From the editor Sportspeople doing good for the community seems to be the flavour of the week.

The rugby league fans among you might recognise our cover star, Sione Finefeuiaki, as a former player for the Sydney Roosters, Melbourne Storm, the Manly Sea Eagles and the Newcastle Knights.

He is pictured with two of his three children – Isileli, 5, and Peni, 9 – to promote an upcoming mission to his birth country of Tonga under the Sione's Academy and Pathways program.

There, Sione and dozens of other Novocastrians will spruik the benefits of all sports, through coaching clinics and matches, and help rebuild Sione's old primary school in Kolonga.

Back on home soil, local ParaTaekwondo instructor Darrel Sparke is giving a voice to thousands of amputees during Amputee Awareness Week (4-11 October).

Having lost part of his right leg in a freak accident in primary school involving a ride-on lawnmower, Darrel brings authenticity and passion to his role as president of the Amputee Association of NSW. This week he gives us the low-down on the association's recent achievements and future goals.

news Taking a strong stance for amputees He may only be one man, but Darrel Sparke is on a mission to effect mass change for Australian amputees.

The local Para-Taekwondo instructor claims, as president of the Amputee Association of NSW, he’s helped the charity do more in the past 12 months than it’s achieved in the last decade.

In recognition of Amputee Awareness Week (4 to 11 October), Mr Sparke told Newcastle Weekly of the great strides the organisation had taken.

He said, while there was no peak national body to cover all Australian states and territories due to varied health services, the association was pushing to forge working relationships with each state body to help people in need.

“The Northern Territory, in particular, is very isolated – especially its Indigenous communities,” he said.

“There is no prosthetist [to make limbs] in the NT; they fly in from Sydney every three weeks.

“This can pose issues, particularly when prosthetics need adjustments or can’t be made within a short timeframe.

“If there’s a practical way we can step in and

help, we will, but we also do a lot of advocating on amputees’ behalf, because I don’t think it’s fair on a community to not know there’s someone who lives around the corner who they could be helping.”

Mr Sparke added the association was trying to turn the tide against a lack of awareness, by involving undergraduate occupational therapist, physiotherapist and medicine university students in its programs, such as Amp Camp.

The only camp of its kind, Amp Camp brings “limb-different” teens aged 12 to 18 from all over Australia together to tackle challenges in a fun, uplifting environment.

Mr Sparke said it was important for decisionmakers to learn firsthand the everyday challenges amputees face – something he knows all too well.

He lost part of his right leg in primary school when a fellow student accidentally ran him over with a ride-on lawnmower.

Despite this, Mr Sparke went on to become Australia’s only amputee 4th Dan Black Belt, and recently finished the Sydney Running Festival Half Marathon, 10 seconds ahead of Newcastle’s

own wheelchair athlete Kurt Fearnley.

As passionate as he has since become about advocating for amputees, Mr Sparke hoped he could inspire others to take action.

“Sadly, [amputation] is still a taboo topic – we’re told not to look, not to ask,” he said.

“But a little bit of information and awareness can help bring the passion out in more people.”

news Support grows for Newstart Allowance campaign The responses came back thick and fast.

A simple question – R U OK? – reached followers of the Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union on Facebook as part of the national suicide prevention initiative.

“The replies had people stating ‘no’, and they went on to explain certain things that had been happening, like being unable to fix their car, or feed their children, or pay their electricity bill,” Newcastle Anti-Poverty Alliance coordinator, Chris Parish, said.

The alliance is a nonincorporated collective of individuals and organisations dedicated to the alleviation of entrenched disadvantage and poverty within the Hunter Region.

It called on Newcastle council to publicly endorse a campaign to increase the Newstart Allowance at last week’s meeting.

According to the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), there were 848,600 unemployed recipients of Newstart or Youth Allowance in March 2018.

ACOSS stated about 60% of recipients of unemployment payments received them for more than 12 months and 41% for at least two years.

The exclusion of large groups from the labour market, including those with limited or out-of-date skills, mature-aged candidates, the disabled, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and people from non-English speaking

backgrounds, was deemed an issue that had been unresolved for too long.

Mr Parish said the alliance was determined to support ACOSS’ Raise the Rate campaign.

“We’ve adopted their campaign and slogan because we believe that the rate of Newstart, which hasn’t really changed since 1994, is insignificant,” he said.

