This week... From the editor Welcome back, readers. I hope you all had a safe and joyous break over the Christmas/New Year period. While I'm not big on New Year's resolutions (my willpower bends easily), I do like to consider what I'd like to achieve in the next 12 months at the beginning of a fresh year. I am goal-driven, so this seems to come naturally to me, however, this year (after a mammoth 2018 and 2017), my focus is on 'just this': just this moment, and nothing else. I've hit so many milestones in the past two years – including becoming Newcastle Weekly's editor, graduating from university, buying my fi rst home and, not long after, welcoming a puppy – that I feel as if I need to slow down and enjoy it all. So, 2019, for me, will be all about appreciating what I already have, rather than anticipating what's to come. Our first edition of the year features healthy recipes in Taste (p22), including our cover star, the ultimate fruit platter, plus an inspiring story about a mumof-three's weightloss journey, on p27.

Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation chief executive Michelle McLaughlin, Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes, Mayfield West Demonstration School assistant principal Dean Morrison with students, councillor Peta Winney-Baartz, chief inspector Phil Brooks and councillor Matthew Byrne at Dixon Park Beach.

Keep a look out for kids School holidays are a time for family and friends to focus on socialising, travel and time together. However, it also means maintaining greater vigilance when walking near, or driving on, the Hunter’s busy roads. That’s the message local councils

are spreading this summer as part of a holiday road safety and awareness campaign targeted at holidaymakers and the local community. The ‘Holiday Time: Slow Down, Kids Around’ campaign is the brainchild of Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation chief executive Michelle

McLaughlin, who tragically lost her four-year-old son, Tom, to a roadside accident on the Central Coast in 2014. Mrs McLaughlin now spends her days proactively pushing to prevent further tragedies from occurring on NSW roads. “The ‘Holiday Time: Slow Down, Kids Around’ campaign incorporates brightly-coloured billboard signage with simple messaging to instruct and remind drivers to slow down, and for children and families to remain alert and attentive,” Mrs McLaughlin said. “The boards are positioned in highly visible public spaces, such as beaches and parks, so that we can best maximise our road safety message. “Holiday destinations are most often a new and unfamiliar environment for children and their families, and it’s important that parents have a conversation with their children and go through how they’re expected to behave when

they’re in this new environment.” These conversations are already well and truly being had around the dinner table and in the classroom of 11-year-old Alice Bradley, a Year 5 student at Mayfield West Demonstration School. As part of her school’s PDHPE curriculum, students at Mayfield West Demonstration School learn the necessary skills, attitudes and behaviours needed to stay safe as pedestrians, passengers and wheelchair users. “Holidays are always the best time of the year, but when they come around we need to take extra care when crossing roads and watching for cars,” Alice said. “These lessons teach us to be extra cautious and careful.” Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and Port Stephens councils have also partnered with the foundation to support the campaign. news Traineeship opens eyes to options When students prepare to finish high school, they often come to a crossroad over their future career path. Some opt for university, while others prefer hands-on careers and enrol in an apprenticeship or traineeship. Hunter Valley Training Company (HVTC) chief executive, Sharon Smith, says there is a public perception, particularly among parents, that students must pick only one option. “Contrary to this belief, VET [Vocational Education and Training] and university pathways can complement each other,” she says. “[Last month] Year 12 students across NSW received their HSC marks and ATAR scores. “I hope these students are aware of all the options available to them. “I also hope parents realise that choosing a VET career doesn’t mean their child can’t pursue a university degree in the future. “There tends to be a lot of competition between these two pathways, but many apprentice and trainee grads go on to attend university to build on their existing qualifications.”

This has been the case for HVTC trainees Alex McIntosh and Emma Williams, who are both set to begin their studies at the University of Newcastle in March after completing a Certificate III Allied Health Assistance Traineeship in December. Alex and Emma were introduced to Early Links Inclusion Support Service, where they received a taste of different health professions, such as occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology and physiotherapy. Throughout their traineeships, the duo accompanied therapists to in-home and school visits to help children improve their social and developmental skills. They also had the opportunity to work on the Big Yellow Bus – a mobile playground with slides, fun play activities and craft sessions to encourage skill development. The bus travels to Cessnock, Singleton and Muswellbrook every week, targeting children between the ages of three and five who are about to start primary school. Prior to the traineeship, Alex was planning to study nursing at university but decided to pursue

psychology instead. “I knew I wanted to work in health, I just wasn’t sure what area,” he said. “The traineeship has opened my eyes to some of the different sectors available. “I’ve really enjoyed working with the kids and helping address some of their behavioural issues. “It has been interesting to learn how support strategies differ from one child to the next. “The traineeship definitely helped sway my decision. news Parking discount

