This week... From the editor I was walking around Newcastle CBD late one night recently with a friend, when a chilling reality dawned on me. I’ve always felt this way, but with recent media coverage on the alleged rape and murder of 22-year-old Melbourne woman Eurydice Dixon, it was at the forefront of my mind. As roadworks forced us to cut through Pacific Park in the East End on our way to a bar, I suddenly felt unsafe in the dimly-lit public thoroughfare. I had this thought again, on a different day, on my way to the gym – this time in the early hours of the morning. I stand with the outraged Melbourne community and indeed, those around the country and the world who are mortified by Eurydice’s horrific death, just a few hundred metres from her home, in a public place. I stand with those who say the onus is on the perpetrator (usually, but not always, men) – not the victim – to refrain from committing harm in the first place. I stand with fellow infuriated women who, like me, were taught to carry keys in their hands, to call a friend when walking alone at night, and who have almost certainly felt like they were being followed at some point. As women, we are sick of taking responsibility for other people’s actions. - Georgia Osland

news Wetlands’ plans for exciting future Hunter Wetlands Centre chief executive Ken Bayliss says it’s “exciting times” as the wildlife haven bids to safeguard its long-term future. Financial strain has forced the centre to review its business model, which Mr Bayliss believes will show “where we want to be in five, 10, 20 years’ time”. A $146,820 grant from the state government, announced this month, will also see modern technology installed in the Max Maddock Visitors Centre at Shortland. “It is exciting times with a business review and an upgrade of the visitors centre; hopefully it’ll turn things around for us,” Mr Bayliss says. “[The wetlands] is one of the greatest spots in Newcastle – all the ponds are totally full and it looks lovely and green right now.” Mr Bayliss says an upgrade of the visitors centre will provide a better first impression. About 30,000 people visit the wetlands each year, including roughly 7,000 students. “There’s very old technology [at the visitors centre] and, even though they tried to bring in monitors to show different pictures around the

wetlands, whenever you walk in, it’s still very dated,” he says. “We want people to walk in and get that ‘wow’ factor straight away.” The community-owned centre’s business review seeks to ensure it continues to operate in the face of falling income and increasing expenses, without relying on government grants. “Every dollar we make we’ve got to generate ourselves or apply for a grant, and everyone else out there is applying for the same grant,” Mr Bayliss says. “It’s extremely competitive – there are hundreds and hundreds of organisations that require funding and all are as important as each other. “Money has got to come from somewhere.” The centre will now host an interactive exhibition, titled Evolving Wetlands, during the school holidays. It will showcase a unique collection of dinosaur fossils and replicas, with a focus on prehistoric creatures known to inhabit ancient wetlands. Children can set off for a game of Dino Spy to find as many dinosaurs as possible, while there

will also be a special dinosaur-themed meal at the cafe. Mr Bayliss praised the centre’s volunteers for their ongoing dedication. “You just could not wish for a more wonderful bunch of volunteers at the wetlands – without them, the whole place would just die,” he says. The Evolving Wetlands exhibition will take place from 7 to 21 July, 9.30am to 1.30pm. Visit wetlands.org.au for more information or to buy tickets. - Ben Murphy

news Stockton tops endangered list Stockton Beach has topped an endangered list formed by a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting Australia’s waves and beaches. The Surfrider Foundation movement started more than 30 years ago when three passionate surfers in Malibu, California, discovered their favourite wave was about to be destroyed. It has since spread to 18 countries around the world. The foundation’s Endangered Waves program aims to highlight the many threats to Australia’s most unique and fragile surfing and coastal environments. Its endangered list includes criteria such as coastal developments, accessibility or overcrowding, polluted water, visual amenity, ecosystem threats, and climate change.

Stockton Community Liaison Group (CLG) representative Simon Jones says the list is a “positive” amid the struggle to fix the beach’s ongoing erosion problems. “It’s something positive for Stockton – it kind of sucks to be on top of the list, but it adds credibility to what we’re doing,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “This shows that it’s not just the Stockton community jumping up and down; it is a fairly widespread consensus.” The Stockton CLG was formed by Newcastle council earlier this year to provide community feedback and participate in discussions during the planning phase of the coastal zone management plan for Stockton. The draft plan is on public exhibition until close of business today.

It will then be finalised and sent to the state government’s Office of Environment and Heritage, which has helped to develop a new coastal management framework. Mr Jones says he is disappointed about a lack of immediate action. “The CLG was wishing for beach nourishment and considered that to be a short-to-medium term solution,” he says. “But that was considered not viable – in order to get [the plan] through by October, there wasn’t enough time to do relevant studies.