“It’s actually appallingly low; you cannot adequately survive on [about] $30 a day with expenses like accommodation, food and electricity, particularly in Newcastle.”

The Newstart Allowance, which sits below the Henderson poverty line – a threshold for measuring a person, or families’, circumstances and relative poverty – is administered through the federal government’s Department of Human Services.

If you are single and without dependent children, the maximum

fortnightly payment is $545.80.

This increases to $590.40 per fortnight if the recipient has a child or dependent children, while the same fortnightly figure – $590.40 – applies to those unemployed and over the age of 60.

The motion, put before Newcastle council, acknowledged that payment was a federal responsibility, but stressed the harsh effects of dire poverty were felt at local level.

Newcastle council unanimously agreed to back the campaign, which requested written support, directed to both Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Leader of the Opposition, Bill Shorten.

It will seek their commitment to increase the Newstart Allowance to the level of the Henderson poverty line.

The motion came ahead of Anti-Poverty Week, from 14 to 20 October.

news Ride puts rare diseases on map Tim Donohue had always been a fan of the former Australian cricket captain.

So, the Lake Macquarie father-of-three jumped at the chance to join an annual fundraiser for the Steve Waugh Foundation.

The Captain’s Ride, a six-day, on-road cycle tour, vigorously pursues its goal to change the lives of children who battle rare diseases.

More than 6,000 rare diseases affect about 1.5 million Australians, including roughly 300,000 children.

Tim’s two-year-old son, Samuel, was diagnosed with a metabolic condition called Glycogen Storage Disease.

The disease, classified as type 3a, or severe, affects Samuel’s ability to maintain healthy blood sugar levels and, if left untreated, will lead to hypoglycaemia.

Despite their own struggles, Tim, and his wife, Carly, decided he should apply for The Captain’s Ride to support others in a similar position.

“Through the process of [Samuel’s] diagnosis, we noticed a number of families who were worse off than us,” Tim says.

“We understand that our life isn’t perfect, but it could be much worse too.

“I’m a massive fan of Steve Waugh after growing up and watching him play cricket, and I knew of his fundraisers when he was playing and his work with Mother Teresa [in the 1990s].

“I appreciated the work he was doing with the Steve Waugh Foundation and there was a natural synergy there in terms of getting involved [in the ride], since it raises funds for rare diseases.”

In the lead-up to The Captain’s Ride, a charity event, Captain’s Tales: A Night With Steve Waugh, will take place from 7pm to 10pm on Friday 12 October at the Newcastle Exhibition and Conference Centre (NEX).

Guests will hear Steve talk about his stellar cricketing career, which spanned an Australian record of 168 Test matches, as well as 325 One Day Internationals.

He’ll also mention his role in multiple Ashes and World Cup wins, plus the vital work of his foundation.

news Businesses started their engines at an information forum last week as preparations for November’s Newcastle 500 raced ahead.

Almost 60 business people attended the event, hosted by Newcastle council, at the city hall to discuss how they could benefit from the second edition of the Supercars race.

The city’s Newcastle 500 project manager, Ryan Tranter, said the aim was to put more Novocastrians in the thick of the action this time.

“Last year, we advised commuters to avoid the city because of the disruption from light rail construction,” he said.

“But, this year, with the light rail build completed, we want to stack the city.

“We’re working on some fantastic ideas for getting the whole community involved right across the race weekend and we’ll be sharing more details soon.”

The city’s partners at the event included Supercars Australia, which outlined changes to the 2018 event, as well as traffic and transport planning.

Business Improvement Association, Newcastle Now, also discussed how local businesses could become involved in the CBD activations, while The Business Centre, Newcastle, offered free business advice to the attendees.

The Newcastle 500 will take place from 23 to 25 November.

Last year’s edition reportedly attracted more than 190,000 people into the city.

news Beach safety bolstered One of Lake Macquarie’s most popular beaches has been bolstered through the opening of a new lifeguard observation room.

The facility’s opening, at Catherine Hill Bay Beach, coincided with the start of the 2018-19 patrolled beach season, which kicked off at the weekend.

Lake Macquarie council’s Beach Lifeguard Service Team Leader, Paul Stone, said it would provide an excellent vantage point for crews, who previously had no permanent structure from which to base their patrol and monitor beach activity.

