautiful, boofy tomcat) has forced me to look around at my neglected houseplants – the Madonna Lily with dead flowers, needing a drink; a half-dead Maiden Hair fern and a flowerless African violet.

Winter is a great time to assess

Their Fiddleleaf Figs (Ficus lyrata) were becoming unhappy, showing signs of stress with leaf drop and discoloration.

In each case, they were standing next to a glass panel, which they do love in summer, but feel that glass at night and it is becoming very cold – time to move them into a warmer spot.

• Time to check lawns for bindii – these can be dug out if sparse, otherwise apply a designated produce, following the instructions carefully.

• Japonica camellias should be disbudded, removing multiple buds to allow blooms to open.

• When Sasanqua camellias finish flowering, they can be pruned and fed with cow manure.

TRAVEL David and I love to travel. We are not really tourists but great travellers, we just wander around and experience places.

We often miss tourist attractions but enjoy the atmosphere and the people we meet along the way.

My favourite things INNER-CITY LIVING Here we are celebrating inner-city living and light rail progress with our inner-city dog Juliet.

It was a bit daunting to move from a big house in a semi-rural environment to the middle of Newcastle, but it is good to make changes and do something new. There is a lot to love here.

Wendy Franklin TOCAL FIELD DAYS MANAGER

Wendy Franklin has served a record-breaking 10 years as the manager of Tocal Field Days. The annual three-day event offers farming on show and provides support to local farming organisations. This year’s edition attracted more than 20,000 people to Tocal Agricultural Centre in Paterson. Prior to this role, Wendy trained in drafting – somewhat of a lost skill now – before starting C-Shirt, a range of sun protective clothing, in the 1990s. After selling the business, she ‘retired’ for a few years and then, longing for a challenge, started working in the Kurri Kurri area as a town coordinator, which saw her collaborate on various community projects. Wendy, alongside great volunteers, established the successful Mural Project, as well as the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival. She met her husband, David, travelling from London to Kathmandu on the back of a truck and they have been married for 37 years.

LOVE A lot of people said ours was a holiday romance and David, whose family are in Canada, had to make the move to live in Australia. He was on a 90-day visa and if we did not get married within that timeframe he had to go back to Canada. Needless to say, we met the deadline.

CHILDREN My greatest achievement is our three children and my greatest joy is spending time with them as adults. After making the move to Newcastle, we are grateful they all gradually moved too and all live within a few minutes of us.
