This week... From the editor Some people will tell you they’d rather watch paint dry than sit through a ballet performance; others are mesmerised by the artform. I fall into the latter camp. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I’ve danced throughout most of my teenage years and early adulthood (although I only trialled ballet briefly – I started way too late, as most prodigies hone their skills from a very young age). So, now, I watch ballerinas with a sense of wistfulness. It was no different when I interviewed our cover star, 19-year-old Mia Byrnes, of Nelson Bay. Radiating with beauty, grace, and razor-sharp precision in her technique, Mia takes to the stage like a duck to water. It is truly beautiful to watch. It is this talent and stamina that has earned Mia a place within the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada. She leaves Australia on 18 July with the world at her feet. That story on page 28. Speaking of talent and precision, are there any Disney On Ice fans out there? The magical annual extravaganza was a bit of a tradition during my childhood, so it’s lovely to see the showcase is celebrating 100 years. Fathers can be overlooked when it comes to childbirth preparation. Yet, as the big day approaches, they need to know how to support their partners through what is one of the most physically challenging, and emotionallycharged, events in their lives.

Since 2009, a program called Beer + Bubs has spread nationwide, with dads in all major Australian cities and some regional areas sinking a few beers in the name of fatherhood. Beer + Bubs Newcastle facilitator, Michelle Bohatko, says

the friendly, casual atmosphere of the pub is an ideal venue for childbirth education. “Most men are surprised to learn that childbirth is not a spectator sport and that they can have a profound impact on their partner’s birth experience, helping to make it faster and easier for them,” she says. “Childbirth is unfamiliar territory for most blokes, so it’s more comfortable for them to be in a familiar environment to learn about something so foreign.” The one-night session covers what to say and what not to say during childbirth, as well as tips on how to be an advocate for the birthing mother, practical advice on pain management, and specific recommendations on how to support a woman through each stage of labour and

birth, including a caesarean. Beer + Bubs sessions take place at The Lucky Hotel, Newcastle, on the last Tuesday of each month, with the next event set for 26 June at 7pm. Adam Grossel, who signed up for the session, believes it will be a rewarding experience. “My wife and I are expecting our first child in September,” he says. “We’ve done the standard pregnancy classes, but it’ll be good to hear it from the male perspective. “It should be a relaxed environment with no pressure. “I just think it’s important that men realise there’s a lot we can do to help out [during pregnancy].” To register for a session, visit beerandbubs.com.au or find them on Facebook. - Ben Murphy

news Suicide prevention service launches Steve Schumacher says people often turned a blind eye when a Maitlandbased suicide prevention network first spread its message nine years ago. “We ran an R U OK? Day at Green Hills and, that first year, people would walk up, read what it was about, then turn around and walk away – they didn’t want to know,” he says. “Today, people come up and ask questions.” Mr Schumacher believes the shift in attitude has helped people to seek assistance. Now, an extra service is available in Maitland after Lifeline announced it will offer free, face-to-face counselling every Friday at Rutherford Community Centre. Lifeline received funding from the Primary Health Network (PHN) to provide the service for people who have suicidal thoughts, or have attempted suicide, as part of a broader prevention strategy. While it’s a welcome addition, Mr Schumacher says more needs to be done for those who may not be coping within the community. “The counsellor is already booked out, so that

shows there’s a real need in the area,” he says. “That’s why we’d [eventually] like the service to be five days a week and have a suicide prevention office in Maitland.” Lifeline Hunter Central Coast regional manager, Rob Sams, says the counselling service meets a broader need for people who may not be in crisis, but instead have a personal or relationship issue they are not coping with. He is looking to secure additional funding to broaden the service to more days at Rutherford or other locations in the area. “Our highly-trained counsellors help those in crisis, but also help prevent people from reaching a crisis point,” Mr Sams says. “Many people can’t afford a private psychologist or wait for a public system appointment. “Our counselling fills a muchneeded gap, and it is for everyone.” Suicide is the leading cause of death for all Australians aged between 15 and 44. Eight people die by suicide every day twice the number of those on our roads. Face-to-face counselling is one of the