An estimated 1.5 million people visited Lake Macquarie’s four patrolled beaches last season, up 15% on the previous year.

cover story Sione stands tall in Tonga’s corner Sione Finefeuiaki wants his birth country, Tonga, to field a competitive side in every sport by 2021.

The former professional rugby league player for the Sydney Roosters, Melbourne Storm, the Manly Sea Eagles and the Newcastle Knights is dedicating his days as a retired sportsman to helping the children of Tonga fulfil their sporting dreams.

Tomorrow (Friday 5 October), Finefeuiaki, who now lives in Cameron Park, will lead a delegation of more than 50 Novocastrians – including doctors, nurses, tradespeople and sporting officials – to his hometown of Kolonga for two weeks, under the Sione’s Academy and Pathways program.

Their mission: to promote health and wellbeing through youth sporting clinics and information sessions, whilst renovating Finefeuiaki’s former primary school, Kolonga Government Primary School.

Among them, coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists will visit local high schools to conduct clinics and workshops, while a Newcastle girls’ netball team will play against

local and national rivals.

Tradies will lend a hand to rebuild the entire school, which includes a new roof and plumbing.

Nurses and doctors are also set to visit the hospital to provide check-ups.

Having founded the academy in May last year, it will be Finefeuiaki’s first overseas mission, as part of a long-term vision to better the lives of Tongan children and give them a leg-up into sporting careers, as well as to boost Tonga’s national and international sporting presence over the next three years.

“I haven’t rushed it because I want to make sure we get it right; I want a program that’s consistent,” Finefeuiaki tells Newcastle Weekly.

“I’m really passionate about giving from the heart and making a positive difference to the community.

“I want to show these kids that they can do anything they want to; that fitness and a good education will take them further in life.”

news Artefacts on the move Thousands of precious artefacts will be shipped out of Newcastle Maritime Museum this week.

About 7,000 items, which range from delicate paintings up to 200 years old, to boats, including one that measures 12 metres long and weighs six tonnes, are bound for the Thales ship maintenance facility at Carrington.

The collection was, for more than a decade, exhibited at the former maritime museum site in Honeysuckle.

However, as Newcastle Weekly previously reported, Newcastle council and landowners, Hunter Development Corporation (HDC), helped find a new home for the artefacts when the heritage building’s lease expired in May. The collection’s relocation will allow preliminary curation work to begin before a new, permanent

exhibition re-emerges next year at Newcastle Museum.

Model boats and a significant shipwreck artefact from the Susan Gilmore, an American vessel that ran aground in the 1880s, have been on exhibition at Newcastle Museum since the closure of the maritime museum.

“Newcastle Museum has been working with the former Newcastle Maritime Museum volunteers and, during these school holidays, they will be demonstrating some maritime skills to visitors,” Newcastle Museum director, Julie Baird, said.

“This significant collection is an important element in the story of Newcastle, and I am so relieved to know it will remain safe and secure for future local generations to experience.”

Volunteers will help move artefacts again, just as they did when the maritime museum, based in Honeysuckle, closed earlier this year.

Ian Jones, said he was pleased the artefacts would be preserved.

“On behalf of the Newcastle Maritime Museum Society, we are grateful to Thales for agreeing to store the collection,” he said.

“I’d also like to thank HDC for funding the cost of the relocation and for their considerable support over the past decade.”

Mr Jones told the Weekly earlier this year that it was the right time to make a move.

He added it had been difficult

to attract both visitors and muchneeded funds.

“Under the old direction, the place never changed; nothing has been moved,” he said at the time.

“So, we’re pretty excited to get other parties involved so we can get some of the stuff out of mothballs and on display for everyone to see.”

HDC will start maintenance works on the Honeysuckle-based building once the artefacts are safely relocated.

news Ocsober teaches valuable life lesson Life Education has encouraged Australians to lose the booze this month.

The non-profit organisation’s fundraising initiative, Ocsober, now in its 10th year, aims to reach a target of $500,000 to bankroll programs that empower children across the country.

A survey, undertaken by Life Education in February, found 95% of parents rated online safety as ‘very important’ due to the growth of cyber bullying, while illegal drugs, learning, resilience and alcohol also ranked highly on their list of issues facing Australian children.

