This week... From the editor Something you might not know about me, is that I am of Aboriginal descent. There’s Scottish and Welsh heritage on my paternal side, too, but it’s all part of the intricate tapestry that is my DNA. I’ve never been one to openly declare my Aboriginality. I’ve never thought it “significant” enough to justify ticking a box; perhaps (and I speak only for myself here) because I felt I needed to be actively involved in Aboriginal practices to own a connection to the Indigenous Australian community. But my view on that has changed since speaking to this week’s cover star, Indigenous artist Maree Bisby, of Speers Point. Learning about Maree’s battle to reconcile with her own identity, she left me with this quote, which stuck with me: “In Aboriginal communities, they don’t talk about percentages – you either are [Aboriginal], or you aren’t. And if that’s who you are, then why deny it?” If my great great grandmother’s marriage certificate is to be believed, I’m 1/64th Aboriginal; if her death certificate is more accurate, I'm 1/32nd. If you ask Maree, it doesn’t matter. Read more about Maree’s journey on page 32, as we prepare to celebrate NAIDOC Week – and with it, the achievements of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – from 8 to 15 July.

news Warning sign to protect koalas A new partnership aims to reduce koala injuries and fatalities in the Port Stephens region. Newcastle Airport has teamed up with Port Stephens Koalas to buy a mobile roadside warning sign, which will be used in areas known to have large, active koala populations around Williamtown, the Tilligerry Peninsula and Nelson Bay. The specially-manufactured sign will increase motorists’ awareness of koala proximity and encourage them to slow down. Port Stephens Koalas secretary, Ron Land, welcomed the initiative. “The mobile sign will undoubtedly save koala lives at a time when the numbers of the precious local koala population are in freefall,” he says. “We are in a desperate struggle to arrest the decline of the local population of koalas and every koala we can save from serious or fatal injury caused by road strike is a godsend.” Mr Land says Port Stephens Koalas expects to take into care about 50 koalas this year. “Sadly, we lost 30 koalas on the Tomaree and Tilligerry Peninsulas in 2016/17,” he says.
“This great kindness from Newcastle Airport will lead to a reduction in these fatalities.” The partnership follows recent support from the state government and Port Stephens Council towards building a $3 million koala sanctuary at One Mile. A long-awaited NSW Koala Strategy, announced in May, endorsed a community campaign to provide a site for research and education, as well as a clinic for the treatment of koalas in rehabilitation. Newcastle Airport chief executive, Peter Cock, praised the plans. “We are very encouraged by Port Stephens Koalas plans to establish a koala tourist education centre,” he says. “It will provide improved clinical and research facilities to care for injured koalas and will also help to boost the local tourism industry.” Dr Cock adds he is impressed by the ongoing work of Port Stephens Koalas. “The dedicated team of volunteers [there] works tirelessly to sustain the local koala populations and protect these Australian icons for

future generations,” he says. “I’ve visited their facilities and was very impressed by their professionalism and passion for what they do.” Visit portstephenskoalas.com.au for more details on the organisation’s work. - Ben Murphy

news Boxing gym hangs up gloves An old-school boxing gym at the epicentre of Newcastle’s light rail project withstood numerous blows, but the fight finally ended at the weekend. Tuff’N Up Boxing closed its doors on Saturday after 20 years, citing a lack of parking for its customers, as well as financial and emotional strain. Trainer Peter Hallett, who ran the gym on Beresford Street with his wife Sue, believed the state government had not given the light rail project enough consideration. “It’s just a mad rush; Newcastle had to have something done to it, progress had to happen, but unfortunately, we’re just collateral damage,” he said. “Sue and I sat down and made a decision; it was hard on both of us. “There was such a strain financially and emotionally – every day you’re trying to work out how to pay your bills and hoping you get a good crowd in [to the gym].” Mr Hallett said he appreciated the wave of support from the community since the gym announced its closure. “I’ve been really heartened by the response, particularly from people I don’t even know,” he said.
Welcome to your new home...
“It’s good to know that Newcastle still has that small-town charm.” Newcastle Now, a non-profit business improvement association, stated it was aware of 15 vacancies and nine closures since late last year. However, it added not all the closures were necessarily due to light rail construction. The association announced the second stage of a light rail relief program last week. It stressed funds were dependent on Newcastle council’s approval of the support program, while applicants would be required to provide evidence of the light rail construction’s direct impact on revenue and profitability. Once an assessment is completed, businesses may access up to $5,000 either through a rebate of the city centre benefit (special rate) or other financial assistance, which will not have to be repaid. Newcastle Now’s executive manager, Richard Christian, said the goal was to provide “immediate, targeted and meaningful relief”. “It has been a challenging period for many businesses and it is heartbreaking to see closures,”