“There’s nothing to address the immediate erosion and it doesn’t guarantee funding. “The coastal zone plan should’ve been certified years ago, rather than leaving it to the last minute and being stuck with a fairly inadequate plan.” Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp tabled a Save Stockton Beach petition in parliament this week after it reached 10,000 signatures. The petition is expected to be debated in August.

news State budget’s hits and misses A Hillsborough resident has described a lack of funds in this year’s NSW Budget to fix the suburb’s dangerous main thoroughfare as “ridiculous”. Despite ongoing community concern, the state government last week opted not to include road upgrades that were recommended in the draft Lake Macquarie Transport Study. The study had identified the Hillsborough Road and Chadwick Street intersection as a short-term priority for traffic signals. “I think what it will take is for someone to be in a serious accident for them to do something,” resident Michelle Muddle says. “People are taking risks with their cars that they really shouldn’t be taking and they’re doing that because of the [traffic] waiting times. “To make it worse, you’ve got the dog showground, where people aren’t abiding by the signs not to turn right, and a bus stop that’s so unsafe to try and get across to the other side of Hillsborough Road. “The safety factor is paramount and [the government] just aren’t putting the safety of residents here on the map at all.”

Also notably absent from the budget was the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange at Glendale, which received no major funding. Despite these setbacks for Lake Macquarie, several other projects in the area did make the cut, including the Service NSW office at Toronto and the installation of lifts at Wyee railway station. Funding has also been allocated for upgrades at Wangi Wangi and Speers Point public schools, and $1.5 million will bolster the next stage of work on the Wyee sewer connection scheme. The government will also support the rejuvenation of Rathmines Hall, Speers Point multiarts hub, and the expansion of the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, while $13.7 million will help plan the Fassifern-Hexham freight rail corridor. Elsewhere in the Hunter, $23.5 million is going towards the new $470 million Maitland Hospital; the Newcastle light rail project will be handed $110 million; and $8.3 million has been allocated for a $70 million upgrade of Nelson Bay Road. There’s also $14.5 million for the planning and preconstruction of stage five of the innercity bypass from Rankin Park to Jesmond; $4.3

million to continue planning for an M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace; funds for a new $13.5 million police station at Cessnock; $7.1 million over four years for a coastal walk at Tomaree; $5 million to finalise the Tourle StreetCormorant Road upgrade; and $9.3 million for the continuing upgrade of Hunter Sports High School. - Ben Murphy

news Projects honour city’s diverse fabric The stories will tell of the tragedies, triumphs and challenges faced by female convicts in Australia. Maitland & Beyond Family History has joined a project that pays tribute to more than 25,000 convict women who arrived from Britain and Ireland between 1788 and 1853. The Roses From The Heart project involves making cloth bonnets, similar to those worn at the time, as well as conducting research, in order to commemorate the convicts’ contribution towards the founding of a new nation. Maitland & Beyond Family History’s publicity officer, Vicki Osborn, called for the community’s support. “We’re going around to nursing homes, embroidery clubs, Lions clubs and places like that to see if we can get people interested in it,” she said. “Rather than it be just a Maitland and beyond [group] project, I’d like to involve the whole community. “So, we are going to approach the men’s shed to see if they can make some stands to

put the bonnets on and I’ve been out to Tocal Homestead, where, in a week or two, we’ll put on a little display.” Ms Osborn said there would also be a display at Tocal’s Peek into the Past next month, as well as the Maitland 200 Years event. So far, about 20 community groups have signed up for the Maitland 200 Years celebrations, which will include Aboriginal face painting and dance, puppetry, food and history stalls, bands, and a barbecue, on 16 September. Another project, Maitland Is My Home, will also be a cornerstone of the festivities. Maitland Regional Museum representative, Helen Hopcroft, said the exhibition would celebrate the city’s diverse population. “Other than the First Nations people, Maitland has been formed by waves of migration over the years,” she said. “We really want to put together an exhibition that talks about the many different places that people come from when they arrive in Maitland, as well as the people that have always called Maitland home,” she said.

