This week...

I’ve spent the past week getting to ‘know thy neighbour’. Having some time away from the news desk to settle into my first home has been rejuvenating. I’m happy to report the neighbours are warm and friendly and the local takeaway joint is an absolute ripper. Many mid-week meals to be had from there. In true Georgia fashion, after nonstop unpacking, arranging, cleaning and flat-pack assembling, I’d left myself with one day to relax. So, I decided to spend the day – a Tuesday (known here as production day), no less – doing only things I enjoyed. For me, this looked like an earlymorning workout, followed by a solitary coffee whilst I read the paper (and the Weekly) from front to back in peace; a bubble bath; a load of washing (yes, if you hadn’t already guessed it, a clean house relaxes me); a homecooked meal (the best I can afford as a new mortgagor); some trashy TV; and an afternoon nanna nap. If only I had spent all my days off like this! A huge thankyou to my 2IC, Ben, and our casual, Mel, for filling in on my behalf while I indulged in such simple pleasures. - Georgia Osland

news Wave of support for unique fundraiser Courtney Bower joined the fight against breast cancer after her mother’s diagnosis. “Seeing what she went through inspired me to do my bit to help [create] a future where, hopefully, mums and daughters don’t have to go through that,” she says. In 2015, Ms Bower set up a unique charity event called Tubes4Boobs, in which participants don bras and hit the surf for a good cause. It has raised more than $57,000 to date for the Cancer Council Hunter’s Financial Assistance Program. The program supports families going through cancer by helping out with costs such as treatments, household expenses, car registration, and rent. “The first year [of Tubes4Boobs], I had a goal to raise $10,000, but we managed to double that,” Ms Bower says. “Breast cancer is something that’s close to everybody; one in eight women are diagnosed with [the illness] at some point in their life, so it’s awesome that people are getting behind this.” Ms Bower has called for more registrations

amid Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year’s edition will take place at Bar Beach from 8am on Saturday 17 November. Cancer Council NSW representative, Elissa Mead, says fundraisers like Tubes4Boobs have made a massive difference. “Every day in Australia, 60 women are diagnosed with breast or a gynaecological cancer – these women are our mothers, our grandmas, daughters, sisters, and friends,” she says. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer increased from 72% in 1982-1987 to 90% in 2017. From 1982-1987 to 2006-2010, gynaecological cancer survival rates, including ovarian and uterine cancers, also rose by 11% and 7% respectively. “This increase in survival rates for breast and gynaecological cancers is thanks to advancements in early detection and treatment due to research and prevention programs,” Ms Mead adds.

news City revitalisation presents “double-edged sword” Newcastle’s infrastructure transformation presents potential risks for Novocastrians who live in the margins, the head of a major social service believes. Mission Australia chief executive James Toomey visited Newcastle last week to discuss local concerns and encourage the community to join the sector’s Everybody’s Home campaign. The campaign calls for the implementation of a national homelessness strategy, with the aim to end homelessness by 2030 by addressing driving forces such as poverty, family violence and housing affordability. More than 116,000 Australians are classified as homeless, according to 2016 census figures. The figure has increased by 14% since 2011.

As well as rough sleepers, people living in temporary, inadequate or overcrowded accommodation are deemed to be homeless. “It is an international embarrassment caused by the long-term absence of a national coordinated plan and the lack of a serious commitment to building new social and affordable homes,” Mr Toomey said. “We cannot afford to ignore this situation any longer.” In Newcastle, 802 people were recorded as being homeless on census night. Mr Toomey said Newcastle’s revitalisation could create a chasm between existing residents and those looking to move to the city. “It’s a double-edged sword [because] people love to live in a

vibrant place, but it can come with challenges for people who are living on the fringes,” he said. “It is changing quite quickly in terms of the development with the rail network and breathing new life into Newcastle, but some of the social problems like affordability and reliability are still there. “It has the potential to make rental accommodation more expensive.” Additionally, the influx of home buyers who have been priced out of

the major cities has created extra pressure in the local market. “There’s a lot of focus on having affordability in the major east coast cities,” Mr Toomey said. “People are mesmerised by Sydney and Melbourne house prices, but no one is talking about those regions that are experiencing that knock-on effect.” Visit everybodyshome.com.au for more information. - Melissah Comber

