This week...

From the editor It’s true what they say: a Sunday well spent brings a week of content.

Sunday, for me, is usually reserved for a little housework so I can begin the new week feeling calmer and more prepared for the days ahead.

Unfortunately, that often comes at the expense of feeling well-rested. I fi nd myself back at work on a Monday wondering where my weekend went, and, let’s face it, they’re short enough as it is.

But I’m working on that. Last week, I went an entire Sunday without so much as thinking about chores (apart from making sure we had clean clothes to wear and dishes to eat from). Instead, I thought: What would I like to do with my day?

Well, being a new pup owner, I couldn’t be entirely selfish, but I found a way for both Wesley and I to get out and enjoy the sunshine together: a Beagle meet-up.

Yes, you read that right. We were both in heaven on a community walk with Maitland & Hunter Beagles, a group I’d only discovered the night before. Talk about timing!

It might sound silly, but I left feeling more refreshed and more like myself than I had in weeks. I also gained a new appreciation for my fur-baby.

news Landmark trial finds ideal prostate cancer treatment

Colin Sandeman didn’t hesitate when he was asked to participate in Australia and New Zealand’s biggest cancer trial.

Today, at the age of 75, he has returned to his normal life – sailing, canoeing and tending to his beloved bees.

“I don’t think about having prostate cancer now,” he said.

“It’s in the past. I’m normal, and so many other blokes are too – they’re curing a lot of people.”

The RADAR trial, conducted through TROG Cancer Research, a world-leading trials group based

in Newcastle, compared the use of hormone treatment, long versus short-term, coupled with radiation therapy, for newly-diagnosed aggressive but localised prostate cancer.

It aims to spare males the many side effects associated with longer durations of testosterone suppression, between 28 to 36 months, which has been commonly used alongside radiotherapy.

The trial monitored 1,071 men at 23 treatment centres in Australia and New Zealand over a 10-year period.

All men received six months of testosterone suppression, using the drug leuprorelin, followed by radiotherapy.

They were then allocated to undergo either an additional 12 months of testosterone suppression or no further treatment.

The trial found the combined 18month option, plus radiotherapy, was the most effective, compared

to the six-month period.

Professor Jim Denham, who led the landmark trial, said the findings showed a 30% reduction in deaths due to prostate cancer, as well as a 40% decrease in cancer spreading to other areas of the body.

“We also found that the men who received the 18 months of treatment did not experience more side effects or impaired quality of life factors than those who received the six months of treatment,” he said.

“The confirmation that quality of life in men treated [in the trial] was not inferior to [those] in Australian men of the same age came from the 421 men who participated in our ‘Life 10 years after prostate cancer treatment’ sub-study.

“Around 17,000 Australian men each year are diagnosed with prostate cancer and we are constantly looking at ways to beat this disease.”

A non-profit organisation that helped “people with creativity, not capital” tick in Newcastle will cease to operate next month due to financial difficulties.

Renew Newcastle served as a major catalyst for change within the city over the past decade through the temporary activation of underutilised space.

However, it announced this week a “costly” investment in The Station as a venue had taken a toll.

General manager Christopher Saunders claimed all existing funding sources stopped shortly after the organisation won the tender to operate the former Newcastle station in late 2017.

“We have invested every last dollar and every ounce of ourselves to attract, support and promote new and existing events to establish The Station,” he said.

“But, at a time and a location that is yet to be on people’s list as a destination, it has been impossible to generate enough income to continue.”

Mr Saunders added that, with little income for the past 12 months and an expensive path to opening The Station, the board was not prepared to risk financial ruin.

Renew stated it had worked with 25 individuals, local businesses and organisations to host almost 40 events since The Station opened last October.

Activities included parkour, live art and yoga, as well as music and

comedy skits.

Four indoor spaces have also hosted longer-term tenancies offering retail, hospitality, education and start-up innovation, while Renew also enabled the installation of free Wi-Fi on the platform.

However, Mr Saunders said it had been almost impossible to negotiate commercial fees for hire, with free events an “expectation”.