he said. “Newcastle Now is doing everything it can to provide essential support to businesses during these difficult times, and providing some financial assistance is one of the measures we see as being critical to helping struggling businesses.” The first stage of the association’s support program was launched in May. It involved a free consultation with a business adviser, a business health check, including a disruption action plan, and a series of workshops. A NEW RETIREMENT
COMMUNITY IN NEWCASTLE Construction has begun at the $28 million Oak Tree Retirement Villages development in The Bunderra Estate, Boolaroo.
Demand for retirement village living continues to increase throughout Australia with 1 in 7 people now aged 65 years and over. The Boolaroo project is the second development undertaken by Oak Tree Retirement Villages in The Hunter Valley with approval to expand the footprint to Heritage Parc, Rutherford and Kanwal later this year. Local construction company Mavid Construction Pty Ltd have been awarded the contract as primary builder on the 2-hectare site.
1 E G W! A O T S GN N I L SEL
Stage 1, valued at $8.4 million includes 31 villas, the village centre, bowling green and swimming pool. The Oak Tree Group have remained committed to build smaller, boutique style villages for residents, who wish to remain living independently in an environment with like-minded neighbours. The Oak Tree Group are proud to confirm the Boolaroo development will follow-suit with only 61 villas to be built. The development will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom designs with a full size kitchen and a private courtyard. Oak Tree representative Lyn GoodenCollis said “residents are not compromising when downsizing. Our villas are spacious, stylish and aesthetically pleasing with modern finishes. Most importantly, residents
are provided with the opportunity to age in a place without having to worry about the heavy burden of home and garden maintenance.” “If personal care or domestic assistance is required down the track, individuals are able to utilise the community care provider of their choice.” Oak Tree communities are registered and operated in accordance with the Retirement Villages Act and all associated benefits of the legislation. An affordable purchase model helps residents transition to a new home and lifestyle, without incurring the cost of stamp duty or GST.

news Slow going on Glendale interchange State and local governments are at loggerheads over the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange. Lake Macquarie council told Newcastle Weekly it had not received a written response to its independent cost-benefit analysis of the $152 million infrastructure project, undertaken in 2016. “Council has been advised that the analysis of the proposal by relevant state agencies is ongoing,” a council spokesperson said. The state government unlocked $360,000 in the 2018-19 budget to allow Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to complete a strategic business case, in addition to the $1.7 million allocated in last year’s budget. No further funding was provided, aside from that which is to be used for planning purposes. The sticking point is the Pennant Street bridge. When built, this section, precisely estimated to cost $32 million, will extend over the main northern railway line in Cardiff to the new intersection at Main Road and Stockland Drive, Glendale, creating a direct link between the two suburbs. The intersection opened more than a year ago, providing new access to Stockland Glendale and
Hunter Sports Centre. However, the Pennant Street bridge – the second part of stage one – is not yet shovel-ready, with the council having already allocated $6 million to this phase, and seeking another $13 million each from the state and federal governments to proceed. “Council believes the delivery of the Pennant Street bridge is the missing link that will best meet the public transport and traffic flow challenges of a fast-growing residential and economic hub,” the council spokesperson said. “Council has conducted detailed analysis of the area to reach its preferred solution. “However, we are open to working with the government if it can produce a viable alternative.” Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said the government had been meeting with the council regarding its proposal, as well as the transport minister, Andrew Constance. “The government does not agree a bridge at Pennant Street is the most cost-effective solution to their aims,” Mr MacDonald said. “Additionally, RMS have indicated they have concerns about safety consequences.