Ocsober challenges adults to cut out alcohol during October, along with their family and friends, in a bid to give back to the community, raise money for a worthy cause, and generate exposure about the negative alcohol culture in Australia.

One of Ocsober’s ambassadors for 2018, Newcastle-raised wellness advocate and former Miss Universe Australia winner, Tegan Martin, says she’s passionate about helping future generations reach their full potential.

“I truly believe health can often by impacted

by one’s relationship with drugs and alcohol,” she tells Newcastle Weekly.

“I experienced times in my teens where alcohol was doing me harm, and it wasn’t until my twenties that I learned I didn’t have to get blind drunk every time I enjoyed a beverage.

“If I had received more of this education, I may have figured it out a little earlier.

“I want every child in every school to be guided on this subject – I think it should be mandatory.”

Fellow ambassador and author of The Social Rebellion, Maz Compton, believes Ocsober can “redefine your relationship” with alcohol.

“It can be easy to end up slightly dependent on a wine at the end of the day or to survive the week,” she says.

news A rainbow through the storm clouds Through grief and loss, young mum Brianna Hudson has found some small comfort in sharing her son’s story.

Brianna’s first pregnancy began like any other.

She and her partner, John, were expecting a healthy baby boy in February.

Baby James met all the benchmarks at each scan, and everything was progressing well.

On the morning of 12 February 2018, Brianna went into labour.

She and John went to John Hunter Hospital, where Brianna and the baby were checked over.

The Mayfield couple was told to labour at home and return to the hospital when Brianna’s waters broke or when the pain became unbearable.

So, they did. They returned later that night, at around 7.30pm, when Brianna was admitted.

When doctors checked James’ heartbeat again, they discovered it was low, so Brianna was rushed to the operating theatre for an emergency caesarian.

“I was put under general anaesthetic from about 8.30pm until 10.30pm,” Brianna told Newcastle Weekly.

“When I woke up, I just remember asking where my baby was, and no one was saying anything.”

Sadly, James was stillborn. Doctors were unable to resuscitate him.

John and Brianna were moved to a birthing suite with a cold crib, where they stayed with their newborn son for a few days.

“At first I was scared to see him and hold him, but John was really encouraging, and I’m so glad I did,” Brianna said.

“I held him for a long time.”

In nothing short of a miracle, John and Brianna are expecting again – a rainbow baby.

They are 27 weeks into the pregnancy. This time, it’s a girl, due on New Year’s Day. Brianna said it had helped, throughout this emotional rollercoaster ride, to talk openly about James and honour his legacy.

She had done so through regular counselling with Red Nose and linking up with other mums who shared her experience via online forums.

It’s why she’s agreed to tell her story at Sandgate Cemetery’s upcoming Pregnancy &

news Petition calls for upgrade to Thornton intersection Maitland state MP Jenny Aitchison has launched a petition to act as the “community’s vehicle” in the push for an urgent upgrade at a busy stretch of main road.

Ms Aitchison introduced a Notice of Motion in NSW Parliament last week over safety concerns at the Raymond Terrace Road and Haussman Drive intersection, Thornton.

She said that, according to Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) data, there were eight recorded crashes at, or in the close vicinity of, the intersection in the 10 years to June 2018.

The Labor representative pointed to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which highlighted the suburb of Chisholm’s rapid growth

over a five-year period.

“The population has gone from 184 in 2011 to 1,461 in 2016,” she said.

“The number of motor vehicles in the suburb has risen sharply from 60 in 2011 to 452 at the 2016 count.

“And, two years, later both the population and number of vehicles have increased further.

“This is a busy section of main road connecting Maitland to Raymond Terrace, and the location is the epicentre of residential boom – surely traffic lights are needed here.”

Ms Aitchison added Maitland council planned to improve the Haussman Drive portion of the intersection, but Raymond Terrace Road was the responsibility of the RMS.

news Midwife scoops major award A young Newcastle midwife has been recognised for his efforts to improve the care of pregnant women at the 2018 NSW Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

Brendon Williams, who only began his career as a clinical midwifery educator at John Hunter Hospital in January, supported a major practice change initiative to assist clinical staff in the delivery of recommended antenatal care for women who consume alcohol during pregnancy.

His work saw him take home the Excellence in Innovation – Education gong.