Despite the announcement, he believed Renew’s presence in the city for the past 10 years had shown that cultural participation could lead to a unique and vibrant city.

Renew cited key benefits such as the creation of jobs and skills development; volunteer engagement; and improved business confidence.

It aimed to remove the barriers to entry, lower the cost and complexity of participation, and encourage artistic risk by allowing people to try new, creative ideas.

“Renew approached the opportunity presented at The Station with this same vigour and ideology,” Mr Saunders said.

“It has been a platform for experimentation.”

Renew, which wants to wrap up its operations around 8 March, is in discussions with the Hunter Central Coast Development Corporation in a bid to work towards a smooth transition at The Station.

news Government sets light rail launch date Rate rise proposal The state government has announced the Newcastle Light Rail will launch on Sunday 17 February with a free community open day.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, said the event was a chance to celebrate the project’s completion.

“The NSW government is hosting a community open day before the service officially starts as a way to say thank-you for people’s tolerance during construction and to give them an opportunity to experience Newcastle Light Rail, free of charge,” he said.

“The open day will be one big celebration, with something for all ages and tastes at unique events near each of Newcastle Light Rail’s six stops.

“Light rail will run throughout the event, allowing people to venture from stop-to-stop, exploring the city in a completely new way.”

Mr Constance added standard light rail services would start the following day – Monday 18 February – marking an historic day for the city.

He believed that, with 4,000 new homes and almost 8,000 more jobs expected in the city centre by 2036, Newcastle Light Rail would play

an “important role in keeping this city moving and reducing congestion well into the future”.

Keolis Downer Hunter managing director, Mark Dunlop, said the Newcastle Transport team would put boots on the ground to help passengers use the new service.

“As this is a completely new system, we anticipate there will be some minor kinks to iron out initially as passengers get used to it and as the last of the light rail vehicles are fully commissioned,” he said.

“We expect the service to improve daily as the system is optimised and we’re committed to helping our passengers get the most out of light rail.”

Frequent light rail services will run from 5am to 1am daily once it launches.

The service features 2.7 kilometres in length, following the old rail corridor for about one-third of the route before moving onto Hunter and Scott streets.

Stops are located at Newcastle Interchange, Honeysuckle, Civic, Crown Street, Queens Wharf, and Newcastle Beach.

Mayor Ryan Palmer says Port Stephens council wants to “attract people, jobs and investment” amid a decision to endorse a 7.5% per annum rate rise over a seven-year period.

The council opted to submit an application to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) at its latest meeting.

Mr Palmer believes that, with more than 20 community consultation events held throughout July and August 2018, it is time to take a step forward on the issue.

“The community has unequivocally told us they want more than we can provide with our current income,” he says.

“They’ve asked us to deliver an array of community projects and infrastructure and, while council is financially fit, we simply don’t have the resources to deliver the major projects our community wants.”

He adds the community’s wishlist includes better town centres, safer roads, more effective drainage, stronger local economies, more jobs and a brighter future.

The application is due to IPART on 11 February.

Volunteers to the rescue They don’t just climb ladders, cut down trees or jump into floodwaters.

As NSW State Emergency Service (SES) units across the Hunter Region start recruitment for 2019, Maitland City’s community engagement officer, Alex Varley, says there are roles that cater for everyone.

“We take members from 16 [years of age] and there’s no such thing as, ‘I’m too old, or I don’t want to get on a roof’ – we’ve got a job for everybody,” she says.

events, while it also supports other agencies like the Rural Fire Service and NSW Police.

Apart from the unit, other ways to get involved include a community action team, as well as corporate or spontaneous volunteers.

“If you can’t commit to weekly training and a few weekends here and there, plus regular callouts, then there are other options available,” Ms Varley says.

“We have spontaneous volunteers who can register on the website at any time and then, in a big operation, like a major flood or storm, we can call upon them to assist.”

Ms Varley adds the Hunter Region’s booming population growth has also prompted units to push for more community action teams.

Volunteers within the group can use their existing skills and experience, as well as basic training provided by the NSW SES, to help prepare their community and keep people safe

during severe weather events.

“We’ve got a group in Millers Forest who have made their own little association,” Ms Varley says.

