SES Maree, our sweet and sassy cover star, was rescued fi rstly by the NSW SES at the scene of a car crash, and then taken into care by the tireless volunteers at Port Stephens Koalas.

Maree lost her eyesight and suffered an acquired brain injury, which left her with a tendancy to turn in circles to the right when on the ground. Luckily, she found a permanent home in Port Stephens Koalas, where carers tend to her, and others like her, round the clock.

We take five with secretary and frontline rescuer, Ron Land, who sheds light on the inner workings of the 24/7 not-for-profit organisation, and discover just what it takes to meet the needs of sick and injured koalas.

It’s a sight Belmont and District Residents’ Action Group (BADRAG) president, Robin Gordon, thought she may never see again.

But, after campaigning for more than a decade, the group’s wish has finally come true.

An $850,000 revamp of the beloved swimming spot, damaged beyond repair in the April 2015 Superstorm, was officially unveiled just before Christmas.

Mrs Gordon said BADRAG was thrilled with the result and the community’s response.

The group fought hard for a return to the facility’s pre-1980s heyday.

Originally built in the 1940s, the baths were dismantled almost 40 years later.

“My heart is jumping for joy with what I see from about 5.30am every morning until dark,” Mrs Gordon said.

“Those baths are well and truly inhabited – there’s usually older people doing laps first, and then the kids and their parents come along.

“We were told they weren’t needed, but actions speak louder than words. “[The baths] brought Belmont alive in that part of the world and I could never have dreamt that so many people would be there [again].

“I’m over the moon.”

Mrs Gordon paid special tribute to Belmont resident Glyn Matthews, who kick-started the campaign to restore the baths.

The new facility features a 70-metre long jetty and shark netting around all four sides.

include the construction of a new amenities block with accessible change room, aquatic wheelchair storage, and foreshore landscaping.

In another timely move, Redhead’s popular beach kiosk reopened to the public late last month after a $470,000 makeover.

The kiosk was damaged when a fire tore through it in May 2017.

Its owners, Cargo Espresso’s

Murray and Maree Ruse, had operated out of a temporary shipping container on-site since the kiosk’s closure.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from the Redhead community since we started operating, and we hope they will continue to support us,” Mr Ruse said.

Region jumps on board in bid to end homelessness

The number of signatures on a pledge to end homelessness in the region has tripled since its launch.

The Newcastle and Hunter Ending Homelessness Pledge gathered 20 signatories when it kicked off in April 2018.

It now boasts 64.

The pledge is an initiative of the region’s Big Ideas Homelessness Network – a group, facilitated by Compass Housing, that consists of representatives from the community, as well as agencies who share an interest in ending homelessness.

Those signing the pledge are required to think about ways they can act to reduce homelessness, assist people experiencing it, and avoid contributing to the issue.

Every year, they will be asked to renew their pledge and report on what they have achieved.

Network chairperson, professor David Adamson, said homelessness had become the clearest expression of inequality and poverty in Australia.

He added the pledge was an important first step to enlist and embed support from a broader cross-section of the community.

It has been used effectively in other cities overseas, including in Canada, the USA, Wales and Scotland.

“Every business, agency and resident has a stake in

preventing homelessness and supporting people who experience homelessness,” he said.

“We are seeing pledge-taking organisations look at their policies and activities to ensure they’re not contributing to people’s homelessness, as well as what they can do to advocate for the end of homelessness.”

One of the most recent organisations to sign the pledge, Allambi Care, has produced a short video to educate and encourage others to join them, while also recognising the founding signatories.

The video features the mayors of Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock and Lake Macquarie, as well as teams from organisations including Hunter Water, Sparke Helmore, Beyond Bank, Castle Employment Services, Pegasus and Compass Housing.

Apart from the pledge, a national, Everybody’s Home five-point plan to fix Australia’s housing system calls for action to end homelessness by 2030.

The latest 2016 Census figures, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics last March, show homelessness rates are on the rise, up 12% in the Hunter since the previous Census.

Lake Macquarie Sports Awards are now open for nominations.

Airport targets new carrier for coveted Adelaide route FlyPelican has announced it will drop its Adelaide route from Newcastle Airport in late April.