He was one of four finalists from Hunter New England Local Health District in the state-wide awards.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard presented the awards during

a ceremony held at Parliament House last week, with almost half of the 35 finalists from regional and rural NSW. Mr Hazzard thanked the winners and 23 nominees for their outstanding contribution to patient care.

“This is an opportunity to recognise not only these extraordinary people, but all the men and women across our health system who consistently do such a fantastic job, providing the best possible care to patients, every day,” Mr Hazzard said.

Among other winners was Broken Hill midwife Boe Calvert, who received the Excellence in Midwifery – Registered Midwife award for her work to improve maternity care for Aboriginal women and families in rural communities.

sport Club paddles towards fundraiser The Newcastle Hunter Dragon Boat Club will host a community regatta at Carrington Foreshore to raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation.

More than 200 competitors are set to paddle in a series of heats on Sunday 14 October, before a final 200-metre race along Throsby Creek.

Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed teams, in addition to those that place first, second and third.

The club’s Dragons Abreast squad, made up of an incredible group of paddlers and cancer survivors, chose to fundraise for the Mark Hughes Foundation.

Established it 2014, the charity conducts research, creates awareness, and supports brain cancer patients and their families.

During the community regatta, paddlers and spectators can enjoy a barbecue, hot drinks and ice-cold treats, with each vendor to donate part of their sales to the foundation.

The Newcastle Hunter Dragon Boat Club, founded in 2000, consists of more than 130 energetic, enthusiastic members who come

Iconic surf contest rides equality wave One of Australia’s oldest and most iconic surfing contests will become the first non-tour event to follow the lead of the World Surf League by offering equal prize money for men and women.

The Mattara Surf Classic will offer a record $4,000 winner-takes-all prize in both the men’s and women’s events this year, thanks to the support of its headline sponsor – Newcastle construction firm Michilis.

Tasty weekend eats There’s no better time than the weekend to get creative in the kitchen. Why not try your hand at making these delicious apple waffles on a lazy Saturday or Sunday morning?

Apple waffles Recipe courtesy of Healthy Little Foodies for Aussie Apples www.aussieapples.com.au Makes: 3 full sized waffles 2 large apples, chopped into small chunks (roughly 0.5cm)

Wet

2 Tbsp butter

1 egg

½ tsp cinnamon

½ tsp vanilla extract

40g sultanas

2 Tbsp butter, melted

Dry

Topping

½ cup plain flour

Sprinkle of cinnamon

½ cup wholemeal flour

1 large apple, chopped into chunks

1 cup milk

2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp cinnamon Heat a non-stick frypan over a medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of butter.

Allow to melt and add the chopped apple and cinnamon. Reduce the heat and sauté until soft (around 3 mins). Remove from the heat.

Place the sultanas in a small bowl and soak with boiling water.

Pre-heat your waffle machine.

In a large mixing bowl combine the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl mix together the wet ingredients. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir. Be careful not to over mix – some lumps are fine.

Drain the sultanas and add to the waffle batter along with the sautéed apples.

Stir until just combined.

Spray or lightly brush your waffle machine with oil on both sides. Scoop a third of the mixture into the centre of your waffle machine. Close and cook until the light indicates it is ready (this may vary depending on brand of waffle machine, cook to manufacturer instructions). Transfer to a cooling rack and repeat until mixture is finished.

Serve with remaining apple and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Men prance and entrance

It would be folly to lump Men in Pink Tights in the same category as ordinary drag shows.

No – this thrilling production, direct from New York, is so much more than that.

An all-male ballet cast brings a new level of finesse to the fine artform, with its combination of perfect dancing technique, tongue-in-cheek humour and intentional foibles, dancing mishaps and hissy fits by men playing both male and female roles.

Are the men gorgeous enough to give women a run for their money?

Well, artistic director and star, Victor Trevino, will leave that up to you to decide when Men in Pink Tights takes the stage at Newcastle’s grand Civic Theatre on Thursday 25 October.

Speaking to Newcastle Weekly from New York ahead of the show’s Australian tour, Trevino said

audiences would be pleasantly surprised.

“I think they can expect to have a really fun time,” he said.

“They’ll be surprised by the quality of dancing and amazed by how men can dance on their toes.

“It is primarily a dance show and all the dancers are professionals – [dance is] where our hearts and artistry lie.”