“I am advised RMS will soon be releasing alternative proposals. “If they progress, funding would be sought through the Transport for NSW infrastructure processes.” The second and final stage of the project – a new train station at Glendale and the transport interchange itself – is classed as a “future project”, estimated to cost around $120 million. - Georgia Osland

The royal commission into banking misconduct has spurred many a conversation about its potential impact on Newcastle’s property market. With banks, superannuation companies, and the financial services sector being scrutinised, it’s easy to understand why. But investment property strategist Mike Harvey, of On Your Side Investments, says, for the most part, the royal commission won’t be felt by home buyers and investors, but rather, lenders and mortgage brokers. “Brokers have found things much harder,” Mr Harvey tells Newcastle Weekly. “The extra compliance is going to come no matter what, and lenders have to pass those extra costs on somewhere – to customers, of course, in the form of rate rises. “They’re unlikely to increase brokers’ commissions, so that’s an extra burden for brokers.” Mr Harvey believes some prospective home buyers will feel the pinch as banks tighten lending

criteria and reign in “bad” (risky) loans, mostly due to historically-low interest rates. However, if anything, he says more investors may lose interest in loan applications and move on as the application process is slowed by the banks doing their due diligence while the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) watches their every move. Fewer buyers in the market could curb the construction of new homes, prompting price stabilisation, but Mr Harvey says we must consider house prices separately in each city. “Real estate is cyclical,” he says. “Newcastle has enjoyed strong growth, and I think this phase still has some legs. “Every classic boom starts in the middle of a city and reverberates outward. It takes three to four years. So, in places like Canberra, Wollongong and Newcastle, we are still seeing those effects, but [prices] should start to plateau in about 12 to 18 months.” - Georgia Osland
Wallsend’s flood-prone Tyrrell Street Bridge is set to be replaced. Newcastle council’s 2018/19 budget includes $2.2 million to replace the bridge, which represents the first step in flood mitigation works at Wallsend. The confirmation that work will get under way in the new financial year is welcome news to Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery. “The Minister for Utilities recently visited Wallsend to look at the works that Hunter Water will also need to undertake to complement the work being done by Newcastle council,” Ms Hornery said. “I am hopeful that these ongoing discussions will lead to Hunter Water making a commitment to start the works they need to do in the near future.”

news Foundation primed for historic Borneo adventure
A footbridge in a rainforest in Sandakan, Borneo, and, inset, Newcastle Knights legends Adam MacDougall, Mark Hughes and Paul Harragon at the launch of the trek.
They will follow the path trodden by Australian prisoners of war in the Sandakan death marches. A group of 32 supporters have set an ambitious target to complete a 12-day Borneo Coast to Coast trek, in Southeast Asia, this October to
raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation. Former Newcastle Knights captain Paul Harragon, who will lead the group alongside Hughes, says he’s excited about the adventure. “It is sure to have its challenges,
but we are all very determined to get there and raise as much money as we can for the Mark Hughes Foundation along the way,” he says. “There’s a wonderful group of passionate people signed up so far and, with a few limited spots left, I encourage anyone thinking about it to join us. “My favourite part will be walking where the soldiers before us have walked on the Sandakan death march and retracing their steps.” In 1945, with Allied forces advancing towards Borneo, the Japanese sent about 2,000 Australian and British prisoners westward to Ranau, in Borneo’s rugged interior. Weak and sick prisoners staggered along jungle tracks for around 260 kilometres. Many died along the way; their bodies never recovered. Only six prisoners – all Australians – survived
the war. It is widely considered the greatest single atrocity committed against Australians in World War II. The Borneo Coast to Coast trek follows last year’s hike to Mt Everest Base Camp, which raised about $500,000 for brain cancer research. Proceeds from the Borneo adventure will support the next step in the Mark Hughes Foundation’s Strategic Research Program. “A major grant round will be opened in October this year to fund grants that showcase innovation,” Hughes says. “We want to fund big ideas that will take us closer to our aim of substantially increasing brain cancer survival rates.” Brain cancer is the biggest killer of children younger than 10 and adults under 40 years of age in Australia. - Ben Murphy

news Campaign after shock diagnosis Emily Taylor browsed social media in search of a distraction amid the chaos of her identical twin sister’s bowel cancer diagnosis. Up popped an advertisement for Dry July – a non-profit foundation that, since 2008, has inspired 130,000 Australians to give up alcohol for a month, raising about $30 million for people affected by cancer. “I had a quick look at it, not knowing 100% what it was about, and saw that I could raise money for the Calvary Mater Newcastle,” Emily says. “We had just found out that [my sister] Christina would be having chemotherapy there and I thought: ‘What better way to support her than to help raise money for the hospital that would be supporting her through this cancer journey?’” The response has been overwhelming. Emily is Dry July’s highest individual fundraiser to date, amassing more than $7,000 for the cause. She says the campaign is a chance to bring much-needed awareness to bowel cancer among younger generations.
Both Emily and Christina are just 29 years old. After experiencing stomach pain in January, Christina was eventually diagnosed with bowel cancer. It has now reached stage four, and spread to her pelvic area, including her ovaries and uterus. “Bowel cancer, stool tests, ‘number twos’, is such a taboo topic in a lot of generations, but mainly the younger, and especially males,” Emily says. “All of this has been quite a big shock and impacted our family greatly. “No one her age should have to think about the rocky road ahead like this; being young and recently married, it’s hard to think about the possibility of dying, potentially not being able to have kids of your own. “It’s so much to think of at 29 years old, but she is such a trooper and rolling with the punches and trying to raise as much awareness as possible. “This [Dry July] campaign helps me to help others, as well as Christina, plus it’s also a great distraction from all the chaos going on and a great detox for the month.”