More than 10,000 passengers took advantage of up to four direct flights each week since the route launched in March 2018.

Newcastle Airport chief executive, Peter Cock said, while it was disappointing the venture did not prove viable for FlyPelican, the airport had already held discussions with other carriers.

“Strong passenger numbers and a clear increase in demand from the Hunter’s community for better air travel options, provide a sound business case for other carriers to consider this route,” he said.

working with a number of carriers that can meet the longer-term needs of passengers choosing to fly into and out of the Hunter to a variety of potential destinations.”

In November, the airport reported passenger numbers 2.5% higher than the previous year, with more than 114,082 people choosing to fly through Newcastle.

FlyPelican’s chief executive, Paul Graham, reiterated the carrier’s commitment to Newcastle and the Hunter.

It will continue to provide flights to Dubbo, Canberra and Ballina from Newcastle.

FlyPelican is working with passengers who have booked flights post-26 April 2019.

Maitland PCYC has received a $75,000 grant to properly secure its carpark.

It didn’t take long for sweet and sassy SES Maree to capture the hearts of Port Stephens Koalas volunteers.

As her name suggests, the koala was rescued by the NSW SES in November 2017, when she was hit by a car, and taken into care by the volunteer organisation.

She suffered a head injury and loss of eyesight, which rescuers initially hoped she would regain.

However, a veterinary neurologist confirmed the loss was permanent.

The accident also caused damage to Maree’s frontal lobe and left her with a tendency to turn in circles to the right when on the ground.

“Where possible, we release koalas into the wild, but some are kept in care permanently because they can’t be released – Maree is one of them,” Port Stephens Koalas secretary Ron Land told Newcastle Weekly.

There are plenty more stories just like Maree’s to come out of the rescue organisation.

Established in 2016, Port Stephens Koalas operates 24/7 and exists solely to rescue and treat injured koalas, predominantly from the Tomaree and Tilligerry

peninsulas, but also from as far south as Morisset and as east as Muswellbrook, right up to the Port Macquarie border.

A team of 80 active volunteers – 25 of whom are frontline rescuers and carers – work tirelessly to combat the threat to koalas from development and subsequent habitat loss, one rescue at a time.

Last year, 58 koalas were rescued or found dead and another 31 released or relocated, clocking up 1,348 total days in care.

However, while the organisation is grateful for the funding it receives, it represents only a fraction of its annual operational costs.

“To put it in perspective, with the recent fires there have been a lot of burns victims,” Mr Land said.

“The burns cream costs $100 for a 100-gram tube, and we use one tube per day on each koala burned.”

Mr Land quelled any misunderstanding that the organisation received in-hand any of the state government’s recent $3 million commitment to a purposebuilt koala hospital.

news Groundbreaking research delves into Viking’s Disease A world-first clinical trial to find more effective treatment for a debilitating genetic condition is under way in Lake Macquarie.

GenesisCare and Hunter Hand Surgery have started recruiting 30 patients to take part in the first phase of the DEPART Study (Dupuytren’s disease: Evaluation of Preventative and Adjuvant and RadioTherapy), to determine whether radiotherapy can improve treatment.

Also known as Viking’s Disease, from its northern European origins, Dupuytren’s can severely affect hand mobility, impacting everyday tasks such as writing, getting dressed, and shaking hands.

It affects the fascia, the fibrous layer of tissue underneath the skin of the palm and fingers, causing scar

tissue (nodules and cords) to develop and trigger clawing of one or more fingers.

Famous sufferers include Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan and Bill Nighy.

Estimated to affect about 17% of Australians, the disease is most commonly seen in men over 40.

Seventeen patients have so far joined the trial, which seeks to determine if radiotherapy can be used to effectively manage and prevent the disease from progressing in both the early and later stages.

The study team includes hand surgeon, Dr Brett McClelland, and radiation oncologist, Dr Katherine Neville.

using needles to break up the scar tissue, enzyme injections to dissolve it, or surgery,” Dr McClelland said.

“Early results suggest that radiotherapy can also be beneficial, so we want to further investigate this finding and hopefully be able to prove its efficacy.”

The DEPART trial welcomes both male and female participants in good health, who are over the age of 30 and have been diagnosed with Dupuytren’s disease.