Beloved baths open Support for elderly

Newcastle council has slashed the hourly cost of on-street parking for users of its pay-by-phone parking app, in preparation for Australian-first technology that guides drivers to vacant spaces. The discount automatically applies to the EasyPark app, which allows drivers to pay only for the time they use and remotely top-up payments after receiving SMS notifications 15 minutes before their meter expires. The council’s chief executive, Jeremy Bath, said the discount was part of a six-month trial to reward drivers who used the app. “With light rail construction behind us and the city set for an exciting 2019, we know that parking ease is important to many people who shop in the CBD,” he said. “That’s why we’re incentivising use of the app to make parking cheaper and easier. “By July [2019], the app will have the ability to point out to drivers the most likely place to find a park, based on sophisticated parking algorithms.” In other parking changes, the trial of a morning and afternoon rate on all 1P and 2P parking meters will finish at the end of December.

Lake Macquarie’s largest swimming baths have reopened after an $850,000 revamp. The much-anticipated Belmont Baths features a netted swimming area, 70 metres long and 45 metres wide, replacing the former baths damaged beyond repair during the April 2015 Superstorm. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser officially opened the new facility at a celebration just before Christmas. “This is the perfect time of year for Belmont Baths to reopen,” Cr Fraser said. “With lake water quality the best it has been for decades, these baths will provide a place for the community to enjoy one of our great natural assets.” In April 2017, Lake Macquarie council voted to rebuild the baths and, earlier this year, the state government provided $432,422 towards the upgrade. The next stage of work, due to begin early this year, will include the construction of a new amenities block with accessible change room and aquatic wheelchair storage, as well as foreshore landscaping.

The state government has introduced an independent Ageing and Disability Commissioner to investigate and stamp out abuse in the Hunter Region and across NSW. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said the commissioner would target those who abuse older people and adults with a disability in both home and community environments. “It’s abhorrent there are people who abuse and take advantage of vulnerable members of our community,” he said. “Older people, adults with a disability and their loved ones in the Hunter will be empowered by the new Ageing and Disability Commissioner.” The commissioner will start on 1 July. Some of the key functions under the role are set to include: receiving and investigating allegations of abuse, neglect and exploitation; providing support to vulnerable adults and their families following an investigation; and reporting and making recommendations to the government on systemic issues impacting adults who are at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation.

news Missing ingredient to treat schizophrenia New research has uncovered that a subgroup of people with schizophrenia may benefit from vitamin A treatment, found in foods such as salmon, cheddar cheese and liver. The investigation was led by professor Murray Cairns, from the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). “We investigated common genetic variation associated with schizophrenia and observed changes in 22 genes involved with the metabolism and function of vitamin A, which is part of the retinoid system,” professor Cairns said. “Vitamin A is responsible for good health and is essential for neural development, connectivity and plasticity. “Our findings suggest that up to a third of people with schizophrenia have an above-average risk for retinoid system dysfunction. “By identifying people at excess risk with a simple and cheap saliva test, we could immediately begin to improve their symptoms by treating them in a more targeted way through dietary interventions and clinically available pharmaceuticals that regulate the system.”

While previous evidence supports the link between retinoids and schizophrenia, these findings claim to be the first to identify a genetic burden in the retinoid signalling pathway that changes their function in people with the disorder. Professor Cairns said, while it was not entirely clear what initiated schizophrenia, 80% of the risk appeared to be inherited, with the remainder caused by environmental factors such as infection in utero and psychosocial reasons, including neglect and traumatic experiences. Psychosis, withdrawal, memory problems and a loss of motivation are just some of the symptoms of the complex mental health disorder that about 1% of Australians are likely to develop throughout their lifetime. “The condition and its genetic determinants also varies from one person to another, but there are three main groups of symptoms – positive, negative and cognitive,” professor Cairns said. “A substantial proportion of the people diagnosed with schizophrenia have a severe cognitive deficit that impacts their memory and ability to work and relate to people.

University of Newcastle professor Murray Cairns.

“With no cure available and most people living with the disorder throughout their life, these findings reveal promising potential for the use of precision medication to help better manage the symptoms of schizophrenia.” The study used data from 500 participants involved with the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank, with clinical trials a necessary next step to measure and compare the effect of vitamin A dietary and related pharmaceutical interventions. The research was carried out in partnership with the University of New South Wales, Neuroscience Research Australia and Monash University.