“They’ve registered with us, we’ve worked with them for the last three years, and now they’ve got their own flood action plan and know what they are going to do.

“Having these groups – they might be on the outskirts of town or in places like Wallsend where there’s a high risk of flooding or flash flooding – will help these communities to be self sufficient and reduce risk, and therefore, impact.

“Reducing the number of lives or properties lost is obviously the key point that we’re all trying to achieve.”

Maitland City will host an information night on 12 March from 7pm at 20 Waterworks Road, Rutherford.

The community has come together to thank Hunter Water for its generous donation to Port Stephens Koalas in the aftermath of a devastating bushfire in the Mambo Wetlands.

The corporation donated $10,000 to the not-for-profit organisation to purchase urgent medical supplies to treat injured koalas.

Just days after the December blaze, which burnt out more than 82 hectares of bushland, more than 14 koalas were admitted to the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary for treatment.

Secretary Ron Land told Newcastle Weekly in January just how costly burns were to treat.

“The burns cream costs $100 for a 100-gram tube, and we use one tube per day on each koala burned,” he said.

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington joined the chorus to acknowledge Hunter Water’s contribution.

“The bushfire had a devastating impact on our local koala population, and our volunteer koala carers worked around the clock to save and heal as many animals as possible,” she said.

“There’s no doubt that Hunter Water’s sizeable donation helped save our koalas at a time when they face numerous threats to their ongoing survival.

“This is exactly what our community is about – this is why I love Port Stephens and the Hunter so much.”

Construction of a state-of-theart koala eco-tourism centre and hospital is currently under way in One Mile as an expansion of the current facility at Treescape.

Show celebrates the land Maitland Show organisers are excited about this year’s program as they look to “keep it relevant” amid an array of challenges.

The 2019 edition, themed Celebrate the Land, will kick off on Friday 15 February, with the traditional school day, official opening, rodeo, and showgirl presentation all set to feature.

An action-packed second day

will include events such as the dog show, camel races, demolition derby, pavilions and fireworks, before the show wraps up at 3pm on Sunday 17 February.

The popular animal nursery is open across all three days.

Maitland Showground manager Fiona Abernethy says organisers have worked hard to remain true to the city’s agricultural roots.

“It’s nice for the kids to get up close to the sheep and goats - because we’re becoming increasingly urban, they’ve never had that experience with [these animals],” she says.

“One of the biggest challenges, with the changing demographics in Maitland, is keeping the show relevant.

“We’re big believers in staying true to the agricultural roots to give people an experience they otherwise wouldn’t have in terms of the agricultural side of things.”

Ms Abernethy adds an “ageing volunteer pool” put in countless hours to ensure the show runs

smoothly. “[Another] big challenge for all the shows is that most of the volunteers are getting older, and then you’ve got to turn that interest in growing your own food, knitting and crocheting into entries,” she says.

All proceeds from the show will go towards maintaining and improving the showground.

The 2019 Maitland Show will open from 7am to 11pm on the Friday, 7am to 10pm on Saturday, and 7am to 3pm on Sunday.

Shed works towards bright future

Its members have worked hard to build a bright future for the group and local community.

Now, Elermore Vale Men’s Shed waits patiently as its new home nears completion.

The group, which consists of 50 members, has operated out of a “crammed” site off Croudace Road since 2011, but will soon move in to a brandnew shed just metres away.

Chairman Dave Corbett hopes the facility will be finished within six months.

“We're getting there,” he says.

“We applied for a couple of big grants and got just enough to build that shed, with a little bit left over.

“Now we’re just waiting on the paperwork to be signed off; we’ve got the money to put the power on, then do the sewerage, but we’ll be bone dry money-wise after that I think.”

There has been no slowing down from members as they await the new shed’s completion, with the list of community projects continuing to grow.

Over the past seven years, they have helped to construct a chicken yard for South Wallsend Public School, six large school bag racks for Plattsburg Public School, outdoor tables and

chairs for a homeless women’s refuge, wheelchair access ramps for three homes, and a walking frame for a girl with cerebral palsy.