The second phase will include

expanding the study globally to 1,120 participants.

“We don’t see any of that money,” Mr Land added.

“This has had a perverse effect on our fundraising; we’ve still got to raise every dollar for our dayto-day operations.”

Slated for construction later this year, the state-of-the-art koala eco-tourism centre and hospital will house up to 12 koalas, from short-term observation to palliative care, adjacent to the existing rehabilitation clinics at Treescape, One Mile.

The first stage of the project has already been operational for more than a year, with round-theclock koala care now based at the

facility, where volunteers tend to the animals on a rostered basis.

The new hospital and ecotourism centre will double as a sanctuary, with the capacity to display upwards of 20 koalas under licence from the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

It is hoped the entire site will be up and running by this time next year.

In the meantime, Port Stephens Koalas is calling for financial support.

sport College’s punt pays off Mitchell Crawford landed in the United States sight unseen to try his luck at college football.

As it turns out, his luck was in.

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) took a punt on the unheralded Crawford amid the Miners’ struggles offensively in the 2018 Conference USA. The 24-year-old, who honed his kicking skills nearly 9,000 miles away in the Black Diamond AFL competition as a star with the Newcastle City Blues, quickly seized the opportunity.

In just his third game of American football, and in front of a crowd of 90,000 at Tennessee, Crawford fell one punt shy of the UTEP record of 13, held by five punters.

“It was an unreal experience – I never dreamt of doing anything like that,” he told Newcastle Weekly.

“It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Despite UTEP picking up just one win from its 12 fixtures, Crawford was named Player of the Game on three occasions and received an honourable mention for the Conference USA Team of the Year.

He admitted it took a while to adjust to certain aspects of the sport.

“The coaches were good in making sure I understood everything going into practice,” he said.

“The kicking transferred pretty much identically really, but just the practices and getting used to the amount of guys on the roster, which is about 100 instead of like 45 [with AFL], and how passionate they are about sport.”

sensation who made the All-Pro team after a stellar debut year with Seattle in 2018 that saw him produce unconventional rugby-style dropkicks and clutch plays.

Dickson put Crawford in touch with Prokick Australia – widely regarded as the world’s premier developer of American punters – and, from there, UTEP decided to delve into the Australian market for the first time.

“I was in the academy with

[Dickson] and just followed his lead,” Crawford said.

“I think there are three in the NFL currently and about 60 Prokick guys playing division 1 [NCAA] football.”

After his own highly-successful first year on a full scholarship, Crawford made the journey back to Newcastle for Christmas.

He will return to Texas later this month ahead of the preseason.

sport Pasha Dasha set for return It is expected to be Newcastle’s biggest canoe event.

The Pasha Dasha Grand Prix, NSW’s largest inter-club outrigger canoe racing regatta, will return this Saturday 12 January after a two-year hiatus.

More than 50 teams from 18 clubs across NSW, ACT and Queensland are set to compete in short and long-course races, ranging from 4.5 to 27 kilometres.

Local paddlers will be well represented, with 14 crews hoping to perform strongly in the talented field.

Race director Stephen Dawes said the unique “crew changes” race format, as well as the ability for spectators to watch from close vantage points along the Nobbys breakwall and the harbour foreshore, helped make the Pasha Dasha Grand Prix so popular.

“Outrigger canoe racing is one of Australia’s fastest-growing water sports, and a big plus for this event is that the public can see close-up all the action that usually happens out at sea,” Dawes said.

“Our course includes both flat water and open ocean racing, starting inside the harbour near Horseshoe Beach and running out along the inside of the southern breakwall before heading out into the open ocean off Nobbys Beach.

“The crew changes format in our 27km long course race is also unique.

“Instead of the usual six-person crew, each team has a crew of nine people, with crew member swapouts permitted on Horseshoe Beach after each 5.4km lap.

“So, the 27km race is effectively broken up into five separate races of 5.4kms, with crew members

“Our format benefits paddlers [who are] not confident of doing crew changes in open water, allowing them to build better experience in a competitive situation.

All event action will be focused around Horseshoe Beach, with a Welcome to Country scheduled for 7am, followed at 7.30am by the start of the one (OC1) and two-person (OC2) crew 4.5 and 9km races.