Joining the Les Ballets Eloelle dance company for the first time is Townsville dancer Shaughn Neil Pegoraro as Natalia Aussiepova – a play on Russian ballerina Natalia Osipova’s name.

Trevino said he would love it if fellow Australians could come and “cheer her on”.

Les Ballet Eloelle is one of the few all-male comedic ballet companies in the world, whose breadth and depth of work is truly astounding.

It boasts more than 50 classical ballets in its repertoire and 20 of the best international male dancers from 13 countries.

Councils dream of vibrant, safe nightlife It’s not meant to be the stuff of nightmares.

Newcastle council has tossed up the idea of a ‘Night Mayor’ position in a bid to grow the city’s nighttime economy and culture.

The council will consider following the lead of major cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam and New York in creating the role, alternatively called Night Tsar, to serve as an ambassador after dark.

At its meeting last week, a motion, put forward by councillor John MacKenzie, called for a costed

proposal on the position.

It would aim to complement two of the council’s plans – the Newcastle After Dark Strategy 2018-2022 and a draft Live Music Strategy.

The successful motion pointed out the city’s night-time economy employed more than 12,000 Novocastrians and accounted for 5.4% of the total Newcastle economy, with an estimated value of $1.36 billion each year.

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said any strategies that could help the

city thrive safely after dark were worth investigating.

“We recognise that, as our city continues to grow, we need to support a greater diversity of nighttime venues, and encourage a safe, vibrant and creative public culture of nightlife for all Novocastrians,” she said.

Over in Lake Macquarie, a raft of activities are being considered as the council develops its own nighttime economy strategy.

Mayor Kay Fraser said she wanted to hear from residents.

“We’re talking about more than just pubs and clubs – this could be anything taking place from early evening to late at night, including sport and exercise activities, night time markets or events, cinema under the stars, live music performances, late-night shopping experiences, and more.”

Pop-up stalls will take place this month, starting at the South Piazza, Charlestown Square, today (Thursday 4 October) from 11am.

Last year’s popular ‘Poo Room’ has been upgraded to a ‘Poo Palace’, taking children and adults on a sensory adventure through the gastro tract to highlight the importance of diet in gut health, while also raising awareness of disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and bowel cancer.

Royal spoof premiere on way The Australian premiere of a brand-new musical comedy is about to hit Newcastle.

Deanna, The Musical focuses on Deanna, Princess of New South Wales and future Queen of Australia, in an ordinary local sporting club one extraordinary night, with events that change the life of a far-from-ordinary princess forever after.

A satire on royalty, celebrity and marketing, this story takes the audience beyond “and they lived happily ever after” to 10 years post Deanna’s marriage to Crown Prince of New South Wales, His Royal Highness Prince Bruce.

The stage is set at a local club on a Friday night, with the on-stage entertainment featuring Princess Deanna and Irving, a former old-school public servant and now her professional assistant, who undertakes several roles in Princess Deanna’s one-woman show.

Together, they perform a song and dance act that she’s devised for touring to promote the Royal family and the continuation of Australia’s monarchy, while marketing an exclusive range of beauty and fashion accessories.

On the evening, we learn that Princess Deanna

is wondering if she will ever become The Queen.

“One day, an old uni friend suggested that I revisit and expand my musical for staging with local talent in my home town of Newcastle,” she said.

“Besides being a satirical story with many laughs in store for audiences, this is a show full of music we know and love from musicals and pop songs of the late 20th Century – revamped with a twist.”

My favourite things BIKE RIDING I am a proud ‘mamil’ (middle-aged man in lycra) and not only enjoy the exercise, but also the camaraderie of the riding group and the broader cycling community. Newcastle is a perfect place for bike riding.

RUGBY REFEREE This is a pursuit I took up later in life. It is a great way to give back to a sport that I enjoyed playing for a long time. I don’t have time to coach or manage a team, but enjoy getting out there and experiencing it ‘live’ week to week.

Bob Hawes began his role as chief executive with the Hunter Business Chamber (HBC) in January 2017. The HBC is more than 130 years old, boasts about 2,000 members, and is the largest regional business chamber in Australia. Bob has extensive experience and knowledge across regional development, infrastructure planning, economic and social impact, and land use strategy. Bob feels lucky that he enjoys his role immensely.