“The central theme is how they feel connected to this place and what makes Maitland special to them.” Contact the Maitland Regional Museum via hhopcroft@hotmail.com or Maitland & Beyond Family History through mdgs01@tpg.com.au if you’d like to be involved. - Ben Murphy

Two key Aboriginal organisations in Newcastle have banded together to create positive change for local people. The Aboriginal Employment Strategy (AES) and Awabakal aim to improve mental and physical health for Aboriginals in the region and generate job opportunities. The partnership has been driven by an AES initiative to work with more Aboriginal businesses and organisations around the country. It’s already led to 35 placements of Aboriginal people at Awabakal since November 2016. One of the partnership’s major success stories so far is Aaron Simon. The 27-year-old was recruited as one of two community liaison workers at Awabakal – his first full-time job. After nine months in the role, Aaron has now joined the Tackling Indigenous Smoking team and is also about to complete a Certificate IV in Mental Health. “When I went to the AES, I was desperate for any work at the time,” Aaron says. “I didn’t have any experience working in health, but the opportunity at Awabakal came up and I thought I’d give it a shot and it’s been great for me. “I see a lot of unemployed people out where I live, and a partnership like this creates opportunities for people in the community who are wanting to get a start in life.” Founded in Newcastle in 1977, Awabakal delivers culturallyappropriate primary healthcare services, as well as advocacy and social and emotional support to Aboriginal people. The community-controlled service offers opportunities

across a wide range of sectors, including medical, transport, aged care, early childhood, and mental health. It is the largest employer of Aboriginal people from the local area, with about 100 Aboriginal staff currently employed. Chief executive Raylene Gordon says the partnership with AES allows it to recruit through an organisation that boasts extensive contacts and a proven record of mentoring and preparing people for work. “Not only are we supporting another Aboriginal organisation, we’ve [also] gained great employees who have a passion for working in this sector, and that can be hard to find,” she says. The AES’ employment and mentoring services are supported by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. - Ben Murphy

Last stand to protect species

Food insecurity on the front line Organisations working on the front line to help foodinsecure communities have noticed a trend in the types of people seeking a hand up. “The trend is, there isn’t one,” BaptistCare HopeStreet Newcastle manager Craig Budden tells Newcastle Weekly. “No longer is it the stereotypical group seeking help. Certainly, we still see a lot of people who are on Centrelink payments, but if you could name any trend, it’s a rise in the working poor – those who can’t keep up with the cost of living. “So many people are only weeks away from homelessness; any one of us could fall behind within a couple of paycheques.” In the past year, Foodbank has supplied 169,413 kilograms of food to Newcastle organisations to distribute to those in need. BaptistCare is one of those organisations. It operates three HopeStreet centres at Wallsend, Windale and Mayfield. The Wallsend and Windale centres both have lowcost grocery stores, while all three provide free meals, emergency food packs and a drop-in service.

A HopeStreet client receives food at BaptistCare’s Mayfield centre.

Mr Budden says in the past few months alone, the centres have noticed a 36% increase in the number of people buying low-cost groceries, while the percentage of people seeking emergency relief has also jumped. Foodbank supplies most of the food, but Mr Budden says they’re always in need of monetary donations. “We’d never turn anyone away, but [a lack of funding] means what we have doesn’t go as far.” To find out more, visit hopestreet.org.au - Georgia Osland

A six-year project to protect threatened species in Coal Point wraps up this weekend. The $250,000 Threatened Species Last Stand on the Coal Point Peninsula project will culminate in an Art and Craft Show. “It’s a wonderful way to bring everyone together and acknowledge what we’ve achieved over the past six years,” Coal Point Progress Association president, Suzanne Pritchard, says. “We’re celebrating an amazing project that’s contributed to a greater understanding and protection of the threatened species in our area.” The show’s opening night is on Friday 29 June from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Many artists will be present to discuss their work, which is all for sale. The show continues on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm and 10am to 2pm respectively, at Progress Hall, Coal Point.

Vice-chancellor position filled

Volunteers’ valuable skills “I’m studying to become a teacher and planning to undertake humanitarian aid volunteering next year, so I jumped at the opportunity to complete my first aid certificate.” Camp Quality was thrilled with the feedback after the training. More than 95% of volunteers stated they had increased confidence to provide an initial response in an emergency. Chief executive Kylea Tink said she was excited about the chance to ensure the charity’s volunteers were the best in class when it came to safety. She added children impacted by cancer should be offered every opportunity to thrive. “Upskilling our volunteers this year will be invaluable for the future of Camp Quality’s innovative programs and ensuring our volunteers are confident and highly

trained to keep kids and families safe,” she said. “This kind of training will also have a flow-on effect in local communities, with new skills transferable to other organisations, sporting clubs, and workplaces.” - Ben Murphy

The University of Newcastle has announced its next vice-chancellor and president. Dr Alex Zelinsky AO will replace professor Caroline McMillen, who is set to complete her term on 4 November. Dr Zelinsky has held the position of Australia’s chief defence scientist since March 2012. “The University of Newcastle is a leader in equity, Indigenous education, research and innovation and has risen strongly in key university rankings in a very competitive global environment,” chancellor Paul Jeans said. “We’re confident that Dr Zelinsky will continue the university’s successful trajectory in all of these areas and further accelerate our position as a local and global asset.” Dr Zelinsky will be the university’s eighth vice-chancellor.