news Cessnock council seeks funds for mountain bike park, trails Cessnock council has asked for $4 million from the state government to develop a mountain bike park. The park, dubbed ‘The Precinct’, would be developed on a 385-hectare Crown Land site north of Kearsley, between Duffie Drive and Neath Road, with plans to feature mountain bike tracks and form part of a network of trails connecting Newcastle to the Pokolbin wine district. It also has scope to include cross country and orienteering activities, native regeneration groups and Aboriginal history talks. The idea was first floated earlier this year after a low-level criminal network was found to be utilising a shanty village that had been erected in the area. The group was discovered to have been mounting regular night-time raids to steal property and vehicles,

then retreating to the illegally-erected structures. Police dismantled the base and Crown Lands erected exclusion barriers. Discussion between the two bodies turned to how to use the land for public benefit, while addressing illegal dirt bike riding through public streets and antisocial behaviour. “This project is a prime example of turning a negative situation into something really positive for our community and everyone involved should be very proud,” Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said. “It has been fantastic to see everyone working together on this and I truly hope we get a positive outcome out of the funding application.” The funds have been applied for under the NSW Government’s Regional Communities Development Fund.

Walk against slavery Novocastrians will embark on a beach walk with a difference next weekend to raise funds and awareness about human trafficking. On Saturday 20 October, tens of thousands of people around the world will take part in the Walk for Freedom, wearing black shirts and moving in single-file in an effort to eliminate modern-day slavery. The Newcastle walk will travel along Bathers Way, from Bar Beach to Merewether. The walks are being operated by A21, a global antihuman trafficking organisation. “We are convinced that if we do this together, if we keep showing up, if we continue to be tenacious, if we continue to turn up with strength, numbers and courage, then we can see slavery eradicated in our lifetime,” A21 founder, Christine Caine, said. In 2016, the United Nations estimated that 25 million people were in forced labour. Amongst other industries, slaves can be trafficked to work in manufacturing, agriculture and fishing. news Ceremony to celebrate time capsule’s unearthing Australia’s only known World War I time capsule has been unearthed at Lambton Park. Archaeologists, volunteers and a mason worked tirelessly to safely remove the nationally significant object from beneath the park’s memorial gates. On 19 October 1918, a foundation stone was laid, with a glass bottle then buried below. Community historian and a member of the Lambton Residents Group, Robert Watson, said the time capsule’s removal proved to be an arduous task. “It was a nine-hour process of cutting, grinding, and chiselling; underneath the foundation stone was a solid block of concrete with the glass bottle inside, so we had to go rather gingerly,” he said.

“There was a rolled-up newspaper [in the bottle] that was quite damp and fragile, plus a coin. “We couldn’t read anything on it, but we can pretty much guarantee that it was a penny, and we could see another coin further down too. “[The bottle] smelt heavily of smoke, so it’s possible that the newspaper was dried over a fire or that smoke was seen as a preservative.” A special ceremony on Saturday 20 October will celebrate the time capsule’s unveiling on its centenary, before a replacement is buried. The new time capsule’s contents will include two history books on Lambton, a collection of Armistice commemorative coins, stamps, school photos and badges, a list of the current Newcastle councillors

Prior to the ceremony, a parade will embark from Lambton pool at 10am and head through the park on the way to the rotunda. Marchers are expected to include the Hunter School of the Performing Arts Marching Band, the Australian Army Band Newcastle, the City

of Newcastle RSL Pipe Band, Fort Scratchley Historical Society, local school student leaders, and Lambton residents. The event wraps up with a picnic and park activities from 11.30am. news Museum eyes potential game-changer It has stood dormant for years, but a passionate group will push to breathe life back into a heritage building in the heart of Maitland. Maitland Regional Museum volunteers, science and technology enthusiasts and local artists face a $2.5 million hurdle in their bid to restore the former Maitland Mercury site. Last month, the museum’s committee submitted a grant application to the Regional Cultural Fund, seeking funds to purchase and refurbish the High Street premises to create a cultural hub in the city centre. If successful, the museum would gain a permanent home, with plenty of room to accommodate other groups, such as the Maitland and District Historical Society and The Clothing Museum, in one central location. “What’s great about our business model is that it’s not just going to provide a home for a museum,” committee member Helen Hopcroft said. “It’s going to provide a home for the city’s other community, cultural and heritage groups, and the rear of the building on the ground floor