Push for electric vehicles A fast charger at Wallsend has become the first of about 40 stations to be rolled out across the state as part of a push to boost the uptake of electric vehicles in Australia. The launch coincided with the NRMA’s release of a policy paper that called for the federal government to offer households financial incentives to purchase electric vehicles and prioritise a rollout of charging infrastructure, so motorists could benefit from lower transport costs. NRMA chief executive Rohan Lund said, despite the market being in its infancy in Australia, there was an opportunity to develop an ecosystem to support the adoption and uptake of electric vehicles. “Australia no longer manufactures cars locally and global manufacturers are now shifting their focus and investment to electric and hybrid technology,

so Australia needs to be prepared,” he said. “Our network will cover major highway routes across NSW and the ACT, removing range anxiety, with fast chargers within 150 kilometres of each other.” The Wallsend site, which would fully charge an electric vehicle in 20 to 30 minutes, was delivered with the support of Newcastle council. “Council has offered two parking spaces in the carpark on the corner of Nelson and Kemp streets,” lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

Robots score third place
Plastic-free challenge
The University of Newcastle’s team of teen robots finished third at the RoboCup soccer world championships in Montreal after a competitive penalty shootout. Standing almost one metre tall, the NUbots was the only Australian squad to compete in the teen division of the humanoid league. The RoboCup aims to develop a team of robots that can win against the human world soccer champion team by 2050. “Australia is making meaningful progress in the area of artificial intelligence and is developing ideas that are influential across the world,” head of the Newcastle Robotics Laboratory, associate professor Stephan Chalup, said. The NUbots team is in training for the 2019 RoboCup in Sydney.
Novocastrians have been challenged to a Plastic Free July by turning their backs on single-use plastic items. Plastic bags, takeaway containers, straws, coffee cups and plastic packaging are all out for Newcastle’s deputy lord mayor Declan Clausen, who has urged the community to join him in his month-long environmental quest. Scientists estimate that, by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans. “This is a shocking statistic, particularly for a coastal city like ours,” councillor Clausen said. Newcastle council has organised a Beating Plastic Pollution Competition, with the most creative entry set to win a prize worth than $150.
Reforms a boost for retirees Hunter retirement village residents will be the big winners under a series of proposed reforms, the state government says. The reforms are based on the outcomes of the recent statewide inquiry into the sector, led by Kathryn Greiner. The package of reforms includes: implementing a mandatory code of conduct, introducing strong transparency measures, improving dispute resolution services, and adding measures to help clarify responsibilities with respect to ongoing maintenance costs. “Hunter residents heading into retirement will benefit significantly from these reforms, which put the power back into their hands,” parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said.
Swim centre’s makeover Lake Macquarie council will splash more than $6 million on an overhaul of Toronto Swim Centre. The major revamp is set to include a new hydrotherapy and spa pool, refurbished amenities, improved air and water quality, and the retiling of all pools. The swim centre will close on Saturday 7 July for about a year. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said the project would provide a much better user experience, with modern facilities for all ages and abilities. “These will include new family change rooms and accessible lifts to all pools,” she said. “We will also be replacing the centre’s filtration and disinfection systems, and its roof with new solar panels and roof insulation.”