Camp Quality volunteers have been trained in emergency response to increase the safety of cancer-stricken children and their families at the charity’s events. An $11,000 grant from the nib foundation enabled 44 volunteers in NSW and the ACT to undertake first aid and CPR training, while a further 20 participants completed their bronze medallion and lifeguard courses. Newcastle-based volunteer Lucy Youngberry said the first aid certificate, which she completed at St John Ambulance in Adamstown, would be extremely beneficial. “I love volunteering with Camp Quality and supporting children impacted by cancer at kids’ camps and family events,” she said. “The training was comprehensive, but we all had a great day, roleplaying and learning together.

How do you communicate your love? Q Sometimes I feel my partner and I don’t really understand each other. Although we do talk about our feelings and we have shared goals, I feel he doesn’t show me love the way I want him to. I think I am more romantic about expressing my love for him but he tells me he shows me he loves me by doing things for me – such as cooking and doing a lot around the house. I really appreciate these things about him but I don’t associate those actions with romance. To me, they are just a normal part of a relationship. I’m worried that we just don’t see love or romance the same way and I’m not sure how to make him understand me more. What can I do? Q You and your partner do seem to be on the same page about many things in life – like you said, you are open with how you both feel and you have shared goals for the future. But not all couples are on the same page about how to express love for each other. This is not due to lack of love or care though. Often, the way we show love to our partner is the way we want to receive love from our partner. However, this does not mean that our partner likes to receive love in the same way we do. This is something that we don’t often talk about in relationships and now is a good time for you and your partner to explore this together. The conversation doesn’t have to be about what is missing. The conversation is an opportunity to learn more about each other and how to better meet each other’s needs. The way we prefer to receive love is what we might call our love language. I’d like to introduce you to the Five Love Languages, developed by Dr Gary Chapman. According to Dr Chapman, learning to express love in your partner’s language can transform your relationship. You and your partner do not have to have the same love language. What is important is that you figure out what your own love language preferences are, share this knowledge with each other and find ways to meet the needs of your partner, based on their main love language/s. According to Dr Chapman, the five languages of love are:

1. Words of affirmation: This language uses words to affirm other people. This may be verbal reminders of your love for each other, sweet text messages, love letters, praise and encouragement for each other.

Tanya Russell, Assistant Director/Psychologist at CatholicCare Social Services, Hunter-Manning.

2. ‘Acts of service: For these people, actions speak louder than words. Clearly, for your partner, he likes to show you he loves you by doing things for you. It can be small or big gestures that demonstrate this.

3. Receiving gifts: For some people, what makes them feel most loved is to receive a gift. It doesn’t mean the gift is an expensive one; it could just be a small token as a symbol of love to show that someone is thinking of you.

4. Quality time: This language is all about giving the other person your undivided attention.

5. Physical touch: To this person, nothing speaks more deeply than appropriate touch. Knowing and talking about your love language is only the first step. It is also then important to discuss what that physically looks like for you. For example, if your preferred love language is quality time, what does that mean? Sitting together on the lounge watching TV together? Going for walks together or going on holidays? Be really specific about how you would feel loved. I suggest you and your partner take the Love Languages quiz and also consider reading the books by Dr Chapman. Further information is available at www.5lovelanguages.com

sport Simmons named top rookie Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons has claimed Rookie of the Year at the annual NBA Awards Show in California this week. Simmons, who was raised in the Hunter before moving to the USA, faced stiff competition from Utah’s Donovan Mitchell and Boston’s Jayson Tatum. After missing his draft year through injury, Simmons helped lead the 76ers to 52 wins in the regular season, notching 12 tripledoubles – the second highest total by an NBA rookie – in the process. Philadelphia eventually went down to Boston 4-1 in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. This season’s Rookie of the Year race divided experts and fans. Debate raged over whether Simmons was a true rookie amid claims of a perceived advantage because he had already spent

Ponga stars but Blues win series Whiz-kid Kalyn Ponga starred in his State of Origin debut for Queensland, but NSW sealed the series with a courageous 18-14 win at ANZ Stadium on Sunday. Ponga played 53 minutes and made 30 tackles after being used as a bench utility. He almost drew the Maroons level in the 68th minute with a trademark burst through NSW’s defensive line. However, the 20-year-old was run down by James Tedesco and Josh Addo-Carr just metres from the line. NSW went on to win the game and took an unassailable 2-0 series lead. Game three will be played on Wednesday 11 July at Suncorp Stadium.

a season with the 76ers while recovering from his foot injury. Houston’s James Harden took out the MVP (Most Valuable Player) award ahead of Cleveland superstar LeBron James and New Orleans’ Anthony Davis. Harden became the fourth player to average at least 30 points per game and lead his team to 65 wins.