will have space for artists’ studios. “That will help keep artists and artists’ groups in the CBD and it will make a difference in the long-term for the city.” Having a permanent and large space will also enable the museum to book travelling exhibitions and provide access to science and technology programs, providing residents and visitors with an experience that can often only be found in Newcastle or Sydney. “We’ve had this amazing population growth, yet we don’t have the cultural infrastructure to meet the needs of the population now,” Ms Hopcroft said. “Places like museums really bring communities together, and they offer free or low-cost activities for families. “It’s really an essential part of the fabric of the community to have these kinds of institutions. “I think it’s a game-changer for Maitland.” It is hoped the outcome of the grant application will be known by the end of the year. - Melissah Comber

news Retail development tipped to create hundreds of jobs Belmont Bunnings is set to relocate to a $90 million Bennetts Green retail centre in what has been described as a boon for the area. The 30,000 square metre precinct will be developed in bushland between the Pacific Highway and Windale sportsfields by the Spotlight Group. It will also include two fast food outlets, a service station and the group’s two major brands, Spotlight and Anaconda. Stage one of the development has been approved by the Joint Regional Planning Panel and will feature Bunnings, the retail block that will house Anaconda, one fast food outlet and the utilities infrastructure works. Development applications for stages two and three have been lodged with Lake Macquarie council. This week’s announcement has been years in the making, with the land sold for $20.3 million in January 2016 to Hydrox Nominees – a landholding company for Masters Hardware. “Council initially owned the site and we sold it to Masters,” Lake Macquarie mayor Kay

Fraser said. “Unfortunately, they went belly-up so we’re pleased to see Spotlight Group come in and take over the site.” With approximately 800 metres of frontage to the Pacific Highway, Councillor Fraser said the development would complement the existing retail precinct in Bennetts Green. “It will tie in nicely, it gives people the opportunity to shop locally,” she said. “When we see a lot of residential [housing] go

in, people are looking for that type of business to open up here, so it will be a real boon for the area.” No date has been set for construction to begin. However, the process will generate more than 800 full-time equivalent jobs, while about 600 jobs will be created once complete. news Scheme risking market failure: Port Stephens MP Port Stephens disability advocates and NDIS participants voiced their concerns about the implementation of the scheme at a roundtable in Raymond Terrace this week. Hosted by Port Stephens MP and Acting Shadow Minister for Disability Services, Kate Washington, the roundtable comes as the NSW Parliament holds an inquiry into the rollout of the NDIS and its impact on local services. Hearings for the inquiry began last month and have so far heard from government and disability service representatives, caregivers, NDIS participants and people with disabilities who are not covered by the NDIS. Volunteers take action over graffiti Roll up your sleeves and pick up a paintbrush: Graffiti Removal Day is here again, and locals are being encouraged to get involved. The annual event sees dozens of volunteers across the region tackle graffiti hotspots in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland, drawing attention to the fight against vandalism and instilling pride of place. This year, 20 sites have been identified across the Hunter, including at Wallsend, Mayfield and Belmont. “By taking action in your street, your suburb, or your city, we can all love where we live by making sure our place is one to be proud of,” Graffiti Removal Day chairman,

The $2.4 million renewal of Beresfield’s town centre is now half-complete. The project requires the entire reconstruction of above and below ground infrastructure, with much of the underground component now fi nished. The work beneath the surface will enable the installation of new lighting and smart poles, which will provide free wifi in the area. Addison Street, Lawson Avenue and Beresford Avenue will benefit from the upgrades, including work on the road surface, drainage and footpaths to create a new public space. A 40km/h zone will produce a pedestrian-friendly precinct. The project is on-schedule and is expected to be completed in March 2019.

sport Parker up for prestigious award Newcastle paratriathlete Lauren Parker’s remarkable exploits have earned her a nomination for this year’s Sport Australia Hall of Fame The Don Award. The distinguished award, named after legendary cricketer Sir Donald Bradman, is based on athletes’ achievements and example over the past 12 months, as well as their ability to inspire the nation. The winner, along with the Hall of Famers and the 40th Legend of Australian Sport, will be celebrated at the 34th Induction and Awards Gala Dinner in Melbourne on Thursday 11 October (today). Parker said she was “absolutely blown away” to be nominated for The Don Award. “When I found out I was a nominee, I was so overwhelmed; it’s such a great honour to be nominated for such a prestigious award and alongside the past nominees,” she said. “It’s been a tough 20 months and I’ve achieved so much more than I ever thought possible, so I’m very proud for the past few months, especially. “To be mentioned in the same breath as Sir