The event is hosted by Newcastle Outrigger Canoe Club, in association with Newcastle council.

Skaters’ European adventure A Hunter ice skating team will realise a dream when it represents Australia at two prestigious tournaments in Europe this month.

Ice Reflections Synchronised Skating Team is set to compete in the Mozart (Amade) Cup, an annual International Skating Union (ISU)recognised skating competition, in Salzburg, Austria, on 20 January.

It will then contest the Hevelius

Cup in Gdañsk, Poland, a week later.

The squad, which trains at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium in Warners Bay, consists of nine young skaters from across the Hunter Region, some of whom boast medals at state and national events.

Formed in 2010, it contests the mixed division and ranges in age

from 11 to 22. The team became the reigning NSW state champions in 2018 and placed fifth at the national championships, where only four points separated the top five sides.

Following the nationals, Ice Skating Australia announced the team had qualified for the international competitions.

“This is an amazing opportunity for a regional synchronised ice skating team to not only represent our country, but also our local area and the Hunter Ice Skating Club,” team manager, Terri Probert, said.

“The team is training hard and we are busy making travel arrangements for our upcoming tour.”

The squad includes: Chantelle Finlay, Samantha Hall, Caleb Jacobs, Ava Lantz, Gemma Page, Ashley Probert, Rosina Steller, Angelique Wilson, captain and current intermediate ladies national champion Amelia Stocker, and coach Lara Matskel.

Grilled salmon with blueberry balsamic sauce 1 tsp olive oil 2 x 150g salmon fillet, skin on 1 Tbsp butter, melted

1 tsp brown sugar 1/2 tsp paprika 1/4 cup (60ml) balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup (80g) blueberries 1 Tbsp maple syrup 1 Tbsp butter 4 cups (500g) green beans 1/2 tsp salt Olive oil

Packed with antioxidants, blueberries are high in nutrients and low in calories. Often labelled a superfood, blueberries are versatile and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes – the choice is yours!

Paleo choc blueberry cake Serves: 10-12 For the base 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut 1 cup raw walnuts ¼ raw cacao powder 2 Tbsp coconut oil

Line the base of a 20cm spring form cake tin with baking paper and grease the edges with a little coconut oil.

Start with the base. In a food processor, place the walnuts, coconut and raw cacao powder. Whiz these ingredients until a fine meal forms.

Add the coconut oil and raw honey and whiz until it becomes a choc butter.

Once it’s all combined, press the base in to the cake tin, making sure you press it out evenly, covering the entire base. Place in to the freezer.

Now for the filling. Drain and rinse the cashews and place them in to the food processor along with the coconut milk, blueberries, coconut oil, raw honey and vanilla extract.

Whiz until completely smooth, this will take around 5 minutes.

1 Tbsp raw honey (or rice malt syrup)

Take the base out of the freezer and pour the filling on top of the base.

For the filling 2 cups raw cashews (soaked overnight)

Shake the tin to even out the top and place the cake in to the freezer for around 1 ½ hours or until set.

1 cup coconut milk

Take the cake out of the freezer and let sit for 10 minutes.

1 cup blueberries (fresh or thawed frozen)

Meanwhile, time for the toppings! You’ll need to make a ½ batch of paleo chocolate the place the crushed cashews, coconut sugar and ghee in a medium saucepan on medium heat.

1/3 cup coconut oil 1 Tbsp raw honey 1 tsp 100% vanilla extract For the topping 1 cup fresh blueberries ¾ cup raw cashews crushed 1 Tbsp coconut sugar 1 Tbsp ghee or coconut oil ½ a batch of paleo chocolate

1/2 cup pomegranate seeds Fresh dill, chopped Preheat oven to 180°C. Prepare a tray with baking paper.

Drizzle 1 teaspoon olive oil into a non-stick pan over a high heat. Place fish in, skin down. Cook for approx. 2-3min until crisp.

Remove from pan and place skin side down onto prepared tray. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon melted butter and sprinkle with brown sugar and paprika.

Place the salmon in the oven for 15 minutes for medium.