Captain Bert Malloy grabbed the winner on Sunday as Newcastle edged Melbourne Ice 3-2 at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. After a slow start, the Northstars’ newest import, Canadian Sammy Banga, was the first on the scoreboard. The Ice responded twice to draw level before Malloy popped up to hand the home side a 3-2 lead, which they did not relinquish. On Saturday, Perth Thunder snatched a 4-3 win in a shootout. Banga had an outstanding debut for Newcastle, providing an assist on Rob Haselhurst’s goal and then scoring his first AIHL goal. Newcastle will face Sydney Ice Dogs at home on Friday 29 June from 7.30pm.

Veggie risotto

This is an edited extract from The Nourishing Cook by Leah Itsines, RRP $34.99, Macmillan Australia. Photography by Jeremy Simons. Out now. Cook time: 30 mins

Ingredients

Method

1.5 litres (6 cups) vegetable stock

Pour the stock into a saucepan, place over low heat and bring to a simmer. Leave the stock simmering on low.

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, diced 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley, plus extra to serve 2 garlic cloves, crushed ¼ teaspoon chilli flakes 5 button mushrooms, cleaned and quartered 155g butternut pumpkin, peeled and deseeded, chopped into bite-sized pieces 1 zucchini, cut into rounds 150g (1 cup) cherry tomatoes 60g (1 cup) broccoli florets 440g (2 cups) arborio rice 125ml (½ cup) white wine (such as pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc) 100g (1 cup) grated parmesan, plus extra to serve salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add the onion, parsley, garlic and chilli flakes and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes, or until the onion is softened. Add the mushrooms, pumpkin, zucchini, cherry tomatoes and broccoli and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the rice, white wine and 250ml (1 cup) of simmering stock to the pan, reduce the heat to medium and give everything a good stir. Continue to stir until the liquid is absorbed, then add another cup of stock. Repeat this process. When you have added 3 cups of stock, return the vegetable mixture to the pan. Continue stirring and adding the stock, ensuring each cup is absorbed before pouring in the next.

Queen’s homecoming Leading man David Harris says he’s honoured to be part of Priscilla Queen of the Desert’s Australian homecoming. The Maitland native, who now calls the Big Apple home, joined the critically-acclaimed musical at the end of its season in Melbourne late last year. Harris plays the role of Tick in what is widely hailed as one of Australia’s funniest and most successful homegrown musicals, which is currently showing at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on its 10th anniversary tour. The hit production returns after

a rollicking around-the-world tour, which included award-winning stints on Broadway and London’s West End, plus tours of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore (to name a few). It wraps up in Sydney on 21 July, before travelling to Adelaide and Brisbane for the first time. “It’s been great,” Harris tells Newcastle Weekly. “It’s nice to be part of the homecoming of the show. I remember when I saw it 12 years ago, I was [performing] in Miss Saigon at the time; it was magical, and straight away I was eyeing off

David Harris as Mitzi (Tick’s stage persona), Tony Sheldon as Bernadette, and Euan Doidge as Felicia in Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

the role [of Tick].” The 2018 Helpmann awardnominated actor is no stranger to the stage. He’s toured Australia and the world in starring roles in a spate of productions such as Legally Blonde, Wicked, Les Misérables, and The Boy from Oz. Harris’ ultimate goal is to originate his own character in New York, but for now, he’s content exploring Tick (and his drag stage persona, Mitzi) in Simon Phillips’

quintessentially Aussie story about mateship, self-discovery and acceptance. Priscilla Queen of the Desert is based on the Oscar-winning Australian film of the same name, and follows the journey of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus in Sydney, bound for Alice Springs, to put on the show of a lifetime. Phil Jamieson, Josh Pyke, Chris Cheney and Tim Rogers perform The White Album Concert.

Quartet honours The Beatles When an album was never performed live by its original composers, it’s hard to know if you’re doing it justice. But indie artist Josh Pyke is confident he and Phil Jamieson, Chris Cheney and Tim Rogers have honoured The Beatles’ unofficially-named White Album. Recorded after the iconic English rock band’s final fulllength concert in August 1966, the

sprawling 1968 double set contains such songs as Back in the U.S.S.R, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Good Night. And, with a nod to the album’s 50th anniversary, Pyke, Jamieson (Grinspoon), Cheney (The Living End) and Rogers (You Am I), will hit the road next month to perform the album in its entirety, in track order, in The White Album Concert.