Donald Bradman – the greatest batsman of all time – is definitely an honour and something I will always remember.” Parker will join a star-studded list of Australian sporting champions, including F1 star Daniel Ricciardo, Indianapolis 500 victor Will Power, Matilda’s international goalscoring machine Sam Kerr, record-breaking cricketer Ellyse Perry, Commonwealth Games gold-medallists Kurt Fearnley and Madison de Rozario, plus outgoing Kookaburras hockey captain Mark Knowles. For 29-year-old Parker, her story was always set to inspire the nation from the moment she relaunched her amazing new career. The former Ironman triathlete has been in a wheelchair since an horrific bike-riding accident near Raymond Terrace in April 2017. Parker was travelling at about 45 kilometres per hour when both of her tyres punctured, causing her to careen into a guardrail. She suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken scapula, broken pelvis, and a broken back, and was left with only a 1% chance of walking again.

However, in January, just nine months after the accident, Parker pushed and puffed her handcycle and racing wheelchair for 28 kilometres around the streets of Melbourne’s St Kilda Beach. Remarkably, she then went on to qualify for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and claimed a bronze medal behind fellow Australian, Emily Tapp. Parker is now eyeing off a spot on the Paralympic team ahead of Tokyo 2020. “I’m really looking forward to doing paratriathlon for as long as I can,” she said. “It would be absolutely amazing to make the [team] for Tokyo and would top off everything I’ve had to go through in order to get there.”

Place cauliflower in a food processor and process until it reaches a rice-like consistency. Heat oil in a large frying pan and sauté cauliflower and zucchini for about 5 mins.

In a saucepan, warm ½ cup of milk.

1 cup zucchini, peeled and shredded

In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining milk and the flour until there are no lumps. Then whisk this mixture into the warm milk. Continue whisking gently until milk thickens to the consistency of heavy cream.

Cook time: 30 mins

1-2 Tbsp coconut oil ¾ cup milk of choice 1 Tbsp tapioca flour 1½ cups cheddar cheese, shredded 1 Tbsp chia seeds Sea Salt and pepper, to taste 1 tsp paprika powder

Spread the sourdough with ricotta. Top with banana and sprinkle with cinnamon. Option 3 2 Tbsp peanut butter 2 slices sourdough, toasted 1 large banana, peeled, sliced Honey, to serve Spread the sourdough with peanut butter. Top with banana and drizzle with honey.

Mix cheese, chia seeds, sautéed cauliflower and zucchini into the milk-flour mixture and season with salt and pepper. For a smoother consistency you can process using a hand held blender. Place the pasta in a casserole dish and pour the cheese and veggie sauce over it. Sprinkle with paprika powder and shredded cheese (optional) and bake in the oven for 30 mins until the top is golden.

There are few activities more festive than watching Christmas movies during the holiday season. And, now you can watch one of your favourites – the 2003 hit Elf, starring Will Ferrell – come to life on stage. Christmas has arrived early at Hamilton’s Young People’s Theatre (YPT), where 63 junior actors and actresses are performing Elf The Musical JR until Saturday 3 November. After all, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear”. Choreographer Chelsea Willis says it’s the first time the theatre has produced the play in its 70year history, and believes it is the first to bring it to Newcastle. “The musical is very similar to the much-loved movie; audiences will recognise some scenes and lines straight from the film,” she tells Newcastle Weekly.

With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list, and his half-brother doesn’t believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. Phipps adds YPT’s touch by honing in on the skills and strengths of a junior cast. “There are similarities between the musical and the movie, but we’ve also got the added authenticity of about 20 primary school-aged children [acting] as elves, instead of adults on their knees,” he says. “It’s also less a vehicle for Will Ferrell’s comedic

bits than it is about the story.” Willis says the play encourages the children to think about the meaning of Christmas and the value of others. time out Cultures bridged in Kilgour Prize People’s Choice A depiction of colonial era social and political prejudices has taken out the People’s Choice award in Newcastle Art Gallery’s Kilgour Prize. West Australian artist Lori Pensini’s oil on canvas work, Pride and Prejudice, features her cousins, Tyler and Georgia, in her telling of her family’s discovery of their indigenous background. Ms Pensini only recently found out that her ancestors had concealed two sons’ marriages to local Noongar women, which had denied the family knowledge of unions which ultimately spawned her painting’s two contrasting subjects. Pride and Prejudice attracted 10% of the vote, a decision which Newcastle Art Gallery Director