Members also completed seating around a sand pit and cover anchorages for Elermore Vale Public School, raised garden beds and seating around a tree at Calvary Aged Care, donated food and clothing to Katoomba after a bushfire, and repaired and restored furniture.

Secretary Gordon Steele says the shed has become a “sort of go-to” for the community.

“We’ve done a huge amount and I think we’ve made a reputation for ourselves locally,” he says.

“One of the things I like about [the shed] the most is that the blokes are volunteers – we’ve got a boilermaker, two electricians, a plumber – there are people from all sorts of trades and backgrounds, and we can do just about anything as far as that’s concerned.”

While money has been the shed’s biggest issue, members take part in a monthly barbecue at Bunnings Wallsend, host welding courses in partnership with WEA, and conduct raffles to help raise income.

news Government races in to back “life-changing phenomenon”

Parkrun Australia has been handed a $1.8 million federal government grant to encourage older residents to get active.

The grant, announced in Launceston at the weekend as part of a Move It Aus – Better Ageing program, aimed to empower people for whom physical activity, through walking, running or volunteering, was not the norm.

Parkrun is a free, five-kilometre event that takes place every Saturday morning in about 350

parks and open spaces across the country.

Newy parkrun founder, Dave Robertson, said he was confident the event would prove popular when it launched in 2012.

However, what he hadn’t forecast was the impact it would make on the less active section of the community.

“Largely due to its simple approach, free from any significant barriers to participation, it was clear that people of all shapes, sizes and levels of running or walking ability were attracted to parkrun,” he said.

“The friendly, laidback, fun and supportive vibe of the event, which was existent from day one, can be strongly linked to the great community and culture we have here in Newcastle and across the broader Hunter Region.”

Robertson said there had been a number of success stories, with one involving a previously overweight Carrington resident who watched parkrun from his doorstep each week.

“This fellow made the decision to start walking, with the goal of one day getting around

the entire five-kilometre course,” he said.

“After many months, the big day came. It happened to be on New Year’s Day. “When he crossed the finish line, the volunteers watching on were concerned as he was overcome with tears.

“These, however, were not tears of pain, but tears of joy brought on after conquering his goal.”

Aside from the grant, parkrun Australia has also teamed up with a public health campaign called Live Lighter to promote parkrun as part of living a healthier and happier life in 2019.

Robertson, in turn, encouraged more locals to tap into the “life-changing phenomenon”.

He added the flow-on benefits for the majority of parkrun converts included broadening their exercise habits, improved mental health, and deeper social connections.

2 cups Greek yoghurt

200g good quality white chocolate

1/4 cup shredded coconut

1/4 cup (60 ml) pure cream

1 tsp vanilla paste or extract

1/4 cup passionfruit pulp, including seeds (3–4 fresh passionfruit)

2 tsp maple syrup 1/4 cup fresh passionfruit pulp, plus 1 Tbsp extra (4–5 fresh passionfruit)

1/2 tsp vanilla paste or extract

2 cups (500g) pureed mango

200g shortbread biscuits, crushed

1 tsp lime juice Method

To decorate 100g white chocolate, extra

Line a 20cm cake tin with baking paper.

toasted flaked almonds, lightly crushed

In a medium bowl, combine yoghurt, coconut, vanilla and maple syrup. Spread yoghurt mixture evenly across the base of the prepared tin and freeze for 1–2 hours, until just firm to the touch.

Remove pan from freezer and set on bench for 5 minutes. Use baking paper to lift slice onto a cutting board and leave 5–10 minutes to thaw slightly.

Cut into 12 bars, serve immediately or store in the freezer for a handy snack.

Tip! For a dairy-free/vegan treat, replace Greek yoghurt with an equal quantity of coconut yoghurt.

Scoop the passionfruit chocolate onto a baking paper lined tray. Use clean hands to roll into balls.

Refrigerate the formed truffles for 1 hour.

Melt extra white chocolate (in the microwave or in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water) and drizzle over the cold truffles. Sprinkle with toasted almonds and coconut before the chocolate sets.

Store truffles in a covered container in the refrigerator for up five days, serve at room temperature.