After two sold-out tours in 2009 and 2014, the four musicians have familiarised themselves with the album. “As a kid, I was always more of a Sgt. Pepper’s [Lonely Hearts Club] fan, and I hadn’t spent too much time with this album until 2009, but it really grew on me, and now I have a new appreciation of it,” Pyke told Newcastle Weekly. This year’s show includes an extra set of songs not featured on the White Album, which Pyke said added a new dynamic. “It’s a bit more intimate and stripped back than the rest of the show, which is quite bombastic,” he said. The quartet is backed by a live, 17-piece rock orchestra. Catch The White Album Concert at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre on 17 July at 8pm. Go to whitealbumconcert.com to buy tickets. - Georgia Osland

More than an art gallery It’s approaching 10 fruitful, creativity-filled years since Art Systems Wickham threw open its doors to the community. In that time, the gallery has hosted 140 exhibitions and more than 800 artists. Sixty-eight artists have presented solo exhibitions, like current artist Dan Nelson, often returning every two or three years with new work. Nelson’s exhibition Another Skin, on display now until Sunday 8 July, is her first solo installation in

more than two years. It brings together more than 30 paintings and drawings completed over the past 18 months. The works stem from a series of sketches made at Black Bulga, at a time when the seasons were changing. “Pieces of bark had fallen from the trees in shards, revealing the trails of insects against the fresh trunks, while the older layers held fast in greying patches, scratched by resident goannas and possums,” Nelson says.

“I felt a strong affinity between this scene and my own process of image making. “I tend to work in sequences, painting on several surfaces at once. Together, the works form a sort of cinema of mood, weather, light and season.” This year, during the gallery’s 10th anniversary, 14 of the 19 exhibition dates are filled by female artists, which director Colin Lawson says underlines the strength and contribution by women to the fine arts in the local region. Showcase highlights textile waste Recycled fashion was the overriding theme of the Hunter Institute of Fashion’s end-of-course showcase at 48 Watt Street in the heart of Newcastle. The Islington-based institute partnered with Lifeline Hunter Central Coast to draw attention to textile waste in the fashion industry. Six graduating students each designed a one-off couture piece from secondhand clothing, as well as a styled outfit, which were then modelled in a runway show. “As soon as Gabe [Robinson, HIoF director] said “couture”, I knew I was in my element,” graduating student, Mady Kembrey, told Newcastle Weekly. “Couture is my main design strength and passion. “My piece was made from curtains, old pants and a winter coat.” With each student required to visit local Lifeline stores to source their materials and inspiration, Mady said she had learned a lot about sustainable fashion and about Lifeline as an organisation. “Sustainable fashion, to me, means fashion that is somewhat kinder to the earth,” she said. “It’s so easy to just go and buy a cheap $5 T-shirt from Kmart, but, as we all learned during this collaboration with Lifeline, the stress that one T-shirt puts on the environment is absolutely detrimental. “I was so shocked to learn that the textile industry

Models show off graduating Hunter Institute of Fashion students’ pieces. Photo: Lazy Bones

is the second-largest contributor of waste, next to oil. “I have never been an op-shopper personally, but I have definitely changed my mindset after finding so many cool vintage and trendy pieces within Lifeline stores.” Mady is now eyeing off fashion design courses at Parsons Design School New York and Central Saint Marks in London in 2019. - Georgia Osland

Try DIY painting Painting is a key part of any renovation. It can refresh an entire room and bring a welcome change to your home – but only if done properly. According to Wattyl Australia, renters and millennials, in particular, are turning to DIY painting as a quick and affordable way to update their space. “For under $50 and two or three hours of your time you can totally change the colour of a main wall – and therefore change the look of the entire space,” Wattyl’s colour and communications manager, Sarah Stephenson, says. The most important factor for DIY painters is the finish: it must be smooth and show no brush marks. Wattyl shares its five top DIY painting tips: • To ensure that any wall touch-ups are not obvious, even the patch before painting, then apply undercoat followed by the finishing colour.