Lauretta Morton hailed. “I’m not surprised that visitors have responded so favourably to this work,” she said. “It becomes apparent when viewing this intimate portrait that the artist has a strong connection to the subjects, and her deft skills in rendering their striped dresses further unifies the strong bond between the cousins.” Ms Pensini will receive $5000 from the bequest of local artist Jack Noel Kilgour. The major figurative and portrait art competition he left behind for Newcastle Art Gallery in 1987 is now one of Australia’s most renowned. Sydney artist Natasha Walsh’s Within the Studio (self-portrait) earned this year’s prize.

Pageant crowns decades of work Sue Turner spent a long time trying to get to where she wanted to be. Along the way, there was unthinkable tragedy – her mother died in a car accident in the late 1980s, her father suffered through a terminal illness, and she faced the heartache of two missing friends, one in 1978, the other in 2001. However, after almost 60,000 hours of charity work, spread across decades, and years competing in various beauty pageant systems, the Thornton mother-of-eight hopes her hard work will help to empower others. Mrs Turner has returned from the Miss and Mrs Global International World Pageant 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa, with three major awards – the Women of Compassion, International Humanity Ambassador, and Mrs Global International World 2018. “We’ve worked very hard to get here, and it’s good that the ‘Mrs’ is getting out there, too,” she said. Her platform for the competition was gender and associated violence, as well as missing persons.

“Two of my girlfriends are [still] missing, Janine Vaughan, since December 2001, and Leanne Goodall, on 30 December 1978; families have been left with no answers,” she added. “Because I’ve got this leg-up internationally, I thought maybe I could help.” Mrs Turner also promoted her vision during the competition. “My vision is to produce empowerment in individuals, who participate in endeavours, and to mould their skills to become better versions of themselves,” she said. “In return, [that will] inspire others to improve and represent their achievements at the highest level of quality and with the highest of professional standards. “We empower women to be themselves and their own kind of beautiful; that’s what I stand by and represent.” Mrs Turner credited Milestone Pageants international director, Mak Malik, and Australian director, Jasmine Farlow, following her win. The Miss and Mrs Global International World Pageant 2019 will take place in London.

Gallery to throw open its doors Want to see what really happens in an artist’s studio? On Saturday 20 October, Newcastle ArtSpace will throw open its doors to the public for an inaugural Open Day in the new location of 91 Chinchen Street, Tighes Hill. Come into a studio and talk to the artist about what inspires them, how they operate, and take a look at works in progress. There is a range of artists and styles, including painters, illustrators, ceramics, jewellers, bespoke fashion, and much more. Works are for sale: it’s never too early to start your Christmas shopping – especially for those hard to buy for people in your life.

A culinary exploration Some of Newcastle’s favourite restaurants have joined forces for a special, all-day event on Saturday 20 October. A range of dining experiences will be on offer, from building your own pancake masterpiece at Cirque, to a lazy, long Italianinspired lunch at Vault 73, and a three-course Turkish banquet at Moor, featuring a belly dancing performance. The event, titled FORAGE, has been organised by Newcastle Now Business Improvement Association, in partnership with Revitalising Newcastle, and in consultation with restaurateurs. Newcastle Now’s executive manager, Richard Christian, says FORAGE will be a celebration of the much-loved East End, which is known for its exceptional food. “It’s also an opportunity for people to meet the hard-working

men and women behind the kitchen counter,” he said. “Diners can move between venues or opt to linger with friends and enjoy a leisurely meal.” Seven businesses are involved, while there is also an Underground Epicurean food trail, which includes four courses and matching wines at different venues. Bocados chef, Raul Cabrera, described FORAGE as an ideal way to welcome people back to the city after the light rail construction period. “Food brings people together and we’re lucky to have so many fantastic choices in the East End,” he said. Cactus, succulents ideal for our climate