Sailing into unique fundraiser The most unique sailing event on Lake Macquarie, the Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta, returns for its 13th year this February in a quest to raise funds for cancer patients in the Hunter. About 80 boats are expected to take part and proceeds from the event fund the Home Help Program, overseen by Cancer Council NSW, which provides domestic support to cancer patients in need of assistance around the home. The Regatta is organised and hosted by the Royal Motor Yacht Club (RMYC) in Toronto. It features a variety of events, including a 24-Hour Endurance race that will test the strength and stamina of some of the most experienced sailors from both Lake Macquarie and other ports in the state. RMYC Vice Commodore, Mel Steiner, said, while it was a

challenging event, all of the crews looked forward to the test. “I recall one crew member – a lady, describing it as like giving birth, but you come back for more,” he said. “The Regatta has become a hugely popular event on the sailing calendar but it’s also a great spectacle for those watching from the shore.” In addition to the 24-Hour Endurance Race, the Regatta will feature specially designed courses to cater for different types of vessels. Other events include a Classic One Lap Dash, a 12-Hour Challenge race, and a shorter course. Heaven Can Wait was the brainchild of Shaun Lewicki – a Lake Macquarie resident, keen sailor and cancer survivor. He said the initial goal was to raise funds for cancer research, particularly men’s cancers, but

also promote sailing and Lake Macquarie. “Cancer Council NSW identified the worthiness of a Home Help Program in the Hunter so, for the fifth consecutive year, the event will directly fund this program,” he said. “The program provides domestic assistance to both recovering and terminal cancer patients who, because of their illness, are unable to perform many

of the home duties they would normally do.” The 2018 edition set a new fundraising record, with $44,000 raised for the worthy cause. This year’s Regatta will kick off with a charity dinner on 22 February at the RMYC. The event then takes place from 23 to 24 February as part of Lakefest, a two-week celebration of aquatic activity on Lake Macquarie, which starts on 16 February.

What’s happening in Newcastle city centre? Major light rail construction is now complete and minor works continue in the city centre. This includes finishing work at light rail stops and around the light rail track, and footpath upgrades and landscaping. Work also continues on important upgrades to key intersections across the city centre that will help to improve traffic flow and safety for road users. When travelling in and around the city centre be aware that some temporary traffic changes are in place, and there is now a 40km/h speed limit for all vehicles on Hunter and Scott streets between Worth Place and Telford Street. Swing king to hit region Former Australian swing king Terry Alderman will visit Newcastle for a cricket coaching clinic this month. Alderman played a total of 41 Tests for Australia, taking 170 wickets, with his best bowling figures being 6/47. He began his first-class career in 1974 with Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield and shot to international prominence when he was selected in the national team to tour England in 1981. Alderman will be joined by another former Australian representative, Len Pascoe, at the annual Shaun Brown’s Cricket Coaching clinic. Pascoe snared 64 Test wickets during his career, with best bowling figures of 5/59 against England. The camp will take place at Ford

Oval, New Lambton, on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 January, from 9am to 3pm. Shaun Brown said the clinics provided an excellent learning experience for enthusiastic cricketers between the ages of seven and 16. “Our program covers all facets of cricket, Twenty20, One Day, and Test formats,” he said. “[It’s] all aimed at improving participants’ skills, knowledge and

enjoyment of the game.” Brown believed the regional camps, which first started 32 years ago, had helped thousands of cricketers to improve all aspects of their game. “It’s fantastic to be able to involve former Test stars in areas that don’t normally get that exposure,” he said. The clinic features the use of video analysis, a comprehensive program, and written reports.

time out Trevor Dickinson’s Beautiful bus shelters of Canberra exhibition at CMAG features his illustrations of 52 of the iconic concrete shelters made from Clem Cummings’ 1974 design. Photo: RLDI

Quintessential Canberriana captured It’s an iconic piece of the Canberra streetscape that many natives take for granted, but it truly inspired Newcastle artist Trevor Dickinson when he fi rst visited the capital around six years ago.