Green light for new station

Council considers parking options Time restrictions and paid spaces could be introduced in town centres as part of Lake Macquarie council’s new parking strategy. The measures were recommended alongside in-ground parking sensors, price variations in parking, and the construction of shared parking facilities. The strategy, adopted at the council’s meeting last week, aims to improve economic viability, local amenity, access and mobility within town centres; improve walking, cycling and public transport options; and provide choice to consumers. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said it sought to make the best use of the city’s public and private parking spaces, “taking into account considerations such as convenience and accessibility”. “Council is also committed to providing solutions that encourage

active transport around our town centres, as this enhances business activity and improves liveability,” she said. The strategy also stated Transport Management Plans would be prepared for each town centre in the next financial year, which, in order of priority, went from Charlestown to Cardiff, Toronto, Warners Bay, Belmont, Morisset, Swansea, Glendale, and then Mount Hutton. The strategy was placed on public exhibition for seven weeks until December 2017. While several submissions expressed general support, a number of residents also voiced their concern over parking demands at train stations, including Cardiff and Morisset. The council responded that “the consideration of additional commuter parking at train stations will be

undertaken in detail as part of the development of relevant Transport Management Plans”. Earlier this year, Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery urged the state government to address the inadequate parking at, and around, Cardiff station. It followed a crackdown by the council, which issued, and then withdrew, hundreds of fines to commuters who had parked illegally on a grassed area in Mary Street.

Maitland council has approved a development application for a new $3.8 million NSW Ambulance Station at Aberglasslyn Road, Rutherford. The building will feature internal parking for up to seven ambulances, administration and office areas, amenities, logistics and storage areas, an internal wash bay, staff parking, and an education facility and zone management office area. Parliamentary secretary for regional and rural health, Leslie Williams, said it was a significant step in the state government’s election promise to build a new ambulance station in the region. “The purpose-built station has been designed with input from local paramedics and tailored to the needs of the local community,” she said. Construction is scheduled to start later this year.

Program to tackle sexual harassment

The state government has boosted its funding for drought-affected farmers. Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, welcomed an announcement this week, which will take the government’s total relief package past half a billion dollars. The latest drought-relief package includes an additional $250 million in the Farm Innovation Fund, providing farmers with low-interest loans of up to $250,000 to improve farm infrastructure and help farmers prepare for, and deal with, drought. It also features a new management plan to reduce kangaroo numbers in drought-hit areas; more than $4 million in mental health support specifically targeting affected communities; and one-off loans of $50,000 as part of the Farm Innovation Fund that will be interest-free for seven years. “It is important farmers don’t self-assess their eligibility,” Mr MacDonald said. The Pasterfield Community Centre, part of a $15 million project by Lake Macquarie council, has been described as a “significant asset” amid calls for interest in the new space. Not-for-profit organisation The Canopy, which provides multiple services for families, children and the community, will manage the site on behalf of Lake Macquarie council. “Pasterfield Community Centre will provide additional community space where residents can meet for social events, access programs and services, and act as an information and referral hub for local residents,” The Canopy’s community innovation manager, Anna Dowley says. Teenagers across the Hunter will soon have a better understanding of online sexual harassment after the state government provided an $8,000 grant for an education program run by Victims of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL). Attorney General, Mark Speakman, said VOCAL’s program would help address the 9.8% increase in reported indecent assault and other sexual offences in the Newcastle Police District over the past two years. “Most young people don’t understand how serious the possession or publication of child pornography is, with each offence carrying a maximum five years imprisonment and 10 years imprisonment respectively,” Mr Speakman said. The Sexting and Sexual Harassment Intervention (SASHI) program will assist secondary school students across the Hunter and will be rolled out to small class groups on a rotational basis. The 50-minute interactive presentation has been developed to ignite discussion around what constitutes sexual harassment and sexting.

Ms Consoli said the positions would be a wonderful addition to the region’s existing cancer services. “We will be providing supportive care and coordination of care to prostate cancer patients and their families, together with raising community awareness and carrying out research,” she said. The PCFA’s Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing Service was launched in 2012. There are now 45 specialist nurses across major metropolitan and regional hospitals in Australia.