In the meantime, bring a medium sized saucepan to the boil. Using a slotted spoon carefully lower in the beans and boil for 2 minutes before removing and immersing in a bowl of ice water.

Drain then finely julienne the green beans. Place in a mixing bowl and season with salt, olive oil, pomegranate seeds and dill. Remove fish from oven and set aside. Meanwhile, place a small saucepan over a medium heat. Add the balsamic vinegar and cook for 5 minutes or until reduced by a third, then add the blueberries and maple syrup.

Cook for another minute, stir in the tablespoon of butter and serve over salmon.

Stir continuously until the ghee is melted and the cashews have caramelised. Transfer these onto a plate and allow to cool. Rub the outside of the cake tin with a hot cloth and release the spring form slowly (you may need to run a knife around the edge).

Top the cake with fresh blueberries, caramelised cashews and drizzle with paleo chocolate. Cut in to slices with a hot knife and store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

On love, friendships and the joy of ageing Newcastle Theatre Company’s latest play, Quartet, challenges perceptions about age, status and identity.

While some might be familiar with the 2012 film by the same name, directed by Dustin Hoffman and starring Billy Connolly, NTC president and actress Claire Williams says the play is a little

different – in a good way.

“It has some universal themes; things we’re all concerned about – work and love and friendships,” she says.

The gentle comedy follows the story of four retired opera singers who live together in a retirement home in Kent, United Kingdom.

Everything changes when the fourth resident, Jean Horton (played

not as easily grasped by audiences as a traditional band, in which the members stay the same.

McHugh is The Beautiful Girls – a solo project supported by a network of artists he calls one big family.

The result? An ever-changing line-up that evolves with McHugh’s signature sound and plays to each artist’s strengths.

Sometimes, The Beautiful Girls will play as a three-piece; other times there will be six or seven artists on stage.

“We went with the band angle for 10 years, but then the press started using old band photos and, because the line-up was always changing, it got confusing,” McHugh tells Newcastle Weekly.

“Playing as a musical collective has been the easiest and best thing [for my music], but the hard part is trying to explain that to the world.”

McHugh founded The Beautiful Girls in 2001, born of

a love for hip-hop, reggae and punk rock music, reminiscent of his childhood spent surfing and skating.

Over the years, the collective has produced such hits as I Thought About You, La Mar and Periscopes.

The latest single, Beautiful World, is at the heart of the collective’s cruisey 2018/19 summer tour, which makes its way to The Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle on Sunday 20 January.

Joining McHugh is long-time bass player Paulie B and former Xavier Rudd drummer Bobby Alu. McHugh says the audience can expect a unique performance of all the songs they know and love, with the lyrics providing only a framework, and the tempo open to interpretation, meaning no two gigs are the same.

She wrote and illustrated a book called Pigs in the Crops, in which local farmers share a story about their brush with feral pigs, explaining why they have such tall, strong fences.

Maggie’s class, Year 4/5I, participated in the federal government-funded City Livin’ Ferals Enviro-Stories program, through which students learned about the impact of feral animals such as pigs, cats, deer, rabbits, dogs and foxes.

After completing a workshop, students were equipped with the tools to research, write and illustrate a story about feral animals.

Healthy summer hacks

Summer is the perfect time to catch up and celebrate the holiday season with friends, family, food and fun.

However, often a change in season can derail health and fitness goals without even realising. NW caught up with Tiffiny Hall, founder of online health and fitness program TIFFXO.com, with her top tips to stay happy and healthy this summer.

Eat the rainbow

Those delicious seasonal veggies that roll around once a year make them so much more appealing! Fill up with fresh summer fruit and veg and get creative in the kitchen by adding stone fruits to yoghurt, berries to salads (blueberries and kale is a delish combo) and mangoes to smoothies!

Ditch the bun Summer means plenty of barbecues with family and friends so if you want to stay healthy at the soiree, my number one tip is to ditch the white bun. This means you can enjoy yourself and eat more of the meat, seafood and salads without filling up on bread.

Exercise outside When the sun is shining, don’t feel stuck inside a gym. Instead, take your sweat sesh outside! I design all of my workouts on TIFFXO to be done anywhere, anytime. You don’t even need equipment. Take me to your garden, local park or even the beach.