Method Finely chop 200g white chocolate.

Warm cream in a heavy-based saucepan until it just starts to boil.

Remove cream from heat, add chopped chocolate and stir once. Allow cream and chocolate to sit for one minute, then stir until all the chocolate has melted.

Stir well, then scrape warm mixture into a shallow dish and refrigerate for 3–4 hours until firm.

A little party never killed nobody.

Au contraire, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service’s annual Rescue Ball raises money to help save lives, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This year’s Great Gatsby-themed ball, at Newcastle Entertainment Centre, has been brought forward from September to Friday 3 May. Now in its 27th year, the ball was traditionally held in winter until the Pasha Bulker storm of 2007, when it got postponed as the region recovered.

Its new position on the social calendar aligns it with the service’s other events across Northern NSW. The black-tie ball remains one of the largest in Australia, drawing a crowd of up to 1,400 people.

Each year it draws inspiration from cultural and international themes, historic and futuristic timelines, as well as pop culture and the arts.

Stephanides, will be line pilot Mark Overton’s first, having joined the service in September last year after a stint with the WA Police Air Wing.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he told Newcastle Weekly.

“As a pilot, I see firsthand the impact of the work we do, so it’s great to see the level of support the Rescue Ball receives from our community.

“I get to operate within a fantastic team environment with access to the best modern equipment and I am afforded the opportunity to help people.”

Mark’s most memorable rescue mission to date involved a 14-month-old girl.

“I watched the medical team revive her after she was recovered from a backyard pool,” he said.

“I have an eight-month-old daughter myself, so that really hit home for me. That was a good day.”

It costs about $40 million a year to keep the service’s helicopters and crews ready to respond to rescues just like these.

About $12 million is raised through sponsorships, volunteers, support group activities, partnerships and events like the Rescue Ball.

Professional dancers catapult Newcastle onto international stage Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub has thrust Newcastle onto the world stage.

Last week the studio welcomed Israeli artist and choreographer Rachel Erdos and fellow dancer Tomer Giat for an International/ Regional Propel Residency, culminating in a performance on Saturday 9 February.

Erdos is an internationallyacclaimed, award winning choreographer known for the diversity of her work.

Together, with professional dancers Alexandra Ford, Allie Graham and Mikayla Nangle, Erdos and Giat will showcase The Loneliness Project, which Erdos says explores isolation in the world of social media.

The contemporary-style piece will continue to evolve over daily rehearsals until the final performance.

“I like to come with an idea, but until you meet the dancers and see how they move, you never know how it’s going to turn out,” Erdos says.

“We’ve all been working together really well from the start.”

Ford, 27, grew up in Jewels and says she is excited for the opportunity.

“I have recently returned from dancing professionally overseas, including [in] Israel, and to have a professional opportunity at home is great,” she says.

“The chance to share not only dance but different cultures in my home town is fantastic.

“Dance is so universal that you can communicate with someone [in the audience] you’ve never met before.”

This marks Catapult’s second international collaboration, after closing the 2018 season with its first

International Propel Residency.

In December, the studio hosted Lee Brummer, associate director of ilDance, Sweden, along with three Swedish dancers.

Catapult director Cadi McCarthy says the collaboration with Erdos will be ongoing, with the aim of adding the polished show to Catapult’s 2021 season.

“Propel gives regional, emerging artists the chance to participate in multicultural choreographic exchange right here in Newcastle,” she says.

This weekend’s performance is almost like a behind-the-scenes look at the production, complete with a Q&A after the show.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to see how professional dancers work and how it all comes together,” McCarthy says.

“I love sharing work in development. The Q&A will give insight into how this high level of performance is created.”

Phipps takes her cue

You can always spot a born performer at a young age.

For instance, Corlette teen Jasmine Phipps enjoyed playing dress-ups and staging concerts when she was a child.

Not much has changed since then.

The 17-year-old has been hand-picked for the Talent Development Project (TDP), a joint initiative between the NSW Department of Education and the entertainment industry that prepares students for careers in music and entertainment.