A proposal to build Australia’s only dedicated Trampoline Centre of Excellence at Glendale aims to serve as a springboard for the delivery of major events, sports tourism and a suite of innovative community health and fitness programs. The $10 million state-of-the-art centre will boast a 12-metre ceiling height, seating for 450 spectators, audio visual equipment for training purposes and a 1500-squaremetre arena equipped with nine trampolines, two double mini trampolines, two tumbling strips, and a foam pit and warm-up area. Gymnastics NSW chief executive, Aaron Bloomfield, praised the proposal. “The Trampoline Centre of Excellence will be a world-class facility that will enable the development of high-performance trampoline to world championships and Olympic level and will see the sport bring state, national and international events to the area,” he said. The project has also been hailed by Gymnastics Australia chief executive, Kitty Chiller, who believes it will be equal to any venue around the world.
“As the only standalone facility for high-performance trampolining in the country, the Trampoline Centre of Excellence will become the preferred venue for training camps, competition and major events from regional to international level,” Ms Chiller said. “It will also be a hub for community sporting programs. “Trampolining and tumbling are great activities for building strength, agility and timing, and can be incorporated into training for a range of activities that require aerial skills, such as skateboarding, surfing, diving, wakeboarding and skiing.” Lake Macquarie council has applied for $7 million from the state government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund to support the centre’s construction. Mayor Kay Fraser said it would drive sports tourism, boost the visitor economy, and provide firstrate facilities for the community. “We are expecting the centre to generate more than $2.5 million a year in visitor expenditure, which will be a significant boost to regional tourism and will promote our city as a premier sports destination,” she said.
sport Student’s role in Indigenous round Giants Netball will have a special link to Newcastle when the Sydney-based side takes on rivals NSW Swifts in Suncorp Super Netball’s first Indigenous round this weekend. The squad’s specially-designed dress features artwork by Hunter Sports High School student Krystal Dallinger. The 16-year-old, who is of the Kamilaroi Nation of Walgett, Lightning Ridge and Angledool in western NSW, caught the attention of Giants Netball star Sam Poolman last year. Poolman was home in Newcastle for her Aspire Netball program, which she developed for young netballers in the Hunter Region. “Krystal gave me a hat that she painted with Indigenous designs,” Poolman says. “I was taken aback by the thought and how creative it was.”
Giants Netball heard of the gesture and decided to surprise Krystal with an invitation for her to design the artwork for their Indigenous round dress. The artwork reflects the connection that everyone shares and celebrates people coming together as one team under one sky. It also incorporates symbols reflecting Krystal’s family and where she comes from. “To have Krystal design the dress is something that we’re very excited about,” Poolman says. “It’s so important that we recognise and value the contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made. “With netball being such a popular sport, especially in this state, it is really special that we can represent the Indigenous community.”
Newcastle’s Sam Poolman in the specially-made Giants Netball dress for this weekend’s Indigenous round.
Giants Netball will wear the dress with pride during Sunday’s match. The second-placed side heads into the derby on the back of a dominant 63-44 win over Adelaide. NSW Swifts, on the other hand, suffered a 65-58 defeat to Melbourne Vixens. The round 10 match will be played in Sydney at 5pm.
Northstars slide into second The Newcastle Northstars have leapfrogged rivals the Sydney Ice Dogs into second spot on the AIHL table. Newcastle claimed a first outright win against the Ice Dogs this season with a 6-4 victory on Sunday. Richie Tesarik, Rob Haselhurst and Nick Rivait all struck in the first period to put the Northstars up 3-2. Rivait then grabbed his second of the game, before the Ice Dogs levelled it up at 4-all. However, Newcastle import Sam Lawson restored the home side’s lead and Tesarik scored again to finally seal the match. On Friday night, the Northstars faced the same opponents, prevailing in a shootout 3-2. Newcastle will play against Adelaide this Saturday from 5pm, and Melbourne Ice on Sunday from 4pm. Both games are at home.