How do you communicate your love? Q Sometimes I feel my partner and I don’t really understand each other. Although we do talk about our feelings and we have shared goals, I feel he doesn’t show me love the way I want him to. I think I am more romantic about expressing my love for him but he tells me he shows me he loves me by doing things for me – such as cooking and doing a lot around the house. I really appreciate these things about him but I don’t associate those actions with romance. To me, they are just a normal part of a relationship. I’m worried that we just don’t see love or romance the same way and I’m not sure how to make him understand me more. What can I do? Q You and your partner do seem to be on the same page about many things in life – like you said, you are open with how you both feel and you have shared goals for the future. But not all couples are on the same page about how to express love for each other. This is not due to lack of love or care though. Often, the way we show love to our partner is the way we want to receive love from our partner. However, this does not mean that our partner likes to receive love in the same way we do. This is something that we don’t often talk about in relationships and now is a good time for you and your partner to explore this together. The conversation doesn’t have to be about what is missing. The conversation is an opportunity to learn more about each other and how to better meet each other’s needs. The way we prefer to receive love is what we might call our love language. I’d like to introduce you to the Five Love Languages, developed by Dr Gary Chapman. According to Dr Chapman, learning to express love in your partner’s language can transform your relationship. You and your partner do not have to have the same love language. What is important is that you figure out what your own love language preferences are, share this knowledge with each other and find ways to meet the needs of your partner, based on their main love language/s. According to Dr Chapman, the five languages of love are:

1. Words of affirmation: This language uses words to affirm other people. This may be verbal reminders of your love for each other, sweet text messages, love letters, praise and encouragement for each other.

2. ‘Acts of service: For these people, actions speak louder than words. Clearly, for your partner, he likes to show you he loves you by doing things for you. It can be small or big gestures that demonstrate this.

3. Receiving gifts: For some people, what makes them feel most loved is to receive a gift. It doesn’t mean the gift is an expensive one; it could just be a small token as a symbol of love to show that someone is thinking of you.

4. Quality time: This language is all about giving the other person your undivided attention.

5. Physical touch: To this person, nothing speaks more deeply than appropriate touch. Knowing and talking about your love language is only the first step. It is also then important to discuss what that physically looks like for you. For example, if your preferred love language is quality time, what does that mean? Sitting together on the lounge watching TV together? Going for walks together or going on holidays? Be really specific about how you would feel loved. news Stars of Newcastle breaks record Departing regional manager Shayne Connell has hailed the community’s “overwhelming” support after Cancer Council NSW’s Stars of Newcastle set a new fundraising record. The annual dance event saw local celebrities shimmy and shuffle their way to stardom at NEX Wests City on Saturday night. Mr Connell said the 2018 Stars of Newcastle was the biggest in the state over the past decade, with about $288,000 raised in total. “We are thrilled with the support of the stars and dancers, but we also had more fundraisers and events than we’ve ever had before [in the lead-up],” he said. “I’ve got to give a special mention to [contestant] Brad Garrard – $71,000 makes him the highest-ever individual fundraiser for the Stars of Newcastle and the second highest-ever in NSW.” Mr Connell, the face of the Hunter Central Coast Cancer Council for the past 12 years, added it was the perfect way to bid farewell. He will leave his post this week as part of a restructure due to a drastic dip in fundraising income throughout the state. “I’m leaving on Friday and I really feel like I am going out with a bang,” he said.

news Push to reuse glass Lake Macquarie council is spearheading a push to substitute sand with recycled crushed glass in civil works projects in a bid to find a solution to a growing national waste problem. The Hunter-first project aims to reuse thousands of tonnes of glass each year, with the potential to reuse all 12,000 tonnes collected across the region if other councils jump on board. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said glass bottles, jars and other items found in household recycling bins would be sorted and processed as usual at a materials recovery facility at Gateshead. However, rather than looking for glass-recycling solutions interstate, the council is trialling the reuse of glass sand manufactured at a custom-built plant on the Central Coast. The glass sand has similar applications to normal sand and can be used as bedding material in drainage projects and other civil works in public and private development. “There is a growing need across Australia to find an end use for recycled glass,” Cr Fraser said. “With companies finding it cheaper to import new glass than buy recycled, we need to start coming up with innovative, costeffective alternatives. “This collaborative project could help solve a national crisis in our own backyard.” Other Hunter-based councils have already expressed interest in the initiative, along with major local organisations.