Mustard is playful and lively, yet offers a cool, contemporary luxe feel when used to ‘pop’ with charcoal and neutral tones, according to Penny Tsiklas from linen brand, Logan & Mason. “A spicy tone, rich in depth, it’s a perfect choice for that statement lounge, or alternatively as an accent colour for your cushions and throw.” Morgan Kelly, head of creative and photography at Pillow Talk, says mustard is making a comeback “in a huge way”. “A flashback to seventies styling, mustard is still seen as a sophisticated colour and will be a hot trend this season,” she says. “Mustards play a huge part in warming up a space, whether it is a mustard cushion on a luscious emerald couch, a mustard throw on a dark blue bed or even as a wall colour.” And if you think mustard can

only be used in cooler months, think again. “Paired with relaxed white linens and fresh green palms, mustard can take you to a whole different era of summer with a Californian influence,” Morgan says. Pair earthier mustards with linen to set a relaxed mood for the space, matching mustard tones in artwork to accessories like cushions or throws, and adding pops of mustard in the kitchen for a “summer feel”. The kitchen isn’t the only wet area that can benefit from mustard, either. Marc Reed, managing director at Candana, says warm, golden tones are perfect for wet areas and bathrooms because they provide balance to the stark whites of bathroom fi xtures. He recommends using mustard towels and accessories throughout, which work perfectly with copper or brass finish tapware.

I’m sure I’ve said this before, but I am amazed that succulents and cactus are still riding such a wave of popularity. I imagine it’s because such plants are ideal for our Australian climate. They do love it dry so, while we are experiencing a long east coast low, it won’t hurt to move them to a more sheltered spot if in pots. Mother-in-laws tongues and agaves grow in neglected gardens, on footpaths, and under fences, forcing their way between concrete drives and the neighbour’s boundary. Who would have ever considered planting such a specimen? Their fleshy, somewhat spikeylooking leaves are now sought after for pot cultivation. When growing succulents in pots, it is important to control watering – remember, too little is better than too much. The best way to water is to thoroughly saturate the pot, then let it dry right out. When growing cactus, only water a little every couple of weeks, just to keep the root system from drying out. It is essential, when potting cacti and succulents, to have a free draining mix, ideally one which contains coarse river sand - that is, two parts potting mix and one part sand, although there are good mixes available, such as Searles Succulent and Cactus Mix. All plants require nutrients to grow, however, cacti require less

food than other plants to grow. Feed cacti and succulents twice yearly, with a plant food low in nitrogen content. Too much fertiliser will produce a large bloated plant, which has little resistance to disease. Like other plants, these hardy succulents and cacti are prone to pests, the most common being red spider mite and mealy bug, which look a little like sticky flour. It can be devastating and quite infectious, but it can be eradicated with Malathon and White Oil. You would imagine that these hardy plants like to grow in a hot spot - this isn’t always so, but they can be used in total sunshine or even inside. However, a sunny window may be required.

PROJECTS A key aspect of local studies is its relevance. It leads to a better awareness and understanding of our built environment. That’s why I have contributed to a number of state-wide surveys, commemorated centenaries, and been on committees that have resulted in the setting of plaques or panels.

PRESENTATIONS These keep me in touch with the wider community. This year, I have delivered talks and tours for Probus clubs, historical societies, U3A, nursing homes, and for Lake Macquarie council’s over 55s program. Nursing home talks have been rewarding, as they frequently add value to residents’ memories.

These have been a logical outcome from my talks and the time and effort extended accumulating a vast collection of resources. Otherwise, what is the use of them? Also, publishing has been a great way of mobilising information and interest in the local area. I’ve been thrilled with the response to my Fernleigh Track calendars and books on local area hotels.

DISCOVERIES The joy of discovering new, interesting people on memorials, different combinations of awards, or new facts and linkages, is a real research motivator.

LOCAL STUDIES RESEARCHER AND PRESENTER

Ed is a retired Social Sciences teacher, having worked in the state system for 38 years. His teaching reinforced his interest in local studies, while he embraced fieldwork with a passion and brought reality into the classroom via the visual medium. Ed accumulated a vast collection of slides, covering such topics as the changing face of Newcastle, railways, coal mines, memorials, war memorials, aircraft and hotels. His collection and notes, coupled with his interests, have formed the basis of more than 25 publications and the delivery of more than a thousand talks and tours since 1990. 62

FAMILY Having such an interest in the past as a key to understanding the present, my three grandchildren keep me and my wife, Julie, in touch with the young up-and-coming generation. A different, and often refreshing, perspective on matters and opinions broadens one’s horizons. Another key element of lifelong learning.