Macadamia filled pastry roses Recipe courtesy of australian-macadamias.org Serves: 6 Ingredients For the sweet macadamia paste ½ cup macadamias 2 Tbsp raw caster sugar 1 Tbsp egg white, lightly beaten For the pastry roses 2 medium sized red apples, halved and cored 15g butter 2 Tbsp raw caster sugar 2 tsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp water 1 sheet of good quality store-bought puff pastry Icing sugar, to serve
Cream puffs Serves: About 18 Ingredients 120g butter, chopped 250ml (1 cup) water 150g (1 cup) self-raising flour 4 eggs 250ml (1 cup) cream 2 heaped tablespoons icing sugar, plus extra for dusting ½ teaspoon natural vanilla extract
Method Preheat the oven to 220°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Put the butter and water in a large saucepan and bring to the boil over high heat. Remove the saucepan from the heat and sift in the flour, stirring to form a smooth paste. Allow the mixture to cool, then pour into a bowl and add the eggs, one at a time. Beat the mixture for 5 minutes, using an electric mixer on medium speed.
This is an edited extract from Tried Tested and True by Liz Harfull, RRP $39.99, Allen and Unwin.
Place rounded dessert spoonfuls of mixture on the prepared tray, allowing about 5cm between them. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until crisp to the touch and deep golden brown. Set aside on a wire rack to cool. Just before serving, cut the puffs in half. Whip together the cream, icing sugar and vanilla until thick. Spoon or pipe the mixture onto the bottom half of each puff. Replace the top, dust with icing sugar and serve.
LIZ'S TIPS • Check the oven during cooking and turn the tray after about 20 minutes to make sure the puffs cook evenly. Don’t be tempted to open the door before this, because if the puffs are still soft in the middle, they might collapse. • It is easy to undercook these puffs. To double-check they are ready, tap on the bottom – they should sound hollow. Then cut a small slit in one side to check if they are completely dry inside. If not, turn the oven off, wedge open the door and leave them for another few minutes and check again. • Unfilled cream puffs store well in an airtight container. Before serving, simply put them back in the oven for a few minutes to crisp up again. 30
Method For the paste, place the macadamias and sugar in the bowl of a food processor and process until fine. Add the egg white and process to combine. Set aside. Preheat oven to 180ºC. Lay the apple halves flat on a surface and slice as thinly as possible. If you have a mandolin, use this to slice the apples. Place the apples in a microwave-proof bowl and dot with butter. Sprinkle with sugar, lemon
juice and water and gently fold to combine. Microwave on high for 30 seconds, until apples are just tender. Alternatively, place in a saucepan with the butter, sugar, lemon juice and water and simmer for 3-4 minutes, until just tender. Remove the slices from the bowl and place on a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Roll the puff pastry out as thinly as possible and cut crosswise into thick strips approx. 4cm x 25cm. Spread 2 teaspoons of macadamia paste across the middle of each strip. Place individual apple slices rounded side up and slightly overlapping along the top edge of each strip. Fold the bottom edge up toward the top, encasing the bottom of the apple slices. Start from one end and roll the dough into a coil, creating ‘roses’. Press the end to seal. Place individual roses into the holes of a muffin tin and cook for 15-20 minutes, until the pastry is puffed and the apples are just turning golden. Serve sprinkled with icing sugar. Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container.

Speers Point artist Maree Bisby with her latest collection of works at Toronto Library. Photo: Peter Stoop
Artist’s journey of self-discovery Maree Bisby’s search for self-identity awoke the burgeoning artist within her, elevating her work to powerful new heights. For a long time, the Speers Point woman’s Indigenous heritage was kept secret. “I was raised as Maori,” Maree told Newcastle Weekly. “But I have always painted like this, and never understood why. “Now I know I was being guided.” With some of Maree’s family identifying as Indigenous and others not, digging up the family
tree raised more questions than it answered. Finally, using newspaper articles, she and her family traced their ancestry back to the Wiradjuri tribe in central New South Wales. They then obtained Proof of Aboriginality documentation, which was a huge step in the journey of self-discovery for Maree, both as an artist and as an individual. “I now feel confident in putting my work out there and being acknowledged as an Indigenous artist,” she said. “For me, it was really important to get that
piece of paper. I grew up not knowing [who I was] but now I can say, ‘This is who I am’.” Maree first put her artworks on public display last year, during NAIDOC Week, as part of John Hunter Hospital’s annual celebratory exhibition. It was so successful that the hospital has asked her to return for a solo exhibition in November. But before then, Maree’s latest collection of works, titled Ngaa-bun-gaa-nha – SEARCHING, is on display at Toronto Library until August. She has also donated an artwork to the Westlakes NAIDOC Family Fun Day at Toronto Foreshore on Tuesday 10 July, which one lucky person will win. With a background in early childhood education, Maree believes it is vital to continue sharing, promoting and fostering Aboriginal language, arts and culture. “If we don’t, we risk losing these practices, which is what they wanted in the first place; to stamp out Aboriginality,” she said. NAIDOC Week runs from 8 to 15 July, and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You can meet Maree in person at an art workshop at Toronto Library from 10am on Wednesday 11 July. It is free to join. - Georgia Osland

Creativity’s a universal language From humble beginnings, a local business that offers creative workshops in cartooning and animation has gone global. Raymond Terrace-based Toonworld was given the unique opportunity to attend the Sharjah International Reading Festival in the United Arab Emirates to showcase its operations. It’s a far cry from the small operation started by Mike Wheeler and Claudio Gomez Vega on a home computer in a Mayfield
lounge room. Mike said the experience of working with children from a range of cultures was invaluable. “Creative drawing has a universal language, and we realised that we had something to offer the kids of the world,” he said. “The festival organisers found us online and it didn’t take long for us to accept their invitation. “It’s not every day you get asked to present your product on the world stage.
“We were not sure what to expect but we need not have worried. The experience was out-of-this-world, with a constant line-up of kids wanting a taste of the Toonworld sessions.” Mike said that he hoped Toonworld would be invited back for an even bigger world book fair in November. Visit toonworld.com.au to learn more, or to book Toonworld’s school holidays workshops at The Creator Incubator.