Pressure over road projects

University eyes further expansion

Labor has pressured the state government to prioritise two major road projects to improve Maitland motorists’ access to the Hunter Expressway. Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will soon start investigation work on the Testers Hollow upgrade, with planning expected to be completed by mid-2019. The state government has allocated $2 million to the project, while the federal government contributed $15 million. However, Labor demanded the RMS release its plans for Maitland’s railway roundabout, claiming traffic lights and a widening of lanes at Church Street are urgently needed to reduce congestion. “Labor understands that the Testers Hollow upgrade and the Maitland railway roundabout upgrade are vital pieces of community infrastructure that would be of great benefit for drivers on a daily basis,” shadow minister for roads, maritime and freight, Jodi McKay, said.

The University of Newcastle has lodged a development application for a Honeysuckle city campus. Chief operating officer, Nat McGregor, says the university wants to grow, develop knowledge, and drive an innovative economy. “The Honeysuckle city campus development is an integral part of the university’s NeW Futures Strategic Plan 2016-2025,” he says. “It provides the university with a great opportunity to extend on the success of the NeW Space campus, which is a powerful indication of what can happen when a collective ambition exists to revitalise the city.” Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes says the council has long supported the expansion into the city centre, which is made possible through an agreement between the Hunter Development Corporation and the university.

Nabbout praises Socceroos’ effort Former Newcastle star Andrew Nabbout labelled the Socceroos performance against France on Saturday as “bittersweet”. The striker made his FIFA World Cup debut in Australia’s 2-1 defeat, playing 64 minutes before being substituted for Tomi Juric. It took a controversial goal in the 58th minute to break the deadlock between the Group C rivals. Australian defender Josh Risdon conceded a penalty after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) determined he made contact with Antoine Griezmann. Despite the tough loss, Nabbout said the Socceroos had stuck to coach Bert van Marwijk’s tactics well. “We went out there with a game plan and I thought we executed it perfectly until, unfortunately, we conceded the way that we did,” he told The World Game. “It’s bittersweet because, like I said, we did exactly what the coach wanted us to do for pretty much the whole game. “Unfortunately, football doesn’t always fall your way.” Nabbout said he was pleased

with his overall performance against the star-studded French. “I knew I had to run as hard as I could to put them under pressure and try and force some errors, and I did force some errors, which is a positive for me,” he said. Nabbout’s stunning 2017/18 A-League campaign ended prematurely when he transferred to Japanese powerhouse Urawa Red Diamonds in March. Meet The Kent Hotel’s head chef: Kim Tiernan

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself. A: Hi, my name is Kim Tiernan. I’m the head chef at The Kent Hotel, Hamilton. I have had the privilege of working here for five years – the last two as the head chef. I started out as a cook and worked my way up to the top job. I have been a chef for 18 years in total. Q: What do you like to cook at home? A: I love the flavours of onion, garlic, basil and chilli, so, at home, I like to cook pastas and stir fries. They are quick and tasty as I don’t really cook much on work nights. Usually on days off I cook meals for a couple of days.

Q: Describe your most memorable moment as a chef. A: The most memorable moment as a chef… that’s a big one. There have been a few. I think the kitchen crews I have worked with. I have made lifetime friends over the years, as we tend to spend more time at work than at home, so some of your workmates become another branch of your family. But the one that stands out the most, as it taught me a very good lesson, was a trade skills competition I entered as a third-year apprentice. I was prepared, my dishes were presented on time for judgement, and I came second, but my nerves and the stress of perfection was my undoing. It was a great learning curve as I am a strong person and love a challenge. Q: If you could host anyone at a dinner party, who would it be~ and why? A: My first reaction was Corey Taylor from Slipknot/Stone Sour. I love how his mind works, but honestly, family and friends. We get so busy with work and kids, especially in the hospitality industry when you are working

most weekends. So, to host a dinner party where I could catch up with what everyone is doing in their lives, would feel like being connected again. Q: What inspired you to become a chef? A: Growing up, my dream job was working on a cattle station, but as I got older, I didn’t follow in this direction. I worked with horses in various disciplines while trying to discover that “job” that would interest me and pay the bills. I grew up in the Hunter Valley, so the restaurants and wineries have always held a sort of mystic other-life to me, so when a position for a cook was advertised at my local hotel, I applied and was successful. I loved the work. I loved the challenge. I then took a job at a club and was given the opportunity to do my apprenticeship as a mature-aged student. I jumped on it, and, the rest, as they say, is history.