That inspiration is, of course, the ACT’s quirky round concrete bus shelters, designed in 1974 by Clem Cummings. Dickinson said his project of illustrating the bus shelters

AWARD-WINNING INTERNATIONAL CLAIRVOYANT

FRANCIS BEVAN

started when he was based in Canberra for an artistin-residence program at the Megalo Print Studio and Gallery in Kingston. “You can pretty well go to any suburb in Canberra and you’ll fi nd one; it’s like a symbol … some cities have got them, and in Australia, I haven’t found them, aside from this,” he said. After doing a few one-off sketches of the shelters for tea towels, coasters and prints that proved exceedingly popular, Dickinson then decided to dedicate a whole series to them. Setting out with the intention of photographing all 484 shelters that stood in the ACT, he was assisted by Transport Canberra, which provided the location of each bus stop. While accomplishing that, Dickinson illustrated 52 in his whimsical yet grounded style for a deck of cards. “The more I saw them, under

traffic lights or at night, they took on a completely different light and kept changing how they’d look,” he said. He said a lot of what he’d done in each picture was about what surrounded the shelter, and its familiarity to local residents. “It’s the context of where they are, the weather, the light and the time of day so you’ve got some that feel like a frosty morning and others that are a sunny evening. “They’re also really good because they resonate with people; anyone who’s grown up in Canberra has sat in one.” An exhibition of Dickinson’s illustrations, and some other related material, called Beautiful bus shelters of Canberra, is on show at the Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG) in the City, until 27 January. Top tips for pool safety

Water safety experts are reminding pool owners to carry out safety checks to prevent accidents and drownings this summer. Kids Alive – Do the Five founder, Laurie Lawrence, said 33 Australians lost their lives in swimming pool drowning incidents last year, so it was vital to ensure they were safe zones. “Kids, in particular, are drawn to the water like magnets, which is why it is so important to make sure your pool fences and gates are in good, working order and there is nothing that a child could climb on,” Laurie said. “It’s also vital that kids are always supervised when they are in the pool and that pool owners know how to perform CPR in the case of an emergency.”

Kids Alive – Do the Five founder, Laurie Lawrence.

Here are seven tips for pool safety and maintenance: 1. Ensure the pool environment is safe. Maintain your pool fence and gate and display a compliant CPR chart. 2. Teach children to swim. Underfives are the most at-risk around pools during summer, so parents need to ensure their children receive swimming lessons to gain more confidence in the water. 3. Know how to save a life. A child is four times more likely to survive if given CPR. 4. Check pool equipment to ensure it is running properly. Check equipment for problems

and don’t be afraid to upgrade – it could save you money in the long run. 5. Ensure the pH level is healthy. It should be between 7.2 and 7.6. 6. Chlorinate the pool to disinfect all microorganisms. Chlorine levels should be between 2-3 PPM to disinfect all microorganisms. 7. Vacuum and skim the pool regularly and organise professional check-ups. Cleaning your pool removes debris that allows algae to thrive and a regular pool maintenance schedule will ensure healthy, clean, clear pool water all year round.

Mums struggle with post-baby body image

Then and now: Chloe Cox has dropped 40 kilograms on her weight-loss journey.

the look Supermum does it for her kids Bonnells Bay mother-of-three Chloe Cox has started the new year feeling more confident than ever in her own skin. She’s dropped a whopping 40 kilograms since February 2016, but she’s not stopping there. “I’m smaller than I was as a teenager,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “I’ve never had an end goal in mind or a number I wanted to reach on the scales; I’m just focusing on being the happiest version of me I can be.” Ms Cox’s fi rst two pregnancies were classified as “complicated” and high-risk. After a bout of postnatal depression, she decided to take control of the direction in which her life was heading. “I saw a photo [of herself pregnant] and I’d had enough,”

she says. “I signed up [to parenting health site The Healthy Mummy] that night.” With proper guidance, Ms Cox was able to stick to her resolution, once and for all. Her third pregnancy was the healthiest; low-risk and complication free, simply by changing her diet and exercising. And, just before Christmas, Ms Cox had the celebration she deserved, alongside five other women who were all winners in The Healthy Mummy’s Weight Loss Mums of the Year competition. The women, who shed almost 200 kilograms between them, were flown to Sydney and treated to a once-in-a-lifetime makeover and a cocktail party, where they flaunted their new looks on the catwalk.

When asked what her one piece of advice was for Newcastle Weekly readers, Ms Cox said: “The best thing is not to look at the big picture: take it day by day. And, if you eat something bad, that’s fi ne; you can always make a better choice next time.” - Georgia Osland

Australian mums are struggling with post-baby body image more than ever, with research showing that women continue to view their bodies in a negative way. Six in 10 Australian women consider themselves overweight, and 50% say they feel pressure to look a certain way because of their gender. The Butterfly Foundation and women’s health organisation, Jean Hailes for Women’s Health, conducted separate research projects that both confi rmed the pressure women felt when it came to body image. By contrast, just 25% of men feel a similar pressure, according to the survey conducted. Body image and gender stereotyping were flagged as huge issues, still.