Why Replace It? Raise It! IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
perplex many gardeners. but there is a simple approach: if you didn’t prune in summer, don’t cut back the stems that haven’t flowered. Hydrangeas should be pruned back to stems, where there are two eyes starting to shoot. Remember, when fertilising hydrangeas, that flower colour can be affected by the alkalinity or acidity of the fertiliser. Cow manure will encourage deeper colours, whereas poultry will increase alkalinity, creating shades of pinks. In frost-prone areas, hose plants before the morning sun rises. Deciduous fruit trees can be prone to leaf curl. Spray with copper oxychloride at the end of July and beginning of August.

Fellow gardeners: it would be nice to think we could sit inside; warm, reading a book. Sorry, July is pruning time, meaning lots of elbow grease getting the garden ready for spring. But don’t be overzealous; hold back the chainsaw, and hesitate before cutting – what comes off, can’t be glued back on. Though a range of plants can be pruned now, care should be taken not to prune spring-flowering deciduous trees and shrubs. It is an ideal time to prune crepe myrtle, which should never be cut back to last year’s pruning nodes; each year pruning above last year. Grape vines, fuschia, plumbago, viburnum and westringia will respond to winter pruning. As there is likely a couple of months left of cold weather, I would hold back on pruning murrayas and particularly golden durantas, as the top growth could blacken. Hydrangea pruning seems to

PICK OF THE WEEK Superbad Friday, GO!, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2007) School’s out for best buddies Seth and Evan (Jonah Hill, pictured, and Michael Cera) and it’s the last chance for the two co-dependent geeks to get laid before their far-hotter classmates disappear to college. Naturally, they embark on an epic quest for booze with the sole intention of becoming some misfortunate girl’s drunken indiscretion. Meanwhile, their mate Fogell (Christopher MintzPlasse) is on a mission of his own with a pair of clueless cops (Bill Hader and co-writer Seth Rogen) and a fake ID in the name of “McLovin”.
Friday
Ant-Man
Nightcrawler Saturday, SBS VLND, 8.30pm, M (2014) Media ethics are placed under the microscope in a compelling drama. Jake Gyllenhaal (pictured) delivers a career-best performance as scuzzy and immoral loner Louis Bloom, who chances upon a career as an ambulance-chasing freelance TV news cameraman, and finds his complete lack of empathy is an asset in his new field. Rene Russo plays Nina, a producer who cynically uses Louis’ footage to create fear. Dan Gilroy’s Oscar-nominated screenplay expertly captures how the 24-hour news cycle operates.
Monday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, PG (2015) After the exit of former director Edgar Wright, the next evolution of the Marvel Universe is here with Ant-Man. Armed with the ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd, pictured) must use his inner hero to help Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) protect the secret behind his spectacular AntMan suit from a new generation of towering threats. The pair must also pull off a dangerous heist to – of course – save the world. Led by a charming performance from Rudd, this Marvel thriller is refreshingly simple, smooth and lots of family-friendly fun.

INTRODUCING MILEY
Our gorgeous Miley has been waiting for so long to find her perfect forever home. Could Miley be the girl of your dreams you’ve been waiting for? Miley has come along in leaps and bounds since she first came into foster care. She is now one of our star greyounds who loves attending the Friends of the Hound promotional days. She has met all dogs great and small and of course loves the attention, pats and cuddles she recieves from her admirers on the day. At home Miley has a funny quirky nature, loves a game with the other greys and gets so excited when her foster mum arrives home from work.
NW0276-V14
She would love a home with another canine friend but does get a little too excited about kitties, so best a home with no cats. Miley is currently in foster care with other greyhounds, and an elderly kelpie.
URGENT
To find out more about this cheeky girl please contact Janette at Friends of the Hound 0438551576 Foster carers urgently needed. You get support and you don’t pay vet or food bills. Contact Janette on 0438 551 576