Past graduates include Human Nature, The McClymonts, Angus & Julia Stone, John Foreman and David Harris (Wicked, Miss Saigon).

More than 300 students auditioned, 70 of which were successful, including Phipps.

After three workshops, the students had to again audition for a position, and 50 gained entry.

Another three workshops and another audition later, 25 students were chosen.

Phipps, who has been singing, dancing and performing since she was eight, is still

standing.

She performed her solo, selfchoreographed show, titled The Girl Next Door, at The Dungeon in Adamstown last weekend as phase two of the TDP. She’s now rehearsing for a group performance alongside fellow Hunter School of the Performing Arts student, Tom Hamilton, and Kurri Kurri local Ryan Hemsworth, in Sydney on Monday 11 February in phase three of the project.

From there, just 12 students will graduate the TDP. “Even if I don’t graduate, the workshops have been amazing through all the phases and I think I’ll take away a lot from that,” Phipps said.

“If not, my backup is to become a teacher.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle audiences can catch Phipps in action in Young People’s Theatre’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan classic, Hot Mikado, from Friday 8 to Saturday 23 February.

Avatar Monday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (2009) The story follows paraplegic marine Jake Sully (Aussie Sam Worthington), who travels to a far-off moon to gather intelligence about the Na’vi species who live on Pandora. While there Sully meets local Neytiri (Zoe Saldana, pictured), and what develops is essentially Pocahontas in space as Sully questions the effects his own species has on the peace-loving Na’vi. If you haven’t seen it, it’s simply out of this world.

Sunday, 7MATE, 10.05pm, MA15+ (2006) Kate Beckinsale (pictured) returns in this follow-up to the 2003 saga. Beckinsale is modern-day vamp Selene, a “Death Dealer” who – along with her half-werewolf beau Michael (Scott Speedman) – puts aside the smiting of nasty beasties to seek out the origins of both the vampire and werewolf bloodlines. This leads them into conflict with the creepy Viktor (Bill Nighy) who has his own grand designs for a new world order. Director Len Wiseman hasn’t evolved much as a filmmaker, but that matters little, as fans will love this sequel’s dogged determination to replicate the dour style, relentless action and striking visuals of the original.

My favourite things FAMILY I love spending time with my wife Kirralee and three children Zac, 14, Dane, 11, and Bonnie, 7.

The five of us will often go out for breakfast or dinner together and love going for a quick drive on the weekend for an ice-cream or milkshake.

We are lucky to have all of our family close by.

EXERCISE Exercise has always been a big part of my life since I was young and it’s no different today. I need to stay as healthy as possible, especially since my diagnosis. I train at least four to five days a week, I’m so lucky to have six best mates who join me early each morning.

COFFEE My normal daily routine after exercise is coffee. I cannot start my day without my macadamia cappuccino. I have been having my coffee on Macamilk for a few years now and it is one of my favourite parts of the day.

I love having a coffee with my training group, or enjoying a quiet moment with Kirralee.

MARK HUGHES FOUNDATION

FOUNDER, MARK HUGHES FOUNDATION

Born in Kurri Kurri, Mark Hughes spent eight years with the Newcastle Knights, during which he played in both the 1997 and 2001 premiership-winning campaigns. He also represented NSW in the 2001 State of Origin series, before joining French club Catalans Dragons for one season at the end of 2005. Mark went on to become founder of the Mark Hughes Foundation following a diagnosis of highgrade brain cancer in 2013. Since then, he has, alongside an army of volunteers, helped organise fundraisers for vital research into the illness. Mark is a proud Novocastrian and was named as Newcastle’s Citizen of the Year during the Australia Day ceremony in 2018.

As much as I wish we never had to set up MHF due to my cancer diagnosis, it has brought me and many others such hope. I’ve met many amazing people and trekked around the world, including Kokoda, Borneo, Mount Everest, and Kilimanjaro later this year.

SPORT Playing sport or watching it, either live or on TV, is another pastime of mine. I enjoy all types of sport but mostly rugby league. I coach my son’s under-12 team for South Newcastle – we are almost ready to start our season. I am also a proud ambassador for the Newcastle Knights.