• Always check your colour before starting. Apply a few coats to a piece of cardboard and place it in the room to view and check the colour in different light. • Flaking and cracked areas of paint must be completely removed before sanding edges of the area to feather in new product: clean the surface thoroughly, allow it to dry, then apply an undercoat before painting. • After applying the first coat, check there is enough paint to finish the job. If not, purchase more paint and mix it with the initial batch to ensure colour consistency before continuing with the job. • Today’s water-based enamels or acrylic enamels do not yellow, so your enamel-painted doors and trims won’t yellow over time. They also dry faster and the brushes wash up in water. Paint isn’t just for the walls, either! For a more cost-effective way to renovate your bathroom or kitchen, consider using a hard-wearing paint designed to be applied over a variety of surfaces including ceramic, white goods and laminate. White Knight has released a kitchen and bathroom range with tile, laminate and tub and basin paint. These paints are tintable to the colour of your choice, quick drying and easy to apply – ideal for first-time renovators.

in the garden

On a recent lovely winter’s day – rain over, sun shining – I was strolling through my garden. The Sasanqua camellias had dropped their flowers, creating a beautiful carpet of pink and white underneath my Elina roses. Stopped in my tracks, I noticed the roses had begun shooting. This was surprising, considering the extreme cold weather we’ve been experiencing. Roses enjoy a dormant period during winter and I generally say don’t prune too early, especially in the frosty areas when August is more suitable, but looking at my lovely new buds forming, the plants know best and I will start this week. Rose pruning is an art, developed through generations; watching my father-in-law was better than any instructions in gardening books. Successful rose pruning takes observation and practice. Standard roses need to be pruned to a soccer ball size and hybrid teas or bush roses can be cut down to onethird of their growth. Climbing roses shouldn’t be pruned at this time, as they won’t bloom in spring/summer – wait until they finish flushing, then prune dead wood and fertilise with poultry manure, followed by rose food. If training over an arch or pergola, shape and tame once flowering has fi nished.

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

Approach the rose, cut off any dead wood, removing any discoloured growth from fungal disease, then pick a strong bud swell, cutting slightly above the bud on the same angle the bud is shooting. The cut needs to be clean; if jagged, die-back will occur. Bob, my father-in-law, always advocated opening up the centre of the rose. This works for me, but don’t be too heavy handed. In our temperate climate, I suggest leaving at least one-third of strong growth to re-shoot. Most importantly, spray the pruned rose immediately with lime sulphur; it will seal the cuts and prevent diseases such as black spot. Then fertilise with a full, 10-litre bucket of poultry manure. Keep clear from the rose base, but it doesn’t have to be dug in. Then, three weeks later, apply a granulated rose food (not Sudden Impact, which is a slow-release). After the fi rst flush, feed the roses each month with a different medium. For example, if rain has been constant, use dolomite as it sweetens the soil, then next month apply Sudden Impact. Alternate between sulphate of potash, which increases production of flowers, but also improves blooms, and even apply blood and bone as one monthly feed.

THIS WEEK • Start pruning deciduous ornamental shrubs and trees. • Spray all deciduous fruit trees with copper oxychloride. • Once Sasanqua camelllias finish flowering, a trim won’t hurt, and they will love a good dose of cow manure if ground-grown. • If your house is well-heated, remember to spray indoor plants each morning to replace moisture.

PICK OF THE WEEK Jurassic World Friday, GO!, 8.45pm, M (2015) A couple of decades after Jurassic Park burst on to our screens and scared the bejeezus out of audiences both young and old this new instalment, produced by original director Steven Spielberg, takes the tale of over-eager humans at the mercy of prehistoric animals to a whole other level. On the island of Isla Nublar, Jurassic World is a fully functioning dinosaur theme park that attracts thousands of visitors a day. But when a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur experiment creates Indominus Rex, well, things don’t go so well.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Man Of Steel Saturday, NBN, 7pm, M (2013) This re-imagining of the Superman tale, directed by Zack Snyder (Watchmen), produced by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) and starring British hunk Henry Cavill (The Tudors), has blockbuster written all over it, but delivers an unexpectedly grittier tale than its predecessors. Cavill is brooding as the superhero who dons steel (rather than tights), ditching the comical elements of the classic to embody a serious, lonely Clark Kent who, upon discovering his extraterrestrial origins, unloads mass destruction in his fight to save Earth.

Saturday, SBS, 7.30pm, M (2007) A decade after director Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth, the ever-reliable Cate Blanchett (pictured) reigns supreme once again as the majestic monarch in this sequel. This instalment is set against the backdrop of England’s impending invasion by the Spanish Armada, and finds the so-called Virgin Queen longing for love. A yearning for intimacy sees lonely Elizabeth take an interest in William Raleigh (Clive Owen).

INTRODUCING TACO Taco is a Mastiff x who is an absolute joy to be around. She is very sweet and lovable and you will know this from the second you meet her. Taco absolutely loves cuddles and pleasing people. This girl needs a home where she is loved and given the care that she deserves.

NW0276-V15

Taco is one very smart girl! She can sleep both inside and outside but prefers in because she loves being around people. She currently sleeps in my bedroom most nights and she is toilet trained. A place with a secure yard will suit her. Taco loves playing fetch so if you are happy to do the throwing she is happy to do the fetching! Taco has great recall and will come back when called. She is also good on the lead.