Bradley needs to forgive and forget; to learn to love his neighbour as himself. 2019 will be a great romantic year for him, filled with love and happiness if he doesn’t make himself the centre of attention. This is a year to discard anything useless, including worn-out habits, negative attitudes, dead-end relationships and material junk; a year for friendships and to take stock of his life. He’s in the process of completing a cycle that began nine years ago; it’s time to review that period quietly.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

From 2 January it is full steam ahead as your ruling planet Mars enters your sign and remains there until 14 February. You’ll be able to tackle new beginnings with a growing confidence in yourself. The New Moon on the 6th warns you to take extra care whilst driving.

The New Moon on the 6th is a good time to declutter your home and to fall into a sensible routine with work; you could find yourself following a strict set of rules. You might travel overseas or investigate a part of the world you’ve always fancied knowing better.

Partnerships and relationships are going to be of paramount importance to you this year. New Moon on the 6th is the ideal time to renovate, build, move or buy a new home. Your interior decorator skills will certainly be on display for all to see.

Your home circumstances will play a major part in your life in 2019, which may mean a move of house, building work to be done, decorating or buying new furnishings. The New Moon on the 6th in your own sign ushers in a fresh new start to your life.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG The New Moon on the 6th falls in your work house ushering in a fresh start at your place of employment and improvements on the health front. Uranus in your 10th house indicates an unexpected breakthrough with your career and a move into a position that you’ve always dreamed of.

You’ll be focused on your career or business and find either your job becomes more interesting or you begin to do something new and highly satisfying. The New Moon on the 6th is the ideal time to start work on a creative project or something that involves writing or public speaking.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

With Mars in your 12th house until 14 February there will be a strong element of fantasy in your love life. Half-buried memories will come back to haunt you and you could find yourself facing up to old fears. The 6 January New Moon warns you against being closed minded in foreign situations.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

The New Moon on the 6th indicates your boss or the company you are working for may start to do really well and will pass on bonuses to you; it’s also a good time apply for a loan. You will make achievements as part of a group or a team.

2019 is a year when you will reach out and make the changes which will set the pattern of your life for many years to come. The New Moon on the 6th is the ideal time for dealing with children and young people or for embarking on creative projects.

During the year ahead, you’ll be dealing with children and young people or enjoying a more youthful attitude, possibly joining in sporting and youthful pastimes. The New Moon on the 6th indicates that a new source of income is possible or you may start a business of your own.

The coming year is a time of consolidation in all things and of steady and controlled growth. The New Moon on the 6th indicates that you may become involved with a sports team or people who are interested in artistic pursuits, or some kind of intellectual grouping.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

This will be a busy and potentially restless year for you; a year for mental exploration and you could take evening classes at your local college. The New Moon on the 6th indicates you will enjoy making contact with a black sheep relative the rest of the family ignores.

A-LEAGUE The Newcastle Jets. I love kicking back at a game and taking time out to be me.

My favourite things Liann Taffe

WALK A MILE KOORI STYLE CO-FOUNDER

Liann Taffe started to see a few Aboriginal boys in night clubs who weren’t showing women the same respect as they would at a Corroboree. She asked them how they would feel if their mum was treated the way they, and some of the music artists they were into, discussed girls. They started to have a yarn about respect and then domestic violence. “I got them to agree to walk a mile in women’s shoes,” Liann said. The boys said they would wear high, sparkly red shoes and walk a mile to say ‘no more violence to women’. So, Liann and her fellow female workers at Warlga Ngurra Women’s Refuge, got together and created Walk a Mile Koori Style. The first year’s event in 2013 was washed out. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, becoming a community day where people from all cultures and backgrounds come together as one to say no to violence against women. Nearly 1,000 men walked at this year’s event. An Aboriginal woman from the Kamilaroi Nation, Liann is a caseworker at the refuge. She came back to Newcastle in 2007 to start a new life. Liann wanted to make a difference in her children’s lives and let them know that there is so much more to life than struggle. She loves living on the coast where she says there is much opportunity. 38

SALT WATER I was born and raised in western NSW but I have a love and respect for the ocean. It’s my healing place where I find peace, even on a busy day.

NRL The mighty Panthers. I love going to Penrith to watch a game. One of two places I can scream and yell (and swear… lol).

WALK A MILE KOORI STYLE This annual event in November is about men saying ‘no’ to violence against women. The men who take part make me proud to call myself a Novocastrian. The event gets bigger and bigger but the message stays the same. The people we work with to make the event happen are spectacular.