Disney tales brought to life Frozen’s Elsa is a strong, determined woman, and who better to portray her in Disney On Ice than star skater Olivia Oltmanns. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Oltmanns knows a thing or two about strength in the face of adversity. Two years ago, she fractured her back. Doctors told Oltmanns that if she continued to skate, she would likely be in extreme pain. Despite this, she went on to skate a full and

successful season. “Every day was a struggle, but looking back now, I don’t regret any of it,” she says. “It made me a hundred times tougher.” Oltmanns has been skating since she was two years old, under the guidance of her mother and coach, Trudy Oltmanns, and Dalilah Sappenfield. She competed for the USA in pairs, both nationally and internationally, before joining Feld Entertainment in 2015.

She’s currently touring the country in Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic, and has a lot to say about her character. “I feel like my personality aligns with who [Elsa] is,” Oltmanns tells Newcastle Weekly. “She’s trying to teach girls they can be anything and do anything they want, and there’s a really special message in that – one that I feel grateful to relay.” Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic is showing at Newcastle Entertainment Centre from 13 to 15 July. One step closer, tiny dancer Nelson Bay ballerina Mia Byrnes has worked hard for this moment. Behind all the glitzy tutus, the glamorous stage makeup and the prestigious awards, are countless hours of practice, early rises, bruised feet, and a steely resolve. And now, it’s her time to shine. Mia has been signed to the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada. She leaves Australia on 18 July, with 10 months of touring and performing around Canada, France and Belgium at her feet. “I sent [my audition tape] to every ballet company I could fi nd,” Mia told Newcastle Weekly. “I didn’t care where I went; I just wanted to dance.” Mia’s passion for dance

blossomed from a very young age. Now 19, she started dancing when she was just three years old, following in the footsteps of her older sister, Georgia. Mia started her training at Robyn Yvette Dance Centre, and tried just about every style of dance there was, from jazz to tap to contemporary. She notched up an impressive 15 years there, before studying with the National College of Dance in Lambton. Mia left school at the start of Year 11 to pursue a Certificate IV in Dance, and her dream to become a full-time dancer. In 2016, she headed for the Gold Coast, where she spent 18 months honing her classical ballet skills at Atelier Australia under the watchful eye of teacher Heidi Landford.

Some of her most recent accolades include being a reserve fi nalist for the 2017 Sydney Eisteddfod Ballet Scholarship, and receiving 98% in her last RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) ballet exam. Mia now boasts a Diploma of Dance – the equivalent to graduating Year 12 – and the talent and confidence to tackle anything life throws at her. “I’m a little bit nervous about the workload [of a professional ballet company]; it could be quite intense, but I’m ready,” Mia said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to work with and be inspired by different people. “But most of all, I just want to get on stage and start performing.” - Georgia Osland

My favourite things OZHARVEST This is a fabulous organisation that works on a simple premise – collect good food that was going to waste and give it to people who need it! In Newcastle, we collect an average of 7,000kg every week and deliver it to over 100 charitable organisations.

FAMILY & FRIENDS With only our immediate family and rescue puppy here in Australia, we’re lucky enough to have made some great friends. We love spending time and sharing adventures with them – you know who you are!

RUNNING I run to maintain my physical and mental health. I’ve just registered to do City2Surf for the first time and my wife has introduced me to the joys of trail running.

Originally from the UK, Chris and his family came to Australia on a work exchange to the RAAF at Williamtown. They loved it so much they decided to stay and, 15 years later, they haven’t moved! Chris has always enjoyed helping people and he’s been lucky enough to train people for a new role, provide professional and personal development, and deal with compassionate cases. Since leaving the Air Force, he’s qualified as a coach and is studying to be a counsellor. Chris has been with OzHarvest for 18 months and is continually amazed by the generosity of the staff, volunteers, sponsors and donors. Chris says being able to help some of the most vulnerable people in our community is very satisfying. 58

A couple of close friends introduced me to the pleasure of brewing your own beer. I’m still a bit of a novice but it’s a great feeling when your mates enjoy beer you’ve made.

NEWCASTLE I’m from Newcastle-upon-Tyne so that qualifies me as a local, right? Both Newcastles are great and similar in many ways, thankfully not in the weather department!