Even if surrounded by friends and family during the year ahead, Sofia may feel quite alone. She will need to centre her energies and will on herself. Decisions will need to be made that will determine her course of action for several years to come. Sofia will discover new ways of looking at old problems, shedding them and going forward in a new direction. Defeat is not a word that she will be prepared to accept.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
With the Sun in Cancer occupying the family and property areas of life, you can certainly expect a great deal more activity on the home front and a steady stream of visitors. This is the ideal time to sort out any issues connected with younger members of your family.
It’s vital that you push ahead with everything that is important to you. Your confidence will be soaring and it’s a particularly lucky period for the self-employed or freelancers. Others may accuse you of selfishness, but you need to take advantage of this period.
Push ahead with everything that is important to you as you are bound to succeed, especially on a professional front. You will be devoting more time than usual to your career; you could become something of a workaholic so don’t be surprised if loved ones begin to protest.
The Sun is in your opposite sign of Cancer and you begin a few weeks of positive cooperation with people. It’s a time when you should try to learn how to share, not only your possessions, but your thoughts and your feelings too.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22 It’s an ideal time for travelling or organising holiday plans; you’re bound to have a good time. For other Scorpios it’s a great time for dealing with foreign affairs, legal matters or higher education. New people you meet are likely to come from very different backgrounds to you.
The planets are energising your workforce where there’s a certain amount of stress which could result in much debate and even heated argument. The best thing to do is ensure you don’t become involved; you have issues of your own without becoming enmeshed in those of others.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
This is the ideal time for dealing with banks, large organisations, the tax office, insurance companies or officials in general. This is a time of facing the music rather than dodging the issue. Get matters in these areas resolved so that you can breathe more easily.
The Sun is in the watery sign of Cancer and you begin a month where enjoyment, socialising and romance take top priority. This is certainly the time for reaching out into life and it is important to take advantage of all opportunities that are presented to enjoy yourself.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 Over the next few weeks you will be doing a good deal more running around than is usually the case. There is an adventurous feel about the planets and you won’t be prepared to sit around for long. You will certainly be making contact with friends and relatives
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Sorting out the cash side of your life is occupying a great deal of your time. You want more security for the long-term and some indulgences instantly but the two aren’t really compatible. Try not to be so contradictory, otherwise you will never get the books to balance.
Over the next few weeks, rest and relaxation are especially important. It’s also a time when you’re more prepared to move out of the limelight and play the game of life from a distance or behind the scenes. Your instincts are strong so back them to the hilt.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 It looks as if you are in for a very sociable couple of weeks. Recently your objectives in life may have been a little woolly but now the way ahead seems a good deal clearer and you know exactly what you want from life in all areas.

TRAVEL I was very fortunate in working for IBM for most of my life and, prior to retiring, had an Asia Pacific role. It offered the opportunity to visit many parts of the world, and that interest has not wavered. My next trip is to India in September.
My favourite things HEAVEN CAN WAIT CHARITY REGATTA This is what occupies most of my time and gives me the greatest satisfaction – organising an event that makes a difference to people’s lives – because it’s the right thing to do.
COOKING
Mel Steiner
I do like cooking – probably handed down from my mother, who was an excellent cook. But I don’t like cooking because I have to; I like to cook to entertain.
HEAVEN CAN WAIT (HCW) RACE DIRECTOR
Mel Steiner is passionate about sailing and has used that interest to raise funds for local charities and support community activities, both on and around Lake Macquarie. He is race director for Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta – a fundraising event mostly in support of the Hunter branch of Cancer Council NSW, with a smaller amount going to Lake Macquarie Marine Rescue. He is also chairperson of the committee that organises Lakefest – a celebration of aquatic activity on Lake Macquarie, which brings together local clubs and charities. Mel is working with other community groups to prevent the construction of a residential high-rise on what he argues is essentially scarce Toronto Foreshore land. 58
PROMOTING LAKE MACQUARIE I love the opportunity to work with the Lions club, which brings international students to Australia as part of its Camp Kookaburra program. They spend a day sailing at RMYC Toronto, as well as with Lake Macquarie council, which runs a Try Sailing program with RMYC Toronto as a part of its annual outdoors program.
SAILING I have been sailing since my late teens – initially learning to sail in 16’ skiffs out of St George Sailing Club on Botany Bay. Nowadays, I spend two days a week racing with the Royal Motor Yacht Club at Toronto.