Zen out in the garden Because a healthy summer isn’t just about your physical health, your mental health is just as important. Take advantage of the warmer weather and enjoy a little “me time” outside (you won’t want to meditate under a tree when it’s raining in Jully)

Stay hydrated No doubt you’ve heard it a million times – stay hydrated in summer! But with good reason – drinking enough water is critical for total body health. It

You know UV rays are bad for you, but what you may not realise (or have experienced without thinking about it) is that excess sun exposure can also make you lose your healthy glow. This is because the sun dries your skin of its moisture, making it appear dry and prematurely wrinkled.

Take it slow What do I do if all I want to do is eat a packet of crisps and sit by the pool all day? I do just that! Maintaining a six-pack over summer is pointless if it’s going to make you unhappy and distract you from time with family and friends. So enjoy taking time to relax occasionally without feeling bad about it. Plus, giving your body a break helps it rebuild muscle and recharge after a busy period. Sometimes doing nothing is exactly what the doctor ordered!

Lying on your back with dumbbell in your right hand, raise your arm to 90 degrees and then come up into a sit position while leaving your arm raised. Kick your left leg up to meet your weighted arm and then return to start position. Come back into a sit up with your right arm raised and then come down to the left foot flat on ground (don’t kick on this one). Repeat with left arm and right leg.

Push ups (this applies to all kinds of push ups) Start at toe pushups, drop your knees, tuck your pelvis under and keep going.

Star jumps Step it out instead of jumping. Take the impact out and still work your core.

Kicking (this applies to all kinds of kicks) This is an easy modification – just take the extension of the kick out of it.

Front kick turns into a knee crunch.

Roundhouse transforms into chamber and hold.

Sidekick turns into chamber crunch and hold.

Kick throughs If you can’t touch your toes, just reach as close to your toe as possible. Form is more important than flexibility.

Hollow hold flies Start on your back, holding your dumbbells straight over your chest.

Keep legs straight, raise them to a 45-degree angle and keep them there.

Engage your core and raise shoulders slightly, lower the dumbbell down to your sides, and then raise back over your chest.

Kick throughs Begin in plank position. Rotate your body to the left and kick your left leg all the way through. Leave your left hand on the ground and touch your toe with your right hand. Bring your hand and foot back to plank and repeat on the opposite side.

Yearly overview: January – June January Living Christmas trees will need a new home outside; gradually ease them into a sunny position. Give them a good drink of Flourish and a slowrelease fertiliser.

Straggly annuals such as petunias can be dug out and the bed fertilised, ready to re-plant.

Take care when pruning during the heat as new growth may get burnt.

February Check lawns for brown patches as army grub is damaging lawns. Apply a product, all over the lawn, not just on brown patches, as the grubs will be eating the roots of the green areas.

Reapply in ten days’ time to catch the hatching cycle – do this late in the afternoon on a mown lawn.

Houseplants should be checked for mealy bug, which can be described as a white, fluffy insect. Control it with Malathon and White Oil. 38

Time to prune hydrangeas and geraniums when they finish flowering. Cut off the long stems of agapanthus when blooms have finished.

Gardenias, hibiscus and murraya that bear yellow leaves need an application of cow manure if groundgrown.

Roses need a summer prune. Cut off one-third of growth, fertilise with poultry manure, then rose food.

March Citrus should be fertilised this month.

Jason grew up in Newcastle and moved away in his early 20s for 15 years or so, and, like most people, returned home. He has worked with Lifeline for almost five years. His role, as Manager Retail Operation, offers the opportunity to indulge in his two life passions: recycled fashion and growing Lifeline’s services to protect our young people. Growing up in Newcastle in the 70s and 80s as a queer kid who loved fashion was not always a smooth ride. But he was lucky; he had a loving and supportive family. He was also surrounded by great mentors and friends. So, when Jason hears of young people struggling with their identity and contemplating self-harm, it makes him want to cry. He asked himself: “What can I do to connect with these young people, as I am not someone with the skills of a counsellor?” He is, however, someone who can and has made it his mission to provide cool spaces that are safe and inclusive for young people and everyone else, to shop and grab great recycled clothing, furniture and thousands of other things cheaply.