Personal relationships may seem unstable in the coming year. Margo will need to be honest with herself and have faith in her own ideals. There will be flashes of inspiration on how to proceed with important decisions and changes. Her female friends and colleagues will be there to guide her in in the right direction with plenty of good advice and wise words. If she needs a shoulder to lean on, she should turn to her trusted female companions and allies.

2 July 1990

ARIES: 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER: 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA: 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN: 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that you must try to cultivate some serenity and rise above any hostility or criticism. A little feigned disinterest on your part may help, especially if partners or certain family members seem determined to find fault with everything you say or do.

The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that issues in your closest relationships are likely and no matter how strongly you feel, you simply can’t let your emotions control your actions. Your heart may be hinting at one alternative, but your head should be listened to.

The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that you’ll need to develop some fancy footwork if you are wanting to avoid disagreements at home. Although it feels like issues are draining your energy, don’t be tempted to take short cuts; they won’t turn out in the long run.

The Full Moon on 28 June could make you feel a little insecure, grouchy and more difficult to approach than usual. The best thing to do is to keep your head down and get on with trivial work rather than anything that is of great importance.

LEO: 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO: 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS: 21 JAN – 19 FEB

The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that a disagreement could become quite intense. Chances are that it has nothing to do with you personally but you could still find yourself on the defensive. Avoid taking sides in any kind of dispute between close friends or loved ones.

The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that the secretive part of your chart is about to activated. This suggests that no matter how hard you try, you simply won’t be able to get your hands on all the facts and figures you need. Be patient to avoid feeling frustrated.

SAGITTARIUS: 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES: 20 FEB – 20 MAR

The Full Moon on the 28th falls in the area of possessions which could become lost, mislaid or even stolen. Be wary then, particularly when in crowds. Lastly, on no account spend in order to impress. You will end up all the poorer and it won’t work anyway.

The Full Moon on the 28th indicates there may be some issues with friends; perhaps one friend is going through a rather difficult time and needs some support whilst another may need to cancel an arrangement with you through no fault of their own. Don’t take this personally.

TAURUS: 21 APR – 21 MAY The Full Moon on the 28th is throwing the emphasis on foreign affairs and travel and indicates that you are about to make a bid for freedom and independence and woe betide anyone who tries to get in your way; they will be trampled underfoot.

GEMINI: 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that there are occasions when you sink your teeth into arguments and refuse to let go. In the long run you must find a better way of approaching certain people. Be subtle, strategic and even devious if absolutely necessary.

The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that there are changes happening in the lives of workmates putting extra pressure on you. The thing to do is to take everything one step at a time. You need to use the day for putting finishing touches to outstanding work.

VIRGO: 24 AUG – 23 SEPT The Full Moon on the 28th indicates that your concentration may not be the greatest so do your best to avoid tedious people and detailed jobs. Travel plans may not run according to schedule either; therefore be prepared for delays.

SLOW FOOD At the heart of the work of slow food is the preservation of biodiversity. Slow food is a global movement made up of local food communities that work to ensure that everyone has access to good, clean and fair food.

WALKING AND MEDITATING I love being outdoors and walking for fitness. I enjoy the sheer pleasure that meditation gives, to stop and feel calm and refreshed.

My favourite things GROWING AND FARMING I have always been growing vegetables and herbs and I continue to have a small backyard garden for use in the our café. On weekends, I grow an annual crop of Turmeric on a small property in Gresford.

Amorelle Dempster FOOD AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST

Amorelle was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and migrated to Australia in 1979. In 2004, she became a founding member of Slow Food Hunter Valley and was named the group’s leader in 2008. Four years later, Amorelle became the Australian councillor on the Slow Food International Board and, in 2017, was re-elected as the regional councillor for Australia and Oceania. Projects initiated under her leadership include Rescue to Dine, where produce rescued from farms are converted into nutritious meals for the community, and the Slow Food Earth Market in Maitland. Last year, Amorelle was part of a series on ABC TV titled Women’s Work and, this year, her role in helping droughtaffected farmers was featured in SBS magazine. She was also named Maitland’s Citizen of the Year for 2017. 66

PEOPLE Working alongside and supporting me is my husband, Andrew, and the fun, hardworking and dedicated Slow Food Hunter Valley members and volunteers.

MAITLAND From my home in South Maitland, all the things I love are accessible by walking – Maitland Park; the Maitland Regional Art Gallery; the Hunter River; my favourite pizza place, Ometto; shopping; and all the pubs and cafés.
